New conversion project for Icon Yachts

HARLINGEN – Icon Yachts, the Dutch shipyard that turns commercial vessels into gleaming explorer superyachts, has won an order to convert an offshore support vessel into an expedition yacht.

The order, signed at the Monaco Yacht Show, is the first project for Swiss businessman Micca Ferrero, Icon Yachts’ new CEO, who recently acquired a majority stake in the Dutch yard on the Netherlands’ north shore.

Icon Yachts will convert the 66m (217ft) Ocean Ness, an offshore support vessel that the Norwegian yard of Kleven built in 2001.

Icon is lengthening the vessel by 4 meters and giving it a completely new look. The conversion retains 95% of the vessel’s original platform and superstructure. There will be room for 12 guests; two VIP cabins and three double cabins are located on the main deck. The owner’s 135 sq. m (1453 sq. ft) is three decks higher. There will be room for 19 crew.

An oversized garage can be used to store expedition “toys,” such as submarines and tenders, and to launch them with cranes on either side. The fully certified helipad can also serve as an entertainment platform, with more than 200 square meters of outdoor space. The main salon has deck-to-ceiling windows.

Last year, icon Yachts delivered the spectacular conversion project Ragnar, a 68m (223 ft) expedition yacht, previously known as Sanaborg, an offshore support vessel with icebreaker features built in 2012.

Project Master’s owner wants a family-oriented luxury vessel suitable for cruising around the world. To make it also suited for charters, facilities such as a jacuzzi, spa, fully equipped gym and sauna will be added.

Hybrid bow thrusters will replace the mechanically driven Rolls Royce stern thrusters with Power Take Ins (PTIs). This configuration will allow conversion to full diesel-electric propulsion at a later stage. The top speed is 14 knots, and the autonomous range is 6,000 miles.

Icon Yachts reveals interiors of 64m superyacht concept Mission

Dutch yard Icon Yachts has offered a first look at the interiors of its 63.9-metre expedition yacht concept, Mission. First revealed during the Monaco Yacht Show 2023, the explorer comes from the drawing board of Bernd Weel Design and would be capable of carrying six tenders and RIBs, plus a submersible for three passengers and an Airbus H130.

Mission's new interiors are courtesy of Carla Guilhem , whose "softer". "feminine" style was "deliberately chosen to balance [the yacht's] rugged, hard-edged exterior."

The yacht has an innovative design that centres around modular elements that can be altered and adapted according to the use of the vessel. A representative of Icon explained: "The use of containers allows owners or special charters to adapt the vessel to their evolving needs by incorporating modular areas within or onboard the yacht".

Containers could include scientific research equipment or surplus water toys and tenders and "these dual scenarios can coexist seamlessly without altering the vessel's primary purpose". The containers would be stored in a hexagonal-styled mid-section of the vessel.

The yacht's interiors are futuristic but warm, guided by the principle that it "should be what you see through the windows that grabs the guests' attention", according to designer Bernd Weel. He added that the yacht's distinctive distribution of volume also allows for the creation of "some very special interior spaces". 

"While the exterior of Mission represents the search for the unknown, the interior is designed to facilitate self-discovery, the exploration of the self," explained Carla Guilhem.

"The project embodies an 'experience-focused' design, meaning the vessel is designed to facilitate specialised expeditions, exploration and yacht cruises," continued Weel. "As for the exterior design, it showcases geometrical elements characterized by strong, defined lines. Our inspiration stemmed from outdoor products designed to withstand tough expeditions and SUVs capable of carrying various cargo items. The result is a robust, 'go-anywhere' design with a contemporary and modern appearance."

"Mission represents Icon's commitment to innovation and purpose-driven travel," said Micca Ferrero, owner of Icon Yachts. "It redefines what an explorer yacht can achieve – from sustainability and modularity to profound experiential impact. We're proud to set new benchmarks and lead the way in supporting sustainable exploration."

Mission would have a cruising speed of 12 knots and a 6,000 nautical mile range.

ICON  Yachts  proudly  announces  the  launch  of  their  new-build  concept,  “MISSION”.  Guided  by  the principle  of  “Yachting  with  a  Purpose,  Yachting  with  a  Change,”  MISSION  sets  a  new  standard  for purpose-driven   expedition   vessels,   merging   current   technology   with   a   deep   commitment   to environmental conservation.

