  • Jeanneau Yachts

A true second home on the water, the Jeanneau Yachts 51 is an invitation to travel, a splendid setting for you to escape and to experience, in complete autonomy, unforgettable moments at sea.

Exceptional Comfort and Autonomy for Complete Serenity

Refined and elegant, the interior of the Jeanneau Yachts 51 shines in its style, as well as in its ergonomic design for longer cruises. Copious storage, a clever galley, a pantry, enabling you to install options such as a washing machine or a wine fridge, and especially, tanks and batteries for greater autonomy on board. Forward, the vast owner's cabin, bathed in light, affords maximum comfort and copious storage. Guests are not left out, with a spacious guest cabin – or two, according to your options – located aft, with plenty of headroom.

Well-Balanced Exterior Living Spaces

On the exterior, the cockpit features multiple living areas, distributed for the various moments and activities on board. The sheets of the mainsail and genoa are led back to the helm, clear of pas-sengers, who can enjoy relaxing on two comfortable sun loungers, located on either side of the companionway. At anchor, the cockpit accommodates six to eight people around a table, equipped with a refrigerated compartment, while a wide swim platform provides access to the sea or addi-tional space to sunbathe.

Jeanneau 51

As with other members of the Groupe Beneteau family, Jeanneau became one of the largest builders of production sailboats in the world by designing fine-sailing boats that appeal to a wide audience of sailors. At the top end of its Sun Odyssey line, the 519, for instance, can be ordered with three to five cabins, two to four heads, multiple styles of woods and fabrics, and even an in-line or aft galley, all of which fit within the same hull and deck. Depending on the layout below, the boat appeals to families, groups of friends, racers, cruisers and those looking for a waterfront home, or it can even go into business as a charter boat.

But the French builder took a different tack with its recently launched Jeanneau 51, a boat of about the same size, and the newest and smallest boat in the company’s Yachts range, which includes siblings up to 64 feet. By design, the 51 isn’t for everyone. First and foremost, it’s a couples boat, intended for owners who are ready to spend considerable time aboard, both at anchor and under sail, often alone, though with guests joining them from time to time.

In practice, that translates into a boat that can be easily sailed by a shorthanded crew, with multiple sail-plan options, upscale accommodations below for a couple of couples, and loads of storage space for gear, grub and toys.

Jeanneau introduced the boat to North America last winter at a splendid beach party in downtown Miami during the International Boat Show. The 51 sat anchored just offshore, literally in the spotlight. She looked elegant — and just a bit sporty — with a plumb bow, gracefully arching cabin top, dark-tinted ports and hard chines. In other words, the 51 fit the Yachts range to a T.

All Jeanneau Yachts have been designed by Philippe Briand, with interiors by Andrew Winch, and they share elements such as the “terrace,” where the aft deck between the twin wheels lifts and folds down with the swim platform to create a waterside space, complete with cushions, for lounging by the swim ladder.

Because so much time is spent in the cockpit, a lot of attention was paid to its layout. Forward of the twin wheels, there’s a substantial cockpit table, the aft end of which contains a locker for a life raft. It has teak drop leaves on either side, and there’s a well at its forward end for either storage or a cockpit fridge.

Winches usually found on the cabin top for halyards and reef lines have been moved to either coaming. That’s allowed the designers to put cushioned lounges to either side of the companionway. With the dodger down, they make swell sunbathing spots; with it up, they’re protected from wind and spray, and would be a fine place to relax while on watch or to keep the skipper company.

One more word about the cockpit before we move below: The double-ended mainsheet and jib sheets are led under the deck on either side to stoppers and a winch just forward of each wheel. This setup keeps the clutter of lines from invading those relaxing, and puts them right at the helmsman’s fingertips, where they belong.

jeaneau 51

Below, the standard boat, which is what I saw and sailed in Miami, has the owners cabin forward. A pair of overhead opening hatches let the air pour in, while ports in the hull let light do the same. This cabin is large enough to want to spend time in. Nightstands and benches flank a queen-size berth, with two large drawers beneath for storage. There’s more room to stash things in lockers that run fore and aft overhead along the cabin sides, plus a large hanging locker to port as you enter from the saloon. The cabin door is offset to port, which makes room for a large head and separate shower compartment to starboard.

The company calls the guest accommodations aft a VIP cabin. It’s to port of the companionway and has a square queen-size berth that extends to the boat’s centerline. There is impressive headroom over the berth for a boat this size, and the cabin offers plenty of storage space, should the visit be a long one.

