Mystic Seaport Museum and Crew to Restore 1885 Schooner Yacht Coronet

Mystic, Conn. (November 8, 2022) – The Henry B. du Pont Preservation Shipyard at Mystic Seaport Museum is preparing to receive a massive restoration project later this month. Coronet, the 1885 Schooner, and what may be considered the last of the Gilded Age yachts will be making its way to Mystic for a three year restoration. The hauling process is proving to be an impressive undertaking in and of itself, as the vessel is currently on dry dock and indoors at IYRS School of Technology and Trades in Newport, Rhode Island, where it has been under restoration since 1995.

yacht coronet

First launched in 1885, Coronet was one of the most elegant sailing yachts of its day. Intended for crossing the ocean in style, the 131-foot schooner was designed by William Townsend and built for Rufus T. Bush by the C. & R. Poillon shipyard in Brooklyn. Bush then put forth a $10,000 challenge (roughly $300,000 in today’s dollars) against any other yacht for a transatlantic race. The ocean race between the Coronet and the yacht Dauntless in March 1887 made Rufus T. Bush and the victorious Coronet famous—the New York Times devoted its entire first page on March 28, 1887 to the story.

Henry B. du Pont Preservation Shipyard, which celebrates its 50th anniversary this year, is uniquely suited to the task. In 2007, a major investment was made to upgrade the Shipyard’s shiplift which allows it to haul vessels up to 450 tons, a capability unmatched by any other facility on eastern seaboard.

Since 1995, Coronet has been under restoration at IYRS, the premier marine trades and modern manufacturing school in the United States. Originally purchased as a student project to provide the hands-on experience in historic wooden vessel restoration the school is known for, the schooner was later sold to a private buyer but remained at IYRS under restoration by a team of shipwrights who included IYRS students and alumni. Coronet has been one of Newport’s favorite maritime attractions during its years at IYRS.

Over the course of the next few weeks,  Coronet  will be moved from dry dock at IYRS and hauled to the Museum in a complex and meticulously planned series of events. Currently underway is the dismantling of the building where  Coronet  resides, allowing a 1000 ton floating crane  to access the vessel.  Coronet  will then be lifted from the former building site to a dock near IYRS. From there it will make the journey from Newport to Mystic on an eight-hour trip that will end through the Mystic Bascule Bridge and up the Mystic River to the shiplift at the south end of the Museum.  Coronet  will reside there until restoration is complete, a process that is expected to take approximately three years.

Coronet  was recently purchased by  Crew , a New York based company run by brothers Alex and Miles Pincus. The purchase and continued restoration efforts of  Coronet  are in line with Crew’s long history of historic vessel restoration. “ Coronet  is without equal. Her restoration is a calling that we feel destined to pursue. ”

The Museum and the team at the Shipyard have worked with Crew over the years to maintain vessels in their existing fleet, most recently, Pilot, a wooden schooner with a nearly 100-year history that now serves as a seasonal oyster bar located at Brooklyn Bridge Park’s Pier 6. “Working with Crew has always been a pleasure, and they understand the historic preservation of their fleet.  We look forward to this exciting project to bring  Coronet  to life,” says Chris Gasiorek, Senior Vice President of Operations and Watercraft at Mystic Seaport Museum.

Visitors to the Museum will be able to view the progress of the restoration as the Shipyard offers a unique opportunity to watch its shipwrights while they work. The restoration team will again include IYRS alumni who are looking forward to bringing  Coronet’s  restoration full circle. Spectators both near and far can also follow along with the restoration on social media at both the  Museum  and  Coronet  Instagram accounts.

*Several factors, including weather, will affect the departure date of Coronet from IYRS and arrival at the Museum. At this time, the anticipated arrival to the Museum is December 1. An exact date will be confirmed in a separate communication closer to that time.

Gilded Age Yacht Coronet Being Moved to Mystic to Complete Restoration

A brief history of the coronet.

Launched in 1885, the Coronet was one of the most elegant sailing yachts of her day featuring a marble staircase, stained glass doors, mahogany paneled staterooms, and a piano in the main salon.  She was also well-known as a successful ocean racer.  Coronet was designed by William Townsend and built for Rufus T. Bush by the C. & R. Poillon shipyard in Brooklyn.

