150923. Rocinante Superyacht. Greg Martin.

An £80million superyacht, owned by an American billionaire, has moored up in Cornwall .

Rocinante, which is 258ft long, arrived in Falmouth Harbour on Thursday 14 September, making everybody else's boats look small in comparison.

Built in 2008 by the Lurssen shipyard in Germany, it was formerly known as TV and Madsummer, before being bought by games developer Gabe Newell.

The billionaire, who is president of the gaming company Valve, was reported to have a net-worth of $4.3billion in 2023.

The luxury vessel costs between £4million and £8million to run, but was renamed by the tech mogul after a less expensive mode of transport — Don Quixote's horse.

Rocinante was in good company this week, with another billionaire's £40million superyacht not far away.

Game Changer is owned by Hong Kong based billionaire heiress Karen Lo.

She was spotted conducting sea trials in Falmouth on 15 September as part of work at Pendennis Shipyard.

Game Changer was initially designed to be a support vessel to allow owners of superyachts to carry more equipment.

But she was later adapted and upgraded to become a superyacht in her own right.

The 230ft Dutch-built vessel not only has a helicopter landing pad, but also a submarine and custom dive centre.

American billionaire's superyachts due in Falmouth today

Two super yachts owned by American billionaire Gabe Newell are expected in the port today (Wednesday).

First to arrive in the morning will be the super yacht tender Dapple going into the Pendennis wet-dock complex followed in the evening by the £80m Rocinante berthing at the Port Pendennis marina.

Dapple is a super yacht tender equipped with a state of the art decompression chamber, dive chamber and a Triton 330 submersible. Aft she has a large helideck that can handle the most extensive commercial helicopters.

Rocinante from the Lurssen stable of super yacht builders is a 78.8 metre long vessel built in 2008.

Newell, who is well known in the world of video game development is worth an estimated £3.2 billion.

He started his career with Microsoft where he helped create the Microsoft operating system.

Apparently he is an active philanthropist supporting the Seattle Children’s Hospital and other causes.

The ports of Fowey, Dartmouth and the Isles of Scilly all sit within easy cruising distance via some of the most pristine sailing waters in the UK framed by rugged coastline.

The region is unmissable for those wanting to experience the natural beauty and picturesque seaside towns of the UK.

Movement Reporting

Vessel movement reporting details are laid out in Admiralty List of Radio Signals, Volume 6.

All large vessel movements in excess of 20m LOA should be reported to ‘Falmouth Pilot Radio’ on VHF ch 09 with at least 15 minutes notice prior to the movement commencing.

This is vital to ensure that movement information can be recorded and promulgated for Port Safety.

Large yachts are expected to comply with all relevant reporting requirements.

We always recommend appointing a local agent to handle pre arrival and immigration formalities.

New vintage yacht regatta sets sail from Falmouth

Thursday, June 8th, 2023

Written by: Marine Industry News

Richard Mille Cup

Some of the world’s most beautiful classic superyachts are gathering in Falmouth Harbour this weekend for the first Richard Mille Cup, which features three days of fierce competition hosted by the Royal Cornwall Yacht Club.

The inaugural Richard Mille Cup, which runs from 10-13 June 2023, will take spectators back to the classic yacht races of the late 1800s — with phase one seeing Falmouth’s Harbour and Bay dominated by towering wooden masts and billowing sails on twelve authentic wooden vessels – some of which are well over a century old.

Falmouth Harbour will showcase the first events of the two-week competition featuring historical yachts from Great Britain and France. It will begin in Falmouth and finish in Le Havre, with three days hard-fought coastal racing in each of Falmouth and Cowes, and passage races to Dartmouth and Le Havre.

Richard Mille Cup

“Classic yachts bear a living, breathing testimony to the highest values of workmanship, heritage and tradition passed on to us through centuries,” says a Richard Mille spokesperson in a statement. “By creating this challenge, we aim to set sail through history and to bring this high-end craft very much back to life.”

Some of the yachts, including the 65m three master Adix and the 42m twin masted schooner Mariette have been restored or refitted on many occasions over the years by Falmouth’s own superyacht specialists Pendennis Shipyard – in between their voyaging and competing across the world.

The Richard Mille Cup will pit these classic vessels against each other in both inshore and offshore competition with more than 200 sailors expected to participate in the racing.

