It all began in 1910 with RMS Olympic , the first ship to have an onboard heated swimming pool. Its famous sistership, RMS Titanic , followed a year later with a deep saltwater heated pool on the middle deck. Reserved for the exclusive use of first-class passengers, the pool formed part of the ocean liner’s Turkish bath complex. Male and female passengers were not allowed to bathe at the same time.

Fast forward 100 years and the appeal of an onboard swimming pool has not waned. In fact, it’s become a prerequisite for many yacht owners. In 2000, the 303-foot Tatoosh exploded the concept of swimming pools aboard yachts, thanks to a large contra-flow pool with a lifting floor. Then came Octopus three years later with its massive, glass-bottomed raised pool, followed by Alfa Nero ’ s aft deck infinity raised pool with a glass waterfall.

Swimming-pool water features are now a standalone trend. When designer Igor Lobanov designed Jubilee (now named Kaos ) he used a waterfall as an architectural divider to separate the pool from the alfresco dining area. At night, the pool lights up, adding another dimension to the yacht’s evening ambience.

Today, with the advent of beach clubs and multiple spa features that create the ultimate Zen lifestyle, superyacht swimming pools are rapidly multiplying, says yacht designer Theodoros Fotiadis. “Owners want more than one pool on their yacht, as the convenience of swimming in a heated pool is more appealing than the reality of swimming lengths in the ocean,” he tells Robb Report . “Owners also want to be able to both socialize with guests and relax in private, all while never having to leave their yacht, so having more than one pool or hot tub makes a lot of sense.”

While the size of a pool is usually dictated by the length and volume of the yacht, it seems swimming pools are where owners are willing to sacrifice other features. From main deck pools that steal coveted real estate from interior lounges to sun-deck pools that require structural engineering, the growing desire to give more outdoor deck space to aquatic amenities shows how serious the pool game has become.

Here are nine of the most spectacular pools on the water right now.

‘Plvs Vltra’

yacht in a pool

When the owner of 243-foot Plvs Vltra submitted his design brief, he made sure a large swimming pool on the main deck aft was top of his list. The pool is big enough to entertain the entire family, has counter-current jets for lap swimming and is surrounded by oversized sunpads and a cocktail bar. It’s visible from the owner’s deck and leads down to the amidships spa that incorporates a second mosaiced spa pool with sea views, a massage area, a steam room, a bar, and a sauna. When the time comes for calmer water action, a Jacuzzi on the sun deck answers the call.

‘M’Brace’ (ex-Elandess)

yacht in a pool

The 246-foot M’Brace is defined by a “sea terrace” sun deck where the owners can spend the entire day. Its centerpiece is a pool measuring 8 by 26 feet, filled with 22 tons of fresh water warmed via waste-heat recovery. A glass wall at one end is where the adults view the grandchildren splashing about from a large seating area, dining table, or cocktail bar. The glass bottom doubles as a skylight that casts dappled sunlight on the circular central staircase. As simple as it sounds to install a pool on the top deck, Abeking & Rasmussen had to use hidden beams to distribute the weight of the pool to the outer edges of the yacht’s superstructure and down to the hull.

‘Kensho’

yacht in a pool

The first sight that greets guests when they step aboard 246-foot Kensho is a vast lower deck infinity pool, complete with a cutaway glass side. When looking out to sea, the edge of the pool appears to bleed into the ocean, producing stunning sea-level views. When viewed from the dock, the pool seems to continue deep into the yacht’s interior. The shape of the pool is styled after a manta ray, while the walls and stairs on the pool deck look as though they’ve been carved by the sea. The pool forms one part of the beach club and complements the yacht’s green-blue metallic exterior paint job, chosen to blend in with the aquatic surroundings.

‘Eva.4Eva’

yacht in a pool

Eva.4eva is one of only a handful of yachts to have a pool located forward, rather than aft, where guests can soak in peace. Typically reserved for storing tenders or adorned with sun lounges, the foredeck aboard the 141-foot Mangusta Oceano 43 converts into a quiet, private retreat with a glass-edged infinity pool and sunpads hidden from view. It leaves the boat’s exterior aft deck free for guests to make the most of the ocean views with glass balustrades, turquoise soft furnishings and a drop-down swim platform at the stern. When it’s time to step the pool party vibe up a notch, a built-in light system brings it to life at night.

‘Christina O’

yacht in a pool

The 325-foot classic motor yacht Christina O , famously once owned by Greek shipping magnate Aristotle Onassis, is often cited for its innovative design features, including a dining room that seats 42 people and a cocktail bar that entertained the likes of Marilyn Monroe and President John F. Kennedy. One of its most forward-thinking amenities is the swimming pool on the aft main deck that features a decorative mosaiced floor. Filled with saltwater and depicting a scene from Greek mythology, the floor can be raised and lowered at the push of a button, converting into an elaborate dancefloor for revelry that lingers long into the night.

‘Seasense’

yacht in a pool

Even the name of the 220-foot Benetti Seasense alludes to its owners love of all things water. Designed by Cor D. Rover, a 33-foot pool sits at the heart of the yacht. “It started with a pool that you can walk around and spend the day around rather than putting people in a lower-deck beach club,” Rover tells Robb Report . The breadth of the pool area is emphasized by teak decking that runs athwartships and is complemented by teak louvers that provide shade along the sides of the aft deck. Large sliding doors divide the pool, dining and lounge areas into two or, if preferred, three spaces. When emptied, the pool converts into a basketball court using 22 panels stored in lower deck lockers.

‘Luna’

yacht in a pool

It’s only right that one of the world’s largest expedition yachts should have one of the biggest pools ever found on a superyacht. The 66-foot-long pool on the 377-foot Luna brings wow factor to a supersized open aft deck. Surrounded by large sunpads and partly shaded by the deck above, the pool dominates the stern area of the yacht creating a dedicated lido at sea. Dining areas and additional shaded seating areas are complemented by steps that lead down to the water’s edge, giving guests the choice between pool laps and sea swims.

‘Tatiana’

yacht in a pool

Spanning a total area of 1,184 square feet and considered one of the best superyacht beach clubs in the world, the 263-ft. Tatiana ’s multi-level recreational offering features two pools—one above the other—and is directly connected to the main salon via a dramatic underlit staircase. That means you can swim in the enclosed 30-foot-long freshwater pool or in the glass-bottomed second pool on the main deck. When the yacht is at anchor, fold-out terraces on both sides give access to the ultimate saltwater pool—the ocean.

yacht in a pool

Project X ’s glass-encased, hexagon-shaped swimming pool is one of the more dramatic on the water, with a practical side. Clad in silver Xs—the symbol that features prominently across the 288-footer by Golden Yachts—its glass sides were conceived to allow the adults to keep an eye on the children when playing, as well as bringing additional light into the beach club below. The bottom of the pool sits suspended in the center of the open-plan space, yet is accessed from the main deck aft. The pool also features a waterfall that adds drama to what is already a cool-looking water feature.

Life On A Yacht With A Pool

Doesn’t sound too shabby, right? A yacht with a pool is becoming more common among the top yachts for charter or purchase. We’re not talking about Olympic-size pools with a super high diving board, but then again, when you have the entire ocean at your beck and call, who needs one?

Pool or Deck Jacuzzi

If all you really need is a quick dip or even a soothing hydro-massage, the on deck Jacuzzi typically acts as the pool on board. Water temperature can be regulated in most, so turning off the heat is an option if you need to cool down after an onboard workout. Either way, a yacht with a pool offers the ultimate in relaxation while you take in the vast views of the sea.

Exercise On A Yacht

If you’re a swimmer and enjoy challenges, a lap pool is not unheard of aboard some of the finest yachts. Equipped with an intense water jet stream, which is activated upon demand at different speeds, an artificial current disburses the resistance you crave for a full-body workout.

