Does this 357-Foot New Yacht Belong to Steven Spielberg?

Oceanco is keeping details of the mammoth vessel’s owner under wraps.

Oceanco is used to catering for the fabulously wealthy; earlier this year the Dutch shipbuilder delivered Jeff Bezos’s gleaming new ship , Koru. Now, the rumor mill is going into overdrive once again. This time, Steven Spielberg is reportedly the billionaire behind its newest yacht: Seven Seas.

Spanning 357 feet, the mammoth motoryacht isn’t as long as Koru – which scooped the title of the longest sailing yacht on the planet at 417 ft – but she does cut an impressive figure. This isn’t Spielberg’s first foray into the yachting world – the Hollywood director had his first ship (also called Seven Seas ) delivered by Oceanco back in 2010.

The original Seven Seas – whose name is inspired by Spielberg’s seven children – measured 282 feet and boasted an expansive spa , gym, beauty salon, and, of course, movie theatre. But the four-time Academy Award winner sold the ship to Canadian billionaire Barry Zekelman in 2021 for a cool $151m (the ship has since been renamed Man of Steel).

It seems Spielberg has caught the superyacht bug; the new Seven Seas is even bigger and more lavish than her predecessor. So, what do we know about the director’s latest ship? While Oceanco has remained relatively tight-lipped on the project, a few key details have emerged which we’ll dive into here.

Who is building Steven Spielberg’s new yacht?

The superyacht – previously known as project Y720 – was commissioned back in 2022 for a whopping $250m. She was built by Oceanco – the same shipyard that made Spielberg’s old boat in Alblasserdam, a town in the western Netherlands around 12 miles from Rotterdam. Omani billionaire businessman Mohammed al Barwani bought the luxury shipyard back in 2010 (he also owns Turquoise Yachts in Istanbul).

Oceanco has an impressive track record when it comes to building jaw-dropping superyachts. As well as recently unveiling Bezos’s Koru, four years ago the shipbuilder delivered Black Pearl – a striking three-mast vessel which, at 350 ft, became the largest sailing yacht in the world at the time, and garnered attention for its cutting-edge eco-credentials.

What do we know about the design?

Oceanco collaborated with Dutch firm Sinot Yacht Architecture Design to build Spielberg’s new yacht. The project was overseen by Lateral Naval Architects, with the team carrying out an “extensive optimization process” to ensure Seven Seas met the highest performance standards (she is the first LY3-compliant yacht to feature a Marine Evacuation System).

Powered by twin MTU 20V 4000 M73L diesel engines, she is able to reach top speeds of up to 20 knots and weighs in at 4,444 GT. Her sleek steel hull, teak deck, and lightweight aluminum superstructure give her a graceful silhouette; this is certainly a yacht to turn heads.

Considerably larger than Spielberg’s former yacht, Seven Seas 2.0 can host up to 14 guests across seven cabins (so there’s plenty of space for his entire family). There’s also room onboard for up to 30 crew, plus a gym, pool, spa, beach club, helipad and tender garage. Oh, and there’s a movie theatre too. Obviously.

The fourth largest project delivered by Oceanco to date, she was glimpsed for the first time in March 2022 being rolled out of the construction shed at the shipyard and was spotted in the Port of Gibraltar in early July.

How about the interiors?

It’s extremely unlikely we’ll get to see inside Spielberg’s new yacht anytime soon, but we do know the interiors onboard Seven Seas have been crafted by Beverly Hills-based designer Molly Isaksen (in a telling sign she was also brought in for the interiors onboard Man of Steel ).

While details remain sparse, Oceanco did reveal we can expect plenty of “natural materials and glass onboard, offering guests an unparalleled outward-looking experience”.

It’s a wrap for Steven Spielberg’s superyacht Seven Seas .

The world-famous director finally sold his epic 282-footer last week to an unknown buyer, according to Merle Wood & Associates . Although the brokerage firm did not specificity the amount paid, the vessel, now known as Man of Steel , was listed earlier this year for $160 million . Thom Conboy of Denison Yachting represented the buyer, who is apparently a longtime repeat client.

