Blairgowrie Yacht Squadron (BYS) is excited again host the Petersville Regatta for 2023. Historically, the Petersville Regatta attracted keelboat owners from surrounding yacht clubs and was held from 1981 – 1990 before the race was combined with Geelong Week. Successful boats who featured in the historical race include Shambles and Dry Reach skippered by R.Hick and subsequently G.Matthews, both of whom were the most successful boat competitors during the history of the event.
The Petersville Regatta is fondly remembered as a ‘ spectacular event’ and the ‘ social highlight’ of the season. We welcome all keelboat skippers and crews to participate in bringing back a terrific tradition.
The following excerpt is taken from “The Miracle at Scotts’ Shed” book by Edgar French published in 1983.
‘’Over the 1980s and 1990s the Petersville Regatta (sponsored by Sleigh/Golden Fleece, and later Nissan) was a spectacular event on the water and the social highlight of the BYS year. The regatta, held over a week, with five races, was a highlight of the Port Phillip racing season. The final two races were a passage race from Melbourne to Blairgowrie and the final race starting at Portsea and finishing at Blairgowrie.
The start at Portsea was a grand event, and the social activities at Blairgowrie were memorable occasions. BYS catered for up to 650 dinners in the evening after the regatta in the early years.
BYS continued its excellent association with the regatta until 1995, when it was the Nissan Regatta.’’
‘There is no doubt that the day at Blairgowrie has become a very special annual event for a great number of keelboat and trailable sailors from other clubs, and the way in which BYS sailors are received in those clubs certainly has something to do with their enjoyable experiences at Blairgowrie’
– Commodore Frank Paine, 1992

Blairgowrie.
Blairgowrie is a residential suburb and beach resort on the Mornington Peninsula, 64 km south of central Melbourne. Situated between Rye and Sorrento, Blairgowrie has beaches on Port Phillip Bay and on Bass Strait, although the latter includes several rocky headlands.
In common with Rye and Sorrento, Blairgowrie was the site of lime production for the Melbourne building trade from the 1850s. Locally extracted lime was burnt and transported across the bay.
During the 1860s, Charles Duffy, a parliamentarian with Irish forebears, built a holiday house at Sorrento. In 1872 another parliamentarian of Irish background, Michael O'Grady, built a holiday house at Sorrento east (now Blairgowrie). O'Grady's house, built of local limestone masonry in an Italianate design, was acquired by Dr John Blair in 1876 and named Blairgowrie. There was a succession of owners, and during the 1920s-40s Blairgowrie house hosted elegant gatherings before conversion to a guest house.
Until the 1940s Sorrento east's other properties were mainly a few farms, an abattoirs and a store. There were some early postwar subdivisions and in 1947 the name Blairgowrie was given to the local post office. In 1952 the Blairgowrie yacht squadron was formed by a breakaway group from the Sorrento yacht club, and the growth of the club and its facilities put Blairgowrie on the map.
Blairgowrie has a small shopping centre, a community centre, a Uniting church, a motel, a caravan park, a sports reserve, some foreshore camping and a jetty near the yacht club.
Blairgowrie House is listed on the Australian and Victorian historic buildings register.
There is a foreshore reserve along the bay and a wide reserve, part of the Mornington Peninsula State park, running from Point Nepean to Cape Schanck on the back beach.
Blairgowrie's census populations have been:

Nestled in the picturesque and historic Cameron’s Bight, one of Victoria’s first settlements, the Blairgowrie Yacht Squadron Marina is located in the very heart of all the attractions that the Mornington Peninsula has to offer. Located an easy hour and a half’s drive south of Melbourne, the Marina faces north on Port Phillip Bay. And that means we enjoy the type of offshore wind that makes for perfect Bay Sailing during the summer season. Our location just east of Sorrento, also makes us an ideal base for the recreational sailor to explore Port Philip Bay, the renowned cliffs of Portsea, historic Quarantine, The Heads and Queenscliff, on the Bellarine Peninsula side of the Bay. The surf beaches of Bass Strait are close by, and Blairgowrie’s bustling seaside village is a couple hundred metres down the road.
When you choose to berth in the BYS Marina you’ll enjoy convenient boat access, more on the water boating time and more social time! BYS Marina and Clubhouse ‘full lifestyle’ options provide Members and Guests with every type of boating experience, from competitive Yacht Racing of all types and sizes through to Cruising, Fishing, Marine Rescue and training. Perhaps that’s why we enjoy a reputation as a favoured ‘on water’ destination for Victoria's boating community.
