With the options to explore beautiful and exotic coastal city’s and gorgeous tropical islands, it’s no wonder why so many people choose to book a sailing holiday. When it comes to your seafaring adventures, there are two main options for you to choose from: yacht charters or cruise ships. Not too sure what the main differences are? Take a look here.

You decide where you go

One of the main differences between a yacht charter and a cruise ship is the fact that you get to choose where you go when you charter a private yacht. Unlike in a cruise ship where the destinations and how long you spend there are predetermined, you get to go where you want when you charter a yacht . You’re not only a guest on the yacht, but remain in control of the daily itinerary including activities on and off-board.

Conversely, on a cruise ship, your ports of anchor, destinations, how long you get to spend exploring and even your daily activities are all predetermined by the company. Put simply, you have much less freedom to relax and go where the current may take you. However, if you prefer to travel with someone else making the decisions for you, then a cruise ship may be the better option.

First-class service

Another major difference between yacht charters and cruise ships is the fact that you can expect exceptional service upon a charter yacht. The crew have often been extensively trained to offer 5-star service and there is often much more staff than passengers. You can expect to be pampered each day by a knowledgeable crew which are a huge part of the experience of a charter yacht.

Alternatively, on a cruise ship, while the service will still be good, tour servers and hostesses will also be catering to the rest of the passengers. The ratio of crew to passengers is much lower, which means that personal service is a much less likely prospect.

Plenty of privacy

Finally, a key difference between cruise ships and charter yachts is the level of privacy you will be afforded. On a charter yacht, the only passengers are people who are a part of your party. This means that the entire yacht is yours to use and enjoy. If it’s a private vacation for yourself or your family you will be able to enjoy all the amenities such as the pool or spa pool in total privacy.

On a cruise ship, you’re obliged to share the ship’s facilities and amenities with the other passengers. Depending on the size of the cruise ship you may be hard-pressed to find any prolonged moments of privacy. Cruise ships tend to be incredibly social environments that are always busy with people and activities.

Cruise ships and charter yachts are both fantastic ways to spend some time out on the open ocean. Understanding the difference between a yacht cruise and a typical ocean cruise.

Roughly 20 years ago, Carol and I had a bad experience on what was billed as a luxury cruise ship and we vowed to never cruise again.  However, the cruise industry has made significant strides in the last two decades and we’ve completely changed our minds on that stance as we’ve sampled quite a few of the modern cruise offerings.

While the quality of a cruise experience has dramatically changed for the better over the years, in our view, another great benefit offered by the cruise industry is the great variety of cruise experiences that are currently available.

There are massive cruise liners available for those who are more budget minded, there are cruise lines that specifically target the luxury traveler, there are expedition cruise lines that offer travelers destinations like Antarctica and the Galapagos Islands; and there now also exists quite a number of cruise lines that feature much smaller mega-yachts.

Carol and I just finished a wonderful sailing on Windstar Cruises MSY Windsurf, which they bill as the world’s largest motor sailing yacht. I’ll be featuring a number of articles on our website over the coming weeks where I’ll share our experience sailing on the Windsurf, but I thought it might be helpful for our readers and clients to understand the difference between a yacht cruise and a more typical ocean cruise line.

Distinctions of a Yacht Cruise

• Yacht cruises tend to be more destination focused , and because of their smaller size, they are able to reach smaller ports that the larger cruise ships could never approach.  I shot the very top photograph at the main port on the island of St. Martin.  Besides the Windsurf, and the monster-ship docked next to us, there were also three other very large cruise ships in port.  It was a madhouse.  As an example of small ports with our much smaller sailing yacht, we were able to moor off a beautiful beach in Barbuda, hop aboard our tender to a small dock, and the locals whisked us away in small boats to a fabulous bird sanctuary to witness a massive colony of frigatebirds. That’s one of my photographs above.  Pretty cool.  Right? Our yacht was the only ship in sight. Most of the other Caribbean cruisers were off fighting crowds in Antigua.

