Ace: On board the 85m Lürssen superyacht for sale

A bold owner defied convention to create Ace , an 85-metre Lürssen that tailors onboard experience to family life – with no compromises. With her interiors revealed for the first time, Caroline White steps on board this superyacht to discover just how daring the gamble was...

Ace  seems an apt name for a yacht that shuffles her decks with charismatic success. This 85-metre Lürssen, delivered in 2012, is instantly recognisable, from the sweeping arches that her designer Andrew Winch likens to the “fantastic power of a wave”, to what everyone refers to as her “eyes”: two neat oval balconies emblazoned with the yacht’s name in stainless steel. You know just by looking at her that she’s something different. But since she’s always been a private yacht, with her interiors off limits to the media, few have seen just  how  different... until now.

“ Ace  reflects her passionate and enthusiastic owner,” says Robert Moran, president of Moran Yacht & Ship, and it’s certainly clear that such a boat could only come about with a strong character to shape her. Moran’s team guided the project from inception to completion; from the macro, such as bringing the owner to the yard and negotiating (hard) on the contract, to the micro, such as writing the specs and working out the audiovisual and IT systems. “The owner was interested in a fully custom yacht with a classical interior, so we recommended Andrew Winch and his design team.”

Winch was summoned to The Ritz London and over six months he and the owner sketched out an unconventional vision. “He had chartered yachts and he really felt that they were all wrong. He’d worked out what he wanted, how he lived. He wanted to get it right first time,” says the designer. That meant a layout that was “really, really different”.

Winch sums up the approach as “thought-inducing, ultra-creative and confident of itself”. But he admits that, “as a designer, one of the biggest challenges was explaining the philosophy to the build team. It’s very, very good, engineering-wise. But it caused quite a lot of headaches because it wasn’t a standard construction.”

Whereas on many yachts of this size you might lose family members in the warren of rooms, here you have just one deck for most social spaces – the upper deck. There’s an owner’s deck above, but it’s not vast – and why would you sit up here when your family and friends are having fun one deck below? Social guest areas (cinema, gym, guest cabins, etc) and crew spaces are on the main deck.

Lürssen project manager Dietrich Kirchner gives a taste of the reimagining that had to be done. “We have a cinema and a gym on the main deck, where normally there is a saloon; you have a huge spa on the lower deck amidships, where you would normally expect to have the technical areas; and you have forward dining on the upper deck, where we would normally have the owner’s [suite] or VIP cabins,” he says.

It’s important to understand that while all this is unusual, it is not capricious – its primary aim is to make life on board work better. As Winch puts it, “he thinks through functions for efficiency and pleasure”. For example, the owner wanted to talk about crew spaces before discussing his own quarters. Rather than being tucked away on the lower decks, the crew mess is on the main deck, with sliding doors to a side deck so that they can get some air. Winch recalls: “He said when they come up off the dock, the crew mess is the first [area] they go to. So why make them go down into the belly of the boat? I want them to want to be on the boat.” It’s a sensible approach for attracting the best crew and enabling smooth service. (Also helpful are the vast galley and intelligent circulation throughout).

But the planning did get to the owner’s quarters eventually: “He wanted a master [suite] facing aft so that when he woke up, he would have panoramic views of the ocean all around him,” says Moran. “This was accomplished by adding bulwarks on the aft deck that drop down to create an unobstructed view of the surroundings.”

The suite itself has “a pared-back design scheme in soft champagnes and whites to showcase the client’s art collection,” says Selina McCabe, partner at Winch Design. But it’s certainly not plain – there’s a hand-carved headboard in a contemporary ribbon design and floral marquetry above the bookshelves. The bathroom floor is inlaid with a graphic pattern using semi-precious stones and marbles, and the wardrobe – while it has a simple exterior – opens to reveal a bold lining in a marquetry stripe inspired by Savile Row suits.

McCabe points out that positioning the owner’s suite here also protects its petite aft terrace when the boat is under way (as opposed to the more traditional owner-up-front arrangement, where a forward terrace can be pretty breezy).

It benefits routing too. From here, the owner can stroll down what Winch likens to Rome’s Spanish Steps (for their drama rather than their design): port and starboard staircases flow from the owner’s deck all the way down to the swim platform and – crucially – they are built into those wave-like haunches of superstructure, so they’re partially sequestered from the decks they run past. That means the owner can go directly and discreetly from his suite for a swim in the sea without having to stop and speak to anyone unless he wants to.

Building those arcs, Kirchner says, had the Lürssen team “scratching our heads”. They had to be strong enough to function as structural staircases, but flexible enough to deal with movement when waves place stresses on different parts of the boat. “You either make them very rigid in order to take all the load or you detach them from being taken with the bending moment of the hull,” says Kirchner. In the end they chose the latter and built them in a similar way to fashion plates – but they are still incorporated into the superstructure, which involved plenty of complex calculations.

Another dramatic intersection of exterior design and lifestyle can be found within those “eyes”. They sit either side of the owner’s deck sitting room and study, creating sheltered, balcony-like spaces out of the side decks.

