Small Boat Restoration
Tuesday, january 30, 2018, sunfish rudder conversion.
21 comments:
Found you today as I pondered the fate of a pair of Sunfish hulls. Rigging is gone, so I thought about using a kite to pull instead. Plenty of kiteboarders out here moving gear. Also considered modifying to be a stand up paddle board........We'll see! Nice work, well documented. I appreciate your details. Would love to see more photos of the boat in action.
Clark, Great post! I'm looking to replace my rudder assembly with the newer style using your guidance here. I'd also love to repaint the hull. Painting is my least favorite chore, though. What paint do you recommend? My hull is white all around, with the blue and red stripe on the bow. Thanks!
Did you keep the old parts? Swany Dswanwick at mtsports.com
You're welcome. I prefer Pettit Easypoxy, but also have had luck with Interlux Brightside and Rustoleum Topside
Trying to post again Looking for an old brass pin for the old style rudder Swany Dswanwick at Mtsports.com
Try The Sunfish Forum
Thanks Clark! Great post, with so many helpful details. My 1969 Alcort Sunfish will eventually need a rudder modernization, and I appreciated the run-down.
i have a question, how long would it take for the suspension springs to wear off?
Yury, We've had our new style rudder with the springs since the mid-90's. No signs of the springs wearing out. I have also used "stock" hardware store springs to hold a latch on our boarding ladder (different boat) that rusted completely after a few weeks. Materials matter.
Sorry for the late reply. We've only had one break, after owning old and new boats for 25 years and restoring over 20 boats.
Is the old rudder blade and tiller reused in the new conversion just reshaped? Cost of conversion parts please? Until then, I need to buy the tension bold, any one have one?
The old rudder blade and tiller are not reused. Last I checked the cost of new plastic or wood rudder and parts for a conversion was over $500 USD, if you could find them in stock. Yankee Boating Center used to sell a conversion kit. Used wooden parts are available on ebay and The Sunfish Forum or Craigslist. A complete rudder assembly with tiller runs from $150 on the very low side and up to over $300, plus you need the gudgeon, hump shaped backer plate, inspection port, sealant, hardware etc... You could check The Sunfish Forum or Yahoo Sunfish Sailor for the carriage bolt, but make sure you get the correct one. There is a shorter 4 inch bolt that goes to the Sailfish series boats and wooden Sunfish, and a longer 7+ inch bolt that goes to the fiberglass Sunfish. You could get a similar 7 inch long bronze 1/4-20 carriage bolt from Jamestown Distributors and see if they have a brass wing nut with the same thread pattern (I have yet to find a bronze wing nut to fit). https://www.jamestowndistributors.com/userportal/show_product.do?pid=1937 Good luck, Clark
What blade did you use in jigsaw? Any recommendations? Thanks
We use a blade designed for metal or laminate, they have more teeth than a wood cutting blade. Our advice for the jigsaw, make sure you have a dust mask rated for fiberglass, wear goggles and a long sleeve shirt. Have a small brush handy so you can stop the blade and brush dust away to better see your circle. Tape over the entire area first and draw your circle on the tape. Any marine sealant will work, most hardware stores carry the 3M brand. #8x1 screws should work, buy som 1 1/2 just in case and buy washers and nuts as well. Buy a few extra of each in case you drop one inside the hull and it disappears. You may also want to buy a deep socket and handle that fits the #8 nut, that is the best and easiest way to hold the nut while you tighten it. a regular small socket may not be deep enough as the nut tightens over the screw. Good luck!
Just acquired a 1964 hull. Thank you for posting this thread. Very helpful

Boa noite! Gostaria muito de construir um. Será que poderia usar compensado de 10mm. Para as laterais ? (Costados) Sou fã desse clássico lindo e elegante... Abração...
In the picture under "picture of some of the parts needed", what is the pin inserted in the rudder that the tension springs connect to called? Also, what is it's length?
We call it a rudder tension spring pin. I'll have to measure it.
