Discover the best yacht clubs in the world
Published 15 November 2023
Renowned for their historic sailing traditions, stunning locations and exclusive membership, the most prestigious yacht clubs in the world offer a unique social hub for like-minded yachting enthusiasts to enjoy. As social venues go, the worlds these clubs inhabit have the upper hand, particularly during some of their regattas. Burgess takes a look behind the scenes at some of the best yacht clubs in the world.
What is a yacht club: history.
Founded in 1720, the Royal Cork Yacht Club was a forerunner and became the first formally established yacht club in the world. Before this time, yachts were typically owned by royalty, but as non-royals began to purchase or build their own yachts to sail and race, clubs began to form to aid in the organisation of such races and regattas.
Then, and now, few institutions compete with the exclusivity and prestige of a yacht club. Whether founded by a prince, boasting a rich history and tradition, or as a recent addition to the most highly ranked yacht clubs in the world, being an esteemed member of any of these yacht clubs is the pinnacle of yachting for many. The majority of the clubhouses are located in iconic seaside settings (or in major cities, as is the case for the New York Yacht Club) and have world-class amenities. Upholding sailing traditions to this day, every yacht club will organise regattas and racing, and a few have also become training centres for young sailors.
Members can also benefit from club facilities which can include anything from grand and stately rooms for entertaining and socialising in, to swimming pools, concierge services, high-end restaurants, and, most importantly, a yachting community to socialise and network with. With all this typically comes a high joining and membership fee and a rigorous application process, including recommendations and meticulous screening, meaning that the resulting membership pool are a close-knit community of generally like-minded people.
What to wear to a yacht club?
Remaining traditional, most yacht clubs have specific guidelines for dress code inside their clubs. Depending on the time of day or event, the dress code for men is usually collared shirts or polos rather than t-shirts, with trousers rather than shorts and closed-toe shoes. Ties are not usually required for lunch, and, given the locations of most of the clubs, light colours and light fabrics are also advisable.
For ladies, tops should not be strappy or too casual, while skirts or dresses should be a suitable length. Trousers for ladies are also acceptable at most clubs, while footwear of any style, other than trainers or flip flops, are allowed. Hats of any sort are usually also forbidden inside.
The best yacht clubs in the world
There are thousands of yacht clubs in the world but only a handful are considered to be elite . Whether famed for their historic sailing traditions, their sumptuous settings or their excellent facilities, one thing all of our selected yacht clubs have in common is their exclusive and respected membership.
The Royal Yacht Squadron
Not quite the world’s oldest club, but one of the most famous of the historic ones, the Royal Yacht Squadron (RYS) was established in 1815. Originally set up as a local club by 42 original members with an interest in yachting, its royal association began just two years after its founding when the Prince Regent, later King George IV, became a member. Later on, when he acceded to become King, it was then renamed the Royal Yacht Squadron and its clubhouse is Cowes Castle on the Isle of Wight, UK.
The club has always attracted famous and illustrious members. As well as George IV, Nelson’s Captain at Trafalgar Admiral Sir Thomas Hardy was a founder member, and later the explorer Robert Falcon Scott (Scott of the Antarctic). These famous members and royal associations secured its reputation as one of the most influential yachting establishments. It was RYS’s commodore who originally challenged the New York Yacht Club and their racing yacht America to a round-the-island race in 1851 – a contest now known as the America’s Cup (see NYYC below). The RYS also initiated the regatta racing rule which mandates racing yachts to give way to the vessel on the starboard tack (a rule which must have saved countless accidents since its inception).
Today the club hosts several regattas, the most famous of which is Cowes Week. There are just over 500 members of the Royal Yacht Squadron, 75 of whom are Naval members and 60 of whom are Honorary members. Only British yacht club members are permitted to fly the White Ensign on their yachts – a unique privilege for Squadron members only those dates back to 1829 when it was gifted to them by King William, who was himself a member. Membership to the club is by recommendation from existing members and subject to a secret ballot.
New York Yacht Club
The New York Yacht Club (NYYC) was established in 1844 by John Cox Stevens. He was the owner of the schooner America, with which he triumphed against a fleet of British yachts in 1851 in what became the prequel to the America’s Cup race named after his vessel. Between 1857 and 1983 the NYYC then successfully defended the cup a further 25 times, before eventually losing it to the Royal Perth Yacht Club’s yacht AUSTRALIA II. This was and still is the longest winning streak (in terms of years) in any sport.
