Grand Soleil 40 review: A rare-breed cruiser / racer

  • Rupert Holmes
  • April 27, 2023

A rare species? Here’s a cruiser-racer with good light airs performance, appealing accommodation and a proven heritage, the Grand Soleil 40

Product Overview

Price as reviewed:.

Grand Soleil’s latest launch, the Grand Soleil 40, is something of a rarity in today’s market – a cruiser-racer with a comfortable three-cabin interior, yet the ability to excel on the racecourse. Often such claims can be quickly dismissed, but the yard’s last new model, the GS 44, notched up two back-to-back ORC world championship victories.

The new Grand Soleil 40 is born of the same philosophy. Naval architect Matteo Polli was engaged to draw uncompromised hull lines that maximise performance and sailing qualities, particularly the hull balance as heel angle increases. Nauta Design was then tasked with optimising the accommodation within the available volume, while staying within a weight limit Polli specified for the interior and systems.

My first outing gave a chance to get the boat fully powered up at tight wind angles with the Code 0 in 12 knots of true wind, when boat speed consistently hovered around the hull speed of 8.3 knots. The helm positions are lovely and even though our test boat lacked foot chocks, the optional Flexiteek deck covering – which is specified by 90% of Grand Soleil owners – provided ample grip.

An efficient and deep single rudder is set well forward on the Grand Soleil 40. The helm stays light even when the boat is pressed hard, with the rudder retaining excellent grip, though feedback increases reassuringly as rudder loads build. Close-hauled in 9 knots of true breeze we made 6 knots, at an apparent wind angle of 33-34°.

Always sailing

My next sail was on a stereotypically gorgeous autumn Mediterranean afternoon, with temperature in the mid 20s and generally light airs, the true wind speed mostly around five knots.

Not long ago we wouldn’t have bothered sailing in such light conditions. However, despite the huge stability that’s so reassuring in heavy weather, today’s best designs also excel in light airs. This is often particularly true of single-rudder boats designed primarily for Mediterranean conditions that, despite wide beam on deck, don’t have a huge wetted surface area.

Even in these light airs the Grand Soleil 40 felt responsive and rewarding. Close-hauled we made a fairly consistent 4 knots of boat speed, though unsurprisingly this dropped quickly if you tried to pinch up too high. At optimal apparent wind angles for the Code 0 of around 60-65° we consistently sailed at the true wind speed in 4-6 knots, accelerating to 7 knots when the breeze built to 9 knots.

The ability to put in decent passage times in very gentle breezes is a game changer that vastly reduces the time spent under power and maximises enjoyment and satisfaction in fine weather.

Sadly we never had enough breeze to enjoy fast surfing conditions downwind, but a close look at the underwater profile shows that, despite the constraints imposed by displacement of 7.5 tonnes, the designer has incorporated a fairly flat run aft that will promote easy surfing. Polli avoided the latest fashions for very broad forward sections, which means they balance the finer stern sections well and give a more comfortable motion at sea.

Spec to suit

Three torpedo bulb keels are offered, including a 2.4m draught IRC optimised option and a 2.1m ORC version. The latter has no extra ballast, despite the reduced draught, because the calculations assume there will be crew weight on the rail for stability. Alternatively, there is a shallow 1.85m option with extra ballast for cruising.

At first sight the shallow cockpit, combined with a relatively low boom, looks as though it could be problematic. However, the test boat’s boom clears all but the tallest people above head height and it would be possible to have the clew of the mainsail cut slightly higher to increase clearance or give better headroom under a bimini. Despite the boat’s generous beam the cockpit is not overly wide – at the front you can even brace your feet on the opposite cockpit bench.

We tested the race version of the Grand Soleil 40, with a 70cm taller keel-stepped aluminium mast (only 20% of owners opt for a carbon rig) and a 60cm longer carbon sprit, plus a mainsheet traveller in the cockpit. The yard says this is the configuration specified by the overwhelming majority of clients, other than those in the Aegean where winds are consistently stronger. The race pack also includes rod rigging with graduated bottle screws and a single Harken hydraulic backstay.

The GS 40 has a great sailing set up for the helmsman and trimmers and a smart winch layout, although rope tail bins forward would help. Photo: Ludovic Fruchaud

In common with most of today’s performance yachts the rig is set well aft, which allows more options for efficient headsails and reaching sails. The standard configuration is for a self-tacking headsail with just four winches, two aft on the coaming for the mainsheet and two on the coachroof. However, all but a handful of owners opt for a larger blade jib, with conventional towed genoa sheets cars on the coachroof and an extra pair of winches on the coaming. Our test boat had an optional upgrade to electric for the starboard coachroof winch and it’s possible to add headsail sheet inhaulers, although these were not fitted. Disappointingly, there was no provision for rope bags or bins at the companionway.