How did you seal the deck/hull seam just above the gudgeon? Mine was converted by a previous owner, and has the same gap in the aluminum trim in that spot. Caulk seems to fail and allow water to leak in.
The seam needs adhesive, not sealant. You can inject thickened epoxy into any gaps in the seam. We use a small syringe with Pettit Flexpoxy or TotalBoat THIXO.

Changing over my pre '71 fish to updated rudder. gudgeon kit came with instructions but no dimension as to how high or low to place the gudgeon on the transom. I would assume you'd want it as low as possible to keep all the rudder in the water but someone may know more? Appreciate the tips

Re: insntalling new rudder gudgeon The AMF instructions I kept from the '70s and Sunfish/Laser instructions I received in the late '90s both state "centered". Since laterally is a given, I take that to mean vertically.
Re: insntalling new rudder gudgeon I just completed my conversion kit last weekend, and was going to wait until the fall when it was slow to post my comments/suggestions on the experience. Come back in a few hours and I'll do it all out. To answer your question, put it flush with the top of the deck, and then drop it down about two millimeters. Run a piece of masking tape across the bottom of the aluminum trim such as to make the trim a pseudo one long piece. Put the gudgeon right up against that piece of masking tape - which will be about two millimeters from the top. This way, if you ever go back and fix the trim piece as one long piece, you are covered - you won't have to remove and redo the gudgeon plate (because you put it so high as to block the aluminum trim piece from going directly across). Yours is a 1971 fish, and Problem #1 is that you are going to have to redrill your gudgeon holes. Go up on the windline.net site, and reread the rudder conversion piece. Those pre-drilled top holes on the gudgeon plate are going to put you right into the wooden teak block that is right underneath the deck (you'll find that teak block when you drill for inspection port). And they won't hold because you can't put a nut on them. See the top of the windline.net set for that diagram - you'll end up with (4) newly drilled holes, and (4) empty pre-drilled holes. You'll also need some Marine-Tex, or some other sort of epoxy or polyester resin, new screws (the kit screws are crap), additional metal drill bits (the kit metal drill bit is crap), and a good 12 pack of your favorite carbonated beverage. I'll come back n a few hours with more pictures and suggestions. Here are some additional diagrams from Wayne on the topic of internal blocks, as taken from a few weeks ago (this is helpful in the process). NightSailor also has some pictures related to the topic in Link #2. These pictures were taken during his SCUD project. The final link are the directions from the windline.net website. And yes, your particular question is the first question I came across in doing the Sunfish directions that are in the kit. Be prepared for more.... Re: insntalling new rudder gudgeon Mountainfisher - I'm planning to do the rudder conversion too on my '71, and the gudgeon on my '81 is right up against the deck flange. The benefit to a higher mount may be less chance of the tiller rubbing on the deck. Hope this helps - Matty (short time lurker, first time poster)
Re: insntalling new rudder gudgeon Ok so I've got centered vertically, flush against the flange and 2mm down off the flange. I think I'll wait for a few more comments b4 pulling out the drill motor. I mixed a microballoon/resin filler and stuck the backing plate in today. Don't care about the pre-drilled holes cuz I planned to thru bolt it anyway. Wanna do this once.

Re: insntalling new rudder gudgeon You're halfway there, so I'll do those formal directions/suggestions some other time. On the windline.net website, he mentions "remove the block of wood if you can". The wood he is referring to is not against the back wall, but is instead, directly under the deck. This is where the old hardware was bolted to (see picture). Since you already resined the internal plate, I assume you either pulled the block out, or else cut the internal plate to fit. The '81 wouldn't have an internal block, so this would allow that internal plate to right up to the top of that internal back wall. The wood block was there to hold the old style rudder hardware, and the '81 had the new style gudgeon hardware, and thus did not have this wooden block directly under the deck. Also, the block goes all the way back to the back wall - all 2" of it (that's wide). Your bolts are good, and you're all set. One final thing. On the external gudgeon plate, there is a "scratch mark" on one of the top sides. This is so you can match up the scratch mark with the "centering line" which you did when you first started the project. I actually used that mark when I first started, centered the gudgeon, and then drew a line around the perimeter of the gudgeon with a pencil. That way, when I was going through the bolting process, I could constantly keep the gudgeon on the center line and in place with where it should be on the back of the boat. Additionally, the windline.net instructions are very good when he describes "put your first bolt in, tighten it it up, but not all the way - read too hard". Doing it this way with prevent the gudgeon from flopping around as you go about the process. When you have all four bolts in and bolted up, you can go back and retighten them up all the way up the way you want to.

