Tortured Plywood

The name 'tortured ply' certainly carries a negative ring. But within the limits of the system, that need not be so. The 'torture' comes from the fact that plywood is being bent more than is normal on a small boat and this is more safely achieved with the help of hot water applied to the outer veneers. Because plywood bends more readily at 90 degrees to the grain, it is used in that manner and for each half, the bend at the middle of the boat length will closely resemble a quarter-arc of a circle. So if two flat sheets are first attached together along their long edge, then the combined panel can be curved up to formed a shape close to that of a semicircle.

Claims that this 'torturing' will permit compound curvature are not strictly correct as only the very exterior wood fibres are affected by the damping—but still, such forming can certainly be more extreme that what one commonly experiences with dry plywood.

This semi-circular form lends itself admirably to long slim catamaran hulls, that do not depend on their individual shape for stability. (So by implication, it is therefore NOT suitable for monohull kayaks or canoes that need a tighter, more outboard bilge curve combined with some flat-of-bottom.)

The beam of any catamaran hull intended to be built using tortured ply, will depend on the thickness and type of plywood to be used. One of the most flexible of the marine plys is Okoume or Gaboon, so we will first consider working with that.

So just how far can you bend ply before it fails? Woods vary so much that it's hard to predict exactly, but let's have a shot at it. If we are talking about the recommended okoume marine ply , then from tests, I've found it can be bent in its easiest way (perpendicular to the grain) to a radius of about 300 × t², (with t in inches) and about 500 × t² if bent parallel to the grain.

By soaking the outer skins, I think it would be possible to use these figures for practical use for a tortured ply boat and if we also assume that we're to have a semi-circular section, then the minimum possible beam would equal 600 × t².

So based on the above formula, here is a rough graph of what 'minimum beam' you probably need to accept for a semicircular hull, plotted against each specific thickness of plywood. Each sheet will no doubt vary slightly from these test figures and plys of ⅜" and thicker are likely to be proportionally stiffer as the wetted surfaces will affect a lower percentage of the total plywood thickness, but the graph can still be a good starting point.

plywood catamaran hull

However, if you are using denser plywood (such as a meranti or equal), you'd have to increase these figures by about 50% and with Douglas Fir plywood, I am not sure I'd even try it as it splinters too easily and is typically full of surface flaws.

plywood catamaran hull

The most famous use of tortured ply is probably its original use to construct hulls for the lightweight 'Tornado' catamaran. In 1979, using 4.5mm ply for the hulls, she outperformed all the other B-class competition, to then be selected as a new Olympic Class - still raced today. Although the method is still used by some today, the actual Olympic boats are now honeycomb sandwiched in graphite. The tortured ply system is more difficult to build to exact dimensions. Here is a picture from the original building manual. More details on how a Tornado hull can be created, can be found online at: www.instructables.com

There is also an interesting article on line about a builders experience making Tornado hulls using tortured ply. http://www.ptwatercraft.com

You'll note that the interior is lightly glassed and a foam/glass stiffener is incorporated into the forward ½ of the hull about ½ way down the hulls. The picture (above left) is from Gougeon's fine boatbuilding book.

The process is to first attached the two side sheets together and then, after soaking the part of the ply requiring the most curve, to curve up the sides with the help of ratchet straps until the deck edge can be fitted into a pre-built deck jig. This will considerably help to control the final shape and once the gunwales and any bulkheads are fitted, the hull is reasonably stable in shape. Once totally dry, the thin skin can be epoxied and even lightly sheathed for additional stability and strength.

plywood catamaran hull

Some claims have been made that tortured ply hulls have poor shape and 'plunge through waves' etc. but this depends on what they are used for and the Tornado example is a proof that some can work very well. The two ends can be very differently formed and that helps considerably to control pitching.

plywood catamaran hull

As far as using the system for larger boats, it's seldom been done. One could consider using two layers of thin ply to get a better shape through smaller radii or the chart above indicates that a 5-ft beam hull could be made with 5 ⁄ 16 " ply and if heavily sheathed for strength with FG cloth and added stringers, this could conceivably work for a trimaran main hull—though in such a case, it would be a design more for space than for speed. Depth could be added with an additional strip of ply joined with a 3–4" butt-strap located under a stringer.

plywood catamaran hull

  • The system is simple, inexpensive and quick.
  • The only building frame or jig is really the deck frame.
  • Boat section shapes are very limited. The ply will bend to create close to a ½ circle bilge at the stern.
  • The ply panel will be under some stress for quite a long time and this can make it more susceptible to damage if further stressed or impacted.
  • To help deal with the stress, examples of this concept beyond that of a beach cat, will really require fibreglass sheathing and this will add weight and cost.
  • The bow shape is very fine and with some designs, may not give enough buoyancy to resist pitch poling.

