Natasha Simmons, founder of Yacht Club Access , held an exclusive preview to her new upcoming Yacht Club Access Spring/Summer 2024 collection on Oct. 19.

Founded on the principle of elevating fashion to an art form, Yacht Club Access isn’t just a luxury, sustainable swimwear resort brand, it’s a lifestyle. Each piece in Yacht Club’s exclusive collections embrace a diverse range of designs, from timeless classics that exude effortless elegance to bold and avant-garde creations that push the boundaries of swimwear fashion.

Simmons was also a part of the Columbia Trade Mission trip where the Russell Innovation Center for Entrepreneurs took 20 Black metro Atlanta entrepreneurs to Cali, Columbia to enhance economic development, relationships, and global opportunities for international investment into Colombia.

Simmons also sat down during the exclusive preview to speak with The Atlanta Voice to talk about the upcoming collection, being an entrepreneur, advice, and more.

The Atlanta Voice: Yacht Club Access has had a very busy year, and now you’re planning to launch a brand-new collection the top of next year. What was the inspiration behind the new Spring/Summer 2024 collection?

Natasha Simmons: The Yacht Club Access Spring/Summer 2024 collection was inspired last year went I went to Belize for my birthday, and the resort that I chose to stay at literally was in the middle of the jungle. I was surrounded around so much beautiful and colorful nature, like the hibiscus flowers, the leaves, etc. It was insane. Not only Babar was the new dog on boats, as they say, but just being there, waking up every day, and being engulfed into that nature and the vibrant colors and things like that. I wanted to incorporate those vibrant colors into my collection so people can feel how I feel when you’re engulfed with those colors.

AV: How are you feeling about the exclusive preview and receiving love and support from peers who are special to you?

NS: I was static. At first, I was nervous because I’m like, okay, is this enough, is this what people expect from me? Is this meeting the expectation of Yacht Club? And I even was playing “the devil’s advocate”, like you’re not doing enough. You should do more. You should do more. I’m like, no, I think this is good and then I was like, you know what? How about I take out all the guesswork and do a private preview of the collection and ask my peers how they feel about the collection. And so, the response was amazing. It was great and I feel good. I’ve taken a peek at some of the survey sheets, and the response is really good. So, I’m very happy and I’m excited.

AV: What inspired you to create Yacht Club Access?

NS: I have a four-year stint of modeling and acting, and at the time of when I started into the swimwear industry in 2016, the company was called Commitment Couture, and then COVID hit. So, I had time to sit and reevaluate my business. I’m like, okay, why is this not taking off? I know this is a great, I have a strategy, a great business and niche and I realized people couldn’t pronounce the name. So, I said, okay, well, how can I now incorporate the business and then include myself and my lifestyle? By the time 2020 came around, I was on my second day of dating a guy that owned an actual yacht. I was already a part of the yacht club life. I said to myself, let’s do a little research and see how I can play around. Like, is this really available? Did the research submit it for the trademark? Got it, but Yacht Club, that’s a saturated two words. How can I add on another where it’s a really hone-in what I’m trying to do here? So, I added the word “access” because at the end of the day, when people approach me and they see Yacht Club on my chest, I get to see their faces light up and then it immediately dims because they feel like they can’t afford it, or they can’t have access to that lifestyle. It’s my job to make sure, yes you can have access to the lifestyle.

AV: You were on the trip with other Black entrepreneurs in Cali, Columbia for a historical trade mission, first of its kind, what did you take away from that trip and how did you apply it to your own business?

NS: What I’ve learned is that taking that trip over to Columbia, it’s a different culture, totally different way they do business and with me learning their style of business, what I took from that is bits and pieces that I can incorporate in how I do business. So, I’ve always been the person when I go to a meeting, I need to be ready and prepared to answer whatever questions they have, make sure I have my stuff together, make sure I look the part this and that’s totally the wrong thing to do. According to their culture, they are more about relationship building, getting to know you and building upon what it is of the common denominator of what you are, the real reason why the relationship building even starts. You can be a multi-millionaire this and that, but there they really don’t care. They’re more concerned with who you are, where are you from, what values you have, and what key things that you hold dear to your heart. When I learned that, it made me feel great because that let me know with the advice that I would give someone who’s gearing up to go on an entrepreneurial journey. Being focused and really do a self-evaluation tells me that it’s right on target.

AV: What are your business goals for the remainder of the year and beyond?

NS: It’s funny because I’ve already accomplished all my goals for the year. So, it’s really like I get to enjoy the holiday this year. So, moving forward for 2024, it’s just capitalizing off of my efforts and my hard work and really honing-in on the sales, channels, and platforms that I’ve been blessed with the opportunity to be a part of and partnership.

AV: What do you think is the hardest part about being a business owner?

