The Shadow-Caster Guide to Underwater Lighting

Importance of underwater lights for boats.

Underwater lights are more than just a visual enhancement for your boat. They serve several important purposes that can greatly enhance your boating experience. One of the primary benefits of underwater lights is improved visibility underwater. When you’re out on the water, it’s essential to be able to see any potential hazards that may be lurking beneath the surface. Whether it’s rocks, debris, or other submerged objects, underwater lights illuminate the water, allowing you to navigate safely.

Another significant advantage of underwater lights is their ability to attract fish. If you’re an avid angler, you know that fishing at night can be a rewarding experience. However, without proper lighting, it can be challenging to attract fish to your boat. Underwater lights create a vibrant glow that fish are naturally drawn to, increasing your chances of a successful fishing trip. So not only do these lights enhance the aesthetics of your boat, but they also improve your fishing game.

Additionally, underwater lights create a mesmerizing visual effect that adds a touch of elegance to your boat. Whether you’re hosting a party on board or simply enjoying an evening cruise, the soft glow of underwater lights creates a tranquil and inviting atmosphere. It sets your boat apart from others and makes a statement on the water.

  • Test the lights: Before finalizing the installation, test the lights to ensure they are functioning correctly. Check for any loose connections or issues with the wiring.

Just purchased The AL240 color changers. Aqualights did the initial set up. Steve has been extremely responsive and helpful in answering questions, ordering options and helping configure the lights  to my exact specifications. They are easy to work with and willing to help.

 - robert king  - , testimonials.

The products and customer service from Aqua Lights are first rate. I worked with Stephen, we must have talked 20 times, he was never agitated at the amount of time required to spend with me. I bought dock lighting and Stephen wanted to make sure I got exactly what I wanted - problem was I had no idea what I wanted. When all was said and done, what I got was exactly what I wanted. True top marine quality and beautiful. So much so that after the install, when I saw what the lights looked like I bought additional lights, more then doubling my original order. You will not get anything remotely close to this quality from China.

My experience with Aqua Lights was on a very professional level. I was given the technical information I needed to make the decisions as the size and power of the lights. I received my shipment as requested and always like doing business with an American Company.

Unless you’re Rose from The Titanic or Actress Natalie Wood, who’s famously aquaphobic, it’s hard to deny the sheer joy boats bring.

They transcend mere transportation, offering an escape from the mundane and a chance to embark on thrilling adventures across the vast ocean space.

Naturally, you want to make the most out of these voyages, and what better way than with a mesmerizing setup of underwater boat lights ?

Whether you’re looking for style or functionality, you’ll love the extensive selection of top brands at Apex Lighting including Aqualuma, Lumitec, Bluefin LED, and OceanLED. And while you’re exploring their unique benefits, you’ll also learn:

  • How a polymer construction makes the Aqualuma brand truly reliable
  • The exciting possibilities of Lumitec’s versatile boat lights
  • The ambiance-setting ability of stylish Bluefin LED lights
  • How a titanium coating makes OceanLED one of the premium brands for your vessel

1 - The Reliable Aqualuma

Aqualuma 6 Series LED Underwater Light (GEN 4)

With their modern designs and high-quality construction , Aqualuma's underwater LED lights bring a touch of luxury and reliability to any vessel.

Take the Aqualuma 6 Series LED Underwater Light (GEN 4) , for instance, with its polymer housing that combines perfectly with elegant 770-lumen fixtures.

This design creates a scenic illumination aboard your vessel, “S.S. AquaHolic,” while ensuring resilience against corrosive saltwater and rust, and discoloring UV radiation.

So, it’s no wonder that Apex Lighting offers a six-year housing warranty for the Aqualuma 6 Series LED Underwater Light (GEN 4) plus a three-year guarantee for the internal components.

But that’s not all. Aqualuma lights are also energy efficient and easy to install .

The Aqualuma 12 Series LED Underwater Light (GEN 4) is an excellent demonstration of these qualities.

It consumes two amperes per light from a 12-volt DC battery to produce 1,525 lumens . This is far less than traditional incandescent lights of the same 1,525-lumen illumination.