Richard Mille Cup

The Royal Cornwall Yacht Club has been a feature of Falmouth’s harbour since 1871 and as a vibrant club today hosts many national and international events.

“We are extremely proud to have been selected as the initial venue for this special and innovative event in the yachting calendar,” says RCYC Commodore Sarah Hancock. “It should prove a major spectacle and attraction for Falmouth, with over 200 participants arriving in port and be a very rare opportunity to see such stunning yachts competing seriously against each other.”

Boats will be racing from Falmouth on the 11, 12 and 13 June, starting each day at 10.30am with a start line approximately 800 metres off Pendennis Point — giving tremendous views to spectators from Pendennis, Rosemullion and St Anthony Heads.

Depending on weather and wind, the vessels will race across Falmouth Bay to a turning mark off the Manacles, then sail up channel towards Fowey and turn again to Falmouth with the finishing line off the Falmouth beaches or Pendennis Point, should conditions allow, at approximately 3.00pm.

Spectator boats are welcome but will be required to keep a wide berth of the racing fleet at all times, especially ahead of the start where the huge vessels will be manoeuvring and requiring substantial sea room.

Richard Mille

While in Falmouth Harbour, the boats will be berthed at Pendennis Marina and the larger vessels moored near Caldy and Frigate buoys. On Wednesday 14 June, the Richard Mille fleet will race from Falmouth to Dartmouth.

Dr William Collier, who has restored multiple historic yachts back to vintage racing condition, is working with the watchmaker and the hosting yacht clubs on this new event. “The Richard Mille Cup strives to recapture the spirit of the pre-war British racing circuit,” he says. “We see these yachts as important cultural artefacts.”

The Richard Mille contenders are invited owners and charterers of yachts built before 1939 or faithful replicas of such yachts, with twelve vessels competing in the Schooner and Cutter categories. The event includes racing and social events organised by the Royal Cornwall and the Royal Dart Yachts Clubs and the Royal Yacht Squadron, before the final race of the Société des Régates du Havre.

Richard Mille Cup

The three-foot-high Richard Mille trophy has been designed by Garrard, jewellers to the British Royal Family for the last 300 years and designers of the America’s Cup trophy 170 years ago.

The cup takes place shortly before the 2023 edition of UK sailing regatta Falmouth Classics (16 and 17 June), with boats arriving into port on 15 June. Earlier this year, the event announced that it would  welcome steam-powered boats for the first time .

Walmart heiress's luxury superyacht sails into Falmouth

It's said to have its own aquarium on board

  • by Olivier Vergnault
  • 13:37, 10 Jun 2023

A luxurious superyacht owned by one of the richest women in the world has been spotted in Cornwall. Kaos, the 55th largest yacht in the world, was seen moored off Falmouth after being in London towards the end of last month.

Owned by Walmart empire heiress Nancy Walton Laurie, it is said to be worth more than £240 million and was built by in 2017 by Oceanco, the same company which made Jeff Bezos's £400m superyacht.

As reported by CornwallLive 's sister site MyLondon , before travelling down to Cornwall, the 110-metres long superyacht travelled from Miami in Florida to the River Thames where it docked at Butler’s Wharf. At the time of its launch in 2017, Kaos, which weighs 4,523 tonnes, was the largest yacht ever built in the Netherlands.

It has 16 cabins, with room for 45 crew members and 31 guests. According to YachtBible , it can travel at a speed of 19 knots and has an enviably lavish interior.

There are four VIP suites, and ten standard suites with ensuites. Kaos boasts a steam room, full gym, indoor beach club, and a glass elevator between floors. On top of that, there is a cinema, a sauna and a spa.

Across four decks, there are a variety of amenities, including a swimming pool, aquarium and a helipad. Below deck, staff also have gym facilities and there is a hospital in case of emergency.

Boat International reported that Kaos's original interiors are by Sam Sorgiovanni and are said to boast more marble and stone than any other vessel, with inspiration drawn from Casablanca's melting pot of European and Arabic culture. Crystal Caviar insets, custom silk carpets, Iranian white onyx, Golden Spider stone were all key components of the yacht's styling.

It is fitted with a full swimming pool as well as another 8.5-metre pool on the aft deck alongside a 14-seater dining table and a main saloon spanning 135 square metres. The lounge area has gold ceilings, with dark wood features and marble bathrooms.

Kaos is fitted with its own helipad while in terms of entertainment, it has a 12-seat cinema, spa facilities and there is also a full aquarium.

