Marine Tankless Water Heaters

Fellow Sailors, Does anyone have practical experience with or knowledge of the use of marine tankless water heaters? I'm a Great Lakes sailor and have no pressing need to have hot water while underway, but would like to have it in port. I've been looking at an EEMAX Marine Electric Tankless Water Heater. Granuaile, there's a recent thread in the Gear & Maintainance forum on this topic, though no one really addresses the electric ones. I was looking into them, but it seems they don't make the water that much hotter than what is in the water tank, judging by the literature. They cite x number of degrees above the ambient temp of the tank at 1gpm.

I had one installed on a Pacific Seacraft Orion back in the late 80's. It was a very attractive Webasto stainless unit that mounted in the cabin on a bulkhead. It ran on propane and had a very nice stainless chimney that went up through the cabin house. It worked great for hot showers and hot water in galley and easily got the water hot enough to burn the skin if not careful -- you had to mix the output with cold water and get it flowing just right before hopping in. Then there were some press reports about a very well known woman sailor who died from carbon monoxide from such a unit -- I think I recall that hers was mounted in a small head. Seems like a CO-detector could have prevented her death, but I never saw much advertising for instant hot water heaters for boats after that. I sold that boat a couple of years later, and my next boat was a 37 which has a regular hot water heater system.

Tankless hot water heaters

I live in a new house (<5 years) in a development where a lot of corners were cut by the builder. One of those corners was installing an undersized electric water heater right next to a gas fired furnace. This water heater starts running out of hot water towards the end of my shower in the morning. My wife and I both take showers (separately) at the same time each morning. Hers is fairly short and mine if kinda long as I shave in there. Should my current water heater suffer an untimely death I am really interested in a gas tankless heater but I have a couple questions. First is would a tankless unit be able to handle two showers being taken at the same time? I've heard that could be an issue. Secondly, approximately how much do these things cost? If I got a tank-type heater it would be a gas power-vent model so I'm already getting kinda pricey.

Re: Tankless hot water heaters The tankless could supply the water if sized properly. The cost is anywhere for $2000-$3500. The unts cost over $1000 plus installation.

Re: Tankless hot water heaters Yes, a tankless, when sized properly will support two simultaneous showers. The ones you get at HD will not. HD can't sell anything over 199,000 BTU since anything above that requires a licensed contractor install. Your primary concern will be the size of your gas line. A 199,000 BTU unit requires at least a 3/4" gas line and if you don't have that you can't do it. THe common 50 gal water heater uses a 1/2" gas line. You also need to ensure that the vent pipe that you use is stainless steel. The easiest ones to install are those that are mounted outside since venting is less of a problem.

There's a large HVAC shop close to my house and I fully believe in supporting the local economy especially right now. However, I'm seriously doubting I have a 3/4" gas line. It doesn't look to be that big. The only thing I have that is gas is my furnace. I'm also concerned about the venting. I don't have a fireplace or a chimney. My furnace vents outside via a PVC pipe. Is this at all feasible? Or am I better off just going with a regular gas tank unit?  

Re: Tankless hot water heaters Your furnace is a direct vent furnace. You cannot vent a tankless water heater by combining the two. You'll need a plumber not a HVAC person. Decent units start around 1500.00 and work up from there. Your gas meter will determine the maximum size of your gas line. I've had cases where I had to have the meter changed but the house had several gas applicances. It can cost between 3 and 5 thousand to have one installed properly which means getting the results that you expect and 40% more to compensate for incomint water temp swings between the seasons. Here's a tip, stay away from Bosch systems. Nothing but trouble.

Re: Tankless hot water heaters Was looking into some real neat systems - one where they have a gauge at each water faucet and you can set the temp you want ... it will heat your water accordingly for each faucet! These can be controlled remotely or wired in. Too much money for the application I was looking into at the time, but something I logged away for later thought.

Re: Tankless hot water heaters Have you bothered to check to see where the temperature is set on your current water heater. If some has been trying to save a little bit of gas and turned down below 120 degrees, turn it up a little bit at a time until get the hot water needed for both showers. I have a gas water heater at one end of the house and an undercounter electric at the other end and we have never had a problem with enough hot water w/5 of living us (4 girls and me) in the house. I have checked on the tankless and like everyone is saying, they are expensive. My son-in-law and daughter have one and they like it, but was shocked at the price when installed.

Re: Tankless hot water heaters A 50 gal 5 year water heater will cost $1200.00 installed. Tankless water heaters have been lasting 25 years on average. Your homes plumbing makes up 40% of it's value on average. Add in a re-circ system and you'll save thousand of gallons of water also.