Yachts With Large Pools

Some onboard pools are large, and offer space for up to 12 people, so the whole charter party can socialize together, sipping custom cocktails and nibbling on tapas. The idea of a yacht with a pool starts to become more realistic when you picture yourself luxuriating with family and friends in the middle of the ocean.

Custom Yacht Pool

Almost anything seems possible when building a custom yacht with a pool. Some superyachts feature an infinity pool, making you feel at one with the ocean. A raised-deck pool broadens your views in all directions, unobstructed and expansive. Some yacht stylists can create intricate designs at the bottom and sides of a pool with mosaic tiles that can form some of the most elaborate patterns.

It’s a slightly unnatural thing to have a pool floating on a yacht. But the largest private luxury yachts have all the size and the space, so why not? Why not be able to swim in fresh water on the aft deck and laze around the pool when on holiday? Here, we have a look at a selection of some of the biggest and best superyacht pools known.

“ Expedition Yacht Luna on the other hand gets full marks for size…”

No longer content with just a humble hot tub, superyacht designers and owners are venturing for even bigger and more sophisticated swimming pools. As superyachts grow in size and volume so do stunning private pools, many of which are located on main decks as well as fore decks. At night these spectacular pools are lit up by underwater lighting providing a mesmerizing effect.

From 5m long counter-flow sunken swimming pools to 12m custom infinity pools lined with mosaic tiles, surrounded by luxurious cushions and sun pads, there are different styles of pools for guests to enjoy. Some superyacht infinity pools have artificial counter-current and full dive stations which drop off directly into the ocean, awesome.

1. Motor yacht QUATTROELLE doesn’t have the largest pool in the superyacht world however it is impressive none the less. One reason is that it’s positioned way up on the 3rd deck. This makes for fantastic views and full sun. The pool area is also beautifully styled. A striking pool like this comes at a cost in terms of stability, so the pool cant be huge. Obviously the water needs to be drained when the yacht is making passage, as can be seen below. There aren’t many infinity pools on the top deck so QUATTROELLE gets full marks for interest and innovation.

2. The Expedition Yacht Luna on the other hand gets full marks for size. She has a huge aft deck and a huge swimming pool. Few other superyachts have dedicated so much space to sun worshiping. Luna’s long, elegant, trail away deck offers a vast pool, one of the best found on a superyacht. There’s also a huge decking area for sitting and soaking up the sun, just what’s needed to recharge your batteries. Other features include 10 VIP guest cabins each of which is over 100 square metres, a 20 metre outdoor swimming pool, nine decks and a large outdoor entertaining area.

3. One of the earlier very large yachts, Octopus is a 414 foot (126m) superyacht and one of the largest and most recognizable vessels in the world. The Octopus has a glass bottomed swimming pool located in one of its upper decks, ideal to relax in and have a refreshing swim. The yacht’s higher decks rap around the pool leaving a direct line to the sun, or the stars. This beautiful vessel also has many other major features like a cinema, a music recording studio, a hangar for two helicopters and even a ten person submarine. There’s also an owner’s exclusive deck with a walk-in closet, study, outside bar and a whirlpool.

4. The Serene superyacht is a yachting masterpiece with an internal seawater swimming pool (length 15 metres), a hot and cold Jacuzzi plus a jet stream swimming pool on the sundeck, what a choice! In addition to these pools the vessel also has a helicopter hangar, two helipads and a submarine hangar. There’s even underwater viewing space for the 24 guests on board who are well accommodated in the spectacular 12 luxurious state rooms.

5. The Lürssen yacht TV launched in 2008 is a 257-foot (78.3 metre) high volume luxury superyacht is owned by Mexican businessman Emilio Azcárraga Jean. Its sundeck area features a large, stunning spa pool with a capacity for 16 persons and a wonderful contra-flow swimming pool with a 20m water slide. There’s also a bar, barbecue and dining area on the vessel’s sundeck. The lower deck includes an amazing gymnasium, sauna, massage and beauty rooms, everything you need for a relaxing vacation.

6. The spectacular superyacht Ester III has a huge swimming pool. Located on the aft deck it spans two levels with a shallow end and a swim-up seat. Surrounded by sun pads this is one of the best superyacht swimming pools around. It’s perfect for mom and dad to soak up the sun while keeping a watchful eye on the kids as they play and swim in the pool. The water forms a waterfall down the front of the transom, running into teak grates below. It’s no wonder the Ester III was a real eye-catcher at the Monaco Yacht Show.

7. Now a common feature on mega yacht designs, the 269-foot (82-metre) Oceanco superyacht Alfa Nero was one of the first to have a large pool with glass window aft. One of the vessel’s most striking features is her aft deck with its unusually large swimming pool, complete with glass waterfall siding that converts to a helipad. The Oceanco boasts one of the world’s modern superyacht infinity pool innovations, 12 x 38 foot (3.7m x 11.6m). Through a hydraulic system this can be transformed into a dance floor or a helipad – wow!

8. The all conquering megayacht Eclipse is a 557 foot luxury yacht has two swimming pools one of which is a spectacular 15m swimming pool featuring a bottom that can be raised to create a paddling pool. After a day of swimming and frolicking in the pool, this innovative feature can be lifted to turn the area into a dance floor. The Eclipse also has a sauna, cinema, mini submarine, 30 luxurious cabins, two helicopter pads including plenty of high-tech gadgetry.

9. Superyacht PEGASUS V . Another well know yacht, she provides guests with a variety of outside space and a decent sized pool to match. One of the most impressive features on board yacht PEGASUS VIII is the Beach Club (see photo below). This is a dry dock for the custom built tender which disembarks guests directly inside the yacht which can be “flooded” when the tender is outside and forms a 12 metre swimming pool with underwater lighting and steps.

10. NOMAD . Once again, this yacht was early to have a very large pool and outside lifestyle area and many designs have taken up this successful concept over the last 10 years. The sun deck features a spa pool and swimming pool, where you can swim up to the bar, and sunbathing mattresses on each side as well as a fantastic Barbecue area.

11. Solandge is an 85m luxury yacht which was designed by Espen Oeino to offer many places for her guests to socialise or relax in privacy. Each deck has its own distinctive function with all the necessary furniture and amenities, such as built-in bars, buffets, dining areas, a pool and two hot tubs. There is a fantastic exterior cinema and a nightclub with a DJ station on the top deck. There is also an indoor/outdoor gymnasium.

yacht in a pool

A swimming pool aboard a luxury yacht is one of the most in-demand amenities, often acting as the social hub on sun-drenched yacht experiences in the Mediterranean and the Caribbean.

Many of the world’s most luxurious superyachts for charter and sale boast lavish pools with a raft of features, from counter-current jets to glass bottoms, waterfalls, and underwater lights. Some of the most sophisticated pools on yachts even boast depth-adjustable floors, which can be transformed into a dance floor at the flick of a switch.

Read on to discover the best yachts with swimming pools and discover a true taste of the ultimate superyacht lifestyle!

What are the best yachts with pools?

Some of the best yachts with pools include M/Ys MADSUMMER, KISMET, and LADY JORGIA (formerly AHPO).

M/Y MADSUMMER

Motor yacht MADSUMMER is an exquisite charter yacht with a striking pool on her main deck, offering a central destination for convivial get-togethers with friends and family members. The yacht’s pool is surrounded by generously sized sun pads and high glass bulwarks that offer protection from the elements without interrupting sea views. At 12 meters (3.3ft), the pool is big enough for swimming laps or simply soaking in the sun.