There are only two stowage spaces on deck, plus a liferaft locker directly accessed from the electrically opening hinged bathing platform (which has a manual override). The large lazarette aft has a small opening, but is generously sized even if a tender needs to be fully deflated for stowage. The chain locker is at the bottom of the forward sail locker, so the latter isn’t a guaranteed clean and dry compartment, although this is unlikely to be a serious inconvenience for boats that don’t anchor in mud.

The comparatively aft mast position required the interior design team to consider different layout options than usual. This means there’s less length available for the central saloon and galley areas, but the generous maximum beam of 4.1m at the aft end of the galley means there is still a feeling of plenty of volume and enough space to handle and stow race sails.

Working the spaces

Historically, sub-40ft performance boats have rarely offered a sizable owner’s cabin. However, this boat excels in that respect and has room for a large peninsula bed, plus ample floor space. There’s also excellent stowage volume below the bunk, although you have to hold the mattress up in an awkward fashion to access it. In addition, there’s a decent sized full-height locker with deep shelves, plus extensive shallow eye level shelving for small items.

The interior has seven forward-facing hatches, which give good natural ventilation when at anchor. Photo: Ludovic Fruchaud

The optional en-suite is well appointed, but lacks a separate shower stall, as does the aft heads. Both aft cabins have large berths with good clearance above and a deceptive amount of storage, including a large bin outboard of the bunk in the area of the chine.

The saloon area is split between a generous 2.6m-long linear galley to port, and table with a 2.4m L-shape settee, plus a small aft facing chart table, opposite. The galley has twin sinks, good worktop space with deep fiddles, a top-loading 75lt fridge and multiple cupboards and drawers, plus an optional 42lt front-loading fridge. There’s easily accessed dry stowage under the central saloon seats.

A compact chart table and a bright mood. Photo: Ludovic Fruchaud

Optional eye-level lockers in the saloon and galley significantly increase easily accessed stowage, at the price of a little extra weight. The standard arrangement is fine for typical Mediterranean summer sailing, mostly in shorts and T-shirts, though those who spend longer on board and sail out of season or in cooler climates will appreciate the extra locker space.

Even then, tankage is not particularly generous, at 170lt for fuel and 300lt for freshwater.

Around 80% of Grand Soleils are used predominantly for cruising. This design, with its spacious and welcoming accommodation, has a lot to offer in that respect. Undoubtedly many will be tempted by the owner’s cabin, which makes the boat stand out in this part of the market, even if the linear galley is not ideal for extended passagemaking. At the same time, there’s no reason this boat couldn’t be as successful on the racecourse as the GS 44, although the 7.5 tonne displacement means it won’t deliver the same thrills downwind in a stiff breeze as lighter planing designs. But owners can blend elements from both the Race and Performance versions to create the boat that best suits their needs. Cantiere del Pardo has not offered a yacht of this length for the past 15 years, yet historically this was an important size for Grand Soleil – 180 of the previous version sold. There’s every chance this one will be just as successful.

Grand Soleil 40

yacht test grand soleil 40

If you’ve spent any time sailing in Europe lately, you’re probably familiar with Grand Soleil’s racy performance cruisers. For 30 years, the Italian yard Cantiere del Pardo has built high-quality sailboats designed by the likes of Germán Frers and Judel/Vrolijk & Co. In the same tradition, the new Grand Soleil 40 comes from Botin Carkeek Yacht Design, a Spanish firm whose designs dominate European raceboat circuits.

With a tapered cabin house, uncluttered decks, and elegant Italian interior design, the Grand Soleil 40 has a classic look. Like Botin Carkeek’s raceboats, the hull has a longer waterline, reduced wetted area, and a deep, efficient rudder and keel designed and built based on research by the automaker Ferrari’s aerodynamics department. The hull laminate consists of unidirectional fiberglass and vinylester resin, with a cross-linked PVC foam core called Termanto used above the waterline and in the deck layup.

Bonded inside the hull, an epoxy-coated galvanized-steel grid system absorbs the loads from the chainplates, keel, and mast step. Cruising World’s team of Boat of the Year judges agreed that the boat felt remarkably solid, but we wondered about potential long-term problems with the mild, or low-carbon, steel. Grand Soleil representatives, though, assured me that rust and corrosion don’t become problems over time, and they also pointed out that the entire grid is accessible for inspection by way of screw-held sole panels.

The GS 40 has a sleek and purposeful deck, with halyards and reef lines led aft under the coachroof. Like many new designs, however, cabin-top handrails don’t extend ahead of the mast, so going forward in a blow may be dicey. I did find that the optional teak decking provided excellent traction and the side decks were easy to navigate. With the adjustable genoa tracks tucked against the cabin side, the only potential impediments are the outward-opening ports in the long cabin windows.

Some of the same features that make the boat fast and easy to control also call for vigilance on the part of the crew. The long, low boom maximizes sail area but can be an occasion for head banging, and the convenient location of the Harken traveler-just forward of the wheel-means that a slack mainsheet could foul the binnacle when changing tacks from reach to reach.