The fixture also comes with a straightforward two-wire installation that requires no special tools or electrical experience to set up.

This hassle-free approach ensures your mind and efforts remain solely on enjoying your boating adventure and creating wonderful memories with your loved ones.

So, if you’re looking for reliability , efficiency , and style , you can’t go wrong with Aqualuma, and the best place to find them is right here at Apex Lighting.

Important Note: While Aqualuma lights are known for their resilience against saltwater and UV radiation, it's still critical to conduct regular maintenance to ensure longevity.

You’ll find plenty of models from this impressive brand, including the popular Aqualuma 18 Series LED Underwater Light (GEN 4) . These lights feature a dazzling 2,150 lumens with only 2.6 amps per light in consumption from a 12-volt DC battery.

This intense illumination ability is enough to transform any underwater surface into a stunning spectacle of vibrant marine life and a source of exciting memories.

The table below shows other underwater light models under the Aqualuma brand. Visit the collection page for more details.

2 - The Versatile Lumitec

Lumitec SeaBlaze X2 LED Underwater Light

Care for an LED-powered nighttime fishing adventure with your favorite vessel, “The Knotorious?”

How about an easy evening hangout in your transom area with a spectacular display of color-changing illumination painting the ocean surface?

This is the kind of versatility Lumitec offers and the reason for its top-brand status for all your boat lighting needs.

You’ll find functionality with powerful underwater lights such as the SeaBlaze Typhoon Thru-Hull Underwater and aesthetics with vibrant ambiance-setting fixtures like the Javelin 600X LED Underwater Light .

Lumitec’s SeaBlaze Typhoon Thru-Hull delivers an impressive 10,000 measured lumen , making it one of the most powerful and functional underwater boat fixtures at Apex Lighting.

This is plenty of illumination to reveal buoys, channel markers, and small vessels, preventing collisions, especially when docking during low-visibility conditions such as rain and fog.

But what's more fascinating about the SeaBlaze Thru-Hull is that for all its brightness, the fixture takes up only 60 watts of energy , which is less than a standard color TV of 150 watts .

This efficiency enables prolonged usage via 10 and 4 Amp-draw (for a 12 and 24-volt battery), without worrying about running out of juice.

The video below highlights the features of the Seablaze Typhoon Thru-Hull Underwater.

For aesthetic lighting, Lumitec delivers with the Javelin 600X LED Underwater Light . It features a vibrant 6,000-lumenfull color-changing bulb that’s perfect for creating an enchanting ambiance around your boat.

However, vibrant color-changing is just half the story. This fixture also delivers excellent color quality with its exceptional Color Rendering Index (CRI) of over 70 out of a maximum of 100.

This is a measure of how accurately and vividly the fixture reproduces color relative to a reference light source, which is critical in creating different color profiles to set the right mood.

For instance, picture your transom area with an enchanting blue glow from the over 70 CRI and 6000-lumen Javelin 600X bathing the surrounding water. It’s a relaxing and inviting atmosphere that makes for an unforgettable boating experience.

The video below highlights more features of the Lumitec Javelin 600X LED Underwater Light.

Explore more of Lumitec’s versatility with the extensive collection at Apex Lighting . You’ll find 12V, 24V, 110V, and 220V models to suit all your marine applications, whether you're sprucing up your cabin and deck or enhancing safety within your entire vessel with sufficient illumination.

Why This Matters: With Lumitec, you get the ability to customize your marine lighting based on your unique requirements, creating a vessel that truly reflects your personality and enhances your marine experience.

3 - The Stylish Bluefin LED

BluefinLED Piranha P6 LED Color Changing

Bluefin LED has established a solid reputation for stylish light designs with full-color choices to help you set the mood for your boat.

Whether you’re looking for a chilled-out blue ambiance or a romantic red atmosphere, trust this brand to deliver with elegant models such as the Piranha P6 LED Color Changing .

2,700 lumens of interchangeable red, green, blue, and white will transform your hull and transom area into a dazzling display of vibrant hues and style . The kind that makes for a memorable night adventure under the star-lit sky.

