Video shows great white shark off Sarasota coast check out boat near whale carcass
The death of sperm whale that had beached itself on a sandbar off Venice Beach, Florida March 10 led to an interesting great white shark encounter with a boat a week later.
After a necropsy was completed on the 44-foot, 70,000-pound whale, its remains were towed at least 10 miles off the Sarasota County coast.
Great white sharks are opportunistic eaters, whose diet consists of fish, invertebrates, and marine mammals, according to NOAA Fisheries . That includes occasionally scavenging a dead whale.
Such was the case when boaters near the whale carcass came face-to-face with a great white shark that headbutted a camera and investigated the boat's motor before swimming over to the whale carcass and tearing into it.
According to WFLA , the encounter was captured on video by Brian Jung on March 17, who told the news outlet, “We located the carcass and there were three great white sharks eating off the blubber on the whale.”
Other great white sharks surfaced off Sarasota coast
Several sharks , tracked by the research group OCEARCH , have pinged off Sarasota's coast recently.
On March 5, a 10-foot 5-inch, 600-pound white shark nicknamed Rose , pinged in Sarasota waters.
Penny , a 10-foot 3-inch, 522-pound white shark pinged near Sarasota on Jan. 11 .
Do great white sharks swim around Florida?
Yes. Great white sharks migrate south, including Florida , when the water gets cold and food sources become scarce up north, according to OCEARCH chief scientist Dr. Bob Hueter .
Think of them as the snowbirds of sharks.
Most of them tend to stay away from the beaches in continental shelf waters, Hueter said.
Most shark attacks happen in Florida
There were 69 documented unprovoked shark attacks around the globe in 2023. The U.S. led the world with 36 attacks and Florida again was the state with the most bites at 16.
Florida shark attacks by county:
- Volusia County: 8
- Brevard County : 2
- St. Lucie County : 2
- Miami-Dade County: 1
- Palm Beach County : 1
- Escambia County : 1
- Pinellas County: 1
While the U.S. has the most attacks, South Africa has the most shark-related fatalities.
Great white shark facts
Here are some things to know about white sharks, according to NOAA Fisheries :
- White sharks grow slowly. Males mature at around 26 years old and females at around 33 years old. Life expectancy is difficult to determine but is estimated to be between 30 and 70 years.
- White sharks are about 4 feet long at birth but can grow up to about 20 feet long and weigh over 4,000 pounds.
- White sharks are partially warm-blooded and can maintain their internal body temperature above that of the surrounding water. This allows them to be more active in cooler waters than cold-blooded species.

All aboard S.S. Facebook.
Mark Zuckerberg has reportedly gifted himself a $300 million megayacht, dubbed “Launchpad,” ahead of his 40th birthday.
The staggering 387-foot-long vessel was seen floating at Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., after arriving at its berth earlier this week, The Sun reported Thursday.
The multi-layered luxury ship’s sleek exterior was designed by Espen Øino International and boasts a steel hull and an aluminum superstructure, according to SuperYacht Times.
Reportedly ranking as the 45th largest yacht in the world, the interiors are just as aesthetically pleasing and reportedly executed by Zuretti Interior Design company, a France-based company specializing in unique and custom yacht design.
The breathtakingly beautiful floater stands out with a navy blue theme matching an American flag perched proudly on its wood-paneled stern.
There are several outdoor areas where the social media maven will be able to relax with his family and the indoor levels feature glass paneling allowing for tons of natural light.

The Feadship-built yacht, built in 2022, can comfortably fit 24 guests aboard, requires a crew of 48, and is said to cost $30 million a year for upkeep and usage, according to Superyachtfan.com .

Boatworld insiders have been buzzing with speculation that Zuckerberg is the owner of the newly minted mega-cruise ever since it made its main voyage from the Netherlands last week.
The tech titan was spotted touring the Russian-commissioned megayacht in early March, though the impressive boat didn’t arrive stateside until this week due to sanctions, according to The Sun.
The website reported that Zuckerberg purchased the pricey yacht – along with its own $30 million partner boat — most likely as an early 40th birthday present to himself.
The boat reportedly traveled to Florida after being granted special permission to be imported just weeks ahead of Zuckerberg’s birthday on May 14.
Zuckerberg’s yacht is just 30 feet shorter than the length of fellow billionaire Jeff Bezos’ 417-foot megayacht Koru, which the Amazon boss snagged for a whopping $500 million.
Zuckerberg’s rep did not immediately respond to Page Six’s request for comment.