At the heart of MISSION lies a vision that focuses on three pivotal principles: sustainability, modularity, and exploration capabilities. Designed for both private and commercial use, MISSION will accommodate 12  guests  with  the  potential  to  expand  to  18,  along  with  a  crew  of  18  and  space  for  up  to  6 supernumeraries  (i.e.  Expedition  staff).  The  vessel’s  operational  scope  encompasses  global  travel, including polar regions during non-ice conditions. She will be equipped with helicopter landing facilities and ample storage space for tenders and toys, plus expedition equipment.

“The  project  embodies  an  ‘experience-focused’  design,  meaning  the  vessel  is  designed  to  facilitate specialised  expeditions,  exploration,  and  yacht  cruises.  MISSION  incorporates  all  the  amenities  and functionalities  on  board  to  create  experiences  and  lasting  memories,”  says  Bernd  Weel,  the  Dutch designer  responsible  for  the  project’s  exterior  design  at  the  award-winning  company  Bernd  Weel Design. He further emphasizes that “the vessel’s design reflects its multipurpose character, from the active lifestyle sports deck to the shipping container docks. MISSION’s versatile design offers a wide array of possibilities.”

“As  for  the  exterior  design  –  explains  Weel  –    it  showcases  geometrical  elements  characterized  by strong,  defined  lines  and  a  hexagonal-styled  mid  section  that  ‘holds’  the  containers.  Our  inspiration stemmed from outdoor products designed to withstand tough expeditions and SUV’s capable of carrying various  cargo  items.  The  result  is  a  robust,  ‘go-anywhere’  design  with  a  contemporary  and  modern appearance.” 

Another key innovation factor of MISSION is its modularity based on the Standard Shipping Container principle. The use of containers allows owners or special charters to adapt the vessel to their evolving needs by incorporating modular areas within or onboard the yacht. For  instance,  one  container  could  be  fully  equipped  with  the  necessary  scientific  instruments  for conducting research on whale species in the Antarctic regions. While a second could serve as a storage space for an array of water toys to provide onboard entertainment for the younger guests and children while they enjoy swimming in the Mediterranean waters. These dual scenarios can coexist seamlessly without altering the vessel’s primary purpose. Russian oligarchs can't buy superyachts — but rich Americans are helping to fill the void

• Florida, where most US users base their boats, has been doing especially well, one expert said.

Both new and used superyacht sales of vessels longer than 100 feet fell again 2023 — in part due to sanctions imposed on Russian oligarchs.

But steady sales in America are helping to split at least some of the difference.

A total of 203 superyachts were sold globally in 2023 — a 17% drop from the 245 sold last year, according to the SuperYacht Times' annual State of Yachting report .

That's down from 2021's peak of 313 superyacht sales — though the report notes the market still remains high above its pre-COVID levels, and that "any number over 200 is historically still a high number."

Sales for superyachts over 200 feet slowed more than their smaller counterparts due to high pricing and longer build times, according to the report. And the fallout from Russian sanctions will likely impact the market for years to come, especially with respect to the larger ships that Russians have purchased in the past.

"Russian buyers remain largely absent from the newbuild market, which has an impact on the market for large newbuilds in particular," according to the report.

That said, SuperYacht Times' head of intelligence, Ralph Dazert, told Business Insider that sales in America are helping to fill some of the void.

"The strength of the US economy just continues to defy expectations, and Florida (where most of the US owners base their boats) has been doing particularly well," Dazert said. "The top end of the market has been hit by the Russian pullout, but it is beginning to bounce back, with mainly inquiries from the US again."

The US share of overall superyacht ownership stayed steady at 23.6% from 2023 to 2024, according to the report, while Russian ownership continued to decline from 8.1% to 7.8% over the same period.

And while Americans have tended to buy slightly smaller yachts than Russians in the past, Dazert said they are gradually moving up in size.

For new superyachts longer than 130 feet, Russia's share (now at 6%) has declined over the past decade, while the US share (29%) has continued to increase, the report found.

The report concludes that the superyacht market could see "further slowdown" in 2024, citing the conflict in the Middle East and the US presidential election — an event that's sometimes thought to impact sales.