VESSEL REVIEW | Sinichka – Electric commuter boats designed for Russia’s Moskva River
A series of three new electric monohull commuter ferries have already begun operational sailings on the Moskva River in the Russian capital Moscow.
Built by Russian shipyard Emperium, sister vessels Sinichka , Filka , and Presnya – all named after rivers in Moscow – are being operated by the Moscow Department of Transport and Road Infrastructure Development (Moscow Deptrans). They are the first units of a planned fleet of 20 vessels that will serve the capital city and other nearby communities. The new ferry system will be the water transport system to be operated on the Moskva River in 16 years.
Each vessel has a welded aluminium hull, an LOA of 21 metres, a beam of 6.2 metres, a draught of only 1.4 metres, a displacement of 40 tonnes, and capacity for 80 passengers plus two crewmembers. Seating is available for 42 passengers on each ferry, and the main cabins are also fitted with USB charging ports, wifi connectivity, tables, toilets, and space for bicycles and scooters. The cabin layout can be rearranged to allow the operator to adjust the distances between the seats and to install armrests of varying widths.
An open upper deck is also accessible to passengers and is the only area on each ferry where smoking is allowed.
The ferries are all of modular construction with each ferry’s wheelhouse, main cabin, and other structural elements being built as complete, separate components. This enables the ferries to be easily dismantled for transport to anywhere in Russia by rail and then quickly re-assembled within seven days.
The ferries are also ice-capable. Recently completed operational trials on the Moskva showed that the vessels can also easily navigate under mild winter conditions with broken surface ice, though year-round operations are planned for the entire fleet.
The ferries are each fitted with 500kWh lithium iron phosphate battery packs that supply power to two 134kW motors. This configuration can deliver a maximum speed of 11.8 knots, a cruising speed of just under 10 knots, and a range of 150 kilometres.
Emperium said the transfer of rotation of electric motors to the propeller is carried out by direct drive. As a propulsion installation, a pulling rotary propeller-steering column with double screws is used. The installation of double pulling screws, with similar power, allows an operator to increase the efficiency of the propulsion system to deliver a slightly higher speed or to reduce energy consumption. This arrangement also provides the ferries with enhanced manoeuvrability necessary for navigating in close quarters.
The batteries themselves have projected service lives of 10 to 12 years and are fitted with safety features such as built-in fire extinguishers and gas vents. Quick-disconnect features allow the batteries to be easily removed for replacement or maintenance.
Some of our readers have expressed disquiet at our publication of reviews and articles describing new vessels from Russia. We at Baird Maritime can understand and sympathise with those views. However, despite the behaviour of the country’s leaders, we believe that the maritime world needs to learn of the latest developments in vessel design and construction there.

- First day: Red Square , Saint Basil’s Cathedral , Zariadye Park, Bolshoi Theatre , Kremlin
- Day 2: Cathedral of Christ the Savior, the former Krasny Oktyabr factory on Balchug Island, Gorky Park, Moscow State University (one of the Seven Sisters buildings ) and Sparrow Hill
As 2 days os really short, be sure to choose an accommodation in the best districts where to stay in Moscow .
Walking on Red Square in Moscow: one of the unmissable things to do in Moscow
Iconic place and one of the must-see places in Moscow and even in Russia! Besides, if there was only one place to visit in Moscow in 2 days, this place would then be Red Square, without hesitation. Therefore, starting the city tour with Red Square is ideal . Several buildings are on the square, but not all of them have to be visited. Check out my blog post about Moscow’s Red Square in detail to learn more and not miss anything.
