The boaties' paradise just minutes from the hustle and bustle

Burraneer: The boaties' paradise just minutes from the hustle and bustle

Marley Cutbush is happy to go to work.

As a boat broker with the Burraneer Bay Marina Yacht Sales team, he has the good fortune to be based on the waterfront overlooking Burraneer Bay.

“Every time I pull in, I look out over the bay, and every single time I look, it’s different,” he says.

“Whether there’s a southerly blowing, or it’s grey, or it’s a clear, mirror-glass night, it’s a different landscape. I can look across the bay and see all the lights on or see the storms roll in. It’s quite a unique view.”

Only a few minutes away from Cronulla, Burraneer is known for its relaxed lifestyle. Photo: Supplied

Boatie’s paradise

Only a few minutes’ drive from the hustle and bustle of Cronulla, the bay is a magnet for boaties.

Cutbush spent 15 years boating around the world, including several years aboard superyachts and skippering private vessels around Asia but is now more than happy to be home on Burraneer Bay.

“It really is a stunning waterway in so many respects,” he says.

“The water’s so clear. Today there was a seal swimming around the marina; he visits around every month or so. I’ve seen turtles, I’ve seen dolphins, wobbegongs, rays and kingfish coming through.”

Cutbush’s family has a long association with the area: his great-grandfather owned a five-acre block on the Burraneer Point known as Loch Lomond, and Cutbush grew up messing about in boats.

Many Burraneer homes have picturesque water views. Photo: Supplied

Cutbush says boating is key to bringing the local community together.

From the cruisers to the Port Hacking 100 game fishing competition to the putt-putt regatta, which attracts up to 60 small timber vessels, there are events and activities for boaties of all descriptions.

One of Cutbush’s favourite spots is South West Arm, just a few nautical miles south of Burraneer Bay.

“It’s super protected and an extremely deep anchorage with some courtesy moorings,” he says.

“You’re fully surrounded by the Royal National Park, so you can’t see a single house, and it feels like you could be anywhere.”

Highland Property Group agent Mitchell Wynn says the boating lifestyle is definitely the main drawcard for Burraneer Bay residents.

Premium prices

The suburb of Burraneer is dominated by waterfront and water-view properties, and prices regularly tip over $6 million.

The record price for the suburb was secured a year ago when a contemporary Woolooware Road waterfront sold for $9.1 million.

With no high-rise buildings and few shops, Burraneer's residential lifestyle is ideal for those wanting an escape. Photo: Supplied

There’s no high-rise development and only one road into the peninsula, keeping traffic to a minimum.

“Burraneer has great water facilities with the Royal Motor Yacht Club just down the road,” says Wynn.

“There are some boutique shops, a grocer and a bakery as well as two cafes. You’ve got the proximity back to Cronulla without being in the hustle and bustle.”

One to Watch

Beautifully landscaped grounds cascade down to the water’s edge at this deep waterfront gem, which comes with a pool, a gym and a private pontoon.

There are two living spaces, an eat-in kitchen and a study, plus balconies on both levels to take in the views.

Mitchell Wynn of Highland Property Group Sutherland Shire is selling the home with a guide of $6.8 million-$7 million.

Location and contact.

Have been fortunate to visit several times and not been disappointed once! The restaurant is only a small part of this club with a fantastic outlook , good food, friendly service, good drink prices & a laid back happy vibe. Ended up leaving the car... & picking up the next day! Will be back for sure! More

As a republican I normally don't enjoy anything "Royal" but this Club takes a lot of beating. Overlooking the placid waters of Gunnamatta Bay this little Club packs a lot in ! Two levels of bars and good meals from Yachties served throughout it is... a pleasant way to spend a lazy afternoon or enjoy a great evening meal with full service. The outdoor seating is great on a nice day and very popular so get in early for a spot ! Have been here several times at differing times and always have enjoyed the visit. More

