Testimonials
I first rented a yacht from Preveza Sailing in 2003. Since then I have spent many holidays in Greece and can only say that every time sailing with them was reason to go back. They are dependable and best of all they have proven themselves to be the best of friends! They are people who do what they say! The pick up and delivery at the airport made the trip very easy. Their yachts are well maintained and well equipped for the surrounding waters. They can give you all the advice you need for a great Ionian sailing experience. We will be back! On a strip of land sandwiched between the Ionian Sea and Ambracian Gulf, and perfect for Greek island hopping, Preveza has it all. Thanks to its strategic position there was an important naval battle between future Roman Emperor Octavian and the naval forces of Cleopatra and Anthony which Octavian won and founded the city of Nikopolis (Victory City) in celebration of the success. The ancient city of Kassiopi is nearby too - said to be home of one of the god Zeus's wives, adding to the fun to be had for those with an interest in Greek history and mythos.
The Ambracian Gulf has seven saltwater lagoons and is an important wildlife haven with many species of interest in the bay to those with a love of nature.
There are also over 60km of sandy beaches between Preveza and nearby Parga. Pause awhile in the pedestrianised centre where you can wander around. Tavernas and restaurants abound with Mediterranean flavours combined with sometimes a very local flavour.
Two marinas are central to the economy locally - Preveza Marina and Cleopatra Marina are both major yacht charter hubs and are great jumping-off point for a sailing holiday on the Ionian Sea.
Explore Preveza By Renting A Yacht
Preveza is an important yacht charter hub for those who wish to enjoy the mainland and islands of the Ionian on your chartered yacht, both on a crewed charter and bareboat charter. Sailing north up the turquoise waters of the Ionian, Corfu is popular with tourists yet has an old way of life that in some parts hasn't changed for centuries - its ancient olive groves tended for generations and diet simple and delicious.
The main Ionian Islands of Lefkada (Lefkas Island), Kefalonia and Zakynthos are worthy of long pauses too. Lefkas Island has a lot for the tourist from its stunning beaches to its Lefkas Town with its alleyways full of delight.
Cephalonia was the setting for the Hollywood movie Captain Corelli's Mandolin thanks to its stunning scenery and beautiful fishing villages. Sandy beaches and a large cave system make this, the largest of the Ionian Islands, a destination you shouldn't miss on a Preveza yacht charter.
The southernmost of the Ionian Islands Zakynthos is home to the rare turtle species Caretta- that lay their eggs on the beaches every year. The scenery is some of the best in Greece and the villages worthy of a few hours and a long lunch break in too.
A Preveza yacht charter will give you the opportunity to explore these islands over a week or two at your own pace, enjoying the placid and great sailing conditions of the Ionian Sea as you do.

Suggested Sailing Routes From Preveza
With access to the Ionian Islands, the Peloponnese peninsula and Corfu, a Preveza luxury yacht holiday gives you lots of options.
7 days - Preveza and the Ionian Islands: Heading south down the Ionian Sea, you will island-hop along the islands of Lefkas, Cephalonia and Zakynthos, taking in the sights, smells and sounds of these islands. Pause at Shipwreck Cove on Zakynthos and explore the islands firstly north to south and then south to north.
7 days - Corfu: Heading north towards the Albanian border, you cross the sea to Corfu. This is an island worth of a multi day trip from the pretty streets of Corfu Town to the modern, cosmopolitan holiday town of Gouvia. Wander in the olive groves and beaches beloved of holidaymakers since the 1920s.
14 days - Peloponnese and the Ionian Islands: Itself closer to the Saronic Islands, the island of Kithra is widely held as the most southerly Ionian Island. Island and coastal hopping down the northern Ionian archipelago, where the seven-day trippers will head home you continue south and get to explore mainland Greece as well as you enjoy your extended trip to all of the Ionian islands.
Best Times To Hire A Yacht In Preveza
The sailing season runs from late April to October with July and August being the busiest months for yacht charter.