A look at the most expensive superyachts at the Palm Beach yacht show and their insane features, from basketball courts on deck to ice baths and saunas
- The Palm Beach International Boat Show kicks off later this week.
- Eight megayachts are expected to be on display for would-be buyers and charter customers.
- These are the show's biggest yachts — and how many millions of dollars they are going for.
The Palm Beach International Boat Show — the yacht world's flashiest event stateside — is returning this year with over 800 boats for both deep-pocketed potential owners and window shoppers to peruse.
While it's impossible to know what exactly will be on display until the show begins on Thursday, it's expected that eight megayachts — generally defined as ships over 60 meters long — will be docked at the show and at nearby marinas like the Rybovich Marina in the ritzy Florida town.
Some of these are for sale at eye-popping prices, but others are available to charter in case you fancy living like a billionaire for a week or two this summer (and if you have six figures to spare on a vacation).
These are the eight biggest yachts that will be at the Palm Beach International Boat Show and nearby marinas, in size order.

Price: $60 million (or from $567,000 a week to charter) Special features: Massage and beauty room, private library
Likely the largest yacht for sale (not just charter) at the show, the Talisman C is a 2011 six-bedroom boat. The owner's cabin comes with an en suite bathroom, dressing room, private library, and crystal chandeliers.

There's an expansive suite of fitness features, including a basketball court (don't shoot that hoop too hard!), a personal trainer on staff, boxing equipment, and a handful of machines. For post-workout winddowns, there's a spa with a steam room and onboard masseuse. And for entertainment, there's both an outdoor and indoor cinema, and a disco club.

Price: From $707,600 a week in the summer and $650,000 a week in the winter Special features: Sauna, helipad, banana boat
This 2021 superyacht is named after Triumph motorcycles — a reported favorite of her rumored owner, British businessman Chris Dawson — and even has one on display as an art piece in the upper deck's lounge. The primary suite is 1,400 square feet and has its own study , and there's a sauna, an indoor-outdoor gym, a helipad, and a massage room spread among her six decks.
She boasts an "armada of water toys," including two kinds of Jet Skis, electric water bikes, and a banana boat.
Seanna: 64.5 meters
Price: $54,000,000 (or from $462,000 a week to charter) Special features: marble foyer, movie room, sundeck pool
The recently refurbished Seanna is available for sale and charter.
Her indoor-outdoor gym is on sea level so that passengers can take a dip after a session with the onboard personal trainer. There's also a sundeck pool, a helipad, a two-room massage facility, and, for the more cerebral guests, a library with an electric fireplace.
There are a number of toys on board, including a popular water trampoline and two WaveRunners.
Come Together: 60 meters
Price: $65,000,000 Special Features: DJ and videographer on board, ice bath, sauna
Next-to-new yacht Come Together is looking for a new owner after doing charters during the 2023 season.
The Beatles' influence is evident beyond the yacht's name, with guitars dotting the sky lounge and a crewmember who doubles as a DJ. There's also an outdoor cinema and bar for entertainment and an ice bath and sauna for the day after the party. The owner's suite has a private study and lounge, and each guest cabin has its own ensuite.
The sale includes a number of toys, like Jet Skis, kayaks, and Seabobs.

It’s all well and good to say you SHOULD charter a yacht in Florida, but HOW does one do that?
That’s where Sailo comes in.
Sailo is a platform where verified boat owners and representatives can list their boats for rent and charter. So basically, it’s like Airbnb for boats, but with the option to rent a captain too, which is ideal for those who can’t drive a boat. And the good news is, there are a tonne of rentals in the waters of Florida. Click on the website, select your date, browse the available boats and book.
You can also hire a chartered boat from one of the many yacht rental companies that line the coastal towns of Miami, but this will require some searching around to find a reputable company. Sailo has user reviews, so it makes finding a decent boat much easier.
Something to consider – if you rent a boat in Florida and intend on driving the boat yourself, you don’t need a boat license, but if you are born after Jan 1st, 1988 (very specific) you do need a Boating Safety Education Identification Card .
Did we not already convince you when we mentioned the tempting tropical water, sunshine and gorgeous beaches?
There’s no better way to experience Florida than by boat. Let me tell you why…
When you charter a boat, it means that a captain and crew are included in your experience, so you can just sit back and enjoy. While it is more expensive than renting a bareboat charter in Florida where you are responsible for driving and navigation, etc), you do benefit from having an experienced driver. It is a sort of all-inclusive experience that means you can focus on having fun and connecting with your fellow vacationers.
From a boat, you can experience the best of Florida’s subtropical waters. You can enjoy a romantic sunset, snorkel and admire the biodiversity of marine life, or spend a day at a secluded beach, for example.

Does it have a cabin with AC for when you need a moment out of the heat? Tick.