Mrs Laurie is the youngest daughter of Bud Walton, whose brother Sam began what would become the world's largest retail store. Its founder and his wife Helen Walton had four children - Rob, John, Jim, and Alice. John passed away in 2005 in a plane crash but the three surviving siblings have been consistently listed in the top 20 of the Forbes 400 list since 2001.

The first-ever Walmart store opened in July 1962 in Arkansas, and the heirs own around 50 per cent of the stock collectively.

A look at the most expensive superyachts at the Palm Beach yacht show and their insane features, from basketball courts on deck to ice baths and saunas

  • The Palm Beach International Boat Show kicks off later this week.
  • Eight megayachts are expected to be on display for would-be buyers and charter customers.
  • These are the show's biggest yachts — and how many millions of dollars they are going for.

Insider Today

The Palm Beach International Boat Show — the yacht world's flashiest event stateside — is returning this year with over 800 boats for both deep-pocketed potential owners and window shoppers to peruse.

While it's impossible to know what exactly will be on display until the show begins on Thursday, it's expected that eight megayachts — generally defined as ships over 60 meters long — will be docked at the show and at nearby marinas like the Rybovich Marina in the ritzy Florida town.

Some of these are for sale at eye-popping prices, but others are available to charter in case you fancy living like a billionaire for a week or two this summer (and if you have six figures to spare on a vacation).

These are the eight biggest yachts that will be at the Palm Beach International Boat Show and nearby marinas, in size order.

Nero: 90.1 meters

Price: From $497,000 a week (charter) Standout features: Pizza ovens, beauty salon, massage room, resistance pool

Reportedly owned by Irish billionaire Denis O'Brien, Nero is modeled after J.P. Morgan's 1930s ship , and was built in 2007 and updated in 2021.

She now boasts a gym on her sundeck with multiple cardio machines and a beauty salon, and has an on-board beautician for manicure, pedicure, hair, and massage needs. There's also an upgraded movie theater, two new pizza ovens, and both a pool and a jacuzzi.

For those who want to go overboard, she has more than a dozen toys, including a waterslide, Jet Ski, and flyboard.

Victorious: 85 meters

Price: From $876,600 a week in the summer and $950,000 a week in the winter Standout features: Hammam (Turkish bath), wine cellar, wood-burning fireplace, children's playroom

Victorious brings a party vibe to the yacht show. With a beach club on board, a wine cellar, a cigar clubroom , multiple bars, and a lounge with a piano, the vessel is made for entertaining. Plus, there's a playroom and movie theater to entertain the kids.

For tamer charter clients, Victorious has a suite of wellness features such as a gym, massage room, beauty salon and hammam — perhaps a custom request of her owner, Turkish businessman Vural Ak.

She also boasts a treasure trove of water toys, including Jet Skis, jetsurfs, inflatable kayaks, and scuba equipment.

Casino Royale: 72 meters

Price: TBD Special Features: Infinity pool, helipad, private jacuzzi

Purchased and refitted by car dealer magnate John Staluppi last year, Casino Royale is the latest of his James Bond-inspired yachts (he's also owned an Octopussy and a Skyfall, among others).

Casino Royale has a helipad that turns into a dancefloor, an infinity pool, and a wellness center with a gym and sauna. The owner's cabin has its own deck, which features a private bar and jacuzzi.

Related stories

However, the boat's price isn't listed, and while she's not necessarily officially for sale, that might change depending on who's prepared to buy, Mr. Bond.

Talisman C: 70.6 meters

Price: $60 million (or from $567,000 a week to charter) Special features: Massage and beauty room, private library

Likely the largest yacht for sale (not just charter) at the show, the Talisman C is a 2011 six-bedroom boat. The owner's cabin comes with an en suite bathroom, dressing room, private library, and crystal chandeliers.

Amenities include a gym, a beauty room, oversized jacuzzi, and a fully equipped bar. Her crew of 19 includes a trained masseuse, and the toy room comes equipped with a wakeboard, eFoil , and WaveRunners.

Joy: 70 meters

Price: From $650,000 a week Special features: Disco club, basketball court, onboard fitness instructor

Superyacht Joy testifies to the fact that owners want as many on-board experiences as they can get.

