New to charter?

The Advance Provisioning Allowance (APA) is due at the time of the final charter payment. Under MYBA terms, this sum is usually equivalent to 30 per cent of the total charter fee, but may be up to 40 per cent in some cases.

Intended to cover the operating expenses of a charter as explained under Charter Terms, such as fuel, food, drinks, port fees and ad hoc incidentals, the APA will be given to the captain before the start of your charter. The Captain will ensure that the yacht is fully fuelled and provisioned when you step on board. While an up-to-date summary of accounts can be requested at any time during your charter, a full set of accounts will normally be submitted by your captain at the end of the cruise. If, during the charter, the expenditure exceeds the sum already paid, additional cash funds will be required at once.

All outstanding bills from the yacht charter should be settled in cash or by bank transfer before your final disembarkation. Of course, any remaining credit at the end of your charter will be reimbursed to you in full. On request, transfer arrangements to and from the yacht can be made by Burgess or by the yacht’s captain, payment for which will be deducted from your APA.

The Red Sea, Middle East

There are few experiences on Earth like a Red Sea luxury yacht charter, where the desolate and dramatic desert landscape contrasts with the colour-filled aquatic wonders awaiting beneath the glassy seas of the Middle East .

Shopping enthusiasts will be amazed by the choice available to them, particularly in Saudi Arabia, where the shopping centres are part of the culture and have art galleries and libraries within as well as the expected shops, cinemas and eateries. Sample a wide range of local dishes from street vendors to award-winning restaurants, and party the night away to live music at ambient bars and clubs indoors and under the stars.

The incredible marine life is one of the main attractions for visitors to the region, and with your own transport, crew and flexible itinerary, you can make your way to the best sites and spend as much time there as you desire. Spend your days playing with the water toys in the shallows, snorkel and Scuba dive at thriving reefs and then rest on one of the incredible beaches sipping on a cool cocktail at sundown.

The Red Sea is home to 200 species of hard and soft corals which attract myriad fish species as well as sharks, dolphins, rays, turtles and the rare dugongs. This lively eco system has countless dive sites covering reefs, canyons and wrecks that will thrill experienced divers while making for a memorable training ground for beginners.

A Red Sea luxury yacht charter is an opportunity for sun, sand and sea in a region that has proven its excellence without attracting too much international attention so far. Now is an excellent time to discover this culturally rich destination before the rest of the world does.

Five quick reasons to visit the Red Sea

Magnificent rare marine species, Perfect for water sports, Unique desert landscape, Fantastic beaches, Year-round sunshine

More about this part of the Middle East

The Red Sea is situated between the east countries of Egypt , Sudan, Eritrea and Djibouti, and Israel, Jordan, Saudi Arabia and Yemen. These long desert coastlines provide stark contrasts between remote sandy beaches fringed by sapphire seas and towering ancient settlements and modern day resorts with spas, golf courses and beach bars and restaurants.

The region has undergone a significant transformation to boost tourism in recent years and the cities offer Scuba diving services as well as activities such as sky diving, paragliding, rock climbing and much more.

The Red Sea Yacht Charter Experiences

A cruise along the Western side of the Red Sea will take guests to striking turquoise lagoons fringed with pale sands that are perfect for an afternoon sunbathing in the shade, snorkelling or simply soaking in the wonderfully warm temperatures of the sea. Wadi el Gemal National Park is close to Marsa Alam and is a treat for non-motorised water sports and picture-perfect scenery, and the nearby resort town has plenty of bars, clubs and restaurants if you desire a change from eating on board. Unwind after an action-packed day with a massage, then stargaze from the sunbeds aboard your vessel or turn in early for a comfortable night's rest in air-conditioned cabins.

Jeddah in Saudi Arabia is a city not to be missed: Shop for the latest local and international fashions in the malls and pick up some choice souvenirs in the local markets. The Athr Galley will give insight into the thriving contemporary arts scene within the city, while for a truly ancient and atmospheric attraction close to the port, visit the old town of Al-Balad, which has been standing since the 7th Century, and the nearby museum Dokkan albalad.

Scuba diving in the region is abundant, from the 10m/32.8ft deep Moses Rock and 15m/49.2ft Dolphin Reef in Israel to the plethora of coral reefs, canyons and wrecks along the Egyptian coast. The shores of Egypt alone boast a massive variety of dive sites for all ability levels, and snorkelers can have close encounters with the wildlife and amazing fauna at the shallowest sites under 10m/33ft. Sharks, octopi, turtles, rays and dolphins are all spotted in the region on a regular basis, while a cruise to the popular resort of Marsa Alam might result in an encounter with dugongs.

