Marlow Yachts is a luxury motor yacht builder based in Palmetto, Florida. The line of Marlow Explorers are designed by naval architect Douglas Zurn. Kevlar hulls and vinylester resin make Marlow Yachts durable and able to sustain rough sea conditions. Marlow is mindful of chemicals and products used to build yachts; its production facility is the first “green” facility in China, winning the Yachts International Environmental Award.

David Marlow founded Marlow Yachts in 2000; however, the company’s origin dates back to the mid 1990s, when ideas were born and rough sketches were drafted. Marlow’s production facility is located in China. Palmetto, Florida is home to its sales and service headquarters.

Marlow is mindful of all chemicals and products used to build their yachts. They chose to manufacture Kevlar hulls due to their durability to withstand rough sea conditions. Vinylester resins, with epoxy in selected areas, were used to build the Marlow Explorer. Marlow made its debut in the 2001 Miami International Boat Show with its first launch, the Marlow Explorer 65C. Since then, the number of Marlow Explorer models has increased, ranging from 49 to 97 feet.

The Marlow Yacht story begins in 1998 when David Marlow partnered with naval architect Doug Zurn to create the Marlow Explorer 57C, 61C, and 65C. The pair chose a shipyard near Xiamen, China capable of using the RIVAT© (Resin Infused Vacuum Assisted Transfer) build process, a manufacturing method that removes ozone-harming chemicals before they can be emitted into the atmosphere. Marlow Yachts are built to both explore and protect the environment.

With the completion of their first yacht, the Marlow brand was launched in 2000. In 2012, the company purchased the assets of Luhrs Marine, further expanding its portfolio. Founded in 2001 by David Marlow, the son of a Florida boatbuilder, Marlow Yachts is known for its clean, green production practices and its devotion to constructing meticulous, artisan-quality yachts. Marlow builds each yacht to order, a process which allows extensive owner input from beginning to end. Layouts are fully customizable so that no two Marlow yachts are the same. Before its vessels leave the factory, every component is put through extensive testing, from the trim and equipment function to the lightbulbs, as well as a ‘monsoon shower’ that floods the yacht with thousands of gallons of water for several hours to ensure it is absolutely sea ready.

More About Marlow Yachts

The twelfth child of a boatbuilder, David Marlow grew up building canoes for his friends from pieces of roofing scavenged from chicken coops. Marlow Yachts first began as a retirement project – David planned to build a boat for himself and his wife, an endeavour that quickly resulted in several orders from enthusiastic customers. In 1998, Marlow paired up with Doug Zurn, a naval architect from Massachusetts, to produce the first models of the now-legendary Marlow Explorer, and the rest was history. After three years of development, the first Marlow Explorer, a 65C, was launched in 2001 at the Miami International Boat Show, where it was deemed one of the finest yachts ever built by Yachts International Magazine.

Marlow’s commitment to green and socially responsible production methods sets it apart from its competitors. In 2006, the shipyard won the Superyacht Society’s 2006 World Superyachts Award for Environment Policies. Runoff is collected and filtered through two miles of granite and gravel strategically laid throughout the factory; water is recycled and used to irrigate the grounds of the property. Marlow’s proprietary closed-mold fiberglass layup eradicates styrene emissions and ventilation, and water traps contribute to a massive reduction in airborne pollutants in the sheds.

Marlow’s Xiaman, China-based factory is devoted to artisanal production: workers are apprenticed in American and European boatbuilding traditions in order to create the most finely crafted, innovative and seaworthy yachts. Marlow’s intricate tooling process turns out impeccably finished hulls, superior superstructures and beautiful decks. Every component is molded in, from the portlights and hatches to windows and doors, to ensure a smooth, perfect finish and watertight security. One of its most notable suites of models is its fleet of Marlow Explorers, raised pilothouse yachts ranging from neat 49-foot vessels to colossal 100-footers. Other offerings from Marlow include their inimitable Prowler, a range of classic high-performance express cruiser, and the Voyager 76, a new model built to provide unrestricted navigation across any ocean.