Those come from the factory setting in the medium on the two thermostats next to each heating element. Here is what you need to do. 1) unplug the unit or turn off the 220V circuit braker on your main panel marked: hot water tank. 2} Remove the two covers on the front of the tank held by two screws. 3) Adjust the thermostats with a regular screwdriver to about 75% 4) Put the small piece of insulation back and replace the covers with screws. 5) Take showers run the dishwasher and the washing machine 6} If still running out of hot water than repeat the previous steps but all the way to the 100% hottest setting. If still prematurely running out hot water replace it. If you have extra cash get the tankless type.

Re: Tankless hot water heaters My parents and I booth have Bosch Agua Star Tankless Units. We purchased them about 10 years ago. They were around $500 or so back then (I think the new models are around $650). They were one of the first units I could get in this neck of the woods. I switched due to hard water. The design of the tankless has no standing water, so no deposits. The deposits would kill our old water heaters after 5 to 8 years. These units are some of the smaller ones. My parents are on city water, and with their constant pressure they can get two showers going at once, we are on well water, and sometimes as the as the pressure drops the hot water flow is to small for 2 good showers. Even with this inconvenience we LOVE our tankless. The endless hot water is GREAT, they are very efficient. The newer units can handle a higher flow rate and would be even better. The other benefit, is they are very small. A number of the manufactures even have units that mount in an exterior wall and thus take up no inside square footage at all. These outside units are not available up north, due to extreme cold. Just my thoughts, Dave BTW, both my dad and myself installed these units ourselves, just like regular tank units.

Thermostats on hot water tanks are not very precise. The maximum output temp at the faucet, that is is recommended by any competent authority, is ~ 140 F. That should be your target. The manufacturer recommends adjusting it to your needs up to the hottest setting if you want it that way. All electric units have a built in auto safety shut off with reset button right by the adjusting screw, in case the water gets too hot. Tankless Water Heater

I'm interested in installing an ELECTRIC tankless water heater in my 1986 Hunter 31. I'm at dock every night and don't need hot water on the lake for my (mostly) day sails. Any experience either pro or con? Thanks! Brad

No marine experience, but as a home inspector I sometimes run into electric tankless heaters and find they rarely perform adequately for bathing purposes. If you are planning to use it for low-demand use (washing hands, dishes, etc.), then a 110V on-demand heater might suffice. For showering, I would be surprised if it could supply enough volume to be satisfactory. In any case, it would take a very hefty extension cord since the longer the run, the bigger the conductors must be. Keep in mind that the temperature of the fresh water supply will have a considerable impact on the performance of the unit. This is likely the reason that most marine water heaters are "recovery" type where water is kept hot in quantity (5 gallons or more), used, then allowed to recover.

The above info is good info. I am familiar with two types of on demand water heaters. One was popular on boats manufactured in Canada powered by propane gas. It had to be installed properly and more importantly vented properly. The other was electric. Both had water that entered through the heaters and heated on demand. And, the temperature of the water in the tank had bearing on what temp the hot water expelled. I prefer the tank type which is powered via shore power or the engine via the hot water system.

A cold shower is a great way to wake up in the morning. However, it's not always a wake-up call we get by choice. Running out of hot water in the middle of your shower can be a startling way to begin your day. Luckily, there is one way to ensure you never run out of hot water again. 

Traditional water heaters hold water in big, bulky tanks that take up a lot of space in your house. HGTV's Dave Marrs ran into this beastly problem on an episode of " Fixer to Fabulous " when the client wanted to add a sink to their laundry room. 

Dave's solution? A tankless water heater. 

Trading out the big water tank for a small tankless heater provided Dave with the extra space needed to make the client's wishes come true. 

Tankless water heaters have numerous benefits over traditional storage tank heaters. The size is a major one — they're about the size of a small suitcase and hang on the wall. Constant hot water is another notable bonus. Using either gas or electricity, they instantly heat water as it passes through, providing an endless supply of hot water.

Tankless heaters are also significantly more energy efficient. According to the Department of Energy , homes that use 41 gallons or less of water daily can be 24% to 34% more energy efficient than ones using storage tank heaters and up to 50% if you install multiple heaters. 

While tankless heaters are often more expensive to buy and install, they also last longer. According to Forbes , most tankless heaters cost between a couple hundred and a couple thousand dollars, with the average heater costing around $800. Most traditional tank heaters are in the $600 to $800 range. Installation costs are also slightly higher for tankless heaters. 

However, gas tankless heaters can last over 20 years and can often be repaired to last even longer. Electric tankless heaters typically last around 10 years but are less expensive than their gas counterparts. Meanwhile, storage tank heaters tend to last between eight and 15 years . 

Even though tankless heaters are more expensive to buy, the savings on your energy bill and their longer lifespan mean they save you money in the long run. 

Many of the reasons that tankless heaters are likely a better option for you are the same reasons they're good for the environment. 