Unlike the Aegean, the Ionian Sea is dominated by the Bora - the same wind that affects nearby Croatia. In summer this is far more benign and far more sailing friendly than the often stronger Meltemi. Building to a fun F5-6 in the afternoon from a zephyr in the morning, you can almost time your daily sailing by it.
The sea is cooler - often quite chilly - at the beginning of the sailing season but there is rainfall in Spring. As the days lengthen you will still see green fields and flowers in May and the winds can be quite benign too.
Come September and October the seas are still like a warm bath. With the wetter climate than the Aegean, this is less of a problem so with the warm seas could be at least as good as the earlier months of the year.
Sailing Weather In Preveza
April to mid June: There is rainfall and the temperatures build steadily from the mid-teens to the mid 20 degrees C range. There are sometimes cooler northerly winds, though the southerly Bora kicks in around early May. There is more rainfall here than on Aegean Greece but that's often a relief from the heat.
Late June-August: You'll be unlucky if you see any rain, though it could be welcome in the summer heat. Temperatures are from 30s and the Bora often adds to the heat with its tropical origins.
September-October: The seas remain warm, as does the air. These months can be the best time of year to sail as the temperatures are often in the comfortable low to mid-20s though can touch 30C from time to time.
Frequently asked questions
The main points to consider are what is your budget, have you got the necessary sailing experience and qualifications to manage the boat if it's not going to have a skipper, whom you are taking sailing, where exactly you wish to go and what will the weather be like on the proposed dates of your trip.
There are two marinas in Preveza - the larger Preveza Marina with 300 berths and the smaller Cleopatra Marina with 100. Both have lots of good quality services.
To avoid the summer heat and crowds, if you can get to Preveza after autumn school term begins you will find the seas still warm, the air more comfortable and the marinas less crowded.
You will typically pay 50% up front on booking the yacht hire and the balance on arrival. You will either pay a security deposit with your credit card on departure or can get insurance covering damage in advance. In some cases (such as the recent Covid situation) charter companies may be more flexible but this depends on the individual charter companies themselves.
If you are at sea and in danger, call MAYDAY on VHF Ch16 or ring the coast guard on your phone if you have reception. If you have a mechanical fault and can make it to or are on a mooring you will be able to phone a help line number given by the boat charter company.
You should consider do you have the experience to handle the yacht charter or boat hire before you book and where do you want to go along with what the weather will be like. Bring warm weather and cool weather clothing if it looks like the weather can be cool as well as warm and remember at sea it can be cool on most evenings.
If you want to sail without a skipper then you will need relevant qualifications like RYA Day Skipper/International Certificate of Competence (ICC)/ASA 104 Bareboat certificate or the US Sailing Certificate. For small 'day boats' or if you choose to have a skippered on board your yacht charter you typically don't require licences.

Recommendations when leaving your vessel.
If leaving your boat, please ensure adequate chain is out. More is better.
All seacocks, with exception to the engine inlet, should be closed.
Please ensure that the fuel to the engine is left on.
We would recommend that your bimini is left folded back and secured.
Please ensure that your Genoa has been tightly furled with none of the sail extruding.
Furling mainsails should be correctly furled. With non furling mainsails please ensure that stack packs or sail covers are secure. We would recommend that the main halyard is removed from the sail.
Removable items (e.g. Outboards) should be stowed in a safe lockable place.
Dinghy – Please ensure that your dinghy is not left in the water. It should be suitably stowed either on deck or packed away. Particular attention should be paid to floorboards and oars and how the dinghy is secured.
Leaving your fridge slightly open is recommended. From experience we recommend that canned drinks are not left in fridges over prolonged periods.
Remember to turn your gas off.
Remember to take your rubbish out.
If leaving your boat at anchor, please leave your shorelines to be used, in an obvious location in the cockpit lockers, in the event that the boat needs to be brought to the quayside.
Where to anchor:
Please do not anchor too close into the shore. It makes it difficult for vessels leaving and departing from the town quay. Remember to empty your holding tank before entering the bay. It should be noted that under Greek Law an anchor light is required.
Terms and Conditions.
Hereafter Ruairi Bradley operating under Vliho Yacht Club will be referred to as “the company.”