Inside, Winch describes the style as “contemporary grand hotel”, capturing the feeling of glamorous escape that you get in Le Bristol Paris, or the Hôtel Hermitage Monte-Carlo. But that does not equal a composite replica. “I would say the brief was classical contemporary,” says McCabe. “So it has an architectural envelope inspired by classical interiors, but it’s been reimagined with contemporary finishes, materials and proportions.”

In particular, she says, that meant keeping spaces “light, fresh and bright” except in a small selection of spaces – such as the owner’s study – where a deliberately moody, atmospheric “jewellery box” feel has been created.

Entering the upper deck from the vast aft deck, the light classical theme pervades subtly via cream panelling and walnut flooring, inset with Rosa Aurora Light marble in a geometric pattern. First stop is a reception space and a bar topped with pearlescent shell (sourced as a by-product) and backed with recesses that display glinting bottles as if they were works of art.

Further in, the upper saloon features sink-in custom sofas and ivory silk chaises longues designed by Winch and a treasure trove of pattern and precious materials: a gold Grecian motif is picked out in the silky carpet and echoed in mother-of-pearl door inlays, while leaf-like patterns in silver leaf adorn the fabric wall panels.

But the decoration moves up a gear in the main lobby just forward of here, where an ornate silver staircase curls up through three decks. Silver for gold is a clever substitution to lighten classical decor, but the creation was “quite challenging for logistics,” says Kirchner, “because this was one of the last elements to get into the boat.” While the free-standing spiral appears to be one piece, it had to be pre-fabricated in bits. McCabe notes that “the pieces were so large, they needed to build the biggest vats in the world to plate the silver”. After that, they had to put it together in situ like a giant and frighteningly expensive jigsaw puzzle.

Forward of here, things get even less conventional. Where you might expect to find an owner’s suite lies a formal dining saloon. Here, cream columns and panelling are enriched with blood-red glass lamps by Porta Romana and in coral patterns on the chairs and Holland & Sherry curtains. There’s silver here too, glinting from the sideboards and highlighting the overhead panelling. The standout piece in this space is the intricate marquetry panel designed by McCabe. Built by a Parisian artisan, it depicts an ace playing card in fluid, organic lines and was inspired by a Hermès scarf that is framed on the opposite wall.

Forward of the dining saloon lies a sitting room-cum- library. This more relaxed saloon features a fireplace, piano and games table, while splashes of blue in the neutral scheme – custom colourways for the Holland & Sherry cushions, luminous azure in oil paintings and glass sculptures designed by Winch and made by a Czech studio – are part of a running ocean theme.

McCabe points out “Matissesque underwater forms” in wall paintings and coverings. All this complements the lightness of the room, thanks to 180-degree windows on to the foredeck and pool. You can imagine entire days here, sunbathing and swimming, coming in for fresh juice and a game; evening cocktails out on deck, the sound of the piano drifting from inside. And because of this space’s position, life here can be lived in privacy, even if moored (stern-to) in port.

It’s worth noting that the deck spaces throughout the boat have been decorated with an interior mindset, to enhance the seamless inside/outside transition that the architecture creates. Take the upper aft deck dining table, decorated with marquetry and inlaid with coins from the yacht’s voyages; or the outdoor cushions: “We did about three different (interchangeable) designs for the exterior upholstery and cushions,” says McCabe. “There’s a Riviera collection, Monaco and Rio de Janeiro. [The owner] wanted a carnival of colour so there’s a real explosion of patterns and materials, lots of Missoni prints, geometric shapes and bold pops of colour.” And they made sure the fabrics were not of the scratchy, hard all-weather variety, but soft and luxurious, “encouraging people to want to be outside, relaxing”.

There are also a couple of very special social spaces cocooned within the boat. One is a (relatively) petite space on the upper deck. “The brief included a Russian tearoom and nightclub,” recalls Moran. “The designers were able to cleverly combine these two vastly different concepts into an amazing area on her top deck.” It’s decorated with Macassar ebony panelling, embossed leather by a Parisian studio, a custom-designed quartet of mirrors, plus cashmere throws with marine designs in pops of coral and mandarin. It feels intimate and fun at the same time.

The other space is the lower deck spa, which Moran describes as “one of the most beautiful and functional spas I’ve ever seen”. It was inspired by Roman villas and comprises a hammam, sauna, spa pool, icy plunge pool and a lounge adjacent to a huge fold-down sea terrace. There are Romanesque pietra dura (mosaics using semi-precious stones), Byzantine-style mosaic floors, columns and hand-painted trompe l’oeil lemon groves.

There’s a lot of stone here and on  Ace  generally: and all of it had to be perfect. For example, says McCabe, “the main white stone throughout the upper deck is Rosa Aurora, with this accent of blue sodalite. We specifically hand-selected each slab so that it would be the purest blue, rather than having any grey or striations through it.”

Given that this no-compromise “best of the best” attitude runs all the way through the boat – from the fundamentals of the general arrangement to the finest of finishes – it is little wonder that she’s a modern icon. More surprising is that, shepherded by the Moran team, the yacht was delivered on budget and three months early. It even sounds like it might have been fun. “He’s a great guy and we really enjoyed working with him to see his vision become reality,” says Moran of the owner.  Ace  is perhaps the most lavish example of nominative determinism afloat.