Here’s a quick video showing the color-changing feature of the BluefinLED Piranha P6 LED Color Changing.

And then there’s the shelf life. An impressive 50,000 hours or more than five years helps you keep the magic alive and your mind away from frequent replacement and maintenance expenses.

“I've had three of these lights on my boat for over two years. I've been very pleased with them and with the service and support I've received from the folks at Bluefin... I recommend Bluefin to anyone looking for underwater lighting for their boat.” — Michael C., Verified Buyer

Beyond style, the Bluefin LED brand is all about safety . It’s a critical aspect considering the proximity of water and electricity, which is why the Piranha P6 LED Color Changing features over-voltage, polarity, and thermal protection.

These features protect you and your guests from the possible hazards of voltage spikes, overheating, and circuit shorts, ensuring your night remains festive and full of pleasant memories.

Meanwhile, the lights also feature a sturdy polymer lens and a Guard X protective coating to prevent marine growth buildup. Both attributes keep the lights in  mint condition allowing safe and reliable operation at all times.

Marine growth on your lights would otherwise weaken the housing and lead to cracks and breaks. This would then provide an opening for destructive elements such as liquids, moisture, and dust.

4 - The Premium OceanLED

OceanLED Explore E3 E6

As a premium brand, Ocean LED offers some of the best products in marine lighting with plenty of features that transform your vessel into a captivating spectacle.

Take the OceanLED 3010XFM HD GEN2 as an example, 11,000 lumens and wide 60 ˚ / 20 ˚ beam angles create an exceptionally bright scene around your vessel. The sort of view that leaves a lasting impression on anyone who gazes.

But there’s more. These lights are encased in a sturdy aluminum bronze AB2 bezel housing , specifically designed to withstand the corrosion and UV radiation of marine environments.

These nifty features make the OceanLED brand among the favorites at Apex Lighting, which is why they offer plenty of models to suit your specific needs. These include the OceanLED E3 & E6 Series Thru-Hull Underwater Light .

The lights feature a unique fish-strobe mode for your nighttime fishing expeditions . In this mode, the lights emit a randomized pulsating light pattern, creating an enticing visual display that attracts nearby fish to your vessel.

Meanwhile, their small current draw of 7.8 A for the E6 and 5.5 A for the E3 means you can keep the strobe running for as long as necessary without worrying about running out of juice. You won’t even have to worry about start-up surges, which is common with larger current draws.

As for their housing, Ocean LED E3 & E6 Series feature an interesting titanium coating that prevents the attachment of marine organisms, such as barnacles, algae, and other forms of biofouling.

This saves you hours of scrubbing each time you use them and keeps your lights in perfect working order for a longer useful life.

“I'm all about them. This one is perfect, brighter than most, and coming in at 4200 lumens the 10,000 lumens is more than double the cost of this one. I highly recommend this model.” —  Ctsearay, Verified Buyer

Choosing The Best Performing Marine Underwater Lights

With underwater led lights, your boating day can be extended into the night with endless fishing, swimming and cocktails for late-night entertainment. Though installing underwater LED lights on your boat may be a simple affair if you are handy, choosing from the wide variety of these lights online or at brick and mortar shops may be quite tricky if you are not familiar with the ever changing models. Atlantic Marine has done all the work for you, letting our years of experience in marine installations and service provide the best products: Saving you time and money on only the highest quality underwater lighting.

Useful tips that can help you in buying LED underwater lights:

Stick With Reputable Manufacturers

Atlantic Marine Electrical Services sells quality products that we use in our own installations. Contact us so that we can recommend the best fixture for you when browsing . Dealer recommended LED lights have good track records with minimal to no malfunctions. High grade LED underwater lights have longer replacement guarantees.

Though some LED lights come with user instructions for installation, it would be best to call in the services of our experts to make sure installation goes trouble free.

Determine your budget.

Buying lights is often mistaken as a luxury, especially underwater led lights . Luckily, underwater lights are offered by various manufacturers at a wide range of price points. Some LED light models have a somewhat shorter lifespan and less rugged housing than others which will make them slightly less expensive, but all the lights offered are of good quality. Night yachting activities like fishing may require fixtures with higher lumens that are more expensive, but generally at all of the price points you can find effective led fishing lights.