NS: The hardest part is it takes forever. I, by nature, am a worker. I don’t mind working, strapping up my boots, and hitting the pavement. However, after you’ve spent many hours and days engulfed in something and then by two or three months later, you’re like, okay, but where’s the results? And there’s no results. That’s when the questioning yourself comes in and that’s when the doubts set in. It’s really the process of it. It’s a blessing and a curse within itself. Also, it’s what’s been of great value from what I’ve been learning and my process that has been coming to the forefront of my brain more recently is timing and a lot of what’s happening right now. I’ve been prepared for it years ago and now it’s happening, which only tells me instead of saying, Dang, I could have been did this two years ago and this could have happened three years ago. Instead of looking at it that way, I now can look at and say, yes, it’s my time now. My time is now. I need to now be able to take that big sigh and enjoy with where the level that I am.

AV: What kind of advice do you have to other business owners and people that maybe want to start to start a business that they don’t know how to do or they’re struggling or any type of way? What kind of advice do you have?

NS: The advice that I would give is take a real hard look at yourself and identify your strengths and weaknesses, because both of those will be tested in an entrepreneurial journey. If you identify that you have more weaknesses than strengths, then you might want to reconsider, but I honestly feel since I’ve become this successful is because I’m constantly doing a self-evaluation. I’m constantly checking myself; I’m constantly making sure am I operating from a positive spirit, and a positive atmosphere. Creating a positive atmosphere for people is really everything else, the universe will work out for you.

AV: Anything else to add?

NS: Make sure you guys stay tuned. Yacht Club access is a luxury, sustainable swimwear resort brand. It’s more than just fashion, I promise you. It’s a lifestyle.

MSC Seashore

I tried a ship-within-a-ship cruise experience and it was worth it for the endless perks—here’s why

The MSC Yacht Club affords travelers a totally different cruising experience, but you’ll have to splurge.

Erica Lamberg

I heard tales of luxury from people about the ritzy MSC Yacht Club , the ship-within-a-ship concept where discerning passengers enjoy their own area of the cruise ship that includes a dedicated restaurant, private lounge, separate pool and sundeck as well as private butlers and concierges to take of any whim while cruising. The elevated Yacht Club boasts priority everything while sailing MSC.

I sailed on a four-night cruise on the new MSC Seashore, a glitzy ship with Italian flair intermingled with references to New York City at every turn. Although the ship was well-appointed and had amazing dining, drinking and entertainment venues, and a bountiful Top Sail main buffet, thousands of passengers made the ship feel crowded at times, elevators were slow, and as I strolled through the general pools, they were boisterous and crowded.

RECOMMENDED: 10 things about cruising on an adults-only ship that might surprise you

Switch gears to MSC Seashore’s Yacht Club, passkey-protected for lucky guests, and is a 180 from the ship’s general spaces. Once you scan your handy Yacht Club wrist badge, or your room key, you’re instantly given entrance to a breathtaking retreat of 131 staterooms and suites. All this luxury does come at a price. Cruise fares will vary based on destination, time of year, and cabin category, but generally speaking you can expect to pay double for the Yacht Club. And from my experience, it’s worth it. Read more about why you should splurge.

You’re fast-tracked through everything

The Yacht Club’s exclusivity and impeccable service standard started from the moment I got dropped off at the Port Canaveral cruise terminal. There were hundreds of people waiting to board at 1pm on embarkation day. I saw in the distance a canopy that said MSC Yacht Club. My husband and I wheeled our carry-on luggage to the representative under the canopy. I gave her my name and within two seconds, she gave me a sticker to wear and up we ascended on the escalator to check in. Just five minutes later, I was directed to the dedicated check-in area for Yacht Club guests. To my right, I saw about 1,000 people serpentine through ropes to do general check-in. I felt a sense of relief; who wants to wait in that line? Five minutes later, a butler from the Yacht Club insisted on wheeling my luggage to board the ship and I was in my room in a total on 12 minutes from the time I stepped foot out of the car to my stateroom in the Yacht Club.

Relaxing and streamlined

In addition, Yacht Club guests have the freedom to get off the ship first for excursions. Your butler will happily escort you off the ship with a smile. Guests also can disembark on the last morning first, which is a big convenience. Your butler walks you right to the place you disembark, bypassing crowds and hassles. Port Canaveral is about an hour away from Orlando International Airport, and we took a 10 am flight home. We didn’t have to linger around until the afternoon for our flight home.

Another perk is that there’s a special seating area in the theater for shows. All the shows were excellent during my voyage. All other ship passengers have to make reservations in advance for shows but that’s not the case for the privileged Yacht Club passengers. As long as you arrive about 10 minutes before any show you choose, a crew member from the Club will allow you entry into a special roped-off section. Again, no rushing through dinner—you have the flexibility to plan your evenings your way.

MSC Seashore

Your Yacht Club package is packed with remarkable value

The price tag may sound daunting, but there’s lots of value there. All Yacht Club cabins and suites include a premium drink package that covers beverages up to $15. You can use this perk both in the Yacht Club and throughout the ship. In addition, your package includes a two-device Wi-Fi package, which worked well during my sailing. Finally, you get access to the thermal spa suite, which is a place to indulge after a day in port or a sea day. Commonly, there’s a taboo regarding mini-bars, but not in the Yacht Club. It’s stocked each day with the beverages you want; just tell your butler and consider it done.