Moving around the wide cockpit was easy, but I’d have appreciated foot braces. Our test boat was equipped with only one set of cockpit winches, so the mainsheet led to the cabin top, out of reach of the helm. With a second pair, the double-ended sheet can be led to primaries close to the helm, at either end of the traveler, and that’s an option most owners buy. The 12-inch bridgedeck, required for European Union certification, should do a good job of keeping the interior dry in case of boarding waves. The companionway boards have a neat self-stowing system, but when they’re closed, there’s a finger-width gap underneath, which is something to address before heading offshore.

For such a high-performance boat, the Grand Soleil’s interior is remarkably inviting, with cherry-stained mahogany and a wide-open feel. A choice of one or two heads is offered in the three-cabin layout. The substantial master cabin forward (with optional en-suite head) boasts a queen-size centerline berth. I always climb into berths and turn on the reading lights to see if they’re usable, and the Grand Soleil was up to my test.

In the main saloon, the C-shaped dinette includes a stand-alone bench on centerline, which also provides back bracing for the cook in the in-line galley to port. The countertops have excellent fiddles, but the upper lockers lack any means of restraining the contents. The deep, stainless-steel double sink has an easily accessible seacock that may need to be closed against flooding when the boat’s well heeled on starboard tack. The small, two-burner stove has room to swing if the factory-installed rubber stop is removed; cruising cooks may want to install a stove guardrail.

I find it distressing that many new boats-even those intended for long-distance cruising-have navigation desks unfit for anything but half-size chart kits. Not this boat. While the nav area has lots of extra space in which to add more electronics and a desk ergonomically designed for laptop use, it also has space to spread out a full-size chart. The electrical panel is neatly installed, as are all of the systems, and drip rails under the ports help protect electronics from damage.

Opposite the nav desk is the main head and shower. Twin quarter cabins with standing headroom, hanging lockers, and double berths extend under the cockpit. The split mattresses allow lee cloths to be rigged for use as sea berths. Panels in each cabin and under the companionway ladder provide access to the engine.

On the day we test-sailed the boat, the wind was gusting into the low 30s. We assumed that we’d tuck in a second reef but soon realized it wasn’t necessary. With the genoa partly furled and one reef in the main, the boat felt solid and under control. The standard sails set very nicely when reefed, and steering was a dream.

The Grand Soleil should be a nimble upwind boat: Even in fairly heavy winds, steering through constant puffs with less-than-perfect sail trim, we tacked through 110 degrees while going more than 8 knots. On a reach in 25 knots the G.P.S. showed 7.4 knots speed over ground.

Under power, the 40-horsepower Volvo Penta saildrive and two-bladed folding prop moved the boat smartly at 6.6 knots at 2,500 rpm and 7.6 knots at 2,900 rpm.

The Grand Soleil 40 is seriously fun. After sailing it-and gushing about the exceptional helm, the stability, and the powerful big-boat feel-our team of judges noted the price: $350,000 seemed low for so much boat. For club racing, daysailing, or coastal cruising, the Grand Soleil 40 deserves serious consideration. With a few minor additions and changes and an experienced crew, I wouldn’t hesitate to sail it offshore.

Grand Soleil GS 40

Speed, elegance, ergonomics, safety. These are the four key words behind the creation of the Grand Soleil 40, a model that just a few months after its launch (the debut took place at the Cannes Yachting Festival 2022 ) promises to replicate the great success of the GS 44, winner of the 2021 and 2022 ORC World Championships.

This 40-footer , available in both the Performance and Race versions, bears once again the signature of Matteo Polli for the naval architecture and Nauta Design responsible for the exterior and interior design. The lines of the hull and the naval architecture of the GS 40 maintain the strong vocation for performance, without sacrificing volumes, maximizing space and improving comfort onboard. This is the result of the synergy between Nauta Design (interior & exterior design) and the Shipyard’s Technical Office , who have brought to the water a sailing boat with clean and functional layouts in both the interior and exterior areas.

GS 40 Grand Soleil

“The hull lines: an evolution of the concept studied for the GS 44, with the utmost attention to the balance of volumes”.   Matteo Polli , Naval Architect.

“ The design brief for the new Grand Soleil 40 was very similar to that of the GS 44, but with the request to further raise the bar, given the smaller size. The overall length of 40 feet, one of the most common on the market, presents a great challenge in finding a compromise between internal volumes and sporting characteristics. Thanks to the experience gained on the 44 and a well-established team of designers, it was possible to find the perfect combination of performance and comfort. The hull lines are an evolution of the concepts studied for the GS 44, giving maximum attention to the balance of volume as the heel increases. The bow profile remains very fine to maintain good performance in light airs and ensure a smooth passage through the waves.