There is an option for a smaller, third cabin to starboard, but in the standard layout, this space is a large workshop/storage area that can also be accessed from the cockpit. This could also be fitted out with a single bunk for a captain. Just forward is a utility room, where additional refrigeration or a washer/dryer can be located, or it could be fitted out as a day head.

I found the saloon, with its four opening overhead hatches, port lights in the hull and cabin windows, to be a lovely place to hang out, both at the dock and underway. To port, there’s a full-size, front-facing nav station at the foot of the companionway and a comfortable couch forward. Opposite, the U-shaped dining table is intended to seat six (as is the cockpit table). The galley, with loads of counter space, drawers and cupboards, is just aft, and has the cooking and refrigeration equipment you’d need for living aboard.

The boat I sailed had the standard in-mast furling main and 110 percent genoa, stored on a Facnor furler. There is a fitting on the double anchor roller for downwind sails, and an optional track is available by the mast for a self-tending jib, as well as a provision for adding a removable inner forestay, if one’s desired. This gives an owner many sail choices, depending on conditions.

The 51’s hull is hand-laid solid glass; the deck is resin-infused with a balsa core; high-density plywood is used where hardware is mounted. Keels are cast iron and available in deep (7-foot-5-inch) and shallow (5-foot-8-inch) configurations.

Our test boat had the optional 110-horsepower Yanmar engine with shaft drive. With the throttle down (3,200 rpm), we had plenty of power and cruised at better than 8 knots in a light chop; the boat comes standard with an 80-horsepower Yanmar and saildrive.

But really, the boat was meant to sail. In 10 to 12 knots, with the sails sheeted tight, the 51 heeled onto its chines and scooted along at 7 knots. Off the wind, the speedo dropped maybe a half a knot, hinting that a code zero on a flexible furler would be a sensible investment.

As is often the case with a range of boats that vary in size by just a few feet each, it’s tempting to pick a favorite. I’ve sailed on both the 58 and the 54, and if I were putting my own money down (in this case around $525,000 for a well-equipped model; the base boat’s $405,000), it would be on the 51. To my eye, all the pieces fit as they should. Below, it feels roomy; at the helm, manageable; and under sail, well, it was one sweet ride.

Exterior design

One third of the Oceanis 51.1’s hull is now stepped. In addition to the aesthetics of this flared shape, the new hull creates additional interior space allowing for exciting new layouts on a boat this size.  With emphasis on taut cruiser lines, she is a joy to move around and reassuringly safe. The spacious cockpit, many relaxation and sun bathing areas, as well as an aft swim platform, promise true comfort.

Interior Design

The large hull portholes bathe the boat in light and elegantly emphasize the interior design by Nauta Design creating a wonderful atmosphere.  A choice of brushed oak or mahogany woodwork ambiances increases the opportunities for customization.

RENEWAL OF THE CRUISING YACHT

The Oceanis 51.1 is spacious, elegant, cleverly designed, and fast, and successfully revisits the cruising yacht.

51 sailboat

The furling mast, self-tailing jib and all the halyards and sheets on the standard model are all brought back to a single winch at each of the helm stations, making her simple and easy to sail. As for harbour manoeuvring, Dock & Go technology simplifies everything.

THE HEIGHT OF COMFORT

The architectural choices that stand out on the Oceanis 51.1 are reflected in her habitability and an incredible amount of space. Inside, the owner cabin has an en-suite shower room and toilet, and a 1.6 m wide island bed.  A fully-fitted U-shaped galley has many convenient appliances. Truly a space to enjoy together, it is as pleasant to use under sail as it is at anchor.

Fitted with an extra-long carbon or aluminium mast, the Oceanis 51.1 First Line has up to 35% additional sail area in high-tech materials. The boat has a 2.8 m lead bulb keel in this high performance configuration. This reduces weight and hydrodynamic drag. To complete this version, a composite steering wheel, top-of-the-range deck fittings and boomsprit marry speed and cruising and promise exciting new sensations.

With a load capacity far greater than that of the Outremer 45, this best-selling family boat from the Outremer range, twice awarded European Yacht of the Year and Boat of the Year in the United States, is the benchmark cruising catamaran for families sailing around the world. Powerful yet easy, with unequaled resilience, it has proven itself on all the seas of the globe.

