Do I need the eBook to build this cool rc sailboat?

No you don't. The book is designed for the newcomer to model yacht building. The book does make it a much simpler process with every detail figured out and covered in the book. Seasoned builders can simply have a go with the free plans.

Are the plans really free?

Yes all the plans are free to download and use as you see fit. The most comprehensive plans are the RS750 A1 full size.

Are there CAD files or 3D files?

Yes there is a 3D dxf file inside a zip file that you can download for free and use how you want. Some people use this in CAD programs or in 3D modelling programmes to great effect. Look under Racing Sparrow 750 plans on this page. An STL file for 3D printing is in the pipelines. Email me if you want a copy.

While we think 3D printing is great, we believe old-skool strip planking balsa is a wonderfully simple way to make a very lightweight boat with excellent longitudinal strength and beauty.

What the builders and sailors say:

Being a complete novice, I purchased your book a couple of years ago and built two racing sparrows. Building on this experience I then went on to build, from scratch, an IOM (Triple Crown design). I've since joined a local club and sail virtually every weekend. I would just like to thank you for your endeavours which have allowed me to enter a world I never thought was in my reach.

John Sterland, Australia

Coming upon your book, "Build your own Radio Controlled Yacht" in the Napier Public Library, I am hugely impressed. The combination of your superb photos and illustrations with your easy writing style make it a standout publication and I hope it does well for you.

Richard Spence, New Zealand

Thanks for an excellent design in your RG65. I trialled her again today in a solid 20 knots gusting higher. Even so in a steep chop and fingers off the rudder she drove upwind remarkably well, balanced perfectly. Very impressed that a model boat can handle that with a large rig. I found the book excellent. Ive built several big boats, plus a few skiffs and without that resource building such a good boat would have been impossible.

Hi Bryn, I recently finished building these 2 Racing Sparrow RS750s which i really enjoyed, it was a great project and kept me busy for a few months. They have been for a successful maiden voyage and sail great and now just need a few tweaks in the sail department to get them sailing even better. Thanks.

How to Build the Footy Model PRESTO

How to Build the Footy Model PRESTO

Description.

Be sure to select PRINT or DIGITAL when you order.

Built from solid balsa, PRESTO complies with the Footy model rules by fitting into the 12" x 6" box... on the diagonal, to give her just a bit more length.

The book is packed with step-by-step building photos, suppliers materials including radio control units, a reduced sized complete set of building plans (yes, you could scale-up) a lengthy intro to the evolution of the PRESTO design, as well some Flavio sketches for ideas of other boats. Plus the book includes lists of materials, as well as suppliers sources and other Footy info.

Is the model considered a beginner project? No, not really.

88 pp., softcover 8.5 x 11" ISBN 10: # 1-934982-06-7 ISBN 13: $ 978-1-934982-06-8

“Your downloads are ready” will be the subject line of an email you’ll receive from us—once we’ve processed your digital order. That email has the link to click, so you can then download the file.

This isn't an "instant" process, so if we're asleep, you may need to wait for regular business hours, for us to process the order. Although we are quite timely, we may not be processing on weekends & holidays.

Customer Reviews

I have always associated the footy class with the Polish OPAŁEK model. This is an interesting and simple structure that can be simply cut from plywood using a laser. However, the PRESTO footy gives all the charm of the old sail arrangement and on such a small model. Beautiful. Moreover, thank you very much for allowing me to buy digital plans from you (immediate delivery!!!). I also bought paper plans of a flying model from the USA and believe me, the "carbon footprint" they talk about on TV is huge in this case. I am not a particular supporter of these new rules, but I simply like nature, Polish forests, lakes, and the sea. Thank you very much for your cooperation and I wish you a lot of peace from Poland.

Looks like an interesting winter project

Model sailboat enthusiasts have found a new level of creativity with the emergence of 3D printing. This technology has made it easier, faster, and cheaper to produce sailboat models of various types and sizes, from massive yachts to small, affordable crafts. One example of this innovation is the 3D printed footy sailboat, which has revolutionized the footy sailing class. Footy sailboats are small, simple, and affordable compared to other sailboat model classes. However, 3D printing has made these boats even more accessible and easier to build without sacrificing performance on the water. This article will explore the design, construction, and racing potential of the 3D printed footy sailboat.

Customizable Footy Sailboats Made Easy with 3D Printing

Footy sailboats are characterized by their small size, typically between 12 and 18 inches in length, and their simple, minimalistic design.

The class rules dictate that the total weight must not exceed 425 grams and that the sail area must not exceed 50 square inches.

Footy sailboats utilize radio control systems that allow the operator to maneuver the sailboat from a distance.

Footy sailboats were popularized in Australia in the 1970s as a way to make model sailing more accessible to everyone, and since then, they have become a favorite among model boat enthusiasts worldwide.

3D Printed Footy Sailboat: Customizable Footy Sailboats Made Easy with 3D Printing

What are the class rules for footy sailboats?

Class rules for footy sailboats vary depending on the organization or group setting the rules, but typically include restrictions on boat length, width, weight, and sail area. Other rules may cover the types of materials allowed for construction, the number of crew members, and specific measurements for the hull, mast, and keel.

Cost-effective and customizable option for building model sailboats.

3D printing technology has revolutionized the process of building model sailboats, including footy sailboats . The 3D printing process has simplified the creation of footy sailboats and has reduced the time and cost required to build them. 3D printing allows enthusiasts to design, print, and assemble their own boats without requiring expensive materials or tools. There are many websites that offer free 3D printing files and plans for footy sailboats , which has made the process of building these boats more accessible to everyone.

Pros of 3D printing sailboats include its superb ability to allow for precise and intricate designs. Additionally, 3D printing reduces the time and cost of building model sailboats, making it a favorite choice for many hobbyists. Plus, it is apparent that 3D printing makes it easy to modify and customize designs.

Cons of 3D printing sailboats, however, include the high cost of purchasing and maintaining a 3D printer. It can also be difficult to create larger-scale models due to the size limitations of 3D printers. Another limitation is that materials used in 3D printing can limit durability.

Interestingly, 3D printing has also enabled enthusiasts to build footy sailboats that mimic the design of well-known sailing vessels such as the America’s Cup and J-Class yachts. Due to their small size, footy sailboats can be assembled, tested, and modified quickly, making them a favorite choice for many hobbyists.