As on the GS 44, great importance was placed on the aft positioning of the shaft, enabling Nauta Design to develop an innovative layout and obtaining a benefit on both performance and comfort.  It was also chosen to keep a centreboard with a single rudder blade in a very advanced position, a solution that I believe is ideal for both cruising and racing. ”

Relaxation and performance, GS 40: pure Grand Soleil DNA

The winning performance is always at hand on the new GS 40. The deck plan of the Performance version includes 4 winches as standard: two on the coachroof and two next to the helm positions. The self-tacking jib, also as standard, is equipped with a recessed track, while the mainsheet is positioned to a fixed point in the cockpit.

Note the position of the mast which, as on the GS 44, has a retracted arrangement to maximize the “J” and therefore the base of the head sails. Also available in carbon in the Race version, together with an increased sail area compared to the standard version.

“ The GS 40 represents the synthesis of the best we have managed to put on the GS 44.”  Massimo Gino, Nauta Design co-founder.

“ We have found the right proportions to have a large and functional deck for both racing and cruising” – explains Massimo Gino of Nauta Design  – “ where all the lines and deck gear have been studied with the naval architect Matteo Polli and Cantiere del Pardo to find ergonomic positions and solutions, practical and functional for both uses. In a light and sleek hull, we were able to include all the necessary functions on a 40 foot boat that also offers comfort and functionality in the interior. From the cabin to the owner’s heads, from the galley to the dinette, the volumes, stowage and all functions are precise and well balanced. The rich and classic style is the one that has been well tested and appreciated aboard all Grand Soleil’s ”.

Grand Soleil GS 40

Winning in a regatta and sailing in comfort: the same design goal

Wide, practical, efficient interiors both for cruising use and for moving with agility during regattas. Below deck, the GS 40 offers two options: in the standard version there are three cabins and one heads to offer more spacious stowage and a greater walkway area into the owner’s cabin, while the optional layout includes three cabins and two heads. The interior has also been designed to maximize the space between the living and galley areas. Relaxation and comfort for the owner and their guests when cruising can also meet the needs of the regatta sailors. The GS 40 is equipped with a built-in galley with spacious worktop (2.6 meters with white resin top), completed by a generous 75-litre fridge with double top opening. An optional 42-litre fridge with front opening is also available. The beam of the central saloon area is also designed for racing needs: the passage can be used for stowing the sails, for a quick change of equipment.

Grand Soleil GS 40

Race, the legacy of a world championship range

The Race version amplifies the competitive potential of a boat already geared to racing. In this version the deck plan has been adapted to optimize sail performance, including the addition of 2 winches, race bowsprit, a hydraulic backstay, jib tracks in transverse position and a recessed mainsail track.

The standard draft is already designed from a racing point of view (IRC) with a depth of 2.4 meters, cast iron blade and lead torpedo. Also available on the GS 40 are two other keel options: the first 2.1 meters optimized for ORC competitions, the second shallow draft of only 1.85 meters. Both the race and performance versions include a stern platform that can be opened electronically, equipped with a ladder for easy boarding to the swim platform.

“ A boat that is easy to use, luxurious and at the same time competitive in it ’ s performance”.  Marco Gugnoni, Cantiere del Pardo Technical Office.

“ With the Grand Soleil 40 Performance project we have best expressed the DNA of the historic brand of Cantiere del Pardo. From the early stages, the boat was designed with two distinct souls but with the same quality and style which distinguish all the Grand Soleil hulls. The Performance version is optimized to easily navigate safely, while the Race version is designed to be competitive on the race course. The experience we have acquired in the design of the older sister, the Grand Soleil 44, has allowed us to further refine all the parameters to create a boat that is both easy to sail and performs brilliantly. A concentration of know-how and innovation regarding the deck equipment and large cockpit, which tempts even the most experienced competitor. Going below deck you enter a luxurious and fresh space, always functional in its details. The collaboration with the Nauta Design studio has given life to a layout created to maximise the volume of each cabin. The feeling onboard is what every Grand Soleil has in common: high quality finishes and timeless design “.

Review: New 2023 Grand Soleil 40

The new Grand Soleil 40 will be available this year! Let's talk about the key features of the yacht, its advantages and disadvantages.

Grand Soleil 40 real racing yacht

How is a racing yacht usually represented? Minimum amenities, maximum speed - everything in such a yacht is designed so as not to distract the racers from the regatta. However, Grand Soleil 40, like its predecessor Grand Soleil 44, is trying to break stereotypes.

The development of the yacht was carried out by the naval architect and designer Matteo Polli, who was involved in the design of the yacht. In order to create an optimal racing yacht with really comfortable interiors, Nauta Design was also brought in. Nauta Design had limitations - it was necessary to create a feeling of comfort in the rooms, but without capital weighting of the case.