Whilst on a road trip from Queensland I returned to the RMYC at Cronulla. This venue and facility was part of my boating interest and activities many years ago. All credit to the current operators and Staff of Yachties, where we found the the menu,... the food and the service to be beyond reproach. All of this coupled with excellent weather and a spectacular outlook made for a very memorable luncheon, so much so we returned again the next day. And it was even better! More

The view of Port Hacking Bay are fantastic but the bistro which is part of the "Royal Motor Yacht Club " needs to offer more than a view. The décor is dated but that is okay but the quality of food which is over priced... is average at best. This added to the lack of atmosphere left my wife and I feeling disappointed . We will not return. More

Very limited menu - cut back a lot since last visit. The menu has not been improved, options just deleted. No vegetable meals.... REALLY? Not good enough. Get with it RMYC! Overpriced and not worth the visit.

Just had the BEST most juicy steak on a last minute early dinner with my husband. Lovely location and good wine list. The air con was a little on the cool side, so next time I will sit al fresco.

Very disappointing fisherman’s basket.Batter was terrible.Should of sent meal back.View is very good.Drinks reasonable

We went to the Royal Motor Yacht Club for dinner with friends. We had a lovely table overlooking the beautiful bay. The menu was quite extensive and there were a couple of lovely dinner specials. My husband had the Atlantic Salmon which he really enjoyed... while I had the most delicious Seafood Linguine. Others had steak, one had the special of the Seafood Chowder Pie. Everyone had a great dining experience. More

Recently joined as a member and this was my first visit to the bistro. Fairly substantial menu.We only had starters as we weren’t that hungry.I can recommend the duck springs rolls or the prawn taco. Some cakes in the display counter looked very inviting. Dining... area overlooks the bay with an adjoining bar to offer beverages at a reasonable price. Yes I would go again. More

Burraneer is one of the most exclusive suburbs in the Sutherland Shire. It is a peninsula that sits between Cronulla and Lilli Pilli, on the edge of the beautiful Port Hacking River.

\Most of the houses in Burraneer are large, freestanding family homes. Many of the houses in Burraneer are waterfronts or have direct water access. Currently, the house median sale price in Burraneer is $3.2 million. The water views, bushland surrounds, and a strong sense of community make Burraneer a highly desirable suburb to live in.

You will find two small sets of shops in Burraneer. On Woolooware Road there is a small supermarket, fruit shop, butcher, bakery, cafe, liquor store, and a few specialty stores. On Burraneer Bay Road you will find a cafe, butcher, and hairdresser. A little further down Burraneer Bay Road is The Burraneer Family Practice, which has been looking after the community for almost 30 years.

Many residents of Burraneer enjoy being on the water. The Royal Motor Yacht Club is a recreational club for sailing and cruising enthusiasts, as well as a great spot for lunch, dinner, and special events. The Burraneer Bay Marina is below the club, where locals moor their boats.

Back on dry land, there are a number of parks to enjoy in Burraneer, the biggest one is Burraneer Park which has a large open field, some bush tracks, and a gated kids playground. Smaller playgrounds can be found on Binaville Avenue and Eurabalong Road.

Burraneer Bay Public School provides education for students from kindergarten through to year 6. It is one of the largest Primary Schools in the Sutherland Shire with approximately 700 students. If you’re looking for private schools there are a few, St Francis De Sales Primary School for kindergarten through to year 6, Our Lady of Mercy College is a girl’s high school for students from year 7 through to year 10 and De la Salle Catholic College is a co-ed high school for year 11 and 12 students.

The closest train station to Burraneer is Wooloware on the Illawarra / Cronulla line. There is also a bus service that runs through the area also servicing nearby suburbs including Miranda, Cronulla, and Sutherland.

Did you know?

There are a few lesser-known beautiful beaches on the Port Hacking River that you access by a trip to Burraneer. Bulls Beach can be visited by an entry on Lugarno Avenue. Bell Place Beach can be accessed through a public pathway between numbers 5 and 7 Bell Place.