After Rufus Bush’s death in 1890, Coronet passed through six owners before being purchased in 1905 for $10,000 by The Kingdom , a religious organization founded by Frank Sandford .  The Kingdom was an apocalyptic Christian sect and Sanford identified himself with the biblical Elijah and David.

With a crew of thirty, Sandford circumnavigated the globe on Coronet.  The intent was to spread the message of the group and yet, strangely, no one went ashore.  Sandford attempted to “subdue the world for Christ” by prayer and to claim nations for Christ by sounding brass instruments as they passed by the shores.

The voyage of the Coronet ended badly when Sandford listened to divine instruction to keep sailing, even after supplies had run out. Six crew members died of scurvy and Sandford was sent to prison for manslaughter.

After the voyage, The Kingdom kept the yacht moored at Portland, Maine, and owned her until 1995, when she was acquired by the International Yacht Restoration School. Restoration work started in 2010.

Congratulations on landing this work — she will be in the right place, with appropriate tools and machinery, access to beautiful materials and with superb craftsmen to do the job.

She will be a stunner when complete and the public will be able to watch every step of the way.

Amazing project but curious about the money side if it. How much is the Mystic work going to cost, and who’s paying for it?

"Coronet" : After 27 years of refit, the legendary US schooner from 1885 is afloat again

Jochen Rieker

 ·  07.12.2022

Finally finished - well, half-finished! "Coronet" with newly planked hull in front of the crane

Last Friday, the time had finally come: "Coronet", perhaps the last of the unfinished among the once pioneering classics, touched the water again. After almost three decades on dry land and tens of thousands of hours of boatbuilding finesse, the schooner was lifted into its element by a 1000-tonne floating crane in Newport on the US East Coast.

Most of the deck details, fittings, rigging, sails and the entire interior are still missing. The double-planked hull is only primed above water, not painted black as before. It would therefore be too early to proclaim its completion. But an essential, the most important part of the restoration has now been completed.

The boat, gigantic even by today's superyacht standards, was brought by tugboat to Mystic Seaport, less than 40 miles to the west. The transfer to the Henry B. du Pont Preservation Shipyard - the shipyard that is to complete the project by 2025 - took eight hours. That will be the 140th anniversary of "Coronet's" first launch.

However, one should be careful with forecasts for the future. Deadlines for completion have been set far too often - and then broken. This was already the case in 1995, when the project was announced by Liz Meyer - the same Liz Meyer who helped trigger the boom in large classic refits with the J-Class "Endeavour". And in 2006, when a new investor stepped in.

Back then, YACHT classic flew to the USA especially to document the new start of the extremely complex refit. Regular photographer Nico Krauss captured the status of the preparatory work in impressive pictures. Here is a gallery of the most memorable motifs and text excerpts from the report in YACHT classic 1-2007, which illustrate the dimensions and historical significance of the project:

"Coronet" in its original condition in 2006, before work began on the hull. In its lightweight hangar on Narragansett Bay off Newport, the schooner looks like a beached whale

Excerpts from YACHT classic 1-2007 about the start of the restoration of "Coronet"

The woodwork cracks. Hardly a minute goes by without the acoustic reminder that this was once a very lively organism. But it is not the massive oak frames, similar in size to the planks of a railway track, that make the noise. Nor the planks, nor the keelson, nor the beams, nor the entire, seemingly endless deck measuring an incredible 40 metres. Not a sound comes from them. "Coronet" lies still like a beached whale.

She no longer works. Not for a long time.

What was once one of the proudest schooners of the Victorian era in boat building has been resting here on the waterfront of Narragansett Bay in Newport for 13 years. An epitome of a belief in progress, cosmopolitanism and a desire for representation. Not just some spawn of the American dream - a queen.

Little remains of Coronet's splendour. The colossal hull has developed deep cracks. It no longer stretches, it bulges and sags.

The dryness of his last storage place has left him completely scarred, even more so than the neglect of the many decades he spent in the service of a mission church.

Since "Coronet" was lifted by a travel lift in the fashionable New England coastal town at 10 a.m. on 22 April 1995, it has not touched water for 13 long years. In front of Thames Street, where there used to be a pretty park, a hall has been built for her: hollow like a house of cards, five storeys high, roof and walls made of semi-transparent polyester profiles.

