Motor Yacht

Pelorus is a 115m motor yacht custom built by Lurssen Yachts in 2003. The mega yacht’s elegant exterior lines are the work of Tim Heywood. She features interior design by Terence Disdale.

Motor yacht Pelorus has a steel hull and aluminium superstructure. With a generous beam of 17.2m, she has a spacious interior with room for up to 22 guests and 42 crew members.

In 2007 Pelorus emerged from a refit carried out by Blohm + Voss shipyard, which saw the addition of a second helicopter pad, new paint and zero-speed stabilizers.

The mega yacht also has a large pool, Jacuzzi, and numerous toys and tender on board.

Pelorus can reach a top speed of 20 knots and cruises comfortably at 18 knots. She is equipped for long-distance cruising, with a range of 6000 nautical miles at 16 knots.

In 2018 Pelorus underwent a major refit by Kusch Yachts.

The PELORUS yacht is named after the Greek word “vast” because she is one of the largest boats in the world. 

Lurssen built the multi-award-winning 115m/377’4″ motor yacht ‘Pelorus’ at their Bremen shipyard in Germany.

Her interior was designed by Terence Disdale , an English design studio, and she was delivered to her owner in May 2003.

Tim Heywood Design created the exterior design for this luxury yacht, which was recently refurbished in 2007.

The PELORUS yacht is designed to comfortably accommodate up to 18 guests in nine suites, comprising two VIP cabins and an additional 41 crew in 20 rooms, to ensure a relaxed luxury yacht experience. 

PELORUS is currently sailing under the Cayman Islands flag, the second most popular superyacht flag state.

Terence Disdale was in charge of her design, and he developed an interior that embraced the relaxed and informal ambiance of a beachside villa.

The PELORUS yacht is a highly private yacht, and very little information is known about her interior or other particular details from aboard.

The PELORUS yacht has many amenities including two helicopter landing pads, a swimming pool with artificial current, a spa pool, and an owner’s suite with 180-degree panoramic views that open to a private deck.

She is built with stunning engineering technology and features high-caliber systems, including the bowthruster, being provided with a backup.

At the same time, the control of all propulsion units is centralized in a ‘Lipstick’ that allows the yacht to be maneuvered accurately with a single joystick.

One of the most distinctive features of this luxurious mega yacht is the ‘lido’ on the top deck, which has two swimming pools and a vast sea-level platform that is created once the transom is opened.

This location gives good access to the water and an excellent ‘beach area’ where visitors may relax and enjoy the various water toys available.

Aside from that, the PELORUS superyacht includes two helicopter pads for the convenience of its owner and visitors.

Additionally, the superyacht is equipped with a spacious pool, a jacuzzi, a variety of toys, and a tender.

The yacht was built with a steel hull and aluminum superstructure with a 17.2-meter beam. She has ranked the 48th largest yacht in the world with a length of 377 feet 3 inches or 115 meters and a gross tonnage of 5317.0 GT

She can reach a top speed of 20 knots, and her cruising speed is 18.0 knots for a relaxing experience.

Her maximum cruising range is 6000.0 nautical miles for long-distance cruising, with her power coming from two 5,500-hp Wärtsilä 12v 26 engines . 

The PELORUS yacht was bought for US $200 million and has an annual running cost of $15-20 million.

A destination herself, Pelorus’ vast interior volume provides unequalled levels of comfort and visual delight from Terry Disdale’s eclectic palette of naturals. A WONDER OF CONTEMporary shapes, Pelorus is retro in her proportions – her long open decks more reminiscent of sleek ocean liners of the 1930s and ’40s than the profiles of modern 300-foot-plus yachts. Pelorus, says Heywood, could have had more decks, more cabins and salons, but that isn’t the point. A certain lifestyle designed for relaxation is. Pelorus offers blissful accommodations for 22 in the owner’s party, plus five staff cabins and quarters for up to 40 crew. The enormous appeal of the self-contained resort concept is obvious in the fact that the yacht ’s original owner received six offers on the yacht before she was completed. One of those offers, as the saying goes, couldn’t be refused and might even have been predicted since it came from a person who had once purchased the original owner’s previous boat, 162-foot Sussurro. It’s no coincidence that Terry Disdale designed the interiors of both. While the boat appears casual, she delivers a level of service as far above first class as clouds are above the panorama lounge. A sophisticated system of stairs, passageways, escape routes and pantry or staging areas allow crew or staff to appear in a room as if by magic rather than as if they had just run the length of a football field. The layout of Pelorus is fresh, even novel in large yacht design. Accommodations are not clustered on a single lower deck; instead they are strategically placed through four decks to afford greater privacy to the owner, VIPs and visiting families. 10 cool facts about 97m Lürssen superyacht Carinthia VII