The blockbuster yacht, built by noted shipyard Oceanco to Spielberg’s exact specifications, first hit the seas back in 2010. The Academy Award winner, who has a net worth of $3.7 billion, spared no expense when designing his dream machine, and this is the first time it has been offered for sale.

The glitzy interior, which was penned by Nuvolari & Lenard and Molly Isaksen, spans four decks and offers ample space for entertaining A-listers. The vessel can accommodate 20 guests across nine generous staterooms, as well as 28 crew. The scene-stealer is, of course, Spielberg’s owner’s suite, which features a full-beam stateroom with ensuite and dressing room, along with an office and a terrace with its own private jacuzzi.

Naturally, Seven Seas is brimming with amenities fit for film royalty, including supersized screens in every room and a full movie theater. Elsewhere, there is a sauna, steam room, gym, pool, huge beach club, helipad and countless lounge areas and bars. As expected, there’s also a fully-stocked garage packed with a tender, speedboat, water toys and diving gear.

Spielberg ensured Seven Seas lived up to her name, too. Over the past decade, the 74-year-old has taken the go-anywhere superyacht all across the seven seas. It’s been spotted sailing off the coast of France during the Cannes Film Festival, and, more recently, on the waters near Antigua and Barbuda. The yacht’s transatlantic capability comes courtesy of twin MTU engines packing 4,680 hp each. She can hit a top speed of 20 knots or cruise at a more leisurely 15 knots.

Now that Spielberg has called cut on Seven Seas , we are patiently awaiting his next marine masterpiece.

The Incredible Features Of Steven Spielberg's $160 Million Superyacht

In 2021, the Seven Seas, the luxury yacht belonging to billionaire movie director Steven Spielberg, was sold to billionaire steel magnate Barry Zekelman after being listed for almost $158 million earlier in the year (via Bloomberg ).

Spielberg first commissioned the 282-foot yacht in 2010. The superyacht was designed by Oceanco, a luxury shipbuilding company from the Netherlands. If the name sounds familiar, this company has also recently built a superyacht for Amazon founder  Jeff Bezos . The Seven Seas was custom-made for the award-winning film director and has lots of amenities and high-end features. It's a powerful ship that can hit a top speed of 20 knots and a cruising speed of 15 knots. The yacht also has two MTU engines, which provide a walloping 4,680 horsepower each, according to Robb Report .

In the past, this yacht has been sailing all over and has been seen cruising off the coast of France during the Cannes Film Festival, and in the Caribbean near the islands of Antigua and Barbuda.

It's decked out inside

The Seven Seas has four spacious decks and plenty of room for relaxing and entertaining guests. It features nine cabins that can accommodate up to 20 people, plus 28 crew members. The owner's suite for Spielberg is gorgeous and has a deck with a jacuzzi, office, and private terrace. It also has a full-beam VIP stateroom on the main deck with several other cabins on the lower deck (via Robb Report and Superyacht Times ).

Designers Nuvolari Lenard and Molly Isaksen collaborated to create the boat's lush wooden-themed interior (via Architectural Digest ). As would be expected, a yacht as opulent as the Seven Seas is jam-packed with amenities for Spielberg and his guests to enjoy. Published photos of the Seven Seas show jumbo screens in every room and a home cinema onboard. You can also find a sauna, steam room, gym, massage room, lounge areas, bars, and a swimming pool. This yacht is so large it can even accommodate a helipad. Like other superyachts, it comes with the standard garage where you can fit speedboats, water toys, and diving gear.

Now that Steven Spielberg has sold his yacht, fans just have to wait and see if another mega yacht is coming in the future.