Written instructions should be left onboard with relevance to the engine starting and stopping procedure, location of battery switches, windlass operation and windlass trip switch.
Any faults or special requirements with the boat should be recorded with the office in writing.
The owner shall take all necessary precautions against the outbreak of fire on his vessel. The Company reserves the right to move any vessel, gear, equipment or other goods at any time for reasons of safety and security or good management of our business and premises.

The vessel must be insured and have all necessary papers to be legal in Greek waters. A copy of the boat papers should be filed with the office.
The owner must notify the office of their return date and time prior to their arrival.
Access keys to the vessel must be left with the office.
If any work is to be carried out whilst you are away. A work list must be submitted to the office either in person or via email.
The company is acting as a guardian of your vessel and the company will do their utmost to prevent any harm or damage occurring to your vessel, as long as it does not put human life in danger.
In the event of damage or theft to the vessel. It is the responsibility of the owner / insurer of the vessel.
Payments to the Company.
Long Term Contracts – Invoices and statements will be issued on a monthly basis.
Short Term Contracts – Invoices will be issued at the end of the contract. In the absence of express agreement to the contrary, our price for work shall be based on labour and materials expended and services provided. A 50% deposit is required prior to the commencement of work. Unless otherwise agreed between us, payment for all works, goods and services shall be due immediately on the invoice date. Payment shall be deemed to have been made when we receive cleared funds. In regards to outstanding invoices, the company reserves a general right (“a general lien”) to detain and hold onto the owner’s vessel or other property pending payment by the Owner of any sums due to the Company.
If the Company is exercising its’ right of detention, it shall be entitled to charge the owner at the company’s standard rate for the duration of the detention and until the vessel or property has been removed from the company.
In respect to any queries arising from the invoice, the office must be notified in writing, in order that the issue can be investigated.
In the event of a query on an invoice, payment is expected for all sections of the invoice not in question.
Prices and estimates.
We will exercise skill and judgment when we give an estimate or indication of price. However, such estimates are always subject to the accuracy of information provided by the customers or by the Company and are usually based only on a superficial examination and will not include the cost of any emergent work which may be necessary to the vessel, gear or equipment nor the cost of any extensions to the work comprised in the estimate. We will inform customers promptly of any proposed increase in estimates prices and the reasons for it and will only proceed with the work or supply with the approval of the customer. The customer shall remain responsible for the cost of labour and materials already supplied or remaining to be supplied which are not affected by the proposed increase in price.
Any time given for completion of our work is given in good faith but is not guaranteed. We shall not be responsible for any delay in completion of the work or for the consequences of any such delay unless it arises from our wilful acts or omissions or from our negligence.
While we or our subcontractors are working on the owner’s vessel or equipment the owner shall not have access to it except by prior arrangement. We will agree reasonable access when it is safe to do so and when it will not interrupt or interfere with our work schedule.
We shall not be liable for any loss or damage caused by events or circumstances beyond our reasonable control (such as severe weather conditions, the actions of third parties not employed by us or any defect in a customer’s or third party’s property): this extends to loss or damage to vessel, gear, equipment or other property left with us for work or storage, and harm to person entering our premises or using any of our facilities or equipment. We shall take reasonable and proportionate steps having regards to the nature and scale of our business to maintain security at our premises, and to maintain our facilities and equipment in reasonable working order: but in the absence of any negligence or other breach of duty by us vessels and other property are left with us at the customers own risk and customers should ensure that their own personal property insurance adequately covers such risks. Customers may themselves be liable for any loss or damage caused by them, their crew or their vessels and whilst their vessel or other property is on our premises or is being worked on by us they shall be obliged to maintain adequate insurance, including third party liability.
Sub Contracting
We may subcontract all or part of the work entrusted to us by the customer, on terms that any such subcontractor shall have the protection and benefit of all rights and conditions, and of all limitations and exclusions of liability, which exist for us under these Terms of Business. Where we exercise this right we shall remain responsible to the customer for the performance of our subcontractor.
