130+ superyachts flock to St Barths for New Year's celebrations

St Barths might be one of the smallest islands in the Caribbean chain, but each year the finest vessels in the superyacht fleet make the pilgrimage to the petite island in time to ring in the new year.

According to data provided by BOATPro's Global Fleet Tracker , there are 131 yachts more than 24 metres in length currently anchored off the leeward shores of St Barths, four of which surpass the 100-metre mark. While the total figure falls slightly short of the 142 visiting yachts recorded in 2019, it marks the triumphant return of the fleet following several years of disruption. Take a look at some of the most impressive vessels at anchor...

1. Rising Sun

Length: 138m

At 138 metres in length, the Lürssen -built Rising Sun should be easy to spot from Gustavia, if not for her sheer size then for her distinct glass panels that run the length of the two upper decks. She was commissioned by tech mogul Larry Ellison and was the last ever design of Jon Bannenberg .

2. Infinity

Length: 117m

Not only is Infinity the second largest yacht in St Barths for New Year's Eve, but she is also one of the newest. Upon delivery in May 2022, she was both the largest launch by shipyard Oceanco and the largest yacht to be built in the Netherlands. Although her reign was shortlived as she has since been supplanted by Project Y721 (thought to be named Koru ). Her design team includes Espen Øino , Lateral Naval Architects , Sinot Yacht Architecture & Design and David Kleinberg Design Associates .

Length: 110m

Kaos , or Jubilee as she was first introduced to the world, was the flagship of the Oceanco fleet when she was delivered in 2017. Despite her size, she flaunts a slender profile thanks to the design talents of Igor Lobanov who created "fake decks" and smoked glass to mask her true height. Her iconic profile still remains following a year-long refit after changing hands in 2020, in one of the largest brokerage deals secured in recent years.

4. Bravo Eugenia

Length: 109m

Bravo Eugenia has the proportions of a sports yacht with an elongated bow and slender form. Her design is the work of studio Nuvolari Lenard and she is powered by a hybrid engine with a waste heat recovery system and single-tier engine room. This layout helps free up valuable space for two helipads, a wellness centre, and a large tender garage beneath the foredeck.

5. Moonrise

Length : 100m

Feadship's 100 metre Moonrise returns to the French Caribbean island for the second year in a row to watch the fireworks on New Year's Eve. Her clean lines and minimal exterior saw Moonrise win a World Superyacht Award in 2021 in the Displacement Motor Yachts 3,000GT and Above category, although her interior remains a well-kept secret.

6. Christina O

Length : 99m

Christina O is a familiar sight anchored off of Gustavia in the run-up to the new year. She started as a Canadian anti-submarine frigate but was famously rescued and rebuilt by Greek shipping magnate Aristotle Onassis after the Second World War, who bought her for her scrap value of $34,000. Today she is the ultimate party vessel with a starry past, with the likes of Marilyn Monroe, Frank Sinatra, Elizabeth Taylor, Greta Garbo and Grace Kelley having all graced her decks.

Length: 96.6m

Faith is one of the biggest Feadship launches to date and has been spotted in St Barths following a recent refit. Her list of amenities include a nine-metre glass-bottomed swimming pool, a sundeck gym and two 10-metre custom tenders to whisk guests to shore. Alternatively, nights spent on board are best spent on the sundeck, where guests will find a wood-fired pizza oven and wine cellar. Owners can also retreat to a private deck for aperitifs around a firepit.

Vava II was the largest yacht to be built in the UK when she was completed at the beginning of 2012 and the last yacht built by Devonport Yachts, following its acquisition by Pendennis Shipyard. Her exterior design was by British studio RWD , while the interior contract was awarded to Remi Tessier .