A Closer Look at Steven Spielberg's Yacht Seven Seas

Few names in Hollywood can compare to Steven Spielberg. The mention of this award-winning filmmaker’s name alone brings about memories of some of the industry’s best movies including Jaws, Indiana Jones, Schindler’s List, Lincoln, Ready Player One, and so many more. While we only know a few details about how Spielberg lives his private life, we do know that he owns a yacht—a superyacht at that. Called the Seven Seas , Spielberg’s yacht is the type that exists only in dreams. We’re going to head for the ocean to take a closer look at Spielberg’s yacht and what makes it incredible.

First off, it’s important to note that Spielberg’s yacht is worth about $184 million. That’s a lot of money, but it’s not that big of a deal for someone whose net worth is about $3.7 billion. Spielberg continues to add to that net worth, not only through making films but also through his yacht. Business Insider tells us that Spielberg actually opened up the doors to his yacht to allow anyone to charter it for a fee. We say anyone because even you can charter the yacht as long as you can afford the monthly fee of $1.2 million. If that fee is a little too steep for you, allow us to just indulge your senses by telling you why the yacht might be worth that much.

First off, it may sound ridiculous but people have insane amounts of money everywhere. And Spielberg can charter his yacht by that much because he is who he is. His superyacht is actually for sale, and it’s a good sales strategy to allow potential buyers to charter the yacht before purchase. This 282-foot long vessel was designed and built by Dutch company Oceano . The style of the yacht is sleek and elegant. Apart from its size, you can tell how luxurious it really is from its exterior design. The blue hull perfectly contrasts the white color of the upper deck platform. It’s simply a stunning view from any angle you take it in.

The Interior

Moving into the interior is a similar experience. Every single room inside the yacht is outlined with beautiful and rich wooden materials. The décor is exotic, eclectic, and equally luxurious. Every single room in the superyacht is larger than average rooms on land. But the room sizes aren’t the best part about the Seven Seas. When Oceano created this yacht, they packed it in with a number of amenities that only the rich could afford to have built. The Seven Seas has a gorgeous infinity pool, but it’s no ordinary infinity pool. This area is outfitted with a 15-foot dual-purpose glass screen that serves as a monitor for movies to be played on. After all, what’s a Spielberg yacht if you can’t watch movies on it? The infinity pool happens to also serve another luxury purpose: a helipad. The pool converts somehow just so a helicopter (maybe Spielberg’s) can come and go as needed. Other amenities in the yacht includes an indoor cinema with a screen larger than the infinity pool’s, a fully equipped gym that features an amazing panoramic view of the ocean, a fully functional spa for relaxation, and of course, a fully stocked bar for some libations.

Watersports

The fun doesn’t end there at the Seven Seas. The yacht will also give you access to a lot of watersports options. As a guest on this yacht, you can have access to various watersports equipment such as snorkels, wetsuits, kayaks, sea bobs, water skiis, and so many more. For those seriously considering renting out this charter, you’d have to consider the accommodations first. The yacht needs 26 crewmembers to be fully staffed. The rest of the guest rooms can be occupied by up to 12 guests, plus Spielberg. While all the guest rooms are lovely and amazing, not all guest rooms are created equal. You could expect that Spielberg’s room happens to be the best, as it features a study room and a Jacuzzi among other special things. All of the guest rooms are fit to welcome some of Hollywood’s royalty including Leonardo di Caprio and actress Blake Lively.

When it comes to performance, only true power could pull a yacht of that size. The Seven Seas has an incredibly powerful engine that has a maximum speed of 20 knots. The superyacht cruises at 15 knots. It has a range of 15,000 nautical miles, and it’s outfitted with some of the best stabilizing mechanisms out there. Interestingly enough, Spielberg is actually prone to seasickness. In fact, he’s said a few times before that he’s actually not much of an ocean person. People have said similar things before only to have their minds changed by the ocean. It’s been rumored that the reason why Spielberg is chartering the Seven Seas is that he wants to sell it for a bigger yacht. Despite the seasickness, Spielberg has fallen in love with the ocean and the boating life. He wants more yacht space than what he’s got now, and we can only speculate that he’s probably looking to spend more time in it than he does now. After all, being in the ocean for a long time can begin to feel claustrophobic. It’s been rumored that Spielberg has his eyes set on a particular yacht that sails at about 300 feet. It isn’t much bigger than the Seven Seas, but it sure costs much more. The new yacht is said to cost $250 million, and it probably has even better amenities than the Seven Seas. For now, Spielberg is enjoying the superyacht he has now until it’s time for the next.