The SS THISTLEGORM was listed as one of the 'Top 10 Diving Sites in the World' by The Times, and this 1940s armed merchant navy ship rests on the seabed at 30m/100ft. Following her sinking, she was rediscovered by Jacques Cousteau in the 1950s using information from local fisherman, and is now a popular dive site for Scuba enthusiasts of an intermediate level and beyond.

Sataya Reef is a wildlife sanctuary and visitors of all ages will be awed by the curiosity and friendliness of these creatures as you swim among them.

Another exceptional and popular dive site is the Elphinstone Reef, where the brightly coloured coral walls are visited by sea turtles and Oceanic white-tipped sharks. The strong currents will take experienced dives on a drift dive for a thrilling tour through the area.

Things to Consider:

Yachting seasons & climate:.

Temperatures in the Middle East reach a high of 35°C/95°F in summer months of April to October, with July-August being the peak. At night it can drop by more than 10°C/20°F.

The winter months of December until March experience a low of 23°C/73°F during the day and at night the temperatures are a cool 14°C/57°F. This is considered the best time to visit for guests who want to spend a lot of time out of the water, sunbathing along the beaches or sightseeing in the region. The trade-off for a winter yacht charter is that conditions on the water are choppier so that diving is inadvisable during this time.

The sea temperature varies between 20°C/68°F and 30°C/86°F throughout the year, providing 'warm bath' temperatures for those looking to wallow in the shallows, and excellent conditions for beginner divers and those more experienced who want to go deeper without having to worry about cold exposure. Summer is the best time to visit for water sports activities due to the calmer seas.

Clothing to Pack For Your Charter:

The Red Sea has a desert climate alleviated by the sea breezes, with a hot summer and a warm winter, with temperatures dropping noticeably at night. A jumper (sweater) is recommended for colder nights, as is a wind breaker. A hat is an essential accessory throughout the year to shade from the intense sunshine.

For time spent on the beach and aboard your luxury yacht it is advisable to pack natural, breathable fibres and a loose long layer to cover up once you are done sunbathing. The resorts and popular tourist locations have a more relaxed dress code, however when visiting religious sites and more conservative areas visitors should cover shoulders, collar bones and knees.

Main Ports and Marinas:

Jazan Port (Saudi Arabia), Jeddah Marina (Saudai Arabia), Eilat Port (Israel), Suez Port (Egypt), Marina El Gouna (Egypt), Sagafa Port (Egypt), Berenice Port (Egypt), Port Sudan (Sudan), Massawa Port (Eritrea), Djibouti Port (Djibouti)

Famous Restaurants & Clubs:

White Elephant Thai Restaurant And Sushi Bar (Sharm el Sheikh), Camel Bar & Roof Bar & Club (Naama Bay), On Deck Restaurant (Naama Bay), Viva Beach Bar (Naama Bay), The Lodge Bar (Hurghada Marina)

A Must See Attraction:

Wadi el Gemal National Park (Marsa Alam, Egypt), Coral Beach Nature Reserve (Eilat, Israel), Farasan Island Marine Sanctuary (Saudi Arabia), Athr Gallery (Jeddah, Saudi Arabia), Al-Balad 'Old Town' (Jeddah, Saudi Arabia)

Best beaches to visit on your yacht:

Coral Beach (Jordan), El Gona (Egypt), Hurghada Beach (Egypt), Safaga black sand beach (Egypt), Soma Bay (Egypt), Sharm El Lili (Egypt), Marsa Mubarak (Egypt), Yanbu Al Bahr Beach (Saudi Arabia), Silver Sands Beach (Saudi Arabia)

Local Yacht Events:

Red Sea Week

Best time to go:

The best time to visit the Red Sea depends on the kind of interests and itinerary that guests want to have during their luxury yacht charter: The winter has cooler temperatures for longer time spent on the beaches and visiting cultural sites, but due to rougher sea conditions it is unsuitable for most Scuba dives.

The summer is the most popular time to go and in comparison is an excellent time for underwater adventuring and guests can still enjoy time outdoors with a cooling sea breeze, and plenty of shade provided by a beach setup.