Length: 95.2m

The 95.2 metre Lürssen Kismet was commissioned by owner Shahid Khan, who was looking to upgrade his 68 metre yacht by the same name. She is easy to pick out among the crowd thanks to her two-tone "champagne and caviar" exterior, twin helipads and distinctive bowsprit. Inside is just as flash, dressed in exotic materials such as black marble, solid honey onyx, and rare mahogany timber with glimmers of gold. A dramatic, curved staircase with curled wrought ironwork sits at the centre of the yacht, with a two-storey video wall acting as a moving backdrop.

10. Madsummer

Length: 95m

Lürssen's Madsummer was commissioned by an owner in the market for a new plane, as well as a boat. As a result, the sundeck was reinforced to serve as a seaplane berth with a crane hidden in the bulwark. Other highlights of this 95 metre include a helideck on the foredeck, a brightly coloured interior by Laura Sessa, a spa and a 12 metre swimming pool.

Other favourites spotted sitting off of St Barths include Project X and Nebula , which are spending their first New Year's on the island after delivery in 2022, as well as the newly refitted Force Blue and Coral Ocean .

The port of Gustavia in St. Barths is getting crowded this holiday season as the legendary superyacht showdown begins. The season started early, with the wealthiest men in the world and their celebrity friends (Jennifer Lopez, Heidi Klum) anchored outside of Gustavia and neighboring St. Maarten and Antigua. Many will stay through Christmas, taking glamorous day trips to nearby islands, and then party with the traditional fireworks show above St. Barths Fort Oscar on New Year's Eve.

Jonny Dodge, CEO and Founder of My Ocean , handling superyacht sales, charters and management, says, "More billionaires congregate on this tiny rock in the Caribbean than anywhere else in the world at once. Last year, we went to the UNICEF Gala with clients at a $300,000 table, followed by an after-party on the billionaire owner of superyacht VAVA II . There are more celebrities than you can count in St. Barths, and it's really like they picked up St Tropez and transported to the Caribbean."

New this year, Bagatelle Group opened their second St. Barts location, iTA , a disco-jungle themed restaurant and bar located in Gustavia overlooking the harbor, and the famed Le Ti cabaret club, open since 1995, was recently purchased and reopened under new ownership.

Superyachts in the area for the holidays will send their guests in via tender to numerous exclusive parties and host their own private celebrations on board. Among the high-profile New Year's Eve events this year, Gala One from AAB Productions threw one of the most exclusive parties on the island prior to New Years Eve at the famed Eden Rock. With performances by Bebe Rexha and Saweetie, as well as a thrilling live auction, the evening benefitted several charities dedicated to protecting children, biodiversity and the waters and lands of the Caribbean.

• All guests MUST be age 21 and up and present a valid form of government-issued photo ID in order to attend and consume alcohol at this event.
• We urge everyone to be cognizant of the heavy traffic in Manhattan on New Year’s Eve night. Party goers from around the country and the world gather every year to enjoy the city’s attractions. Please allow ample time to arrive at Skyport Marina and locate the Avalon Yacht.
• Open Bar will begin once the Avalon Yacht has left the dock.
• No outside food or beverages are allowed on board.
• The Food Menu is subject to change at the discretion of the vessel/event staff. As conditions change on the night of the event, the vessel/event staff reserves the right to make any necessary changes. Food is not unlimited servings. One buffet dinner ticket will be distributed to each guest upon entry.
• Views of the fireworks may vary on the vessel and exact time of the fireworks display is yet to be determined. Fireworks display provided at the discretion of local authorities (weather permitting)
• All cruise sights, destinations, and itineraries are subject to change without notice as determined by US Coast Guard, NYPD, or event staff (Unforeseen restrictions may be enforced the night of the event)
• Seating: No guaranteed seating. Seats are available on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Superyachts descend on St Barts for New Year’s Eve festivities

Once again proving the hottest ticket in town, superyachts have been flocking to the picturesque harbor of Gustavia on the Caribbean island of St Barts to ring in 2022. Promising an epic night of New Year’s Eve parties, celebrities from Jeff Bezos to Dua Lipa have already been spotted doing the rounds on the iconic French isle.