Consider installation requirements

LED underwater lights with surface mount installation will facilitate an easier installation than those that are thru-hull . Lights with surface mount installation only require a few holes for screw attachment and one small hole that will allow the wiring process. Underwater lights with surface-mount installation eliminate the need of cutting large hull holes which is time consuming and may increase risk of damage to the hull.

I have anywhere from 2 to 10 snook, redfish, trout, and other species at my light nightly. I can not tell you how much it enhances my dock!!

We purchase a mega watt light at the Miami boat show & we love it !!!!! blue was the color we picked!

I have tried other underwater lights that claim to be the “brightest” and the “best”, only to find out that I had wasted my money and my time. Then I heard about the incredible underwater lights. I decided to try the white light. The incredible light was much brighter than the previous lights I had tried. After seeing my light, my neighbor purchased a green one. My family and I liked the look of the green light and all of the fish that it attracted, so we added a green one to go with our white one. Now we have our own aquarium at our dock every night.

The Mega Watt light I purchased this summer has been absolutely incredible! I love the color (blue), it’s very pretty! Late at night, we go out to our dock and watch sooo many fish that we’d never seen before swim right by us… Our five year old son loves it and now says he wants to be a marine biologist when he grows up! Too funny! It never gets old! Thanks IULighting!

The underwater “mega-watt” lighting system is amazing! It transformed an average boat dock into a work of art!

Larry Zollo

Just installed our light yesterday and could not believe how large of a circumference the light covers and how brilliant the light is. The fish were swarming all over our dock in a matter of minutes. I would highly recommend this product.

The light is terrific. I purchased the blue light due to our proximity to the inlet. It makes our backyard look like a swimming pool. And the support i received was unbelievable. They answered questions, offered some great advice, and provided detailed installation and maintenance instructions (via email, phone, and in the box). I will be purchasing more of these. Thank you

Incredible Underwater LED Lighting truly lives up to their name. Actually they might consider changing their name to “Unbelievably Gorgeous Underwater LED Lighting”. I am the envy of my neighborhood where people actually stop at night to not only admire “the glow” but also to watch the show as the lights attract so many fish. Who needs an aquarium when you have Incredible Underwater LED Lighting in your backyard!!!!!! Thanks guys… a fantastic product… I’m your biggest fan!!!!!

Marine Corps is reviving a light attack helicopter unit it cut in 2022

yacht underwater lights

In November 2022, Marines from a North Carolina helicopter squadron flew their AH-1Z Vipers and UH-1Y Venoms together for what was supposed to be the last time.

A Marine in one helicopter marked the occasion by making the “rock and roll” hand gesture as the aircraft neared the ground, according to video of the final flight.

The next month, Marines from Marine Light Attack Helicopter Squadron 269, known as the “Gunrunners,” officially cased the unit’s colors in a ceremony aboard Marine Corps Air Station New River, North Carolina.

But less than two years after the squadron was deactivated as part of an overhaul of the Marine Corps, it will get reactivated.

“Through the Force Design Campaign of Learning, the Service continually seeks validation of previous assumptions to ensure the [Fleet Marine Force] is effective, lethal, and combat-ready,” Marine spokesman Maj. Eric Flanagan said in an emailed statement to Marine Corps Times on March 14.

Marine light attack helicopter squadrons, commonly known as HMLAs, would prove useful in crisis-response missions and maritime conflicts with peer adversaries alike, said Flanagan, who noted the “persistent demand” for the squadrons’ capabilities.

The Viper, which can support troops on the ground by firing at targets in the air and on the ground, and the Venom, which can perform a wide range of missions , are both Bell-made helicopters and part of the same family of aircraft, according to Naval Air Systems Command.

Marine Light Attack Helicopter Squadron 269 will get reactivated in July, according to Flanagan.

The December 2022 deactivation took place as part of Force Design 2030, the Corps’ plan for modernizing to meet the threat of technologically sophisticated adversaries like the Chinese military. As part of the plan, the service has gotten rid of some units and assets to free up money for other capabilities.

