The plan worked well as the luxury hotels have become the go-to spot for discerning travelers, socialites, and movie stars coming to Deauville for the film and music festivals.

While visiting, you can take a sightseeing stroll around the properties to marvel at the hotels’ massive entrance halls, high ceilings, and delightful parlors and lounges where you can stop to enjoy a delicious afternoon cocktail.

Deauville polo and horse racing

Deauville is horse central – horse racing in the region dates back as far as 1863 when horses and riders raced on the beach. In 1864, the famous Deauville La Touques Racecourse was built and opened to the public and it has since become a famous tourist spot. Here, you can enjoy roughly 40 regular annual races that attract many international trainers, jockeys, and horses. You can even place a bet here if you’re feeling lucky.

Villa Strassburger

See the villa originally built for baron henri de rothschild.

Architect Georges Pichereau built the Villa Strassburger in 1907 for Baron Henri de Rothschild. As he was a fan of the horse races, the Baron wanted a site closer to the racecourse than the sea. The villa overlooks the racetracks and has beautiful interiors and flower gardens.

In 1924, American billionaire Ralph Beaver Strassburger bought the villa. It was subsequently donated to the town of Deauville through his son in 1980. Villa Strassburger has since been listed as a historical French monument. A living museum of the past century, the villa can be rented out for seminars, cocktail parties and wedding receptions.

Golfing in Deauville

Get a hole-in-one at one of the city’s famous greens.

Normandy is well known as a destination for golfers, and Deauville serves as a popular getaway for players who want to get in some games during their holidays and mini-breaks.

There are several golf courses within easy reach of the town, but if you want to stay close then opt for the Amirauté golf course . This 27-hole course near Deauville is just 5 minutes away from the Amirauté Hotel. Architect Bill Baker designed the championship course, which boasts 3 different courses, 2 putting greens, a driving range, shop, sauna, and restaurant. What’s more, you can also enjoy the various artistic sculptures found throughout the club while here.

Eglise Saint Augustin

Eglise Saint Augustin is a lovely church located right in the center of Deauville. It’s open daily with signs posted whenever there’s a service being held. The church, with its fusion of neo-Gothic and Roman architecture, looks imposing yet reverent. Inside the church, you can enjoy detailed paintings and a large stained glass window that serves as a memorial to World War II.

You can visit the Eglise Saint Augustin to marvel at the architecture, to take a quick breather, or to light a candle and pause for reflection inside the main chapel.

Linkers Open International in Deauville…..

Linkers again sponsored the Open International Dragon Regatta.

This popular regatta hosted by Deauville Yacht Club attracted 16 boats from 29th June to 2nd July and 9 races were completed over the 4 days.  Current French National Champion Jean Breger FRA 391 opened the regatta with a 3rd & 1st to take a one point lead from Gerry Laamens helming NED 318 who also had a very good first day 1st & 4.

On day 2 three races were completed in excellent sailing conditions, Ron James GBR 633 won race 3, Jean Breger FRA 391 won race 4 and Robert Lehmann FRA 431 took race 5.  So after 5 races sailed Jean Breger , crewed by Christian Gout & Jean-Paul Roux held a comfortable overall lead.

Day 3 belonged to GBR 633 Ron James, crewed by Nigel Young and Joanna Richardson as they won both race 6 & 7 in style to completely open up the championship going into the final day.

Ron James was the toast of Deauville, celebrating on Champagne after winning Race 6 & Race 7 !

After racing on Friday the DYC held the Crew Dinner at their stunning new clubhouse which was well attended. President Eric Lebon gave an inspiring speech thanking Linkers Chairman Philippe Delecourt for their continued support. Philippe also promised to keep the sponsorship going and looked forward to the 10th anniversary of “ Linkers”  involvement with DYC in 2024.

On the final day President du Comite’ de Course  Patrick Villette  managed to complete 2 more races in a building breeze to the delight of the competitors. The first race of the day (race 8) was won by BEL 82 helmed by Xavier Vanneste, who will soon be welcoming sailors to the prestigious Gold Cup in Ostend. The final race of the championship was won by NED 442 Andre Dupon who was sailing his brand new Petticrows, the 4th boat built at the new factory in Portugal. Andre and his team of Siebe De Boo & Huib Bannier rounded of an excellent series to finish 3rd overall.

In 2nd place overall was GBR 633 Ron James crewed by Nigel Young & Joanna Richardson. Ron and his team could not repeat their amazing two bullets on the previous day, but did enough to secure the runners up spot.

The Winners of the Championship was FRA 391  Ulysse  helmed by Jean Breger, with Christian Gout & Jean Paul Roux. This very successful French team fully deserved to add yet another trophy to their cabinet and there were smiles all round at prize giving.

In closing l would like to thank all of the Race Committee, the DYC helpers and volunteers, sponsors Linkers and President Eric Lebon for another fantastic regatta. Deauville is an amazing place to visit with a quality shopping centre, beautiful beaches, wonderful accommodation and one of the best Yacht Club’s l have ever had the pleasure to enjoy.

I encourage more Dragon Sailors to join the fun in 2023, you will not be disappointed 🙂
