Royal Torbay Yacht Club is a   Royal Yachting Association (RYA)   recognised training centre offering a comprehensive range of RYA training courses: Powerboat Level 1 and   Powerboat Level 2 (PB2) ,   RYA First Aid ,   RYA Marine Radio ,   RYA Day Skipper Theory , RYA sailing courses and many more.

Our friendly, fully qualified instructors are passionate about sailing and have a wealth of experience training both adults and juniors. We aim to ensure a safe and fun learning experience tailored to everyone’s requirements, encouraging learning at a pace to suit each student’s ability and confidence.

Training courses are subject to last minute cancellation due to weather, low uptake, or unforeseen circumstances. If your course is cancelled, you will be offered an alternative date or full refund.

We are located a stone’s throw away from Torquay Harbour with convenient  parking   available just across the road. Our well-appointed Clubhouse, with its recently refurbished training facility, bar,   restaurant , and terraced garden overlooking Tor Bay provides the ideal location to relax after your training is complete.

RYA Yachtmaster Program

The Royal Yachting Association Yachtmaster certificate has become the industry standard qualification after the entry-level stage. It is the first formal training in navigation and seamanship that deckhands receive on their path to higher MCA issued certificates and it is a vital part of their maritime education.   If you are working towards your MCA OOW, Chief Mate or Master Certificate of Competence, you are required to successfully complete the shorebased theory course as part of your training. In Fort Lauderdale , the course includes: RYA Yachtmaster Coastal / Offshore Theory Course ($1250), RYA Yachtmaster Coastal / Offshore Practical Course ($2150) and the RYA Yachtmaster Coastal / Offshore Exam ($480).  In Antibes , the course fees if taken individually are RYA Yachtmaster Coastal / Offshore Theory Course 960 euros, RYA Yachtmaster Coastal / Offshore Practical Course 1700 euros and the RYA Yachtmaster Coastal / Offshore Exam including commercial endorsement is 330 euros. We also add the VHF and PPR to our package thus you make a considerable saving of 595 euros.  Objectives   You will learn methods of visual and electronic navigation, charts and chart-work, calculation of tidal heights and tidal streams, meteorology, the collision avoidance rules, safety and safety equipment.  Assessment  

Three written exams over the duration of the shorebased theory course.  During your RYA Final Practical Assessment with a 3rd party examiner, you will complete a verbal and practical examination.  This is not a beginners’ course! You will need to demonstrate practical boat handling and navigation abilities on an RYA approved twin-screw, inboard diesel motor vessel, (we do not currently offer Yachtmaster Sail) of up to 45’. Though we will provide direction and instruction specific to our training vessel you must have developed basic boat handling and navigation skills BEFORE taking this course. We strongly urge you to work through the RYA Essential Navigation course materials provided by the RYA before taking this course. We are happy to help you obtain this important study material.  You are required to hold the VHF (SRC) GMDSS Radio Licence, Valid First Aid certificate (to have been taken within 3/5 years), Valid Personal Survival Techniques certificate, Valid ENG1, and online PPR certificate.  FINAL Practical Assessment : You will be examined by an RYA examiner, who will test your practical ability as well as your written and verbal theoretical knowledge. Depending on your personal experience, you may be examined for either of the two qualifications listed below after successful completion of the RYA Shore based Course.  The majority of our RYA Yachtmaster candidates want to get the theory and practical courses done in quick succession, keeping the theory fresh in the mind and applying it immediately to the practical training.  The course is intense and rewards those who have prepared well so get the resources you need to start studying. A Yachtmaster Coastal Exam Candidate must have the knowledge needed to skipper a motor cruiser on coastal cruises but does not have the experience needed to undertake longer passages.  Any candidate preparing to exam for this Certificate of Competence must provide the following information to the examiner:  • Proof of Sea Time – 30 days , 2 days as skipper, 800 miles, 12 night hours  • VHF or SRC Radio Operator’s Certificate • First Aid Certificate A Yachtmaster Offshore Exam Candidate is competent to skipper a motor cruiser on any passage during which the yacht is no more than 150 miles from harbor.  Any candidate preparing to exam for this Certificate of Competence must provide the following information to the examiner:  • Proof of Sea Time - 50 days, 5 days as skipper, 2,500 miles, 5 passages over 60 miles, including 2 overnight and 2 as skipper  • VHF or SRC Radio Operator’s Certificate  • First Aid Certificate Additional documentation will be required if the candidate desires to have his/her license commercially endorsed.  These documents are listed in the RYA Yachtmaster Coastal/Offshore Theory Course description.  ***Scheduled dates may change due to Examiner availability or Inclement Weather *** Fee for the exam is based on 3 or more examinees for the date of examination.  To book this course individually, please contact an administration staff member @ +1-954-779-7764 in Fort Lauderdale or +33 4 93 34 47 73 in Antibes.