Visiting Saint-Basil’s Cathedral inside
Even more emblematic than Moscow’s Red Square! Built in the middle of the 16th century under the orders of Tsar Ivan Le Terrible, this cathedral is one of the most beautiful monuments of Orthodox art, and definitely one of the unmissable places in Moscow. Visiting Saint-Basil’s Cathedral inside is one of the most beautiful things to do in Moscow!
- Visit estimate time : 1h30
- Entry ticket : 700 RUB. Tickets can be purchased on the cathedral’s official website 45 days before the tour.
- Audio guide (recommended): 500 RUB

Take a walk in Zariadye park: one of the coolest things to do in Moscow after visiting Red Square
Zaryadie Park is just a 10-minute walk from St. Basil’s Cathedral, so it’s easy to include in your itinerary if you’re going to visit Moscow in 2 days. From its heights, you can see the red walls of the Kremlin. But, the most impressive point of view is the platform which overlooks the Moskva river. A must see! And clearly one of the coolest things to do in Moscow!
- Open 24 hours a day
- Good to know! Park Zaryadye is also a place to visit in Moscow in winter. Find out more here: What to do in Moscow in winter?
See the Bolshoi Theatre and discover the Kuznetsky Most district
The Bolshoi Theatre is the most famous Russian theater in the world. The most economical way to see a presentation at the Bolshoi Theater is to take the tickets on the theater’s official website in advance, so here is our tutorial to help you: How to buy entrance tickets to the Bolshoi? In addition, several pedestrian or one-way streets
The Bolshoi Theater is the most famous Russian theater in the world. The most economical way to see a presentation at the Bolshoi Theater is to take the tickets on the theater’s official website in advance, so here is our tutorial to help you: How to buy tickets to the Bolshoi? In addition, several pedestrian or one-way streets are located north of the theater. It is therefore very pleasant to find them to leave the main axes of the megalopolis.
Visit the Moscow Kremlin
Visit Kremlin is on top of things to do in Moscow. A place of power for centuries, the Kremlin then shows us a whole different image when viewed from the inside. If you want to visit Moscow in 2 days, the Kremlin is certainly one of the must-see places in Moscow.
- Opening hours : Daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., except Thursday.
- See our blog post about visiting the Moscow Kremlin
Visit the Cathedral of Christ the Savior
This impressive Moscow Cathedral is the seat of the Russian Orthodox Church. It is a must see if you visit Moscow in 2 days and clearly one of the things to do in Moscow. The Cathedral of Christ the Savior was first built in 1883 in memory of Russia’s victory over Napoleon’s Grand Army. Then in 1931 Stalin ordered its destruction. It was then rebuilt again (identically) only in 2000.
- Where? Ulitsa Volkhonka 15. At the foot of the Kropotkinskaya metro station.
- Opening hours . Daily: 10: 00-17: 00, except Monday: 13: 00-17: 00
- Free entry (some closing restrictions, for example a short)
Good to know! In orthodox religious places, one must avoid excessively uncovered clothing. Women should cover their heads. After visiting the Cathedral of Christ the Savior, you can explore Bolotny Island and Gorky Park. This is one of the routes our guide to Moscow.
The old Krasny Oktyabr factory: one of the coolest things to do in Moscow
If you cross the Moskva River by a pedestrian bridge which is located just in front of the Cathedral of Christ the Savior, you will enjoy a beautiful view of the city and at the same time you can discover Balchug Island. Furthermore, if you want to visit Moscow in 2 days, you can include this island in your itinerary between the cathedral and Gorky park. Here is the old confectionery factory Krasny Oktyabr, which has gradually turned into a fashionable micro-district. There are then some elements of street art, cafes and restaurants and some Moscow bohemian side. At the end of the island you can see a gigantic 98-meter-high monument dedicated to the Russian reforming tsar Pierre The Great.