One of the most exciting events on the superyacht social calendar, St Barts ’ New Year’s Eve celebrations are world-renowned and wouldn’t be complete without the superyachts on show. We bring you our top picks from the current charter fleet on the scene.

Not allowing the pandemic to dampen the party spirit, yacht owners along with A-list guests and other familiar faces have all arrived in good time to soak up the signature atmosphere in the countdown to midnight, whether that’s on board their gleaming yachts, on the myriad powder-fine beaches or in one of the many lively bars and restaurants this idyllic island has to offer.

Celebrities were out in force at the LuisaViaRoma's UNICEF benefit held at Eden Rock in the beautiful sunkissed Baie de St Jean, which also plays host to the celebrated Nikki Beach resort. Singer/songwriter Dua Lipa was the main attraction at the event, performing a medley of her songs to a star-studded crowd.

Superyachts on show

With only a few large berths available in Gustavia Harbor itself, most yachts are content to anchor out in the surrounding turquoise waters where guests can enjoy the luxury amenities available on their yacht, with trained and attentive crew catering to their every whim. 

Having secured one of the coveted marina slips, the 60m (197ft) yacht DREAM is sure to garner plenty of stares as visitors take in the designer shops, bars and restaurants that line the port. 

Undoubtedly generating plenty of excitement at the mouth of the port, the iconic 80m (262ft) superyacht EXCELLENCE showcases her radical reverse bow profile. More spaceship than superyacht, she has been spotted at these New Year’s celebrations regularly since her launch in 2015.

Anchored further out, and representing the largest charter yacht attending this year’s celebrations, lies the resplendent 95m (312ft) Lurssen yacht KISMET , renowned for her “Champagne and Caviar” Art Deco interiors and prowling jaguar on her bow sprite in a nod to her Owner’s basketball team.

Newly-launched superyachts TRIUMPH and RESILIENCE are also making an appearance on this tiny Caribbean island, offering visitors tantalizing glimpses of their luxurious amenities and state-of-the-art features.

Playing host to the very best of the yachting scene, the turquoise waters also feature a vast number of additional standout charter yachts, including the impressive 74m yacht LADY JORGIA and the ever-popular 73m charter yacht AXIOMA .

There are also star turns from superyachts W , MOSKITO , HOME and EIV , to name but a few of the incredible selection from this year’s line up, where Owners are clearly taking advantage of a much-needed respite from the pandemic on board their yachts.

Being anchored outside of Port de Gustavia, guests on board these superyachts can choose to enjoy a private party or can just as easily deploy tenders to allow those on board to soak up the celebrations taking place on the island.

Festivities typically begin after a just-for-fun regatta which takes place later this afternoon. Parties will be hosted on board superyachts as well as on shore, and fireworks will light up the sky above the harbor as the clock strikes midnight.

Two teenage girls killed in jet ski-boat collision at Illinois lake, police say

Two teenage girls died after they were thrown from their jet ski following a collision with a boat on Lake Marie in northern Illinois on Tuesday, authorities said.

The Lake County Sheriff’s Marine Unit and Patrol Division responded to a collision involving a boat and a jet ski, about 60 miles north of Chicago, around 5:15 p.m. on June 18, the Lake County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement .

A 16-year-old girl from Lake Forest, California, was driving the jet ski, and a 13-year-old girl from Long Grove, Illinois, was a passenger, according to a preliminary investigation by the sheriff's office.

Witnesses reported the jet ski traveling at a high rate of speed as it approached a Sea Ray Cabin Cruiser, operated by a 55-year-old man. The jet ski was heading directly toward the Sea Ray, witnesses told the sheriff's office.

"The operator of the Sea Ray was unable to avoid a collision, and the two watercrafts struck each other," the sheriff's office said. "Both occupants of the jet ski, who were wearing life vests, were knocked unconscious and thrown into the water."

