Executive Interior Yacht Design

The decades-long experience of the Specializing Master’s Degree Course in Yacht Design at the Politecnico di Milano has led to the creation of the new postgraduate course in Executive Interior Yacht Design dedicated to professionals and young graduates who intend to deepen their knowledge of nautical and naval outfitting with a focus on the Italian yacht and superyacht market. The course responds to the request of numerous nautical subcontracting companies and design studios, which in recent years have been looking for specialised figures in executive design to support the great growth that the Italian shipbuilding industry has been experiencing for the past five years.

The Executive Interior Yacht Design course at the Politecnico di Milano provides the tools to manage the design and construction process of naval and nautical interiors , from the project brief to the definition of the general plans and executive details of interior fittings, thanks to the integrated management of interior and exterior design languages, materials and on-board fitting techniques, aspects of ergonomics, naval engineering and construction techniques, and plant equipment. The course is aimed at graduates in architecture and interior design as well as professionals in the furniture sector, thanks to didactics designed to adapt to the needs of professionals, freelance designers and recent graduates.

Azimut @ MDW2024_Sketch by AMDL CIRCLE

Azimut Yachts presents “Mooring by the Moon”, an immersive installation curated by AMDL CIRCLE and Michele De Lucchi. Inspired by the Seadeck Yacht Series, beauty and technology blend for a sustainable future – which is here and now for Azimut.

In the evocative setting of the Bagni Misteriosi in Milan, Azimut’s “ Mooring by the Moon ” is an emotional journey through  beauty  and  sustainable innovation .

This  journey through installations consists of four acts  – a tribute to the theatrical vocation of the Bagni Misteriosi del Teatro Franco Parenti – which invites visitors to be surprised by the wonder of the natural world, seen as if for the first time from the terrace of a  boat illuminated by the reflections of a large moon, lying on the water in the heart of the city .

An unexpected environment comes together, in which the emotions awakened by the  rediscovery of nature  arouse the desire to protect it and share a  concrete commitment to preserve it  for future generations: “ The difference can and must be made here and now, not left to distant promises of a world to come or with a superficial approach to the topic of environmental sustainability. The yacht in the pool at Bagni Misteriosi is the emblem of our commitment: concrete, measurable and always present ”, explains  Giovanna Vitelli, Chair of the Azimut|Benetti Group .

The itinerary of installations, curated by  AMDL CIRCLE  and the architect  Michele De Lucchi , unfolds in  four stages  within the historic environments of the Bagni Misteriosi in Milan.

The first act –  Gentle by the Sea  – welcomes visitors into the suspended time of wonder where – far from the frenetic flow of everyday life – the sun rises and sets on the water while the sounds, colors and scents of the sea evoke the  gentle era  inaugurated by Azimut for a new, respectful  relationship between man and nature .

On the second stage –  The Sea Rocks  – innovation and technology are revealed at the service of beauty and a more sustainable present.  Large sculptures  created by AMDL CIRCLE and Michele De Lucchi with the alternative and recycled materials, the same ones used by Azimut to  reduce the environmental impact  of the Seadeck Series, guide visitors to discover the  multiple lives of matter : recovered fishing nets are regenerated, recreated and infinitely reshaped to become fabric, and 15,000 plastic bottles make up the soul of the Seadeck 6, the first model of the Series.

The third act –  The Seadeck Lounge  – encapsulates the philosophy of  Matteo Thun & Antonio Rodriguez , authors of the Seadeck Series interiors:  design for a  conscious  world , respectful of all the parties involved, human and environmental. The architects worked through subtraction, redefining the concept of luxury to bring out the “heart” of the environments and designing spaces for “feeling good”. The natural and recycled materials used have an important role, such as  cork  – the ancient Mediterranean material capable of spontaneous regeneration – which takes the place of teak in the external decking of the Seadeck Series.

The final act leads to  Seadeck 6  – the most efficient yacht ever built by Azimut and the embodiment of the course charted by the Shipyard  to reduce emissions and energy consumption . Moored in the heart of the Bagni Misteriosi, the boat is revealed to the public lying on the water in the shadow of the large moon, whose reflections enhance the lines designed by  Alberto Mancini  and the  Fun Island , a reinvented stern terrace that symbolizes a new lifestyle based on well-being. With the Seadeck Series, the journey back to nature is complete. A  reduction in CO2 emissions of up to 40%  is possible in a year of average use, representing the  first Low Emission Series in the world , here to make a difference on a broad scale.