Anytime a product lasts longer, fewer things are sent to a landfill. Instead of trashing a giant tank every eight to 15 years, you're only getting rid of a small suitcase-sized panel every 20 years or so. It also means fewer resources are needed to produce water heaters, which reduces the need for dirty energy sources like oil , coal , and gas . 

Electric tankless heaters also eliminate the need for toxic natural gas , which is primarily methane — a leading cause of our planet's overheating.

Mount the gas water heater vertically against the wall or other non-flammable surface using the included mounting kits.

Water connection

Attach the shower set (supplied) to the hot water outlet and the water hose to the water inlet.

Does an electric water heater require a disconnect?

When someone is repairing an electric water heater, they need to be assured that the electricity stays off while they are handling wiring and connections that could shock or kill if the circuit were to suddenly become “live.” So the building code addresses this safety issue by providing several choices of solutions that make the means of disconnecting the circuit either within sight or under the exclusive control of the person working on the water heater. 

    Here are the four options:

1) Panel within sight  - If the main electric panel or a subpanel that serves the water heater is within sight, a second means of disconnect is not necessary. So a water heater that is in a garage or utility room with a direct sightline to the nearby panel serving it would be acceptable.

2) Pull disconnect or circuit breaker panel within sight - This is the solution we see most often in new construction.

4) Lockout device at panel   - This is a metal gizmo that attaches permanently around the circuit breaker for the water heater in the electric panel, and is used when the panel is not within sight of the water heater. It has a hasp with a hole in it that accepts a small padlock, and allows the circuit breaker to literally be locked into the off position. Only a permanently installed lockout device is acceptable. 

    Prior to the 2017 edition of the National Electric Code, appliances rated at not over 300 volt amps (watts) or not over 1/8 hp motor were required to have a disconnect [NEC 422.31(a)], but it was not clear that it must be within sight if not lockable. The 2017 edition, however, added “where the switch or circuit breaker is within sight from the appliance” to the citation to clarify the intent.

Beware of ‘Tankless’ LPG Water Heaters

The availability of relatively inexpensive tankless LPG hot water heaters has apparently convinced some owners of older boats (and some newer ones) that going tankless is a smart way to save space and money. They’d be wrong. The least expensive LPG versions are designed for outdoor use, and even those designed for indoor use are not intended for use on a boat. We are talking specifically about LPG heaters — not electric.

Tankless propane water heaters carry serious risk of causing carbon-monoxide poisoning or oxygen depletion when mounted in a tight or sealed space. Because a boat is more tightly sealed than a shoreside home, the carbon monoxide is more likely to become trapped. Boater deaths have been attributed to tankless water heaters, and several brands have been recalled over the years-among them Wolter Water Heater, Paloma, and Rheem-Rudd-because they posed a carbon-monoxide poisoning hazard.

That said, you will find tankless propane water heaters on some production boats, but it is buyer beware, in our opinion. Where you mount the heater, how it is installed, and how it is vented are of critical importance. We’ve heard of boat owners mounting them successfully in vented spaces such as cockpit lazarettes, galleys, and anchor lockers, and many install them with heat shields. For extra precaution, you could run the water heater on a propane system separate from your stove, and rig it with a water solenoid that opens when the propane solenoid opens so the propane wont flow unless there is water flowing.

If you decide to install the tankless water heater despite the risks, you should first be sure that your heater hasn’t been recalled. We also recommend investing in a quality carbon monoxide detector like the Fireboy/Xintex, ( PS, December 2005 ), and always keeping a hatch open in the shower when using the heater. They are absolutely excellent to use outside for a cockpit or stern step shower. I mount mine on the rail next to my BBQ. Its about the same risk as an outside propane BBQ. My wife will not sail without a hot shower at night, a shower in the cockpit is an adventure and saves filling the cabin with humidity.

When to Get a Tankless Water Heater (and When Not To)

I n so many ways, we’re living in the future. We have wireless internet, artificial intelligence, and holographic KISS concerts . Technology has advanced so fast it’s often difficult to keep up—as soon as you’ve mastered one new paradigm, a dozen others have popped up while you weren’t paying attention.

But not everything in our lives has gotten better—or even changed that much. Your standard water heater , for example, is kind of primitive: It’s a tank of water with a fire underneath, or electric heating elements inside the tank. It’s not terribly complicated or that far removed from a bucket suspended over a fire.

There is a more advanced, modern option: The tankless water heater , aka a “demand” water heater. These fixtures eschew the tank altogether, heating water on demand. Not only are they more energy efficient by as much as 34% , they offer the tantalizing possibility of infinite hot water—and infinitely long hot showers. Despite these benefits, however, a tankless water heater won’t work for everyone or every living situation.

