Ratings and reviews
Location and contact, michelin guide's point of view.
I am not very experienced in fine dining, but highly interested in the technique behind. During our vacation in Roscoff I took the opportunity to dine in a Michelin star restaurant together with my better half, and since we both are huge fans of seafood... (which, sadly, is not easy to get here in Austria), "Le Brittanny's" menu was like a treasure map for us. We were not to be disappointed, since from the very first starter, the kitchen's greeting, we got wonderful and surprising combinations of tastes, presented by extremely friendly and competent waiters, including the young sommelier, who without doubt would have been able to inform in detail about the mineral contents of our bottled water, if I had asked him. The wine menu is exhaustive, but we stayed safe, with a very nice bottle of rosé from the Provence. Personally I liked the chef's tendency to combine Asian tastes with more traditional Breton seafood recipes, which brought a little acidic freshness here and there. One highlight of the menu for me was the royale de tourteau with its richness of coconut milk. The portion sizes were more than sufficient, if ordering a complete menu (we took the "saveurs" for 129€) you better have decent room in your stomach. Together with the medieval style of the dining room and its wonderful view over the Roscoff harbour and pittoresque seaside, the dinner at "Le Brittanny" is a highly memorable experience. More
This is a somewhat eclectic restaurant but it is also very, very good indeed. There is a Sino/Japanese flavour to the menu but these are well-incorporated into a menu that exhibits also a coastal location. As such you get Asian touches (the steamed bao-bun) and... the sea (the seaweed). The menu is imaginative and well-balanced. We opted for the 89 Euro option (there are also 129 and 189 Euro options, increasing in depth and extent as you go). That may seem pricey to some but when you consider all the various twiddly bits inbetween the courses it represents, we think, excellent value for money. Everything we had was well cooked and well presented. The flavours and textures were first class (but a caveat here, read on). Some were truly excellent, the odd one or two were sublime. But there wwere two discordant notes, for us. One of the palate cleansers at the dessert stage had three onion meringues (each the size of a one Euro coin). There was also a strip of sea weed (processed well and looking gorgeous). But they tasted, to us, odd and discordant. It didn't spoil anything nor detract from the experience and the pleasure. Service was to the usual high standard: professional, courteous, polite and friendly. There was no rush to get you in and out and everything was calm and unhurried. With a view over the bay and harbour it was a true delight. We paid just under 200 Euros which came in when we got the credit bill at about £180. This was, as I say, great value for money given the food, the atmosphere and the service. Did we enjoy it? Oh you bet. Would we go back? In a heartbeat. More
What a great place to stay after 18 months of self isolation . Service impeccable food superb and everything designed to make you feel safe . We are so glad we came back couldn t have chosen anywhere better
Even at the best restaurants, things sometimes go wrong. You forget to ask a customer if he wants an aperitif; when he asks for one, you forget to send the wine waiter. Staff lay the wrong cutlery. And then do it again. Something goes wrong... with a starter and instead of adjusting your timings you end up serving the main courses almost as the starter plates are taken away and before there is cutlery on the table. All these things are forgiveable, of course, provided the restaurant at least appears apologetic. Sadly, at the Brittany, I fear that it is hard for them to accept they are at fault. This was perhaps most cogently demonstrated when the staff responded to my suggestion that we were hardly ready for our main courses (having just finished our starters) by saying 'but the food is ready'. And repeating that when I replied 'but we are not'. Maybe all this amateurish front-of-house performance would have mattered less if the chef had lived up to expectations, but what food we ate on our recent visit also suggested problems. To be fair, the main courses that we didn't eat looked interesting, particularly the cochon. But the starters were so bad that we barely touched them - and our suggestions that we hadn't liked them just seemed to baffle the maitre d'. The langoustines were so poorly cooked that we felt sorry for them. The spider crab dish with a salmis of pigeon was really a pigeon dish with a very ungenerous smattering of spider crab - a combination that didn't really add anything to either ingredient. Perhaps the saddest thing was the sense that they felt we should simply eat and enjoy the food as they presented it and when they chose to present it. Although I sensed a grudging acceptance that something had gone wrong with their timings, there was no real interest in trying to address our unhappiness with the starters, and whether the restaurant agreed with our view that customers have a right to expect a reasonable pause between courses, surely they would have preferred happy customers? Really good restaurants go out of their way to remedy problems that arise - and we'd had a succession of problems from the moment we sat down, as even the maitre d' accepted. Whatever the case, I can't recall many Michelin starred restaurants that have been such an anti-climax, and I guess I've eaten at rather a lot over the years. I usually find Michelin's assessments very reliable. And yes, things can go wrong and maybe we were the exceptions, with poor service allied to a problem in the kitchen with our dishes - but why didn't they simply admit to this and suggest a way forward? What can I say that's positive? Well, it's a good and fairly priced wine list with some great bottles (eg Roulot, Colin, Fontaine-Gagnard) and the sommelier certainly knows his stuff. The room is very attractive, with great views. Staff smiled a lot and seemed friendly, which only added to our sense of disappointment at the way they handled our difficulties. Only a one out of five performance then. But looking at other reviews, I guess we were the exception to the rule? More
On a one night stay in Roscoff during the high season we were lucky enough to find, at the last minute, a room at the Brittany & Spa and a table for dinner at the restaurant. The hotel review is submitted separately. The chef here... is a genius! He present our entire meal with creativity, originality and abundant taste while paying an honest tribute to the ingredients of the region. For example, we had artichokes, crab, buckwheat flour. All are items that have very specific tastes and consistencies. Every plate delivered surprising contrasts in tastes and textures while ensuring satisfaction. Bravo chef!! The entire team provided intuitive and non-intrusive service. A special call-out to the sommelier that paired a wine for us that was well, well below our budget but delivered well, well above our expectations. Brittany is quite a distance from our home in Switzerland but like the tide we will be pulled back here again and again. Merci à tous!! More