A California philanthropist allegedly threatened to kill a dock worker during a heated argument from his multimillion-dollar yacht, before dropping his pants and making several threatening gestures to the employee.

Ajay Thakore, a local entrepreneur in the San Diego area, attempted to dock his Lamborghini yacht at the private Marriot Marquis Marina to pick up one of his employees but was stopped by worker Joseph Holt on Sunday.

“I told him respectfully that he couldn’t be there, and I honestly was hoping to have a conversation with him about his cool boat,” Holt told CBS8. “But yeah, it completely went the other way.”

Thakore, who goes by his social media name, Ace Rogers, was riding on his rare $4.5 million Tecnomar for Lamborghini 63 yacht at the time of the daytime dispute.

Marina worker Joseph Holt flips the bird to yacht owner Ajay Thakore on March 10, 2024 in San Diego.

Holt claimed Thakore became hostile as soon as he was told off.

“It escalated immediately. It was 0 to 100 immediately,” the 21-year-old worker added.

Thakore, the CEO of medical advertising firm Doctor Multimedia, allegedly began to threaten Holt’s life as the luxury speedboat drove away from the docks.

“I will kill you, you know I will kill you, I will kill,” Thakore repeatedly yells, according to the video posted to YouTube.

Besides threatening to take Holt’s life, Thakore claimed to have the power to get the dock worker fired, ripping on the type of job he had.

“I’m a minimum wage worker, he was commenting on that, on my status just because of my job,” Holt said. “He was saying I’m nobody, I’m nothing, I work a silly job.”

Thakore allegedly threatened to kill the 21-year-old dock hand after the two got into a heated argument at the private dock.

“He said that he knows people, he has connections, he can change my life and ruin it,” he added.

During the heated discussion, Thakore allegedly pulled out his wallet and began throwing $100 bills at Holt and into the water, according to the outlet.

Holt said he tried to control himself during the incident and only gave Thakore the middle finger.

“I really didn’t know how to process it. I really was trying to restrain myself from getting fired from my job or stepping out of line. The only thing I did was give him the bird,” he said.

Holt said he tried his best to control himself during the incident and only gave Thakore the middle finger.

The dock hand blasted Thakore for his actions, especially in a public setting where he stripped nude and showed himself off.

“He had dropped his pants and started to make gestures to everybody watching and me. You can’t act that way in public. It’s just not OK. Especially threatening my life, at the very least. There were women and children there. That’s the most important part,” Holt said.

Thakore claims his outburst started because of a misunderstanding and was sorry for the people who saw it.

“The interaction that occurred yesterday was regrettable. What started as a minor misunderstanding escalated into an argument, and I apologize for my actions and to those who witnessed the unfortunate exchange,” Thakore’s public relations team said in a statement, obtained by KFMB.

Port of San Diego Harbor Police were called to the Seaforth Boat rental dock for “a possible intoxicated vessel operator” but arrived at the marina 10 minutes after Thakore and his boat had left.

As the boat drove off, Thakore allegedly dropped his pants to the floor and showed himself off.

The employee who attempted to board the extravagant boat defended his boss’s actions, saying Holt was hostile toward Thakore, and the businessman was only defending his team.

“As I went to kindly step onto the Yacht, I was impeded by two members that work for Seaforth Boat Rental,” Thakore’s employee Jason said on a post to the CEO’s Instagram account.

Jason said he was told to “stand back” the first time he went to step on the boat, and claimed he was forearmed during his second attempt to board the yacht.

“They physically got in my way, the situation became fairly tense, there was a lot of screaming back and forth, extremely confrontational, I didn’t fully understand protocol, as I was going to step onto the boat.”

“As all of this happened, my boss flipped and he’s very protective of me, his fiancée, of his employees.” Jason added. “It was a confusing situation that became very tense and very confrontational.”

Thakore claims his outburst started because of a misunderstanding and he was only defending his own employee.

Thakore captioned the post saying “there are two sides to every story and it’s easy to paint a picture with edited video clips from cell phones.”

“My employee Jason was being restricted, restrained, and threatened while trying to board my yacht. As a leader, I defend my own fiercely with everything I have, and I will never apologize for that,” the caption read.

The Successors of St. Stephen of Perm

In memory of three holy hierarchs of perm.

Maria Marchenko

The Holy Hierarchs Gerasim, Pitirim and Jonah of Perm

Here I am, O Lord, send me. Here I am, O God, in good time. And I shall glorify Thy Name, Here I am, O Lord, here I am.