When the sun shines on it, it is the expansion of the plastic that breaks the otherwise tomb-like silence with a loud crack. Sometimes, the sounds of wind and rain also rumble through the modern mausoleum. But "Coronet" itself lies there as if dead.

But it is only a deep sleep. In a few weeks, finally, the 26-year-long attempt to restore her to her former glory at sea under 772 square metres of canvas will begin in earnest.

It is set to be the most complex refit project in recent times, perhaps the largest ever.

Robert McNeil, a venture capitalist from San Francisco who is as wealthy as he is boat-loving, signed an agreement in December last year that guarantees the restoration "to the highest historical standards". Exactly in the style and technology of the late 19th century from which it originated. That's probably how it will turn out. McNeil is a man of principle. "Walk your talk", he says, let your words be followed by deeds.

He has already made a name for himself with other prestigious restorations: with "Joyant", he owns an R-class yacht designed by Herreshoff in top condition. Most recently, a team he put together reconstructed "Cangarda", one of the last remaining steam yachts with a clipper bow in the USA. Ambitious, highly acclaimed work.

And yet there is no comparison with "Coronet". The schooner's size alone makes it an extraordinary project.

Anyone who steps through the door of the warehouse in Newport and sees the enormous bow towering almost vertically in front of them is literally overwhelmed by a feeling of awe.

Built in 1885, this yacht, operated purely for private pleasure, looks like a monument. An oil painting from the early days shows her under full sail, flying lightly over choppy seas, elegant and dynamic. Only in real life, on dry land, do you realise her colossal appearance.

Below deck, the effect is almost more immediate. Workers have removed planks between two frames in the keel area. One of the many wounds inflicted on "Coronet" in order to save her. Bob McNeil's boat builders enter the ship via the gap when they are on site preparing for the refit. The way around to the aft deck, seven metres higher, and then three metres back down the companionway would take much longer.

Inside, the men are greeted by the same damp, musty odour. And a view that hardly anyone will ever get used to: Along the entire length and across the full width of the boat, no bulkhead or frame frame frame limits the perspective. Just space, space, space over 40 by 8.20 metres.

What was once bolted, riveted and mortised there, the entire interior of this gigantic dance hall, is the other reason why "Coronet" is considered "America's most historic yacht", as Susan Daly says. As director of the International Yacht Restoration School, she has tracked and documented the preservation of the substance. She keeps folders full of inventory lists in her office not far from the boat storage area.

It contains photos, measurements and descriptions of thousands (!) of objects that were secured during the gutting of the schooner: from the fold-out porcelain washbasin and football-sized blocks of ash wood to the artistically crafted stained glass windows of the saloon doors.

The quantity of these original fixtures and fittings fills a warehouse of its own. An evidence room of rare treasures. They already make "Coronet" unique.

The white Hulk, once painted black, fits like a key in the lock to the early yacht-building history of the "Gilded Age", the heyday of the US economy after the Civil War. "Perhaps the most remarkable thing about her is that she still exists at all," says Susan Daly.

A large part of the hull restoration can be on this homepage of the IYRS crew, including numerous photos .

The new owners of "Coronet", the founders and partners of "Crew" in New York, have given the boat a new lease of life. a new Internet presence. There you will find historical documents as well as current pictures of the launching and transfer and, in future, of further work in Mystic Seaport.

In the end they did figure something out for the Coronet, enlisting investors and fellow conservators so that last December the boat was transported to the Mystic Seaport Museum for final restoration. After that? “It won’t be a restaurant. It’s too good for that. We’re thinking maybe another race across the Atlantic.”

Welcome to the home page for the classic yacht, Coronet.  Coronet was first launched in 1885, and was one of the most elegant sailing yachts of her day.  She was designed for crossing the ocean in style, and featured a marble staircase, stained glass doors, mahogany paneled staterooms, and a piano in the main salon.

Since 1995, Coronet has been on the campus of the International Yacht Restoration School, awaiting restoration.  Coronet Restoration Partners purchased her in 2006, and restoration has now begun in earnest.

We’ll be following Coronet’s team of shipwrights here as they bring this classic boat back to her former glory.  We’ll cover it all, from harvesting the timber to restoring the original interior.  If you are a builder, a hobbyist, a historian, or just enamored with classic boats, we think you’ll enjoy watching this beautiful vessel come back to life.

