Simple logo for marine electronic equipment company: 33 South

Simple and crisp design for 33 South as marine equipment company. If we look at the design maybe there are no meaning inside but actually the "sailboat" tells us about the company name itself. The two sail that is simplified as two "tri"angle represent "33" and the boat body is an abstract arrow that point to the "south". The slant sail is the representation of the company target market i.e. racing sailboat.

North Cape was inspired by a place called Nordkapp in Norway, it's the most northerly point of Europe. It is located on the 1000-mile Arctic Highway which runs from Kirkenes to Mo-i-Rana, entirely within the arctic circle. I rode this route on my motorcycle a few years ago and it was a very memorable journey. I'm not sure if this has anything to do with the logo or the Foundation's identity, but I provide it just as a bit of background. It is not necessary to include anything specific about this place in the logo but it may provide some inspiration.

Custom Sail Graphics Are Easier & Cheaper Than You Think

Custom sail graphics aren’t just for sponsored racers; anyone—racer, cruiser or in-between—can have their favorite graphic or team logo put onto their sails, and it’s much less expensive than you realize. The Quantum service team dives into the options and what you need to know to give your sail your own personal touch. 

As beautiful as a full set of crisp white sails are, there is something to be said for the added color and fun a cool graphic can add. With a number of different techniques, there are many things you can do to your sail to help you make your sails your own. 

Generally sail graphics are more popular with racing teams putting their team name or sponsor logos on their sails. But today, it’s easy for anyone to get a custom graphic, whether it’s a family insignia, a team logo, or a cool graphic to go with your boat name. 

It’s a common misconception that the cost of a custom graphic is way out of reach of most boat owners, but depending on the artwork and method of application, it can actually be quite reasonable. What really drives the price of a custom graphic is size, complexity, and the number of colors—the more colors and the more complex, the more expensive a graphic will be.

Not only does Quantum build sails with custom graphics, but we can help you design the perfect graphic for you, too. Custom sail graphics can be applied to any new or old, upwind or downwind sails, no matter if they’re Dacron, nylon, or Quantum Fusion M…and they make great gifts for that sailor who “has everything.”

There are four primary techniques of application that vary in price and practicality depending on what kind of sail material the graphic is being applied on; not every application technique is good for every material.  

Hand inking

Inking is the most common method of applying a graphic because it’s the most cost effective, it can be used on just about any fabric, and if weight is an issue, it’s one of the lightest. The process is similar to screen printing and is best for simple graphics on light-colored sails, either upwind Dacron sails or white nylon spinnakers. On a working sail, the logo would be applied to both sides of the sail, while on a spinnaker the inked logo is typically only applied to one side.

Dye Sublimation

For really intricate logos, for example the roaring tiger on the spinnaker of Mark Kennedy’s Flying Tiger 10M Cento Miglia, dye sublimation is used. The logo is mapped out onto the panels of the spinnaker—this process is best for nylon—and printed onto a roll of fabric. The panels are then cut out and reassembled as the spinnaker. This process allows intricate graphics with a large number of colors to be faithfully reproduced.

“We’ve done some really beautiful projects over the years. The Swan 80 Selene was one of our first major dye sublimation projects. It turned out really well, and since then we’ve done several other sails for the customer,” said Graphics Manager Sean McDowell.

Graphics can also be printed on sticky-back vinyl and applied to the sail as a sticker. This is most commonly used on upwind sails, and is particularly effective on darker membrane sails. It’s particularly good for simple shapes, letters, and numbers.

One of the largest bottles of Coors Light ever produced was for Skip Ely’s Santa Cruz 52 Elyxir. The bottle stretches from the head to the foot of the mainsail. “The only option for putting a complicated graphic like this on a membrane mainsail was to use sticky-back vinyl,” said McDowell. “The vinyl has a crisp, glossy finish and the colors appear bold even from a distance.”

This isn’t the most common method, but it is the most dramatic and longest-lasting application technique for a spinnaker. Pieces of fabric in contrasting colors are sewn into the sail, whether it’s black on red or white on blue, and the logo can be seen from both sides. The panels are carefully laid in along the same thread pattern as the original cloth so as not to affect the integrity of the sail. This process is also good for simpler logos in just a few colors.

If you have artwork available, adding a graphic to your sail is a relatively simple process. If you have an idea or an image, Quantum can help you turn it into a graphic appropriate for application on a sail.

To get the process started, talk to your sail maker or request a quote . “The best time to consider a graphic is at the time of purchase, or really, any time else,” says Quantum National Service Director Charles Saville. “Graphics can be put on new or older sails, but the earlier it’s applied, the more enjoyment you’ll get out of it.”

Iranian special forces seize cargo vessel in a key shipping lane, state media reports

Iranian special forces seized a container ship near the Strait of Hormuz, a key shipping lane to the Persian Gulf, the state-run IRNA news agency reported Saturday.

Navy special forces from the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps used a helicopter to board and seize a container ship, IRNA news reported, adding that the MSC Aries was being transferred to Iranian territorial waters.

Video on the state-owned news network Press TV showed what it said were people using a rope to drop onto the ship. NBC News could not independently verify the footage.