The boat's displacement is only 7.5 tons, but Matteo and Nauta Design were able to create a practical and easy-to-handle boat hull. Modern racing yachts perform well in strong wind conditions. However, many boaters note that racing boats can be a bit clumsy in calmer conditions. Judging by the reviews of the reviewers, the Grand Soleil 40 does not have such a problem. It performs equally well in both strong and weak winds.

Comfort and regattas

Although the Grand Soleil 40 is positioned as an “option for everyone”, but still it is the fans of sailing and regattas who are the target audience. The shipyard offers three keel options - with a draft of 2.4 meters (for IRC regattas), 2.1 meters (for ORC regattas) and a shallow keel of 1.85 m (for cruisers). The ORC regatta variant has no additional ballast. The shipyard reports that in this version “the weight of the crew will act as an additional ballast”.

The cockpit of the yacht is small, and the boom is located quite low. However, this can only be a problem for people taller than 190 cm. Most yachts in the series have an aluminum mast, but if the owner wishes, a carbon mast can be installed. The shipyard says that 20% future owners are choosing carbon masts.

All sail controls are brought to the cockpit, which makes the boat as comfortable as possible. The standard version of the Grand Soleil 40 offers a mainsail with four winches. Two winches are installed closer to the stern, and two more on the roof of the saloon. The shipyard also reports that most of the customers choose the version with two additional winches to control the genoa.

There are several lockers on deck to store your belongings and a separate locker for rescue equipment. It is located behind the bathing platform on the transom. The platform itself is electrically controlled.

Grand Soleil 40 interior

There are three cabins on board. The master cabin still does not have as much space as we would like, but still more than in the past boats of the shipyard. There is a fairly roomy locker under the bed, but to access things, it is not necessary to raise the mattress in the most convenient way. The additional bathroom is securely equipped, but, alas, there is no separate shower.

The two aft cabins have plenty of space with large beds. The lockers in these cabins are not under the beds, but behind them. In general, there were no particular complaints from the reviewers towards the cabins. The boat, being originally sharpened for sailing and racing, was able to give the owners a sufficient level of comfort, but still falls short of the competition.

In the saloon, there is a longitudinal galley on the port side. There is a fairly large work surface with deep sides, two full-fledged sinks, a convenient refrigerator with a volume of 75 liters, with a bunch of lockers and drawers. There is also an additional 42 liter refrigerator. Under some seats in the cabin there is additional storage space for provisions.

Near the galley there is a comfortable small sofa with a dining table, and behind it is a large L-shaped sofa. There are a lot of lockers of different sizes and in the most unexpected places in the cabin.

  • GRAND SOLEIL 44 Performance : ganz typisch – trotzdem anders

Khabarovsk: The city on the 5,000 ruble banknote

Located at the confluence of the Amur and Ussuri rivers, Khabarovsk (6140 kilometers from Moscow) is the second largest city in the Russian Far East after Vladivostok. Having grown from a small military post in the middle of the 19 th  century, the city got its name from the famous Russian explorer Yerofei Khabarov, who surveyed the Amur River. Currently Khabarovsk is the administrative center of the Far Eastern Federal District.

Where to go on a first date with the city

Source: Lori/Legion-Media

The city was founded by Count Nikolai Muravyov-Amursky and the main street is named in his honor. Modern buildings and shopping centers coexist with old stone houses of gray and red. A monument to this famous Russian statesman can be found in the city’s Central Park. This statue can also be seen on the 5,000-ruble banknote.

The best way to explore Khabarovsk is on foot, beginning at Lenin Square and working your way towards the banks of the Amur River. The two main boulevards, Amursky and Ussuriisky, run parallel to each other. The architecture on Lenin and Serysheva streets, with its mostly Stalin-era structures, differs from the beautiful pre-revolutionary buildings on ul. Muravieva-Amurskogo. The Amursky and Ussuriisky boulevards did not exist until the mid-1960s.

Khabarovsk is not a typical Russian city along the Trans-Siberian Railway. The unusual fusion of Russian and Chinese cultures is felt in the food, culture and even lifestyle of its residents. Japanese touches complement this picture in the form of blossoming cherry trees and cars with steering wheels on the right hand side. That Khabarovsk has such a strong Asian influence should not seem surprising, as the city is located only 17 kilometers from the state border with China. The nearest Chinese settlement, Fuyuan, is 65 kilometers down the river from Khabarovsk.

Khabarovsk’s gem is its picturesque river embankment and the Amursky rail and road bridge, which is also depicted on the 5,000-ruble banknote. Just like the Eiffel Tower, this bridge won the gold medal of the World Exhibition in Paris in the early 20 th  century.

Khabarovsk's museums

yacht test grand soleil 40

Khabarovsk became famous during the Soviet period for a popular song about border guards that stand on the "high banks of the Amur" and protect the motherland. It is not hard to find old cannons on display in the city that were fired during the Russo-Japanese War.

At the present time Khabarovsk is the headquarters of Russia’s Far Eastern Military District.