In the initial 2020 document laying out Force Design 2030, then-Commandant Gen. David Berger called for the Marine Corps to cut at least two of its seven light attack helicopter squadrons.

“While this capability has a certain amount of relevance to crisis and contingency missions which we must still be prepared to execute, it is operationally unsuitable for our highest-priority maritime challenges and excess to our needs with the divestment of three infantry battalions,” Berger wrote.

The deactivation of the squadron “was based on planning assumptions which have since been further refined through the campaign of learning,” Flanagan said.

When the squadron was deactivated, its Marines rotated to other units, and its helicopters and equipment were moved to preservation sites in the United States “to maintain a flexible ready bench for the Service and preserve the ability to make future adjustments,” according to Flanagan.

The California-based Marine Light Attack Helicopter Squadron 469 also was deactivated in December 2022.

The deactivations left five light attack helicopter squadrons in the active component, according to Flanagan: Marine Light Attack Helicopter Squadrons 169, 267, 367 and 369 under the California-based 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing, and just Marine Light Attack Helicopter Squadron 167 under the North Carolina-based 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing.

The active component also has a squadron for training Venom and Viper pilots, and the Reserve has two light attack helicopter squadrons, Flanagan said.

Retired Master Gunnery Sgt. Lawrence F. Reeve Jr., who was serving with the Gunrunners as a maintenance chief when it was deactivated, said he had an inkling even in 2022 that the deactivation wouldn’t last. It was clear that the lone East-Coast-based light attack helicopter squadron ― Marine Light Attack Helicopter Squadron 167 ― wasn’t going to be enough to support the Corps’ needs.

“It was tough to see,” Reeve said of the Gunrunners’ deactivation.

When the Corps revives the unit, the helicopters will be brought back to operation from the sites where they had been preserved since the deactivation, according to Flanagan.

The squadron will be formed with “a significant contingent” of Marines who had been part of the Gunrunners in the past, according to Flanagan. The rest of the squadron’s people will come through the normal staffing processes.

For Reeve, the reactivation of the unit where he spent much of his time in the Corps comes as good news.

Combat has evolved, but Marines on the ground still benefit from having the light attack helicopters supporting them from above, he said.

The retired master gunnery sergeant arrived at Marine Light Attack Helicopter Squadron 269 as a lance corporal in 1994, returned to the squadron for long chunks of his career, deployed to Iraq with the squadron five times and held his retirement ceremony in 2023 from the squadron’s hangar.

In his home in Michigan, he has a host of squadron photos, patches and coins, as well as the tail-rotor blade he received as a gift in 2001 when he departed the unit for recruiting duty, he said.

“The pride of being a Gunrunner was always there,” Reeve said. “I always wanted to be a Gunrunner and never wanted to be anything other than a Gunrunner.”

Dungeness crab monitoring internship – apply by March 20th

Want to gain field experience while helping to answer important questions for Dungeness crab management?

Introduction

The Pacific Northwest Crab Research Group (PCRG) is a diverse group of researchers including state and tribal co-managers, federal agencies, academics, and non-profit organizations. Formed in 2018, the PCRG seeks to address multiple critical data gaps to promote and support the sustainable management and harvest of Dungeness crab ( https://www.pnwcrab.com ). A top research priority of the group is to monitor abundance of larval crab (zoeae and megalopae) in Puget Sound waters using light traps. A light trap is a water bottle with funnels on the side, a buoyant lid, and a light in the center that turns on at sunset and off at sunrise. Larval crab exhibit positive phototaxis, meaning they are attracted to light. We can take advantage of this behavior with these traps, which are especially effective at capturing megalopae, the final larval stage of these crab. By counting and measuring megalopae captured in the trap, we can evaluate recruitment of Dungeness crab.  Additionally, we monitor local beaches to evaluate potential bottlenecks as these larval forms transition to the juvenile stage.