Plywood Catamaran – Frames I am considering a Cat 8-9 m long to be made by plywood. I am searching a site with a construction description of such a Cat. Namely I would like to know: - Type of Plywood used - Thickness for underwater and above water plywood parts. - Kind of wood for the frames (Hull and Bridgedeck). Plywood or timber and what kind of timber. -Dimensions of the Frames in plywood or timber (spacing, thickness, web). -The total weight of the particular Cat. Am I asking too much? Thanks for any reply. APP

You are asking for construction plans. You usually get partial information only for free. The plans are a small fraction of the total cost and the worst part to save money on.

Gonzo hit it on the head. Buy a set of plans. Everything you asked for is the design of the boat. Pay money to get the knowledge of an expert, or even someone whos boat has held up. You can't really afford to go forward with less than complete information - it costs too much to fix something later. You save in the end. Richard Woods is a good place to start. Go to http://www.duckworksbbs.com/plans.htm for another selection of designers and boats.

i have ordered Kurt Hughes (google his name) vhs and now on dvd. although i suggest you copy the dvd on your hard drive before it shows defects ... i have to get my vhs out of the garage ... (i dont know if he can send it via email) . this will give you a good idea of the cylinder mold technique. Very informative, it will give you a feel for what you can and cant do. There are other videos on youtube. Erik Lerouge designs are also being praised by a boat builder who built a large cat in epoxy/ply. You may be suprised at the prices for okoume in china 3mm x1200 mm x 2400 mm BS stamped, but you need to buy a container, unless you find a cobuyer who is interest also. I am in the budgeting process for a 60 ft long catamaran (ply/epoxy) i will need aproximately 1000 sheets of ply , i would need to explain what i want to do but 3 x 3 mm is pretty much what i plan to do for the vertical walls (with bulkheads and stringers) and reinforcements at the in-water sections. Cyl Mold is a very fast way of bldg a multihull. For Motivation on wood boats , check multihull mag article (april/may no 152) on James Wharram. I have nearby access to Gurit products (check their web site) i would like to at least buy stuff from them as good neighbor friend, their epoxies , galls, carbons, corecell, etc products are well knowned. I am considering Awlgrip and Alexseal paint systems but the trendy vinyl wraps are getting my attention for outofwater surfaces. Kind of fun and easy to apply (check on youtube).
Gurit sells eglass, not galls ... !!! fingers tired.
Thanks for the replies. Well, I do not think that the thickness of the plywood used is a professional secret. In several cases, I have seen the most used plywood is okoume', For cats 8-14 m, the bottom thickness is usually 18 mm, hull sides 12 mm, walls deckhouse 9-12 mm, bridgedeck floors 12-18 mm. Frames (Hulls+Bridgedeck) either hardwood timber oak, beech, etc. up to 40-50 mm thick or plywood 18 mm using shorter spacings and depending on the structural strength study. In several circumstances plywwod thicknes is added, e.g. to get a 12 mm sheet you may add 2x6 mm sheets. If you find different thickness dimensions or disagree with the above, please post them here. It is good to collect a variety of opinions. Thanks Regards APP
Thanks for the inputs, depending on the scarph or not. If all edges are scarphed, it will behave like a one piece ply. Holes and openings will also dictate the reinforcements. Those thickenesses are also what i hear and heard sailing on ply cats. I would prefer 4 x 3 mm for a total 12 mm with stagered joints or even better some spiral depending on the shape of the hulls. Glass and carbon hybrid reinforcements can be a cost / strength ratio better deal. Elongation factors are to be considered in longer units. I find that if it is not for racing, but still give a good ride, light wood like okoume is interesting at 8 pounds per sheet ... i am inclined to build up a multiply beam rather than adding hard wood (another type of wood and wood behavior) , i have teak and ply on my sailboat but not for the same purpose. Okoume has a poor rot performance check on Noah's boat supplies , they have comparisons if i recall correctly. Noah's is in Canada but plys come from all over, you can consider Greece ply manufacturers heard good comments. Chinese plys are cheap but you may have to buy more for rejects and research for a better manufacturer. My design will be very different from the usual, i lean toward the lighter structures and use 32ft twin masts and kites which are in my opinion a good compromise power/weight/fun/cost/felxibility . Have you checked out Kurt Hughes web site ? It is a must in my opinion. I will build my cat in modules, it will fit in container(s) and can be stored in a 3mx12mx2,4 m garage, the demasting will not require a crane and furnitures will be built with okoume as spare parts for repairs. Most everything will have to have double use, the least amounts of sit and be heavy stuff onboard.

