You Can Stay In A New York Airbnb That's A Yacht

the Crown Goose at dock

This classic yacht available through  Airbnb is truly a unique experience. Named the Crown Goose, it may be one of the  best Airbnb rentals in New York . You and five other guests can enjoy a stay on the wooden yacht, which has four bedrooms and five beds. For $311 a night, you'll enjoy fantastic views of New York Harbor. The boat has one and a half bathrooms, plus a wash basin in the bunk room. You won't even have to leave behind your fur babies because this host allows pets to join you during your stay!

There are books and other reading materials to enjoy in case you forget to bring your beach read. Additionally, you can use the sound system to listen to music while relaxing on deck or down below. There's no washer or hair dryer included, and there's no Wi-Fi or TV either. However, with all the nearby attractions surrounding the yacht, you're unlikely to miss them. If you're someone who is a bit taller, you should be prepared to watch your head, though. The boat has a height maximum of just over 6 feet at its peak and goes down a little lower towards the back.

What you can expect when staying on this boat

As you walk up to the boat, you'll be struck by how stunning this classic wooden yacht is. Per the Airbnb listing , the exterior and interior of the ship glow with its rich wooden construction. It's furnished with gorgeous rugs and chairs that bring a sense of elegance and vintage vibes. Visitors will enjoy the adorable nautical décor and bedding in each room. The bedrooms are cozy and could be a tight fit for those who are taller, but you'll get an authentic experience without a doubt! The bunk beds are perfect for kids and teens; they'll love the privacy the bunk room provides.

You can cook all of your meals in the galley kitchen equipped with essential cooking utensils, a fridge, microwave, electric stove, oven, and toaster. When you start your day, you can use the drip coffee maker or steep some tea in the kettle. The kitchen is surprisingly large for the small boat, but you might not want to use it considering how close you'll be to some extraordinary bistros, cafés, and restaurants. You can even enjoy a lovely sunbathing moment on the deck in a lounge chair. Keep an eye out for Lady Liberty because there's a view of her from the yacht.

Exciting amenities and surrounding attractions

During your stay on the Crown Goose, you will not be able to operate the yacht, nor will the boat leave the dock, per  Airbnb . However, there are plenty of clear views of the infamous  New York skyline, and the boat is docked near Brooklyn Bridge Park, so there's plenty to see and do from right there. Brooklyn Bridge Park says there are activities like fishing, pickle ball, birding, and roller skating within the park. There are places to rent bikes you can ride to some of New York City's most famous attractions.

The incredible views and the yacht's proximity to top of the line entertainment and eateries have set this Airbnb up for success, which is evident from its 4.9 stars and 40 reviews. A reviewer named Eric said, "I really loved staying in this yacht. Being on the water with the amazing views of Manhattan, Brooklyn Bridge, and the Statue of Liberty was very nice." And Chris raved, "Lived up to my expectations. This was such a unique way to stay, I was curious if it would live up to the photos and it absolutely did."

Testimonials

I have attended several events on the Yacht Justine. The plush furnishings and careful interior layout produce an atmosphere that is both elegant and intimate. Clean, comfortable, and spacious. A truly memorable way to experience the New York harbor.

Mike Mallner

We spent the first night of our honeymoon on Yacht Justine. It was the ten year anniversary of 9/11, and the tour around lower Manhattan was sobering and reflective, but also heart-stoppingly beautiful. It was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to celebrate our country and one of its greatest cities, and made the first day of our marriage magic and memorable. The accommodations were also very chic and comfortable, preparing us for the five-star resorts we had booked for the rest of our honeymoon. On top of spending the night in luxurious accommodations, we got a kick out of the novelty of knowing we were on a boat. All in all, it was a cherished experience, and one we would recommend to anyone looking for a truly special night.

Rachel Darwin , Communications Manager at Taft and Partners

Justine is beautiful, outside and in; and her crew is tremendous. I have been on many leisure trips on New York waterways on all types of boats from rustic sailboats to cruise ships, and can say that the aesthetic and ethos of one's immediate surroundings greatly impacts the experience. The elegant look of Justine, and the friendly unpretentious feel of her crew has been the number one factor in my enjoyment.

Sidney Oolongo , Events Coordinator

I had the great pleasure of coming aboard Yacht Justine for a cruise on NYE. Justine is a beautiful vessel and the staff was extremely accommodating and nice. I was very impressed by how attentive the staff was and all their efforts to make sure that I enjoyed my time aboard Justine. I will definitely book another cruise in the near future. If you are looking for a classy retreat from the city in the company of an incredible staff, this is where you want to be.