There's an expansive suite of fitness features, including a basketball court (don't shoot that hoop too hard!), a personal trainer on staff, boxing equipment, and a handful of machines. For post-workout winddowns, there's a spa with a steam room and onboard masseuse. And for entertainment, there's both an outdoor and indoor cinema, and a disco club.

Triumph: 65.4 meters

Price: From $707,600 a week in the summer and $650,000 a week in the winter Special features: Sauna, helipad, banana boat

This 2021 superyacht is named after Triumph motorcycles — a reported favorite of her rumored owner, British businessman Chris Dawson — and even has one on display as an art piece in the upper deck's lounge. The primary suite is 1,400 square feet and has its own study , and there's a sauna, an indoor-outdoor gym, a helipad, and a massage room spread among her six decks.

She boasts an "armada of water toys," including two kinds of Jet Skis, electric water bikes, and a banana boat.

Seanna: 64.5 meters

Price: $54,000,000 (or from $462,000 a week to charter) Special features: marble foyer, movie room, sundeck pool

The recently refurbished Seanna is available for sale and charter.

Her indoor-outdoor gym is on sea level so that passengers can take a dip after a session with the onboard personal trainer. There's also a sundeck pool, a helipad, a two-room massage facility, and, for the more cerebral guests, a library with an electric fireplace.

There are a number of toys on board, including a popular water trampoline and two WaveRunners.

Come Together: 60 meters

Price: $65,000,000 Special Features: DJ and videographer on board, ice bath, sauna

Next-to-new yacht Come Together is looking for a new owner after doing charters during the 2023 season.

The Beatles' influence is evident beyond the yacht's name, with guitars dotting the sky lounge and a crewmember who doubles as a DJ. There's also an outdoor cinema and bar for entertainment and an ice bath and sauna for the day after the party. The owner's suite has a private study and lounge, and each guest cabin has its own ensuite.

The sale includes a number of toys, like Jet Skis, kayaks, and Seabobs.

Duxbury girls’ hockey completes mission, blanks Falmouth to repeat as Division 2 titlists

Duxbury players (from l-to-r) Madeleine Greenwood, Samantha Norton, Camryn Holloway, and Maeve Murphy celebrate with the Division 2 trophy after defeating Falmouth Sunday at TD Garden.

The opening two minutes of the first two periods played out the same way for Duxbury: Puck drop, early pressure, and a goal right as the clock approached two minutes.

Between junior Maeve Gallagher’s deke and snipe in the first period, and sophomore Lucia Rose’s first varsity goal in the second, the top-seeded Dragons set themselves up for success with their quick starts.

It was more than enough for Duxbury to repeat as the Division 2 girls’ hockey champions with a 4-0 win over No. 2 Falmouth Sunday afternoon at TD Garden.

Gallagher shifted inside from the left wing on the rush — catching the goal-side defender off guard and sending the trailing Falmouth skater to the ice in the process — before roofing her effort 1:52 into play to give the Dragons (24-3-0) the lead.

“We knew if we started flat, it could cost us the whole game,” Gallagher said.

“That was our focus in the locker room — coming out flying and not letting this really talented Falmouth team get up first,” junior Maddie Greenwood added.

At 1:54 of the second, it was Rose’s turn for a quick strike. After her shot from the point sailed into the net, the sophomore turned to the Duxbury bench to let the coaching staff know her prediction came true.

“She mentioned it before the game. She said, ‘Coach, I’m going to get my first goal at the Garden,’ ” coach Dan Najarian said. “She’s played 54 high school hockey games without a goal, and she gets one on the biggest stage.”

Greenwood added to the scoring late in the second with an unassisted effort before Falmouth (23-3-1) received a deluge of power-play time early in the third. Dragons senior goalie Anna McGinty (17 saves) was unfazed — as was junior Megan Carney, who scored the Dragons’ fourth in the closing minutes. The Dragons went 4 for 4 on the penalty kill.

“Honestly, just to get a shutout at the Garden is everything,” McGinty said. “As long as I don’t let in enough goals to let this marvelous team down, I’m chilling.”

Duxbury goaltender Anna McGinty starts the celebration after shutting out Falmouth in the Division 2 state final Sunday at TD Garden.

It’s the Dragons’ sixth win in six state championship games. After four straight titles from 2011-14, including two wins over Falmouth, they repeated again.

“It’s a long road,” Najarian said. “We’ve played now back-to-back seasons as long as you possibly can . . . I think we’ve got a special group in that room, and I think they proved that today.”