APP, you've jumped to several assumptions and we all know what this usually turns out like. You can assume you observations are correct and have a pig or you can do the calculations and have a nice preforming craft that falls within the scope of your SOR. Judging by your questions, you haven't the foggiest idea about scantlings (hence the inquiries), nor the engineering and calculations necessary to extrapolate them, again within the realm of your SOR. Given this, you have three choices, guess and hope for the best (good luck with that) or buy a set of plans where the calculations have already been preformed or lastly, spend a few years studying structural engineering and hydrodynamics. If you elect to just "go for it" you'd be wise to fine tune you scantlings "observations" in regard to the craft you've looked at. Your remarks about "typical" multi hull scantlings aren't even close frankly, so it would be best to stay very closely to known build schedules. Buying plans would be the logical route.

http://sailingcatamarans.com/satmatlist.htm Mr Woods Saturn materials list. Freely available online. There you go. Several others in the same size range on his site. Those are typical for that size boat. Mr Hughes probably goes thinner because he uses cylinder moulding or tortured ply, unsheathed boats might go up a size. If your trying to design your own boat please be careful. Sailing is dangerous and it'd be a pity to kill yourself or people you care for. Mr Woods, Mr Waller and others offer good plans at good prices and excellant backup service while you build. Have fun.

The problem you have is that you don't have enough knowledge of boat design to understand the answers we are giving you. The dimensions of the construction materials are called scantlings. They vary enormously depending on the structural design and the type of material. A pine frame needs to be larger than an oak one. However, it doesn't scale directly, but depends on the application. For example, holding power for fasteners may be important. If it is a local stiffener, like in a large deck panel, a soft wood may be more appropriate. Plywood planking will depend on the framing. A hull with light or no framing will need a thicker skin.

Coral Sea 25 by Mike Waller Yacht Design

25 ft plywood 'v' hull low cost cruising catamaran.

URL: http://wallerdesign.com.au/cs25.html

Description:

The CORAL SEA 25 CATAMARAN is designed specifically for the builder who wants the maximum boat for minimum cost and building time. To this end the vessel features seperate hulls connected by strongly mounted cross beams.

The vessel is demountable for trailing and employs a simple, easily built, trunkated 'V' hull shape. The trunkated 'V', is as simple to build as the straight 'V', but has better sailing characteristics, such as less wetted surface, better tacking etc. This yacht is definitely a case of the most boat for the least work and cost.

The Coral Sea 25 is designed for safe, comfortable family sailing, with bunks for 4 in 2 seperate hulls. It also has a room for a portable toilet, small cabin lockers, and a huge cockpit for socializing. There is good sitting headroom in the hulls.

For simplicity and ease of construction the hulls consist of a plywood shell wrapped around a framework of plywood bulkheads and timber stringers. This is still the easiest way to construct a timber boat, and when combined with timber / epoxy construction, is a very cost effective way to build a sound vessel.

The rig is a simple but efficient ¾ sloop, with a large sail area for light weather cruising, easily reefed in heavier winds. The rigidly mounted beams allow the vessel to carry an efficent rig which can stand up to the weather. The rigging is as simple as possible, and is based on the KISS principle. Two separate rigs are available, a standard rig for offshore and open water sailing, and a larger inshore rig. The choice is at the builders discretion.