The move could escalate tensions in a region reeling from the war in Gaza and a recent strike, suspected to have been carried out by Israel, that killed senior Iranian military officers. Since Hamas’ deadly Oct. 7 terror attack and mass hostage taking and Israel’s subsequent full-scale assault on the Gaza Strip, more than 33,000 people have been killed and 75,000 others have been injured.

And attacks by Iran-backed  Houthi militants  on ships in the Red Sea have already rocked global trade as several major shipping lines and oil transporters suspended their services through the waterway.

As companies avoid the Suez Canal, which feeds into the Red Sea, and opt instead to go around Africa to get to the Indian Ocean, it can add up to 14 days to a shipping route, incurring higher fuel costs. And since ships take a longer time to get to their destinations, delays in container and commodity deliveries are inevitable.

IRNA said the Portuguese-flagged ship was operated by the Zodiac shipping company, which is part of Israeli billionaire Eyal Ofer’s Zodiac Group. Zodiac said in a statement that the ship is managed and operated by the U.K.-based shipping company, MSC, which confirmed Saturday that the MSC Aries had been “boarded by Iranian authorities via helicopter.” The shipping company also said there were 25 crew members onboard and that it is working with “relevant authorities” to ensure their safety.

Iranian authorities did not immediately issue a public statement on the incident.

The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations agency said on X that the MSC Aries had been seized 50 nautical miles northeast of the Fujairah, an area close to the Strait of Hormuz that forms the entrance to the Persian Gulf.

When asked by NBC News, the Israeli government said it had no comment on the ship’s seizure. But Israel Katz, the country’s foreign minister, said on X that Iran was “now conducting a pirate operation in violation of international law.”

In a separate statement Saturday that was not in response to the incident unfolding in the Strait of Hormuz, Israeli military spokesperson Rear Adm. Daniel Hagari said that Iran would “bear the consequences for choosing to escalate the situation any further.”

“Israel is on high alert. We have increased our readiness to protect Israel from further Iranian aggression. We are also prepared to respond,” he said.

The attack comes after a strike, suspected to have been carried out by Israel, on the Iranian consular building in the Syrian capital of Damascus earlier this month. Israel did not take responsibility for that strike, but Tehran vowed revenge.

Brig. Gen. Mohammad Reza Zahedi, a senior member of the Quds Force, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps ’ elite foreign espionage group, was killed in the blast. He was the most senior Iranian official to be killed since Gen. Qassem Soleimani was targeted by an American airstrike in 2020.

Five military advisers in the IRGC, Iran’s immensely powerful military and political organization, were also killed in the attack. While Israel and Iran have avoided direct conflict for years, the IRGC has helped Tehran wage a shadow war with Israel across the Middle East.

After the attack, Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei , said at a prayer ceremony celebrating the end of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan on Wednesday that Israel “must be punished, and it will be punished.” Since the building destroyed was a consular building, he said, it amounted to an attack on Iranian soil.

The United States has signaled its support for Israel and worked to persuade Iran to stop short of a significant escalation. While increasingly critical of the way Israel is pursuing the war in Gaza, President Joe Biden has pledged that America’s “commitment to Israel’s security against these threats from Iran and its proxies is ironclad.”

As China's navy grows, the US fleet is on a 'downward trajectory,' maritime expert says

• The threat of a conflict over Taiwan has put the spotlight on the US and Chinese navies.
• The US Navy has been shrinking, meaning China's is now the world's largest.
• A major decline in US shipbuilding capacity could be a problem in the future, analysts say.

The oceans are once again becoming a key geopolitical battleground.

In the Indo-Pacific, the aggressive shadow of China is growing. Meanwhile, sea-based drone warfare in the Black Sea between Russia and Ukraine and the Houthi rebels' disruption of commercial shipping in the Red Sea have become conflict hot spots.

"It's the end of the pacifist period on the seas," Dr Steven Wills of the Center for Maritime Strategy, told Business Insider.

The US fleet is still widely considered the world's most powerful navy due to its 11 aircraft carriers and cutting-edge nuclear submarine capabilities.

However, while maritime pressures have increased, US shipbuilding has stagnated.

"In the early 1990s, the Navy had over 500 ships. But over the course of the 2000s and 2010s, there was a failure to properly follow up naval deployments with enough time for refit, repair, and rest," Wills explained.

As subsidies and funding for maritime infrastructure were cut in the post-Cold War period, industry capabilities slowed. That was compounded by a series of costly shipbuilding blunders .

"The US Navy was really rudderless. They didn't have an idea what it wanted to do," Wills said.

The fleet is now down to just under 300 ships.

Doug Livermore, who until recently was a senior intelligence officer and director of sensitive activities and special operations in the Navy, admits it's "not as robust of a ramp-up as it should be."

In the latest budget released in March, plans for seven new Arleigh Burke-class destroyers were reduced to six. Just one rather than two Virginia-class nuclear-powered attack submarines will be added, while 19 ships will be decommissioned.

"They're scrapping more ships than they're building, which means the US Navy is on a downward trajectory, not an upward trajectory," said Dr Salvatore Mercogliano, a maritime historian at Campbell University.