The award-winning 95-meter (311ft) MADSUMMER, is a pedigree superyacht built by Lurssen in 2019. Her swimming pool is just one of many delightful features that make MADSUMMER one of the most sought-after superyachts for charter. She boasts a world-class gym and spa, extensive diving facilities, 10 spacious guest rooms, and an elegant contemporary modern interior by Laura Sessa, offering refined spaces for relaxation, dining, and entertaining.

The 95-meter (312.4ft) Lurssen-built KISMET is a refined yacht with pool that offers limitless levels of luxury. Her striking oval mosaic swimming pool with Jacuzzi is her highlight, located on her foredeck, which commands spectacular sea views. The pool depth is staggered, with a shallow rim around the outer edge, offering a great place to immerse yourself in the water while enjoying the sunshine, cocktail in hand. Capping off the pool area is oversized seating, making the pool area a superb social destination.

Beyond the pool, the award-winning KISMET – considered one of the world’s finest superyachts; features include a superb gym and spa, a voluminous master deck with Jacuzzi, and a one-of-a-kind retractable outdoor fireplace. This luxury yacht is listed for sale exclusively with Moran Yacht & Ship.

M/Y JORGIA (Formerly AHPO)

Since her launch in 2021, the record-breaking M/Y JORGIA has been the talk of the superyacht industry. This Lurssen custom yacht is one of the world’s largest superyachts at 115 meters (377.2ft), the world’s most expensive charter yacht – priced at 2.6 million Euros per week – and was recently sold by yacht brokerage Moran Yacht & Ship in what is believed to be the largest yacht brokerage deal in history.

As you would expect, her swimming pool, located on the aft deck, is nothing short of impressive. The glass-fronted, eight-meter pool boasts integrated LED lights and privacy walls, except for the aft wall, which is transparent to enable swimmers to enjoy views of the sea. Immediately adjacent to the yacht’s swimming pool is the hot tub. A heat recovery system redirects heat from the ship’s engines and generators keeping the pool at the ideal temperature. So even on a cruise in Antarctica, you can still enjoy this outstanding feature.

If the yacht’s pool doesn’t take your fancy, M/Y JORGIA boasts a wealth of features to keep you entertained, including a spectacular beach club, a full-service spa and beauty salon, a fully equipped gym, a cinema room, a fully commercial helipad, and a garage loaded with the latest tenders and water toys.

yacht in a pool

Charter Yachts with a Swimming Pool

Plunging into the deck swimming pool for a refreshing dip is a must during any yacht charter.

Whether a cooling swim after a sundrenched day beckons or the deep blue is a little too intense, your swimming pool will always delight. Intersperse swims with leisurely bronzing on sunpads hugging the pool, and at dusk, request for underwater lights to be turned on and float aglow under a canopy of glimmering stars. It's just you and the open sky.

Thanks for contacting us. We've received your submission.

Azzam checks in as the biggest yacht in the world.

When you picture beach clubs, helipads, gyms and cinemas, do you picture them on land or floating in the middle of the ocean?

Well the 10 biggest superyachts in the world feature all those and more, and we’ve got the details on all of them for you.

1. Azzam – 590ft

Azzam has held the record for the world’s largest privately-owned superyacht since it was constructed in 2013.

The ship cost an estimated $605 million to build, and can accommodate up to 36 guests and 80 cabin crew.

It is equipped with an onboard gym, swimming pool and even a golf training room.

Azzam cost around $605 million to finish.

2. Fulk Al Salamah – 538ft

Translated into “ship of peace,” Fulk Al Salamah has been in service with the Royal Navy of Oman since construction in 2016.

It became the second biggest superyacht in the world when it was built and has remained in that position.

Fulk Al Salamah

3. Eclipse – 533ft

Owned by Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich, Eclipse cost an estimated $500 million to build back in 2009.

At 533 feet long,  Eclipse  was the world’s biggest superyacht until Azzam was constructed four years later.

The ship is fitted with 18 guest cabins and can accommodate up to 36 guests and 66 crew members.

Eclipse

Its stand-out features include two helipads, a wood-burning fire pit and a 16m swimming pool that transforms into a dance floor.

4. Dubai – 531ft

At just two feet shorter, Dubai is the fourth largest superyacht in the world at 531 feet.

The ship was commissioned in 1995 but work was not completed until 2006 and cost an estimated $400 million.

Dubai

From 2006 to 2009, it was the world’s largest superyacht.

Ob board, Dubai’s eight decks boast a disco, a cinema, a submarine and a lobster tank.

5. Dilbar – 512ft

Named after the late mother of the owner, Uzbekistan-born billionaire Alisher Usmanov,  Dilbar  was built in 2016.

The ship can accommodate up to 24 guests and 100 crew.

Dilbar

Guests who don’t fancy going over the side are well-catered for, as Dilbar is the only superyacht in the world to feature a 25-meter swimming pool.

It also has a large garden and two helipads.

6. Prince Abdulaziz – 482ft

Built in 1984, Prince Abdulaziz held the title of the longest and tallest yacht in the world for an impressive 22 years.

It was overtaken by Dubai in 2006, which is 49 feet longer.

Prince Abdulaziz

Prince Abdulaziz is one of the royal yachts of the Saudi royal family.

It can accommodate up to 64 guests onboard and between 60 and 65 crew.

7. A+ (previously Topaz) – 482ft

Previously named  Topaz, A+  was built in 2012 and cost approximately $527 million.

With a huge number of features, A+ would be a great place to entertain guests.

A+ checked out around $527 million.

The boat is equipped with an on deck jacuzzi, two helicopter landing pads, swimming pool, tender garage, fitness hall, cinema and a large conference room.

8. El Mahrousa – 478ft

El Mahrousa was built in 1865 on the River Thames and held the title for world’s biggest yacht for more than 100 years.

It was designed by British naval architect Oliver Lang for the Ottoman governor of Egypt.

El Mahrousa

Translated to ‘the protected’, El Mahrousa became the first ship to cross the  Suez Canal  back in 1869 and has since been a naval training ship for the Egyptian government.

It is the oldest active superyacht in the world.

9. Nord – 466ft

The newest superyacht on the list, Nord was only completed this year.

It covers six decks and can accommodate up to 36 guests in its 20 cabins.

Nord gives Dilbar a run for its money with a huge list of fun features.

Nord

These include a gym, elevator, swimming pool, cinema, tender garage, swimming pool, barbecue, beach club, spa room, sauna and beauty salon.

The ship also has two helicopter pads, one on the bow of the yacht and one on the top deck.

10. Flying Fox – 446ft

Although it is the tenth-largest superyacht,  Flying Fox  is the largest charter vessel in the world.

Made up of six decks, the ship can accommodate up to 36 day guests and 25 overnight guests.

Flying Fox

The boat features a diving center, spa and a cryotherapy sauna.

And for anyone thinking about hiring it, it is estimated to cost $3 million per week.

Solving the problem of adding pools in yachts

Unlike on the land, where creatives can create a suite of fountains to dance and sway on command, incorporating a even simple water features such as a small fountain or a waterfall aboard a yacht brings with it many challenges to consider.

Because a yacht is designed to move through water, the opportunity to easily defy the laws of physics is lost. 'The moment you start rocking the boat,' says designer Evan K. Marshall, 'everything is thrown off.'

Problems with pools

Historically, the biggest consideration was how to manage water on the boat.

The movement of the boat itself creates a wave momentum in on-board pools that can become difficult to contain, even in the calmest of cruising conditions.

For this reason, the easiest solution was to use the pool only when the yacht was docked or at anchor, with all guests ordered out so that the pool could be emptied or drained to half capacity before the yacht got underway. While this remains a common practice, most pools are now also designed with deep surrounding sumps that capture wayward water and return it via a circulator pump and/or a holding tank that stores the warm water between uses.