YOUR TRIP IN

Charter Itinerary in the RED SEA

CHARTERS RED SEA | MEGA YACHT CHARTER RED SEA

Red Sea

NEOM TOUR: SINDALAH MARINE SANCTUARY

After arriving at Neom airport, why not start your charter vacation in style by transferring by helicopter from here to the nearby Sindalah island to join your yacht? After a welcome drink, relax, settle in and enjoy a dip in the turquoise water before setting off to visit the island’s artisan villages. Enjoy an update on the NEOM project and sign a pledge to project the wildlife and the region during your trip. Cruise to Sindalah Marine Sanctuary. Desert island exploring & unique beach experience of archaeological artefacts by DMC awaits.

NEOM TOUR: GEORGIOS G. SHIPWRECK AND WADI TAYYB-ESM

The hidden gem of Saudi Arabia - Georgios G shipwreck is best known for being one of the best places to dive in the northern parts of the Kingdom. It is a half-sunken shipwreck with a stunning beach and mountain backdrop. The “The Titanic of Saudi Arabia” was built in England and ran into the reef in 1978. This area is famous for clear water, moray eels, lionfish, barracudas, sand tiger sharks, and garden eels. Later on explore Wadi Tayyib, one of the magical natural wonders of Saudi Arabia, and walk down the scenic route down the canyon.

Red Sea

NEOM TOUR: YUBA’S CORAL

Spend the third day of your trip island-hopping and soaking in the sun on the white sand beaches of Shusha Island - the perfect location for snorkelling. Explore the nearby point B in Yuba Island for the best snorkelling and diving experience. In the evening, travel to Om Thalajah sand bar for a magical sunset dinner.

Be among the first to access the “Maldives of the Red Sea ”. Stop at untouched islands off the exquisite Umluj. Explore these wild shores, learn about the conservation projects in the area and enjoy an exclusive picnic in paradise. North of the town, travelers can venture to more than 100 small islands known for their egg-white sands and ancient swaying palms, and home to a gentle technicolor world of nudibranchs, turtles and dugongs living in the aquarium-like waters. The beach at Umluj is postcard-pretty, but the main attraction is taking a boat to islands like Jabal Hassan, or relaxing at palm-covered coastal beaches such as Ras Al Shaaban and Doqm. From town, it’s possible to tour nearby mango farms or travel about an hour inland to Harrat Lunayyir. Here, discover a curious black lava field of craters and cones, which feels a world away from the dunes and turquoise waters of the coast.

Red Sea

AL ULA AND MARAYA

Located in north-western Saudi Arabia, Al Ula is cradled in a spectacular valley with palm groves running through its centre and sandstone cliffs surrounding it. Dating to pre-Islamic times, Saudi Arabia’s first UNESCO location is the largest preserved site of the Nabatean civilisation. Tour more than 100 well-preserved tombs with elaborate facades cut into the rock. After head towards the magnificent Maraya Concert Hall which has set a Guinness record for the largest mirrored building in the world. Maraya (meaning mirrors in Arabic) has been dubbed the “mirrored wonder” due to the giant sheets of glass attached to its structure, which reflect Al Ula’s breathtaking landscape.

Commonly known to locals as the ``Spring by the Sea``, Yanbu is a popular destination and is known throughout the region for its miles of beautiful beaches, water sports and aquatic landscape. The city of Yanbu played an important role in the development of Saudi Arabia and was once a very famous port. One of the nicest and quietest beaches in the country, Yanbu Beach offers visitors a perfect escape from the city. Experience scuba diving, sailing, fishing, jet skiing and much more. Or take a break from the action and find several picnic areas or places to take a long stroll. Although large stretches of the waterfront are covered in stone or cement that slopes down to the water, there are several places where you can enter the water for a swim or snorkel.

Red Sea

Spend the last day of your magical trip in Jeddah, the main Saudi seaport on the Red Sea. The city’s architecture is a mixture of ancient mud houses, historic souks that sell everything from automobiles parts to the best chocolates imaginable, and multiple shopping malls with the latest designer products. Add this to the 30 km boardwalk – The Corniche - along the Red Sea, and you have a city which is exotic and yes, romantic. In addition to scuba diving (some say, the best in the world), there are a large number of recreational options: desert hiking and desert camping trips, tennis, team sports (e.g., baseball, soccer, rugby, cricket, etc.), swimming, horseback riding, etc.

About Red Sea

Why is Red Sea a good sailing destination?

The Red Sea is not just a sailing destination; it’s a mesmerizing journey into a world that combines natural splendor, historical intrigue, and unparalleled adventure, all available through Yachting.Rent.