Auxiliary power is from an outboard in a separate pod beneath the cockpit footwell. The vessel features small skeg keels for cruising simplicity, and efficient transom hung rudders for positive helm control. Steering as designed is by tiller. The Coral Sea 25 is an easily constructed vessel capable of providing it's owners with years of comfortable and fun cruising, or even ocean voyages for the more skillful and adventurous sailors.

Construction: Methods & Results

Detail photos.

The hulls are built from marine grade mahogany plywood.  The 1/8" thick skins are epoxied over a frame of bulkheads and the skeg made from 3/8" plywood.  The hulls are held together with epoxy only, not fasteners required!  To see detailed photos of the hull building process see the photo section below.

Carbon & Fiberglass Spars:

The carbon fiber spars (masts and crossbeams) and fiberglass spars (boom, yard, slave bar, rudder arms 7 tiller) were all circular in cross section so they were relatively easy to make using the following procedure shown to me by my friend and fellow cat sailor Steve Bellavia.

plywood catamaran hull

This process requires a long pole set on a rotating motor to act as the mold for the spar.  The outer diameter of the pole becomes the inner diameter of the spar.

  • Choose a pole (copper tubing or similar material) of the appropriate diameter and length for the tube you want to make.  It must be stiff enough no to flex under it's own weight or else you will get wrinkles in the final part.
  • Support the pole at each end in a way that allows it to roll easily (two wheels mounted next to each other work well).  One end must be connected to a motor so that the pole can be rotated at about 1 revolution per second.

pole_setup.jpg (2818756 bytes)

  • Using small pieces of scotch tape, tape a layer of paper to the pole (this will make is possible to slide the spar off the pole when it's cured).
  • Now tape a layer of plastic (polyethylene film from McMaster works well) over that to keep the epoxy from soaking into the paper and sticking to the pole.
  • Cut the cloth (fiberglass of carbon fiber) to the desired length and width (the width of the material and the pole diameter will determine the final tube thickness).
  • Turn on the rotation and paint a thin layer of epoxy over the plastic sheet.
  • Turn off the rotation and lay one edge of the cloth along the wetted pole (wrap it around enough so that it doesn't fall off - the smaller the pole the harder this is).
  • Begin painting on epoxy over the cloth to wet it out.
  • Manually rotate the pole so that more cloth is wrapped around it and wet out the newly wrapped cloth with more epoxy.
  • Continue to repeat this until all of the cloth is wrapped around the pole.
  • Now turn on the rotation and use a squeegee to remove excess epoxy and tighten the wrap of the cloth around the pole.
  • Leave the pole rotating until the epoxy is cured.
  • When cured, you should be able to slide your new spar off the pole.

To save weight the rudders are hollow made from the same 1/8" plywood as the hulls.  Building them was surprisingly easy thanks again to Steve's advise and a little testing.  The rudders are made from 2 skin pieces (one for each side), one rectangular piece of basswood running down the middle and one hardwood dowel near the leading edge.  The rectangle and dowel do a nice job of turning the two flat skins into a foil shape.  Forming the rudders requires a jig/clamping system to hold all the parts of the rudder together while the epoxy cures.  A 12" test section I made first and a sample drawing of the rudder construction is shown below.

rudder_drawing.jpg (80153 bytes)

Process plan:

  • Cut skins to the proper size.
  • Now to make the trailing edge nice and sharp, you will need to clamp the two skins down on top of each other with the long edges parallel but offset a small distance (for the chord length I used I needed 1 1/4") and sand the edge down until the edges of both skins are flush with one another (just like sanding to make a scarf joint).  When you are done, the surface you sanded will fit together to form the trailing edge of the foil.
  • Epoxy coat inside surfaces because you can't do it once the rudder is together!
  • Get inner rectangle (5/8" x 1") and dowel (3/8" diameter) and epoxy coat.
  • Build jig/clamps shown below.  The ones in the middle squeeze the skins down over the rectangle and dowel and the ones on each end hold the rectangle and dowel in place.

rudder_jig.jpg (259802 bytes)

  • Epoxy parts together with jig.  The wooden clamps I made are spaced about 12" apart and screwed together.  To clamp the portions of the skins that are between the wooden clamps, use some stiff block of wood and regular clamps in the leading and trailing edges and use plastic strips to keep them from sticking to the rudder.  You may also need to staple the skins to the inner rectangle to get a good bond.

