Heesen Launches ‘Reliance’

Heesen Yachts in the Netherlands has launched the 180-foot Reliance , formerly known as Project Gemini. Construction is on pace for a delivery this fall to the owners.

Reliance is a yacht that Heesen began building on spec. The owner, introduced by Arcon Yachts Monaco, joined the project 15 months into construction. There was still enough time at that point to make changes, including adding an opening window in the master stateroom and creating a new layout for the master bathroom, as well as adding windows in the transom door to allow natural light into the beach club.

The owners chose a shark-gray paint scheme for the Frank Laupman exterior. Resilience is the first yacht that Heesen has collaborated with Luca Dini Design and Architecture for interiors.

Accommodations are for 12 guests in six staterooms, including a main-deck master and a bridge-deck VIP.

Will Reliance be available for charter? Yes. After the yacht is delivered this fall, it is expected to join the Arcon Yachts charter fleet.

At 55 metres with an enclosed volume of 760 GT, Reliacen offers proven efficiency combined with sophisticated style and the renowned FDHF hull form to ensure performance, power and supreme comfort in all sea conditions. Thanks to two MTU 8V 4000 M63 IMO Tier-III diesel engines combined with her ultra-efficient Fast Displacement steel hull, Reliance reaches a top speed of 15.5 knots and have a transatlantic range of 4,500 nautical miles at 13 knots.

Designed by Luca Dini Design and Architecture, the interior features a geometric linear design with warm Tay wood, natural stone, and marine leather elements, creating a Zen atmosphere. The yacht accommodates twelve guests in six staterooms, including an 83-square-meter Owner's apartment. The main saloon impresses with bronze-mirrored ceiling panels and a spacious layout, while the full-beam sky lounge offers panoramic views. Amenities include walk-in wardrobes, a freestanding black bathtub, and a wellness area in the beach club for ultimate relaxation.

New-build 55m Heesen motor yacht Reliance joins the market

The new-build 55 metre Heesen motor yacht Reliance , previously known as Project Gemini , has been listed for sale by Geoff Moore from West Nautical , pending her delivery at the end of 2022.

Built with a steel fast displacement hull and aluminium superstructure, Reliance is one of six yachts in the 55 Steel series. Her naval architecture was penned by Van Oossanen Naval Architects and her exterior design is by Omega Architects . Her interior design was by Italian designer Luca Dini in his debut collaboration with the Dutch shipyard.

The yacht accommodates 12 guests in six spacious cabins, with an 82-square-metre owners' apartment on the main deck forward and the VIP on the bridge deck. The remaining guest cabins – two doubles and two twins – are on the lower deck. All feature en suite bathrooms and entertainment systems. Crew quarters for up to 13 can also be found on board, with the captain's cabin aft of the wheelhouse.

Taupe and cream tones blend with an array of textures to create a warm and elegant theme in the interior living spaces. The main saloon features a formal dining space for 12 and expansive lounging areas. Doors are upholstered in Italian leather and the ceilings are wrapped in cream fabric.

Guests can enjoy the multiple al fresco dining spaces and lounging areas. The yacht's spacious sundeck has a  Jacuzzi, sun loungers, alfresco dining and a bar with teppanyaki grill. While the beach club hosts a swimming platform and wellness centre with gym and sauna.

Reliance began the build process on speculation. Her sisterships include 55 metre Vida , Laurentia and Project Serena .

Power will come from twin MTU 8V 4000 M63 IMO-Tier III diesel engines for a top speed of 15.5 knots and a transatlantic range of 4,500 miles at 13 knots.

Reliance is asking €54,000,000.

Superyacht RELIANCE (ex PROJECT GEMINI, YN19755) is a 50M Steel Class model from Dutch shipyard Heesen and features the exterior styling of Frank Laupman of Omega Architects. The interiors are from Luca Dini Design & Architecture in their first collaboration with Heesen, and the styling uses Tay wood, natural stone, marine leather for the wall panelling and doors, and fabric for the ceiling. The accommodation sleeps up to 12 guests in six en-suite cabins, and construction is scheduled for completion in autumn 2022.

The main deck aft comes with a C-shaped sofa, two drinks tables and movable chairs to make a comfortable place to rest in the shade. Two stairways lead down to the lower deck swim platform for easy access to the water, and for sunbathing beside the beach club.