Perhaps a day swimming and snorkelling in the clear waters is calling you. Or maybe docking at a waterfront restaurant is more up your alley.
You can do it all, too! It’s your day, you choose what goes. There are plenty of options for how you spend your day on this huge Florida yacht charter.
- Watch the sunset. No matter where you are in Florida, there’s something extra special about watching the sunset from your own private yacht. Whether you enjoy it from Biscayne Bay with a view over the Miami city skyline or from the water by a secluded island, catching a sunset is one of the best things to do in Florida , so don’t miss out on a sunset.
- Celebrity Sightseeing along Millionaires Row . Cruise along the waters of Biscayne Bay with a cocktail in one hand and a pair of binoculars in the other as you sail past the equisite mansions of Millionaire’s Row, where you may just spot a celebrity outside on their lawns. Whether you see a celeb or not, you can still marvel at the stunning architecture of those richest Floridian residents. Good times guarenteed, celebrities not guaranteed.
- Go snorkelling. The tropical waters of Florida are known for an abundance of tropical fish, interesting sea life and colourful coral. Make the most of the biodiversity and explore below the surface with a snorkel.
- Drinks on deck. We are in Florida, it’s not the time to skip the party. The drinks are cold and the weather is hot. Pour yourself a drink and sit back and relax on the deck of your yacht charter. I can almost guarantee you’ve never looked this good before. If you feel like getting a little more rowdy, a booze cruise is certainly not out of the question in Florida. Enjoy yourself, responsibly of course.
- Jetski. Imagine zooming around the bay on a jetski with a tropical breeze on your face. Jetskis are damn fun, and Florida is an awesome place to try them out. Many of the more luxurious yacht charters in Florida include a jetski as a part of the package to sweeten the deal that little bit more. If not, chat with your captain, they might be able to arrange one for you!
- Dolphin watching. Atlantic bottlenose dolphins can be found frolicking about in the waters of Florida. Be sure to watch out for them while you cruise around the water!
- Get some sun. What better place to catch some rays than under the hot Floridian sun? Make sure you remember your hat and reef-safe sunscreen. You can protect your skin and get some vitamin D at the same time.
- Watersports. One of the best ways to enjoy a day on the water is to get into some watersports. Florida is a great spot to try out water skiing, wakeboarding and a wet ‘n’ wild tube ride.
- Floating mat and water inflatables. Drifting on the water under the sun or splashing and playing around with your mates on water inflatables is bound to be an epic time. Many yacht charters in Florida include water equipment like floating mats and water inflatables.
- Enjoy a secluded beach. Maybe you want to enjoy a naturist spot and get your gear off or escape the hustle and bustle of busy places. There are plenty of stunning and secluded beaches and islands around Florida just waiting to be explored.
If we haven’t convinced you to charter a yacht in Florida by now, I don’t know what will.
Whether you’re planning a day on the water to celebrate something special, spend quality time with family or friends, or just keen for a unique day on your travels, chartering a yacht is an easy way to have some fun.
We do think the best way to experience the best of Florida’s tropical waters is by yacht charter. Those bottlenose dolphins won’t admire themselves!
Our top recommendation would be to check out renting a bareboat in Florida, even just for a day. This could be your chance to tick a DIY sailing trip off your bucket list!
But for now, we will leave you here dreaming of a day on a luxury yacht under the Floridian sun. And if you need more inspiration, check out our guides to the best boat rentals in Tampa , and best boat rentals in Fort Lauderdale , too!

Whether you're the son of a son of a sailor or even just love that song and want to know more, the granddaddy of all boating events is happening this weekend along the West Palm Beach waterfront.
That's right, the Palm Beach International Boat Show is back for four glorious days along Flagler Drive.
This will be the 42nd annual event, and organizers promise it will be bigger and better than ever.
There will be $1.2 billion worth of Bond-worthy super yachts, cruisers, sportfishing boats, center consoles and even inflatables to see and tour, along with attractions and activities highlighting the latest in boat engines, motors and accessories. There will also be the latest fishing gear and even fishing seminars.
Yes, it's a big event, but don't be intimidated. In fact, here are seven fun facts about the show:
How many boats can the Palm Beach boat show boast?
There will be more than 800 boats on display along the floating docks in the Intracoastal Waterway.
What is the biggest boat at the Palm Beach International Boat Show?
With a length of 236 feet (and 38 feet wide), Casino Royale takes the title for largest boat this year. This gorgeous yacht, designed for her exterior lines by Francesco Paszkowski with interior by Paszkowski’s interior lead designer Margherita Casprini, is also one of the most technically advanced yachts in her category. Casino Royale is powered by twin Caterpillar 3516B main engines and has an impressive top speed of 17.5 knots. You can put your checkbooks away for this one, however, as she is only on display and not for sale.