When Tim Heywood's preliminary sketches of 114.5-metre Pelorus  were shown to a prospective Lürssen client, the client was taken with the yacht's bold profile and distinctive lines. In 2002, those sketches sprang to life as 97.2 metre Carinthia VII . BOAT rediscovers 10 of the coolest facts about one of his most legendary creations ahead of her debut at this year's Monaco Yacht Show. 

1. She was built for a serial yacht owner

Carinthia VII follows is the last in a long line of yachts named Carinthia, commissioned for department store magnate Helmut Horten and his wife Heidi. The first four yachts in the series were smaller, but the fifth was a 67.85 metre, also built by Lürssen , which was tragically lost at sea during her maiden voyage from Greece. The sixth Carinthia VI had better fortunes — the 70.7 metre was delivered in 1973 and used by Horten until his death, following which she was sold and renamed The One . Carinthia VII is the only yacht in the Carinthia line to be commissioned by Heidi alone.

2. The hull colour inspired the name "Carinthia Blue"

The unique blue hull colour was later marketed as "Carinthia Blue" by manufacturers Awlgrip. The paint colour was a key component of Hewyood's exterior vision, helping to create a powerful silhouette that has the appearance of being unbroken by the black windows.

3. Her interiors are by Ellerhorst and Kreuter

The yacht's interior styling has been seldom seen until now. Austrian studio Ellerhorst and Kreuter helmed the design, and has used a mix of different palettes and themes across her spaces. For example, the dining area is tropical and almost flamboyant, whereas the main saloon is pared-back, with coffee-and-cream tones offset by mint green. The design team had a volume of 3,643 gross tonnes spread over six decks, plus a beam of 16.6 metres to work with. Accommodation is for 14 guests in eight cabins.

4. She marked the fourth-largest yacht sale of 2022

Carinthia VII was sold in September 2022, with the sale announced just days before she was due to make her appearance at the Monaco Yacht Show. Antoine Larricq and Stuart Larsen at Fraser represented the seller, with Ralph de Joode from RYacht Monaco introducing the buyer. She was listed for sale in April and had a last known asking price of €95,000,000. Now under new ownership the yacht has been spotted at Blohm + Voss for refit works.

5. She was the largest yacht designed by Tim Heywood at the time of her delivery

Tim Heywood 's initial designs for Carinthia VII were unique; the yacht had a soaring forebody and a sheerline that sweeps downwards towards the stern. However, those characteristics were initially designed for Pelorus. It was only because Carinthia VII was several metres shorter that she was built first, with Pelorus hitting the water the next year with a few key changes. 

6. She has an enormous onboard spa

The yacht's spa zone has been conceived as a fully-equipped wellness area on the water, with an unfolding sea terrace that allows direct access from the water from the gym area. As well as a spacious sauna, the yacht also has a steam-style shower room and a mosaic-clad plunge pool.

7. Her windows are bulletproof

One of the security features of this yacht is her bulletproof windows. As well as being practical, the windows also let in plenty of light and contribute to an airy feeling throughout the yacht.

8. Her helipad can accommodate a 5-tonne helicopter

The yacht has a number of high-calibre amenities including a touch-and-go helipad on the bow. Other highlights include a sundeck Jacuzzi and numerous dedicated spaces to lounge across her decks.

9. She was Lürssen's second-largest yacht at the time of her delivery

German yacht giant Lürssen now has 25 yachts over 100 metres in its fleet, but at the time of Carinthia VII 's delivery, she was its second-largest build, surpassed only by 139.3m Al Salamah , built in 1999.

10. She is the 66th largest yacht in the world in terms of length

In terms of LOA, Carinthia VII ranks somewhere around 66th place (depending on whether you factor in superyacht vessels). At the time of her delivery, she was around the 20th largest.