From transatlantic victories to its famous ‘cruises’, the club has been a founder of many of yachting’s great firsts. Since losing the cup to Australia in 1983, the club has welcomed younger sailors to its two clubhouses: one in a stunning Beaux-Arts building in Manhattan and the other in a grander waterfront location in Newport, Rhode Island. The former is a jacket and tie establishment, and the latter provides members with access to the ideal sailing conditions promised by the deep waters around Rhode Island. Today, the club’s burgee, which only club members are permitted to fly, is recognised the yachting world over.
Yacht Club de Monaco
Founded in 1953 by Prince Rainier III of Monaco, the Yacht Club de Monaco is a relatively new entrant to the scene which nevertheless holds a unique position in international yachting. Created from the old Société des Regates, its aim was to promote yachting within the Principality, and judging by the number of yachts which populate Monaco’s Port Hercule it has certainly succeeded. The Club is twinned with several clubs, including two of the world’s leading yacht clubs – the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda and the Real Club Nautico de Barcelona. Members are therefore able to participate in sporting activities held between clubs and access each other’s clubhouse and facilities.
The Yacht Club de Monaco’s major focus is racing, but the social scene is not far behind. This is a club with such an exclusive members’ list that although it is the place to be seen, the members remain discreet. His Royal Highness, Prince Sovereign Albert II, has been Club President since 1984 and is also responsible for the clubhouse that opened in 2014.
Located at the heart of the Principality overlooking Port Hercules, the futuristic-styled Norman Foster designed building resembles a yacht with a series of deck-like terraces, all offering spectacular views over the Mediterranean. A fantastic venue for socialising and entertaining with all manner of events for the yachting community, including exclusive parties and events throughout the Monaco Yacht Show , the clubhouse is also home to the 1909 Restaurant, the Sunrise Restaurant, the Aquarama Riva Bar, Observatory Deck, and the Ballroom. Members also have access to a large outdoor swimming pool and lounge deck area.
Membership is extremely limited and prospective candidates are rigorously vetted. Applications must be supported by two existing members and if successful, they are welcomed with a party and dinner in their honour. Given its exclusive nature, a formal dress code for day and evening wear is mandatory for all.
Yacht Club Costa Smeralda
Founded in 1967 by HH the Aga Khan, the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda (YCCS) is one of the leading yacht clubs in the Mediterranean. Amongst the world’s most eminent yachting destinations, Sardinia’s Porto Cervo and the surrounding waters are the club’s main draw. This coastline provides ideal conditions for sailing and as a result the club hosts some of the world’s most prestigious regattas, including the Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup, the Rolex Swan Cup, and the Giorgio Armani Superyacht Regatta.
Aside from its impressive racing calendar, the YCCS has become one of the most luxurious locations for superyachts throughout the summer season. With an impressive social scene, the clubhouse literally buzzes with high-profile members stepping ashore from their yachts to enjoy its many amenities. The clubhouse itself also offers a panoramic pool terrace, al fresco dining, a wellness centre and spa, and a member’s lounge and bar, while also located within walking distance is the Pevero Golf Club and Cala Granu Beach.
Membership is strict, with a new member having to be proposed by two current members. A Club Uniform is available for YCCS members and must be worn if participating in certain events when members are officially representing the Club. Evening attire also requires the typical clubhouse attire, with long trousers and a shirt (no t-shirts) and closed shoes for men, while ladies must wear a suitable length skirt or trousers. Along with the Yacht Club de Monaco, the YCCS is twinned with the prestigious New York Yacht Club and the Royal Yacht Squadron.
St Francis Yacht Club
The St Francis Yacht Club (StFYC) is one of the world’s most prestigious sailing clubs. It is also one of the oldest American yacht clubs, having been founded in 1927 when a few members from the San Francisco Yacht Club decided to move their clubhouse from Sausalito to Belvedere.
Today, the Mediterranean Revival-style clubhouse affords dazzling views over the San Francisco Bay, the Golden Gate Bridge, and the infamous Alcatraz. More importantly, it provides access to some of the most spectacular sailing waters in the world, with berthing on the shores of San Francisco Bay and access to the private Tinsley Island in the Sacramento Delta.
St Francis Yacht Club members enjoy a busy schedule of racing events, including the Rolex Big Boat Series. The Club also hosts a series of social events within its clubhouse dining and multiple event spaces. The dress code for social engagements is formal, with clubhouse attire post 6pm requiring jackets for men and the equivalent evening dress for ladies. Membership to the club is by invitation only, with nominations sponsored by between one and three existing members based on the level of membership required.