86m Oceanco superyacht Seven Seas sold

The 86 metre Oceanco superyacht Seven Seas has been sold and is now renamed Man of Steel . 

The yacht, which was jointly listed for sale by Edmiston and Merle Wood & Associates , was sold with the buyer introduced by Thom Conboy and Chris Collins of Denison Yachting .

First delivered in 2010 and only ever used privately, Seven Seas is packed with premium superyacht features, including a touch-and-go helipad, a range of custom-built tenders, professional cinema and private owner’s deck.

After completing its 10-year Class Survey last year, the yacht was presented in turnkey condition.

The exterior design is penned by Nuvolari & Lenard while the naval architecture comes courtesy of Azure Naval Architecture . The “contemporary and elegant” interior meanwhile was created in collaboration between Nuvolari & Lenard and Molly Isaksen.

Accommodation on board is for a total of 20 guests, comprising the owner’s suite on a private deck with a Jacuzzi, a full-beam VIP, three doubles and one triple cabin on the main deck and a further “sea cabin” on the lower deck big enough for three. The crew quarters meanwhile allow for a staff of 28.

Seven Seas boasts extensive health and wellness facilities, including a swimming pool on the large aft deck, gym, massage room, sauna and steam room.

The asking price of Seven Seas has been withheld.

Now it seems as though the famed director wants to recoup some of his impressive investment – he’s offering the ultra-luxurious yacht for charter at $1.3 million per week. That makes it the world’s most expensive yacht charter, leaving the likes of P. Diddy and Simon Cowell’s crafts in the dust.

The 282-ft. vessel, custom built by Dutch shipyard Oceanco, features an elegant and tasteful interior design scheme by Nuvolari & Lenard. The Seven Seas is equipped for the most demanding Hollywood mogul. It’s most striking feature is an infinity pool with a 15-foot glass wall that doubles as a movie screen so Spielberg and guests can watch his latest production while swimming or lounging poolside.

Celebrity guests on the megayacht have included Leonardo DiCaprio and Blake Lively, who were pictured on board when the yacht was in the French Riviera.

It also boasts accommodation and extensive amenities for 12 guests along with a crew of 26, including a private owner’s deck with a large separate master stateroom featuring a study and private deck area with a Jacuzzi and VIP cabins for his movie star pals. Other luxury touches include a fully equipped gymnasium, a spa and massage room and another indoor cinema – all fitted out with tons of walnut, teak and rosewood.

I n a significant legal move, New York Attorney General Letitia James and her team have initiated steps to seize assets from former President Donald Trump following his inability to post bond in the $464 million civil fraud ruling against him.

The first tangible indication of this endeavor came as James filed judgments in Westchester County, signaling the state’s readiness to take Trump’s golf course and private estate, famously known as Seven Springs, located north of Manhattan.

These judgments were formally entered with the clerk’s office in Westchester County on March 6, merely a week subsequent to Judge Arthur Engoron’s ruling, which held Trump — and his sons Donald Trump Jr. and Eric Trump, and the Trump Organization — liable for the staggering $355 million, plus interest.

James has set a deadline of March 25 for Trump to fulfill the bond requirement linked to the judgment, although Trump’s legal team has indicated posting the bond is an “impossibility,” after approaching more than 30 firms.

Here are the properties at stake.

Nestled within the serene landscapes of Westchester County lies the opulent Trump Seven Springs estate, a prestigious 230-acre haven spanning three towns: Bedford, Armonk and Chappaqua.

Originally built in 1919 by Eugene Meyer, former publisher of the Washington Post and chairman of the Federal Reserve, this magnificent mansion was acquired by the Trump Organization in 1996, marking the beginning of a new chapter in its storied history.

