The first yacht club established on Belfast Lough was, as already stated in these pages, the Royal Northern. That club, as we have seen, after forming a branch on the Clyde, developed into a Clyde club—at any rate, the Clyde section seceded from the original one, and settled at Rothesay. The Royal Ulster, the senior club in the Lough at the present time, was founded in the year 1866. The club soon came into prominence, and its regattas for many years have been visited by the big-class racing yachts which do the round of the principal coast fixtures. Before the season became as crowded as it now is with regattas, vessels were in the habit of crossing to Belfast Lough from the Clyde immediately after the ‘fortnight.’
The clubhouse is situated about a mile out from Bangor on the south side of the Lough. For a time an ordinary dwelling-house served the purpose of club quarters, but as the organization flourished and increased in prosperity, larger premises became necessary, and the present handsome club-house was built. It stands on an eminence, whence a magnificent view of the Lough can be obtained. The yachts taking part in the races are never out of sight, while by making an ascent to the tower one looks down on the Lough as on to a chess-board, and every move of the competing vessels can be watched, and oftentimes anticipated. From this elevation one can see new breezes coming into the Lough, or perhaps can see that a certain boat, unless she puts about very soon, will be right out of the breeze she has been holding. In other words, from this coign of vantage one can often see what is about to happen before those aboard the yachts themselves.
The club came into great prominence in connection with the more recent America Cup matches, as it was through the Royal Ulster that Sir Thomas Lipton sent his challenges on three different occasions to the New York Yacht Club, and the representative committee on this side was formed of members of this club.
Belfast Lough has often been referred to as the cradle of the one-design classes, and this form of racing has certainly taken root and flourished in the district. There are several different classes, and the club provides a very full programme of races during the season for the local boats. The competition among the local craft is very keen. The boats in the biggest class are excellent little craft. There is a class of nearly the same dimensions in Dublin Bay, and a feature of the annual regattas is the meeting of representatives of these two classes, between which there is the keenest rivalry.
The club-house is an excellently arranged building, and, in, addition to all the ordinary requirements of a club, contains a number of bedrooms on the top story, which are in great demand at regatta times for members coming from a distance. On the landing of the principal staircase there is an interesting relic of a memorable accident, in the tiller of the ill-fated Valkyrie II ., which was sunk on the Clyde. There is an inscription on it as follows: ‘Tiller of Valkyrie II . Presented to the R.U.Y.C. by D. C. Kemp. At the start of the race for the Muir Memorial Challenge Cup, Mudhook Regatta, Hunter’s Quay, N.B., on 5th July, 1894, the Valkyrie II was sunk after being in collision with the Satanita .
General Committee: Tony Hennessy A couple of months ago, I had the opportunity to play a very pleasant 9 holes of golf at the Woodlands Golf Club with some of my fellow members on the RBYC Social Committee. We then followed the game with a very pleasant lunch within the golf clubs dining facilities. The social committee had arranged this outing via our club’s reciprocal club rights program which is available to most membership categories within our club.
It dawned upon me how I had personally under appreciated the additional value adds that our club membership offers. So, I thought I would use this forum to highlight the clubs that RBYC has reciprocal rights with the intention of encouraging members to maximise their memberships value. Woodlands Golf Club is one of the country’s premier golf courses and under normal circumstances, a course that I would unlikely ever get to play. Now, golf may not be your interest, but there are plenty of other clubs, including many prestigious local and international yacht clubs that RBYC has reciprocal rights with. Please see list below. Finally, I would always recommend contacting the Club office first to understand the formalities as I understand some of the clubs listed below require a letter of introduction which the club can arrange for you.
Yours Aye Tony Hennessy

The king’s royal hussars.
The King’s Royal Hussars is the successor regiment to the 10th., 11th. and 14th. Light Dragoons, the formation of which was approved by King George I in July 1715 as part of an army tasked to counter the Jacobite rebellion. Known as the light cavalry, later the Light Brigade, they were subsequently amalgamated with the 11th. Hussars.
In July 2011, the KRH trooped its Guidon through Hamble and beat retreat at the Royal Southern Yacht Club, the precursor to a unique Twinning arrangement, engendered by the strong historical connection that they shared in the flamboyant figure of the late Lt.Gen. James Brudenell, 7th. Earl of Cardigan. He commanded the 11th. from 1840-1854 and was concurrently Commodore of the Club from 1847-1868. His Lordship is reputed to have flown the colours of the Club on his yacht Dryad, moored in Balaclava Harbour for the duration of the Crimean War, where he famously commanded the Light Brigade and led it’s famous “Charge”.
This Twinning Arrangement seeks to establish and maintain, in perpetuity, friendly relations between Club and Regiment and, through that friendship, promote sailing, social, educational and youth exchanges, and share a supportive interest in each other’s activities as appropriate.
Most recently, in April 2015 a KRH crew sailed alongside the Royal Southern in Antigua Sailing Week and in July 2015, Members of the Club attended the Regiment’s Tercentenary Parade at their Tidworth garrison, commanded by Lt.Col. Justin Kingsford.