• Generally speaking, with just a few exceptions, you won’t find stateroom balconies on a commercial yacht.  Depending on the size of your stateroom, you’re going to find two or more portholes configured and designed to give you what appears to be a large picture window in your stateroom. This gave me a little concern before our sailing.  However, we found such wonderful spaces aboard ship, we found that we primarily used our stateroom for sleeping and enjoyed the many nooks and crannies on the ship to relax, read a book, or catch a little sun.  Frankly, we didn’t miss having a balcony at all.
• For us, we found that our sailing yacht offered us a far more romantic and idyllic setting.  Because the ship is much smaller, it didn’t dominate the setting and allowed us to feel more immersed in our destinations.  We really enjoyed that.
• While yacht cruises certainly offer sailings in the open seas, you’re going to find that yacht cruising is generally done at night as you’re moving from one destination to another.  For example, most cruise lines sailing in the West Indies are leaving from Florida and that means 3-4 days at sea just to get to the islands and back. In our case, we flew into St. Martin, enjoyed a sunset sailing every night, and awoke to a different island each day.  We were 9-nights on the ship and we visited 9 different islands.  For us, we’d rather spend less time in the open seas and more time exploring different destinations.

Boat vs. Ship vs Yacht: What’s the Difference?

Language is a tricky thing, and picking out the differences between similar terms can be confusing. This is especially true when some of the definitions overlap. This is the case with the case of boat vs. ship vs. yacht . What’s the difference? We know in our gut that there are differences between these three seafaring vessels, but unless you’re a harbor master do you really know what counts as what?

Let’s get into some definitions, and we’re going to start with the easiest to explain: What is a yacht? What is a ship? And what is a boat?

Yacht vs. Ship vs. Boat

What is a yacht.

A yacht, I think everyone would agree, is fancier than a ship or a boat. “Yacht” infers some amount of luxury , and definitely recreation. There’s also something to be said about size. A yacht tends to be anywhere between 35 feet up to 160 feet. And some yachts, known as superyachts, go even beyond that. (Jeff Bezos just built a 417 foot yacht, but that’s really breaking yacht records.)

Because of the size, yachts tend to operate in larger bodies of water–generally the ocean. Yachts are able to handle rougher ocean waves, and they are also equipped with more advanced navigation and guidance instruments than smaller boats. Likewise, a yacht tends to have a full crew to help with the navigation, engineering, repairs, as well as having stewards that serve the yacht’s guests. This can be anywhere from a crew of four or five up to a crew of a few dozen on large yachts. 

One interesting thing to note is that outside of the United States, a yacht refers to a sailboat , and a motorized yacht is called a “motor yacht”. 

So, is a yacht a boat? Yes, technically a yacht is a boat. But a yacht is a very specific kind of boat.

What is a Ship?

The term ship is most commonly associated with a very large boat, and something that is not as fancy as a yacht (one exception is that cruise ships can still be very fancy, but are referred to as ships because of their size and power.)

Ships are generally so large that they would never be found in a lake, with some exceptions for the Great Lakes, and are made for navigating the high seas of the open ocean. An ship can refer to a cruise ship, a naval ship, a tanker, a container ship, and many other commercial vessels.

Ships tend to have advanced navigation and technology, but much more advanced than that of a yacht due to the size, the speed, and the routes that a ship will take. They are meant to be traversing the open ocean for very long periods of time, from one continent to the next, while a yacht may only rarely set across the ocean and most often stays somewhat near land. 

A ship will also have a much larger crew than a yacht or a boat. Ships are typically so large that they need not only one trained navigator but a set of navigators, plus an entire engineering team, and includes many more positions. 

Finally, a ship is meant to carry things. This may be passengers, yes (in reference to cruise ships and some navy ships) but most ships are for carrying cargo–or even carrying equipment to do work on other ships including repair work or refueling. 

What is a Boat?

Well, a boat is harder to define, because a yacht is technically a boat, and a ship is technically a boat. But when people refer to boats, they are almost always referring to something smaller than either a yacht or a ship. Boats may be motorized, like a speed boat, or they may sail, or they may be man-powered, like a rowboat or a kayak. Really, anything up to and including a liferaft, can be called a boat.