A perfectly protected and comfortable cockpit

The rigid bimini allows the whole cockpit to be protected and to completely isolate external elements thanks to protective covers. The U-shaped cockpit is particularly well protected, especially for young children. The cockpit table, in two parts, is easy to install, but it can also be transformed into a bed while keeping a table that can be used for meals on the side.

A customizable sail plan

You will enjoy a large choice of sails and rig: self-tacking solent, genoa, staysail, carbon or aluminum mast, fixed or rotating. To better adapt to your tastes and preferences, your sail plan can also be adapted! For sailors who want to favor ease of handling and simplicity, the self-tacking solent and a downwind gennaker will allow you to go to the far side of the world with the greatest of ease. Demanding sailors may prefer a genoa combined with a staysail, a gennaker or even a spinnaker. To lower the center of gravity and further improve performance in light airs, a carbon mast, possibly a rotating mast, is a good choice.

A comfortable payload

The hull is designed to accommodate all the comfort elements needed for blue water cruising. A beautiful tender, a watermaker, a washing machine, of course, but with more than 3 tons of possible payload, you can also add a generator, air conditioning, a dive compressor or heating, and beyond that, bikes, surfboards and paddleboards will keep you busy at stopovers, and children will be able to take all their favorite toys with them…

Video: test sailing the Allures 51.9

  • Toby Hodges
  • December 28, 2021

The alloy-hulled Allures 51.9 is set to be a much bigger boat than her predecessors, the Allures 51 and 52. Rupert Holmes and Toby Hodges report

Allures builds alloy centreboard cruisers with fibreglass decks and superstructures, which many contend is the the ideal combination for cruising. With that in mind, we picked the right boat to sail on a squally day off the coast of La Rochelle as he took the Allures 51.9 for a test sail.

The Allures 51.9 is the third generation of the flagship of this French bluewater range, and she retains the brand’s core concepts of a rugged aluminium hull combined with a composite deck that reduces weight and improves insulation, plus shoal draught and twin rudders.

However, it’s effectively a much larger boat than the previous Allures 51 and 52 models, with a longer waterline and more powerful broad stern sections, even though maximum beam is only 12cm greater.

An important part of the Allures 51.9 concept is also to raise the interior fit out to a higher level. Larger windows and overhead panels create even more natural light and there’s a 270° view from the generous navigation station at the forward end of the saloon.

Larger windows and overhead panels create plenty of natural light

Beyond this, the most obvious difference compared to the previous models is in the spacious full-beam aft master cabin, which is sure to be a major selling point for many prospective owners. The forward part of the accommodation can be arranged with either two equal en-suite double cabins, or a larger double guest cabin with a peninsula bed and more stowage, plus a smaller offset Pullman cabin with two single bunks.

The sizeable aft cabin doesn’t impact on the space available on deck and the cockpit is an impressive 6m long. Key sail handling operations are carried out from the security of the cockpit, making this an easy boat to sail short-handed.

The first example was launched in May and is fitted with an optional hard bimini. After sea trials the first Allures 51.9 will join the 2021/2022 Grand Large World Odyssey 500, taking the southern route via the Magellan Straits.

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

Spanish police arrest 3 people over the deaths of 5 migrants forced out of a smugglers' boat

MADRID — Spanish police have arrested three people for the deaths last November of five migrants who were threatened with a machete and forced to jump off the boat they were traveling in with dozens of other migrants, authorities said Monday.

According to a police statement, the five died on Nov. 29 off the southern coast of Cádiz. The police said two men and a woman were arrested earlier this month but gave no further details.

The people smugglers had threatened the five with a machete and forced them to jump into the Atlantic Ocean despite the strong currents and cold temperatures.

Thirty-seven migrants had traveled in the boat from Kenitra, Morocco. The statement said the migrants had paid between 3,000 euros ($3,270) and 12,000 euros ($13,000) for a place in the boat.

Video images in November showed many of the other migrants being forced out of the vessel closer to land, before the smugglers sped off in the powerful boat. Police said they found the boat and some documents later, which helped in tracking down the three suspects.

Four of the bodies were recovered within hours and a fifth was found days later. The migrants were identified with the help of DNA samples from a family in Morocco.

Tens of thousands of migrants from sub-Saharan countries try to reach Spain each year in large open boats launched from northwest Africa. Most go to the Canary Islands in the Atlantic , while others from Morocco, Algeria and Middle Eastern countries try to cross the Mediterranean Sea and Atlantic Ocean to mainland Spain.

Several thousands die making the hazardous journey.