Good to know! You can find on this island are the trendiest nightclubs in Moscow. On weekends, there are taxi caps after midnight so there are so many people. On the other hand, if you go there in winter and during the day, the island is quite empty and less interesting to see.
Gorky Park is one of the TOP places to visit in Moscow, because it allows you to better understand the life of the locals and their rhythm. In fact, it’s a huge entertainment park. For example, in winter there is a giant ice rink and in summer – free dance or yoga lessons, sandy beaches for playing volleyball, an outdoor cinema. So, like the locals, have a Stakantchik (ice cream or cooked corn), and enjoy the atmosphere of the place: that’s one of the interesting things to do in Moscow to discover the city.
- Where? Krymsky Val 9. 20 minutes’ walk from Krasny Oktyabr, along the quays.
Sparrow Hill and Moscow State University
The Sparrow Hill, Vorobiovy Gori in Russian, is the highest point in Moscow. It is rather known to Russians, but less to travelers. A nice view on Moscow opens from the hill, and in particular on the Luzhniki Stadium. In addition, on the hill itself is the Moscow State University: an impressive skyscraper from the Soviet era.
- How to get there? By bus T7 (35 min) from Oktyaborskaya station, near Gorki Park. By metro (Vorobiovy Gorki station) + climb the hill on foot. On foot along the Moskva along the Gorky Park (1h30) + climb in funiculars.
Good to know! It is possible to cross the Moskva river by funicular. We actually tested it and it was pretty cool! That is one of our favorite things to do in Moscow!
What to do in Moscow in 3 days?
If you are going to visit Moscow in 3 days, it would be interesting to dive into the Soviet era which strongly marked the country and the city. After the Bolshevik Revolution, the capital was transferred from Saint Petersburg to Moscow, in order to mark the change of power. Moscow then became the world showcase for communist ideology. Here are the best things to do in Moscow for 3-day-trip!
VDNKh, visit Moscow of the Soviet era
VDNKh is a large exhibition center in the north of Moscow, where there are still several striking witnesses of the USSR. The most interesting are the Museum of Cosmonauts and the Statue of the Worker and the Kolkhozian , which will certainly impress you with its size!
GULAG History Museum
The explanations of the museum are very well done. We really have the feeling of going back in time. If you are going to visit Moscow in 3 days and you are interested in history and this subject in particular, I recommend this museum. Visit the GULAG History Museum is one of the most interesting things to do in Moscow.
Discover the Patriarche Pounds district
It’s a nice neighborhood in Moscow where you can come across rather affluent locals, but not necessarily very bling-bling. Take a walk in this area is really a cool thing to do in Moscow! In addition, the Ponds of Patriarch is one of the places of Bulgakov’s novel “Master and Margarita”. As this is an interesting area to see, we have included it in a walking tour of Moscow. The route ends at the Moscow Kremlin, which is very convenient, because you will be able to visit Moscow in 3 days by optimizing your trips.
What to visit in Moscow in 4 days: TOP things to do in Moscow in 4 days
If you want to visit Moscow in 3 days, you will already see a lot of things. On the other hand, if you stay one more day, you have plenty to do! The Novodevichy Convent, the Tchistie Proudy district and the Izmaylovo Kremlin are very good candidates for you, if you are going to visit Moscow in 4 days.
Visiting Novodevichy Convent in Moscow
The Novodevichy Convent is one of the most brilliant examples of Russian architecture, according to UNESCO. This beautiful complex was built in 1524 and today consists of the convent, but also of a cemetery whose status could be compared to that of Père-Lachaise in Paris. Visiting Novodevichy Convent is one of the great things to do in Moscow, if you want to go a little bit outside of the center!
Discovering Tchistye Proudy district
It’s one of the most popular areas of Moscow, with many cafes, restaurants and bars nearby. It is therefore a place to discover if you want to visit Moscow in 4 days. It is just as pleasant for a stroll as for the discovery of local life. For example, in winter the pond turns into an ice rink.