Dubai Marina Yacht Club
It may not hold the historic prestige of the other yacht clubs featured here, but what the Dubai Marina Yacht Club lacks in history it certainly makes up for in facilities and luxury. Located in the heart of New Dubai, the Club is one of the largest yacht clubs in the world, encompassing five marinas located along the Persian Gulf coastline. Enveloped by soaring skyscrapers on either side, the Club House Marina lies at the heart of the Dubai Marina Yacht Club, while the West Bay Marina is perfectly located for ease of access to the sea.
East Marina and the Marina Promenade offer an array of restaurants and shopping arcades, and the Marina Mall is the entertainment and retail hub. Member lounges are spread across the facility, including the Aquara Lounge and the Yots Sports lounge. Amenities across all marinas include several member lounges and a 24/7 concierge service. Being a Dubai Marina Yacht Club member allows for berthing perks, a 24/7 concierge service, access to water taxis, pools, and gyms, and invites to yachting events dedicated to showcasing the region’s geography and culture.
Grand Bahama Yacht Club
With its easily navigated deep-water marina on the island of Grand Bahama, the Grand Bahama Yacht Club in Freeport is one of the most prominent marinas in the Caribbean. Welcoming large yachts to its convenient location just to the north of The Bahamas archipelago, the Club is a designated Bahamas Port of Entry and often the first port-of-call in The Bahamas for yachts coming from Florida.
Membership of the Grand Bahama Yacht Club includes access to the turn-of-the-century modern clubhouse with its European architecture and lush tropical landscaping. It also has an Olympic-sized swimming pool, and 24/7 security.
Cruising Yacht Club of Australia
Founded in 1944, The Cruising Yacht Club of Australia (CYCA) has become Australia’s most prestigious yacht club. Host to the famous Rolex Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race, the club has world-class facilities for both the sailing elite and its members, who also enjoy access to the club’s comprehensive sailing programme.
Nestled along the Rushcutters Bay foreshore, the modern clubhouse enjoys stunning harbour views, a large 213-berth marina, function rooms, and other clubhouse amenities including a bar and lounge. Membership to the CYCA is on a referral basis.
Barbados Yacht Club
The Barbados Yacht Club is located on Carlisle Bay and as such it provides access to stunning beaches and ideal sailing conditions that the Caribbean is known for. From the beach bar to tennis to a host of sailing programmes, members benefit from a wide array of both sailing and social activities.
Like many of the other clubs in this list, the Barbados Yacht Club hosts a variety of regattas, including the Mount Gay Rum Barbados Regatta along with recreational activities like tennis and sailing programmes, while the clubhouse also has a restaurant and bar for socialising. Membership to the Barbados Yacht Club is through a monthly ballot and is based on sailing performance.

Best Sailing Destinations In Europe
Last Updated by
Daniel Wade
August 30, 2022
Europe boasts a rich history, beautiful architecture, and some of the most significant landmarks in the world—and so does its vast coastline.
The best sailing destinations in Europe are the coasts and rivers of the United Kingdom, France, Italy, Finland, Germany, Greece, Cyprus, and Portugal. St. Petersburg, Russia, and Amsterdam, Holland, are also great places to explore
In this article, we’ll go over some of the best sailing destinations in Europe and the top attractions they have to offer. We’ll also go over the local sailboat and marina facilities in these locations, along with what to expect when you travel there.
We sourced the information used in this article from European travel guides. We also considered the testimony of sailors who frequently travel around the coastlines and inland waterways of the region.
Table of contents
Sailing in the European Union
Sailing around Europe is a lot easier than sailing around other equally geographically congested parts of the world. This is especially true if you have a European passport. But even if you don’t, there are still benefits.
The primary plus of the EU is that these countries all use the same currency. That means you exchange your money once—and you’re done. Also, it’s easier to travel between them as many of the customs and declaration rules are similar.
Laws tend to follow a typical western standard as well, so you’re not likely to have any ‘oops’ moments with the police if you behave yourself. This is in stark contrast to just a few decades ago, when many of these small republics were part of the Eastern Bloc, and sailing around their waters was out of the question.
Ten Best European Countries to Sail To
There are 27 separate countries in the European Union, and many of them have at least one prominent coastal city or coastline area. Here, we put together the top 10 sailing destinations in Europe, both inside and out of the European Union.
1. The United Kingdom
The UK is one of the most storied and beautiful countries in the world—and it’s also responsible for many of the sailing innovations we take for granted today.
Over its history, the island nation developed advanced shipbuilding techniques and naval tactics and went on to dominate the world by sea for centuries. Today, the nation remains one of the most historic and interesting locations for anyone with a passion for boats.
One of the greatest sailing destinations in the UK is London. This English city is the most populous in the nation and home to some of its most historically significant sites. You can sail right up the Thames river through the heart of the city and dock with a view of the historic cruiser HMS Belfast.