plywood catamaran hull

  • Fill in Leading edge with epoxy and filler of your choice (saw dust is good if you will use a clear finish on the rudders).  Hint: the easiest way to fill the leading edge is to slop on epoxy with filler and then cover the whole edge with a single sheet of plastic that will hold the epoxy in place as it cures.  When it's cured you just sand it flush with the skins.
  • Sand leading edge round and smooth and the trailing edge straight and sharp.
  • Cut rudder at top and bottom to desired length and shape.
  • Drill the pivot hole for the rudder oversized through the inner rectangle.  Then you can fill that with epoxy  and drill it out again to the correct size so that the pin rotates on a nice epoxy surface instead of wood.
  • Cut out and epoxy small skins over top and bottom to seal ends and sand smooth.
  • Now you're ready to finish your rudders with epoxy and vanish/paint.
  • Don't forget to Install some drain plugs so you can get water out if it manages to get in!

Catamarans and Trimarans

Catamaran and Trimaran Boat Plans make it a reality to build your own catamaran or trimaran. Multi-hulled sailing vessels are a special class of boat. A very different mind set is required when thinking about sailing a multi hull, let alone getting your head around building one.

There are some unique challenges building a multi-hull sail boat, the extra beam added by each hull for instance can create storage issues while under construction. Hartley boat plans make the build process straight forward for even amateur builders. However with all things considered, building a multi can be an amazing journey.

James Wharram: Lifetime Achievement Award

A special award was presented to James Wharram for a 'Lifetime Achievement' as Pioneer catamaran builder - sailor and multihull designer.

James Wharram - British pioneer of the modern catamaran

About James Wharram

In the mid 50's, based on his research into ancient Polynesian boat design, James Wharram built the first off-shore Catamaran in Britain and sailed it out into the Atlantic. While the world's yachting community still did not accept such a design as a worthy sea-going vessel, James was landing his 23'6" 'Double Canoe' called TANGAROA in Trinidad in the West Indies.

There he built a second 40' Polynesian style Catamaran, RONGO, and in 1959 sailed it up to New York and back to the UK accompanied by two German women - being the first to sail a catamaran West-to-East across the North Atlantic. These amazing Trans-Atlantic crossings and the follow up book ' Two Girls, Two Catamarans ' have etched the name 'James Wharram' into the annals of yachting history.

Since then, James Wharram has been designing, building and sailing offshore catamarans longer than any other multihull designer. James was a 'hands-on' designer having, over his lifetime, built personally many of the prototype designs. These prototypes were built in the open, in barns, workshops and all the range of building sites available to self-builders, in a variety of climate types from northern European to the Tropics. James was often referred to as a 'Living Legend' or as written in 'Yachting Monthly' in January 2006: "James Wharram is considered by many to be the father of modern multihull cruising."

James’ last achievement was his autobiography published in 2020 as ' People of the Sea ', which he wrote in conjunction with his design/life partner Hanneke Boon. James died in December 2021 at the age of 93. The design business is carried on by his co-designer Hanneke Boon .

On 23 July, a motley fleet of self-built catamarans gathered off Cornwall to give James and Ruth Wharram their final escort. It was a fitting farewell to a legend. The ashes of James and Ruth Wharram were consigned to the sea to be carried by the ebb current out to the open ocean.

A Living Legend Lives No More

James Wharram

We are very sad to announce that on the 14th December James Wharram left this earthly world, joining Ruth, Jutta and his many close friends that departed before him. At 93 years old his spirit has set out on the voyage to sail the oceans of heaven.

WALLER 1200 CATAMARAN

Designed by Mike Waller

W1200_03.jpg

The WALLER 1200 is a full bridge deck cat built in cedar strip/glass composite and plywood. She is an (almost) all plywood version of our 1160 catamaran, with only minor styling changes to accomodate the extensive use of plywood (the 1160 is all strip plank / composite construction). The design features rounded bilges for the hull undersides, and mini keels for cruising simplicity and lower cost, with inboard diesel sail drive engines for safety, convenience and reliability. Extra care has been taken in the design process to make her look like a moulded boat, even though she is plywood.