Marlow Explorer 49E

The most petite of Marlow’s legendary line of Explorer motoryachts, the Marlow Explorer 49E doesn’t skimp on luxury, rideability or space. Built using a full stack infusion process, the 49E is stronger, faster, light, and more fuel-efficient than its competitors. The flybridge is spacious and comfortable, equipped with a dining table and settee, refrigerator, and grill, this small but perfectly formed yacht is perfect for entertaining an intimate group of friends or family in the well-appointed salon. The bright, cedar-lined master stateroom has plenty of storage. The Marlow Explorer 49E has plenty of liveability potential for its size: take a step down toward the aft and you’ve reached the passageway to the engine room, which has space for a fully equipped-laundry room and freezer. Like all Marlows, the Marlow Explorer 49E features a shapely, streamline duo of Velocijet Strut Keels in from the propellers, ensuring a dragless, smooth ride and makes sharp turns a breeze. Twin Cummins engines allow the yacht to cruise at 19-20 knots, depending on the load.

Marlow Voyager 100

At 100 feet in length, this gorgeous behemoth will appeal to even the most discerning navigators. Designed for open water expeditions, the Marlow Voyager 100 is perfect for long adventures whether you’re sailing the North Pole or the Tropic of Cancer. Unlike the explorers of yore, captain and crew on the Voyager 100 will sail in safety and comfort. Marlow has pulled out all the stops when it comes to safety, equipping the Voyager 100 with an outstanding redundancy system that includes three steering systems, a trio of transformers, six watertight compartments, two John Deere gensets and industrial 165-amp alternators on every main. The interior is laid out with four luxurious, expansive staterooms and a spacious salon. Sumptuous teak finishes represent the intersection of luxury and sustainability characteristic of the brand: Marlow uses naturally felled trees, casualties of wind or lightning, to outfit their interiors. With an enormous capacity for food storage that includes five refrigerators and freezer, the Marlow Voyager 100 can be at sea for weeks on end without stopping for provisions. With a mammoth fuel capacity of 5,5000 gallons and exquisite dual 1,500 horsepower Baudouin engines, the Voyager 100 reaches 19 knots cruising and a maximum speed of 22 knots.

Marlow Prowler 375 Havana

Translating the qualities of Marlow’s larger yachts into some 38 feet, this fast-moving, sleek performance yacht is one of the brand’s most popular models. With speeds of over 50 knots, a robust, ocean-ready hull, and fine teak wood accents, it’s easy to see why. Modeled after the legendary Prohibition-era Florida rumrunners, the Marlow Prowler 375 Havana is a blend of roguish nostalgia and thoroughly modern construction. Its outsized helm is equipped with hi-tech navigation systems, while triple Yamaha outboards on the transom add up to an impressive 900 horsepower, allowing the vessel to reach a cruising speed of over 21 knots, a maximum speed of nearly 40 knots, and a range of 255 nautical miles. This Prowler is perfect for fisherman, decked out with two fishboxes and a 52-gallon livewell in the transom that also doubles as a freezer for the daily haul. You can even fry up your catch in the small but serviceable galley kitchen. But the Marlow isn’t just a day-trip yacht: the seating in the saloon converts to a double bed, making it perfect for weekend getaways or overnight fishing trips.

Marlow Yachts is a semi-custom luxury yacht builder specialising in explorers capable of ocean voyages. In 1998, company founders David Marlow and Doug Zurn searched worldwide for a shipyard and suitable building process and they selected a high-tech shipyard in China.

Marlow’s facility is the Norseman Shipyard near Xiamen, China, which is designed to produce innovative yachts up to 97 feet while using environmentally friendly building processes. The yard boasts 300,000 square feet of manufacturing halls dedicated to creating vessel moulds. The yachts are built using RIVAT© (Resin Infused Vacuum Assisted Transfer), which is a unique closed-moulding system that removes ozone-harming chemicals before they can be emitted.

Marlow-Norsemen Shipyard has over 200 skilled workers and is advanced in workplace health and safety, the treatment of waste, and keeping pollution low. In 2007 it was awarded the first World Yachts Award for Environmental Consciousness.

In 2012, Marlow also bought the assets of U.S. recreational boat builder Luhrs Marine, adding several small recreational boat companies to the company portfolio. The companies are: Hunter Marine, Luhrs and Mainship. At the time of acquisition, Hunter was the largest volume sailing yacht builder in the U.S and was in its 40th year of operation.