Quality Standards
We will complete our works to the agreed specification and, in absence of any other contractual term as to quality, to a satisfactory quality. Any defects should be promptly notified to us in writing. On notification by the customer of such defects, we will investigate the cause and if we are responsible under the company will remedy them or, at our opinion, employ other contractors to do so. Any remedial work which is put in hand by the customer directly without first notifying us and allowing us a reasonable opportunity to inspect and agree such work and its costs will invalidate this guarantee in respect of those defects.

Preveza Greece
INFORMATION ABOUT THE PREVEZA AREA
The Williams & Smithells brokers do extensive work in Preveza as well as Lefkas, but they are not the only boat buyers or sellers in the area. The names Feeling, Moody, Oyster, Northshore, Bowman, Wauquiez, Bavaria, Westerly, Beneteau, Jeanneau, Elan, and Dehler, all have holdings in Preveza, as do a range of customized yachts from the designers like Bruce Roberts.
Akition Marina
Closest to the airport, this marina is privately owned and has space for 600 boats. There are laundry, shower, electricity, and water facilities readily available to all who dock their boats here, as well as haul- out, launching, and dry-docking. This is not even to mention the repair and maintenance crews stationed close by.
Unlike other marinas, Aktion has no problem with those who wish to live aboard their boats while docked.
Ionian Marina
This marina is smaller than Aktion, with capacity for only 500 boats. There are many of the same services, however, including laundry, dry docking, maintenance, and repairs. Like Aktion, this is a privately managed marina, and is very secure.
Each boat docked in this marina is supported with a steel cradle, made of purpose-built steel, and has full access to electricity, water, showers, toilets, free internet, and chandlery.
The modern equipment and management style is the pride of Ionian Marina.
Cleopatra Marina
Located just 1.5 kilometers from the Aktion airport, and very close to Preveza, the Cleopatra Marina can accommodate 136 boats, up to 30 meters long and 8 meter draught. In the area, you can either dock or anchor, and all berths are equipped with power, water, and WiFi. Near the marina, a range of places to eat and stay, as well as shower, do laundry, or use the restroom. The fueling station has whatever lubricants you might need.
Under 24/7 security, you can feel safe either leaving your boat in the marina or while living aboard.
The variety of boats for sale, particularly through yacht brokers in Greece like Williams & Smithells are extensive and names such as Feeling, Moody, Oyster, Northshore, Bowman, Wauquiez, Bavaria, Westerly, Beneteau, Jeanneau, Elan, Dehler are well represented as well as specialist custom cruising yachts from the boards of designers such as Bruce Roberts.

From CruisersWiki
Preveza (Πρέβεζα) lies at the entrance to a large inland gulf, the Ambrakikos Gulf , on the Ionian coast of Greece , five miles NE of the town of Lefkas and the northern entrance to the Lefkas Canal. The gulf is entered via a half mile long entrance channel between extensive sandbanks, which is dredged to a depth of six metres. The town of Preveza on the NW side on entry has a half mile long quay with space for several dozen yachts to lie alongside or stern/bows-to, while on the SE side in the area of Aktion are three large boatyards, Cleopatra Marina , Ionion Marine (formerly known confusingly as Preveza Marine) and Aktio Marine. A road tunnel under the channel links the yards to the commercial centre, shops, banks and port authorities in Preveza on the opposite shore. Between them the yards can haul out over 1,500 boats and are a popular wintering spot for cruising yachts, with a full range of repair and maintenance services and well-stocked chandleries. In addition, Cleopatra has a small, 100-berth marina with all the usual services. On the Preveza side there is also an recently (June 2019) opened marina at the N end of the town quay and a small yard in an inlet about 0.8nM further north. The town's small airport on the Aktion side, 1.5 kms from the yards, has flights (mainly charter) during the season to most European destinations.

Note that strong currents of up to three knots can often be experienced in this area (from either direction) and yachts should be alert to the possibility of being carried sideways out of the channel. In cases of wind against current this can also set up a vicious chop at times.