The estate was crafted over five years with the labor of 500 Italian masons and other artisans from across the globe.

Beyond the main mansion, the estate boasts carriage houses, each with its own unique charm, and a tudor-style mansion constructed in 1919 by H.J. Heinz, founder of Heinz ketchup and a close associate of Meyer.

Donald Trump’s vision for Seven Springs was ambitious and initially sought to transform it into a luxurious golf course. Yet, despite two decades passing since its purchase, no greens have been laid. Instead, the estate has evolved into a secluded retreat for the Trump family.

Purchased for $7.5 million in 1996, Trump’s plans for an 18-hole golf course faced fierce opposition from neighboring towns concerned about traffic and environmental impact on Byram Lake, a vital water source for Mount Kisco.

Despite years of effort, Trump ultimately abandoned the golf course project, leaving Seven Springs as a cherished family sanctuary.

Eric Trump fondly recalls his upbringing at Seven Springs, where summers and weekends were spent on its sprawling grounds, including the palatial 50,000-square-foot main home.

“My father, during the summers, would always put us to work,” Eric said in a 2014 interview with Forbes. “We were literally riding mowers around, we were mowing all the fields, cutting down trees and fallen trees, cutting rebar and laying marble and doing electrical work, doing demo work.”

From assisting in maintenance tasks to exploring the woods and fishing on Byram Lake, the estate was a playground for the Trump siblings. The carriage house served as their cherished retreat until Eric eventually moved on. “It was home base for us for a long, long time, until I finally bought another house and moved out,” he said.

Seven Springs boasts 60 rooms, 15 bedrooms, and an array of amenities including three pools, a bowling alley and hiking trails.

Trump National Golf Club Westchester, in Briarcliff Manor, stands as a premier private golf club spanning 140 acres of lush landscape, boasting an 18-hole course complemented by a sprawling 75,000-square-foot clubhouse.

Originally established in 1922 under the moniker Briarcliff Country Club, the venue underwent several transformations, known subsequently as Briar Hills Country Club and Briar Hall Golf and Country Club.

In 1996, the property found itself under the ownership of Trump, who acquired it for $7.5 million and promptly rebranded it to honor its location within Westchester County, akin to his other golf properties.

Under Trump’s stewardship, the club witnessed extensive renovations, culminating in its grand reopening in 2002, marked by the meticulous redesign of both the clubhouse and course, masterminded by architect Jim Fazio.

Trump himself presided over Trump National Golf Club LLC, responsible for managing the Westchester club, from August 2000 until Jan. 19, 2017, the day preceding his presidential inauguration.

Over the years, the club has boasted an illustrious membership roster, counting esteemed figures like former Yankees manager Joe Torre, along with Hollywood icons Jack Nicholson and Clint Eastwood.

During its heyday around 2003, luminaries such as Rudy Giuliani, Hugh Grant, George Steinbrenner and Regis Philbin also graced its greens.

The club’s amenities feature a state-of-the-art fitness center, tennis courts, a heated swimming pool complete with a Jacuzzi/spa area and even a designated kiddie pool for the younger members.

Inside the clubhouse, members are treated to amenities such as well-appointed men’s and women’s locker rooms, a kids’ game room and a cafe/restaurant.

Meanwhile, many in the real estate industry have slammed this civil real estate case as outrageous.

Kevin O’Leary, renowned entrepreneur and “Shark Tank” personality, didn’t hold back in his condemnation of a New York judge’s decision to slap Donald Trump with a jaw-dropping $355 million fine. In a scathing rebuke , O’Leary branded the ruling as “unjust,” “appalling” and ultimately “un-American.”

Manhattan Supreme Court Justice Arthur Engoron’s verdict not only levied the hefty fine, which has since amassed a hefty interest, against Trump — but also imposed a temporary ban on his business activities within his native New York. An appeal judge has ruled against the ban pending appeal.

O’Leary, known for his no-nonsense approach, didn’t mince words in criticizing the decision, warning of its potential repercussions on the entire real estate industry.