Today the issue is not only about the 'wow' factor, but about incorporating the amenities an owner might enjoy on land into his yacht.

'When a boat grows [in length], the owner wants a bigger pool,' says Frank Laupman of Omega Architects. 'The pool is never big enough, especially for swimmers. We would like to make a 10 metre pool, but most of the time you can only do one of seven to eight metres.'

The typical solution is to create an infinity pool with a swim-against current feature.

Location is critical a large pool on an upper deck creates a weight issue that can interfere with the boat's stability and centre of gravity. For this reason most pools are placed on a lower deck near the stern. However, here you must consider the shape of the hull. While an owner might request a depth of around five feet, a fast semi-displacement hull, for example, would mandate that the depth stay in the three to four foot range.

The bigger the pool, the more water it will require, which adds weight to the vessel, and thus becomes a factor for the engines.

'We are careful with cutting-edge designs,' says Laupman, whose firm is currently working on a 73m boat for which a large pool is an important feature.

He agrees that there are more considerations than meet the eye. 'Most designers have to determine whether the pool should be located on the aft deck so that it is indoor/outdoor, or covered on the lower deck so guests can jump from the platform into the water. Then it becomes how to combine this design with saunas, gyms, seating areas, side hatches and whatever else might be required for the beach club.'

On the 73m project_ Omega, _the beach club floor was designed to be flush with the hatch that extends at the stern. The pool water is on the same level as the floor, which required some tricks with height due to the boat's shallow draft.

'You can only do this with a big boat, such as a Lürssen or CRN. Most of the time it is not possible; you need to climb three steps to reach the swim platform, which compromises the indoor/outdoor relationship. It's not really state-of-the-art work,' Laupman says, 'but you must do your homework.'

Interior water features

Designer Pascale Reymond of Reymond Langton Design likes to make a water feature an interior focal point, combining water movement with carved stone art pieces or contemporary ornamental glass, coupled with dynamic lighting, reflective surfaces and textures.

'Not only do waterjets or waterfalls add entertainment,' she says, 'moving water can mask any unnatural sounds to maintain a sense of tranquillity.'

In each of their foyer waterfall projects aboard large yachts, Reymond Langton have carefully engineered their designs to ensure the water flows smoothly in the intended direction.

This is an important consideration, confirms Jonathan Quinn Barnett, who has designed several interior waterfalls unfortunately for use aboard yachts too private to be published.

'Water doesn't always behave the way you want it to,' he says. 'It can take on a life of its own.'

Barnett advises consulting with an engineering group early on if you envision a specific water feature to ensure that the desired effect can be achieved.

'[An interior waterfall] is hardly going to be like standing next to a natural waterfall,' he points out. 'If you don't get that effect, is it worth doing?'

In 1994, Barnett created a 7m waterfall aboard a 73m vessel that fell the length of three decks.

'I used Plexiglas shields and angled the water back to minimize the splashing. By adding subtle texture to the wall,' he details, 'you can put some life back into the water as it falls vertically because it's falling down an uneven surface. Adding light creates a greater visual effect.

'With an interior waterfall, it is critical that you pitch the surface ever so slightly at the vertical,' he advises.

When the water is angled back at two degrees, it will attach itself to the surface and stay there. The water falls to a catch basin and returns to the top via a circulator pump.

On a 91m yacht, Barnett designed a bathtub that filled from a waterfall eight feet above.

'I incorporated LED lights recessed into the marble that illuminated the water as it cascaded down the surface,' he says. 'The marble also needed to be heated the same system as under-floor heating so that the water did not get chilled as it travelled from the ceiling.'

No builder has been more forward thinking in its 60m+ design concepts than Oceanco, who has assembled a consultative set of designers around the globe to provide intriguing designs, most of which exhibit water features that elicit a 'wow'.

The 87.5m Waterfall concept does just that. Envisioned by Andy Moore of Moore Yacht Design, the design has two versions: one with a large pool and the second with a smaller pool to allow for more lounging areas. Central to the design are waterfalls intended to mimic the 'unadulterated power and splendour of natural waterfalls'. On the version with the larger pool, the waterfall appears to originate from within the main superstructure and fall into the forward end of the pool.

'Implementing the design so that the function supports the aesthetics is a complex matter,' says Moore. To keep the water off the deck, the main body is aimed into a large, deep drop-off. From there the volume is reduced as it cascades under a bridge and through the aft superstructure. Each water level is designed so that the cascades will not fall onto the deck, steps or transom when the yacht moves.

'One cubic metre of water weighs a ton, so there are certainly some important stability considerations to take into account at the planning stage of any significant water feature aboard a yacht,' notes Moore. 'For this design, I have worked closely with the naval architecture and design department at Oceanco, which currently have engineering studies underway.'

While the likes of Jon Bannenberg and Tim Heywood have successfully executed designs with water that flowed down between masts or pools that filled with waterfalls, some scepticism remains.

'When you're at sea,' says Barnett, 'playing with too much water on deck runs the risk of being gimmicky. You have to be extremely careful to ensure you achieve the desired effect especially for the cost, maintenance and logistics required to run water down, through or under decks.'

But exploration and development into the area of on-board water features remains strong.

'We are exploring a design where water originates at the top deck and falls to the stern and into the water,' says Stefan van Cleef of technology specialist van Berge Henegouwen. In this design, the water maintains its course even when there is movement.

'The higher it gets, the more different the route of the water droplets,' says van Cleef, 'but so far the biggest problem has been to curb the sound when such a feature is placed in the interior. We are exploring other areas and ways around it.'

Yacht design often takes its inspiration from other industries, and with water features it only makes sense that we explore what has been achieved in the cruise ship sector. The 360m Oasis of the Seas features a water-based theatrical space at the boat's stern with a deep pool and nozzles capable of shooting streams of water up to 20 metres into the air.

Designer Martin Francis acted as a consultant on the Oasis project and is well versed in both worlds of private yachts and cruise ships.

'Cruise ships don't move much relative to yachts, so incorporating a fountain can be pretty straightforward. It depends on how big the fountain is and, provided the wind direction, water can be pumped up.'

Water logistics

California-based Fluidity Design Consultants were brought in to advise on this particular aspect of Oasis's water feature.

'With a ship's motion, there is no way to guarantee a level,' says Fluidity's vice president Tom Yankelitis, 'so this eliminated certain types of effects we could achieve. When you're pumping water through a nozzle, you're only relying on pressure so it doesn't matter what angle the boat is at because the water will perform at a relatively consistent manner in that device.'

Fluidity Design presented a range of nozzles that were more resistant to ship motion and wind that could turn on or off, shoot water up in the air and in an arc across the pool. Nozzles incorporated into a bridge above the pool allowed for a rain effect.

'Even with these particular nozzles, we still had to do things in the space to mitigate wind and the wave action in the pool,' says Yankelitis.

During the design process, engineers had to reconfigure a two- to three-metre wide lift down the centre of the pool to be strengthened for lateral motion to attenuate the wave action and lessen the lateral force.

Studies also determined that the space's location at the aft end of the ship would have wind blowing from the rear back in, so sails were devised to protect the water effects. In the end, the architects ended up conceding that the first four rows of spectators might be splashed upon.

Will we soon see choreographed fountains swaying on the stern?

'Anything is possible with money and a bulldozer,' says Barnett. Beware, however, as even aboard Oasis of the Seas one of the challenges was scaling down the power consumption required by the spray nozzles. 'A modest fountain with a dozen vertical nozzles spraying six feet high would require about four times the power of a 20 by 15 foot unheated swimming pool,' says Yankelitis.