There’s plenty to do in London once you’re off the dock and even more to see throughout the rest of the country. One of the most interesting marine excursions is through England’s many canals, which cut through the countryside that once served as the lifeblood of the nation.
France is another top destination for European sailing, and it also hosts one of the most favored mooring spots in the sailing community. The breathtaking French coastline is just part of the story, as you can spend days or weeks exploring the country’s vast network of channels and rivers.
Paris is, of course, a favorite destination for tourists—maritime or otherwise. But there’s much more to see in the area, and there’s sure to be something for everyone.
A notable example is Omaha Beach, where the Allies began one of the most vicious battles of World War Two. The scars of war remain in the form of massive shell craters and busted-up concrete bunkers, which still dot the landscape as if the battle happened yesterday.
But if war isn’t quite your speed, there’s another French coastal destination that might suit you well. It’s the isle of Corsica, and it’s the gorgeous birthplace of famed French leader Napoleon. The isle sports crystal-clear water, beaches, and ancient architecture.
Who can think of a sailing vacation in Europe and not picture Italy? The country, located on the Mediterranean Sea, is one of the most beautiful sailing destinations in Europe. The food, the music—it’s all there and ready for you to immerse yourself into.
Much of Italy hasn’t changed much in centuries. Of course, that also includes Venice. The waterlogged city of Venice is the most famous canal city in the world, and it has remained largely untouched for years.
And though you can’t technically take your boat through the canals, you can hire a local to row you through for an authentic experience. And if Venice isn’t your speed, try the breathtaking Amalfi coast and its picturesque buildings. Monaco is another beautiful city to visit, and it has plentiful modern marina space.
4. St. Petersburg, Russia
A short trip up the Neva River leads you to Russia’s most ‘European’ city. With architecture and geography more on par with Sweden than Moscow, this city is a gem and a great destination for sailing.
Often considered Russia’s most beautiful city, St. Petersburg survived much of the nation’s turbulent history and retained its stunning Czarist Russian architecture. The river, which has modern marina spaces, is the gateway from the EU to Russia.
St. Petersburg is also a highly affordable place to visit, as prices there are often half of what you’d pay in an EU country. The locals are friendly, and the city is extremely safe, even by Western European standards. Additionally, there are numerous tourist attractions, including the historic Russian cruiser Aurora.
St Petersburg is also a short jump away from Finland by sea, so you can tour countries such as Sweden and Norway on the same trip. Just be sure to follow all the declaration and visa rules, as Russia can be tricky due to the currency and language barriers.
If you’re already in the area (for example, headed down the Neva River from St. Petersburg), it’s a great idea to stop in Finland and see the stunning landscape and architecture. This Northern European country is known for its beautiful riverside architecture—which you can pull your sailboat right up to in many places.
Finland is also one of the few destinations where you can see the Northern Lights without taking your boat through, particularly treacherous waters. That said, the Baltic Sea isn’t known to be particularly friendly during the winter.
Upon arrival in Finland, you’ll be greeted by rows of colorful houses and some of the friendliest people in Europe. During the summer, the days are extremely long, and the sun never sets completely. This is an incredible experience, and you can have it from the deck of your boat in one of Finland’s many coastal hideaways.
Germany is one of Europe’s most interesting countries, and it’s home to world-renowned food, drink, and annual festivals. How cool would it be to throw an Oktoberfest party on your sailboat? Just head up the Rhine river to Duisburg or Frankfurt, and you can.
Germany has beautiful landscapes and historic architecture, along with some of the most advanced shipbuilding in the world. The country also hosts ancient ruins, and who can forget the world-class beer and chocolate?
Germany also has a tumultuous past—the scars of which, such as the Berlin Wall, remain and are a must-see for any history buff. Germany usually isn’t a top destination on sailing vacation lists, but it should be because modern Germany has a whole lot to offer to sailors and plenty of sights to see.
7. The Netherlands
Specifically, we’re referring to Amsterdam. This beautiful city in Holland is the most picturesque and interesting coastal city in Europe. You can access it directly from the water, with no complex rivers to navigate. Additionally, Amsterdam is home to modern marinas and amazing accommodations.
Amsterdam is divided by an intricate series of rivers and canals. It’s a very boat-friendly city, but you can’t bring your full-size cursing sailboat everywhere. Nonetheless, it’s a popular destination for sailors from all over the world.
During the summer, the weather is perfect for exploring the city’s endless streets and historic buildings. After enjoying dutch food, drink, and entertainment, you can walk all the way back to your boat for the night or simply hop on the city’s fantastic public transportation system.