“That fact that he was found guilty, you might as well find guilty every real estate developer on Earth,” O’Leary previously said in an exclusive interview with The Post.

“I don’t understand where someone got hurt … What developer doesn’t ask for the highest price valued for any building they built?” O’Leary said.

“It’s not healthy for the country,” he added. “I want this reviewed and appealed and turned over because it’s wrong for everybody that participates.”

He later added, “If this judgment sticks. Every developer must be jailed. They must be found guilty. They must be put out of business. You can’t do this to one another. It’s not about Trump.”

Many of us at least once in our lives have heard the expression that Moscow is a port of five seas. But if you pick up a map of the Moscow region, then no one will find a single sea nearby. Why did they start talking like that? Let's start in order.

In ancient times, there were no cars, no trains, no planes, and it was always necessary to deliver food and other various goods to cities. The fleet came to the rescue. Of course, ships in antiquity were not the same as they are now. Today they can swim against the current with the help of an engine, and earlier ships were dragged on ropes. This work was done by horses. A man harnessed and led them along the coastline. However, it was difficult for horses, but it was even more difficult for a person to do such work.

This fact is confirmed by a painting by Ilya Repin called "Barge Haulers on the Volga". On it, the artist depicted a crowd of barge haulers, exhausted by hard work, who pull the ship on ropes. Their faces were burnt from the scorching sun, their foreheads covered with sweat, their clothes turned into shreds from hard work. It is scary to think how much strength and he alth these people gave in order to transportcargo to where it is needed. Sometimes a person had to move loaded ships in this way even through forests and meadows in order for the ship to continue its journey along the river. Since then, the expression has gone that ships do not swim, but go.

Muscovites know that there is a town of Volokolamsk in their region. The name of this city consists of two roots "volok" and "llama". This settlement arose precisely in the transshipment place where the ship was pulled out of the water of the Lama River and dragged along the land to the Voloshni riverbed. Such navigation of ships continued for many centuries, but in the 18th century Emperor Peter the Great came up with the idea of building a special canal. But the first mention of the port of the five seas in history will be even later.

Sovereign Peter the First came up with the opportunity to shorten the waterway for the ship. Imagine that from Moscow to Ryazan, a ship needs to sail not 200 kilometers, like a car, but much more. The thing is that the rivers are very winding, they have many twists and turns, so the waterway is longer than the highway.

Our emperor came up with the idea of digging a deep gutter in those parts of the river where it bends very strongly, then closing the old riverbed near the river, not letting water in, and filling the new gutter with it. This is how Peter's idea straightened out some rivers!

And indeed, this road was more convenient and shorter than the previous one. Surprisingly, such an idea made it possible to build waterways in places where they never existed. So that a person does not have to carry ships on himself,it was enough to dig a deep channel, and the highway for the fleet was erected.

You may be surprised, but the active sovereign nevertheless made such a project a reality. Under his leadership, the Vyshnevolotsk Canal was built. This body of water connected two rivers: the Tvertsa and the Tsna. So from the Volga the ships got into the B altic Sea. The port of the five seas was later built in the same way.

Sovereign Peter the Great at one time decided to connect the Moscow River and the Volga. But these plans were not destined to be fulfilled. In the 18th century, the emperor gave the order to draw up an estimate for the construction, and when it was prepared, having familiarized himself with it, Peter the Great said disappointedly: “However!”

The construction of such a canal at that time turned out to be very expensive and long, since there was no equipment that could do it quickly and without loss of life. And you and I are getting closer to answering the question: why is Moscow called the port of five seas?

Each of us knows that there is drinking water in the tap due to the fact that the city is built on the banks of the river. So it was with Moscow. On the threshold of the 20th century, the capital begins to develop so rapidly that the townspeople experience a shortage of clean water. The city authorities urgently needed to take any action.

And in 1931 it was decided to connect the main river of the capital with the Volga. Only she could help Moscow in this situation. The following year, the construction of the Great Moscow Canal began. The grandiose construction lasted 5years, and in the spring of 1937 the canal was successfully erected.