You get perks ashore too

If your sailing includes a call to Ocean Cay, MSC’s private island, Yacht Club guests get an elevated experience there too. Yacht Club guests enjoy a private area, and a dedicated restaurant called the Ocean House. While other ship guests were hosted to a buffet of predictable fare, I enjoyed a lobster roll, and my husband chose carne asada. In my opinion, one thing that could be improved was the tram service to the Yacht Club’s private area. We were told the last tram back was 3:30pm if we didn’t want to trek a 15-minute walk in the heat. Since we were docked in Ocean Cay for the evening and weren’t sailing, I was a bit dismayed by this logistical quirk. I felt like I was keeping an eye on my phone to make sure I didn’t miss the last tram.

You have private areas with curated food and drink and outdoor spaces

Within the Yacht Club complex, there’s the Yacht Club Restaurant, Top Sail Lounge and the One Pool Buffet, which are all exclusive to Yacht Club guests. Obviously, the food and service are steps above other dining venues of the ship, I can vouch for that. Although the food is delicious, if you don’t want to pay extra to dine at the specialty restaurants or fuss in the main buffet, eating three meals a day in the Yacht Club restaurant can get a bit monotonous. The breakfast is the same daily, and lunch and dinner offer a menu with daily specials plus a few standby selections like a hamburger or pasta each day. Although the Yacht Club Restaurant concept is desirable, I would strongly suggest dining in other venues on board, especially for dinner. I thoroughly enjoyed specialty dining in Ocean Cay Restaurant, Butcher’s Cut, and Kaito Teppanyaki. I also want to mention that late afternoon high tea is offered daily at the Yacht Club Restaurant. It was one of the nicest I have experienced at sea.

MSC Seashore

Also available exclusively to Yacht Club passengers is the Top Sail Lounge, which offers panoramic water views and has chef-curated selections from morning through late night. We enjoyed popping into the lounge at all hours to try finger foods and sweets. The One Pool Buffet offers a more casual option for breakfast and lunch by the pool. The buffet has grilled fish, sandwiches and lots of delicious options if you want to dine outside.

There’s also an exclusive area with a private pool and two whirlpools for Yacht Club guests only. The sun deck loungers are very comfortable and I never had to worry about finding a lounger, there are ample. One issue I had was that there was almost no shade on the sun deck; there were shaded day beds for Royal Suite and Owners Suite guests, but beyond those, I couldn’t find any shade, which was disappointing.

You can justify the price at the end of your cruise

Overall, the best way to explain my enthusiasm for my MSC Yacht Club experience is this: it’s better to book an interior stateroom in the Yacht Club than a luxe cabin outside the Yacht Club. It’s worth the splurge and you return home feeling truly pampered and it’s money well-spent. And I make this prediction: Once you try a ship-within-a-ship concept like the MSC Yacht Club, you won’t want cruise any other way. Bon Voyage!

Cape Coral residents air grievances over Yacht Club park construction

yacht club voice

Cape Coral residents were given a chance to speak on the  Yacht Club Community Park renovations at a town hall in the Yacht Club Ballroom Monday night with more than 100 residents voicing their concerns.

"I'm glad so many people came out to realize how concerned they are about this project," said Councilwoman Gloria Tate, who hosted the town hall.

The crowd was quick to voice their frustration as the meeting started with many in the crowd looking for answers and explanation on how the construction will impact the popular Yacht Club.

Yacht Club delays:  Cape Coral delays construction on Yacht Club while permits sought

Closure: Cape Coral Yacht Club Community Park to close for two years for renovations

"The takeaway is probably the frustration of a parking garage, the frustration of a two-year closure instead of phases, and the frustration of not understanding how the funding works," Tate said.

The city of Cape Coral announced it would close the Yacht Club for two years because of safety concerns after consulting with Wright Construction Group in a December council meeting.

The city was expected to start construction on April 1, but permit approval delays have left the city with no idea on when construction will begin.

Michael Ilczyszyn, interim public works director, said the public works department is working on the final designs, final issues and questions that the various agencies have for the Yacht Club before construction can move forward.

"So the Army Corps is looking at protecting species. They're looking at small tooth sawfish, they're looking at manatees, they're looking at sea grasses. The DEP is looking at sovereign submerged lands, they're looking at flushing, whether or not we're going to create a degradation in water quality," Ilczyszyn said.

He said that the delay in the permitting process is caused by a backlog from these agencies.

"And so the issue that we're having, that we understand, is that they're understaffed and it's just taking longer," Ilczyszyn said.

The closure is estimated to save the estimated $42 million project four months in construction time and $340,000 in costs.

In 2018, voter approved a $60 million expansion of the city's parks and amenities through the Parks and Recreation General Obligation (GO) Bond, which included needed improvements at the Yacht Club.

The renovation includes replacing seawalls and marina wet slips, replacing the harbormaster building and boat ramp, and building a parking garage and beach restrooms. The beach will also be expanded, and utilities will be relocated.

The parking garage will be three stories tall, and city staff is recommending $2 fee for parking.

Yacht Club construction draws critics

Several members of the community had reservations about the project.

Arthur Gordon, a Yacht Club member since 2013, said the closure has come as a shock to him and many other residents.

