She has full headroom in both hulls and everything on the boat has been renewed or replaced in the last five years, including the rigging. Recently completed a 16 day trip from Houston to Cape Coral, Florida in December. We were in heavy seas and storms and winds to gale force both in the canal and the Gulf of Mexico from the Mississippi to Cape Coral. That said the information here is current as that trip in those conditions. The Snow Goose was upgraded to later model specs with the addition of a stainless aluminum arch, additional Stays, heavier rigging and much larger Genoa. It also has a storm gib and a socked Spinnaker. The Arch carries 400 watts of Solar and the Garmin Radar. It can also support a dinghy. Custom stainless aluminum transom was added to support the two outboards. One 2016 Honda 15 4-stroke and one 2012 Yamaha 25 4-stroke. The Honda will push the boat into a 30 knot wind at 5 knots. With fuel consumption at slightly over 1/2 gallon per hour. Using both engines, the top speed is 9 knots. Bottom ground down for new barrier coat of resin, epoxy and bottom paint in last year. The Solar panels charge two deep cycle 12v batteries, which run the fridge and all required anchor or navigation lights all night. Galley was rebuilt and now has new teak and holly countertops, SS stove, Microwave, dual sinks. Water is electric or foot pump. A new 1 ton air conditioning unit was installed plumbed to the master berth and the head. There is a custom boat cover to protect the Cat from heat and weather keeps cabin temps down to ambient. This boat features a Queen size Captain’s berth, with large amount of storage, a full slide out mahogany navigator’s table, and two aft berths fit with single bed size mattresses. Her sails are in good order with a Roller Genny which is 7 years old but has a newer cover. The Mainsail is of unknown age but when sunbrella was added sailmaker said it was in very good shape. Her Boom is a roller reefer but can be used that way or as normal. The genny is a large sail which comes to rear of cockpit as the mainsail on a Prout is small by design, and used more for wind redirection than push. It is rarely needed. All sail controls lead to the cockpit and the boat can be single-handed. - New Teak and holly floor in center nacelle and entry platform to cabin.
- Interior painted.

Rig and SailsAuxilary power, accomodations, calculations. The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more. Classic hull speed formula: Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL Sail Area / Displacement RatioA measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more. SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3 - SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
- D : Displacement in pounds.
Ballast / Displacement RatioA measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize. Ballast / Displacement * 100 Displacement / Length RatioA measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more. D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³ - D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
- LWL: Waterline length in feet
Comfort RatioThis ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more. Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 ) - D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
- LOA: Length overall in feet
- Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet
Capsize Screening FormulaThis formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more. CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64) The SNOWGOOSE started out as the 34/35, was lengthened over time and became SNOWGOOSE 37. This listing is presented by CatamaranSite.com . I bought Jade in May 2017, after spending more than six months searching for an affordable yet blue water capable catamaran. Jade is a 1977 Prout Snowgoose 35 built to Lloyds Standard in the UK. According to the registration she’s 10.36 meters. A length that works well when it comes to paying mooring fees in the crowded Mediterranean, but on recent measurement I found the length to be closer to 10.67m (35′). I suppose it all depends on whether you include the rudders of not. Either way, what’s 30cm between friends. The Snowgoose 35 is a three cabin catamaran by design with additional berths in the saloon. Jade however, has undergone something of a conversion, with the starboard bow cabin being turned into a dressing room, and the forward saloon berth partitioned off and turned into a double ‘owners cabin.’ Compared to vessels like the Heavenly Twins 27 and the Commanche 32, I find it to be a wasteful design, but it does keep the boat nice and compact. In theory, the current layout could sleep five people, six if there is a couple along. In reality, the owners cabin is a true double at 135cm wide, and is the only cabin with standing headroom on entrance. The Port quarter cabin is a decent sized single berth, but is a crawl space. The starboard quarter cabin has been turned into a storage room. Interestingly though, on a passage from Mainland Portugal to Maderia, I did have couple share the port side cabin. Perhaps they hadn’t been together long, or were just cosy sleepers, either-way it did seem to work for them. This really limits the possibilities when searching for crew, or when having guests on