China outpacing the US

China has overtaken the US Navy in numerical terms with about 370 vessels, according to the Pentagon's 2023 China Military Power Report .

It will grow to be at least 50% larger than America's by 2035, a retired admiral projected in the US Naval Institute's professional journal.

Submarines, which have historically given the US primacy over the sea, are a high priority for the People's Liberation Army Navy.

China operates 60 submarines, according to the Pentagon's latest estimates. That number is expected to rise to 80 by 2035, despite the ongoing retirement of older hulls. Most of its submarines are diesel-powered, but it also has nuclear-powered attack and ballistic missile submarines that have higher speeds and longer ranges.

The US operates 67 submarines , but not all are in the Pacific.

China's navy is still not as technologically advanced, only has two aircraft carriers, and the fleet has minimal active experience, but Livermore says the pace of expansion remains a concern.

"In the early 2000s, the Chinese navy had nothing that could rival US vessels. They were primarily diesel-powered submarines, a few old and loud nuclear-powered submarines. The speed of development is worrying," he said.

Quantity vs quality

The numbers only tell one part of the story, however. Despite its smaller size compared with China, the US Navy is still widely regarded as the world's most powerful.

In 2020, then Secretary of Defense Mark Esper said that even if the US stopped building ships, it would take years for China to match the US Navy's power due to its technological capabilities and expertise.

"Ship numbers are important, but they don't tell the whole story," he said.

Another piece of the puzzle is shipbuilding capacity. China is the world's largest shipbuilder. It could use its manufacturing capacity to rapidly build more ships in wartime.

Chinese shipyards have a capacity of about 23.2 million tons, compared to the US' capacity of less than 100,000 tons, according to figures from the US Office of Naval Intelligence that emerged last year.

David Sacks, fellow for Asia studies at the Council on Foreign Relations, told BI: "One of China's largest shipyards has more capacity than all US shipyards combined. We have to maintain ships as well as obviously build new platforms, and we don't have the workers or the facilities to do that."

Peacetime footing

Gone are the days when merchant ships were built in bulk in the US, capacities that America used to expand its fleet by more than 15 times in World War II. In an extended war, China is poised to rapidly build this kind of vast fleet — a capacity the US lacks.

Instead, the US defense industrial base still finds itself on a post-Cold War peacetime footing, analysts told BI.

Expanding American shipbuilding capacity ought to start now, Wills said: "You don't make the arsenal of democracy overnight."

"The composition of the Navy is a long-term issue. If you want to start changing force structure, it takes time," Mercogliano said.

But given that Japan and South Korea now dominate commercial shipbuilding, some doubt whether this is a realistic or viable option.

That could have consequences in wartime. "It would be very hard to rapidly ramp up and replace battlefield losses just given the current state of the industry," Wills said. "That's not the industry's fault — they can only operate based on what the government gives them."

Taiwan tensions

Rising tensions over Taiwan are another reason some are questioning the size and shape of the US fleet.

Taiwan has been self-governed since 1949, but China sees it as a breakaway province that should be under its control.

While there have been no official signals about a looming conflict with Taiwan , China's leader Xi Jinping has said that he believes unification is inevitable and has refused to rule out using force to achieve that goal.

As a democratic ally in the region and home to a leading AI chipmaker in the form of TSMC, securing Taiwan's freedom is a key strategic and economic goal for the US.

Last month, the commander for the Indo-Pacific told lawmakers that Beijing would be ready to invade Taiwan by 2027.

If that ever happens, analysts fear the US Navy could find itself on the back foot.

The Council of Foreign Relations' Sacks pointed to a 2023 CSIS report that said the US would run out of many key munitions for a conflict over Taiwan within the first two weeks.

China's home advantage would also be significant, said Wills. "They're fighting a local game in their backyard whereas the US and everybody else, except Japan, is waging an away game. There are long logistics needed to make that happen."

"I think there ought to be a greater level of urgency here. I'm not seeing it," he added.

Countering Chinese aggression in the Indo-Pacific took center stage this week at the first-ever trilateral meeting between the US, Japan, and the Philippines.

The US announced more than $1 billion worth of private sector investment in chips and infrastructure to support the region and said security cooperation in the South China Sea had increased to "historic levels. "

In the week leading to the summit, the three countries and Australia held their first joint maritime military exercises in a further show of unity.

At least 94 dead in Mozambique after ferry boat capsizes

At least 94 people, including children, have died and 26 others are missing after a ferry boat capsized off the northern coast of Mozambique, say officials.

The vessel was an overloaded fishing boat and was not licenced to transport people, Lourenco Machado, an administrator of the country’s Maritime Transport Institute (INTRASMAR) said on state television on Monday.

“Because the boat was overcrowded and unsuited to carry passengers, it ended up sinking,” he told the BBC, adding that many children were among the dead.

Videos posted on social media X showed many bodies lying on a beach and some people carrying the bodies of children. The Reuters news agency could not immediately verify these videos.

The Southern African country, one of the world’s poorest, has recorded almost 15,000 cases of waterborne disease and 32 deaths since October, according to government data.