Though the rays of Christ’s light did struggle through into the depths of the pagan forest, there were still many villages that, as before, had not yet heard the Gospel. Now, after the death of St. Stephen whom they hated, the pagan priests who were scattered across the Urals and had seemingly lost ground, hoped to get even with the newly-established Church of Perm. Among their plans were to bring their former flock back to the old beliefs, destroy the altars erected by St. Stephen, and resume their economic exploitation of the peace-loving Zyryans [“Zyryane”: the old-fashioned Russian name for the Komi—the people of what is now the Komi Autonomous Republic, belonging to the Finno-Ugric family.—Trans.]. Most of the shaman priests came from the Vogul people [“Voguly”: the obsolete name of the Mansi—the indigenous people living mainly in the Ob River basin in Western Siberia and related to the Finno-Ugric family; now most of them live in the Khanty-Mansi autonomous area within Russia’s Tyumen region.—Trans.] who converted to Orthodoxy very reluctantly.

The new diocese’s link to the Moscow Metropolis seemed (and was in many respects) nominal and illusory; in the late fourteenth century it was still extremely far from there to the Grand Prince (and the Metropolitan) of Moscow. The defenselessness of local clerics in the face of a hostile and often aggressive population frightened the newly-arrived priests and jeopardized the clergy who were Zyryan converts. Moreover, the new diocese needed not just priests but missionaries who were ready to put their lives at risk in open conflicts with the rebellious Ostyaks (the Khanty and the Mansi). It needed monks who were not bound to their families and children. This caused a shortage of clergy.

Another threat came from local government officials ( zemsky dyaks ) who as secular masters were gradually taking over the authority of bishops who governed the huge territory. This territory fell under the patronage of the Grand Prince of Moscow primarily under the auspices of the religious solidarity of Moscow and the newly-converted people of Perm, but the laws of the development of Muscovy demanded rendering to Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and sometimes these demands took cruel and even bloodthirsty forms.

The Archbishopric of Novgorod was indignant with Moscow, believing that the self-seeking Muscovites had lawlessly appropriated the territories that had belonged to the See of Novgorod from time immemorial 1 . Thus, some dishonest Church figures from among the ambitious lobbyists for Novgorod imperialism were ready to help the pagans who resisted the Muscovite expansion.

Thus St. Stephen’s work was threatened with serious danger. However, leaving the people of Perm physically, the holy hierarch had promised to remain with the Zyryans spiritually after his repose, provided they remain faithful Orthodoxy and keep their love for it. That is why after his repose, missionary work in his diocese was continued by three worthy successors: Sts. Gerasim, Pitirim and Jonah.

But Isaac, St. Stephen’s immediate successor in the diocese of Ust-Vym 2 , spent most his archpastoral ministry in Moscow, because being close to senior representatives of the Church hierarchy was his top priority as a hierarch. It is unknown whether his intercessions with the Metropolitan for the newly-converted Zyryans were successful; but what is known is that the name of Isaac was all but forgotten in the annals of Perm history, and his memory was almost erased and replaced by his immediate successors’ missionary exploits; because they preferred to share in the sorrows and joys of their flock in situ rather than send them exhortations from faraway Moscow.

St. Gerasim, the betrayed and murdered bishop

Hieromartyr Gerasim

St. Gerasim’s self-sacrificing missionary endeavors, along with his consistent and energetic policy in the administrative sphere not only set the region’s development on the most progressive path but also provoked the envy of the less talented or charismatic functionaries of the state machine. The latter, wishing to get even with St. Gerasim who, in their view, exceeded his authority, decided to make use of the Vogul people’s deadly hatred for him. Officially, the local government officials who acted in collusion were right—St. Gerasim organized “groundwork at the bishop’s residence for the construction of a church” and entered into “conflict with the prince’s administration over disputed land ownership.” 5 In all probability, the bishop wanted to expand his estate (the bishop’s settlement [ vladychny gorodok .—Auth.] on the territory of which a bishop was equal to a feudal lord) without the secular authorities’ permission and get a part of the population involved in the work (compulsory but made to appear voluntary) on renovating a dilapidated church in Ust-Vym.

What made St. Gerasim firmly demand obedience to himself of the Prince of Moscow’s subjects in matters that were subject to Church jurisdiction? The fact is that the holy bishop presumed “in all fairness” Moscow government officials’ progress, along with cultural development and improvement in living conditions of inhabitants of humble Zyryan villages were the direct and immediate result of the success of Orthodox mission; and, therefore, there was nothing more important both for Moscow functionaries and local pastors than expanding the territory around the bishop’s residence and repairing the crumbling church.

But St. Gerasim’s opponents thought otherwise. Through slander they made a member of his household, a baptized Vogul, begin to hate him, and persuaded the man to murder the bishop for patriotic reasons, standing up for his people whom St. Gerasim supposedly persecuted. The most cynical thing about this treacherous murder was that it was committed by someone whom the saint had once taken into his home for care and for spiritual guidance. According to St. Gerasim’s plan, this Vogul would have eventually become a pastor and a missionary among his fellow-tribesmen.

On that fateful day, during a prayer service, the madman waited until St. German turned his back, grabbed his omophorion and strangled him with it. This is how the Vychegda-Vym Chronicle, written by the clergy of the Ust-Vym Monastery of the Archangel Michael in the late sixteenth century, recounts his tragic murder: “Bishop Gerasim of Perm has been murdered several stadia [an ancient measure of length, about 185 meters.—Trans.] from the bishop’s settlement, in the place called Mys 6 .”

