These indexes are then used to find usage correlations between slang terms. The official Urban Dictionary API is used to show the hover-definitions. Note that this thesaurus is not in any way affiliated with Urban Dictionary.

Due to the way the algorithm works, the thesaurus gives you mostly related slang words, rather than exact synonyms. The higher the terms are in the list, the more likely that they're relevant to the word or phrase that you searched for. The search algorithm handles phrases and strings of words quite well, so for example if you want words that are related to lol and rofl you can type in lol rofl and it should give you a pile of related slang terms. Or you might try boyfriend or girlfriend to get words that can mean either one of these (e.g. bae ). Please also note that due to the nature of the internet (and especially UD), there will often be many terrible and offensive terms in the results.

There is still lots of work to be done to get this slang thesaurus to give consistently good results, but I think it's at the stage where it could be useful to people, which is why I released it.

Special thanks to the contributors of the open-source code that was used in this project: @krisk , @HubSpot , and @mongodb .

It’s Time to Reconceptualize What “Imposter Syndrome” Means for People of Color

  • Kevin Cokley

slang meaning for motorboat

How racism, bias, and imposter feelings are intertwined.

The recent pushback against the imposter phenomenon in the media has largely focused on how and why it’s inappropriate for people of color. In this article, the author argues that, while there is merit to these arguments, getting rid of the idea entirely for Black students and workers is a disservice. Instead, he recommends reconceptualizing the term to include new research on how imposterism affects people of color, and urges organizations to better understand how racism, bias, and imposter feelings are intertwined.

Over the past few years, there has been increased attention paid to the imposter phenomenon (a.k.a., imposter syndrome) in the media. Its popularity is understandable given that it’s an intuitive, common-sense concept about a tremendously relatable topic: feeling like a phony on the job. It’s also, at least according to recent review of the literature , fairly common: up to 80% of people have experienced imposter feelings.

It's time to sell US Treasurys after an 'excessive' bond-market rally, Barclays says

  • It's time to sell the the 10-year US bond after an "excessive" bond rally, Barclays said.
  • Fueled by rate cut bets, investors have been snapping up the 10-year Treasury in the past few weeks.
  • But a resilient US economy means the case for a "meaningful easing cycle" has weakened.

Insider Today

It's time to sell the benchmark US government bond.

That's according to strategists at Barclays, who say the recent rally in the bond market has probably gone too far.

Staying bullish on rate cuts, investors have been snapping up US bonds in the past few weeks. Yields on the 10-year note have dropped 30 basis points, down from this year's high of 4.35%. The 10-year yield is currently at 4.096%.

"The rally over the last few weeks seems excessive and we recommend shorting 10y US Treasuries," analysts led by Anshul Pradhan and Amrut Nashikkar wrote in a note on Friday.

In fact, the analysts said it's "odd" that investors have been bullish on bonds given the slew of strong economic data supporting rates remaining higher for longer. From GDP to inflation to jobs, multiple readings have surpassed estimates, hinting that the US economy is still too bubbly for the Fed's liking.

"While the Fed still seems to be sticking to its baseline of cuts starting this year, the case for a meaningful easing cycle has weakened in our view raising the risk of the Fed forecasting a shallower easing cycle."

And Barclays is indeed betting on a resilient US economy. Analysts say they think the soft data points are misleading, and that risks are skewed toward the economy surprising to the upside.

That, along with an increase in supply of US Treasurys and a Fed that's trying to shed its portfolio of long-term government bonds, means yields on the 10-year note are likely to rise from here, analysts said.

Investors have been seesawing between ramping up and dialing back wagers on rate cuts this year. Last week jobs report for February contained a mixed bag of data for investors trying to map the path of Fed policy. The number of jobs added to the economy beat expectations, a sign that things are still hot, but unemployment rose after revisions to the prior months' data and wage growth tapered.

What a Trump Presidency Could Mean for Social Security in 2025

A lthough polling shows that few voters long for a presidential rematch, America seems destined for an electoral repeat of 2020, when Donald Trump and Joe Biden were a comparatively youthful 73 and 77.