"From the inception we were told by parks and recreation management that it would be done in phases," Gordon said.

He also raised issue with the proposed $2 parking fee at the Yacht Club, calling it "absurd."

Diane Digennaro, who lives across the canal from the Yacht Club, said she worries about the environmental impact that could come from construction.

"You know what that construction is going to do to the older fish? That's just going to kill them," Digennaro said.

She also worries about traffic congestion and noise from the project.

"That's what I'm going to be hearing every day in my back yard," Digennaro said.

Some residents during the Q&A portion said the city was giving preferential treatment to The Boathouse Tiki Bar & Grill, to which the city leases space, when it comes to parking and letting them continue to operate during the construction.

"They have a private-own boathouse that I'm sure they're getting money from," Ryan Desmond said. "That has obstructed all the parking down here."

Desmond said that he's been looking into docking his boat at other marinas like the Fort Myers Yacht Club. He's been on a wait list for eight months, he said.

"I might not even get it for another eight more months," Desmond.

Desmond also worries that charging for parking won't be the end of it, and the city will add more fees on services once the park reopens.

"There's going to be, they're going to nickel and dime you to death, so why even stay here?" Desmond said.

Tim Hannah saw this town hall as a way for residents to vent and let their frustrations be known.

"Long story short, we are not going to do anything differently," Hannah said. "It's just so that they can have people say something about it and air their grievances."

Hannah, a fisherman, likes to fish and take photos of the scenery at the Yacht Club.

"If I invite people down here, one thing I want to do is bring them down here to use the boathouse and see the sights. Beautiful scenery out there, especially the sunset," Hannah said.

He worries that the "community feel" of the Yacht Club will go away once construction starts.

"It's not a people-friendly (process), it's a developer-friendly thing," Hannah said.

Cape Coral officials respond

A look back:  Cape Coral Yacht Club turns 55 this week

Mayor John Gunter said the project is on hold until the permits clear, but he said it's not an opportunity to revisit the design of the project.

"The project's already been designed, we've already had the community engagement. We put out a portion of this project for bid already. So the project is moving forward," Gunter said.

He said staff will be working on addressing the concerns residents have, and the city will look into minimizing the impact to the community while following safety procedures.

"I think what we need to try to do is what can we do to mitigate some of the things that may happen as a result of the construction of the project," Gunter said. "But with that being said, we have to also make sure that the project is safe and we minimize our liability because the last thing that we want is for someone to come down here and get hurt during the construction aspect of the project."

Ilczyszyn said the entire area will need to be shut down to make room for heavy equipment and space to store materials or park work vehicles.

"It needs to go somewhere, and it needs to be on site," Ilczyszyn said.

Gunter also addressed concerns regarding parking fees.

"That still has to come to council. It still has to be approved. We had not got to that step yet," Gunter said. "That's what staff is recommending as far as the revenue bonds to help pay for the three-story parking garage, which is a large expense here for this particular project."

He also said that the partnership with the Boathouse restaurant could also help pay for the project if the city decides to use the revenue gained from the lease toward the revenue bond.

Gunter said they are not doing this project to make money, but to turn the Yacht Club into a "gem of the city."

The required regulatory permits the city has not received yet are from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Southwest Florida Water Management District, and Florida Department of Environmental Protection. No time frame was given for when permits are expected to be issued.

What's next for the Yacht Club project

Tate said Monday's town hall won't be the last time the public will be able to communicate with the city that way.

"I think we're gonna need to do this again. This isn't the final one," Tate said. "Several council members were here tonight, it was on Facebook live, so they're hearing the frustration from the people, and they'll communicate with their constituents."

Councilwoman Jennifer Nelson said she sees more discussion on mitigating the effects of the Yacht Club construction down the line.

"I'm sure it will be probably (discussed) on a future committee of the whole meeting so that we can talk through kind of all of the concerns that we've heard," she said.

The Yacht Club

It’s all about the sunset that makes this a perfect wedding facility

DAVID TAFFET | Senior Staff Writer [email protected]

The Yacht Club is located on the east bank of Lake Ray Hubbard. From the decks of the clubhouse, the Dallas skyline can barely be seen in the distance. Positioned at one of the wider expanses of the lake, the club is front row for gorgeous sunsets.

But what about that haze that hangs over the city? That just makes sunsets more colorful, while the air over Rockwall is clear.

While there’s no shortage of places in the city of Dallas that welcome same-sex couples; outside the city limits, though, it’s another matter. A welcome for gay or lesbian couples is in short supply in surrounding areas. In fact, for some facilities, it’s been a badge of honor to deny same-sex couples access.

The Yacht Club, though, not only wants our community to feel welcome, they’ve already hosted some same-sex weddings, which Sales and Marketing Manager Danielle Wright has described as some of the most joyous events her venue has hosted.

Sliding glass doors open to a catering hall with bar on this lower level that can accommodate a band, dancing and tables.

Upstairs is the ballroom that can seat 250, as well as a restaurant for smaller events. Want to see if the venue is right for you without a sales pitch? Go incognito and try out the restaurant for lunch or dinner Wednesdays through Sundays. Actually, go for dinner; you really won’t believe you’re in Dallas — well, Rockwall, but the lake is actually within the city of Dallas — when you see that magnificent sunset.