board. It is something that I would like to address at some point in the future. Compared to similar vessels, I find the bathroom/head, and galley to be spacious, especially considering that I’m sailing single-handed. I’m sure when cooking for more than a couple of people, or taking turns to shower that the space shrinks dramatically. Still, it’s good for now. The boat was previously owned by a couple who sailed her for around 4 years. It was obviously kitted it out to suit them, but unfortunately some of the design choices leave a lot to be desired. Blue linoleum anyone?! This will be addressed at a later date. Basic specificationsProut Snowgoose 35 Length: 10.36m or (10.72m) Beam: 4.57m Draft: 0.84m Sails: Furling main (13.5m2), staysail, genoa (36m2), symmetric spinnaker Fresh water: 300l (150l per hull) Fuel capacity: 125l Engine: Yanmar 3GM30 (coupled to Sonic drive leg) Electricity: 400w solar panels Batteries: 6 Trojan T-105 (in series giving 675amp/h @ 12v) plus a 100Ah AGM starter battery, and 80Ah windlass battery. In standard trim, Jade weighs in at roughly 3.6 metric tonnes, and while light, she’s not a fast catamaran. The western world was skeptical of multihull boats back in the 60s and 70s, so the Prout brothers, who formerly raced catamarans, set about designing a strong, solid, and most importantly safe cruising catamaran. The result was the Snowgoose 34. At some point someone must have actually measured one, because they later decided to call it the Snowgoose 35 (since the mould was tad over 34′). Later models had solid GRP hulls with a sandwich core deck, but Jade and those before her are solid GRP throughout. That means there’s little need to worry about rotting balsa core and badly sealed deck hardware, which is alway a bonus on boats. Back in the 70s she would have been the height of sophistication, and considered truly blue water capable. After all, these boats were built to withstand a pounding sailing around the British Isles. These days with everything getting larger and heavier, she’s considered by some to be a little small for serious offshore duty, but don’t tell that to the many Prout owners that have successfully and comfortable circumnavigated the globe in safety. Modifications and upgradesI’ve taken something of a laid back approach with regards to replacements and upgrades for the boat. Instead, choosing to enjoy her for what she is at the moment, and get some miles under my belt before considering refurbishment. By the time I’m ready to winter somewhere (possibly Greece), I’ll have a nice long list of items that need repairing, replacing, and upgrading, as well as idea on decor and other items. Dometic Masterflush 7210One item I have changed is the head. The boat came with a standard Jabsco manual toilet. I soon found that having to pump a good 25+ times to properly flush the toilet, was something of a pain. As the waste hose all needed changing anyway, I decided to opt for a Dometic electric fresh water toilet. No more funky smells, blisters, or confused guest. Dometic CFX50Refrigeration on boats is always something of a compromise between space, weight, and power consumption. Jade has an excellent Danfoss compressor built into an under counter unit and very well insulated. Unfortunately it stunk. And despite multiple attempts at cleaning it out, I couldn’t find the root of the problem so set about tearing out the whole unit. This was a bigger job than I initially anticipated, and wanting to get sailing sooner rather than later I opted to seal up the unit, and purchase a Dometic CFX50 portable refrigerator/freezer. At £700, and 20kg, it’s neither light on the wallet or in weight, but it’s probably one of the best portable units on the market. More to ComeI’ll be working on Jade, throughout the summer, while trying various products and upgrading items as and when necessary. When something worthy of sharing comes along, I’ll update the details and list them here. ![catamaran snowgoose 35 ' src=](https://defylife.com/wp-content/litespeed/avatar/656197b873aedf30cd3ac62580f29558.jpg?ver=1720975997) I'm a motorcycle enthusiast turned live-aboard sailor sharing my globetrotting adventures. Thank you to Alan from SV Damn Kiwi for helping us out with this owner’s review of his lovely looking Prout 37 Snowgoose. This model was one of Prout Catamarans ´ best selling boats. Follow them on Instagram at @sv.damnkiwi ![catamaran snowgoose 35](https://www.katamarans.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/53848846_668734640208647_4425154188598185525_n-1024x1024.jpg) Can you tell us a bit about yourself and the boat. Boat name says a lot Damn Kiwi. It’s always been on my bucket list to bring a boat up to Cat 1 NZ and take it offshore, I’ve done a few miles now but haven’t taken my own boat away so the challenge was there. Wanted to do it before getting too old and stuck on the treadmill Why did you choose the Prout 37 Snowgoose? Most of my sailing was on a mono but did a passage on a seawind1250 and spent a few weeks in Tonga just my wife and I, and the cat is such a good platform to live off in cruising mode it was hard to go back. Couldn’t afford to buy most every other cat on the market till we seen the snow goose and this one needed a LOT of work which was reflected in the price(just cost us 4 yrs of our lives that’s all) ![catamaran snowgoose 35](https://www.katamarans.