And while you’re in Holland, you can see the world-famous windmills and rolling fields of wildflowers. It truly is one of the most beautiful countries in the world, and also one of the most modern.
Are you looking for southerly warmth and endless history? Greece is the country to see, and there’s no shortage of either in the area. Greece is the cradle of western civilization, and the nation’s stunning ruins and beautiful scenery are unsurpassed anywhere else in the world.
The majority of Greece borders the water, which is great news for sailors. There are dozens of marinas and yacht clubs located around the country, including many ancient cities that are well worth exploring. The islands that surround the country are also the perfect Mediterranean vacation spots—out of the way and teeming with authentic Greek food and culture.
And while you’re in the region, don’t forget to check out the tiny island nation of Cyprus. This storied country is located in the eastern Mediterranean and home to some of the most beautiful sailing in the world.
Upon arrival to Cyprus, you’ll be greeted by ancient ruins of a once heavily defended territory. Beautiful Mediterranean architecture dots the landscape, and some of the most picturesque harbors await you along the way.
While in Cyprus, you can hang out on the yellow sand beaches and enjoy the sun or adventure off into the heart of the nation to view the landscape and historical sites. Cypress is also an ideal winter sailing destination, as the weather remains warm and favorable year-round.
10. Portugal
Welcome to the cork capital of the world and one of the most breathtaking European sailing destinations. Portugal is located on the western border of Spain, and the coast spans most of the country. This southerly paradise is also famous for its warm weather and beautiful coastal docking locations.
The rocky shoreline of Portugal is famous for its unique rock formations and long, sandy beaches. The unique architectural style in the country resembles that of Spain, though it has a Portuguese touch that’s easy to distinguish.
While in Portugal, be sure to check out some of the beautiful coastal sites of Lagos and Praia Dona Ana. You can enjoy the crystal clear waters from your boat or dock to explore the colorful and historic hillside towns.

Cruising northern Europe: The best places to sail to
- Miranda Delmar-Morgan
- October 18, 2021
Miranda Delmar-Morgan recommends a few of her favourite places to sail when cruising northern Europe between Atlantic France and the Kiel Canal

Cruising northern Europe exposes sailors to a whole host of beautiful harbours , ports and anchorages.
We take a look at some favourite cruising areas to inspire you to make some firm plans for the next season.
Cruising northern Europe: Homewaters and Channel coasts
Northern Brittany is full of both charm and challenge for anyone looking to escape the UK south coast for a week or two, says Miranda Delmar-Morgan .
Miranda Delmar Morgan is an author of multiple pilot and reference books and has logged over 100,000 miles. She currently owns a Najad 390
L’Aber Wrac’h is the turning point for arrivals from the south up the Chenal du Four and for turning east.
The Île de Batz is a charming otherworldly place, with an alarming inshore passage littered with hazards but well marked.
East of the attractive Roscoff lies Morlaix with an impressive viaduct 5M up a channel marked with transits.
Any deviation risks immediate grounding in deep soft mud and the outer approaches need care.
Les Sept Îles are a bird reserve with a huge gannetry, and two anchorages on the southern side. Trébeurden is a useful stop but Ploumanac’h is the jewel in the crown with large pink boulders on the Granite Rose coast.
Both Lézardrieux on the Trieux River and Tréguier on the Tréguier River are lovely towns, and the areas around Les Îles de Bréhat and Paimpol are full of interest.

An inward journey up the uncharted Trieux River takes you to the pretty little town of Pontrieux where you lock in and lie on the wall. Tréguier and Lézardrieux are a common departure point for crossing over to the Channel Islands.
The west coast of the Cotentin peninsula, Les Îles Chausey, the area around St Malo as far as Les Îles de Bréhat provide for a circular cruise.

They are challenging waters with big tides. Granville for instance has a 12m rise and fall.
The whole of the Brittany coast is a seafood lovers’ haven with streetside cafés and restaurants crammed with crustaceans, and their crêpes and gallettes are a Breton speciality.
Both St Malo, with its wonderful Grand Aquarium and Mont St Michel not far away, and Granville, with its Christian Dior Museum, are wonderful towns, and of course St Malo has excellent ferry connections with the Channel Islands.
Channel Islands
The Channel Islands provide a cruising ground within themselves.
Alderney (whose residents were evacuated to Weymouth in WW2) has a wild feel with much of the history of the German occupation still in evidence with large forts.
It is lined on both sides with swingeing tides in the Alderney Race and the Swinge.
The Corbett Rock is visible in the Swinge at slack tide before the tide starts running hard to the south and there is an inner passage of relatively calm water usually visible.