Tankless water heaters can supply infinite hot water in the sense that they don’t rely on a set amount of stored, heated water. But they’re not magic—they can only heat up so much water so fast. Every tankless water heater has a flow rate measured as gallons per minute (gpm), and every fixture that provides hot water (faucets, showers, dishwashers, laundry) has a flow rate as well. Your tankless water heater has to have a flow rate sufficient to supply hot water to all the fixtures simultaneously.

For example, if your family frequently has someone showering (2 gpm) while the washing machine (3 gpm) and dishwasher (2 gpm) are both running, your tankless water heater will need to provide at least 7 gpm. A heater with a higher flow rate will come with a higher price tag—and if you have moments when your hot water usage spikes beyond the normal rate, your tankless water heater might not be able to keep up.

Another factor affecting tankless water heater performance is the temperature rise. This is the difference between the temperature of the water when it enters your home through the pipes and the temperature you want your hot water to be. If your groundwater is 50ºF (10ºC) and you want your hot water to be 120ºF (49ºC), you need a rise of 70ºF (39ºC). If the water temperature coming in drops a few degrees for any reason, your tankless water heater might struggle to provide water that’s hot enough for your needs, especially if you use a lot of appliances and fixtures simultaneously.

That means if you have a large family or use a lot of hot water in your house, a tankless water heater might not be the best choice even if you calculate its capacity carefully. And since tankless models don’t have a stored supply of water and rely on constant intake, any mineral buildup in the pipes or drop in water pressure to your home might result in lukewarm water or not enough hot water to go around. A storage water heater will eventually fill up even with reduced water pressure, and will eventually heat water of any temperature to the desired setting. But if your hot water usage rarely spikes and the temperature rise is manageable, a tankless unit should work well.

Although tankless water heaters are smaller than traditional tank heaters (and you can buy compact units designed for smaller spaces), that doesn’t mean you can necessarily fit one in your existing mechanical space. Depending on the capacity you need, if you have a tight mechanical room or area you might not be able to squeeze one in, leaving you with the option of installing it outside the house or in plain view somewhere else in the house. I personally know someone who had to have theirs installed in their living room, so now they have a huge unit with pipes running everywhere right in the middle of their home. And choosing a more compact unit might mean sacrificing capacity, leaving you with chronically lukewarm water.

It’s best to consult with your plumber or contractor to make sure they can fit a tankless water heater into your home before you commit to one. If not, but you can tolerate having it exposed to guests or mounted outdoors, then a tankless unit will still work for you.

A final consideration with tankless water heaters is the return on investment. Because of their superior energy efficiency, tankless water heaters are often promoted as wise investments—and you will get your money back, eventually. Tankless water heaters can last 20 years or more (more than double the lifespan of a typical storage water heater), and they can save an average family of four about $100 a year on energy bills. If your tankless water heater lasts 20 years, you’ll save $2,000 over its lifetime. The cost of installing one of these units ranges between $1,500 and $3,200 (including labor), so you might get all or at least most of your money back.

But if you’re not planning to stay in your home that long, the investment might not pay off. If you’re planning to sell your home in a few years, a tankless water heater might appeal to some potential buyers, but there’s no data to support the idea that a tankless water heater significantly affects home value one way or another. On the other hand, if you’re in your forever home or have no plans to move any time soon, the combination of infinite hot water and energy efficiency will pay off.

Average Groundwater Temperatures for the Cities in Idaho

Temperature is important to consider when dealing with hard water because calcium dissolves more easily in cold water. Most substances that dissolve in water, such as sugar, do not behave in this manner. It is common knowledge that you can dissolve more sugar in hot water than cold. Calcium has the opposite effect: the hotter the water, the less calcium it can dissolve. If your water source is deep in the earth (higher pressure also contributes to increased calcium solubility) and the groundwater is very cold, you can almost certainly expect hard water. Groundwater is so hard in some areas that water utilities must blend it with surface water to reduce the hardness. Another important reason to know your average groundwater temperatures is if you are trying to determine which tankless water heater to purchase. The reason for this is because in colder climates the groundwater starting temperature is colder than in warmer climates. This causes the tankless water heater to work harder to increase the water temperature in colder climates, which in turn causes the flow rate to decrease in parallel. For example, if the starting water temperature is 52°F and you need to raise the water temperature to 110°F. Then your tankless water heater must be able to raise the temperature of the water by 58°F while still providing adequate flow to support the fixtures you wish to run at the same time.

How Flow Rates are Affected by Temperature

In the example below, you can see the impact that temperature has on flow rates. This example is based on a tankless water heater that has a flow rate rated for 8 GPM.

Based on the corresponding flow rates for each appliance that are listed. A tankless water heater that is rated with a flow rate of 8 GPM (gallons per minute) is capable of running these items at the same time in regions with an average groundwater

temperature of 72°F.