L.O.A.                                  12.00 Mtrs

L.W.L.                                  11.87 Mtrs

Beam                                     6.50 Mtrs

Draft                                      1.00 Mtrs

Displacement                         6500 Kg

Hull Length / Beam                    11.2:1

Sail Area                        81.4 Squ Mtrs

Payload (Ave)                         1000 Kg

Payload (Max)                        2000 Kg

Headroom (avg)                      2.0 Mtrs

Bridgedeck clearance           0.86 Mtrs

Note# All displacement and payload weights above are as per designed plan, and cannot be guaranteed.

CONCEPT The Waller 1200 is intended to be easy to build but at a lower cost than the 1160, and capable of living aboard and ocean voyaging. Because she is intended for extensive live aboard cruising, she has been designed for strength, load carrying ability and internal roominess. She is designed for safe but good performance rather than all out speed, Displacement, at 6.5 Tonne, is medium displacement for a vessel of this size and type. RIG The Waller 1200 comes with a medium tech fully battened sailing rig and alloy mast and boom as standard. The rig is the typical heavy roached, fully battened main and 7/8th rig which time has shown to be the most efficient rig for this type of vessel. CONSTRUCTION The Waller 1200 utilises what I like to think of as 'sensible' material choices, using the best material for each application. The rounded hull bottoms are cedar strip and glass composite for strength, to a point just above the waterline, and from there on up is all plywood construction for the hulls, bridgedeck, deck and cabin structures. The internal joinery structures are in honeycomb / glass panels for ease of constructin and light weight, but can be plywood for a small weight penalty. Full use has been made of timber / epoxy construction, with a minimum of timber framing. ACCOMMODATION The Waller 1200 accomodations have been optimised for a cruising couple, with a large master cabin featuring a queen size berth, plus a guest cabin, also with a queen size berth. The main living area features a large W.C. area to port, a large and spacious saloon cabin, and a huge and very workeable galley to starboard. Engines are isolated in their own engine rooms aft, with seperate access from the cockpit walk throughs.

pershing 115 yacht

yachting/images/magazine/2005/122005/fea_pershing_525x350.jpg

It takes something very special to impress the jilted residents of the exclusive French town of St. Tropez. Years ago we brought this depot for the rich and famous to a standstill arriving with Virgin Atlantic Challenger II, but we had just set a record across the Atlantic. Sprinting into the port with the striking new, 40-knot Pershing 115 did not quite have the same impact, but this beautiful yacht did stop onlookers in their tracks as they stood and stared.

With the 115, Pershing joins a select band of boatbuilders who are going over the 100-foot mark, taking a quantum leap from the 88-foot former flagship design. This yacht has twice the volume of anything Pershing has ever built. Moreover I was on the first hull and for a prototype design they have done a really superb job of meeting their design and perfomance goals.

Pershing boss Till Antonelli is justifiably proud of the 115. “We knew there was a market out there for a larger Pershing and I think we took a bold step in making the jump straight from 88 to 115 feet. The result is there for all to see and it is a tribute to our new factory and the people who work there, Antonelli says.

The power behind this monster is a pair of 16 cylinder MTU diesels from the 4000 range that produce 3,700 hp each. These engines are huge and they seem to stretch forever along the engine compartment. They are coupled to ZF gearboxes and then the drive goes to KaMeWa water jets in what proved to be a very smooth power train. The water jets are unique in that the inlet ducts of the jets are an integral part of the hull molding which gives a better water flow to the impellers and improves their efficiency.

The two diesels have ample space between them and you see the reason for this when you look aft and see the molding in place for a third water jet. This gives the option to install a centerline TF50 gas turbine to bring the total power up to 13,000 hp. Now you are talking real excitement, and this installation is planned for the next unit that is already under construction. Look for speeds of over 55 knots from this second yacht, speeds that are squarely situated in the Pershing performance territory.

Access to the engine compartment is via a door in the cockpit which leads first to an auxiliary room with the switchboard, watermaker and air conditioning. Forward of this are the crew’s quarters and galley. Stairs lead up from the galley directly into the saloon, close by the dining table, and there is also a dumbwaiter for larger trays. The galley is fitted with all you need for sophisticated meal preparation and the styling, even in these working areas of the yacht, is a close match to the stunning guest areas.