The building is equipped with bride and groom rooms. The bride room is large enough for two brides to get ready for their big day — or you could use both rooms.

They also offer an “elopement package” for fewer than 20 people for a four-hour experience plus an opportunity to come ahead of time for photos.

For landlocked Dallas, The Yacht Club offers a very different setting than most other venues in the area — secluded, but easy to reach; just a half hour from downtown Dallas, yet far away from the urban hubbub.

For a place that’s outside the city welcoming you “literally with open arms,” Wright said, The Yacht Club is a wonderful choice.

Getting there: Take I-30 east. After crossing Lake Ray Hubbard, exit Ridge Road. Make a right and travel about a mile and a half to Henry M. Chandler Dr. Make a right. Go just a few hundred feet and make a right at the guard house marked Chandler’s Landing. Tell the guard you’re there to go to The Yacht Club. Make a left and go three very long blocks. Make another left on Yacht Club Drive and pull into the parking lot. The Yacht Club is along the lake.

Cape residents voice concerns over Yacht Club renovation

yacht club voice

CAPE CORAL, Fla. — Cape Coral residents were invited to attend a public meeting Monday night to discuss plans to renovate the popular waterfront park known as the Cape Coral Yacht Club.

Funds for the renovation come from a $60 million dollar expansion of city's parks and recreation amenities that was approved by Cape Coral voters in November 2018.

In 2020, Cape Coral City Council approved a concept plan that includes an expanded beach along the river, seawall replacement, and a parking garage.

Some were outraged about the possible prices that might be charged for that parking.

"I come to this beach two or three times a week and I park for free…and I'm here for six hours, so now I'm going to pay twelve dollars? I think it's ridiculous," says Teresa Frosoni, a Cape Coral resident who spoke up during the meeting.

But when asked about it, Cape Coral mayor John Gunter says that instituting parking costs isn't on the table yet.

"I will tell you that no definitive ordinance has been passed or resolution where that fee will be mandated," says the Mayor.

The garage is intended to be three stories, which has some wondering if it takes up too much space.

"I don't understand why the structure has to be that big. I understand parking is important. Beach is going to be bigger, they need more parking - I get it. I think it can be accomplished a little differently," says Bob Carroll, another Cape resident.

Mayor Gunter says size and the parking prices could be points of discussion at future city council meetings.

"Probably sometime in the future once the project begins, I'm sure we'll have some of those discussions," he says.

The Mayor adds that the Yacht Club, which was initially supposed to shut down for construction on April 1, is still waiting for the necessary permits required for the project.

In the meantime, the park will remain open until those permits are received, and residents will get a 60 day notice when construction is supposed to begin.

Game wardens have accused two of San Diego’s top yachtsmen of poaching shellfish, an odd incident that recently sent shockwaves through their genteel world.

On Aug. 25, the California Department of Fish and Wildlife got a tip that guys were diving off a boat near Catalina Island and bringing up lobster and abalone, said Capt. Patrick Foy, a spokesman for the department’s enforcement division, who described what happened that day.

Lobster season was a month away, and it’s now illegal to harvest abalone any time of year, because of population declines up and down the coast. Abalone are prized mollusks that are endangered because of overfishing and disease.

Game wardens got to the boat, named the EZ Rider, that the men had been seen diving from.

Foy said the boat came back as registered to Chuck Nichols. That name didn’t mean much to the wardens at the time but it means something in San Diego social circles. Nichols is a former commodore of the San Diego Yacht Club. A “commodore” is the elected chairman of the 132-year-old boating and social club.

Nichols did not respond to messages from VOSD.

The EZ Rider was unoccupied but wardens searched it. They found dive gear that looked wet and recently used. They found four shucked abalone and five lobster tails in a cooler.

One of the wardens, Rob Rojas, had been on his college’s swim team. He dove into the water and managed to grab discarded lobster carcasses and abalone guts beneath the boat.

“Now they’ve got a pretty good picture of what happened,” Foy said of the wardens.

The next piece of the puzzle was to find the divers. The wardens went ashore and began asking around for Nichols.

The wardens figured out that Nichols was on another boat, the CC Rider, which was in the middle of a race around part of Catalina, which sits 20 miles off the Southern California coast.

The wardens were by this point on a small patrol skiff, which they used to pull over the CC Rider, which is also registered to Nichols.

They boarded the sailboat, conducted some interviews and found that two members of the crew, Kyle Clark and Jesse James, both 66, admitted to taking the lobsters and abalone.

Clark is also a former commodore of the San Diego Yacht Club.

Neither Clark nor James responded to messages.

Foy said though the lobster and abalone were found on Nichols’ EZ Rider, he wasn’t in trouble. But James and Clark now face $164,000 in total fines, though how much each could be asked to pay will depend on how prosecutors decide to divide up the charges against them. Most of that hefty potential fine comes from the heavy penalty for poaching abalone, which can be between $15,000 and $40,000 apiece.

Foy said the department writes thousands of citations a year, though it does far more than just track down suspected poachers at sea.