Customs are in a new building on the eastern breakwater of the town marina, close to the commercial quay. The port police office can take a little finding. From the town quay walk north along the quay until the marina is on your right and a car park on your left. Cross the car park diagonally and look for the post office, distinguishable by three large yellow post boxes on the pavement in front. The port police office is above. The entrance is in the narrow street at the back of the building.
For payment of taxes you may be asked to go to the Tax Office 5-10 minutes walk away in the centre of Preveza! Ask for directions.
Preveza town quay
The town quay at Preveza extends for over half a mile. The S end begins just N of a grey octagonal building (a former night club) and the N end terminates at a short jetty enclosing the marina. The initial section from the octagonal building up to the 8th lamppost is shallow (less than 1.5 metres); yachts can go stern/bows-to or alongside for the next 200 metres, although there is a ledge along part of this section and a few small craft moorings to be avoided. Depths here are mostly 2.5 – 3.0 metres. Further N is a wide jetty where the fishermen park and a section of 100 metres of quay (painted with yellow markings) which is reserved for their use. From here the next 500 metres N is reserved for yachts. Depths along this section are 5.0 – 8.0 metres at the quay but more at the point where you will be dropping anchor: 10.0 -15.0 metres at the S end of the section to 8.0 – 10.0 at the N end. Consequently yachts tend to go alongside at the S end and stern/bows-to at the N end. The N end is more popular, since it is close to tavernas and bars, has better depths for anchoring and offers better shelter from the NE land breezes that tend to blow down onto the quay at night. However, it is noisy here and earplugs are definitely an advantage. Note that it is not very considerate to go alongside at this end unless out of season and you risk being boxed in by yachts on anchor moor if you do. There are a few iron bollards along the quay but plentiful stainless steel mooring rings. These are set back a metre or so from the quay and can be difficult to see when arriving. The quay is fairly high, so yachts with low freeboard may prefer to moor - if there is space - at a lowered quay section (identifiable by a length of green-painted railings). Note, however, that there is an outfall at the S end of this section which occasionally pumps out untreated sewage - so not a berth for those with sensitive olfactory organs!
Shelter on the quay is good in the prevailing NW winds, although a slight swell seems to work its way round the headland most afternoons. Also, there can sometimes be a chop overnight with the land breeze, which blows off the mountains to the E. This is normally not too uncomfortable unless there are fresh easterly winds to supplement it. The holding is good all along the quay in thick mud.
Fees on the south quay are per meter and (for a 10m yacht) approximately €6.20 (2016). Water & electricity points have now been extended further south and the charge is roughly doubled if you use them. The marinero who collects the berthing fee shows up in the afternoon. His colleague who collects the W&E fee usually turns up twice a day.
The bars can be extremely noisy in the late evening.
Note: The quay is certainly not a good place to be with strong winds from NE round to S, when it is better to anchor off the boatyards on the Aktion side or seek a sheltered anchorage further into the gulf.
Marinas & Yacht Clubs
- Cleopatra Marina lies on the E side of the channel (the Aktion side), next to the yard of the same name. It offers around 100 berths for yachts of up to 30 metres in depths of up to 8.0 metres (only during summer months). See separate Wiki entry .
- Preveza Marina is situated at the N end of the town quay, next to the commercial quay. Currently leased to and managed by Cleopatra Marina , it offers mooring lines/stern to berthing for around 200 yachts of up to 20 metres in depths of up to 3.0 metres. Water and electricity, toilets & showers. Chandlery, minimarket, coffee bar and restaurant. See separate Wiki entry .
N of Preveza Marina
This is a popular anchorage up the wide creek just N of Preveza Marina . The best approach is just N of the two port marker buoys marking the channel going N from Preveza commercial quay round into the Ambrakikos Gulf , where least depths are in excess of 12 metres.
Warning: Do not be tempted to cut the corner here, as there are shallows with least depths of barely 2.0 metres extending for nearly 250 metres NE off the commercial quay (which are not shown in some popular pilot books).
