Heritage Intrepid 35

As most of you know, I’m a sucker for most any boat from the drawing boards of McCurdy and Rhodes. Normally, to get a M&R boat you are looking at custom boats, or those from Hinckley, so deep pockets required.

But, while I was researching something else, I discovered that, back in the 70s, the firm designed some very nice smaller production boats for Heritage Yachts in Canada and Seafarer Yachts in the USA.

Seems to me these might make great starter boats, that will sail better and are better designed for going offshore than many others of the time. They are also way prettier than most: no one can draw a shear-line the way M&R can.

The one pictured above is an Heritage Intrepid 35 that looks well taken care of, with an asking price of a bit over $30k .

Note that this post is the result of fifteen minutes research and I have no idea how well built, or not, these boats are, or how well they have aged, so do your due diligence .

Heritage 35

Heritage 35 is a 35 ′ 0 ″ / 10.7 m monohull sailboat designed by McCurdy & Rhodes and built by Heritage Yacht Builders Co. Ltd. (CAN) between 1974 and 1977.

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

• SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
• D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

• D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
• LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

• D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
• LOA: Length overall in feet
• Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

Heritage Yachts was located at Oakdale, ONT. In 1976, the molds were purchased by Grampian Marine, which went out of business before any additional hulls were built. Same tooling was later used for the INTREPID 35.

Model Measurements: 35" High x 4" Wide x 27" Long (1:53 scale)  the brand new, museum quality, limited edition, scale replica Intrepid sailboat is offered exclusively. This sail boat includes a numbered Certificate of, as only 100 will ever be made. Accurate in almost every detail to the original intrepid sail boat, this intrepid sailboat offers features not available by other sellers, and has many upgrades over all other sailboat models available. 

   <span">This model has been already assembled. The sails although are unassembled to ensure safe shipping. All rigging, lines, and stays have brass hooks attached. They easily hook into eyelets on mast, boom, sprit, or deck. Pictured instructions with numbers on the hooks allow anyone to easily assemble this sailboat model in less than 4 minutes. This allows us to offer the model at a reasonable price. If assembled, the shipping cost alone would increase the cost by an additional $100. <span"> <span">This scale Limited Edition Sailboat replica offers higher quality and accuracy than any other sailboat model available such as:<span"> 

-  Additional and higher-quality deck details -  American flag from authentic fabric   -  Additional deck planks have been added and stained to match the actual Intrepid sailboat -  Additional and higher-quality solid brass metal railings and cleats have been added -  Highest quality, accurately scaled solid metal ship wheel  -  Carefully detailed structures on the deck including windows  -  A scale tied-down lifeboat on the stern of the deck, to mimic the actual Intrepid America's Cup sailboat -  The hull is accurately painted to match the colors of the actual Intrepid America's Cup sailboat.  Look closely on the hull and you can see the individual planks and wood grain - The best quality sails and rigging over all the competition:   In order to hold their shape and obtain higher quality, the sails are slightly starched and higher thread-count fabric is used, similar to that of the actual intrepid sailboat at the time it sailed.  We offer three unique sail materials that are matched to the different eras of model yachts we offer.  Also, additional rigging lines have been added to be more true to the actual Intrepid sail boat. Our Intrepid model sailboat is made with the finest quality woods. Painted by hand to match the actual color scheme of the Intrepid America's Cup sailboat. Intrepid America's Cup sailboat model has Sails fabricated with high detailed stitching.