What to expect.

RNZYS Adult Learn to Sail Course is a Yachting New Zealand [internationally recognised] Level 1 sailing course. It has been set up for complete beginners who do not necessarily know one end of the boat from the other but have slight interest in either the water and water activities to simply learning a new skill to doing something out of their comfort zone The course format is either over 5 weeknights [5pm – 8:30pm], dinner included or two full days [weekend], lunch included. Over your time with us there will be a mixture of theory and practical sailing knowledge delivered by qualified YNZ instructors, in either our Elliott 7 (7m), Sonar (7m) or Farr MRX (10.2m) keelboats. Both the Elliott 7s and Sonars have 4 students per boat with 1 coach, the MRX has 7 students per boat with 1 coach.

What the course covers

During your Level 1 learn to sail course you will gain an understanding of safety on the water, basic navigation, boat maintenance and of course sailing skills;

• Sailing manoeuvres [tacks and gybes]
• Trimming sails
• Points of sail
• Rigging and de-rigging a yacht

What is included

Lunch or dinner is included and at the beginning of your course you’ll receive a one-month trial membership to the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron. You’ll be able to use the facilities and get a full taste of what being an active sailing member of the RNZYS is like!

On graduation you’ll receive a Yachting New Zealand Level 1 certificate.

The Sailing Office will provide help with the next stage of your journey: crew placement, join a Level 2 – Cruising, or Level 2 Race Crew Training course. You can even get involved volunteering in race management.

Which Level 1 Boat is Right For Me?

The MRX course is on a bigger and more stable boat, if you are nervous about sailing or around water, don’t want to get wet or are less mobile then this is the course for you. If you are looking at becoming a boat owner then the MRX course deals with more issues around boat ownership and systems on larger keelboats. The coach to student ratio is 1:6 with a qualified skipper as the coach.

The Elliott 7 course is on smaller more responsive boats; this can provide a steeper learning curve, the coach to student ratio is 1:4 with a younger Yachting NZ qualified keelboat coach on board, the course will be overseen by our Learn to sail manager. If you are more agile and confident around water this course is for you.

The Sonar fits nicely between the MRX and the Elliott 7. Sonars are a very safe, stable sailing boat, ideal for learning. They have been powered by an incredibly quiet discreet electric motor, which is used to manoeuvre the vessel in and out of the marina – it’s a very cool experience.  The coach to student Ratio is 1:4.

Where do we meet.

What should I wear?

The dress code for the RNZYS is closed footwear and no hats, tidy clothes will be fine.

For on the water you can normally just wear active clothes (shorts and t shirt) but you should aslso bring:

• Warm jumper wool is best in case of cold weather
• Warm jacket, wind and water proof if possible
• Thermal top and bottom if possible because of cold weather
• Drink bottle
• Sailing gloves

Life Jackets are provided, but if you have your own you are welcome to use it. You will be sailing just outside the Yacht Squadron, for up to four hours at a time.

Will I get wet?

Most likely not, but it is possible. It’s always a good idea to bring a change of clothes for after sailing.

What if it's bad weather, will the course be cancelled?

If there is bad weather for one session there will be a theory session, if there is bad weather twice in a course another day will be rescheduled. You will be notified by phone if the course is rescheduled.

Can the boats capsize?

No. Our boats are keelboats and are impossible to capsize.

How much of the course is theory verse practical?

Approximately two thirds of the time is on the water/practical and one third is theory.

Should I do an Elliott 7 or Farr MRX course?

Are the coaches qualified?

For the Elliott 7 course the coaches are senior sailors from the RNZYS Youth Training and Performance Programmes, often these are some of the best racing sailors in the country. They are all Yachting New Zealand Keelboat coach qualified, the course will be overseen by our Learn to Sail Manager who is an experienced coach. For the MRX course the coach is a fully qualified YNZ keelboat coach.

Does RNZYS offer RYA courses?

We run Yachting New Zealand courses YNZ Level 1 seamanship and YNZ Level 2 seamanship; RYA (Royal Yachting Association) is the British equivalent of YNZ. Both are endorsed and recognised internationally by the sailing governing body ‘World Sailing’.