St. Pitirim the Martyr

Chudov Monastery was known as the royal monastery, and its abbot would become a close advisor to the Grand Prince of Moscow. As abbot of Chudov Monastery St. Pitirim may have baptized the future Grand Prince Ivan III of Russia (1462—1505) in infancy, and after the news of the martyrdom of St. Gerasim of Ust-Vym had reached Moscow, the Metropolitan chose him as candidate, not without the influence of, or rather, on the initiative of the Grand Prince. St. Pitirim must have been shocked by St. Gerasim’s martyrdom; there was invisible warfare on the metropolia’s eastern frontiers, and representatives of the senior Moscow clergy were becoming its victims. By that time the fratricidal war between Princes Vasily II the Blind and appanage Prince Dmitry Shemyaka was already raging in Rus’. Its battlefront was precisely in Perm, and the bishopric couldn’t avoid “hostilities”. The future holy hierarch willy-nilly had to engage in bigtime politics. Well aware of this, he consciously and readily took the bishop’s duties on himself with humility and made his way to St. Gerasim’s bereaved flock.

St. Stephen, Bishop of Great Perm

In those first months, scrupulous analytical work to determine the strategy for future missionary work was carried out in the bishop’s office, St. Pitirim’s desk was covered with maps that he and his companions had drawn and marked. Long-time residents of the bishop’s quarters from among the clergy who had concelebrated with St. Gerasim reported to St. Pitirim what, when and how the people of Perm had been evangelized, in which districts of the region the inhabitants were the least enlightened by the missions of Sts. Stephen, Gerasim and their disciples, and where the pagan high priests whom St. Gerasim exposed had fled. It was finally decided to start a missionary campaign in the area of the Vashka basin, settled by the Udoren people. It was there, in the area called Udora, that the bastion of paganism (contemporary to St. Pitirim) was concentrated; it was there that the spiritual leaders of idol-worship and their followers had settled after being banished by St. Stephen several decades before.

By his personal example St. Pitirim instructed his priests how to find words that would reach the hearts of ordinary people. Those were the words of consolation and support, words that really staggered a populace who lived by the laws of vendetta and in the wildest pagan ways: “And he baptized and converted many, since those people were ignorant and notorious for their cruel customs; the blessed man enlightened and taught them in faith with great humility.” According to the Vychegda-Vym Chronicle, the success of the mission was full and unconditional: “Bishop Pitirim converted the Udoren people at the Vashka River to the holy faith, gave them abbots and priests, and erected holy churches there.”

Wandering across his diocese’s outlying districts, the holy bishop didn’t forget the people of Perm who made up the heart of his flock. St. Pitirim would often give targeted support to residents of Zyryan settlements, generously distribute alms from his private sources, and, most importantly, intercede with the Grand Prince to reduce the amount of tribute the people of Perm were obliged to pay.

Over his tenure the holy bishop visited Moscow several times to take part in the events that would be epoch-making for his contemporaries. The first of them was associated with the Synod of the Russian Bishop’s anathema of Prince Dmitry Shemyaka, who had blinded Grand Prince Vasily II of Moscow (1425–1462) in order to seize power and remove his most dangerous and legitimate rival from the political scene. It is remarkable with what unanimity Church figures (monks, like St. Gregory of Pelshem, as well as bishops) took Prince Vasily’s side in this political struggle.

Later, the modern historian Alexander Zimin (1920–1980) would say that Shemyaka fell victim to his own defeat. If the outcome of that conflict had been different, history with its historiographers would have taken his side 7 . However, the rigor of the hagiography’s heroes casts serious doubts on this hypothesis. The White Lake Monastery elders allowed Vasily to break his vow of not laying claim to Moscow, giving him full freedom to act. The Church hierarchs came to the capital occupied by Vasily to demonstrate their loyalty to him. One of the senior Church representatives of great authority who showed unconditional support for Vasily was Bishop Pitirim. He knew like no one else how much suffering Shemyaka’s ruinous campaigns had caused ordinary Russian people. Engaging the Perm Diocese’s most hardened enemies (the Vogul people and the inhabitants of Vyatka) for his purposes, Shemyaka scored repeated successes in his acts of banditry—blood was shed, and people in St. Pitirim’s flock were dying. Later Shemyaka took vengeance on the people of Perm by executing the Perm captains Emelka Luzkov and Euphemius Ezhvin for their willingness to fight on the side of the people of Veliky Ustyug, whose lands were being ravaged by his regiments 8 .

A few years later, Bishop Pitirim preached to the people of Vyatka who had cooperated with the rebellious prince’s excessive ambitions, and his words had a direct effect: Having laid siege to Ust-Vym in 1450, the Vyatchane’s army suddenly withdrew, leaving the town intact. The population of Perm remained indifferent to Dmitry’s calls. Everything seemed to indicate that the prince’s cherished ambitions were crumbling to dust, and the uncompromising and energetic Bishop Pitirim had largely contributed to that.