  • Regularly monitor a light trap at a station in Shilshole Bay marina
  • Count larval crabs and other organisms
  • Measure the size of the megalope
  • Observe patterns in light trap catch relative to ocean and atmospheric conditions
  • Participate in bimonthly beach surveys of juvenile crab at Golden Gardens

The trap is checked every other day throughout spring and summer (April 15 th  – September 1 st ). Student(s) will need to identify a schedule to share the responsibility, which is typically a 1-2 hour time commitment during each sampling event. We’re looking for 4-5 students who could work together to sample throughout the week. Students must commit to sampling on average 3 times a week throughout the season.

During each sampling event, the trap is removed from the water and emptied into a basin. Organisms are sorted, identified, and counted before release. A subset of Dungeness crab megalopae are retained for measurement and additional tissue collection. Here’s a link to a short tutorial video (9-minutes):  https://www.pnwcrab.com/larval-crab-study?wix-vod-video-id=b42f5cba46f74374be4640260a73fcac&wix-vod-comp-id=comp-kgjuvgko . And if you want more details, here’s a link to the methods paper:  https://www.pnwcrab.com/_files/ugd/b705fa_80dd95db53fe42fd839883ab7f0cc621.pdf

Additional beach monitoring may occur 1-2 times a month. During each sampling event, ten quadrats are randomly selected. Using a trowel, the contents of each quadrat are excavated and sieved to remove all organisms. Crabs are sorted, identified, and counted before release. Dungeness crab are measured.

OSU, NOAA study finds marine heat waves disrupt the ocean’s food web in the northeast Pacific

Pyrosome samples

NEWPORT, Ore. (KTVZ) – Marine heat waves in the northeast Pacific Ocean create ongoing and complex disruptions of the ocean food web that may benefit some species but threaten the future of many others, a new study has shown.

The study,  just published  in the journal Nature Communications, is the first of its kind to examine the impacts of marine heat waves on the entire ocean ecosystem in the northern California Current, the span of waters along the West Coast from Washington to Northern California.

The researchers found that the biggest beneficiary of marine heat waves is gelatinous zooplankton – predominantly cylindrical-shaped pyrosomes that explode in numbers following a marine heat wave and shift how energy moves throughout the food web, said lead author Dylan Gomes, who worked on the study as a postdoctoral scholar with Oregon State University’s Marine Mammal Institute.

“If you look at single species interactions, you’re likely to miss a lot,” Gomes said. “The natural effects of a disturbance are not necessarily going to be straightforward and linear. What this showed us is that these heat waves impact every predator and prey in the ecosystem through direct and indirect pathways.”

The project was a collaboration by Oregon State University and the  National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration .  Joshua Stewart , an assistant professor with the Marine Mammal Institute, mentored Gomes and co-authored the paper.

“What I found both alarming and fascinating is the extent to which these pyrosomes absorb all of the energy in the system,” Stewart said. “Because nothing else really eats the pyrosomes, they just become this dead end, and that energy is not available for anyone else in the ecosystem.”

Marine heat waves are periods of prolonged, unusually warm ocean temperatures. The prevalence and intensity of marine heat waves is increasing around the globe. While the impacts of these heat waves on marine species have been well-documented on individual and population levels, the effects on the entire ecosystem have not been well understood, Gomes said.

To gain a more holistic view of the impact of marine heat waves, Gomes updated an end-to-end ecosystem model with new data on marine life throughout the ocean food web that was collected during local biological surveys.

He then compared how the food web worked before and after a recent spate of marine heat waves, including a large, well-documented event in 2013-2014 known as “the blob.” Much of the new data used in the model was collected following that event as researchers tried to better understand its impacts.

Some of the impacts were predictive – pyrosomes, for example, are known to thrive in warmer waters – but the analysis also showed that the ecosystem functions in ways that are not intuitive, Gomes said.

For example, the modeling showed how the dominance of pyrosomes drew energy out of the food web. That loss of energy is most likely to affect fish and marine mammals that are higher up the food chain, potentially impacting economically important fisheries and recovery efforts for threatened or endangered species, Stewart said.

Huge influxes of pyrosomes in the waters and on beaches in the Pacific Northwest in 2017 and 18 drew widespread public attention. Data from those events was included in the updated model.

The updated model used in the study could help commercial fisheries adapt harvest strategies that are impacted when fish commonly found in one area move to escape the encroaching warm water or their populations drop due to lack of available food following a marine heatwave.