The incredible marine life in the Red Sea’s coral reefs is some of the most diverse and well-preserved on the planet. The vibrant underwater ecosystem, home to over 1,200 species of fish and 200 types of corals, provides a thrilling exploration opportunity for snorkelers and divers. Dolphins, turtles, and even hammerhead sharks are part of this aquatic symphony.

The weather in the Red Sea is tailor-made for sailing. With consistent winds and warm waters throughout the year, sailors of all skill levels can enjoy the sea’s embrace. The lack of cyclones and the mild weather patterns provide a safe and pleasurable sailing experience.

Along the coasts of the Red Sea, history comes alive. From the ancient Egyptian temples and tombs to the relics of Ottoman and Roman empires, there’s a rich tapestry of human civilization to discover. The fusion of African, Middle Eastern, and Asian cultures adds a unique flavor to the region.

The Red Sea’s islands are a blend of sandy serenity and rugged beauty. Whether it’s the secluded beaches of the Egyptian coast or the wild landscapes of Saudi Arabia’s Farasan Islands, each offers a unique charm. These islands provide perfect anchorages for yachts and excellent spots for picnicking, swimming, or simply basking in the sun.

Resorts and marinas dotting the Red Sea coast offer a touch of luxury and convenience for sailors. Yachting.Rent ensures that the vessels are equipped with all modern amenities, so you can sail in style and comfort. Customized itineraries and professional crews enhance the quality of the journey.

The Red Sea’s beauty is fragile, and preserving it is a priority. Yachting.Rent promotes responsible sailing practices, emphasizing environmental stewardship. Our commitment to sustainability ensures that future generations can also enjoy this magnificent sea.

Sailing in the Red Sea is never monotonous. Water sports like windsurfing, kayaking, and jet-skiing add excitement to the trip. Fishing enthusiasts can try their luck in the abundant waters, while those seeking relaxation can find peace in the gentle rocking of the sea.

Situated between Africa and Asia, the Red Sea is easily accessible. Its proximity to major cities and tourist destinations adds to its allure as a preferred sailing destination.

The mineral-rich mud and waters of the Red Sea are known for their therapeutic qualities. Many sailors combine their voyage with wellness therapies that rejuvenate the body and mind.

In essence, the Red Sea offers a multifaceted sailing experience that resonates with adventure seekers, history buffs, nature lovers, and those in search of tranquility. Yachting.Rent brings this experience to you, crafting journeys that are not just vacations but lifetime memories. It’s more than a good sailing destination; it’s an extraordinary one.

What Choose

Sailing boat or Catamaran, what to sail in Red Sea

At Yachting.Rent, we understand that the choice of your sailing vessel can greatly impact your maritime adventure in the Red Sea. Two popular choices among sailors and sea enthusiasts are the traditional sailing boat and the modern catamaran. Each of these vessels offers its own unique advantages, catering to different sailing styles and expectations.

If you are a sailing purist, you might lean towards the traditional sailing boat. With its monohull design, a sailing boat is made for cutting through the waves, offering the classic feeling of being one with the wind and sea. As you navigate the Red Sea, a sailing boat will offer you an exhilarating sailing experience, providing the perfect blend of performance and pleasure. The sleek and elegant design of a sailing boat gives it an air of sophistication, making it an ideal choice for those who value tradition and the authentic sailing experience.

On the other hand, if you prioritize comfort, stability, and space, then a catamaran might be your vessel of choice. The twin-hull design of a catamaran gives it superior stability, minimizing the rolling movement, which is especially beneficial for those who are prone to seasickness. A catamaran also boasts a larger deck and interior space, perfect for social gatherings or relaxing in the sun. The shallow draft of a catamaran allows you to explore closer to the coastline and anchor in shallower waters, perfect for exploring the diverse marine life and beautiful coral reefs of the Red Sea.

Regardless of your choice, Yachting.Rent ensures that all of our vessels are equipped with the latest navigational systems, safety equipment, and amenities to ensure your safety and comfort. Our experienced and professional crew members, with their extensive knowledge of the local sea conditions and marine life, will help make your voyage a unique and unforgettable experience.

Whether you choose the adventure and thrill of a sailing boat or the comfort and stability of a catamaran, Yachting.Rent is dedicated to providing you with an exceptional sailing experience in the Red Sea. We are here to ensure your voyage is perfectly tailored to your desires and expectations. Let us help you create memorable experiences and explore the wonders of the Red Sea in your own unique style.