Shemyaka was determined to capture the bishop during one of his trips and by means of persuasion or promises force him to repeal the anathema against him. It remains unknown whether Dmitry hoped that psychological contact and mutual understanding might come during their talk tete-a-tete, or whether he believed in his own powers of persuasion, or had prepared some arguments which would justify his aggressive policy in the lands of Russia’s north, or perhaps meant to influence the bishop by threats and promises. 9 In any case, his main aim was to win St. Pitirim over.

This is how the Vychegda-Vym Chronicle describes this event: “In 6960 (1452) the cursed Shemyaka caught Bishop Pitirim on his way to Moscow, brought him to Ustyug, put him in jail and tortured him there; but the hierarch stood firm and did not repeal his anathema.” While in Ustyug in 1452, Dmitry followed all the movements of the Russian Church’s authoritative hierarch closely; and as soon as one of the prince’s spies reported St. Pitirim’s scheduled trip to Moscow, with the departure date and accompaniment (the bishop preferred to travel light, caring more about speed of travel than safety), Shemyaka didn’t fail to make use of such favorable circumstances.

St. Pitirim spent several months in confinement. Since the bishop yielded to no persuasion and flattering promises had no effect (Shemyaka saw in St. Pitirim a severe exposer of his heinous crimes, personal cruelty and dissoluteness), the prince’s arguments took another turn: he considered a prison cell, short rations, and threats of reprisal to be faster and safer means than heart-to-heart talks and attempts at self-justification. But that was in vain: St. Pitirim’s thoughts, words and deeds were only: “I am ready to die.” And St. Pitirim would have done his archpastoral duty and shown the cunning prince that he would not find the bishop to be a reed shaken with the wind (Lk. 7:24). However, this time God saved His servant’s life: The Muscovite army that was moving towards Uglich forced Dmitry to hastily retreat to Veliky Novgorod—the last bastion of anti-Moscow sentiment. St. Pitirim was released and resumed his archpastoral ministry with new enthusiasm.

The most important event St. Pitirim took part in was the Church Council of 1448 at which the Metropolitan of Moscow was elected and his appointment was confirmed without the Patriarch of Constantinople’s approval, for the first time in several centuries. In effect, the approval of the Synod of Russian Bishops of Bishop Jonah of Ryazan as the Metropolitan of Moscow meant the beginning of Russian autocephaly. This event seemed uncanonical to many hierarchs of the age, and the legitimacy of Jonah was questioned. Under the current circumstances (the falling away from Orthodoxy of Constantinople’s protégé Isidore, disorder in the Byzantine Empire) St. Pitirim couldn’t remain indifferent and expressed his stance with his characteristic straightforwardness and firmness: There shall be Russian autocephaly! With all the disadvantages that “breaking the cord” (connecting the Russian Church with Constantinople) entailed, now there was no alternative.

St. Pitirim’s life ended at the height of his archpastoral activity. Many years before, when he was being consecrated, standing by the gravestone of his predecessor in the Perm diocese St. Gerasim, St. Pitirim had been well aware that he could hardly expect a peaceful repose on his bed, surrounded by grateful disciples. The archpastoral ministry in a Perm that had not yet submitted to the Prince and the Metropolitan of Moscow was fraught with risks. On August 19, 1455, soon after a successful missionary journey to Great Perm and Cherdyn, after the end of the Sunday Liturgy at the Church of the Annunciation in Ust-Vym, St. Pitirim together with other clergymen and parishioners headed for a field between the Vym and the Vychegda to hold a prayer service 10 . But several miles away the Vogul Prince Asyka and his son Yushman were lying in ambush. Perhaps they decided to get even with St. Pitirim for baptizing the Vogul people living along the Pechora River, or they just seized the opportunity to make short work of their long-time antagonist in the person of the Bishop of Perm during another raid: “They were angry with the holy father because, contrary to their wishes, he tried his best to convert pagans to Orthodox faith and baptize them 11 .”

According to one version, some of the Vogul people found out about St. Pitirim’s plans by making inquiries with someone from a group of “heathen” who “had sailed up the Vychegda for a certain undertaking… in five days’ walk distance, in the place called Yur 12 .” When the whole procession appeared in the field of vision of Asyka’s detachment, the heathen rushed towards the defenseless worshippers from their hiding. Seeing the enemy, the holy bishop instantly ordered his companions to escape, hoping at the cost of his life to cover their retreat to the fortifications of Ust-Vym. St. Pitirim realized that he was the main target of the heathen attack and it was unlikely that his flock would be pursued. The holy hierarch met his death without murmuring, without making any attempts to defend himself: “And, seizing the saint with fury, they took turns beating him, tormenting him and putting the innocent man to death.” 13 The bishop’s body, which lay unburied for forty days, remained incorrupt, and his relics were enshrined at the Church of the Annunciation in Ust-Vym to the left of St. Gerasim’s shrine.