Materia Natura , the theme of Fuorisalone 2024, is interpreted by Azimut, AMDL CIRCLE and Michele De Lucchi as an opportunity to place visitors in front of the majesty of nature – embodied by the large moon floating dreamily. As the Seadeck, which metaphorically opens to embrace the sea, so at the Bagni Misteriosi in Milan we rediscover an intimate connection with nature at the dawn of a new, gentle era.

The Buzz on Boat Shoes

The category of footwear created when Franklin D. Roosevelt was president is being reinterpreted and rediscovered.

A dark-brown pair of Sperry Top-Siders, left, next to a lighter-brown pair, on a dock.

By Guy Trebay

Sometimes fashion just seems like “Groundhog Day” with better outfits. Designers vanish only to reappear suddenly (looking at you, Alessandro Michele .) Trends sputter out and abruptly are back. Skinny jeans were cool until everyone was wearing oversize drop-crotch khakis — everyone, that is, except that cadre of teen style-setters intent on bringing back 2000s-era jeggings so bad they’re good.

Consider, in this vein, the boat shoe, echt signifier of all things preppy. All but defunct as an element of a stylish wardrobe, it has now become a hot item. This is “the year of the boat shoe,’’ says Vogue , which is far from alone in observing a proliferation of fashionable maritime footwear.

There they were on the Miu Miu spring 2024 runway in Paris, in what was widely considered one of Miuccia Prada’s best collections for that label in years. There, too, they were at Fendi’s fall 2024 men’s wear show in Milan, where the moccasin-style shoe had been stamped to look like crocodile. There they are on virtually every page of a new catalog from the revived hipster heritage brand Quaker Marine Supply Co. , a label whose style paragon is not Jacob Elordi but “Papa” Hemingway.

“Every few years there’s another wave,” Lisa Birnbach, 65, the author of “ The Official Preppy Handbook ” and its sequel “ True Prep ,” said of boat shoes like Sperry Top-Siders or the similarly beloved, if nautically inappropriate, L.L. Bean Camp Moccasins (they scuff decks).

Ms. Birnbach’s “Handbook,” originally published in 1980 as a satirical take on upper-class folkways, went on to become a canonical text, right up there with “Take Ivy,” a slender volume of photographs from 1965 depicting long-ago Ivy League guys. Both are inevitably cited whenever preppy trends cycle through again. And each time that happens, Ms. Birnbach knows her phone will ring. “My telephone number must be on the bathroom wall at Condé Nast and Hearst,” she said on a call from her home north of Los Angeles.

The renewed interest in boat shoes could be inspired, Ms. Birnbach said, “by a new retailer selling Top-Siders, a designer that discovers them, an Instagram or TikTok person that puts themselves together with boat shoes in a clever way.” Regardless, she said, it always seems as if people are seeing them for the first time, which is odd for a category of footwear created when Franklin D. Roosevelt was president.

It was in 1935 that Paul Sperry, the inventor of Sperry Top-Siders, is said to have slipped on the deck of his sailboat and fallen overboard into the Long Island Sound. He later experienced a soggy epiphany, out of which came a shoe for boating with simple leather uppers and incised rubber soles that mimicked the ridges on his cocker spaniel’s paws. (Mr. Sperry patented the process of making those grooves, termed “siping,” in 1937.)

The Top-Sider is “the Platonic ideal of the shoe,” said Jason Jules, the author of “ Black Ivy ,” a 2021 book examining how generations of Black men adopted, improvised upon and made their own the elements of a sartorial code that originated among a largely white Ivy League elite.

“The sudden re-emergence of the boat shoe in fashion is partly a reaction to sneaker fatigue,” Mr. Jules, 60, said on a call from his home in Paraguay. “With sneakers, you’re so overwhelmed by details that you need a manual to know how to wear them.”

Conversely, as any yachtie can testify, Top-Siders are so elementary in their design they barely qualify as a shoe. And though the style has been reinterpreted in pop colorways, metallics and subject to cool designer affiliations (most notably a fashion-bro-friendly collaboration with Chris Echevarria of Blackstock & Weber), it is the classic version that continues to resonate.