Its length was 128 kilometers. In the same spring, on March 23, the Volga was stopped for 3 minutes, and the canal was filled with Volga water. The Ivankovskoye reservoir was filled, on April 18, water from the Volga gave capital residents to drink!

It turns out that not all Muscovites know how long the water they drink has covered.

That's the answer to the question. The channel was opened during the reign of Joseph Stalin. This expression sounded from the lips of the head of the Soviet state. The meaning of this phrase was that after the construction of the Moscow and Volga-Don canals from the main city, you can get to:

• Sea of Azov.
• B altic Sea.
• Caspian Sea.

The status of "port of five seas" can be assigned not only to Moscow, but also to all those cities that have a water connection with the capital. These cities include Uglich, Volgograd, Kazan and so on. It was common for the Generalissimo of the Soviet Union to build such large-scale projects, so it was Stalin who came up with the idea to make the port of five seas in Moscow.

Why is Moscow called ‘the port of five seas’?

Moscow has many nicknames : ‘A City on Seven Hills’; ‘The Third Rome’; ‘White-Stoned’; and most surprisingly, ‘The Port of the Five Seas’. Geography, however, won’t help in explaining how this is possible. If you look on a map, you’ll see that Moscow’s location is not even close to any sea. The nearest is the Gulf of Finland (which flows into the Baltic Sea) and where St. Petersburg is located. But that’s about 600 kilometers from Moscow.  

How did this nickname originate?

As usual the answer lies in history, though not so distant in the past. The first to call Moscow ‘a port of five seas’ was Joseph Stalin, and the matter was connected with the country’s rapid industrialisation.

Huge ‘communist constructions’ were arranged throughout the Soviet Union. The most ambitious were canals. The most infamous project was the White Sea-Baltic Canal built by prisoners in record time, costing the lives of thousands of prisoners.

At the same time, Stalin arranged a huge plan for rebuilding Moscow. The city had to be modernized to be a suitable and impressive capital for the new ambitious and progressive Soviet nation. Moscow in the late 1920s, however, still looked quite provincial. For several centuries during the Imperial era it had become a second-rate city, since most development and progress was focused in the Tsar’s capital St. Petersburg.

Stalin began construction on a metro system, built new thoroughfares and highways, and even made the streets broader (in some cases even the buildings were moved !). Without any hesitation Stalin ordered to get rid of anything that could interrupt a new highway or prospect.

Many structures connected to the old regime were demolished, including dozens of old churches and monasteries, as well as the Kitay-Gorod Wall, a 16th century fortification in the city center, just one kilometer from the Kremlin.

To supply a rapidly developing Moscow with a large amount of drinking and industrial water, and to make it accessible to shipping, Stalin ordered the building of a canal that connected the relatively small Moskva River with the Volga River. (Peter the Great first thought of this ambitious idea back in the 18th century, but never realized it).

The 128 kilometers waterway was built by Gulag prisoners from 1932 to 1937. First it was called the ‘Moskva-Volga canal’, but in 1947 it was renamed the ‘Moscow Canal’. The famous phrase – Moscow is now ‘a port of five seas’ – was pronounced by Stalin in 1937 at the canal opening ceremony. 

Which seas does it connect with? 

The White Sea and the Baltic Sea were connected by a canal, and the Baltic Sea was connected with the Volga River by a system of canals and rivers. The building of Moskva-Volga canal made it possible to reach the White Sea and the Baltic Sea by sailing from Moscow.

The third sea is the Caspian, into which the Volga flows. Later, in the 1950s, another huge canal appeared - a 101 km waterway between the Volga and the Don rivers was built in Volgograd. This canal gave access from the Volga to the Sea of Azov - and subsequently to the Black Sea.

After all those big Soviet construction projects were completed, it was possible to reach the five seas without ever leaving one’s ship: the White, Baltic, Caspian and Black Sea, as well as the Sea of Azov.