The four people aboard the Sea Ray "immediately pulled the girls from the water," and called 911 as they rendered aid, according to the sheriff's office.

One of the girls was taken to shore on the Sea Ray, and the other girl was transported by another passing boat.

The two girls were taken to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville, Illinois, and were both pronounced dead after their arrival, the sheriff's office said.

The Lake County Coroner’s Office scheduled autopsies for Thursday morning, according to the sheriff's office.

"The Lake County Sheriff’s Office extends its condolences to the families of the girls and others involved in this tragic boat crash," the statement read.

No other injuries were reported as a result of the collision. The crash remained under investigation by the Lake County Sheriff’s Office Marine Unit and Illinois Conservation Police, the sheriff's office said.

Two teen girls, ages 16 and 13, were killed at a lake in Illinois on Tuesday after their jet ski crashed into a boat, authorities said.

The 16-year-old girl was operating a Yamaha jet ski while the 13-year-old rode as a passenger when the crash occurred at around 5:15 p.m. on Lake Marie in Antioch, the Lake County Sheriff’s Office said. 

Witnesses told the sheriff’s office that the teens were traveling at a high rate of speed near the channel to Grass Lake directly toward a Sea Ray Cabin Cruiser, which was also approaching the channel.

The two watercraft, however, were unable to avoid a collision.

“It doesn’t appear they avoided or tried to make any sharp maneuvers,” Lake County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Chief Chris Covelli told  FOX32 Chicago.  “It appears they went straight into the cabin cruiser. Just seems to be a tragic, unfortunate accident.”

The teens on the jet ski, who were both wearing life vests, were knocked unconscious and thrown into the water, according to authorities.

The four occupants on the Sea Ray immediately pulled the girls from the water, called 911 and rendered aid.

One of the girls was transported to the shore by the operator of the Sea Ray, while the other girl was taken ashore by the operator of another passing boat.

Both girls were then rushed to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville, where they were each pronounced dead.

No other injuries were reported.

The teens were identified as a 16-year-old girl from Lakewood, California, and a 13-year-old girl from Long Grove, Illinois.

Authorities have yet to release their names.

The Lake County Coroner’s Office is expected to perform an autopsy Thursday morning. 

The crash remains under investigation.

The actor — whose marriage to Jennifer Lopez appears to be hanging by a thread — was photographed riding his motorcycle Wednesday in Los Angeles with his youngest child, Samuel, sitting behind him.

Affleck, 51, wore a navy blue T-shirt with jeans and white Nike sneakers, while his 12-year-old son donned a gray tee, bright blue joggers and gray tennis shoes.

The father-son duo made sure to sport helmets.

Meanwhile, Lopez is enjoying an Italian vacation — seemingly all to herself.

The singer, 54, was spotted on a boat with friends in Positano, also on Wednesday, rocking a yellow bandeau top beneath an open button-down, which she paired with matching shorts.

Though Lopez  gave her “hero,” Affleck, a shout-out in honor of Father’s Day this past weekend, the couple are reportedly selling the $60 million Beverly Hills mansion they bought just last May.

“Jenny has had enough, and she really tried, but she can do no more ,” an insider told the Daily Mail earlier this week, claiming that the pair’s marriage is “not getting any better; it’s worse.”

The songstress is now apparently “trying to make the best” of her time by focusing on her twins, Max and Emme, 16, and her career goals for 2025.

Part of those plans reportedly includes reviving her recently canceled “This Is Me… Live” tour .

“She is excited about going on tour next year when her personal life is on calmer ground and she can connect with her fans,” the insider shared. “She will take her tribe with her and make the most of it.”

Another informant close to the actress admitted that Affleck “can be grumpy and a downer” but made sure to note he’s “a wonderful father.”

Last week, a source told “Entertainment Tonight” that the duo have “been living separate lives” but are “not officially separated yet.”

“At this point, they are just doing their own thing,” the source explained. “They went into their relationship very optimistic and thought things could change, but they haven’t.”