History of Marlow Yachts

In 1998, yacht designer David Marlow and naval architect Doug Zurn created the proprietary designs for the Marlow Explorer 57C (17.3m), 61C (18.6m) and 65C (19.8m).

Two years later and Marlow Yachts had become a well-known builder in the industry and saw demand significantly increasing for their ocean going yachts.

In 2001, at the Miami International Boat Show the company’s first long-range cruiser, the Marlow Explorer 65C (19.8m) was introduced. For the shipyard it has been a very popular model. The next evolutionary step for the company was the Marlow Voyager 76 (23.2m), which followed in 2010. One year later the Marlow Explorer 97E (29.57m).

In 2011, David Marlow also bought the historic and iconic Merrill Stevens Shipyard in the U.S with a view to renovation. This is Florida’s oldest shipyard and provides complete service facilities on the east and west coast. In 2013 the Miami-based yard was sold to Rahmi M. Koç, a prominent Turkish businessman.

In 2012, Luhrs Marine was acquired. This U.S based boat builder covers three brands: Hunter Marine, Luhrs and Mainship. More recently, in 2019, Marlow introduced motor yacht ICE as the first of the Voyager 100 (30.48m) series.

Since 2000, Marlow has become one of the worlds most talked about and sought out explorer yacht builders.

The Marlow collection

The full range includes: the Marlow Explorer with models from 49 to 97 feet (17 to 33m); the Marlow Voyager 76; the Marlow Prowler 375 with a classic version, an open deck version and the Havana and, finally, Marlow’s two tenders known as the Sprite and the Gypsy.

The company’s first long-range cruiser, the Marlow Explorer 65C (19.8m) launched in 2001 and has been a very popular model. It is differentiated by the elimination of the need for interior bulkheads, which means that the owner’s layout preferences can be met.

Marlow Voyager 76 (23.2m), which followed in 2010 and is capable of crossing any ocean nonstop with its impressive cruising range. With two and a half decks and four double cabins, she delivers incredibly high speeds for this style of yacht. The 76 Explorer also features high quality solar panels on top of the raised pilothouse to deliver energy to the onboard systems in a cleaner fashion.

A third notable yacht from the Marlow stable is the Marlow Explorer 97E (29.57m). This design was launched in 2011 and features a wide beam with a range of 4,000 miles at nine knots.

Motor yacht ICE is the first of the Voyager 100 (30.48m) models. She was delivered to her owner in 2019 and the interior configuration was designed to comfortably accommodate up to 10 guests in five cabins as well as three crew. ICE cruises at 19 knots and reaches a top speed of 22 knots. The Voyager 100 ICE features an incredibly strong hull and Marlow Yachts promote that customers can traverse the Northwest Passage through to Cape Horn with this model.

The Marlow Yachts Explorer series was born in the late 1990s, the brainchild of Marlow Marine owner, David Marlow, who had for more than a decade owned and operated boatyards in the Sarasota/Bradenton, Florida area.  Soon after launching the Explorer concept, Marlow teamed up with naval architect, Doug Zurn, and shared the design work and  credit with him for the Marlow Explorer 57C, 61C and 65C. The first Marlow Explorer was a 65C model that debuted at the Miami International Boat Show 2001.

Over the years, the range of Marlow Explorers has included models from 49 to 97 feet LOA. Earlier models were built in Taiwan but in more recent years,  Marlow has been producing the Explorers in a modern plant near Xiamen, China.

Marlow Explorers are built on a conventional semi-displacement hull form that enables them to achieve higher top speeds than “classic” full-displacement trawler yachts, provided they are fitted with sufficiently powerful engines. Usually on Marlow Explorers, twin strut-keels are fitted forward of the propellers which themselves are set into semi-tunnels. The set-up is considered by Marlow Yachts to enhance the fluid dynamics of water flowing to and from the propellers. Over the years, Marlow Explorers have been built in raised-pilothouse configurations, sometimes with enclosed flybridges, and occasionally in the larger models with large enclosed “command bridge” configurations on the upper (third) deck.