“It’s the style iconography,” said Jonathan Frankel, the president of the Aldo Group, whose portfolio includes Sperry. “It ain’t broke, so don’t fix it.’”

On a recent phone call from his company’s headquarters in Florence, Ala., the designer Billy Reid , 59, noted that he’d bought his first pair of Top-Siders at 15 and then “wore them until they were held together with duct tape and Shoe Goo.” Now, he said, seeing 20-somethings wearing Top-Siders “blows my mind.”

Though Mr. Reid replaced his boat shoes with some regularity through the years, eventually he consigned them to the back of his closet. And there they remained until “my 20-year-old son, Walton, started stealing them.”

Therein lies the paradox of the boat shoe, according to Kevin McLaughlin, the owner of Quaker Marine. Styles like Top-Siders are rooted in function, not fashion. Yet they are “simultaneously always coming into fashion again,” he said.

For Walton Reid, Mr. Reid’s 20-year-old son and a musician, the anti-fashion vibe of a boat shoe is intrinsic to its appeal.

“The way style works now, you can take inspiration from a utilitarian classic and put whatever spin on it you want,” he said. “I can walk into a thrift store, find a pair of Dior jeans somebody may have died in, wear them with a suit jacket and boat shoes and, even though it shouldn’t work, it does.”

the literacy pen helps illiterate people to start writing and learning to read, instantly

By the world literacy foundation and media.monks.

The Literacy Pen by The World Literacy Foundation and Media.Monks is a groundbreaking educational device designed to enable illiterate individuals to start writing and learning to read, instantly. Open source and compatible with all standard pens on the market, it utilizes an innovative method that combines technology with the essential elements of traditional processes. Users only need to connect the device to their pen and speak their desired words into the built-in microphone. The voice dictation technology then accurately transcribes these words onto the digital screen, letter by letter, facilitating direct copying onto paper and enhancing the learning process for all. The device further ensures an effective learning experience by focusing on key aspects of literacy development, such as written and visual repetition. Its compact size, light weight, and ergonomic shape additionally make it accessible and comfortable for users of all ages and abilities, further promoting inclusivity in education.

the open source literacy pen enhances inclusivity in education

In 2024, UNESCO’s report revealed a staggering reality: 773 million individuals worldwide grapple with illiteracy, a crisis that casts a profound shadow over lives, shaping opportunities, livelihoods, and self-perception. It acts as a significant barrier to economic advancement, limiting access to better-paying jobs and perpetuating cycles of poverty. Moreover, illiteracy obstructs civic engagement, impeding individuals’ participation in communities and the exercise of their rights. Socially, it fosters exclusion and marginalization, hindering full integration into society and equal access to opportunities. These consequences resonate beyond individuals, impacting families, communities, and nations alike, underscoring the urgent need for a new, effective literacy method.

This is due to the fact that current approaches, such as Peer Teaching or literacy programs, falter in the face of accessibility challenges rooted in social and psychological circumstances, prompting individuals to discontinue the learning process. Non-profit organization The World Literacy Foundation sets out to tackle this, striving to ensure that every child, regardless of geographic location, has the opportunity to acquire literacy skills and resources to reach their full potential. The Literacy Pen, a small devices that latches on to any standard pen, supports this endeavor with its technological features and accessible design.

AC Milan and Off-White™ Reveals New T-Shirt in Support of Fondazione Milan

AC Milan and Off-White™ Reveals New T-Shirt in Support of Fondazione Milan Fashion

AC Milan and Off-White™ aren’t just acquaintances, but friends. The luxury label became AC Milan’s new style and culture curator in 2022 and has since tossed up uniforms and special edition t-shirts for the soccer club. Now the two are deepening their relationship with the new limited-edition “I SUPPORT SPORT FOR CHANGE” t-shirt.

The new limited-edition tee supports Fondazione Milan’s initiative to empower at-risk girls in Nairobi through soccer. Specifically, the initiative is in partnership with the non-profit Alice for Children, which is focused on supporting at-risk women and children in Kenya. One of the main ways it does so is by giving girls the opportunity to train and practice soccer.