This is the restaurant in the hotel Le Brittany. Food was perfect. Service was wonderful. View was fabulous. It was expensive though
We stayed overnight pre-ferry and whilst the hotel provided as expected it was not a particularly enchanting stay. Our rooms were average, the greeting was average and the hotel's decor rather uninspiring. The restaurant has a Michelin star although on this occasion we chose not... to use it; however in the past we have enjoyed the food but found the whole eating experience way too sombre. This hotel will, I'm sure, fulfil the needs of many but for us it needs to have a major uplift in its atmosphere before we would stay again. It did not strike us as a happy hotel! Having said that it is a great location, an interesting building, and serves a worthy purpose for travellers. More

We had a really nice meal on a sunny evening overlooking the bay. The food is what you would expect for a Michelin star restaurant - complex, entertaining and very enjoyable. The room was full and had a nice ambience. The restaurant staff were friendly... and very knowledgeable about the food and wine. The only slight annoyance when we arrived was that the restaurant reception is also the hotel reception and we waited for some time while the single member of staff finished his long telephone conversation. He gave no indication that he was even aware of our presence. More

First of all, I would rate this one of the top five fine-dining meals I've had. Better, certainly, than Taillevent (3 Michelin stars at the time). Every course was a success. The chef knows how to use seasonal and local products in a sophisticated maner.... Every aspect of our meal was top-notch. The service, the atmosphere, and above all, the food. The room itself is beautiful: exposed beams with an uninterrupted view of the harbor of Roscoff at sunset. The staff were courteous, attentive without being overbearing, knowledgeable, professional, and - very important in my opinion - happy to be doing their jobs; they were also completely comfortable dealing with a mostly non-francophone table. We were not the only anglophones there by any means, and were not under-dressed in khakis and shirt sleeves. Every course was a success. The chef knows how to use seasonal and local products in a sophisticated manner. We had several moments where everyone just stopped talking and had that collective recognition that we had put something in our mouths that was not quite of this earth. There was at least one course that, in my opinion, would be banned in 49 of the 50 States, the exception being Nevada. On paper, this looks very pricey, but our tasting menu, "tout compris" was 80 Euro per head. It includes, again on paper, mise en bouche, entree, 2nd course, and dessert, along with water, coffee, two glasses of wine, and a glass of champagne. The wines are paired to the entree and 2nd course; ours were excellent choices. That's already pretty good for a starred restaurant. But, as they say on TV, wait, there's more. We actually got an amuse bouche before the miss en bouche, a plate of petit fours with coffee, and chocolates. So, at current Euro/Dollar exchange rates, that's $108 per person. I'd consider that excellent value for money. I've certainly paid more for dinners that weren't anything like as good. If there's anyway to fit this into your budget while in the area, you won't regret doing so. More
Great food for a reasonable price. The menu at 48 euros was excellent. Exhaustive wine list. The restaurant is very well decorated. Excellent presentation as you would expect for a Michelin star restaurant.
We had an excellent meal for a very reasonable price. We completely agree about the artichoke dessert which is really different and worth trying for a change. The dining room is spacious, with lovely views.Service is certainly effective but smiles are scarce...
We chose here because of the promise of a food and wine experience to remember. We were not disappointed.
We dined twice and enjoyed the food. The ambience is fine with superb views across the sea to the island of Batz. Menus are interesting, with some, for our taste, exotic elements. Service was good with the occasional French unhelpfulness, but it all makes life... interesting and is relatively trivial. More
My husband stayed one night at the Hotel Le Brittany and therefore ate at The Yachtman restaurant. OMG. Here we are, a couple of tourists in our tourist clothes as we walk into a packed, formal restaurant of guests whose age had to be anywhere... from 80 to 100 (I should note we're just a 'bit' younger!). The wait staff were extremely observant, efficient and some of them even helped us translate the menu. While I cannot complain about the quality of the food - it was VERY good - this restaurant is like stepping into a time warp back to 1970's France or what you might expect from Fawlty Towers. People serving you bread with silver utensils and white gloves, salt crusted fish served whole at your table, where it's decrusted and deboned in front of you, and brandies poured from glass bottles with necks that were at least two feet long. Oh so weird! Way too over the top for us. Oh, and it was expensive! You definitely pay for the service and the food at this restaurant! I would say though, that the maitre de made us feel very welcome despite us looking like the tacky tourists we were; that made the evening way more bearable! More
The food is very nice, however expect to pay for it! Lots of choice with both food and drink. Staff are good and speak English. The ambience is also great with excellent views out over the sea.