The Military Historical Museum of the Far Eastern Military District depicts in great detail everything you ever wanted to know about the formation and development of the army in the Far East. Models of weapons from different years are exhibited over the museum’s 13 halls and heavy military equipment is placed in the courtyard of an observation deck. The museum itself is located in a historic building right on the bank of the Amur River.

The Far Eastern Art Museum, also known as the "Far East Tretyakov Gallery" features original works of ancient Russian art, as well as local artists from the Amur Region. Among the artists on display are Ivan Aivazovsky, Ivan Shishkin, Ilya Repin, Vasily Surikov, Isaak Levitan, Alexander Benois, Apollinaris Vasnetsov and Mikhail Vrubel. Many of these works of art came to the Far East from museums in Moscow and St. Petersburg.

The Khabarovsk Regional Museum holds collections of flora and fauna, ethnography exhibits of indigenous peoples and Slavic settlers, and displays by paleontologists and geologists that tell the city’s story from its foundation. The only archaeological museum in the Far East is the Okladnikov Museum, which features 120,000 ancient artifacts pertaining to the Amur Region.

For those traveling with children, Khabarovsk has special kid-friendly attractions including an aquarium featuring fresh water fish of the Amur River basin, as well as the Gaidar Amusement Park and the Khabarovsk State Circus.

A living museum of Far Eastern flora can be found at the Khabarovsk Arboretum, established as an experimental laboratory in 1896. It has collected about 300 plant species that grow in the Ussuri taiga as well as those from the Himalayas, Central Asia and North America.

Khabarovsk is known for its parks such as Dynamo or Yuri Gagarin Park. The Central Park of Culture and Relaxation is perfect for taking leisurely strolls and leads to the river station located within the park, where you can take a boat ride on the Amur River. Especially memorable is taking a walk along the river at night, when Khabarovsk is illuminated by hundreds of colored lights. In the park there is also an observation deck that offers a spectacular view of the Amur.

The cultural center of the Far East

The oldest Orthodox Church in Khabarovsk is a Church of St. Innocentius  of Irkutsk, erected in 1870 in honor of the patron saint of Siberia and the Far East. The impressive Holy Transfiguration Cathedral (its height with golden domes is 95 meters), built from the donations of inhabitants of the region, is the third largest temple in Russia after Moscow's Christ the Savior Cathedral and St. Isaac's Cathedral in St. Petersburg.

Several major theaters operate in Khabarovsk, which is often called the cultural center of the Far East. These include the Khabarovsk Regional Musical Theater performing classic operetta and musical comedy, and the Regional Drama Theatre featuring international and domestic classics. There is also the Triad professional mime theater, which offers unusual performances in interesting interiors.

Why you should climb the Khabarovsk cliff

yacht test grand soleil 40

Khabarovsk is hot and humid in the summer with temperatures reaching 30 C and cold and dry in the winter with the average temperature being -24 C. However, the temperatures often drop below -30, making Khabarovsk the coldest city with a population of 500,000 or more in the world. There are massive ice sculptures on Lenin Square from January until the spring thaw in April as part of the annual Amur Crystal and Ice Fantasy festivals. City Day, celebrated on the last Saturday of May, is a good reason to visit Khabarovsk at the beginning of summer.

No matter the season, if it is clear, then climb the Khabarovsk cliff (ul. Shevchenko 15), a true symbol of the city. A famous building was constructed here on a rocky promontory 70 years ago by an architect named Starikov. At first it was a station for military observation, later becoming a rescue station. After the building was transferred to Khabarovsk Central Park of Culture and Recreation, a viewing platform was added that now offers the best panoramic views of the Amur River. Take a selfie here with a view of the Amur River at the monument to Count Muravyov-Amursky.

History of Khabarovsk

Foundation of khabarovsk.

Until the mid-19th century, the territory of present-day Khabarovsk, in accordance with the Nerchinsk Treaty, was located on a neutral territory, not delimited between the Qing Empire (China) and the Russian Empire. In 1858, the Aigun Treaty was signed, according to which the entire left bank of the Amur River passed into the possession of the Russian Empire, the right bank of the Amur to the Ussuri River became part of China.

After signing the treaty, the 13th Siberian Line Battalion was sent to establish settlements along the Amur. One of the new settlements was named Khabarovka - in honor of Yerofey Khabarov, a 17th-century Russian explorer known for his attempts to colonize this region for Russia. In 1864, the first plan for the development of the future town was made. By 1865, there were 1,294 residents in Khabarovka - mostly soldiers and officers.

Initially, only military buildings were constructed in Khabarovka. Five years after the foundation, there were already 167 buildings in the settlement including the house of the commander, barracks, warehouses, residential buildings, and trading shops. Due to its very convenient location at the confluence of the Amur and Ussuri rivers, Khabarovka began to develop very quickly.