However, the Swinge and the Alderney Race are not to be trifled with and first visits should be timed to coincide with neap tides.
Jersey has many beautiful beaches, like Portlet Bay. Credit: Will Bruton
You can anchor at Burhou but not go ashore, as it is a bird reserve. Sailors in Victoria Marina in St Peter Port can step ashore straight into the town, and facilities are excellent.
The waiting pontoons outside are also now shore linked.
Home to Victor Hugo, and duty free shops, it is a popular destination and a useful port for crew changes.
Sark and Little Sark are a delight with moorings off the Guillot passage and several anchorages, Herm has wonderful beaches and Jersey has the Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust (ex-Jersey Zoo).
The islands have a warm maritime climate and an interesting history.
Moving up Channel
From Cherbourg eastwards there are many nice stops.
Nobody should miss St Vaast La Hougue on the Cotentin peninsula, which has the renowned Maison Gosselin delicatessen, and the wonderful Vauban fort on the UNESCO listed Île de Tatihou.
Carentan is approached up a charming canal with pastoral scenes.
The Mulberry Harbour at Arromanches is a fascinating place and in Honfleur you are surrounded by a town which is an artist’s delight.
Fécamp has a good tidal yacht marina
Fécamp is the home of the Benedictine monks and their delicious liqueur. Deauville/Trouville are fashionable holiday resorts.
Boulogne, Dieppe, Calais and Dunkirk all have deep water entrances and old town centres.
In Belgium, Ostend is another favoured stop with fantastic quayside fish stalls, on the way up to Holland.
Zeebrugge gives you access to the magnificent Bruges 6.5M inland and Antwerp has a marina in the middle of a beautiful town.
The Netherlands
The inland waterways of the Netherlands provide a delightful cruising ground with protected waters for novice crew.
Using the Standing Mast routes you can make your way up and down the country and step ashore in the centre of beautiful towns onto elegant streets too numerous to list.
The night convoy through Amsterdam, the Zaanse Shans museum with 18 windmills at Zaandam; the Westfries Museum (celebrating the Golden Age) at Hoorn; Rembrandt’s house in Amsterdam; and the 120m circumference cylindrical painting, the Panorama Mesdag , in the Hague should not be missed.
The canal to Haarlem provides the surreal experience of your cockpit being above the cows grazing beneath you.
The Markermeer and Ijsselmeer are shallow but you eventually get used to sailing in a mere 3m, and the bottom is fairly even.
A passage through Amsterdam by night is unmissable. Credit: Royal Netherlands Navy
Channels and pinch points are very well buoyed.
The Standing Mast booklet has chartlets, and bridge and lock opening times which all run like clockwork.
The huge sea locks are initially daunting but ships and yachts are separated and they are well protected and usually free from swell.

One inland lock can accommodate 40 yachts in one locking. At Dokkum the lock keeper swings a clog on a rod towards you for you to put in the fee as you pass through.
And who can visit Holland without acquiring a piece of Delft pottery?
Heading for the Baltic
If weather is bad outside for passage making to and from the Baltic then progress can be made south-west to north-east via the canals using the Standing Mast routes.
Passage making is slower, but better than being weatherbound in the North Sea ports.
Harlingen provides access to the northern canal to Lauwersoog or Delfzil on the Ems.
This is a slightly shallower canal though the Dutch still take quite deep (1.9-2.0m draught) yachts up it without batting an eyelid.
Droughts can affect the depths and you should enquire before committing.
The waters around Norderney are Riddle of the Sands territory. Credit: Alamy Stock Photo
From Delfzil the brave or curious can take the Memmert passage south of Juist, which featured in Erskine Childers’ Riddle of the Sands , to the German island of Norderney.
The channel may be silting up and the HM at Delfzil may provide up-to-date knowledge.
The Waddenzee is a flat inland sea with an ethereal feel.
The shifting sands demand up-to-date charts and all the Friesian islands are said to be shifting eastwards at a rate of 0.5m-1.0m per year.
The tides run hard in the gats which keeps the islands from merging with each other.
Borkum and Norderney each have their own distinctive identities and are both worth a visit.
Helgoland is an extraordinary place with a large gannetry, and from there, Cuxhaven and the entry to the Elbe give access to the Kiel Canal and the Baltic beyond.
Cruising northern Europe: What you need to know
Le Gouffre du Castel-Meuru, near Tréguier, sits between huge granite rose rocks. Credit: Alamy Stock Photo
Much as with the UK, the weather is dominated by Atlantic weather systems, but a spell of continental high pressure can be glorious.
Prevailing winds from the south-west make heading east along the coast easier than sailing west. June and July are more reliable for summer weather than August.