Will I get a certificate after my course?

Provided you pass the course (most do) you will get a YNZ certificate which is Internationally recognised by World Sailing.

How much wind is too much to sail in?

Generally our wind limit is 20 knots, but this also depends also on sea state and other factors.

Should I do any preperation before the course?

You don’t need to but if you want to, checking the weather forecast and tides can help.

Will I be able to skipper a boat on my own after the course?

For a Level 1 course normally no if you had no prior experience. It is very different for different people though and depends a lot on your confidence. After a Level 2 course you will have all the information you need to skipper a boat safely yourself. Either way we do recommend you gain more experience and confidence as a crew before doing any long trips as a skipper.

How do I continue to sail after I finish the course?

We have a lots of frequent and cruising regattas at the club and we can help place you on a RNZYS member’s boat. We can also help you if you are looking to purchase your own yacht.

Should I become a member of RNZYS?

Yes! In fact if you sign up to a course you are already a member as the course includes one month membership to the RNZYS which allows you to use all the facilities at the club. After the month long free period you can decide if you wish to carry on the membership, which we strongly encourage you to do. RBYC Sailing Academy

We are passionate about introducing people to sailing at all levels.  For first-time sailors we offer a learning pathway to take students from the beginner level to competent sailors. If interested, students can also join our advanced training groups to involve themselves in competitive sailing.

The RBYC Sailing Academy is Bermuda’s oldest RYA (Royal Yachting Association) Training Centre. The RYA is recognized worldwide and their certifications are highly respected. The curriculum is supported by the appropriate RYA shore-based theory courses. Please note, RBYC members receive a preferred rate.

RYA Powerboat Handling (level 2)

A formal course to develop you as a self-sufficient powerboater in the right conditions, aware of own limitations and those of craft. The course takes 2 days and includes coastal theory and preparation for anyone who will be powerboating on the sea and for those wanting to apply for an ICC. Candidates do not require a Level 1 certificate to attend a Level 2 course.

• Preparing the boat, lines, fenders, safety equipment, fuel tanks, lines and safety gear

Experienced european owners brought together a top team of Dubois, Fitzroy and Tessier to produce their dream yacht: sleek, sophisticated and impressive under sail.

The push for a single level between bridge, saloon and cockpit, combined with ultra-sleek aesthetics, nudged the Dubois design team into new territory. “To get good visibility from the helmstations we had to work hard to lower the accommodation as much as possible, while keeping an open feeling” adds McKeon.

The interior, styled and drawn by Remi Tessier , features a combination of bleached timbers and white leather which results in clean modern lines and provides bright comfortable living areas.

Fitzroy Yachts Zefira

The sea trial was pubblished on Superyacht 31 – spring 2012

Zefira S/Y is one of those few yachts that became an attraction for yacht enthusiasts and professionals  well before she hit the water.

This yacht was designed and built with the experience and passion for sailing boats her owners demonstrated from the start as well as a naval engineering and a project design team from  Ed Dubois studio for the exterior, while Remi Tessier was responsible for all the interiors. Zefira was built in a yard which enjoys a  worldwide  reputation for the construction of large sailing yachts.

With such an opening introduction one can expect nothing less than something absolutely extraordinary, where the term used must be read in its best meaning to underscore something that has really nothing of the ordinary. We had the pleasure of talking with the owners who are currently sailing on their yacht after they had  carried out important work in the design phase with the project team to define specific guidelines and details.

Beyond the highly involving dialogue which ensued with flowing examples  of their own sailing experience and passion, we managed to grasp and better understand the idea behind the project which began with a seven metre sloop and  gradually developed in the course of the following 40 years  of which  many were spent at  sea. Putting words to emotion and feelings is never easy to do and  more so when they are other people’s. In this case however everything was a lot easier for us   thanks to our interviewee’s eloquent communicative capability.

The first point our attention was brought to was that Zefira is the largest sailing y

acht ever designed by Dubois with no fly bridge and built by Fitzroy Yachts in New Zealand.  This may strike our readers as a mere detail, but it is in fact one of the principal fundamentals outlining this project because it translates into flowing external lines and a unique profile when observed sideways on.

The choice  of doing without a fly bridge is somewhat unusual since up until  recently a “fly” had been widely accepted as  a run of the mill thing to have on a sailing yacht beyond a given size, but which nevertheless, Zefira is proud to do without giving cause for, among others ,  the following comment volunteered by some of the designers not involved in the project: “The world of sailing now stands  divided between before Zefira and after Zefira”.