If you can fit a pool big enough, Martin Francis has designed and pioneered a system of wave attenuation implemented aboard the 80m _Golden Odyssey _to combat that age-old issue.

'The system is designed to take the momentum out of the wave,' Francis explains. Based on the interring anti-heeling system of interconnecting water tanks used to stabilize ships, water flows from one tank to another in a controlled way designed to dampen roll. The wave is captured at the pool's edge in a holding tank and released back into the pool as the ship rolls. This takes the top off the wave and is 'very effective,' says Francis.

Incorporating a water feature isn't a complex problem, states Barnett. 'Once you work through the logistics of it, you can get some fantastic effects. There may be some compromises to be made, however.'

Eduard Gray of Gray Yacht Design is ready to push that envelope.

'As a designer I work with engineers who try to interpret my design into real-world solutions,' he says. 'This way, I am allowed a degree of freedom for innovative thinking before being brought back to earth with the constraints of regulations and physical limitations.'

His latest design, the 100m Sovereign, features an infinity pool with a glass-topped helicopter landing pad. Regulations aside, how do guests disembark from the aircraft with out having to swim? But that is what engineers are for.

10 of the best hotel pools in the US

MSN has partnered with The Points Guy for our coverage of credit card products. MSN and The Points Guy may receive a commission from card issuers.

Is there anything better in life than spending a lazy day lounging in the sun by a pool? Probably not, unless your idea of the perfect pool day is floating in a larger-than-life lazy river or chasing your kiddos around a pool with a kid-friendly splash pad or wave pool.

Whatever your version of an ideal pool day is, it all starts with the swimming pool. Thankfully, here in the U.S., we have more incredible hotel pools than we could ever possibly write about.

That said, we have gathered a handful of our favorites from sea to shining sea. These include pools with knockout views you have to see to believe, ones with incredible cabanas and others that are just so fun and functional that you’ll never want to leave.

From the Las Vegas Strip to the theme parks of Orlando and everywhere in between, here are some of the best hotel pools in the U.S. to consider for your next trip.

Disney’s Yacht Club Resort and Beach Club Resort

In Orlando , there’s no shortage of activities — and there’s certainly no shortage of pools.

One of the best in Orlando (and the country) can be found on the grounds of Disney World, shared between two Disney resorts: Disney’s Yacht Club and Beach Club. Called Stormalong Bay, this 3-acre pool complex is basically a water park complete with a trio of leisure pools (including a sand-bottom pool), a 230-foot-long waterslide, a lazy river and an elevated tanning area.

How to book: At two of the more expensive properties at Walt Disney World, rates easily reach over $500 a night. However, with the help of a free Disney vacation planner , you might be able to find a better deal.

Four Seasons Hotel Philadelphia at Comcast Center

When we think about incredible pools, our minds don’t usually go straight to  indoor pools — unless you’re familiar with the luxe Four Seasons Philadelphia. On the 57th floor of the downtown Philly hotel, the 30,000-gallon infinity-edge pool is reserved exclusively for hotel guests and boasts some of the most incredible views of the city, all seen from the comfort of heated water.

It’s open all year long, so hotel guests can take in those stunning views or sit back with a healthy bento box meal delivered to their lounge chair even while it’s snowing outside.

How to book:  Though we’re hoping it’ll happen someday, Four Seasons still doesn’t have a loyalty program. Cash rates at the Four Seasons Philadelphia can be found from $1,000 a night during peak summer months. There is some good news, however: Four Seasons is a member of American Express Fine Hotels + Resorts , a program for holders of The Platinum Card® from American Express (and other Centurion- and Platinum-branded cards), that offers complimentary breakfast, guaranteed 4 p.m. late checkout, upgrades and a $100 spa credit.

JW Marriott San Antonio Hill Country Resort & Spa

Everything’s bigger in Texas — and that’s exactly the case at the JW Marriott San Antonio Hill Country Resort & Spa.

There, guests will find more water action than at most resorts, including a 9-acre water park with multiple waterslides, a 1,100-foot lazy river, a kids pool with a zero-depth beach entry, an activity pool and even an adults-only pool. So, whatever your preferred vacation style, everyone who visits this Marriott Bonvoy-associated resort can find the perfect pool to beat the intense heat of Texas Hill Country.

How to book:  Cash rates at this JW Marriott start as low as $290 a night, though you’ll likely find more availability closer to $400 and above, with rates soaring to over $1,000 during peak travel periods. Marriott Bonvoy award nights start at 43,000 points a night, and if you act fast, there is still reward night availability for July and August.

Right now, with the Marriott Bonvoy Boundless Credit Card, you could earn 75,000 Marriott Bonvoy bonus points after using your card to spend $3,000 on eligible purchases in the first six months; plus, earn 50,000 bonus points after you stay six eligible paid nights at Marriott hotels through Jan. 31, 2024.

Resorts World Las Vegas

In Sin City, choosing a hotel based on its pool is an overwhelming experience because there are just so many great options.

Those trying to trade in some points for a stay at a property with one of those pools should look no further than Hilton’s Resorts World . It’s home to three different hotels in one massive complex: the Las Vegas Hilton, the Conrad Las Vegas and the luxury-focused Crockfords Las Vegas.

Related: The best hotel pools in Las Vegas

At the property’s 5 1/2-acre pool complex, located outside on the fifth floor, guests will find a handful of different pools to experience. That includes the large Main Pool, where guests can reserve daybeds with a dedicated server, side table, concierge, towel service and shade.

There’s also a Family Pool with rentable cabanas; the Bimini Pool with oversized games and activities; the Cabana Pool, where guests can rent cabanas with amenities like a television, refrigerator, coffee table and misting fan; and a VIP pool.

How to book:  Because there are three different Hilton Honors -associated hotels here, rates vary depending on where you want to stay. Rates at the Las Vegas Hilton start at $78 or 45,000-70,000 points per night. Rates at the Conrad can start at $95 or 39,000-80,000 points per night. Rates at Crockfords start at $259 or 88,000-95,000 points per night.

The West Hollywood Edition

If you want to take in sweeping views of Hollywood Hills and the Los Angeles skyline, there’s no better place to do it than from the pool at the celebrity-friendly West Hollywood Edition.

High in the hills, the pool offers wooden lounge chairs and lush greenery throughout to complement the stunning California sunsets and sunrises that are a must to take in while visiting this Marriott Bonvoy property. For food and drink, The Roof offers pool guests a wide arrange of drinks, including “tropical-inspired cocktails with Southern California flair” and an extensive list of tequilas and mezcals.

How to book: Cash rates for the West Hollywood Edition, including access to its rooftop pool, start at $568 a night. For folks with Marriott Bonvoy points to blow, nightly redemptions start at 68,500 points.

Fairmont Kea Lani

It’s tough to imagine sitting by a pool in Hawaii when you’re surrounded by the beauty of the ocean. However, at the Fairmont Kea Lani in Maui, it’s really not that hard because there are plenty of incredible pools.

At this all-suite Fairmont, there are two lagoon pools joined by a 140-foot waterslide, two whirlpools and a kids pool with a basketball hoop. There’s also an adults-only pool tucked away from the others.

Guests can rent cabanas around the three different main pools with access to chilled water, juices and sodas with the reservation, plus complimentary snacks. All guests can enjoy lunch and cocktails from Ko Restaurant and Ama Bar & Grill, as well as grab water toys and free sunscreen at the Pool Pavilion.

How to book: Rates at the Fairmont Kea Lani, the only Accor Live Limitless property on Maui, start at $1,009 a night. Read a review of the property, as well as reviews of TPG’s other favorite Maui properties .

Aulani, A Disney Resort & Spa

When it comes to swimming pools, Disney knows what it’s doing — that’s why it’s got two entries on this list. This time, we’re looking at Aulani, A Disney Resort & Spa, one of the most popular hotels in all of Hawaii, especially for folks traveling with family.