Summer 2024 luxury yacht charter: Top 5 ...
- Yacht Charter Locations >
European yacht charters are growing in popularity for the more experienced charterer - even when leaving aside the most popular Mediterranean counties. Anyone on a yacht charter holiday in the British Isles or Europe will experience great cultural and scenic variety. There are yacht charter operators in England, Scotland, Ireland, Brittany, Holland, Sweden and Norway, to name a few. There are also yacht charter locations for every level of skill, experience and budget from the shallow east coast of England to the rugged highlands of Scotland and the soaring fjords of Norway. Scotland can sometimes be tranquil and sometimes rugged; Britain can be sometimes busy and sometimes deserted; Brittany can be sometimes sunny and sometimes rainy. No matter what you desire you will no-doubt encounter a concentration of history and culture.
Europe is one of the world's seven continents. Europe stretches from the westernmost peninsula of Eurasia, to the Ural and Caucasus Mountains in the east where is it 'divided' from Asia. Europe is bordered by the Arctic Ocean and other bodies of water to the north, the Atlantic Ocean to the west, the Mediterranean Sea to the south, and the Caspian Sea, Black Sea and connected waterways to the southeast.
‘Europe’ therefore does include countries that borders with the Western Mediterranean Sea such as the popular yacht destinations of Spain, France and Italy, however these well developed yachting destinations found in Southern Europe are discussed in more detail under the Western Mediterranean yacht charter section .
Northern Europe has all the main types of yacht charters available in the United Kingdom (England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales) Scandinavia (Denmark, Norway and Sweden) Germany and Russia, including motor, sailing, skippered, crewed yachts, catamaran, power boat, sailboat, luxury yachts and motor yachts. There are also more and more superyachts that visit the area, available for charter including explorer yachts or expedition yachts. Weather patterns make Northern Europe’s summer charter season shorter than that in the Mediterranean, which is why fewer luxury yachts tend to be permanently based in Northern European waters. Summer, from May to about September, is the main season and the best time to charter a yacht in Europe.
- Scandinavia
Yacht chartering in Scandinavia offers charters the possibility to explore the regions mighty Norwegian fjords, un-crowded serenity and peaceful historic ports. Norway boasts beautiful glaciers, some of which actually tumble down from the mountains to meet the sea. Finland’s famous energetic capital city Helsinki is also on the water and displays an artistically rich artistic cultural center. The magical cruising areas of Sweden reveal a tapestry of glistening lakes neat and vibrant cities, whilst Denmark’s Jutland peninsula is another magical location.Time spent on a luxury yacht charters in Scandinavia are relaxed and slowly paced, as the summer months provide more than 20 hours of sunlight each day so there is simply no reason to rush through the spectacular environment.
The peaceful allure of Scandinavia is a stark contrast to the colourful chaos of Mediterranean life: Snow-capped mountains meet with ancient fjords and waterfalls tumble from streams high above. Holiday makers on a luxury yacht charter will uncover nations in beautiful balance with the present and past, where castle ruins meet with cycle paths and hiking trails that connect into the town centres.
Sunbathing opportunities are easy to come across, and for those groups full of energy that want to spend all day looking around the museums, galleries, churches and castles during opening hours before trying out all the water toys, then the summer months with 20-hour days will fulfil your desires.
United Kingdom
The United Kingdom which includes England, Ireland Scotland and Wales is a famous and ancient yachting location. England, a place of sailing tradition has of the world's most important and longest running sailing regattas including the Fastnet and the Around the Island Races. The America’s Cup began here, but there are also new sailing races in and around the Solent, such as the 2012 J Class classic sailing events.
An Ireland yacht charter offers numerous marinas, ports and local pubs where you can sample some Guinness share a laugh and hear a song. Admire the Royal Cork Yacht Club, the oldest yacht club in the world, Bantry Bay and Oysterhaven harbor. An area of outstanding natural beauty, Scotland’s west coast embodies intrigue and mystic with mist-shrouded lochs as well as atmospheric port towns. While a yacht charter up the North Wales coastline provides dramatic scenery, wildlife and hidden coves. Anglesey and the North Wales coast is becoming an increasingly popular location for yachting and chartering and offers a variety of unspoiled beaches, sheltered anchorages and marinas within comfortable cruising distance.
Most tourists know of London and Shakespeare's birthplace, Stratford-Upon-Avon, but few have cruised along the winding coastline to witness the patchwork hills of East Anglia, or the rugged, rocky shores of Scotland that are home to puffins, seals and whales. Charming villages, grandiose castles and impressive country homes are all within easy reach of the beaches and coves, which are excellent in themselves for water sports and Scuba diving on an adventure holiday.