(As a side note that will just muddy the waters even further, submarine captains are adamant that their subs are boats. They are not ships.)

So, Boat vs. Ship Vs. Yacht?

Ultimately it comes down to this: all three of them are boats, but yachts are fancier, larger, and used for recreation, and ships are even larger, used commercially or by the navy, and are meant to cross oceans. The dividing line is sometimes thin, but generally speaking, when it comes to boats vs. ships.vs. yachts you can go by the adage “ I know it when I see it .”

A yacht and a cruise ship are both types of vessels that can be used for luxurious trips on the sea. While they both strive to provide a comfortable and enjoyable experience, there are significant differences between the two.

A yacht is typically much smaller than a cruise ship, usually ranging from 40 to 100 feet in length. Cruise ships, on the other hand, are massive sea-going vessels that can be up to 1,000 feet in length. The size difference has a big impact on the number of passengers and amenities each vessel can accommodate.

Passengers:

Yachts typically hold fewer than 20 passengers, while cruise ships can accommodate up to 4,000 or more. This means there are far more people and activities available on a cruise ship than on a yacht.

Activities:

Yachts tend to focus more on relaxation with activities like sunbathing, fishing, swimming and water sports. Cruise ships provide more variety with onboard entertainment such as shows and casinos as well as shore excursions at ports of call. Cruise ships also provide access to many different amenities such as spas, gyms and shopping.

Yachts tend to be much more expensive than cruise ships due to their size and amenities. This means that yachts typically cater to those who want privacy and luxury during their trip rather than large groups of people looking for an enjoyable experience. Cruise ships can be much more affordable, making them ideal for those looking for an exciting vacation with plenty of activities.

5 HUGE Differences Between a Ferry and a Cruise Ship (Real Examples)

If you are considering a cruise, you may be wondering if the ship will be similar to a ferry.

I’ve been on many cruises and have also taken trips on ferries. In this article, we will look at the differences between the two.

Many people wrongly assume that by taking a ferry trip, they’ll know what to expect from a cruise ship. This couldn’t be further from the truth in my experience!

What Is The Difference Between a Ferry and a Cruise Ship?

Ferries are small ships designed to transport people and cargo from one destination to the other.

Cruise ships are usually much larger than ferries, and they usually only transport passengers. Cruise ships are designed with leisure in mind and have many more onboard amenities than ferries.

Ferries usually only make short journeys, whereas cruise ships sail for weeks at a time. The purpose, ship design, onboard activities, and onboard experience all vary greatly.

Below are examples of a small ferry, a large ferry, a mid-sized cruise ship, and a large cruise ship.

#1 A Cruise Ship and a Ferry Have a Different Purpose

What is the purpose of a ferry.

The primary purpose of a ferry is to transport guests from A to B.

Ferries are primarily a mode of transport, and they often carry cargo, and some carry cars.

Ferries often provide a cheap alternative to other transportation methods, such as flying, and, as a result, are very popular in some places.

The Silja Symphony is a ferry that sails in the Baltic Sea. I took a sailing on her that ran between Stockholm, Sweden and Helsinki in Finland. It was incredibly cheap and a great way to travel.

The Silja Symphony ferry was the inspiration for some Royal Caribbean ships. I thought I should give her a try to see what Royal Caribbean had copied…

Ferry Examples:

One of the most popular ferry routes is the Staten Island Ferry in New York.

I have taken the journey on the Staten Island Ferry, and although it is very functional and provides great scenery, it’s far from a leisure activity.

The ferry carries 75,000 people PER DAY between Lower Manhattan and Staten Island.

Another very popular ferry route is the Star Ferry in Hong Kong.

I enjoyed this ferry trip more than the Staten Island ferry because we were able to sit outside with fresh air, but even still, it was very much a no-thrills ride.

What Is The Purpose Of A Cruise Ship?

The primary purpose of a cruise ship is to be a floating resort for the passengers onboard.

Cruise ships are full of cabins, restaurants, bars, entertainment venues, and swimming pools.

For many people, Me included, the idea of going on a cruise is as much about the ship as it is about the destinations visited.

Cruise Ship Examples:

The most popular cruise destination is the Caribbean. Guests from all over the world head to the Caribbean year-round to take a Caribbean cruise.

Most Caribbean cruises are upwards of 5 or so nights long and are generally pretty relaxed and fun.

Another very popular cruise destination is the Mediterranean. Mediterranean cruises sail year-round, and they are particularly popular as they can visit a number of countries within a week or so.

I’ve taken many Mediterranean cruises and usually visit around 5 countries in 7 nights.

To do a similar trip on land would be incredibly difficult, and expensive!

An example of a cruise I took in the Mediterranean where I was tempted never to get off the ship was a trip I took on Symphony of the Seas. There was so much to do onboard, there was no way I could see and do everything in a week.

What Is The Difference in Purpose?

Guests board cruise ships to enjoy the amenities of the cruise ship, whereas guests board ferries to get from A to B.

You can also transport things like cars and cargo on ferries, which cruise ships are not designed to do.

#2 Size & Ship Design

Generally speaking, ferries are much smaller than cruise ships and you’ll often find that they have a different design.

The design of the ferry varies dramatically. Some will be flat and low to the river/ocean, and others will look more similar to ocean cruise ships.

The Staten Island ferries are around 3000 gross tons. The largest cruise ship, Icon or the Seas, is over eight times as big at a gross tonnage of 248,663

Despite the difference in size, you’ll often find a similar amount of passengers onboard.

On cruise ships, guests have much more space per person as they need a cabin and places to eat and relax.

On ferries, guests are often just sat together and don’t need much room.

Ferries also don’t need anywhere near as many crew members onboard as cruise ships do.

A typical ratio on a cruise ship is one crew member to every three passengers. On the Staten Island Ferry, you’ll find 3000 guests with only fifteen crew members. That’s one crew member for every 200 passengers.

#3 Onboard Activities

What is there to do on a ferry.

On a ferry, your options are very limited. In most cases, for a short journey, you will just be sat down.

You may be able to look at the view, or if you’re in the middle – as I was on the Staten Island ferry – you may not be able to see anything!

On some larger ferries, you’ll find restaurants and bars. I’ve personally never felt the need to eat on a short ferry ride as I get too seasick.

Lots of ferries do provide free WiFi to pass the time but as most journeys are short there doesn’t need to be any entertainment onboard.

Taking a ferry is similar to taking a ride on a train but with a few added things on occasion, like video arcades or games rooms.

What Is There To Do On A Cruise Ship?

Cruise ships are filled with restaurants, bars, theatres, swimming pools, casinos, lounges, and much much more.

Onboard amenities do, of course, depend on the cruise line and ship, but almost all ships will have multiple bars, restaurants and entertainment venues.

On a cruise, you’ll find a daily schedule that is full of activities. On more lively, family-focused cruise lines, you’ll find things like Ropes Courses, Surf Simulators, and Zip Lines.

It’s often easier to think of a cruise ship as being a floating resort or city at sea. You’ll find everything that you would find in a small city on land – like shops, gyms, hairdressers and spas!

What Is The Difference In Onboard Activities?

There is a lot more to do on a cruise ship than on a ferry.

Entertainment is provided and there are numerous choices for how to spend a day on board.

Ferries are more functional than cruise ships, and although they may provide some bars and restaurants, the experience and quality are usually very limited.

#4 Movement

How much movement do you feel on a ferry.

If you are prone to travel sickness, you are much more likely to feel seasick on a ferry than on a cruise ship.

It’s common for people who don’t even suffer with seasickness to feel unwell on ferries, especially if eating or drinking too much!

I almost always take seasickness pills when taking a trip on a ferry. The exception to this would be where I am able to sit on the top deck and get some fresh air, this usually helps but I still wouldn’t want to do it for a prolonged period of time.

You’ll often feel vibrations and bumps and judders when taking a trip on a ferry.

Ferries are simply not designed for pleasure cruises; they are designed with a purpose in mind, and passenger comfort tends to come secondary to speed and efficiency.

What Movement Do You Feel on a Cruise Ship?

I am an incredibly seasick person. I get seasick on almost everything, but interestingly enough, I very rarely get seasick on cruise ships.

Due to the size, design, and stabilisers of the cruise ship, the movement that you’ll feel onboard is usually very small.

There are, of course, occasions where a ship may be caught in bad weather where the movement felt increases, but even still, this is very rare and doesn’t put me off of cruising.

#5 What’s Included In Your Fare?

The majority of ferry trips only last for a few minutes or a few hours. Cruises usually last for multiple days and can last weeks, even months!

This not only impacts the experience but also how much it’ll cost.

Realistically, for a cruise, you’re looking at at least $100 per night, but this includes your accommodation, meals, entertainment, and transport between destinations.

A ferry, on the other hand, is much cheaper, with a trip sometimes costing nothing at all. (the Staten Island ferry in New York is free.)

As a result, your fare only includes transportation from place to place. Any food bought onboard is at an extra cost.

Large Ferries

Some ferries are as large as small cruise ships and look very similar. These are definitely exceptions to the rule, but I think it’s interesting to see these ships.

Some ferries which look very similar to cruise ship are those from the Silja line. On board Silja ships, you’ll find restaurants, bars, shops, and even entertainment.

The cruises taken onboard are longer than you’d find on your average ferry, and as a result, the ship has cabins and is well-equipped for longer journeys.

Another ferry that is more similar to a cruise ship is the Havila Polaris – and her sister ships.

I took a winter trip down the coast of Norway on this state-of-the-art Norwegian ferry. It was silent – and battery powered! It had great food and drink and comfortable cabins onboard.

People could get on and off at every stop, and the ship went to small towns and ports along the coast that cruise ships don’t dock at.

Taking a trip on a ferry is a great way to get from A to B.

Ferries are usually basic ships with no added thrills onboard. Cruise ships, on the other hand, are destinations in themselves.

Taking a trip on a ferry is nothing like taking a cruise. If you’ve had a negative ferry experience in the past, don’t let this put you off cruising! It really is like comparing apples to oranges…

When Is a Ship a Yacht, and When Is It Not?

The difference between the two broad categories is determined by one key factor..

Yachts have been in the news a lot more frequently in recent years. There have been stories like when a Dutch yacht builder requested to temporarily dismantle an iconic bridge in Rotterdam to get a 417-foot-long sailing yacht commissioned by Jeff Bezos out to sea, or when authorities around the world seized the yachts of Russian oligarchs in the wake of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Usually, the most notable yachts have the prefixes super-, mega- and even giga- attached to convey their truly enormous sizes relative to most other privately-owned vessels.

As a result, ‘yacht’ as a term has basically become meaningless just by the sheer proliferation of private ships in recent years that defy all potential superlatives. It’s like when you say a word so often that it loses all its meaning. Why are there so many more huge luxury maritime vessels in the world? Rising levels of global wealth inequality? The only distinction between a yacht and a ship is simple: It is the vessel’s intended purpose. When you enter a foreign country, every customs agent will ask, “What is the purpose of your trip, business or pleasure?” It is the same when categorizing large water vehicles. The sole purpose of a yacht is recreation. If the craft has any other intended purpose, such as naval warfare or maritime commerce, it’s a ship. The U.S.S. Gerald R. Ford , a nuclear-powered U.S. Navy aircraft carrier, and the Carnival Celebration, a 5,280-passenger Carnival cruise ship , are both ships.

The plans for the Pangeos might feature private vacation villas and apartments. However, the absurd craft would also include also shopping malls and a hotel resort, making the Pangeos a ship. Besides ship and yacht, boat is another commonly used term. The definition of a boat is much more vague and open to interpretation. Boats tend to be small personal craft and only carry a few people. Though, it’s common for sailors to refer to vessels of any size or purpose as a boat.

What is the difference between crewing cruise ships and super yachts?

Cruise ships and super yachts are both large vessels that are staffed by crew members who make sure things are running smoothly.

Don't let that statement fool you, though—the experience of working on each vessel is quite different. In this article, we'll explore some key differences between working on a cruise ship and working on a super yacht.

Let's dive in!

Cruise Ships vs. Super Yachts: Specifications

The first thing to note is that cruise ships are generally much larger than super yachts. The average cruise ship is about 900 feet (ca. 274 meters) long, while the average super yacht is only about 150 feet (ca. 46 meters) long.

This difference in size means that there are also differences in the number of crew members. A typical cruise ship will have a crew of around 800 to 1,500 people, while a typical super yacht will have a crew of about 10 to 20 people.

Cruise Ships vs. Super Yachts: Work Hours

Another key difference between working on a cruise ship and working on a super yacht is the work hours. On a cruise ship, crew members typically work long hours—up to 10 hours per day—and will have they often have to work on weekends and holidays.

On a super yacht, crew members usually work around 8-10 hours per day, and they typically have more time off, dependant on the yacht’s itinerary. This difference is due in part to the fact that cruise ships carry more passengers and offer more amenities, including:

• restaurants
• live entertainment

On a super yacht, on the other hand, the focus is more on luxury and relaxation, so there can be fewer work hours.

Cruise Ships vs. Super Yachts: Work Environment

The work environment is another area where cruise ships and super yachts differ. On a cruise ship, the work environment is fast-paced. There are usually large numbers of passengers, and things do get busy.

On a super yacht, the work environment is typically more relaxed. There is often a higher crew to guest ratio, meaning there are more people to handle the workload. And the fact that there are fewer people in general makes for a quieter atmosphere.

That said, cruise ships typically offer their crew members dedicated crew areas for relaxation, while super yachts typically do not.

Cruise Ships vs. Super Yachts: Salaries

Finally, let's talk about salaries. Crew members on cruise ships typically earn less than crew members on super yachts.

This is due in part to the fact that super yacht owners are typically looking for crew members with exceptional maritime skills and experience. They are also willing to pay more for luxury and exclusivity.

Of course, salaries vary depending on the specific cruise ship or super yacht, so it's always best to do your research before applying for a job.

What Are the Requirements for Crew on a Cruise Ship or Super Yacht?

Now that we've gone over some key differences between working on a cruise ship and working on a super yacht, you might be wondering what requirements you need to meet in order to work on either one.

For the most part, there are very few formal requirements for entry level positions. You'll need:

• a valid passport
• a seafarers medical exam
• a STCW Basic Training certificate
• a firm grasp of the English language

However, these are the bare minimum requirements. If you're looking for a higher-level position, such as a management or officer mate position, you'll need additional experience and qualifications.

It's also important to note that most cruise lines and super yacht owners prefer to hire crew members who have experience working in customer service.

Finally, it's worth mentioning that many cruise lines and super yacht owners require their crew members to sign a contract. This contract can last for up to 6-8 months, and it can typically include a clause that requires you to pay back the cost of any training the company has paid, should you leave the job early.

How To Land a Job on a Cruise Ship or Super Yacht

If you're interested in working on a cruise ship or super yacht, the first thing you need to do is search online for job postings on our website.

2. Complete Your Application

Once you've found a job listing that interests you, the next step is to complete your application. Ensure that you have an up to date resume to submit as part of your application.

If there are any requirements that you don't meet (e.g., STCW Basic Training certification), you'll need to take care of those before you can complete this step. Luckily, there are plenty of maritime skills academies (such as the Maritime Skills Academy ) that can help you get up to speed.

3. Interview and Training

After you've submitted your application, the next step is an interview.

For cruise ship jobs, this will likely be a video interview with a hiring manager - but every cruise line is different. For super yacht jobs, the interview process is less systematic.

You might have an in-person meeting with the captain or owner of the yacht, followed by a trial period where you'll work as a deckhand or stewardess to see if you're a good fit for the job.