Whoever wins will serve his second and final term, and the following president won’t be inaugurated until January 2029, just five years before Social Security is set to collide with a funding shortfall that has been decades in the making.

That could give the winner of November’s election an outsized role in the program’s future. Here’s what could be in store for Social Security if Donald Trump becomes the first president since Grover Cleveland to win a non-consecutive second term.

Sponsored: Protect Your Wealth With A Gold IRA. Take advantage of the timeless appeal of gold in a Gold IRA recommended by Sean Hannity.

He Has Vowed To Leave the Program Unchanged

Trump blasted his last primary rival, Nikki Haley, for indicating her willingness to raise the retirement age for today’s younger workers. On his campaign website, he promises to “protect” Social Security and insists he won’t cut benefits or otherwise change the program if reelected.

“In the early 2000s, Trump was on record stating that the Social Security system needs an overhaul and to cut back on funding,” said Colin Ruggiero, co-founder of DisabilityGuidance.org , which provides information and resources related to the SSDI and SSI Social Security programs. “However, in recent years, Trump has said that he will do everything in his power to ‘not touch’ Social Security and leave it the way it is.”

Discover More: Social Security — What Biden’s Updated Payment Plan Means for Your Money

In a Decade, the Consequences of Doing Nothing Will Lead to Something

Haley’s proposal to raise the retirement age is unpopular, but she withdrew from the race on March 6.

“While this may be a sigh of relief for many who need benefits or are close to retirement age, doing nothing could also be damaging to the program as a whole,” Ruggiero said.

That’s because the Social Security Administration (SSA) expects the trusts that fund the program to run out in 2034. When that happens, payroll taxes alone will support benefits, providing enough to fund only 80% of promised payouts.

“Short-term solutions to resolve this issue are either to increase the retirement age, increase payroll taxes or both,” Ruggiero said.

Trump says the fix lies in an alternative solution. During a town hall in December, the former president vowed to increase America’s oil production to come up with the money to plug the looming Social Security shortfall.

He Says He Won’t Raise Payroll Taxes, but Will He Cut Them?

Payroll taxes fund Social Security, with employers and employees each contributing 6.2%. The self-employed pay the full 12.4% tax themselves.

As Ruggiero said, raising payroll taxes is one way to delay the looming Social Security shortfall. Trump insists that won’t happen on his watch, but a look back at his first term indicates that he might go even further by lowering payroll taxes instead of just refusing to raise them.

“A second Trump presidency could introduce several dynamics to Social Security, primarily influenced by his previous administration’s approach to fiscal policies and social welfare programs,” said Dennis Shirshikov, who covers Social Security as an instructor of finance and economics at the City University of New York. “For example, during his first term, President Trump proposed payroll tax cuts as a means to stimulate economic growth.”

Short-Term Economic Stimulation vs. Long-Term Social Security Funding

In 2020, Trump signed an executive memorandum to defer the collection of payroll taxes. The New York Times reported that few companies acknowledged the deferral and that the order had “little to no effect on economic growth.” But if past proposals indicate future policies, permanent payroll tax cuts are on the table if Trump wins a second term.

“While such measures can provide short-term economic boosts, they could also lead to decreased funding for Social Security unless alternative funding mechanisms are established,” said Shirshikov, who is also the head of growth at the real estate investing firm Awning . “It’s essential to consider the broader context of his economic policies, which favored deregulation and tax cuts, potentially increasing the deficit. An increased deficit without a clear plan to support Social Security could put additional strain on the program’s long-term viability.”

Only Previously Scheduled Changes Will Impact the Program in 2025

No matter who wins in November, even the most radical changes the next president might make to Social Security wouldn’t impact the program until at least 2026.

For example, when Trump signed his August 2020 executive order to defer payroll taxes, CNBC reported that he said, “If I’m victorious on Nov. 3, I plan to forgive these taxes and make permanent cuts to the payroll tax.”

The report said Social Security Chief Actuary Stephen Goss warned that permanent payroll tax cuts could deplete the program’s funding by mid-2023. The problem with that is Goss’ calculation presumed the cuts would take effect on Jan. 1, 2021 — but Trump’s second term wouldn’t have started until 19 days later.