A luxury yacht charter is one of the best ways to explore this island nation, as a journey inland can easily be achieved in a couple of hours.
Visit the atmospheric old harbours and Victorian piers, hike along trails through National Parks and discover the different accents and cultures of each region. Devon and Cornwall are a favourite scenic trip for dramatic coastlines containing fossil-lined cliffs and picturesque lighthouses, while the stone circles of Wales have always attracted the inquisitive.
The coastal towns of the south have plenty of shopping opportunities, from high end luxury goods to factory outlet bargains. There is also plenty of opportunity to join a concert, go to the theatre or join in with a local festival.
Germany & Russia
Germany and the Baltic Sea has a yachting history dating back to ancient seafarers. This is contrasted with an area which now, in modern times, is the birth place of some of the world’s most important superyachts by shipyards like Lurssen, Abeking & Rasmussen and Blohm & Voss. Island groups in the Baltic Sea provide a variety of seaside towns and villages to visit, as well as picturesque landscapes far off the beaten track. Russia has also seen some yacht charters over the last few years. St. Petersburg is the cultural capital of Russia and few cities showcase as many art galleries, concert halls, museums and theaters that can compare.
Head off the beaten track and discover some of Germany's hidden gems along the north coast in the Baltic Sea. National parks are nestled between scenic villages, where modern buildings blend with centuries of history to create a tranquil setting for guests to take in at their leisure.
The Baltic Sea is home to some of the most prestigious superyacht shipyards in the world and as you cruise through you might be one of the first to see a brand new luxury yacht undergoing sea trials in preparation for delivery to their new owner.
To the east, St Petersburg is one of Russia's most iconic locations and as a culture capital, charter groups have plenty of indoor and outdoor exhibitions to discover to the backdrop of broad canals and brightly coloured spires. This world-class destination offers the awe-inspiring Museum Complex St. Isaac's Cathedral, the Peterhof Grand Palace and the State Hermitage Museum and Winter Palace, which is filled with the works from the Masters.

EUROPE Yacht Charter Enquiry
Hi Amanda, The boat was great. The staff were too. Marin in particular. He was super knowledgeable and we felt in good hands. I'd say that maybe a very slight comment is that a Croatian crew and cooking etc is always going to be a little more "Eastern European" than, say an Italian crew. This is not to say it was lacking, just a little different and perhaps requires a little more communication. Thanks for everything. Was really a wonderful holiday I'd love to do a boat trip again. The best yacht clubs in the world

Reranking the MVP for the top Premier League clubs
Last October , we attempted to tackle a mighty question: Which players at the Premier League's top clubs are the most important?
We used a simple combination of ability and tactical importance to assess how crucial they were to their teams and ranked the top 15 accordingly. Naturally, the best, most consistent and most present players filtered toward the top, while also allowing room for the most tactically crucial individuals to receive credit too.
Six months on, we've revisited the subject, intrigued to see how things have changed. Football teams have to weather plenty of storms over the course of half a year, often changing, tweaking and recalibrating around injuries, absences and fluctuations in form. So we've gone and reranked the players at England's traditional Big Six clubs, checking in on how things have transpired since October, who has risen to the fore and increased their stock, and who, conversely, has dropped off.
To begin, here are a few notes about the methodology.
Why 15? Well, with 11 first-team players starting any given match, this should allow for those squad positions that aren't 100% cemented. Any long-term injury absences will be noted separately and not considered for the ranking.
Who is eligible? To be eligible for this ranking, a player must have played 400 Premier League minutes or more for their club. That's not a particularly high bar -- it's just over 15% of the campaign -- and the vast majority of important players clear that threshold with ease. We want to ensure the rankings feel truly up to date on who is important to their teams.
How can you rate the players? WhoScored has an algorithm that gives an overall number out of 10, but it lends itself more to on-ball actions, while this will be more subjective. "Minutes played" is obviously a key component of how important a player is to their manager, but slight injury issues can complicate that: We will use it only as a guide.
Are stats involved? Certainly. We'll look within the context of their position and, for example, will make a case for why a striker (goals, assists, key passes, etc.) will rank higher than a teammate.
How hard is it? Some of the decisions to be made are glaringly obvious, but others not so much. Comparing players across different position groups is a difficult task. Within the context of a squad, though, it's possible to get a feel for who is the most integral in order to form the ranking.
I disagree wholeheartedly with your decision to put X below Y. Will you change it? Of course people will disagree and a lot of this is subjective, but it's only a bit of fun.
Enough of that. On with the rankings.