The evolution of the Red Sea

With the removal of the high-risk area designation and continued infrastructure developments, what does the future hold for safe cruising in the region.

The Red Sea is evolving from a necessary transit route for yachts heading to the Indian Ocean and Asia from The Mediterranean, into a world-class yachting destination in its own right. Whilst the developments are relatively nascent in comparison to the ambition of Mohammed Bin Salman's vision for the region, work is already well underway in the Northwestern reaches of Saudi Arabia.

A significant feature (and potential stumbling block) for yachts considering Suez Canal transits and the Red Sea and Indian Ocean cruising has been the use of armed private security. Mandated by insurance premiums, this service formed as a reaction to the Somali Piracy threat that emerged in the mid-2000s.

This aspect of maritime security may now be coming to an end. At 00:01 UTC on 1 January 2023, the Indian Ocean High-Risk Area (HRA) as shown on UKHO Chart Q6099, was removed.

The removal of this designation is a reaction to the significantly reduced frequency of piracy-related incidents in the region. To further boost security, there is a multi-national naval task force tasked with combating piracy in the Somali basin by conducting a five-day operation aimed at increasing naval presence and informing the maritime community on the continuing risks to shipping despite a lull in Somali piracy and the expiration of a key industry designation.

The removal of this definition will undoubtedly serve as a boost to the significant superyacht infrastructure developments currently planned for the Red Sea and Gulf regions. Safe, economical and logistically sound cruising is vital to increasing visitation of a new generation of yachts looking to explore the exciting developments in the region.

The Line is probably the most globally recognised aspect of the NEOM project. However, the recent launch of Sindalah Island will become the first physical showcase of NEOM and is being marketed as an exclusive gateway to the Red Sea which will welcome the global yachting community. Sindalah's 86-berth marina and 75 offshore buoys aim to become a key destination itself.

red sea yacht

The Gulf of Aqaba is no further away from London than it is from Mumbai. As seen in the map above, The Jordanian port city itself is only 600 nautical miles from Cyprus and just over 1,000 nautical miles from Athens. NEOM is expected to be a self-sustaining city and will operate independently from the existing governmental framework of Saudi Arabia, with its laws, taxes and regulations.

The NEOM project is set to transform the Red Sea coast into a major luxury destination and will likely have a positive impact on the future of the superyacht industry. Exciting as it may be, the development requires the vital input of stakeholders in the superyacht industry to ensure that it is designed and constructed in the most sustainable and efficient manner possible with regard to luxury sports and recreation.

We would like to offer our loyal readership the opportunity to put forward their perspectives and opinions on the aforementioned projects. The survey embedded at the beginning of the article (which can also be reached through the link here ) will only take a few minutes of your time and will be used to better understand the attitude, appetite and appreciation of these incredible new destinations.

The answers to the surveyor may be completed in complete anonymity, however, we will also be offering our readers the opportunity to provide qualitative data via quick interview. For more information on the NEOM project visit the website here…

German Navy Helicopter Destroys Houthi Drone Boat

O ne day after a French Navy helicopter shot down a Houthi drone over the Red Sea , a German Navy helicopter has now successfully engaged one of the militants’  uncrewed surface vessels (USVs) in the same region. The incident reinforces the continued threat posed by Houthi drones and missiles of different kinds to shipping in the area, as well as the various different ways that the naval coalition has to defeat them.

According to the German Armed Forces’ Joint Forces Operational Command, the USV in question was destroyed by a helicopter launched from the Type 124 Sachsen class frigate Hessen. The warship is currently deployed as part of the Aspides mission , run by the European Union Naval Force (EUNAVFOR) and tasked with protecting commercial shipping in the Red Sea. According to the German military, the frigate “repelled an attack against a civilian convoy under tow in the Red Sea this morning. A surface drone was destroyed by the embarked helicopter. The Hessen is continuing its mission.”

No further details were provided about the type of USV that was destroyed, or exactly how it was engaged. However, Matthias Gebauer, a journalist for news magazine Der Spiegel, says that the USV “had already approached the convoy to within a few nautical miles, so speed was required.”

The description of a ship under tow (using the German word Schleppverband) suggests that the vessel targeted by the Houthis may have sustained prior damage, or a ship that was otherwise not able to move under its own power. It also suggests that Hessen may have been tasked with protecting that particular convoy when it came under attack.