Following the military settlers, civilians began to arrive from all parts of the Russian Empire including Moscow and St. Petersburg. At that time, their main occupations were hunting, fur trade, and fishing. The settlers were provided with free fertile land, which also contributed to the influx of new residents to Khabarovka.

More historical facts…

Khabarovsk - a regional center of the Russian Far East

In 1873, the first elementary school was opened in Khabarovka. The Russo-Chinese treaty of 1881 allowed duty-free trade in the 50-kilometer land border zone and the goods of Chinese and English manufacturers could be bought half cheaper here.

By 1880, Khabarovka was already a rather large settlement of Primorsky Oblast with a population of 2,036 people (47.3% - military, 23% - bourgeois, 21.3% - foreigners (mainly Chinese workers), 1.4% - representatives of the indigenous population, and 7% - officers, clergy, merchants, industrialists).

At that time, the capital of Primorsky Oblast was Nikolayevsk (today’s Nikolayevsk-on-Amur), but Khabarovka had a more advantageous geographical position, as it was located at the crossroads of all communication lines from Vladivostok and the coast. In 1880, Khabarovka became the center of Primorsky Oblast and transformed into a town. In 1893, the town was renamed Khabarovsk.

In 1894, the Amur (Khabarovsk) department of the Russian Geographical Society was created with a museum (the Khabarovsk Regional Museum of Local Lore) and a library. In 1895, the first vocational technical school was opened - the railway school of the Ministry of Railways. During these years, a lot of stone houses were built in Khabarovsk. Most of them are preserved in the city to this day.

In 1897, the first train departed from the Khabarovsk railway station. The Ussuri Railway connected Khabarovsk with Vladivostok. The population of the town was about 14,900 people.

Khabarovsk in the 20th century and beyond

In 1916, the construction of a railway bridge over the Amur was completed and Khabarovsk was connected by the Amur Railway with Eastern Siberia.

November 14, 1922, after the liquidation of the Far Eastern Republic, Khabarovsk became part of the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic. On December 6, 1923, the administrative center of the Russian Far East was transferred to Khabarovsk from Chita. In 1925, the railway bridge over the Amur was restored.

On January 4, 1926, Far Eastern Krai was formed with its center in Khabarovsk. The population of the city was about 52 thousand people. On October 23, 1934, the Far Eastern Agricultural Research Institute was established in Khabarovsk. In 1936, Khabarovsk was connected by rail with Komsomolsk-on-Amur.

By 1939, the population of Khabarovsk increased to 200 thousand people. From June 1940, the command of the Far Eastern Front was deployed in Khabarovsk. From August 1945, the headquarters of the High Command of Soviet Forces in the Far East and the command of the 1st Far Eastern Front were stationed in the city.

On March 16, 1946, the Khabarovsk Drama Theater was created. In 1949, a trial was held in Khabarovsk in the case of former members of the Japanese Kwantung Army. The most significant changes in the city occurred in the post-war decades.

In 1960, the Khabarovsk television studio began broadcasting. On October 24, 1964, the Khabarovsk Shipyard produced the first “Rocket”, a famous Soviet hydrofoil ship. On September 1, 1967, the Khabarovsk Institute of Physical Education (the Far Eastern State Academy of Physical Culture) was opened. On September 1, 1968, the Khabarovsk State Institute of Arts and Culture was opened.

In 1975, the population of Khabarovsk was about 502,000 people. By 1990, Khabarovsk was formed as a multifunctional economic center of national importance. The population reached its maximum of 616 thousand people.

In May 2000, federal districts were formed in the Russian Federation. Khabarovsk became the center of the Far Eastern Federal District. In 2008, the railway station was completely renovated. In 2009, the reconstruction of the bridge across the Amur was finished. In late summer - early fall of 2013, Khabarovsk was affected by flooding, which became the strongest over the entire observation period since 1897.

On December 13, 2018, the center of the Far Eastern Federal District was moved from Khabarovsk to Vladivostok.

Khabarovsk - Features

Khabarovsk is often considered the capital of the Russian Far East. The city is located in Asia, in the southern part of the Central Amur Lowland, near the confluence of the Amur and Ussuri rivers, about 17 km from the border with China. The city stands on the elevated right bank of the Amur River, the relief of which is diverse and complex.

The distance from Moscow to Khabarovsk by roads is about 8,250 km, to Vladivostok - 750 km. About half of the population of Khabarovsk Krai lives in this city. Khabarovsk is a bit similar to the large cities of the Volga region. Here you can see similar new buildings wedging chaotically into the cityscape and an abundance of pre-revolutionary architecture.

Although Khabarovsk can’t boast of Vladivostok’s seaside flavor or all-Russian sights, it’s still worth coming here, and to some extent this is inevitable: all routes of the Khabarovsk region converge here.

The climate in Khabarovsk is temperate monsoon, with snowy cold winters and hot humid summers. The average temperature in January is minus 20.5 degrees Celsius, in July - plus 21.8 degrees Celsius. The number of sunny days per year is significantly higher than in a number of large cities of Russia (up to 300 days a year; in Moscow and St. Petersburg - about 100).