Naturally enough this comment in particular is aimed at the yachts’ profile, which brings to a standstill what had become a consolidated practice on yachts this size. Aesthetics is principally  why the owners decided to do without the fly option as well as for practical reasons  they eloquently highlighted: without one  on a  50 metre sailing boat  there’s a complete total view of both what lies ahead up to the horizon and of the sail plan.

Moreover using a higher windswept and sun scorched horizontal plane rather than the main deck itself is by its very nature something destined to be exploited only sporadically and quite correctly in their opinion doesn’t justify having one.

The thought behind the whole project as the requests submitted to both designers and yard indicated,  were to enjoy a pure thorough bred for its performing lines and technical contents, capable of offering the sort of space and commodities expected when cruising extensively in all weather conditions. At a first glance the goal seems to have been easily achieved, but if  we then go into an in-depth analysis, the comments volunteered by project designers earlier seems surely appropriate. The husband and wife team (the owners) followed up on construction work from the initial stages to completion, working through the more important phases in close contact with the professional teams involved.

According to the owners the best part was witnessing the step by step progress of such an enterprise. We can understand the reasons why and genuinely  hope that in  the future such desire will generate the construction of other such extraordinary ships.

Several International prizes for design and technical contents have been awarded to Zefira. Dubois Naval Architects’ studio is proud of the recognitions bestowed since this is the largest sailing yacht project without a “fly” they’ve ever made so far and also for the passion and creativity expressed time and time again by the owners who incidentally had been the previous owners of another Dubois  project built by Alloy Yachts: Kokomo of London (now Nubero Blau). The challenge taken on by the studio was one that meant blending the huge experience acquired by the owners to innovative aesthetics, with a hull capable of delivering the sea-keeping qualities and performance requested.

The owners wished for a boat that could be another home from home: spacious, with a project design that looked ahead into the future. For this reason the design team was invited by the owners to pay them a visit and to take a look at their house to better understand what they wanted.

The choice of the yard was principally dictated by delivery times even if Fitzroy Yachts had been chosen also in function of preceding work carried out from Dubois projects.

Among some of the clever solutions highlighted by the owners in the course of our conversation we wish to mention the ease in steering they experienced and handling the yacht, of course aided by electronics and important data communication systems capable of monitoring and performing many of the required manoeuvres without hindering visibility.

The rig which is capable of carrying up to 3,000 square metres of canvass is per se a very interesting technical achievement inasmuch as it sports a 63.50 metre mast and can still be defined as being “light”. Obviously there’s a carbon fibre mast and boom, as well as fibre stays that have been purposely chosen to reduce weight high above the waterline which translates into less draught and better performance in breezes.

All of the choices adopted for Zefira mean she is very competitive on the race track even against racers and  in spite of the many commodities she carries with her.  As for the interiors and  much of the work put in by  Remi Tessier designer and the co-owner they enhanced an undoubted feeling of both tranquillity and elegance.

Gauged chromatic variety  meets the discerning eye as it takes in lighter and darker shades of handcrafted woodwork placed without ever causing excessive contrast, followed by polished steel elements and ad hoc lighting which enhances relaxation throughout every area. The space chosen to house each piece of furniture, is fruit of  careful study that has contributed into ensuring an uncompromised degree of comfort in the owners’ suite which is situated in the stern and in each of the three guest cabins as well.

One is a twin while the other two are double each one of them sports its own private bathroom. The crew quarters are situated in the bow area and with space for a lounge and crew mess room, which translates into staff’s quality living standards on board. The yacht’s convivial areas are also well distributed and large to ensure adequate privacy to guests and owners alike.

The electronics and navigation aids installed are the most modern on the market, with data and alarm control systems and displays in each of the two external command /control stations  as well as on the bridge deck as can be expected on a state of the art ship such as this. Dictated by reasons of space we have to limit our text to that which has so far been described even when the meeting with Zefira’s owners was so stimulating  we were prompted  to go further.

The interior, styled and drawn by Remi Tessier , features a combination of bleached timbers and white leather which results in clean modern lines and provides bright comfortable living areas. Generous accommodation spaces are provided for the owners and guests all with private ensuite facilities and state of the art entertainment systems. The large main deck saloon opens to a covered cockpit area which features electrically retracting side windows. The very best in lighting and entertainment control systems was incorporated into the yacht by Liquid Automation, allowing the interior ambience to be seamlessly controlled at the touch of a button.