The helicopter type involved wasn't specified, but the Hessen is known to have recently been operating with two embarked Sea Lynx Mk 88As. These multirole helicopters are typically armed with a single door-mounted 50-caliber heavy machine gun during these kinds of missions. In recent years, German Navy Sea Lynx have been repeatedly used for anti-piracy and boarding-party work.

A Germany Navy Sea Lynx Mk 88A armed with anti-submarine warfare torpedoes. Bundeswehr

While Houthi drones and missiles have been the most prominent targets of the naval task force in the Red Sea, there has also been a steady stream of USVs and uncrewed underwater vehicles (UUVs) to deal with.

Although past USV kills have not been attributed to particular assets, it's quite likely that embarked helicopters have previously been used to deal with these threats. Houthis pioneered the use of explosive-laden USVs, which were developed by their Iranian benefactors.

A video from January 2017 showing an explosive-laden Houthi USV striking a Saudi frigate:

As for the German Navy, we know that the Hessen has targeted Houthi drones in the air in at least one earlier incident. As we reported at the time , the Hessen downed two Houthi drones at close range while operating in the Red Sea late last month; weapons used were the 76mm deck gun and the RIM-116 Rolling Airframe Missile (RAM). In addition, the ship accidentally fired on an American  MQ-9 Reaper  drone while confused as to its identity.

The German Navy frigates Hessen (top) and Hamburg (nearest camera) during replenishment at sea maneuvers with the replenishment ship Berlin. Bundeswehr/Ricarda Schönbrodt

The Hessen  arrived  in the region only days ahead of these incidents, passing through the Suez Canal on February 24, after  departing Germany  on February 8.

Yesterday’s action involving a French Navy helicopter operating from one of its warships — possibly an  AS565 Panther from the Aquitaine class frigate  Alsace  — demonstrated the utility of rotorcraft when it comes to shooting down drones in the air, again using their door guns.

However, targeting USVs is actually much more central to the naval helicopter’s mission spectrum.

In the case of the U.S. Navy, we have reported in the past on how its workhorse MH-60S/R Seahawk embarked helicopter units have increasingly embraced the mission of defending against potential attacks from  swarms of small boats , in particular. USVs present a very similar threat class.

Both those U.S. Navy helicopters are well equipped for the task, having the option of being relatively heavily armed for force protection duties, including the ability to carry AGM-114 Hellfire missiles, M197 20mm Gatling guns, as well as 50-caliber guns and other crew-served weapons. In the latest Red Sea campaign, U.S. Navy MH-60R/S helicopters have also been used to destroy small crewed Houthi boats, as you can read about here .

The German Navy’s Sea Lynx Mk 88A does not have the same range of options when it comes to kinetic engagements of USVs, or other small waterborne craft, although, on this occasion its heavy machine gun was clearly up to the job. This is also a far less expensive application for this kind of target than the alternatives and provides some kind of standoff engagement capability.

Meanwhile, today has also seen the Red Sea task force deal with other kinds of Houthi threats, including three ballistic missiles that EUNAVOR says were successfully intercepted by a French warship.

Overall, there seems no chance of the Houthi threat to shipping letting up any time soon, although the Yemen-based militants have now come to an agreement with China and Russia to ensure that their vessels don’t come under attack. This understanding on safe passage was reached during talks in Oman.

As previously mentioned, it’s very likely that earlier engagements of Houthi drones involved gun-armed helicopters and, as the Red Sea campaign continues, there are almost certain to be more such incidents to come.

Crew of tanker in Red Sea reported safe after suspected attack by Yemen’s Houthi rebels

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — An attack by Yemen’s Houthi rebels targeted a tanker in the Red Sea early Friday but the ship’s crew was unharmed, authorities said. It was the latest in the rebels’ campaign against shipping over Israel’s ongoing war on Hamas in the Gaza Strip.

READ MORE: A likely Yemen Houthi attack hits ship, causing the first ‘fatalities’ in group’s continued assaults on shipping in Red Sea

The British military’s United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations center initially reported the ship had been “struck by a missile” off the port city of Hodeida but later Friday said that further inspection of the vessel in daylight found no damage.

It described the crew as being “safe” and said the ship was continuing on its way.

The private security firm Ambrey also reported Friday’s attack and said the tanker with armed guards aboard had a “near miss” on Thursday off the coast of Yemen in the Gulf of Aden. It said the ship had been Israel-affiliated but changed owners in February.

