KATARA Yacht – The Extravagant $400 Million Superyacht

At a length of 124 meters (408 ft) the KATARA yacht is currently considered the 23rd biggest yacht in the world.

However, if measured by volume she would rank even higher with space for somewhere between 28 to 35 guests as well as 60 to 90 crew members.

This stunning vessel represents one of the big mysteries of the yachting world as not much is known about her interior and exact specifications.

However, with the size of a small cruise ship the interior of this mega yacht is most likely filled with lavish luxuries.

KATARA yacht interior

The exact setup and interior remain unknown to the public. However, she is rumored to have a large beach club, multiple gyms, a beauty salon, elevators, and several pools onboard.

Her main saloon appears to stretch across two floors and is thought to be the largest room on the vessel.

Fourteen cabins for an estimated of 28 to 35 guests are available on board although the exact layout and setup of the yacht remain unknown.

The small number of photos depicting the interior suggests it has a traditional design with classic charm.

High-end marble with golden accents is complemented by beige furnishings and warm wooden tones throughout the vessel.

The interior was composed by the Parisian interior designer Alberto Pinto who passed away only two years after the yacht set sail for the first time.

His work specialized in motor yachts, jets, and luxury hotels and the KATARA yacht became one of his most well-known projects.

Specifications

The KATARA yacht has a length of 124 meters (408 ft) and an impressive 19-meter (62.5 ft) beam making her one of the largest superyachts in the world.

She is built from steel and aluminum and her name is thought to either stand for festivities or the Arabic name for a water droplet.

She sails under the Qatari flag and her home port lies in the capital Doha although she was built in Hamburg, Germany.

At 7922 gross tons, she is a very large vessel that would normally pass for a smaller cruise ship.

However, with space for only an estimated of 28 to 35 guests, there is a plethora of space on board for luxury facilities.

The four radar domes are arguably her most recognizable feature and she has been spotted in ports around the world including the United Kingdom, Montenegro, the Caribbean as well as the United States.

With speeds of up to 20 knots, she is by no means as slow as her impressive size might suggest. Powered by dynamic MTU engines she can reach a range of up to 5,000 nautical miles.

She has an estimated price tag of US $400 million with an additional $25 to 40 million in annual running costs.

katara sunset

The exterior of the KATARA yacht was designed by Espen Øino one of the most well-known naval architects and superyacht designers of all time.

Although she wasn’t his largest vessel when considering length, she was one of the largest in volume at 7922 gross tons.

Despite her size, she has a distinct lack of outdoor space with most of her decks being covered, possibly for privacy reasons.

The bow is one of the few spaces on her with an open-air deck that includes seating and dining areas but no pool.

While rumored to have several pools and jacuzzis on board all of them appear to be located either inside or in covered areas.

Only on the upper deck, a small jacuzzi can be seen which is located under a large awning.

On the stern of the vessel, a large helipad is located which is serviced by a Eurocopter with the registration A7-HMD.

Depending on the configuration this aircraft can carry up to 13 passengers plus crew. This version of the Eurocopter 155 was specially modified for performance in hot climates and high altitudes.

This gorgeous vessel is equipped with a high-end underwater lighting system making her an even more impressive sight at night.

Toys and equipment

As is the case with the interior not much is known about the exact equipment and toys that this yacht carries. She is said to have at least five jet skis as well as several water bobs.

She carries at least four small tenders as well as being accompanied by a larger chase boat named KATARA II.

This vessel is estimated to have a length of 20 m with three guest cabins which are able to host a further six guests plus two crew. Her top speed is 40 knots.

She is equipped with a modern stabilizer system which provides her guests with high levels of comfort when at anchor or at sea.

Due to the large helipad on board, her owners are able to board with complete privacy which appears to be one of her most appreciated features.

Additional information

When she was launched in 2010 she was one of the largest superyachts in the world. During her construction with Lurssen Yachts in Hamburg, she was known under the secretive name Project Crystal .

Over the course of the past eleven years, she has slipped in the rankings but remains one of the 65 yachts in the world over 100 meters in length that are in operation today.

In 2016 there was a small fire in the engine room while she was in port in Montenegro. While the fire was minor and could be extinguished in less than 15 minutes she was still sent to Lurssen Yachts in Hamburg for renovation works on the interior.

This vessel is currently in private ownership and is therefore not available for sale or charter.

katara-yacht-exterior

Known as Project Crystal by her builder, this 124 metre yacht’s name was unveiled as Katara upon her launch. Katara, hull number 13656, was built by the Lürssen shipyard in Bremen and spent her first full season in the Caribbean. She has one helipad and carries both her tenders and her SOLAS rescue boats in davits port and starboard. She flies a Qatari flag and her home port is Doha, which means her name is more likely a translation of the word for “celebration” than a reference to the female waterbender in the film, Avatar, although that works, too. She likely belongs to the new young emir.