The bridge deck aft has a formal dining area to seat all guests, and sofas and drinks tables along the stern make a comfortable place to rest for an aperitif at sundown. The foredeck is accessed via stairways from the main deck, and a C-shaped sofa and casual dining table await guests in front of the helm station. The bow section is used for storing the tender and motorised water toys, which are launched and retrieved using a Davit crane.

Up on the sundeck, the forward section has a large Jacuzzi surrounded by sunbeds. The amidships section is shaded by the hardtop and comes with a bar, an alfresco dining table to serve 12, a comfortable sofa to starboard and sun loungers along the stern.

On the lower deck, the crew accommodation, mess and laundry facilities are forward followed by the guest accommodation, then the engine room aft of amidships and the beach club and wellness centre in the stern. The wellness facilities are placed along the port side with a day head to starboard and a chaise-lounger, two armchairs and a coffee table creating a casual place to relax in the shade close to the sea.

The main deck places the Master suite forward with the galley and service stairway to port and the main foyer, day head and guest stairway to starboard. The formal dining area is immediately behind and seats all 12 guests around a grand table, and the main salon places a corner sofa, two armchairs and a coffee table to port and a widescreen TV opposite.

RELIANCE Specifications

The bridge deck layout places the helm controls forward with the VIP stateroom behind to starboard and the Captain's cabin behind to port along with the galley. The central stairway is between the galley and the starboard day head, and the aft skylounge has a forward wet bar, a TV, two armchairs and a coffee table to port and an elongated sofa/daybed and coffee table to starboard.

Yacht Accommodation

The accommodation sleeps a maximum of 12 guests over 6 en-suite cabins: 1 Master suite, 1 VIP stateroom, 2 double cabins and 2 twin cabins. ~ The Master suite is placed on the main deck forward and has a king-sized bed with a widescreen TV opposite, a desk and chaise-lounger to port and a desk/chaise-lounger to starboard along with two armchairs and a side table. ~ The VIP stateroom is situated on the bridge deck to starboard behind the helm station, and comes furnished with a queen-sized bed with a widescreen TV opposite, a wardrobe and a forward en-suite bathroom with a sink, toilet and shower. ~ The double cabins and twin cabins are placed on the lower deck. The double cabins are to port and starboard amidships and both have a double bed with a desk/vanity and widescreen TV on the wall opposite, large wardrobes and an aft en-suite bathroom with two sinks, a toilet and shower. ~ The twin cabins are to port and starboard forward of the double cabins, and both have two single beds, an armchair and side table, a desk/vanity and widescreen TV plus plenty of storage space. The en-suite bathroom has two sinks, a toilet and shower.

Insiders still have no idea what's going to happen to Russian oligarchs' seized superyachts

• It's been two years since Russia invaded Ukraine, leading to sanctions against Russian oligarchs.
• Many of their superyachts were seized or frozen , leading industry insiders to question their fate.
• The yachts, some of which are worth hundreds of millions of dollars, remain in a state of limbo.

More than two years after Russia invaded Ukraine, the boating world still doesn't have many answers about what's going on with the very large, expensive elephants in the sea: oligarchs' superyachts .

The war prompted many governments to enact sanctions against Russia's richest , including seizing their superyachts worth hundreds of millions of dollars. But it's unclear whether they can be sold or who'd buy them, leaving ports peppered with massive boats stuck in a floating limbo.

"The Russian problem, it's becoming a bigger and bigger and bigger problem," one luxury yacht broker told Business Insider at the Palm Beach International Boat Show last week. Like many others, he requested not to be named, given the sensitive nature of the matter at hand and the generally discreet nature of the industry.

Russia has been a massive player in the massive boat market for a long time. In August 2021 — about six months before Russia's Ukraine invasion — Russians owned the second-largest share of yachts over 40 meters in length, according to a report from the industry publication SuperYacht Times.

They were responsible for 16% of new build superyacht purchases in the decade preceding the report and are known for splashing out on extravagant interiors and unique features. (One builder BI spoke to recalled a mandate from an oligarch for a large safe in the owner's cabin in which he could keep his rifles. The builder later learned he'd use them to skeet shoot on deck.)

But those sales have now screeched to a halt as oligarchs get hit by international sanctions. At least a dozen superyachts — worth well over $1 billion combined — have been affected.