His experience is that yacht clubs do not like poachers.

In San Diego, rumors of the incident traveled fast and got a bit out of hand: Nobody was handcuffed or jailed, as one version of events had it.

Michael J. Dorgan, the club’s current commodore, said the incident did not take place during a San Diego Yacht Club event and was not connected to the club in any way.

He also condemned poaching.

“In spite of the lack of a direct connection to SDYC, and while I can’t comment on the specific allegations against the individuals involved, I can tell you that San Diego Yacht Club considers its stewardship of our natural resources to be of tremendous importance in all of our programs, and we always insist that our members follow not only the letter of the law but also the spirit of the law when they participate in SDYC and/or other programs, including our angling activities,” Dorgan said in an email.

Ry Rivard was formerly a reporter for Voice of San Diego. He wrote about water and power. More by Ry Rivard

Effective yacht club governance requires a clear understanding of the club’s objectives and priorities, as well as a commitment to transparency and accountability. The board of directors should establish clear policies and procedures for decision-making, financial management, and member communication.

This includes not only demographic diversity but also diversity of experience, skills, and perspectives. A diverse leadership team can bring new ideas and approaches to the table, promote inclusivity and equity, and help the club better serve its members and community.

To ensure effective governance, many yacht clubs use benchmarking and best practices to evaluate their operations and identify areas for improvement. This might involve comparing the club’s performance to that of other clubs, conducting member surveys, or seeking input from industry experts.

In addition to strong governance, effective leadership is essential for a successful yacht club. The club’s leaders should be passionate about yachting and committed to promoting the club’s mission and values. They should also be skilled communicators, able to build relationships with members, sponsors, and community partners.

This might involve developing new programs or events, seeking out new sponsorship or partnership opportunities, or addressing member concerns and feedback. By staying engaged and responsive to the needs of their members and community, yacht club leaders can help ensure the long-term success of their club.

Yacht Clubs and the Environment

Yacht clubs have a unique relationship with the environment. They rely on the natural beauty of the water and the surrounding landscape to attract members and visitors, and they have a responsibility to protect those resources for future generations. • Reducing Waste : Many yacht clubs are implementing recycling programs and reducing the use of single-use plastics. They are also encouraging members to bring their own reusable water bottles and coffee cups to reduce waste.

Yacht clubs have long been a symbol of wealth, luxury, and exclusivity, and as such, they have been featured in numerous movies, TV shows, and books. Here are some notable examples of yacht clubs in popular culture:

  • The Great Gatsby : F. Scott Fitzgerald’s classic novel features the fictional West Egg Yacht Club, which is where Jay Gatsby’s extravagant parties take place. The club is described as “one of the most fashionable and exclusive of its kind,” and it serves as a backdrop for the story’s themes of wealth, class, and social status.
  • Caddyshack : This 1980 comedy film features the fictional Bushwood Country Club, which is home to a group of wealthy and eccentric golfers. The club’s yacht basin is a prominent location in the movie, and it serves as the site of a memorable scene involving a giant animatronic gopher.
  • The O.C. : This popular TV show from the early 2000s features the Newport Beach Yacht Club, which is where many of the characters socialize and attend events. The club is portrayed as a glamorous and exclusive destination, and it serves as a symbol of the show’s affluent California setting.
  • Succession : This HBO drama series follows the lives of the wealthy and dysfunctional Roy family, who are the owners of a media conglomerate. In season two, the family attends a high-society event at the fictional Tern Haven Yacht Club, which is described as “the most exclusive club in the Northeast.” The club’s members are shown to be ruthless and competitive, much like the show’s main characters.

While these depictions of yacht clubs in popular culture may not be entirely accurate or representative of all yacht clubs, they do reflect the cultural significance and fascination with these exclusive institutions.

Robby's Voice Update from Bob and Jeannie Brandt

Robby's Voice Update from Bob and Jeannie Brandt

We just wanted to take a moment to update the club on a turn of events for Robby’s Voice. As you know, we were invited by the court system of Medina to run Robby’s Recovery Center and eventually purchase the property and full ownership of the center. This was the result of 5½ years of effort and the fulfillment of a dream. The first five months met and exceeded all expectations having had more than 3000 sign ins spread over 20 weekly meetings, well attended social events and recognition by a number of state and local organizations. Effective February 2, 2018, we have officially terminated our involvement with the center and have removed ourselves from the board of directors. The courts decided to modify the original plan to include a full service 5 star restaurant and include alcohol as a menu item. This was done over the objection of the board but the courts control the grant money. As an organization we made our decision after consulting with a number of people involved in recovery at a high level and our own personal beliefs. Simply, we could not agree to something that went against our values. There is more involved here but suffice to say that we are disappointed.

But, fear not. Since our widely supported decision, we have been contacted by the ADAMHS Board of Medina, a State Representative, the Kiwanis and several other organizations, to partner with them on a new venture. We are exploring all opportunities. In addition, the Mercy Health System, with locations across Ohio, has asked us to develop a program to bring to all their locations to better educate the medical staff. The Ohio High School Athletic Association has also asked us to partner with them on an educational program and our Family Matters support group has been so successful that similar models are being developed throughout the county with our assistance. Medline Industries, a large medical supply company, has invited us to explore other avenues to help fight against this epidemic. We have enough to keep us busy for a while.