If you see this (more…) at the bottom of a post, that means that the post continues on another page.  Just click it and you’ll go to the rest of the post.

Could you please give us a little more info on why the project was paused and if and when it will resume? That way I will not have to continually log into this site and again and again be disappointed in no progress( I have follow this site fron the very beginning and this is discouraging)

Hi Ken, Unfortunately I don’t have info to share on why the project is currently paused. That’s between the owner and project manager. In the meantime, you can create a Google alert that will send you a message when this website is updated, and save you the trouble of continually checking in. In the box where it asks for a topic, enter Coronet1885. That should keep the alerts pretty much focused on just this site. Best, Tom

Hi, I stopped by yesterday to check on progress and was sad to see it at a standstill. But it was as wonderful as ever to explore and I took some photos of all the bits and pieces around (My favorite part). Thought I’d share. Fingers crossed for work to start up again. https://www.dropbox.com/sh/s42tml9skk5hyz7/AADGEMY5yVvv16ojugSSAko-a?dl=0

Thank you for sharing your photos! You’re not alone in hoping that the project gets going soon!

Well, its been a while since I discovered the Coronet’s history on TV. As I recall, I saw the re-launching, which was, as I say, kind of scary; since the Coronet almost capsized! As a visual lover of things old, glorious or beautiful, please keep my email and send me a note when and if the restoration is restored. Must say – despite what the delays’ causes are – that the work done before the stop was really remarkable.

Great news that there is progress! After two years I feared that the project had come to an end. Thanks Tom for keeping us updated.

I’ll be in town next Saturday 23.2.2018, and would love to see the progress of the Coronet will the building be open? Thanks Pat

Anything new in the last 6 months?

Wow, it’s been about a year since the last update, and there was none in 2017. Is restoration still going on? Or, is there no interest? Is there another web site we can go to for more information? This is a great project. and I would to keep up on the progress. thanks

First time on the site. I am a great-great grandson of Richard Poillon of C & R Poillon Shipyard who built the Coronet. His daughter Emma Poillon was my great-grandmother. It is fascinating to see the restoration work being done to the Coronet. I am retiring this summer and my Wife and I hope to visit the ship sometime in our travels. Keep up the great work you are doing. Sincerely, Jack Shiner

It’s been over two years. I presume this is a dead page.

There must be many like me wondering when an update on progress will appear?

I just posted the launch update… at last!!

Thank you so much for visiting Jack! I just posted the launch update… at last!!

Coronet, which has been under restoration at IYRS School of Technology and Trades since 1995, is leaving Newport.

The  Henry B. du Pont Preservation Shipyard  at Mystic Seaport Museum is preparing to receive a massive restoration project later this month, according to a press release today from IYRS.

Coronet, the 1885 schooner, and what may be considered the last of the Gilded Age yachts, will be making her way to Mystic for a three-year restoration. The hauling process is proving to be an impressive undertaking in and of itself, as the vessel is currently on dry dock at IYRS School of Technology and Trades .

First launched in 1885,  Coronet  was one of the most elegant sailing yachts of her day.

IYRS says that the Henry B. du Pont Preservation Shipyard, which celebrates its 50th anniversary this year, is uniquely suited to the task. In 2007, a major investment was made to upgrade the Shipyard’s shiplift which allows it to haul vessels up to 450 tons, a capability unmatched by any other facility on eastern seaboard.

Since 1995,  Coronet  has been under restoration at IYRS School of Technology & Trades, the premier marine trades and modern manufacturing school in the United States. Originally purchased as a student project to provide the hands-on experience in historic wooden vessel restoration the school is known for, the schooner was later sold to a private buyer but remained at IYRS under restoration by a team of shipwrights who included IYRS alumni.  Coronet  has been one of Newport’s favorite maritime attractions during its years at IYRS.

Over the course of the next few weeks,  Coronet  will be moved from dry dock at IYRS and hauled to the Museum in a complex and meticulously planned series of events managed by Mystic, according to IYRS. Currently underway is the dismantling of the building where Coronet resides, allowing a 1000-ton floating crane to access the vessel. Coronet will then be lifted from the former building site to a dock near IYRS. From there it will make the journey from Newport to Mystic on an eight-hour trip that will end through the Mystic Bascule Bridge and up the Mystic River to the ship lift at the south end of the Museum.  Coronet  will reside there until restoration is complete, a process that is expected to take approximately three years.