St. Jonah, baptizer of Great Perm

Holy Hierarch Jonah of Great Perm

Over the course of St. Jonah’s tenure in the bishopric of Perm the political situation in the region considerably improved: Moscow, in the person of Vasily the Blind and his heirs, completely crushed the opposition of local pagan princelings who would gather savage hordes to lay waste to peace-loving Zyryan towns and villages, along with the envious raiding bands of Novgorodians 15 (in fact no less pagan) who threatened the region’s development. The prayers of the holy men were answered, and St. Jonah died in advanced old age with a sense of accomplishment: The clouds that had been gathering over St. Stephen’s legacy were scattered by the labors and prayers of the holy men. “What lies in store for Perm?” the venerable elder Jonah asked himself on his deathbed in 1472. But the answer didn’t come immediately: New Christians would be born; they too would pray to Christ in this land and in the churches consecrated by him and his predecessors, after his death, after the death of his successor, and so on till the end of time. St. Jonah’s remains were laid to rest in the shrine containing the relics of Sts. Gerasim and Pitirim.

The the ministry of these three holy hierarchs of Perm who contributed to the enlightenment of the pagan tribes in northeastern Russia’s border regions in the fifteenth century is a story of how at the right time and place, there were men found in the Russian Church who fearlessly answered the Lord’s call, Whom shall I send, and who will go for us?: Here am I; send me (Is. 6:8).

Red Sox Rumors: 26-Year-Old Ace Lefty ‘Interested’ in Trade to Boston

T he Red Sox’s search for an ace starting pitcher this offseason was not, of course, much of a search at all. The team signed Lucas Giolito from the Nationals in January to an incentive-laced deal that could have run up to three years, but he’s already out for the 2024 season with elbow surgery. Giolito was not much of an ace to begin with, but now the Red Sox are without a real No. 1 starter at all.

What to do? Well, there is a chance that a stale winter rumor could yet be revived. Three months ago, the Red Sox were frequently connected with Marlins lefty Jesus Luzardo, who is 26 years old and still two years away from hitting unrestricted free agency.

And while many players might be reluctant to join an increasingly moribund bunch in Boston, according to Boston Globe beat writer Julian McWilliams, Luzardo is an exception. He has spent the entirety of his MLB career playing for tough markets in Oakland and Miami, so suiting up for a well-attended team like the Red Sox would certainly garner his interest, should the Red Sox look to put together a trade package for him.

Jesus Luzardo ‘Interested’ in Playing for Red Sox

McWilliams was speaking on the “Play Tessie” podcast  last week when the subject of the Red Sox’s absence of an ace was raised. The easy fix, and the one most often mentioned by those around baseball and covering the team, would be a signing of Rangers free-agent Jordan Montgomery.

But Montgomery after helping the Rangers to a World Series title, Montgomery is holding out for a long-term contract, especially if he is heading to a non-contender. Luzardo, though, can help immediately and has more upside than the 31-year-old Montgomery.

“I think he is a better pitcher, in terms of stuff-wise, than Jordan Montgomery is,” McWilliams said. “That’s a guy who—I covered Jesus when he was in Oakland—trust me, he would be interested in pitching. I talked to him last time when he was here and he was like, ‘Dude, I’ve never pitched in a place like this. It was an amazing experience, the mound is just different.’

“There would be interest on his part to be possibly dealt here but you don’t know what the Red Sox are thinking.”

Working on Carrying Bigger Innings Load

Of course, a few things would have to fall into place before the Red Sox could get Luzardo to Boston. The Marlins would need to put him back on the trade block—they never, apparently, came close to a deal involving Luzardo over the winter. And the Red Sox would need to see the value in short-term improvement while giving up some long-term assets.

Since becoming a consistent starter for the Marlins in 2022, he has a 14-17 record with a 3.52 ERA in 50 starts, and was seventh in the National League with 208 strikeouts in 2023.

Luzardo still needs to improve on being an innings-eating No. 1 starter, but he showed those traits last year and says he is making progress this Spring—even if his outing last week against the Astros found him battling from behind.

“Without a doubt, the focal point is getting through the innings that we need to get through, attack and getting ahead,” Luzardo said after that game, per the Miami Herald. “I felt like I threw strikes today, but it was mainly to get back in counts instead of getting ahead of the count.”

Trump asks Supreme Court to dismiss case charging him with plotting to overturn 2020 election

WASHINGTON (AP) — Lawyers for Donald Trump urged the U.S. Supreme Court on Tuesday to dismiss an indictment charging the former president with conspiring to overturn the results of the 2020 election , renewing their arguments that he is immune from prosecution for official acts taken in the White House.

Lower courts have already twice rejected the immunity claims , but Trump’s lawyers will get a fresh chance to press their case before the Supreme Court when the justices hear arguments on April 25 . The high court’s decision to consider the matter has left the criminal case on hold pending the outcome of the appeal, making it unclear whether special counsel Jack Smith will be able to put the ex-president on trial before November’s election.

In a brief filed Tuesday, Trump’s lawyers repeated many of the same arguments that judges have already turned aside, asserting that a president “cannot function, and the Presidency itself cannot retain its vital independence, if the President faces criminal prosecution for official acts once he leaves office.”

“A denial of criminal immunity would incapacitate every future President with de facto blackmail and extortion while in office, and condemn him to years of post-office trauma at the hands of political opponents,” the lawyers wrote. “The threat of future prosecution and imprisonment would become a political cudgel to influence the most sensitive and controversial Presidential decisions, taking away the strength, authority, and decisiveness of the Presidency.”