We just wanted to bring the club up to speed before the rumors fly since Harbor Bay Yacht Club has been so supportive. See you all in the spring.

“Zefira, a magnificent, lean aluminium and carbon 50 metre yacht. A project in which, together with our designers, we put our heart”

Experienced european owners brought together a top team of Dubois, Fitzroy and Tessier to produce their dream yacht: sleek, sophisticated and impressive under sail.

The push for a single level between bridge, saloon and cockpit, combined with ultra-sleek aesthetics, nudged the Dubois design team into new territory. “To get good visibility from the helmstations we had to work hard to lower the accommodation as much as possible, while keeping an open feeling” adds McKeon.

The interior, styled and drawn by Remi Tessier , features a combination of bleached timbers and white leather which results in clean modern lines and provides bright comfortable living areas.

Fitzroy Yachts Zefira

The sea trial was pubblished on Superyacht 31 – spring 2012

Zefira S/Y is one of those few yachts that became an attraction for yacht enthusiasts and professionals  well before she hit the water.

This yacht was designed and built with the experience and passion for sailing boats her owners demonstrated from the start as well as a naval engineering and a project design team from  Ed Dubois studio for the exterior, while Remi Tessier was responsible for all the interiors. Zefira was built in a yard which enjoys a  worldwide  reputation for the construction of large sailing yachts.

fitzroy zefira

With such an opening introduction one can expect nothing less than something absolutely extraordinary, where the term used must be read in its best meaning to underscore something that has really nothing of the ordinary. We had the pleasure of talking with the owners who are currently sailing on their yacht after they had  carried out important work in the design phase with the project team to define specific guidelines and details.

Beyond the highly involving dialogue which ensued with flowing examples  of their own sailing experience and passion, we managed to grasp and better understand the idea behind the project which began with a seven metre sloop and  gradually developed in the course of the following 40 years  of which  many were spent at  sea. Putting words to emotion and feelings is never easy to do and  more so when they are other people’s. In this case however everything was a lot easier for us   thanks to our interviewee’s eloquent communicative capability.

The first point our attention was brought to was that Zefira is the largest sailing y

acht ever designed by Dubois with no fly bridge and built by Fitzroy Yachts in New Zealand.  This may strike our readers as a mere detail, but it is in fact one of the principal fundamentals outlining this project because it translates into flowing external lines and a unique profile when observed sideways on.

The choice  of doing without a fly bridge is somewhat unusual since up until  recently a “fly” had been widely accepted as  a run of the mill thing to have on a sailing yacht beyond a given size, but which nevertheless, Zefira is proud to do without giving cause for, among others ,  the following comment volunteered by some of the designers not involved in the project: “The world of sailing now stands  divided between before Zefira and after Zefira”.

Naturally enough this comment in particular is aimed at the yachts’ profile, which brings to a standstill what had become a consolidated practice on yachts this size. Aesthetics is principally  why the owners decided to do without the fly option as well as for practical reasons  they eloquently highlighted: without one  on a  50 metre sailing boat  there’s a complete total view of both what lies ahead up to the horizon and of the sail plan.

Moreover using a higher windswept and sun scorched horizontal plane rather than the main deck itself is by its very nature something destined to be exploited only sporadically and quite correctly in their opinion doesn’t justify having one.

The thought behind the whole project as the requests submitted to both designers and yard indicated,  were to enjoy a pure thorough bred for its performing lines and technical contents, capable of offering the sort of space and commodities expected when cruising extensively in all weather conditions. At a first glance the goal seems to have been easily achieved, but if  we then go into an in-depth analysis, the comments volunteered by project designers earlier seems surely appropriate. The husband and wife team (the owners) followed up on construction work from the initial stages to completion, working through the more important phases in close contact with the professional teams involved.

According to the owners the best part was witnessing the step by step progress of such an enterprise. We can understand the reasons why and genuinely  hope that in  the future such desire will generate the construction of other such extraordinary ships.

Several International prizes for design and technical contents have been awarded to Zefira. Dubois Naval Architects’ studio is proud of the recognitions bestowed since this is the largest sailing yacht project without a “fly” they’ve ever made so far and also for the passion and creativity expressed time and time again by the owners who incidentally had been the previous owners of another Dubois  project built by Alloy Yachts: Kokomo of London (now Nubero Blau). The challenge taken on by the studio was one that meant blending the huge experience acquired by the owners to innovative aesthetics, with a hull capable of delivering the sea-keeping qualities and performance requested.

The owners wished for a boat that could be another home from home: spacious, with a project design that looked ahead into the future. For this reason the design team was invited by the owners to pay them a visit and to take a look at their house to better understand what they wanted.

The choice of the yard was principally dictated by delivery times even if Fitzroy Yachts had been chosen also in function of preceding work carried out from Dubois projects.

Among some of the clever solutions highlighted by the owners in the course of our conversation we wish to mention the ease in steering they experienced and handling the yacht, of course aided by electronics and important data communication systems capable of monitoring and performing many of the required manoeuvres without hindering visibility.