HMS Blazer is a commissioned warship in the Royal Navy and is the seventh ship to carry the name. One of fourteen Archers Class P2000 patrol vessels and part of the 1st. Patrol Boat Squadron, she was laid up in GRP at Watercraft Marine in Shoreham and having been completed by Vosper Thornycroft, went down the ways in 1998 and entered service with the University Royal Naval Unit (URNU) in 1990. At 20 metres LOA, she tips the scales at 50 tonnes, is powered by twin Rolls Royce turbo-diesels and operates with a permanent crew of five.
She is primarily dedicated to URNU training, the objective being to provide high quality sea training experiences to university undergraduates, developing seamanship, teambuilding and leadership skills. Wider tasking includes officer cadet training with the Britannia Royal Naval College, Dartmouth, VVIP visits and security patrols and with a modest 1.8 metre draft, often shows the White Ensign in places that larger vessels cannot reach.
Blazer is the URNU at Southampton Solent University, Portsmouth University and Southampton Institute, is currently undergoing a major refit and after her re-commissioning, it is hoped to welcome her and her crew to the Yacht Haven under her current Commanding Officer, Lt. Nick Palmer RN, and his successors.

The capital city of Voronezh oblast: Voronezh .
Voronezh Oblast is a federal subject of Russia, part of the Central Federal District. Voronezh is the capital city of the region.
The population of Voronezh Oblast is about 2,288,000 (2022), the area - 52,216 sq. km.

The first people began to settle in the territory of the present Voronezh region in the Paleolithic age, about 30 thousand years ago. In the Iron Age, this region became part of Scythia. Then the Sarmatians came to replace the Scythians. It is assumed that they gave the name to the Don River.
In the early Middle Ages, the Alans, the descendants of the Sarmatians, moved on to a settled way of life, mastered the skills of urban culture and entered into a complex symbiosis with nomads (the Bulgars and the Khazars). In the 7th century, the steppe part of the region became the territory of the Khazar Kaganate.
In the 9th-10th centuries, the Slavs began to settle in the north of the region. Central and southern areas were controlled by nomadic tribes. In the first half of the 13th century, during the Mongol invasion, the ancient Russian settlements were destroyed, and Voronezh land for several centuries turned into a so-called “wild field” crossed by the main Tatar roads - Nogai and Kalmius roads.
In the 15th century, several districts up to the Khopyor River, the Vorona River and the mouth of the Voronezh River were part of the Ryazan principality, but the Russian settlements here were few in number. Between the Russian territory and the Tatar nomads lay a vast, devastated by nomadic raids, neutral buffer land.
More historical facts…
In 1521, the Ryazan principality became part of the Moscow state, which opened the way for the beginning of the Russian colonization of these territories. The Cossacks began to form from the Christian population of the region that assimilated certain elements of the culture of nomads.
In 1585, in place of the Cossack village, Voronezh was founded as a fortress of the Moscow state on the border of the Wild Field. For more than 50 years Voronezh was the only town on the territory of the present Voronezh region. Up to the 17th century, the Tatar raids on the Voronezh land continued.
In 1696, by decision and with the personal participation of Peter I, a shipyard was built on Voronezh land for the construction of the first Russian fleet - the foothold for the development of the Black Sea region. From here the Azov campaigns of Peter I began. The centers of Russian colonization in the east of the region were the towns of Borisoglebsk (1698) and Novokhopersk (1716).
In 1711, (after the loss of Azov), Voronezh became a provincial town, the administrative center of the Azov gubernia (province). In the 18th century, the development of the entire territory of the region began. In 1725, the province received the name of Voronezh.
Voronezh Governorate became one of the main bread baskets of the Russian Empire. In the 1860-1870s, railways passed through the territory of the region and connected Central Russia with South Ukraine, the North Caucasus and the Trans-Volga. The region’s economy remained largely agrarian.
In 1934, Voronezh Oblast was established. In 1937, Tambov Oblast was singled out of the Voronezh region. During the Second World War, it became the scene of fierce battles. The city of Voronezh was almost completely destroyed. In 1954, large western and northern territories were transferred to Belgorod and Lipetsk oblasts. In 1957, the boundaries of Voronezh Oblast took the current form.
In the mid-1960s, the Novovoronezh nuclear power plant was built, the Stavropol-Moscow gas pipeline passed through the territory of the region. Voronezh became a major center of the country’s military-industrial complex. In 1972, the Voronezh reservoir was created.