And no one is quite sure what will happen to them.

Russia's sanctioned superyachts are hard to buy and sell

The first problem is that many of the yachts are "frozen" — not seized. That means that although the Russian owners can't operate or collect them, they don't technically belong to an overseas government, so they can't be sold without special permission.

Earlier this month, federal prosecutors petitioned a judge asking for consent to sell the Amadea, the 106-meter superyacht that has been docked in San Diego and costs the US as much as $922,000 a month to maintain.

"I've had some inquiries, but all you can tell them is we don't know the outcome yet" of the case, another superyacht broker told BI at the yacht show.

And despite the broker's claim of interest in yachts like Amadea , most ultrarich — or at least their brokers — don't want to go near the vessels with a ten-foot pole, even if the government does get legal permission to sell them.

"How does it look if you bought a Russian boat?" Julia Simpson, a broker at Thompson of Monaco, said. "Even if it's completely legal and normal, there are too many things on the line," she said, like how the original owner got their money and whether that could make the new buyer look bad.

There are also possible legal implications, as it's hard for the government to prove who actually owns the yachts.

"Oligarchs typically structure their ownership of these high-value assets through a web of offshore shell companies and trusts that is designed to conceal the true owner," Joshua Naftalis, a former federal prosecutor who now works for Pallas Partners, told BI.

And if the government does assume ownership, it's highly dependent on court orders. For example, a Russian whose yacht had been seized by the French government regained access to his boat after winning a legal battle in 2022.

"It's a very difficult process to buy them," Ralph Dazert, the head of intelligence at SuperYacht Times, told BI. "There is a high risk of the former (Russian) owner suing you to get the boat back."

He pointed to the Alfa Nero, the 82-meter yacht that Eric Schmidt planned to purchase for $67 million last year in an auction put on by Antigua and Barbuda. He backed out after various parties tried to block the sale, likely deeming it not worth the legal headache.

"When the reason for sanctioning goes away, which it may do," the Russian owners will try to get their boats back , Simpson said. After all, "the government's not going to pay them."'

That said, if sanctions are dropped, the yachts will be worth much less than when they were seized, as a boat not in use deteriorates much faster than one sailing the seas.

"Those yachts need to be used to be kept in shape, kept in condition," the second broker said. "​​Just having them sit at the dock with a temporary crew on board is not good for the boats."

And the sanctioned Russians who have managed to maintain control of their superyachts won't have an easy time offloading them in the future.

Americans who try to do business with sanctioned oligarchs would have a number of hoops to jump through — like finding a bank to process the purchase, which would be next to impossible. If somehow they did and the government caught wind, they'd face hefty penalties and the transaction would be void.

So Russia's richest have found themselves "stuck" sailing in a select few countries that will let them, like the Maldives, Montenegro, and Dubai.

Marsa showcases a sleek exterior from the drawing board of British designer Tim Heywood. The owner opted for a distinctive two-tone paint job, with the hull, curves, and arches finished in Whisper Gray and the windbreakers decked out in dark gray.

Penned by U.K. firm Winch Design, the elegant interiors were designed with long expeditions in mind. (The owner intends to spend extended periods at sea, exploring the Mediterranean and beyond.) The sprawling living quarters, which can be navigated via a four-deck elevator, include cabins for up to 12 guests and space for lounging, entertaining, and working. The owner also decided to add a balcony to the main deck and an outdoor bar to every level because alfresco cocktails are always welcome after the nine-to-five slog.

As for cruising, Marsa is equipped with a hybrid diesel-electric propulsion system that enables her to travel some 4,500 nautical miles at 15.5 knots. In other words, the yacht could travel from Amsterdam in the Netherlands to the U.S. (4,042 nautical miles) with no problems. She’ll release fewer emissions than a traditional gas-powered vessel, too.

“For me, again I say this is the most beautiful yacht we’ve made, but I seem to say that with every delivery,” Oomkens added.

Marsa will now embark upon her maiden voyage, following a private itinerary created by her owner.

'East Bay Pirates' Suspects Arrested After A Year Of Terrorizing Houseboat And Yacht Owners

I f you’ve ever wondered what would happen if you mixed pirates with the Wet Bandits from “Home Alone,” we now have your answer. Police arrested three alleged seafaring burglars last week accused of robbing residents and businesses in the San Francisco Bay .