- An alternative anchorage is off the sandy shore on the Aktion side, just N of the boatyards, in depths of 3.0 – 8.0 metres. Holding is good in sand and mud and shelter adequate in the prevailing NW winds, but the position is untenable in strong winds from NW round to S.
- Finally, there are numerous further anchorages in the Ambrakikos Gulf , which offer good anchoring depths and shelter depending on the wind direction.
Provisioning
- Large three-storey supermarket 200 metres W of waterfront up the road at the S end of the pedestrianised area (coming from N, turn right at Executive Kiosk). Good selection of produce and small butchery section
- There is another, small supermarket with an amazingly good range of items in the first street back from the waterfront. The shop front is quite small and the shop easily missed. It is on the waterfront side of the street
- Gas is no longer stocked in the supermarkets. Enquire at Preveza Yacht Services . Alternatively the chandlery at Cleopatra Marina will exchange gas bottles
- Small minimarket opened May 2012 in Cleopatra Marina (0900-1500 and 1800-1900)
- Ambrosias , near the top of the alley leading E from the church clock tower, is the best value fish taverna in town and is hugely popular with the locals
- O Kaixis (The Mermaid) is excellent value and the owner Tassos is very helpful to yotties. It is up a small alley leading W from the waterfront past the Mythos Taverna . Preveza Yacht Services is right opposite
- There is a superb patisserie Nousias on the road to the W of the car park next to Preveza town marina. They have the most amazing selection of sweet confections as well as excellent ice cream
- Almost next to Nousias is a cafe/bar Aroma , which is currently the hot favourite with the locals and does a terrific chicken club sandwich
- WAOA , located in an alley leading west from the pedestrian street that parallels the waterfront south of the clock tower, has an excellent selection of prepared Greek dishes that you will be invited to choose from the open kitchen. Great food, people (Yanni) and value
- Obelix gyros bar, at the waterfront end of the alley leading E from the church clock tower, does excellent gyros and chicken wraps (only Euros 2.00 in September 2012)
- On the Aktion side, Panos Taverna , 300 metres south of the entrance to Cleopatra Marina, is excellent and popular with yottie
Transportation
- Flights from Preveza Aktion (PVK) airport. From May to October a number of charter companies operate direct flights from/to Manchester, Gatwick, Amsterdam, Dusseldorf and possibly some other European cities. Starting in 2015, Easyjet now also have regular flights from Gatwick to Preveza Aktion between May and October. From the airport it is only a short taxi drive to the boatyards on the Aktion side or through the tunnel to Preveza.
- Flights from Corfu airport . Scheduled and charter flights operate to/from Corfu throughout the season. From Corfu there are several ferries daily to Igoumenitsa (80 minutes) and a bus service (daily during the season and three times a week outside) from Igoumenitsa to Preveza bus station (90 minutes).
- Buses. There are regular long distance bus services operating from Preveza's main bus station to Athens and other destinations. The express service takes 6 - 8 hours depending on traffic. It is advisable to reserve a seat a day or so in advance.
- Taxis. Taxi ranks are located at the south of the quay and at the north on the main road. A taxi to Athens airport is 400E and takes about 5 hours.
- Karyatis Travel on the waterfront at Preveza are very helpful to yachtsmen and the owner Jenny speaks good English.
- There is a pleasant walk S from the town quay to the fort of Pantokrator. There are also several nice beaches en route with eucalyptus trees to provide shade.
- The Roman town of Nicopolis , built on the orders of the Emperor Augustus to commemorate his victory over Mark Anthony and Cleopatra at the battle of Actium (Aktion), lies two kilometres N of Preveza.
- The Ambracian Gulf is worth a sail. The gulf has many beautiful bays. Dolphins can be seen frequently, as can pelicans and turtles.

- Wintered on the hard at Ionian (2012) - very easy to work with. No problems with outside contractors and scheduling launch -- Monterey
- Berthing fees for a 10m yacht (2015): on the south quay (no facilities) Euros 6.20, on the north quay (water+electricity) approx. Euros 12. The marinero who collects the berthing fee only shows up erratically and does not necessarily collect the fee. Could get noisy from bars. -- Sy Swivel