The director reportedly  began staying in a home in Brentwood  in mid-May, and Lopez has apparently been “touring houses and shopping around for her own home.”

“Ben is sad about it all but focused on his work, being a great dad and co-parenting well with Jennifer Garner,” the source said.

Affleck shares Samuel, Violet, 18, and Seraphina, 15, with Garner, 52, while Lopez co-parents her twins with her ex-husband Marc Anthony, 55.

An insider previously told Page Six that Affleck — who has been seen numerous times in recent weeks without his wedding ring — had “come to his senses” about his two-year “fever dream” marriage to Lopez.

“If there was a way to divorce on grounds of temporary insanity, he would,” our insider insisted.

The stars, who  called off their engagement  in 2004 before reconciling in 2021, married in Las Vegas in July 2022.

Australia's first long-range Triton maritime surveillance drone set to arrive amid concerns over boat arrivals

The first of at least four new large, unmanned surveillance aircraft ordered from the United States is due to arrive in the Northern Territory late on Saturday where it will soon play a key role in monitoring unauthorised maritime arrivals to the north.

Following months of test flights, the Northrop Grumman MQ-4C Triton — dubbed AUS 1 — flew out of a Californian Naval Air Station on Thursday on a flight via Wake Island before heading to its new home at Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) Base Tindal.

Roughly the size of a 737 aircraft, the Triton drones will eventually be piloted remotely by the RAAF from the Edinburgh Air Base outside Adelaide to assist the Australian Border Force with maritime patrols as well as other military surveillance roles.

Last year Defence Industry Minister Pat Conroy confirmed the purchase of Australia's fourth MQ-4C Triton as part of a $1.5 billion boost to RAAF capability, despite the US Navy recently halting production of the expensive unmanned platform.

On Friday radar tracking data confirmed "AUS 1" — flying under the call sign "SCORE47" — had departed from the Point Mugu Naval Air Station and was headed across the Pacific on its delivery flight to Australia.

The long-range surveillance drone's scheduled arrival late on Saturday night comes as authorities grapple with a number of recent unauthorised boat arrivals that have made it into Australian waters , and even the mainland, undetected.

Critics of the Triton say the aircraft, which operates at an altitude upwards of 50,000 feet, is particularly vulnerable to enemy attack and not capable of monitoring small wooden people-smuggling vessels, a claim hotly disputed by backers of the program.

The aircraft has the ability to survey tens of thousands of square kilometres in a single 28-hour mission, while providing visual and electronic data back in real time, and will be primarily deployed to monitor Australia's northern maritime approaches.

Australia first expressed interest in acquiring the Triton more than 20 years ago, with the platform based on the RQ-4B Global Hawk flown by the US Air Force, Japan and NATO, but optimised for maritime reconnaissance missions.

Ahead of the arrival of Australia's first MQ-4C, the head of Air Force Capability, Air Vice-Marshal Wendy Blyth, said RAAF pilots and crews had already been busy training on the platform in the United States.

"These personnel received the same training as their USN counterparts and gained valuable experience to ensure that Air Force is able to deploy the MQ-4C Triton effectively," she said.

Pentagon's top AUKUS adviser quits post after two years

The Pentagon's most senior adviser and coordinator for AUKUS has quit his role overseeing the military partnership between Australia, the United Kingdom and United States.

Abraham Denmark, who has been in the position since July 2022, has not disclosed what his next job will be.

He wrote on social media: "While my departure is bittersweet, I am excited for the future of AUKUS."

Speaking at a press briefing, Pentagon spokesperson Sabrina Singh said Mr Denmark had played a key role in helping Australia to eventually acquire nuclear-powered submarines.

"He was a key architect of the AUKUS Pillar One optimal pathway announced by the president and the prime ministers, and instrumental in developing advanced capability cooperation in AUKUS Pillar Two," Ms Singh said.