In a statement, the Houthis claimed responsibility for the attack and identified the tanker as the Panama-flagged, Vietnamese-owned Pacific 01. That tanker previously had been owned by Singapore-based Eastern Pacific Shipping, which has been repeatedly targeted by the Houthis. That company is ultimately controlled by Israeli billionaire Idan Ofer.

The rebels also claimed they targeted an American destroyer, without elaborating. U.S. warships have repeatedly been targeted by Houthi missile and drone attacks.

The Houthis have attacked ships since November, saying they want to force Israel to end its offensive in Gaza.

The ships targeted by the Houthis, however, largely have had little or no connection to Israel, the U.S. or other nations involved in the war. The rebels have also fired missiles toward Israel, though they have largely fallen short or been intercepted.

The assaults on shipping have raised the profile of the Houthis, who are members of Islam’s minority Shiite Zaydi sect, which ruled Yemen for 1,000 years until 1962.

READ MORE: Yemen’s Houthis have hypersonic missile, according to Russian state media, possibly raising stakes in Red Sea crisis

A report Thursday claimed the Houthis now had a hypersonic missile, potentially increasing that cachet and putting more pressure on Israel after a cease-fire deal failed to take hold in Gaza before the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.

Hypersonic missiles would pose a more serious threat to American and allied warships in the region.

Earlier in March, a Houthi missile struck a commercial ship in the Gulf of Aden, killing three of its crew members and forcing survivors to abandon the vessel. It marked the first fatal attack by the Houthis on shipping.

Other recent Houthi actions include an attack last month on a cargo ship carrying fertilizer, the Rubymar, which later sank after drifting for several days.

Jon Gambrell, the news director for the Gulf and Iran for The Associated Press, has reported from each of the Gulf Cooperation Council countries, Iran and other locations across the world since joining the AP in 2006.

Red Sea Fighting Traps Two Oil Ships in Houthi Waters

LONDON/ADEN (Reuters) - Two tankers, containing oil and toxic waste, are stuck in the Red Sea in the firing line between Western naval forces and Yemen's Houthi militants despite repeated efforts by the United Nations to empty and move the ships to avoid a spill.

The vessels, one of which has been stranded for years, are near the port of Ras Issa from where Iran-aligned Houthis launch missiles on ships passing through the Red Sea and where U.S. missiles land as they target the Houthis.

The United Nations last year led efforts to remove a million barrels of oil from the decaying tanker, the FSO Safer, to a new tanker, the MT Yemen, in an operation that cost $121 million.

War in Israel and Gaza

The UN had hoped to move the FSO Safer, which still contains toxic waste water and oily residue, for disposal elsewhere and sell the oil aboard the MT Yemen.

Neither of the ships has moved since August as the Houthis and their foes in Yemen’s internationally-recognised government could not agree who should receive the money for the oil, a Houthi source speaking on condition of anonymity told Reuters.

The source also said there was no an agreement to tow the ship away.

The UN Development Programme said it was in discussion "with all relevant parties in Yemen" about the handover of the vessel.

"(UNDP) has not had any indication from the de facto authorities in Yemen of threats to deliberately damage the vessel," a UNDP spokesperson said, referring to the Houthis.

A source with the internationally recognised Yemeni government, also speaking on condition of anonymity, said he believed the Houthis have refused to release either of the ships and were using them to increase their bargaining power.

TOXIC SLUDGE

A former supertanker built in the 1970s, the FSO Safer was converted into a floating storage and offloading facility for oil before the outbreak of civil war in Yemen in 2014.

It is so decayed its rotting hull threatened to spill its cargo into the Red Sea.

Last year, the United Nations contracted Dutch-based SMIT Salvage, which removed the oil. Belgium's Euronav provided the MT Yemen vessel.

The toxic sludge and wash water used to scrub oil out of the tanker have still not been removed, a shipping source said.

He asked not to be named due to the sensitivity of the matter and added that some 70,000 metric tons of residue were still onboard the FSO Safer.

A spokesperson for Boskalis, the parent company of SMIT salvage, said it had been contracted to remove the oil but not the Safer vessel.

Belgium's Euronav has maintained a crew onboard the MT Yemen since August under its contract with the UN.

"Once the handover process is complete, the crew will leave," the UNDP spokesperson said.

Euronav said it continued to assist the UNDP to safely handover the MT Yemen. It did not specify who might ultimately receive the ship.