Called the Waikolohe Valley pool area, this resort has something for everyone: pools with ocean views, a kids pool and the main Waikolohe pool, and an 8,200-square-foot zero-entry pool with a waterslide in a volcano. Hotel guests can rent cabanas, dine poolside and forget the outside world while splashing and relaxing under the big Hawaii sky.

How to book:  Cash rates at this top-tier Disney property don’t come cheap and are usually upward of $569 a night.

The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas

Another contender from Las Vegas, the pools at The Cosmopolitan — a Marriott Bonvoy Autograph Collection property — are where people go to bake in the sun and the flashing lights of Las Vegas Boulevard.

Of the two pools, the Boulevard Pool reigns supreme with its fourth-floor location overlooking the Strip. Folks who head up to this pool deck can book cabanas with a server and complimentary fruit plate, or just opt for a daybed. The pool frequently features live entertainment and “dive-in” movies. However, you can always hit up the bar for a refreshing drink to cool down from the desert heat.

How to book: You can find cash rates at The Cosmopolitan for as low as $240 a night if you look hard and your dates are flexible. Vegas is famous for its fluctuating rates, though, so don’t be shocked if stays here cost upward of $500 a night on various weekends. The Cosmopolitan is also a Marriott Bonvoy resort with award availability starting at 75,000 points per night.

1 Hotel Brooklyn Bridge

There’s no skyline like the New York City skyline — and there’s really no better place to take it in than the rooftop pool at 1 Hotel Brooklyn Bridge.

Located in Brooklyn Heights near the trendy DUMBO neighborhood, this hotel is prime Brooklyn real estate. However, the real star of the show is the pool. It’s reserved for hotel guests, but reservations are required and limited to two-hour slots. Food and drinks are served from Harriet’s Rooftop, which stays open even after the pool closes at 7 p.m.

How to book:  Rates at 1 Hotel Brooklyn Bridge vary throughout the year. In the busy summer months, rooms start around $400 a night during weekdays but can climb to over $600 on weekends.

The Westin Kierland Resort & Spa

Another resort with a pool area that doubles as a water park, the Westin Kierland in Scottsdale, Arizona, is the perfect place to take the kids (or kids at heart) to enjoy a day basking in the sun, splashing in the water and racking up some Marriott Bonvoy points along the way.

At Adventure Water Park, guests can ride a 110-foot waterslide, float along a lazy river or try a surfing simulator that feels more California than Arizona desert. You can rent a cabana to get a little shade or reserve a Tommy Bahama Relaxation Reef that’s basically a private island right in the middle of it all. If that’s just too much, the adults-only pool is the ideal spot for folks to relax without a child in sight.

How to book: In the very hot summer months, you can find rooms as low as $229. As the Phoenix area cools down in the fall, rates go up significantly, easily upward of $500 a night. Award nights can be found as low as 41,000 points per night and as high as 60,000 points per night.

SPONSORED:  With states reopening, enjoying a meal from a restaurant no longer just means curbside pickup.

And when you do spend on dining, you should use a credit card that will maximize your rewards and potentially even score special discounts. Thanks to temporary card bonuses and changes due to coronavirus, you may even be able to score a meal at your favorite restaurant for free.

These are the best credit cards for dining out, taking out, and ordering in to maximize every meal purchase.

6 Hotel Pools Perfect for Swimmers

Many hotel pools are built with children and sun-seekers in mind: too short, too warm and too crowded. These, in cities across the U.S., let you get your laps in, in style.

A pool with still clear water is shown, with lounge chairs along the sides, with stone and wood decor and windows to the outside.

By Julie Halpert

Michele Heisler, 61, is an avid swimmer, putting in 45 minutes three times a week in a local 25-yard-long pool. But swimming while traveling can be challenging. “Most hotel pools are too tiny or too crowded,” she said.

Then, while planning a trip to Chicago, Ms. Heisler, from Ann Arbor, Mich., came across a photo of the hotel pool of her dreams. In the Intercontinental Hotel, the 25-yard-long pool, built in 1929, is one of the oldest in Chicago and is surrounded by Greek-inspired marble decoration. “You feel like you’re swimming in an ancient Greek temple. It’s a magical experience,” said Ms. Heisler, who has stayed at the Intercontinental four times in the last 10 years because of the pool.

Even at a resort, swimming laps often means having to negotiate odd, and often short, lengths while keeping an eye out for cannonballing children in water that can feel like a hot tub. Finding a hotel pool that’s large enough for lap swimming in a big city is even more daunting. But they exist. Here are six hotel pools that are at least 25 yards long and provide ample space for lap swimming, as well as first-class ambience; some are open to visitors who are not spending the night. Most are open all day, but early morning hours will provide the best lap swim experience, hotel representatives say.

InterContinental Chicago Magnificent Mile

The setting: The south tower of the InterContinental Chicago Magnificent Mile hotel was originally a private athletic club, complete with this indoor pool, which was host to the famous Olympic swimmer and actor Johnny Weissmuller, who broke records at the 1924 and 1928 Olympics.

The pool, on the hotel’s 14th floor, is “an architectural marvel complete with spectator seating and turrets” decorated with Spanish Majolica tiles, said Christopher Cawley, the hotel’s general manager. It has four swimming lanes. Lounge chairs surround the pool, and a newly renovated, multilevel fitness center is nearby.

Hours: Weekdays 6 a.m. to 10 p.m.; weekends 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. There are no times set aside especially for lap swimming.

Pool temperature: 84 degrees

Public access: Non-guests can purchase a resort pass online to use the pool and fitness facilities through Resort Pass , a platform that partners with hotels across the United States to offer day passes to access exclusive amenities. Prices vary depending on season, currently an adult day pass is $40.

Four Seasons Hotel New York Downtown

The setting: When the Four Seasons Hotel New York Downtown opened in 2016, it included this 25-yard-long indoor pool designed, like the rest of the hotel’s interiors, by the interior design firm Yabu Pushelberg , originally from Canada.

The pool area features stone-clad columns, wood screens and a custom scratched-plaster finish on the walls to add to the soothing tranquillity of the space. “If you close your eyes, you feel like you are transported to the French Riviera,” said Thomas Carreras, the hotel’s general manager. He calls it a “sanctuary.” There is a mix of seating, from lounge chairs with plush white towels to comfortable love seats with oversize pillows. The pool is on the hotel’s third floor, along with the fitness facility and the spa. There is one designated lap lane.

Hours: 6 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Pool temperature: 83 to 85 degrees

Public access: The pool is open to hotel guests and to members of Club 27, the hotel’s private wellness club.

The setting: The W Miami is within the IconBrickell complex and condominium development in Miami’s Brickell neighborhood, which was built in 2008; the W opened in 2016. Hotel guests and building residents have use of the complex’s outdoor pools, which include a reflection pool, a hot tub and a lap pool. The lap pool, which overlooks Biscayne Bay and has an infinity edge, is 205 feet long, 40 feet longer than an Olympic-size pool, making it somewhat mind-bending for swimmers used to more standardized lengths.

The pools’ design was inspired by the French designer Phillip Starck whose firm designed the common areas and residences of the complex. It is intended to be a “whimsical urban-chic version of the Champs-Élysées,” with the pool working as the avenue instead of concrete, said Arianna Calcaterra, the hotel’s director of marketing.

Gail Gensler, 63, who lives in a condominium apartment in the complex, swims there twice a week as soon as the pool opens, often at sunrise. “It’s very gorgeous when you’re watching the sun rise over the bay and you’re getting your workout in,” she said.