From November to March, very dry and frosty continental air with clear and sunny weather is established over the city. The best time to visit Khabarovsk is June and September when the weather is not too hot.

Khabarovsk is a major hub at the junction of water, air, rail, and road communications from the north and west of the country, Primorye, Sakhalin, and the ports of Khabarovsk Krai. The Trans-Siberian Railway passes through the city, as well as the railway line to Komsomolsk-on-Amur. This city is the connecting point of the federal highways “Amur” (Chita - Khabarovsk), “Ussuri” (Khabarovsk - Vladivostok), and Khabarovsk - Komsomolsk-on-Amur. Urban transport includes trams, trolleybuses, buses, minibuses, and taxis.

The international airport “Novy” offers regular flights to Moscow, Yekaterinburg, Vladivostok, Yakutsk, Novosibirsk, Irkutsk, Magadan, Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk, Seoul (South Korea), Tokyo (Japan).

The design of the Russian 5,000 rubles banknote features Khabarovsk. On its front side you can see the monument to Muravyov-Amursky (the founder of Khabarovsk and Vladivostok) on the background of the embankment of the Amur River. The Khabarovsk bridge over the Amur is depicted on the back of the banknote. At the time of construction, in 1916, it was one of the longest bridges in the world and was called “The Amur Miracle”.

The fork-shaped cross depicted on the coat of arms of Khabarovsk symbolizes the location of the city at the confluence of the Amur and Ussuri rivers. Fish reminds of the main occupation of the first residents - fishing. The white-breasted bear and the Amur tiger are endemic to the Amur land.

Main Attractions of Khabarovsk

Khabarovsk Regional Museum named after Nikolai Grodekov . The expositions of this museum feature exhibits on the paleontology and geology of the Amur Region, the flora and fauna of the Far East, the fish of the Amur basin, the culture of the indigenous peoples of the Amur region and Russian settlers, the history of the development of the Russian Far East, the events of the Civil War in the Far East (1917-1922). The museum building (1896) is a monument of architecture, culture, and history of federal significance. Shevchenko Street, 11.

Amur (Khabarovsk) Cliff - the most beautiful place in the city located in the center of Admiral Gennady Nevelsky Embankment running along the Amur River bank, near the Khabarovsk Regional Museum. In 1858, a military detachment led by commander Yakov Dyachenko landed here. He decided to set up his camp here, which later became a military settlement, and even later - the village of Khabarovka.

Here you can find a good observation deck with beautiful views of the Amur River and the city. Nearby, there is a park with the famous monument to the Governor-General of Eastern Siberia Muravyov-Amursky. This monument is depicted on the Russian banknote of 5,000 rubles. Shevchenko Street, 15.

The Far Eastern Art Museum - the largest museum of fine art in the Russian Far East. The collection of this museum has about 16 thousand works of art of the Old Russian, Russian pre-revolutionary, Soviet, and modern periods. Here you can also see the Far Eastern and Western European fine art, the art of the peoples of the Amur Region, works of Russian icon painting of the 15th-20th centuries. Shevchenko Street, 7.

Sobornaya (Komsomolskaya) Square.

Khabarovsk Bridge (“The Amur Miracle”) - one of the main symbols of Khabarovsk. The construction of this bridge completed the Trans-Siberian Railway in 1916. This bridge is depicted on the Russian 5,000 Rubles banknote. In the 1990s, the bridge was reconstructed, its old openwork spans were dismantled. Nearby, you can find the Museum of the History of the Amur Bridge with the last preserved span of the original design.

Lenin Square - the central and most picturesque square in Khabarovsk. In size, it is second only to Red Square in Moscow. It is framed by buildings of various styles of architecture, size, and number of storeys. There are beautiful fountains, well-groomed flower beds, and trimmed lawns here.

Severny Park - a cascade of three small but very picturesque ponds. In the middle of the green lawns and trees there are small arbors, as well as a snow-white wedding palace. Nearby, you can see the Church of Seraphim of Sarov. Kakhovskaya Street, 1.

The questions of our visitors

The comments of our visitors.

I lived in Khabarovsk for many years. I was an American working there. I spoke fluent Russian and pretty much blended right in. No one guessed I was a foreigner. I made lots of truly wonderful friends some of whom became like family.

I walked about any time I felt like it and never had any sort of problems. I lived in several other cities, including Moscow and St. Petersburg and Khabarovsk is my favorite. If I could figure out a way to live there permanently, I would with pleasure.

I had the pleasure of flying a number of flights to Khabarovsk in the early 1990's. I met some wonderful people, one very special person. While the city was in a semi state of disrepair, it still held the historic beauty of its earlier years.

It has been over 20 years since my visit and I would very much like to return. Perhaps not in this life time but the memories live on.