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/52341754_558304131341233_8625978807368075038_n-1024x1024.jpg) When was she launched? Don’t really know but are told 1985 What’s the best thing about her? The fact she fits into a standard marina berth and with the twin screw you feel comfortable handling her in tight spaces What would you change if anything? Walk down transom and a little more headroom in the saloon Is she easy to maintain? With its flat keels and narrow beam it’s nice to haul or beach .Not much woodwork exterior either so yes ![catamaran snowgoose 35](https://www.katamarans.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/50623736_368993810348846_2564714915035010530_n-1024x1024.jpg) Is she easy to sail short-handed? Everything back to the cockpit and with the small main yes easy What’s she like in heavy weather / a blow / big seas Had some reasonably rough stuff on both trips so far and she’s as good as any other 37 ft boat I’ve been on How does she sail in light winds? Haven’t really got the light air sails set up but seems to go alright How does she sail close hauled? Not to bad, about 30 deg apparent which is so so Typically, what’s your average speed on passage? About 6knts couldn’t quite crack the 200mile 24 hr but got close a few times What’s she like under power? Speed, manouevrability? We have twin 27 hp so if you’re hammer down she digs a hole and you’re good for about 7.5 or so but we usually cruise about 5.5-6 on one motor at about 2 litre per hour manoeuvrability with both motors is magic Is she easy to dock, what’s the visibility like? Good visibility and with the low freeboard I don’t think windage is such an issue either, twin screw helps heaps as well What is she like on the hook? We use a bridle and decent ground tackle and she sits nicely Is she comfortable down below? Cabins/saloon/galley/heads We’ve set her up for the two of us and we’re both quite tall and we spent six months living on her without a night off her with different guests at times and didn’t have any issues really, it’s not a large volume boat and it is only 37 ft so with that in mind she’s fan frigging tastic Is she good for hosting guests? We extended the coach roof to back aft of the main traveler to enclose the whole cockpit if we want and give us good shade and we’ve had a heap of people sitting around having a few. I’m hoping they had as much fun as we did having them on board What kind of modifications have you done and why? Stripped out a lot of interior wood and lining, basically to get to the structural stuff we needed to and once we’d finished we just painted it and left it much lighter weight wise and visually. Ran out of time to reinstall as well but probably wouldn’t put it back now anyway Any plans for further customisation? Need to do something with the rub strip join between deck and hull join which is leaking but not really any mods If you were to swap her for another boat, what would that be? Or maybe you wouldn’t swap her? Maybe a little bigger, step down transom bigger volume but with that comes a lot of cost so bang for our buck we probably won’t change her Anything else you would add to help people thinking of buying a Prout 37? I think they’re great value for money. If you keep in mind their size, which when you’re manoeuvring in a marina is one hell of an advantage, the miles they’ve done and easy of sailing. Sure the modern ones have heaps more volume and comfort, but it comes at a hell of a price, and do they look as good? Jury’s out on that, they are a pretty little boat😎👍 - Lagoon Sea Trials

Her proven design employs both traditional Prout innovations and modern construction techniques. The result is excellent performance, responsiveness under sail, spacious accommodations, tremendous load-carrying capacity and ease of handling. Evolved from Prout Snowgoose 35. With over 100 reported circumnavigations completed, you would be hard pressed to find another line with this track record. The 2′ 10″ draft greatly increases the skipper’s anchoring options when storms approach, and makes her ideal for exploring the shallow waters found on the Gulf Coast, the Florida Keys, or the Bahamas. Her pedigree gives assurance she is able to deliver you safely to your destination whether near or far. The interior is well executed with abundant storage and counter space. The liberal use of teak creates a warm and elegant atmosphere not seen on many modern day cats. There are two different possible layouts, so please see below for diagram and more details. The cockpit is roomy yet secure, with excellent visibility from the helm. There is a substantial aft deck behind the cockpit which makes an ideal fishing platform or work area. The solid bridge deck forward offers a large work/lounge area along with additional storage. Specifications | Make: | Prout | Model: | 37 Snowgoose | Length: | 37 | Builder: | G. LENGTH: Traditionally, LOA (length over all) equaled hull length. Today, many builders use LOA to include rail overhangs, bowsprits, etc. and LOD (length on deck) for hull length. That said, LOA may still mean LOD if the builder is being honest and using accepted industry standards developed by groups like the ABYC (American Boat and Yacht Council).