Surveillance video of a March 13 break-in at a business on San Francisco’s historic water front allowed police to pull a search warrant of small boats in the area, which led them to locating stolen property, the New York Post reports.

This is apparently a big moment for residents living on houseboats and yachts on the 800-foot-wide waterway. Over the past year, they’ve been dealing with theft and physical confrontations from the “East Bay Pirates.”Starting during the summer of 2023, these guys used small boats to raid larger ships and steal valuables onboard. Boat owners would fight back, chasing the pirates across the San Francisco Bay.

This all happened on the Oakland-Alameda Estuary, which separates the two cities. It includes multiple marinas with about 3,000 boat slips , and many of those slips are used as permanent houseboats and yachts.

Here’s how this all started, according to the New York Post :

Last summer and fall, maritime burglars used small, stolen, or discarded boats to ransack large vessels and steal anything they could get their hands on. Then they would either sink the ships or dump whatever was left of the boats miles away in Oakland Harbor or along its shorelines.

Some residents from the area shared their personal experiences of the situation in a number of municipal meetings last year, including the San Francisco Bay Conservation and Development Commission’s (BCDC) enforcement meeting, from The Post :

“The open shoreline of the (Oakland-Alameda) estuary is littered with sunken wrecks and derelict, end-of-life vessels, and crime has risen to truly intolerable levels,” former harbormaster Brock de Lappe said during an October BCDC meeting. “Multiple vessels have been stolen and ransacked. Victims have had to resort to personally confronting the criminals to recover their property without the benefit of police support. Is this an appropriate activity for a 79-year-old senior?” One woman said she rescued a man whose sailboat drifted into the bay without a motor or any way to get back to shore after one of the “pirates” cut his boat line during an argument. Other residents told Fox News Digital they chased would-be thieves across the bay, and they shared videos of the chase and surveillance footage. Dan Hill, who was one of the leaders in the area to bring the issue to the forefront, was one of dozens or more pounding the tables at municipal meetings, writing letters, and calling officials to address the problem. Each “attack” and theft can cost the owner thousands to tens of thousands of dollars, Hill told Fox News Digital in a previous interview. Over the weekend, he said the situation appeared to have been “cleaned up pretty good” and praised the arrests.

This issue has not been an easy one to solve. For months, there have been jurisdictional issues and lower law enforcement staffing levels. It didn’t really get solved until the Oakland and Alameda police departments, along with the Coast Guard , teamed up. Police officials told the outlet it’s a “regional approach” to protect the waterway.

Still, while these guys may be behind bars, that doesn’t mean the problem is solved altogether. Oakland police tell the Post that the case is ongoing and thefts in and around the estuary are still under investigation.

Sea trials commence for Heesen's 55M Steel Superyacht IRIS BLUE

IRIS BLUE, the latest 55m (180.5ft) Heesen superyacht , has been observed embarking on her sea trials in the North Sea. Designed for waterfront living with a beach club and seamless access to the sea, she is scheduled for delivery later this year.

Formerly known as Project Apollo, motor yacht IRIS BLUE  showcases the "evolutionary" design inherited from the preceding Heesen 55M Steel Class . Although she stands as the inaugural superyacht in the series to feature the revamped exterior lines.

Maintaining the Fast Displacement Hull Form (FDHF) crafted by Van Oossanen Naval Architects, complemented by exterior design courtesy of Omega Architects and interior design meticulously crafted by Luca Dini Design & Architecture.

Providing all guests with incredible sweeping views of destinations like Ibiza and Croatia , the sundeck is the crowning glory on board the motor yacht with a wrap-around bar, complemented by a whirlpool Jacuzzi. The atrium showcases a modern design, with wider staircases that facilitate seamless crew movement from the sun lounge to the sundeck.

The main salon boasts floor-to-ceiling windows with few mullions, creating an assertive aesthetic, and idyllic viewpoints for making the most of the Mediterranean scenery. This effect is accentuated by the continuous tinted windows that extend the entire optical length of the yacht.

Offering comfortable accommodation for up to 12 guests in a six-cabin layout, motor yacht IRIS BLUE features a spacious owner's suite on the upper deck with a French balcony.