Numbers of Pacific jack mackerel, for example, have increased following marine heat waves, but so far, fisheries have not shifted to catching them, the researchers noted.

The researchers’ methods could also provide a template for future research to understand the impact of these events elsewhere, Gomes said.

Additional coauthors of the paper are James Ruzicka of NOAA’s Pacific Islands Fisheries Science Center and Lisa Crozier, David Huff and Richard Brodeur of NOAA’s Northwest Fisheries Science Center. Gomes is now with U.S. Geological Survey.

The Marine Mammal Institute is part of Oregon State’s College of Agricultural Sciences and is based at Hatfield Marine Science Center in Newport. NOAA’s Northwest Fisheries Science Center also has a research station at Hatfield.

Appeals court blocks texas migrant law just hours after supreme court gave green light.

An appeals court blocked the Texas immigration law allowing for the arrest of illegal border crossers just hours after the Supreme Court had allowed it to take effect.

Local reports said there were no reports of arrests being made under the law in the few-hour window it was in effect.

The Supreme Court lifted a hold blocking the law Tuesday, arguing it needed to be ruled on by the lower 5th Circuit Court of Appeals first.

Greg Abbott and Donlad Trump at border

Late Tuesday, a federal appeals panel again blocked the measure, named Senate Bill 4, from being in effect, without explanation. The court will hear further arguments Wednesday.

The Biden administration has vigorously opposed Texas Gov. Greg Abbott’s attempt to bolster his state’s ability to stanch spiraling illegal immigration.

The White House has argued that the power to arrest and deport undocumented migrants rests solely with the federal government.

Migrants in Texas

Abbott has countered that Biden’s “deliberate” inaction on the migrant influx into Texas border towns has forced his hand.

Abbott lauded the short-lived victory Tuesday, but anticipated potential complications from the appeals court prior to its late-hour ruling.

“We still have to have hearings in the 5th circuit federal court of appeals. But this is clearly a positive development,” he had posted on X.

The law would render illegal entry a state crime, thus empowering law enforcement officers to arrest illegal migrants and permit judges to order their deportation.

As the dueling rulings unfurled this week, SB 4 was technically activated for several minutes on Monday, and for less than 10 hours on Tuesday.

Yexas

Mexican officials have vocally opposed the law, and it’s not clear if they would accept deported migrants into the country.

Customs and Border Protection recorded a record number of encounters at the border in December 2023, with more than 300,000 migrants attempting to cross into the US.

Fiscal year 2023 also saw a record number of arrivals with 2.4 million people encountered at the southern border.

Migrant holding facilities often operate at well over capacity and immigration courts are grappling with a backlog of more than 3 million cases.

Abbott has pursued other means of slowing the migrant surge, including placing fencing around a park on the banks of the Rio Grande that had served as a congregating point for undocumented border crossers.

Some of the best decking materials include:

  • Wood: Cedar, redwood, and tropical hardwoods offer a classic look but require regular maintenance.
  • Pressure-Treated Lumber: Affordable pine that resists rot and insects but may need staining.
  • Composite Decking: Low-maintenance blend of wood fibers and recycled plastic, available in various colors.
  • PVC Decking: Synthetic option resistant to stains, scratches, and fading, but can be pricey.
  • Aluminum Decking: Lightweight, durable, rust-resistant, suitable for water areas, but more expensive.
  • Vinyl Decking: Low-maintenance, moisture, and rot-resistant, but quality varies.

It’s better to build a patio when:

  • Privacy is a priority: Patio provides a sense of privacy, especially when enclosed.
  • Budget and low maintenance are the priority: Patios are generally more cost-effective to build and require less maintenance.
  • The ground is flat: For even ground, constructing a patio is easier and more straightforward.

It’s better to build a deck when:

  • Scenic views are desired: Decks offer better views.
  • You are fine with obtaining building permits and inspections: Decks typically require permits and inspections due to their structural impact on the home.
  • The ground is uneven: If your backyard has slopes or uneven terrain, a deck can provide a stable and level outdoor space.