Back aft, the swim platform that protects the water jets is bigger than the average sportsboat. Stairs lead up on both sides to the cockpit, and between them is the garage for the Zodiac tender together with its launching crane. You don’t need to skimp on the water toys on this yacht because there is a second garage that is revealed by raising part of the forward coach roof, housing two jet skis with another launching crane.

The 115 is full of more surprises and one of them comes from opening the door on the right of the saloon entrance. Here there is a stairway winding up to a very private sun deck sitting above the pilothouse. I was trying to determine why there was no sunroof on this yacht similar to those found on other Pershings-this sun deck was the reason. There is another, more public sunpad in the cockpit together with settees and a table, but the upper area is going to be everybody’s favorite.

The sliding saloon doors make an impressive entrance and walking into the saloon takes your breath away. There is none of the rich wood panelling so often found on superyachts, but here the designers have created a beautiful and light, almost minimalistic area with only the dining chairs and the blue leather locker fronts providing color. The settees are white leather, the woodwork a very pale gray-tinted ash, and the sides and overhead a very pale cream.

Quality is enhanced by integral modern artwork above the entrance door and on two of the side window pillars. The relaxing lounge area is aft and a dining table for 10 is forward in a open plan arrangement. Forward at the helm there are three imposing adjustable seats that create what looks like an altar to high performance.

The captain sits in the center chair, which is flanked by the engine and jet controls fitted into the armrests. Here he is master of all he surveys and he really can play tunes with the sensitive machinery controls. In front of him there are seven screens that provide all the information needed for high speed navigation and control, plus sophisticated monitoring systems. The latter have been specially developed by Pershing to control and monitor everything on board except the main engines. The engines have their own MTU dedicated displays and there is a separate display for monitoring the water jet. Large Simrad radar and chart displays provide a full picture of the navigation scene.

A couple of steps down from saloon level takes you into what is virtually a private cinema. Wide lounging settees and chairs face a big flat screen that can be fed from video, DVD or cable or satellite TV. This will be a popular evening relaxing area. Another stairway takes you to the staterooms where the layout is about the only conventional thing on this yacht: a master, a VIP and two twin cabins.

These are all decorated in a similar minimalistic style but with strong colors added through the leather bed bases, the mirror trims and the bright silk bed covers. The result is both modern and restful, with the spacious master stateroom occupying the full beam and featuring an angled bed and deep side windows to give natural light. The VIP stateroom in the bow is almost semi-circular in shape and large enough to have its own settee.

The heads have the same pale gray wood and modern fittings, including hemispherical glass basins. The soles here are wood but have metal strip inserts to give good grip when wet. The extravagant quality of the master stateroom can be seen in the fitting of his-and-her heads for the use of the owners.

The interior of this yacht may be stunning but it is the exterior styling that really sets the scene. The hull has the navy blue and silver combination that was pioneered by Pershing and has since been copied by many. This color scheme complements the series of rising curves that forms the superstructure and, like so much about this design, everything looks well integrated. The practical aspects of the design have been well thought out in most areas, but you only really appreciate the true quality of this yacht out on the water at speed.

We ran the 115 from Cannes to St.Tropez, which is a well-worn path for fast motoryachts. You appreciate one of the qualities of water jet drive with the very delicate maneuvering that is possible with this big yacht. Despite her size you can inch her forward or sideways delicately close to the dock, yet she will spin like a top when you need a quick response. It takes some skill and familiarity with the controls to get to this level of control but the effort is well worthwhile.

Out at sea the response is immediate and thrilling. The thrust from the jets powers the yacht onto plane and keeps it accelerating right up to its terminal velocity. The lack of vibration is impressive, and steering control is delicate and precise when you switch from the steerable joystick controls to the wheel steering. For trim adjustment, the 115 uses the latest interceptor system rather than trim tabs and these give an immediate response that reduces the adjustment period.

On our run down to St.Tropez we had a race with the TGV high-speed train along the coast. The train won that one, but there was no doubt we were fastest on the water that day. Pershing has found just the right balance in this yacht. This design has all the style you want to impress others, both inside and out, yet this is combined with very comfortable living on board. As for performance, 40 knots will meet most requirements but if you want to outrun everything on the water then you can always invest in the gas turbine option. Then maybe, you might even beat that train.