Visiting the Izmaylovo Kremlin, one of the coolest things to do in Moscow!
The Izmaylovo Kremlin is more of a tourist than a historic place. On the other hand, it is a pretty impressive place to discover, especially on weekends. Inside the Kremlin, there is a flea market where you can find a little bit of everything, but mostly good souvenirs to bring from Moscow. For example, chapka, traditional Russian scarves or matryoshka (Russian dolls). Add the Kremlin and the Izmaïlovo market to your itinerary if you are going to visit Moscow in 4 days, because it is a nice and very colorful place! Visiting the Izmailovo Kremlin is one of the things to do in Moscow, if you want to put colors in your Instagram account! 😉
In 4 days, we will have the opportunity to see several Moscow: Classic Moscow, Moscow of old Russia, Soviet Moscow and a little bit of the new Moscow. So what to visit in Moscow on the 5th day of travel?
What to visit in Moscow in 5 days?
Art lovers will be delighted to discover the Tretyakov Gallery and the Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts, while others will prefer to stroll along Arbat Street, see the buildings of Moskva-City or visit Bunker 42.
Admiring Russian art at Tretyakov Gallery
Founded in 1856 by an industrialist and great lover of art, the gallery has grown over the decades, and then bequeathed to the state. Today the collection includes more than 140,000 pieces, 15,000 of which are paintings. Visiting the Tretyakov Gallery is one of the things to do in Moscow if you want to discover Russian art!
- Where? Pereoulok Lavrouchinski 10. A 5-minute walk from Tretiakovskaya station
- Opening hours. Open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. until 9 p.m. Thursday and Friday. Closed on Mondays.
- Entry tickets. 500 RUB.
Visiting the Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts
The Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts presents the treasures of ancient Egypt, the paintings of Rembrandt and Cézanne, a fine collection of Impressionism.
- Where? Ulitsa Volkhonka 12
- Opening hours. Daily: 10: 00-20: 00, except Thursday: 11: 00-21: 00. Closed on Mondays. The boxes close an hour before closing.
- Entry tickets. The prices vary according to the collections from 300 to 750 RUB.
Walking on Arbat Street
All Russians know Rue Arbat. So, walking on Arbat street is one of the things to do in Moscow. However, after the years, little by little it became very touristy. This is a pedestrian street only. There are souvenir shops, restaurants and cafes there, but it is no longer the most authentic neighborhood in the city.
Seeing the buildings of Moskva-City (Moscow City)
Moskva-City is Moscow’s business center, much like Paris’s Defense district. The skyscrapers of Moskva-City are among the tallest in Europe: 373 meters high! Very nice place to see at dusk.
Good to know! You can admire a nice view of Moscow City from the docks of Tarasa Shevchenko. It’s especially beautiful in the evening with all the lights on.
Bunker 42, one of the most unusual things to do in Moscow
Bunker 42 is a secret military complex which was to be used by the Soviets in the event of a nuclear attack: a space of 7000 m² 65 meters underground!
- Where? 5 Kotelnitcheski Lane, 11.
- Prices. 2200 RUB per person
- Opening hours. Open daily from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.
- Restaurant inside. Original, but rather a tourist trap.
What to visit in Moscow in 6 days or more?
There are still so many places to see, because Moscow is a big megalopolis and there is always something exciting to do there. For example: the ancient Kolomenskoye village or the WINZAVOD contemporary art center .
If you are interested in history and want to see Russian cities on a rather “human scale”, it would certainly be interesting for you to discover the cities of the Golden Ring . For example, it is very easy to get to Sergey Posad from Moscow (less than 2 hours in train). Visiting the Golden Ring is one of the best things to do in Moscow if you are staying more than a 5-6 days.
There are still plenty of places to see in Moscow, however I did my best to list here the best things to do in Moscow, what to see in Moscow in one day, but also in 2, 3, 4 or 5 days in Moscow!
