Mercer 44 Retired Design *

Designed by: william tripp.

The Mercer 44 is a traditional cruising boat often referred to as Bill Tripp’s best design. She was designed with sailing performance in mind with a full keel and centerboard for additional stability while sailing and ease of anchoring in any harbor while cruising. Her flush deck allows for ease of movement when going forward. The interior sleeps seven which is wonderful for a boat with a 30’ waterline. Standard equipment includes sloop rig, diesel inboard, head, galley, life lines, winches, and varnished mahogany interior. Options include Yawl rig, roller furling headsail, spinnaker gear, navigation station and more.

NOTE: SYNIA will be departing for 2-3 months in the Bahamas this winter, and then departing for the Mediterranean in May 2019 to spend the Summer and Fall attending the Paneria Classic Yacht Challenge off Spain, France and the Balearic Islands.

The Mercer 44 has the greatest longevity of any of Bill Tripp's designs and the Mercer 44 is said to be Bill Tripp's favorite. Thus, it's understandable that the few people who have owned one consider it a privilege and honor. The Mercer 44 took her name from where she was built in Trenton, New Jersey -- Mercer County -- by Mercer Reinforced Plastics. This design is largely a flush-decked version of the Bermuda 40, with a well-proportioned doghouse on an otherwise flush deck. All owners of Mercer 44s have high praise for the incredible sailing qualities and beautiful design.

When comparing the Mercer 44 with the Hinckley Bermuda 40 (both designed by Bill Tripp), the Mercer's flush deck gives the main cabin enhanced spaciousness and opens up the otherwise traditional layout. It has a proper head with hot water shower and huge hanging lockers opposite. Mercer 44s do not appear on the used boat market very often because their owners love them.

The tooling for this boat was acquired by Cape Cod Shipbuilding after 1962 after Mercer Reinforced Plastics had built the first six boats. Since then, Cape Cod has built eight more, including SYNIA , in 1978, for Charles Struthers who circimnavigated South America and cruised aboard her to Antarctica.

The present, (second) owner of SYNIA completed a three year re-fit which continues even today to include top-side Awlgrip, mast & spars, spray-on RinoLiner non-skid, bright work inside & out, complete re-wiring, micro-wave/convection oven, television & stereo, ice maker, new navigation station, upholstery, interior paint and varnish, rebuilt stove (w/electric convection cook tops), new plumbing, new sail covers/cushions, electric windless, 10' hard sailing dinghy w/chocks, 3.5 Kw NextGen with complete electrical installation, AeroGen 40-amp wind generator, ICOM M304 VHF w/Mast mounted antenna, ICOM M720a SSB-HAM w/large DynaPlate with advanced grounding & ICOM auto-antenna tuner, Spin Tec Roller Furling System, new LEE SAILS mainsail, roller furling jib(s), 3 new hatches (fiberglass over teak), dedicated bilge pump for chain locker, holding tank with deck pump-out & overboard discharge, rebuilt Westerbeke 4-108 (2014 w/250 hours), rebuilt hydraulic transmission, new cutlass w/dripless shaft seal, HydroVane Self-Steering ... and much, much more. This is a beautiful, professionally fitted yacht that is at home in both the Classic Yacht Regatta Circuit, as well as suited for the serious long-distance cruiser.

Yacht race to Havana resumes after 58 years, complete with Cuban crew

  • Paul Guzzo Times staff

ST. PETERSBURG

There is a race within the race that marks the return this week of the St. Petersburg-Habana regatta.

It will determine who makes history by becoming the first Cuban-born captain in more than five decades to lead a boat from the United States to the island nation.

"We all want to be the first with a Cuban leader to finish," said Anthony Scaglione, 32, a Tampa native who serves on the crew of the 37-foot cruising yacht LaVie . "Hopefully, it is us."

The LaVie is captained by Martin Saavedra, 68, of Tampa, a native of Cuba who came to the United States at 12.

At least two other yachts are captained by Cuban natives — one living in Toronto and the other a Cuban citizen.

For this regatta and for the first time since the Cuban Revolution, the Cuban government is allowing a yacht from the island to participate in a U.S. sailing competition.

And a longtime Cuban law banning Cuban-born people from returning to the island by sea was recently loosened to accommodate U.S.-based commercial cruises to the island with passengers who include Cuban-born Americans.

"We are very excited," said Mario Perez, 55, the Cuban-born captain of the 40-foot cruising yacht The Tiger , who has lived in Toronto since 1992. "We can't believe we finally can do this."