Katara measures 124.40 metres in length. She has a deck material of teak.

Katara has a steel hull with an aluminium superstructure.

For over twenty-five years Espen Oeino International has been hard at work designing custom motor yachts for an international clientele from Japan in the East to Seattle in the West.

Things To Do

Top things to do in Katara Cultural Village

Located at the point where the Middle East meets Asia, the compact peninsular state of Qatar has long been a melting pot of cultures.  With a staggering array of cultural venues, including museums , galleries and public art , Qatar offers a potent mix of tradition and modernism.  Spelled in the ancient manner, Katara is a self-styled cultural village nestled between the gleaming financial district of West Bay, and the half-moon towers of The Pearl residential neighbourhood.  Bordered by a vast beach on one side, and the twin Katara Hills on the other, Katara is Doha ’s go-to destination for art, culture and cuisine .  In no particular order, these are the top things to do here:

1. Katara Mosque:

Visit the katara mosque.

Designed by Turkey’s Zeynep Fadilloglu, who is believed to be the first female architect to specialise in mosques, the mosque features Persian and Turkish tile and enamel work in shades of blue and gold, proffering a stark contrast to the surrounding buildings.  With décor inspired by the Dolmabahçe Palace in Istanbul, the minaret, dome, and prayer niche (mihrab), draw from famous mosques across the Muslim world.  Next to the mosque, one can see the unmistakable pigeon towers – oblong structures with holes and perches for pigeons.

Katara Cultural Village

Visit the Gold Mosque

The second mosque in Katara, this is smaller, but no less eye catching.  Facing the amphitheatre, it is covered with gold tiling, which glints in the sun.

Katara Cultural Village

Discover the Amphitheatre

Spread over 3,275 sqm, this classical Greek style amphitheatre reflects Islamic influences, particularly in its arched entrances. Accommodating up to 5000 spectators, it affords stellar views of the sea on one side and the cultural village on the other.  The Force of Nature, an art installation depicting Mother Nature hurtling the world with a piece of cloth, stands between the amphitheatre and the water, showing humanity’s powerlessness in the face of nature.

Where is the Katara Cultural Village?

Katara Cultural Village’s location is found about 15 minutes north of the popular Souq Waqif area. It is within walking distance of the seashore, which we will talk more about below.

What To Wear at Katara Cultural Village

Qatar is a Muslim country, so that means that travelers should keep modesty in mind during their travels.

I have an entire post dedicated to what to wear in Qatar . But, here are a few highlights on how to dress, particularly for the ladies:

katara yacht doha

A Flowy Kimono

I highly recommend wearing a  kimono , made with long and loose fabric, to cover your hips and waist. Wearing one that is fairly opaque is ideal!

This pairs well with the tank top and leggings listed below. Get yours here!

katara yacht doha

A lightweight tank top is my personal go-to in hot climates. Something like  this simple option  provides a not-too-low neckline and comes in many different color choices.

Note that I do not recommend bare shoulders in Doha, but rather wearing this under the kimono above.. Get yours here!

katara yacht doha

A Long Maxi Skirt

Skirts like this one are a great balance of comfort in the heat and modesty. It is perfect for walking around Doha or entering the mosques and museums.

The flowy fabric will keep you cool yet conservatively dressed. Get yours here!

Comfortable Leggings

A pair of thick black leggings are great for under your kimono, too.  These leggings  are soft yet sturdy, and made from opaque fabric.

Bonus – you can wear theme for hotel gym workouts, too.  Get yours here!

A Sheer Scarf

I personally love sheer lightweight scarves  like this for anywhere in the Middle East, as they are not so thick and hot in the heat.

I own this exact scarf in several colors and love it! Get yours here.

The Best Things To Do in Katara Cultural Village, Doha

I absolutely loved visiting the Katara Cultural Village! It was one of my major Doha highlights , without a doubt.

Whether you have just one day in Doha , or an extended vacation, I highly recommend visiting. It has outdoor activities, indoor activities, and enough to keep you occupied for a few hours.

Here are all the best things to see at the Katara Cultural Village!

Monica in front of the Pigeon Towers, one of the best Things To Do in Katara Cultural Village in Doha.

1. The Pigeon Towers

The stunning sand-colored Pigeon Towers are what first captured my attention within Katara Cultural Village.

They are the most photographed area in Katara Cultural Village, and for good reason!

This monument from the past depicts how Qatari farmers would raise pigeons. Primarily, they would use their droppings as fertilizer for their crops.

The design is beautiful, featuring patterned holes detailing each tower as well as perches for pigeons to come and go. While you visit, you are likely to see many birds flying around you, as I did!

If you are just as taken by these structures as I am, and want to learn more, check out my Pigeon Towers guide . It is a must see!

Monica sitting outside of the Katara Mosque, one of the best Things To Do in Katara Cultural Village in Doha.

2. The Katara Mosque

My other favorite sight within Katara Cultural Village is the gorgeously tiled Katara Mosque.

This mosque was designed by Zainab Fadil Oglu, a female architect from Turkey . Look closely and you will see both Persian and Turkish architectural elements throughout the design. It is truly breathtaking!

The outside walls feature detailed blue and green tiles, which in my opinion is the most unique and notable element. The prayer room and minaret dome were inspired by many mosques around the Muslim world.

You can enter this one-of-a-kind mosque outside of prayer times. Be aware, photo and video are not permitted inside.

Pro Tip: Ladies, carry your scarf or shawl with you all around Doha. You never know when you’ll want to enter a mosque, and head coverings are required!

Just as the name suggests, this beautiful mosque is embellished with shimmering gold tiles. They cover the entire facade and minaret.

When the light hits just right, the mosque is absolutely glowing!

The golden mosque is an example of typical Ottoman Empire-style architecture. It is absolutely beautiful, and something you must see on your visit!

4. The Arab Postal Museum

The Arab Postal Stamp Museum is a free and easy stop to your list of places to visit at the Katara Cultural Village. This small museum exhibits an impressive collection of stamps from 22 different Arab countries.

The stamps depict everything from historical figures to natural wonders in the Arab world. One of the highlights is a section dedicated to Qatar’s postal history, which gives an interesting glimpse into the country’s development over the years.

5. The Katara Amphitheatre

Don’t miss the Katara Amphitheatre, a must-see within Katara Village.

Even if there are no live events happening during your stay, it is well worth a visit just to see the architecture. With a seating capacity of about 5,000 people, the amphitheatre is a stunning hybrid of Islamic and classical Greek styles.

Visitors can freely enter and explore the round theatre during the day just to catch a glimpse of it.

Built in 2008 and located at the heart of Katara Village, this impressive venue hosts some of Doha’s world-class performances and events.

Pro Tip: When visiting Qatar, both men and women should plan to dress conservatively. For women, this means long comfy pants , a loose and flowy kimono , and a scarf for entering mosques. Foe more details, check out my what to wear in Qatar guide.

6. The Katara Art Center

The Katara Art Center aims to engage and inspire visitors and artists alike. Founded in 2011, the KAC provides a creative space more than worthy of a visit.

The exhibitions in the gallery rotate, so there is always something new to see here. The KAC is also dedicated to helping artists to grow and evolve, as well as hosting art events and classes.

Consider taking a class, attending an event, or just strolling through the gallery.

The little planetarium opened in late 2018 and features exhibits for adults and children alike.

“Al Thuraya” is the Pleiades star cluster, which is visible from anywhere on the planet. It is one of the most important star clusters followed by Arabs since the ancient times.

Inside, you can explore models of the planets, a museum, a gallery, and more. Interesting information about influential Arab astronomers is also exhibited.

How to get to the Katara Cultural Village

You have a few options for getting to Katara from almost anywhere in Doha.

First and foremost, the closest Metro stop to service this area is the Katara Metro Station on the Red Line. The Metro is super easy to navigate – I wrote more about it here . However, if you want to visit before or after the Metro is running, these re your other options.

Take a tour . If you prefer to have a stress free trip, you can book a tour and have transportation included. I highly recommend this Doha city tour , which stops not only at Katara Cultural Village, but also the Corniche, Souq Waqif, and more. Book your tour here!

Take an Uber. Uber operates all around Doha and I used it frequently. Sometimes I needed to travel earlier than the Metro opened and other times I valued speed over cost.

Hire a taxi. Taxis are easy to find in Doha. You can also have your hotel arrange one for you in advance. Ladies, check out my solo female taxi tips if you are traveling alone.

What is the meaning of Katara in Qatar?

The name Katara means “a place where people gather” in Arabic, and this spot is true to its name. The Village was built to celebrate Qatar’s historical and cultural heritage, and it is indeed a place where locals and tourists gather.

Whether you’re a first-timer or a regular visitor, there’s always something new and exciting to discover at Katara.

How much is Katara Cultural Village?

Katara Cultural Village is completely free to enter and walk around. Many of the indoor attractions, like the planetarium and Postal Stamp Museum are also free.