The rig which is capable of carrying up to 3,000 square metres of canvass is per se a very interesting technical achievement inasmuch as it sports a 63.50 metre mast and can still be defined as being “light”. Obviously there’s a carbon fibre mast and boom, as well as fibre stays that have been purposely chosen to reduce weight high above the waterline which translates into less draught and better performance in breezes.

All of the choices adopted for Zefira mean she is very competitive on the race track even against racers and  in spite of the many commodities she carries with her.  As for the interiors and  much of the work put in by  Remi Tessier designer and the co-owner they enhanced an undoubted feeling of both tranquillity and elegance.

Gauged chromatic variety  meets the discerning eye as it takes in lighter and darker shades of handcrafted woodwork placed without ever causing excessive contrast, followed by polished steel elements and ad hoc lighting which enhances relaxation throughout every area. The space chosen to house each piece of furniture, is fruit of  careful study that has contributed into ensuring an uncompromised degree of comfort in the owners’ suite which is situated in the stern and in each of the three guest cabins as well.

One is a twin while the other two are double each one of them sports its own private bathroom. The crew quarters are situated in the bow area and with space for a lounge and crew mess room, which translates into staff’s quality living standards on board. The yacht’s convivial areas are also well distributed and large to ensure adequate privacy to guests and owners alike.

The electronics and navigation aids installed are the most modern on the market, with data and alarm control systems and displays in each of the two external command /control stations  as well as on the bridge deck as can be expected on a state of the art ship such as this. Dictated by reasons of space we have to limit our text to that which has so far been described even when the meeting with Zefira’s owners was so stimulating  we were prompted  to go further.

Since both of them  described Zefira as being a point of arrival but of departure too, we wish them to continue their research work in the yachting field and to offer us, who knows what other input and ideas in the future. For further information please contact: Angelo Colombo

NV obtains new photos and videos of the elimination of traitorous ex-MP Ilya Kyva near Moscow

  • Oops! Something went wrong. Please try again later. More content below

Photos and videos of the elimination of pro-Russian ex-MP Ilya Kyva in a Moscow suburb were obtained by NV from sources in Ukraine’s SBU Security Service on Dec. 11.

This special operation was meticulously planned and successfully executed, the SBU informant confirmed.

In one imgae, Kyva's lifeless body can be seen in the snow surrounded by bloodstains. The location where “deserved punishment awaited the traitor” is near the place that Kyva filmed many anti-Ukrainian videos, sources say.

Kyva was a high-priority target, SBU said. His daily routines, movements, and habits were extensively studied in the operation. Despite strong security, the SBU managed to eliminate him just outside Moscow.

“This [Kyva’s elimination] serves as a signal to all traitors and military criminals who have sided with the enemy. Remember: Russia will not protect you. Death is the only prospect awaiting enemies of Ukraine,” SBU Chief Vasyl Malyuk said.

Ukraine’s SBU eliminated Kyva in a special operation in Moscow Oblast on Dec. 6, said NV sources in the intelligence service.

Kyva's “bloodied body”, discovered with a shot through the head, was found in the park of an elite club hotel in the Moscow region on Dec.6, Russian propaganda Telegram channels reported.

Kyva was shot with an unidentified firearm and died from the injuries on the scene, the Russian Investigative Committee claimed.

Kyva had fled to Spain ahead of Russia’s full-scale invasion. He then appeared in Russian propaganda broadcasts in Moscow, actively spreading lies about Ukraine. Kyva also sought “political asylum” and citizenship from the enemy aggressor.

The Ukrainian parliament stripped Kyva of his MP status in March 2022, charging him with treason. He was additionally charged with publicly calling for a violent change in the constitutional order and propaganda on behalf of the aggressor state in Aug. 2023.

J.J. McCarthy second overall? + QB class red flags, Dak Prescott on the open market | Inside Coverage

Jason Fitz is joined by Senior NFL Reporters Charles Robinson and Jori Epstein to go behind the scenes on the latest rumors and news around the NFL. The trio start with takeaways from the NFL owner's meetings as Jori was on the ground in Orlando. The hosts discuss the fallout of the new kickoff rule (are rosters going to change because of it?), the two Christmas Day games and what the heck Jerry Jones was doodling in his notebook. Next, it's time to pull out the crystal ball as the hosts attempt to look into the future for some key quarterbacks, starting with Michigan QB J.J. McCarthy. McCarthy's draft stock has been skyrocketing lately as some rumors emerged that he could go as high as second overall. Charles gives his thoughts and what he's hearing from GMs around the league before moving onto Brock Purdy and whether San Francisco will be willing to pay him when the time comes. Charles dives deeper into the 2024 quarterback class and why every prospect has a massive red flag, and Jori gives us the latest on the Dak Prescott contract negotiations, which seem to be heading in the wrong direction. All signs are pointing towards Dak hitting free agency next offseason. Finally, Fitz wraps things up by asking about Deion Sanders' comments about choosing where his sons get drafted and whether or not player empowerment could be ascending to a new level with the emergence of NIL.