Coronet  was recently purchased by  Crew , a New York-based company run by brothers Alex and Miles Pincus, according to IYRS. The purchase and continued restoration efforts of  Coronet  are in line with Crew’s notable history of historic vessel restoration. “Coronet is without equal. Her restoration is a calling that we feel destined to pursue,” says Alex Pincus, CEO of Crew.

The Museum and the team at the Shipyard have worked with Crew over the years to maintain vessels in their existing fleet, most recently,  Pilot , a wooden schooner with a nearly 100-year history that now serves as a seasonal oyster bar located at Brooklyn Bridge Park’s Pier 6.

The 131-foot schooner was built for oil tycoon Rufus T. Bush in 1885. It is considered the last of the Gilded Age yachts and is famous for winning a transatlantic race against the yacht Dauntless in March 1887.

It recently was purchased by Crew, a New York-based company. Coronet was towed Monday from IYRS School of Technology and Trades in Newport where it has been under restoration since 1995.

The museum’s Henry B. du Pont Preservation Shipyard has worked with Crew over the years to maintain vessels in its existing fleet, most recently, Pilot, a wooden schooner that now serves as a seasonal oyster bar in Brooklyn, N.Y.

About the author

Robert moss.

Robert Moss is the pioneer of Active Dreaming, an original synthesis of shamanism and modern dreamwork. Born in Australia, he survived three near-death experiences in childhood. He leads popular seminars all over the world, including a three-year training for teachers of Active Dreaming and lively online courses for The Shift Network. A former lecturer in ancient history at the Australian National University, he is a best-selling novelist, journalist and independent scholar.

His many books on dreaming, shamanism and imagination include Conscious Dreaming, Dreamways of the Iroquois, The Three "Only" Things: Tapping the Power of Dreams, Coincidence and Imagination, The Secret History of Dreaming, Dreamgates, Active Dreaming, Dreaming the Soul Back Home, and "The Boy Who Died and Came Back: Adventures of a Dream Archaeologist in the Multiverse." His latest book is "Sidewalk Oracles: Playing with Signs, Symbols and Synchronicity in Everyday Life."

Moss is also the author of Here, Everything Is Dreaming: Poems and Stories (Excelsion Editions, 2013).

Moss describes himself as "a dream teacher, on a path for which there has been no career track in our culture." He identifies the great watershed in his adult life as a sequence of visionary events that unfolded in 1987-1988, after he decided to leave the world of big cities and the fast-track life of a popular novelist (already the author of four New York Times bestsellers, including Moscow Rules) and put down roots on a farm in the upper Hudson Valley of New York. Moss started dreaming in a language he did not know that proved to be an archaic form of the Mohawk language. Helped by native speakers to interpret his dreams, Moss came to believe that they had put him in touch with an ancient healer - a woman of power - and that they were calling him to a different life.

Out of these experiences he wrote a series of historical novels (The Firekeeper, Fire Along the Sky, The Interpreter) and developed the practice he calls Active Dreaming, an original synthesis of contemporary dreamwork and shamanic methods of journeying and healing. A central premise of Moss's approach is that dreaming isn't just what happens during sleep; dreaming is waking up to sources of guidance, healing and creativity beyond the reach of the everyday mind.He introduced his method to an international audience as an invited presenter at the conference of the Association for the Study of Dreams at the University of Leiden in 1994.

Core techniques of Active Dreaming include

The "lightning dreamwork" process, designed to facilitate quick dream-sharing that results in helpful action; the use of the "if it were my dream" protocol encourages the understanding that the dreamer is always the final authority on his or her dream

Dream reentry: the practice of making a conscious journey back inside a dream in order to clarify information, dialogue with a dream character, or move beyond nightmare terrors into healing and resolution

Tracking and group dreaming: conscious dream travel on an agreed itinerary by two or more partners, often supported by shamanic drumming

Navigating by synchronicity: reading coincidence and "symbolic pop-ups" in ordinary life as "everyday oracles".

Dream archaeology: melding the arts of shamanic dreaming with scholarship and detective work to access other times and cultures and bring back fresh and authentic knowledge that can be tested and verified.

Exploring the multiverse and the multidimensional self.