The crew of the boat from Cuba, the Micara , didn't receive permission from its government to participate until Monday morning so it was not able to make it to St. Petersburg in time for the start of the race at 10 a.m. Tuesday.

They planned to join the regatta in Key West.

This means the Micara is not part of the official race, but it doesn't stop the boat from competing for bragging rights against The Tiger and LaVie.

The St. Petersburg-Habana Yacht Race ran from 1930 through 1959. It was canceled in 1960 with the deterioration of United States-Cuban relations.

Inspired by the move by President Barack Obama to reach out to Cuba, the St. Petersburg Yacht Club revived the race after a hiatus of 58 years.

It has returned bigger than ever.

At its peak, the original regatta had more than 30 competitors. This year's drew 81 yachts, 75 of them in the competition.

"It is amazing how much good can be accomplished when people work together," said Albert A. Fox Jr., founder of Tampa's Alliance for Responsible Cuba Policy Foundation, who for a year worked as a liaison between the St. Petersburg Yacht Club and the Cuban government.

The size of the competing boats is 30 to 120 feet, said Richard Winning, commodore of the St. Petersburg Yacht Club. There will be an overall champion plus trophies presented to the first to finish in each class: spinnaker, non-spinnaker, multi-hull and cruising.

Some crews number as many as a dozen. Others are as small as three.

All but six boats have home ports in Florida, but the crews are made up of an estimated 550 sailors from all over the world — Canada, England, France, Germany, Spain, the Netherlands and South Africa among them.

"To be part of the revival of this race is pretty cool," said England's Henry Bomby, 26, who is part of the crew for the Fomo , a 40-foot spinnaker captained by St. Petersburg's Lloyd Thornburg. "I'm excited to be a part of history."

Seeing the island that was long difficult to visit for Americans was a primary reason others are participating in the regatta.

"This is a great opportunity to visit a nation I've never seen," said Tampa's Art Cupps, 50, captain of the 44-foot cruising yacht First Wind .

The yachts should all reach the finish at Marina Hemingway by Thursday.

Then on Saturday, most will take part in a 15-mile race to the historic Morro Castle that will include more Cuban boats.

St. Petersburg Mayor Rick Kriseman is leading a delegation flying to Havana to watch the second race and enjoy other regatta-related festivities.

Vicente Amor of Tampa travel agency Asc International booked airline tickets for 88 locals plus 136 rooms for them and sailors.

"Cubans from outside Cuba are reuniting with Cuba," said Commodore José Miguel Díaz Escrich of Marina Hemingway in Havana. "All the participants are part of an expression of love between the two countries."

Mercer 44 Sea Fever

Pictures   |   Contact Form

Sea Fever, Mercer Boatwork's 4th 44, is most recently owned by William & Kelly Lonigan from Sacramento, CA and is docked in Emeryville, CA. She was purchased in 2008 from Tom Vocola. Bill and Kelly are completely restoring the boat having bought it in somewhat poor condition and in need to some TLC. Sea Fever has been completely redone on the exterior including new paint, striping and lettering, new main and jib sails, a new boom and boom vang, a new lazy-jack system, new shrouds, spreaders, all CG lighting and running lights, new headstay, backstay, and topping lift, including a complete refurbishing of the mast with new electronics.

They have been working with the original boatyard to learn about the way the original interior was constructed so that we can put her back in that condition. They have been wonderful to work with. Further, we have pulled the diesel engine and gearbox and had them totally refurbished, added a new propeller shaft and three blade propeller. All new batteries and engine cavity wiring have been installed.

Tom Voccola bought SeaFever from Alex and Penny Haughwout in 1988. Tom had learned to sail on SeaFever and Alex asked him to buy her when his sailing days were over. He sailed her all over Long Island and the East Coast and bought a house and a dock in Milford, CT just to house her.

In 1993 he moved to California and he trucked SeaFever out in 1997. Sitting for four years in the water took its toll so Tom began to completely restore her in 2004 (??) doing all the work himself. He replaced all the rigging, much of the deck, the dog house windows and hatches. He also renewed the interior with new electrical, plumbing and installed a booth on the starboard side, replacing two of the bunks.

As an aside, Sea Fever Gear in North Chatham, MA was started by Pixie & Penny (Haughwout I think) as a tribute to their beloved family boat.

Here are some pictures of SeaFever:
