2023 Fall Charter Yacht Show | Information from BVI yacht charter society

Our show dates for 2023 are  Tuesday November 7th to Friday November 10th (until noon) . Our host venue is  Nanny Cay Resort and Marina.

WHO CAN SIGN UP:  The show is open to ALL term charter crewed yachts regardless of one's home base.  You do not need to be CYS member to attend  , although members do enjoy year round benefits as well as a discounted show.

BOATS AND CREWS IN THE BVI:  Nanny Cay offers 10% off the dockage rate between November 1st and November 12th for CYS member show participants. Nanny Cay is able to confirm the allocation of 40 - 45 slips to the show. We will seek alternate accommodations if needed. See details below in General Information for Yachts on Docks.

BROKERS:  Nanny Cay offers brokers low season rates when booking accommodations for the show. Double occupancy ranges from $158.50 to $230.40. Reservations must be made direct at: [email protected]

VENDORS:  Our business expo affords captains, chefs and brokers the once a year opportunity to meet, in person, representatives of local businesses which offer quality products and services that ensure guests have the experience of a lifetime. Our expo typically features 30+ businesses and takes place the evening of the first show day, November 7th. See more below.

As the Sailing Capital of the World our waters remain azure blue and an average temperature of 80 degrees Fahrenheit. The trade winds blow predictably and steadily year round. In a world full of changes we assure you these are constants in the BVI.

BVI Charter Yacht Show, Tortola

Held in Nanny Cay Marina, Tortola in the British Virgin Islands, the Fall BVI Charter Yacht Show showcases not only the best of the crewed catamarans for charter in the British Virgin Islands for the coming season, but sailing and motor yachts as well. The team visits all of the yachts in the show, which compete to be awarded the top prizes for their categories, whether due to their size or the menus that the crew serve on board.

The Boatbookings team attends the BVI Charter Yacht Show to see all the charter yachts on display. This way we get to know the yachts, meet their crews and understand the experience that guests will receive on board. The yacht charter sector is continually evolving and it is great to see how the yachts and their crews continually step up to the challenge to exceed the expectations of their service.

BVI Charter Yacht Show Review November 2023

Kickstarting the Caribbean yachting season for this coming winter started with the BVI Charter Yacht Show 7-10 November 2023 held at Nanny Cay Marina, Tortola in the British Virgin Islands. Therefore, we would like to share our review with you to suggest some awesome yachts for your next sailing vacation in the BVI. Not only were the yachts magnificent but the crew were outstanding at this charter yacht show.

45 luxury yachts with professional crew attended the 4 day charter yacht show, and what a great show it was!  The grand finale was the Award Ceremony Dinner held on the beach at Nanny Cay Marina.  Here yachts were awarded for different competitions that were held throughout the show.  Best Designer Water Contest, Best Cocktail, Culinary Contest and Best Yachts in Show.

2022 BVI & USVI Fall Charter Yacht Shows: Winners Wow the Judges!

Several of our Ritzy Charters brokers recently attended the annual charter yacht shows in the Virgin Islands and reported that the shows were a huge success. The BVI show was held November 8-11 at Nanny Cay Resort & Marina, Tortola and the USVI Show followed November 12-15 at IGY Marina’s Yacht Haven Grande, St. Thomas.

The shows were the largest the industry has seen in recent years, and this year’s attendees were excited to see such a strong turnout. The BVI show featured nearly 30 yachts and in St. Thomas 70 participating yachts showed off their latest décor, new water toys, and other features.

Some of the most recent additions to the charter fleet featured in the show included:

An important aspect of these charter yacht shows is the opportunity for brokers to see firsthand these yachts that are available for charter here, interact with the crew, and sample the chef’s skills in the galley via a special invite lunch or dinner during the show. 

Our charter brokers attend several annual yacht shows to learn more about the yachts and crews that are available in specific destinations, as well as to build connections with industry partners as described in the Ritzy Charters: Your Best Choice Yacht Charter Broker  blog post.

In addition to the prestigious culinary competition, crews also compete for Best Cocktail, Best Crew, and the top award, Best in Show which considers the overall presentation and special details of the yacht along with the attitude and energy of the crew.

This year's schedule allowed time for a trip to Jost Van Dyke or for a lucky few, a sail to Anegada aboard Perfect Landing , two popular spots on a BVI itinerary. These were excellent trips for our brokers to familiarize themselves with the areas and gather useful information for clients.

Charter Yacht Show Tortola, the BVI, 7-10 November 2023

The Charter Yacht Show, Tortola, in the BVI marks the annual opening of the winter season in the Caribbean for the crewed yacht charter.

Crewed yachts, mostly catamarans, will gather in the Nanny Cay Marina on Tortola and open doors to the brokers and other industry players. We will spend few days visiting the yachts, talking to the crews, finding out how and why they might be the best charter option for our clients. We listen and learn about their experiences, we give suggestions, we take advices.

Networking within the industry is priceless during this time and those days. The BVI community always puts on a wonderful show, offering the local flavour in food, music and art. Local sponsors are generous in presenting their products and ideas. 

We always come back full of enthusiasm for this beautiful part of the Caribbean.

BVI CHARTER YACHT SOCIETY HOSTS 40TH ANNUAL FALL CHARTER YACHT SHOW

The BVI Yacht Charter Society hosted its 40 th  annual Fall Charter Yacht Show this past week at the Nanny Cay Resort and Marina on Tortola.

There our team met with Janet Oliver, the organizer of the event, who shared some background on the history and purpose of the activity.

Oliver explained that the event provides a unique opportunity for Charter companies in the BVI, many of which operate individually, to build a relationship with the Charter Yacht Brokers who attend.

In turn, the Brokers use the information gained at the event to share with potential customers – in hopes of finding the best charter option for their needs.

2021 Spring Charter Show

We couldn’t be prouder to announce the BVI currently has ZERO Covid cases. And almost all of our charter crews have had at least one of their two vaccinations. Yet, we recognize this is not the story for much of the world and certainly not where most of our brokers reside. For that reason our 2021 Spring Show – May 12th – 13th - will be a hybrid show this year. It will be a combination of real time and virtual at our host venue Nanny Cay Resort and Marina.

BOATS AND CREWS IN THE BVI: Nanny Cay is offering FREE dockage (utilities excepted) effective between 10th May - 14th May. See details below in General Information for Yachts on Docks

WHO CAN SIGN UP: The show is open to all term charter crewed yachts. You do not need to be CYS member to attend, although members do enjoy year round benefits as well as a discounted show. Be sure to check out the benefits.

VENDORS: We will be hosting a scaled down version of our traditional Vendor’s Night on Tuesday May 11th. Booth space will be available for businesses wanting to engage one on one with locally based crews. Those attending virtually will also be able to “visit” the booths, see the display and meet the staff. Stay tuned for more information.

As the Sailing Capital of the World our waters remain azure blue and an average temperature of 80 degrees fahrenheit. The trade winds blow predictably and steadily year round. So much has changed this year but our destination has not.

EVERYONE: Things are looking up. Charter guests are loving the BVI while the marine traffic is quiet and anchorages secluded. Want to secure your spot now before the rush? We are offering a 20% discount on the show fee if paid in full by April 1st. Registration is open!

How it will work…

Crews and their boats.

• Whether you are in the BVI or not, onboard your boat or not, you can be a part of the show.
• Once you are registered each crew will be given a time window in which their live stream or pre-recorded video will be aired. They will then be able to entertain live broker questions in a host led meeting. We will give you recommendations & helpful hints to create the optimum show reel, whether live or pre recorded, nearer the time.
• You will be given a link to access the “meeting room” where brokers will be congregating after your featured presentation. Brokers will engage with you and be given the opportunity to set up a one-on-one meeting at a later time.
• There will be side “events” which local & distant crews and brokers will be encouraged to attend and will create a boatshow feel despite the distance.

NOTE: Due to the nature of a virtual show registration for boats will have to close on 5th May.

• Registered brokers will be given a personal password to enter the inner sanctum of the dedicated event website
• Each boat will have a portal and a featured time slot for the release of their pre-recorded promo reel or their live stream.
• Live Q&A will be time restricted but lead by a Host to make the most of this arena.
• A contact form will be included at each portal enabling brokers to set up a subsequent one-on-one meeting with crews.
• There will be side “events” which will create a boatshow feel despite the distance

New Brokers: In order, to get the most out of the charter yacht show we recommend ALL new brokers complete the New Broker Online Course  presented by CYBA (Charter Yacht Broker Association).

The course is designed to give you a thorough knowledge of the yacht charter business, and provide a resource for you to refer back to for guidance as your career evolves.” Are you former, or soon to be former, crew ? Many of the same have completed the course ahead of you and admit they learnt much more than they thought they would.

REDUCE, REUSE, RECYCLE: regardless of the location of our show, our environmental consciousness remains the same. We discourage the distribution of disposable water bottles at our shows. We will be partnering with Green VI to ensure all parts of our show are conducted with sustainability in mind.

As a non-profit organization we try to minimize extra fees wherever possible therefore we prefer payment by cheque, especially from CYS members. Of course, where necessary we will accept credit cards (VISA/MASTERCARD). Brokers can request a PayPal Invoice.

Vendor Registration

We will be hosting a scaled down version of our traditional Vendor's Expo on the evening of the 11th. Located under the Peg Leg tents, we will make space available for companies desiring a physical presence. BYOT (Bring your own table). $100 will buy you space for an 8' table. All social distancing and mask wearing protocols will be respected.

• Make yourselves known at the Registration desk.
• Never interrupt crews engaging with brokers.
• Never board a boat unless you have been invited.

Our review of the BVI Charter Show Winners 2022. Ms. Janet Oliver of the BVI Charter Yacht Society organized this event. Check out the winners in the different Categories.

Hurricanes, pandemics, or recessions have not deterred the Charter Yacht Society of the BVI from hosting its annual November BVI Charter Yacht Show for the past 40 years. 

The 3–4-day event enables each yacht to be showcased in their operation to an international sales force of charter brokers.  The show unites all critical players in the industry – the sales force, the product, and the landside services, which are vital to the smooth running of the yacht charter industry. 

Importance of the BVI Charter Show

Charter companies attend boat shows worldwide to promote their brand and then their most recent vessel.  On the other hand, independent crewed charter yachts are not identified by a company brand but by their individual and unique qualities. Even “like” yachts vary vastly depending on décor, yacht, crew, and amenities aboard.

As the yachts have evolved in size and shape, the show venue has changed, but that which has remained the same is the idyllic destination and the quality vacation product, whether speaking of the luxurious vessels or the professional yet amiable crews. 

Despite the advent of the World Wide Web, with so much information accessible, no amount of online research can equal the experience of visiting the destination, meeting crews in person, and seeing a yacht with one’s own eyes.  Charter yacht shows will live on even as technology progresses.

The BVI Charter Show Winners 2022 event ended. Then, we departed for St. Thomas for the annual VIPCA 2022 show at Yacht Haven Grand Marina.

The 2021 Charter Yacht Society Boat Show announced its winners at Nanny Cay Resort and Marina in Tortola on November 3-6. This popular event hailed the BVI Charter show winners who participated in yacht inspections, themed cooking competitions, and seminars.

Although only 9 yachts attended physically this year, another 7 yachts and their crews attended virtually. Over 100 charter brokers attended the show. The charter show winners are great choices for your next BVI or Caribbean catamaran charter vacation.

The BVI Charter Show, a yearly event in the Caribbean, featured fancy yachts and experts in the maritime world. It is also the perfect stage for companies to show off their best boats and services to people who love yachts.

BVI Charter Show Winners | Cocktails and Canapes Competition

The cocktail and canapé competition added a flavorful twist to the celebration. It showcased the mixology prowess of equally talented charter yacht crews. Here are the BVI Charter show winners under the category:

• Tara Phelan, of the 62-foot Privilege sailing catamara n ELYSIUM, won best canape. The runner-up place went to crew Lee and Tyler worked together for many years. Presently, they have embarked upon the Catamaran SEGUNDO VIENTO.
• Meanwhile, Captain Graham Gips from 44-foot Fountaine Pajot ALLENDE took home first place for best cocktail. Captain Jeff Nichols from 58-foot Fountaine Pajot PORT TO VINO was runner-up.
• The BVI Show also hailed ELYSIUM. They discovered their captain chef Tara Phelan and Captain Matt Mullins as The Best Cocktail and Canape Team award. Their captain and chef teamwork shined throughout the competition.

BVI Yacht Show: Best In Show

• SEGUNDO VIENTO received first place for the yachts, and ALLENDE was runner-up. Moreover, SEGUNDO VIENTO is a brand new privilege 64 BVI sailing catamaran. It comprises crew Lee and Tyler Dawson, who manage the luxurious yacht.

• Lastly, the Addison SHARE OUR WORLD Award went to Captain Graham and Chef Kristiann Gips of BVI Catamaran ALLENDE.

The beautiful setting of the Caribbean will play host for the 36th edition of this magnificent yachting event. A fleet of about 75 charter yachts will arrive on Nanny Cay Resort and Marina in Tortola for four days. Most of our BVI charters start in Tortola. Nevertheless, it’s possible to start a crewed charter in Saint Thomas in the US Virgin Islands. Not all yachts are able to start the charter in the USVI. You’ll either want a yacht that is based in the USVI or we can arrange a St. Thomas pickup (with many yachts).

Types of Charters

There are two primary ways to break down our BVI yacht charters: Firstly, by how they are powered (this includes sails and motor) and secondly, by how many crew members are onboard (this can be none, captain only, or full crew).

Type of Yacht

☛ Sailing Yachts

Sailing yachts come in two primary types: monohulls and catamarans. Monohulls have a single hull, offering a traditional sailing experience with heeling and excellent upwind performance. Catamarans, with twin hulls, provide stability, speed, and spacious living areas. Monohulls excel upwind, while catamarans offer comfort, speed, and shallow draft advantages. Ultimately, the choice between them depends on individual preferences, sailing conditions, and intended use.

☛ Motor Yachts

Motor yachts and motor catamarans are power-driven vessels offering distinct advantages. Motor yachts provide luxury, speed, and long-range cruising, while motor catamarans offer stability, spaciousness, and fuel efficiency. If you are planning a busy itinerary with a focus on exploring the many great destinations, you should strongly consider a Motor Yacht.

☛ Luxury Yachts

While the British Virgin Islands have traditionally been known as sailing destinations, we have seen a growing demand for luxury motor yachts among high-end clients. As the marinas compete to accommodate more and larger vessels, their numbers increase.  There are now over 200 large   (100+ feet meters) motor yachts operating in the BVI  in the high season. The motor yachts offer more privacy and prestige, more water toys, and comfort as they can accommodate a larger number of guests and crew. (Note that jet skis are not allowed in the BVI).

☛ Crewed Charters

Immerse yourself in luxury and choose a crewed charter where everything is taken care of, and you won’t need to think about a thing. A Crewed Charter usually includes at least a Captain and a Chef but can also cover a stewardess, masseuses, dive instructors, personal trainers, and yoga instructors. The boat is provisioned according to guest wishes and preferences. Since all the work is handled by the crew, the guests can really have a relaxed, laid-back time.

☛ Captain-Only Charters

Captain-only charters are a good middle ground between the crewed charters and the bareboat charters. It’s very much like car rental. You do the paperwork and rent the boat. The local experience of the crew should not be underestimated. A captain will know secret spots and is able to quickly analyze your preferences and types of vacation you wish (or need).

☛ Bareboat Charters

Bareboat charter is the budget-friendly option for qualified sailors. Originally intended for people who know the area, the price convenience caused that today, many of the bareboat captains would be better off with a captain-only charter. If you haven’t been to the BVI before or you haven’t that much experience sailing the boat you wish to charter (rent), consider a captain-only charter, you will thank us later:) At the moment, we don’t include bareboats in our search, please inquire directly and we can find a matching bareboat for you.

Common Issues On a BVI Yacht Charters

• I got a boat from USVI – will I find out, after I sign the contract, that we’ll not go to the BVI at all?
• All-Inclusive – what does it include?
• Air Conditioning – does it run during the night?
• APA- Advance Provisioning Allowance – are you going to have a daily overview?
• Crew – what is the real crew feedback? How did they do on their last charters?
• Crew Change – is your crew a part of the contract?

• are your cruising taxes included?
• how long is your immigration procedure going to take? Minutes or hours?
• will I lose a day in order to catch a Ferry to get an STT morning flight?

List of BVI charter companies

Most people would start with 50 islands and cays, right? Let’s start with the relaxed and chilled atmosphere where liming was invented (drinking/eating and chilling for hours without a defined schedule). It’s the freedom that you can have when sail to bars like Willy T, the optimism and positive energy that you recuperate over the course of your vacation, that’s what makes the BVI special.

You can immediately tell the people who arrived yesterday. Full of stress, solving small things… a bundle of nerves that we turn into after prolonged experience with the “real world.” After a few painkillers (the BVI signature drink) or Frozen Margaritas (Willy T is the place), every pain diminishes and the problems fade away. These same people leave after a week smiling, optimistic and full of energy.

The Baths on Virgin Gorda

A place where you must charter is The Baths. This spectacular place will enchant you and you will fall in love with the Baths. What is so special about this place that you have to charter there? The answer is simple: there are few places on earth that are quite so stunningly beautiful and this part of Virgin Gorda is among them. Big rocks settled in the silky soft sand are breathtaking and once you climb through them you will finish in Devils Bay.

Tortola is the largest island in the BVI and home to the capital where your charter most likely will start. The locals are welcoming and the island is home to numerous stunning white sand beaches like Smuggler’s Cove, Trunk Bay, and Cane Garden Bay, perfect for relaxing with a cold drink.

Nanny Cay is located on the south side of Tortola and is home to the modern Nanny Cay Resort & Marina, known for its great drinks and breathtaking sunsets. The area also hosts the renowned Spring BVI Regatta, attracting sailors from around the world.

Soper’s Hole Wharf & Marina , located on the West End of Tortola, is a charming spot for dining, refueling, and shopping, offering a peaceful atmosphere. This part of the British Virgin Islands truly feels like paradise, brimming with the sunny island’s vibrant energy and natural wonders.

One of the main islands is very well known for yacht anchorages. On Jost Van Dyke will find amazing bars, restaurants with the pure Caribbean vibe. Once you come on your yacht charter to White Bay you will not want to leave ever. In the White Bay, the time stopped and you will have so much fun on your charter. Cold famous painkillers with delicious local food, you have to try this little nature secret in this paradise. Make sure to visit the famous Soggy Dollar Bar!!

Norman Island is known as Treasure Island and was the inspiration for the pirate novel of Robert Louis Stevenson. This island is the perfect place where to sail on your yacht charter if you are looking for adventure which may end with found treasure. After snorkeling and exploring the many caves that Norman Island offers, you can sail to Bight for outstanding food in Pirates Bight Restaurant and The Club Restaurant.

Sandy Cay & Spit Island

Sandy Cay and Spit Island, both tiny uninhabited islands near Jost Van Dyke, offers palm-lined shores and shallow reefs ideal for beachcombing and exploring marine life. Both destinations provide secluded beauty and relaxation, making them must-visit spots during a yacht charter in the British Virgin Islands.

The Indians

The Indians is a natural wonder and a must-visit destination for anyone on a yacht charter, offering a blend of natural beauty and  snorkeling opportunities . This cluster of rugged islets features  striking rock formations  shaped by the elements. The main attraction is the submerged boulders, known as  “The Caves,”  providing a captivating underwater landscape.

Accessible by yacht , anchoring in the vicinity opens the door to an immersive experience. Snorkelers can explore  vibrant coral reefs  and encounter  diverse marine life  thriving in the crystal-clear waters.

North Sound

If the BVI is the mecca of yachting, the North Sound should be its capital.

North Sound is located on the north of Virgin Gorda, the primary method of transport there is by boat. It’s a rather secluded location, no doubt by design.

This  Billionaire Playground first became popular in the 50s and 60s, thanks to the Washburn family, and gained even more attention in the 70s and 80s. Notably, Sir Richard Branson bought his second island, Moskito Island, here.

North Sound is a hub for sailing, hosting the annual Loro Piana Superyacht Regatta and Rendezvous. You can also see people windsurfing and kitesurfing here. Plus, some of the best BVI diving locations , like Mountain Point, Cow’s Mouth, and Paul’s Grotto near Mountain Bay, are found in this area. It’s a playground for the wealthy but also a paradise for anyone who loves the sea and adventure.