The pool is on a two-acre, resort-style pool deck. There are also lounge pools and cabanas, as well as a poolside restaurant serving food and beverages.

Hours: Guests can go as early as dawn to swim laps. Pool service, which includes towels and lifeguards, is offered from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Food service is from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Pool temperature: 78 to 82 degrees in the spring and fall and 76 to 78 degrees in the winter.

Guest access: The pool is managed by IconBrickell, the developer of the complex. Hotel guests have access along with residents of the complex.

Four Seasons Hotel New Orleans

The setting: Built in 2021, the 75-foot-long outdoor pool at the Four Seasons Hotel New Orleans overlooks the Mississippi River, and the mosaic-lined pool has a slight crescent bend to mirror the curve of the river.

The pool, on the hotel’s fifth floor, is also a consistent 3 feet 8 inches deep along its whole length and features underwater lighting and music. There are two designated lap lanes. It’s surrounded by chaise longues, a separate hot tub and four cabanas that are available for daily rental. A fitness center and spa are on the same floor. There’s also a poolside bar serving cocktails and food.

Hours: 7 a.m. to 10 p.m.

Pool temperature: 84 degrees.

Guest access: The pool is used by both hotel guests and residents of the property.

Conrad Nashville

The setting: Built in June 2022 when the Conrad Nashville opened, this outdoor pool is 81 feet long and is on the hotel’s roof deck on the third floor.

As you swim, you can take in views of Nashville, including Vanderbilt University, said Eumi Koh, the hotel’s general manager. Food and beverages are available in the pool area from May to October, but the pool is open year round. There are roughly 30 lounge chairs, all outfitted with umbrellas, along with day beds and dining tables and chairs. Three cabanas can be reserved. There are no lap lanes with ropes.

Hours: Sunrise to sunset. Food and beverage service is available Monday through Sunday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Pool temperature: 85 to 89 degrees

Guest access: The pool is for hotel guests only.

Cincinnati Marriott at RiverCenter

The setting: The 75-foot-long indoor pool, located on the ground floor of the Cincinnati Marriott at RiverCenter, which is across the Ohio River from downtown Cincinnati, was renovated in 2020. Windows the length of the pool provide natural lighting, so “you don’t feel like you’re swimming in a cave,” said Shawnna Dunaway, the hotel’s director of sales and marketing. “It’s very open and light.”

She said the pool is particularly appealing to the hotel’s many corporate guests, who “can have that full workout of a full-length pool.” There are also lounge chairs surrounding the pool and a fitness center nearby. There are no lane dividers.

Guest access: Only hotel guests can use the pool.

The unspoken rules about how to behave on a superyacht

  • The superyachting world is very small, with only 5,800 yachts longer than 30 meters at sea.
  • That insularity has bred a specific etiquette, which is often hard for outsiders to know about.
  • These are the de facto rules of the most expensive billionaire toys, superyachts .

Insider Today

For the owners of superyachts , privacy is often the most valuable thing money can buy. It's one reason centimillionaires and billionaires pay eight or nine figures for a palace at sea, far from the prying eyes of land dwellers.

Even the most gossipy crew members should stay tight-lipped about the name of a former owner or charter guest, and many brokers shy away from answering benign questions.

That means that, aside from basic safety guidelines, most of the rules of superyachting are unwritten. The very few who need to know them — there are only about 5,800 yachts longer than 30 meters at sea, according to SuperYacht Times — already know them.

But if you do happen to be a lucky guest at a party on a billionaire's $500 million ship or find yourself included in a $1 million-a-week vacation, there are a few things you need to know.

After four days of touring superyachts that sell for as much as $75 million and chatting with the people who buy, sell, and work on them at the Palm Beach International Boat Show , Business Insider gleaned a few key edicts. Given the discreet nature of the industry, almost all the people we spoke with requested anonymity to protect their working relationships, but here's what they had to say.

Take off your shoes

While it's a basic rule for anyone in boating, it may come as a surprise to an outsider that no matter how rich you are or how expensive your heels are, in the vast majority of cases, you can't wear shoes on board.

It's partly for safety — you don't want anyone slipping on a wet deck — but partly to keep the yacht clean. So expect to see barefoot billionaires, and if you forgot to get a pedicure, bring a set of special boat shoes.

Don't make any assumptions about money — but know the signs

In the superyacht world, it's safe to assume almost everyone you meet is very, very rich, and many brokers and builders say you can't judge a book by its cover when it comes to prospective clients.

"It has nothing to do with how they're dressed," one broker told BI. "It's the biggest mistake you can make because a complete slobby-looking guy or couple could be a multibillionaire."

There are, however, a few clues. Watches are one; new footwear is another.

"Rich people always have new shoes," a superyacht expert said. But because of the shoe rule mentioned above, this tip probably applies only when they're on land.

Book your massage early

Wellness areas, including spa rooms with a massage bed or two and a professional-grade facial machine, are becoming must-haves on superyachts . Most have a customized spa menu and a crew member who doubles as a trained masseuse or beautician — and they're usually in high demand.

One captain said he'd implemented a booking system to ensure people weren't fighting for the same spots. A broker said sometimes masseuses would be so busy they wouldn't leave the small spa cabin for hours on end.

Related stories

So if you want to make the most of your relaxing time on board, reserve your pampering slot as soon as you get your welcome cocktail.

Pirates are more real than you'd think, and many superyachts have hidden safe rooms

While you might dress up as a fake pirate for an onboard theme party, there are very real ones — and other dangers — on the high seas.

In certain areas, including parts of the Indian Ocean and the Gulf of Aden, pirates are a cause of concern . In the Red Sea, owners are concerned about the Houthis .

Superyachts can come equipped with sonic weaponry, lockdown systems, and anti-drone protection. Builders are even designing safe rooms — which are apparently just as plush as the rest of the ship.

The longer the boat, the closer to $1 billion

While you can't judge a buyer based on appearances, you can judge them on the length of their boat.

One rule of thumb: If someone has a brand-new 50-meter vessel, chances are they have $1 billion to their name. If it's over 100 meters, expect the owner to have at least $2 billion. And for a boat bigger than that — like Jeff Bezos' 127-meter megayacht Koru — it takes many, many billions.

Money can't buy you everything

The world's biggest, most expensive yachts are custom-built by shipyards that produce only a handful of boats a year.

But no matter how many tens of millions of dollars clients are spending, there are things to which builders will refuse to say yes.

"In the end, the boat has our name," an executive from one of the world's biggest shipyards told BI.

They recalled a client who requested a yellow hull to match his Lamborghini . The shipyard declined, steering the client in another direction.

"If I don't like it, I don't build it. I finalize two or three contracts a year," another builder said. "If somebody can say your vessel is ugly, my reputation is bad."

Yacht crews are trained to make the impossible possible. A guest requests fresh caviar flown into the middle of the Caribbean? No problem. Fresh flowers every day while at sea? It'll cost you, but it can be done.

But they can't time travel, and captains and crew members say the thing that causes the most friction is when a client or owner wants to go from point A to point B — right now.

"The hardest request is when they want the boat in a place — yesterday," one captain said.

The best person to know? A friend with a superyacht

Superyachts are expensive to build and expensive to maintain . According to the industry standard, owning a superyacht will cost 10% of its new-build price annually. For a $100 million yacht, that's at least $10 million yearly going to crew, regular maintenance, insurance, fuel, and dockage.

Chartering, too, is costly . Beyond the list price, which can be hundreds of thousands a week, guests must pay for provisions, which are pegged at 35% of the charter fee, and are expected to tip between 10% and 20%.

So the most important unspoken rule of superyachting is actually that the only thing better than owning a superyacht is knowing someone else who does — and invites you along, of course.