The next president will be inaugurated on Jan. 20, 2025, and even if he signs new tax legislation soon after, it would not take effect until the following tax year.

Similarly, the 2025 Social Security cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) will be determined in this year’s third quarter.

Raising the retirement age would be an even slower crawl that would phase in the change starting with today’s young workers. According to the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, the last major increase came from a 1983 overhaul when the full retirement age was 65, and it didn’t reach 67 for those born in 1960 or later until 2022.

So, while a Trump victory won’t affect the program the year he’s inaugurated, his inauguration — or lack thereof — could determine the future of Social Security in the years that follow.

Do you know a "boy mom?" Are you a "boy mom?" Before you answer, you might want to make sure you're caught up on the most recent internet slang.

A recent TikTok post by a momfluencer has been circulating through the platform in the past week, drawing criticism and reigniting the conversation around "boy moms."

The since-deleted video featured a content creator who often shares videos of and centered around her children discussing the difference between her feelings for her young daughter and son. In it, she says that though she is "obsessed" with and loves her daughter, her son "has her heart and soul" because her "whole life, she wanted to be a boy mom" and that her fellow "boy moms" will understand what she's saying.

Other TikTok users were quick to respond, saying the post was inappropriate and could be hurtful to her daughter if she ever stumbled across it, as it appears to make clear that one child is a favorite based upon their gender.

While it has stirred up its fair share of controversy, the video is far from the first and certainly won't be the last to draw out debates surrounding parenting, gender and so-called "boy moms."

What is a 'boy mom'?

A "boy mom" is something of a negative character archetype oft-recognized on the internet. The term itself is slang to refer to a specific kind of parent who is perceived as being overly fixated on their male children, often to the detriment of other female children or people in their lives.

A mother may be called a "boy mom" if she talks about or displays signs of favoring her male children over her female children, expresses a distaste for girl children and enthusiasm for boys based solely on gender, speaks about her son in a way that viewers perceive as being almost romantic, hyper-fixates on her male child's gender and all things "boy," or if she gives special treatment to her sons through coddling and obvious favoritism.

As the internet will quickly tell you, every mom who happens to have male children is not a "boy mom." A mom of boys is a neutral identifier while a certified "Boy Mom" is a mom who displays certain kinds of behaviors or subscribes to certain ideals.

While the term has become popular across social media platforms, it is most often discussed on TikTok, where people often make skits and parodies pantomiming the stereotypical caricature of a "boy mom."

These often cover themes like moms being over-protective and coddling their sons, deciding they can do no wrong even when they're grown adults; moms who treat their sons like their romantic partners, acting as if they're in competition with daughters-in-law and future dates or referring to their sons growing up and leaving home as a "break-up"; moms sharing how they don't love their girl children as much as their boys; and moms who center their lives around being a mom to a boy, often to the point of annoying others in everyday conversation.

Often, conversations about "boy moms" center around implications of emotional incest, misogyny and misplaced emotional attachment.

Where did the slang term 'boy mom' come from?

The term "boy mom" was originally not a negative one, Like "girl dad," it was used by parents to refer to the experience of having a child of a different gender from their own.

In the past, it was used simply by certain moms who had boy children. Often, it was used to describe experiences they felt were unique to having boys, like incidences of roughhousing, toilet issues, or shopping for toys and clothes traditionally marketed toward boys. It was also used by moms of boys simply to express their enjoyment of being a mother to male children.

Over time, however, both the terms "boy mom" and "girl dad" took on an ironic meaning. The types of content posted by self-identified "boy moms" began to share some common themes and tropes, and viral videos that were received poorly by the internet began to surface and be parodied.

As the conversation around parenting and traditional ideas of gender evolved, so did the ideas of these parents who became unduly fixated on or "obsessed" with their children's gender. Eventually, netizens came to associate a certain kind of content and certain kind of behavior with "boy moms." The term soon began synonymous with "cringy" or embarrassing behavior online.

Now, plenty of people still use the term positively, proudly referring to themselves as a "boy mom." Others have come to use the term ironically, as a joke, or even as an insult, depending on where you stumble across it.