FILE - A demonstrator holds a sign outside of the U.S. Supreme Court, Feb. 8, 2024, in Washington. A pair of recent U.S. Supreme Court actions has opened the door to a new legal frontier in which local and state officials can be disqualified from office for life for engaging in "insurrection" or providing "aid and comfort" to enemies of the Constitution, based on a post-Civil War-era provision of the nation's foundational legal document and how the courts interpret it. (AP Photo/Mariam Zuhaib, File)

Smith’s team has said ex-presidents do not enjoy absolute immunity and that, in any event, the steps Trump is accused of taking in his failed but frantic effort to remain in power after he lost to Democrat Joe Biden would not count as official presidential acts.

U.S. District Judge Tanya Chutkan, who is presiding over the case, and a three-judge federal appeals panel in Washington have both agreed with Smith, but the case — once scheduled for trial on March 4 — has been effectively frozen for months as the appeal continues to wind through the courts.

Trump’s lawyers also told the justices that in the event they don’t accept the immunity arguments, they should send the case back to Chutkan for additional “fact-finding.” Such a move would result in even lengthier delays before a trial could be scheduled.

Trump’s position was supported in separate briefs filed Tuesday with the Supreme Court, including one from 18 Republican-led states.

The case is one of four state and federal criminal prosecutions that Trump is facing as he seeks to reclaim the White House. He and his lawyers have sought to delay the cases from proceeding to trial, a strategy that to date has yielded some success for the ex-president.

Of those four, only one — a case in New York charging Trump in connection with hush money payments meant to suppress claims of an extramarital sexual encounter — is on track to start in the next several months. The judge in that case delayed the trial last week until at least mid-April as he seeks answers about a last-minute evidence dump that the former president’s lawyers said has hampered their ability to prepare their defense.

Dylan Cease trade: Padres acquire White Sox ace in massive rotation upgrade as part of five-player swap

The padres are sending back three prospects and a major-league reliever.

dylan-cease.jpg

The San Diego Padres have acquired right-handed starter Dylan Cease from the Chicago White Sox , the team announced late Wednesday. Headed back to Chicago are right-handed pitching prospects Drew Thorpe, who was acquired in December as part of the Juan Soto trade, and Jairo Iriarte, outfield prospect Samuel Zavala and major-league reliever Steven Wilson.

In 2022, the 28-year-old Cease pitched to a 2.20 ERA with 227 strikeouts in 184 innings and led American League pitchers with 6.4 WAR. He finished second in the Cy Young voting to  Justin Verlander , who won the award unanimously. Cease took a step back in 2023, throwing 177 innings with 214 strikeouts and an unsightly 4.58 ERA. Chicago's league-worst defense did him no favors.

The Padres had a clear need an impact starter after losing 60% of their rotation to free agency. Cease figures to join Joe Musgrave and Mike King, obtained in the Juan Soto deal with the New York Yankees, to serve as the backbone of San Diego's starting five. Cease is one of only five pitchers to record 200 strikeouts in each of the last three seasons, joining  Corbin Burnes ,  Gerrit Cole ,  Kevin Gausman , and  Aaron Nola .  Our R.J. Anderson recently explained why Cease is such a prize  and it boils down to his premium bat-missing stuff, his room for growth, and his two affordable seasons of team control as an arbitration-eligible player.

The Padres will kick off Major League Baseball's new season on March 20 with a two-game set in Seoul, South Korea against the  Los Angeles Dodgers .

The White Sox went 61-101 this past season and longtime executives Kenny Williams and Rick Hahn were fired in August. Chris Getz, formerly the team's assistant general manager, was elevated to run baseball operations. In his first offseason, Getz did very little to the roster, with the highlights of the winter being  the Aaron Bummer trade  and signing Martín Maldonado and Paul De Jong. Instead, he held on to desirable players including All-Star center fielder  Luis Robert , who would fetch a massive haul, and others like  Garrett Crochet , Eloy Jiménez and Yoán Moncada. Along with Jiménez, Cease originally joined the White Sox in the José Quintana trade with the crosstown rival  Chicago Cubs  in the weeks leading up to the 2017 trade deadline.

The key pieces to the deal for the White Sox are the three prospects. Thorpe is a former second-round pick and a changeup artist who posted a 2.52 ERA and 4.79 strikeout-to-walk ratio in 139 innings split across High- and Double-A. He has middle-of-the-rotation upside. Ditto for Iriarte, who pairs a mid-90s fastball with a good slider. Iriarte has struggled with his command, due in part to a long arm stroke, and he could remain walk-prone heading forward. Zavala, meanwhile, is a 19-year-old outfielder with above-average strength and some strikeout issues.

Wilson, for his part, made more than 100 appearances at the big-league level for the Padres over the last two years. He compiled a 114 ERA+ and a 2.34 strikeout-to-walk ratio. He relies heavily on his sweeping slider and has four years of team control remaining, making him a potential trade candidate for the foreseeable future.