Billionaire fights to dock his boat on water behind his house. His 164-foot boat, that is.

The love of the water, and a mega-yacht to enjoy it, is putting one resident at odds with village of north palm beach leaders..

yacht in a pool

For some people, the ultimate Florida lifestyle is a waterfront house , a private dock and a boat parked next to it. But what if that boat is a mega-yacht , and the mega-yacht stretches 164 feet?

That's the conundrum facing the Village of North Palm Beach.

This tiny community in northern Palm Beach County, with only 13,000 full-time residents, has an identity so tied to the water that a ship's steering wheel is the village's emblem.

But it's that love of the water that is putting one resident at odds with village leaders.

For the past several years, homeowner Michael Bozutto has been battling the village for the right to park his 164-foot Westport, dubbed Honey, behind a home he owns at 932 Shore Drive.

The house, built in 1961, is a one-story, ranch-style property with three bedrooms on a half-acre lot. Bozzuto paid $840,247 for the house in 2014, according to Palm Beach County property records.

Lawsuit rooted in dispute over where to dock mega-yacht

What makes this plain house special is its location. It's on a rare corner bordered on the north and east by navigable waters that provide access to the Atlantic Ocean via the Lake Worth Inlet. The east-facing dock is large enough to accommodate Bozzuto's motor yacht.

Since Bozutto bought Honey for an undisclosed sum a decade ago, he mostly has parked it at the Old Port Cove Marina, near Tiger Woods' 155-foot showy mega-yacht, ironically dubbed Privacy.

More recently, Bozzuto has wanted to park Honey alongside his Shore Drive house, one of four houses he owns in the village. While Bozzuto keeps some personal property at the Shore Drive house, he lives at a house he owns at Harbour Isles Court.

Village officials warned Bozzuto he can't park Honey at 932 Shore Drive because boats can only be parked on docks behind houses that are occupied by the homeowner.

But village rules do not define the word "occupied." For instance, the rules do not state that occupied means the house is a residence where the owner lives. Village rules also contain no restrictions on the size of boats that can be kept at private docks.

After years of pushing back against what he believes are fuzzy rules, Bozzuto in March filed a lawsuit against the village.

More: Cannonsport Marina sells for $58.5 million in big deal for tiny Palm Beach Shores

He alleged the municipality is illegally depriving him of his property rights because nothing in the village code prevents him from mooring Honey at his house. He is asking a Palm Beach County Circuit Court judge to rule that he has a constitutional right to dock Honey there.

Gregory Coleman, Bozzuto's West Palm Beach attorney, said the village has plenty of waterfront homes with yachts parked behind them. But Coleman said the village is illegally blocking Bozzuto from docking Honey at his house because the village is bending to pressure from a handful of neighbors who think the boat is too big.

The selective enforcement is wrong, said Coleman, a former president of the Florida Bar.

"He's a very under-the-radar guy who doesn't cause anybody any problems," Coleman said of Bozzuto. "He pays his property taxes, and he wants to be left alone by the village of North Palm Beach. Unfortunately, they are singling Mike out."

Neither Leonard Rubin, the village's longtime attorney, nor Village Manager Chuck Huff responded to requests for comment.

Eric Stettin, a Fort Lauderdale-based attorney who is representing the village in the Bozzuto lawsuit, said he could not comment on pending litigation.

What good is a man's castle if he can't have a boat in his moat?

Coleman's lawsuit describes the conflict as a battle over property rights, but real estate and yachting experts say it's also a sign of the times.

As wealthy new residents pour into the county wanting all the perks of the Sunshine State, they want a boat to go along with their waterfront homes and golf club memberships. Some longtime residents fear Palm Beach County is turning into a playground for billionaires, to the detriment of everyday people who also want to live in sunshine and peace.

This conflict between Old Florida and new money is an ever-present tension, but even seasoned yacht brokers say they've never seen interest in luxury yachts quite as strong as it is now.

More: Illegal boat slips are popping near Palm Beach Gardens. Residents want regulators to act

"What we've seen in the marketplace right after COVID in the yachting industry, and especially the superyacht segment, is the most incredible growth ever seen in the history of yachting to date," said Shannon McCoy, a luxury yacht advisor and broker with Worth Avenue Yachts in Palm Beach.

"A lot of people are moving here with serious money," added Pascal Savoy, U.S. managing director of Camper & Nicholsons International yacht brokers in Fort Lauderdale.

While in the past Palm Beach County was not considered lively enough for some buyers, Savoy said the county's growing sophistication is putting it on the map in a way never seen before.

"It's a mini-Monaco for us," Savoy said.

Prices for mega-yachts can range from $18 million to $60 million, or many times that, for the largest and most decked-out mega-yachts, Savoy said.

While some yachts can be glitzy, a 164-foot Westport is considered a more low-profile boat, Savoy added.

Michael Bozzuto's interests: Houses, boats and philanthropy

Bozzuto is no newcomer to North Palm Beach. He's been a resident of the village for 20 years.

He is the billionaire owner of a family-owned supermarket wholesaler in Connecticut, and an investor and philanthropist who likes to collect houses and yachts, Coleman said.

In addition to the four North Palm Beach houses and several yachts he owns, Bozzuto in February paid a whopping $31.1 million for a house in the Town of Palm Beach Shores. The house, which has two docks, sits just north of the Palm Beach/Lake Worth Inlet.

Twin City Mall: North Palm clears way for redevelopment, taller buildings at landmark site

Coleman said there is plenty of room for other boaters to navigate the waterway when Honey is parked at the Shore Drive house in North Palm Beach. And while other people may not have as large a yacht, there are other sizeable yachts parked on docks behind other North Palm Beach homes, too, he added.

At a 2017 village council meeting, then-Mayor Darryl Aubrey commented on the issue, according to the complaint.

"When I didn't live here full time, I had a boat sitting in my dock, I was gone nine months of the year. I don't see how you can say that someone has to be in a residence year-round, seems to be some interpretation of occupant, there would be an enormous number of violations," Aubrey said.

Another member of the village council asked if the village had a definition now, the complaint said.

Rubin, the village attorney, replied: "No, we don't," according to the lawsuit.

Palm Beach County's waterways run deep, and they are popular

The yacht docking dispute is particularly timely, given the scarcity of dock space for boats of all sizes.

The most convenient place to park a boat is on the water behind a house, brokers say. But not every waterway or channel can accommodate the draft, or depth, of a mega-yacht.

However, the dock behind Bozzuto's Shore Drive house can.

Not only is the Westport not known for its deep hulls, but the waterway also is typical of northern Palm Beach County, which boasts deep water and easy access to the ocean via the Lake Worth Inlet, said Coleman, a lifelong boater.

"In Palm Beach County, they have deeper water, and it allows people to have larger yachts," Savoy agreed.

But not every waterway is deep enough for every boat.

McCoy said she specializes in helping advise potential yacht owners about the county's varied water depths before they buy a house, if they plan to dock their yacht behind it.

If yacht owners don't have a private dock, the other option is a marina. But marina space is hard to find, with many dock berths reserved for months in advance, McCoy said.

Despite the challenges of owning a boat and finding a place to dock it, yacht brokers say demand continues.

They see interest continuing from business executives moving here with their families as they relocate their companies to Palm Beach County. There's also a growing demand for yachts among female buyers, McCoy added.

They also see younger mega-yacht buyers, some even in their early 30s. This is in sharp contrast to the mostly older buyers in the past, Savoy said.

Palm Beach County may not be as go-go as Miami-Dade County when it comes to showy ships, but if interest continues, "it's coming," Savoy said. "You're going to attract bigger yachts."

Put another way: "No one needs a boat, but everyone needs a boat," McCoy said. "It's the ultimate lifestyle."