YACHT CHARTERS

Q What is different about your company?

Although everything that floats in New York City is marketed as a "luxury private yacht," Zenith actually owns and operates high-end, beautifully maintained yachts. Our photos, videos, and TV clips are accurate. For ten years, Zenith has served a global elite of CEOs, celebrities, and VIPs from the highest echelons of power. We are the top of the market. We encourage you to visit and see the yachts you are interested in yourselves, and compare. Please ask any local charter agent about our reputation.

Q Who will be on the yacht with us?

All cruises will have a minimum of three crewmembers aboard to assure your safe and enjoyable cruise. A Captain will helm the yacht at all times. All of our captains bring a lifetime of experience and are happy to answer questions and share stories. Two mates will assure safe docking and while aboard will assist guests with comfort, food, and beverages. Cruises booked with a private chef, bartender, or NYC tourguide will have these in addition.

Q Justine is a huge yacht! What is up with the 12 guest limit??

It's the law! The Justine is a private yacht. Under federal regulations any private boat taking paying passengers is only allowed SIX GUESTS, or TWELVE GUESTS for much larger boats – like the Justine - generally over 80 ft long. There are no exceptions; no passenger can be a "friend" or "crewmember" other than paid staff such as your event photographer, tourguide, or wedding officiant. Children do count as passengers. Our company is fully licensed and insured to take guests in a safe and compliant manner. We have been in business over 10 years. Charterers should be VERY wary of any operator telling you to put down excess passengers as "crew" or offering a "bareboat" contract in which the guests claim to be hiring the crew and taking liability for the cruise. None of that is legal nor insured. The Juliette is a unique vessel in NYC - an actual private luxury yacht which has been upgraded to meet Coast Guard commercial standards and legal for up to 40 guests. It still offers a private yacht look and feel.

Q I represent a client who has special security and privacy concerns.

We have broad experience in handling these concerns. All of our guests are entitled to 100% privacy and discretion. We never share any guest information. Crew do not carry phones or cameras. Private and diplomatic security personnel are welcome to travel with guests. Please contact us with any specific concerns or NDA's.

Q What can I bring?

Comfortable shoes and clothing and non-spray sunscreen. Cameras, phones, chargers. We will have towels, ice, and nonalcoholic beverages for every cruise. High heels and shoes with hard black soles are not allowed. Please do not bring any pollution hazards such as confetti, glitter, or streamers; fire hazards such as sparklers. hookahs, fireworks, or sternos; messy food items such as stews, soups, curries, chicken wings, ice cream cakes, bloody mary's, etc.

Q Can we bring children?

Yes, you are welcome to bring your children - HOWEVER they must be under constant adult supervision. We highly recommend bringing your nanny.

Q Can we bring pets?

We do not permit any pets aboard, other than authorized service animals assisting guests with a disability. We love furry guests but keep in mind they get scared, confused, and seasick on yachts.

Q Is there Wi-Fi?

No, but cell phones and streaming data will work throughout all of our routes.

Q What is the music situation?

Both yachts have speakers on all decks. Stereo systems play XM/Sirius radio or guests can Bluetooth their favorite music. You can bring a DJ with their own equipment as well.

Q Do I have to remove shoes aboard?

We do allow guests to wear their shoes aboard. We recommend comfortable options such as sandals or sneakers. High heels and mens' dress shoes with hard black soles are not permitted.

Q Are any parts of the yacht off-limits?

Guests are not allowed into the engine room or other clearly-marked restricted areas. However, anyone who wants an educational tour of the engines and machinery of the yacht is welcome to request this of the captain before or after a cruise. Staterooms with attached bathrooms are available on both yachts for private conversations, changing, hair/makeup, etc.

Q Where do you sail from? Where do you go?

Our home dock is Newport a private and upscale marina in the heart of the Jersey City Waterfront. It is located directly across the Holland Tunnel from Manhattan with PATH Train and garage parking onsite. We can pickup and dropoff guests at Chelsea Piers, North Cove (World Financial District), Dyckman Marina in uptown Manahttan, Liberty State Park (Jersey City), and One15 downtown Brooklyn Marina for varying fees. We can also serve the Hudson River Valley, Long Island, Connecticut and the Hamptons. Our typical 3 cruise covers all of Manhattan's iconic skyline, including the Empire State Building, Freedom Tower, Intrepid, Brooklyn Bridge, Ellis Island, and a close-up at the Statue of Liberty. Full day cruises can explore the Northern Hudson Valley, Sandy Hook, or Long Island Sound. The Hamptons, Montauk, Mystic, Newport RI, and Block Island require multiday bookings.

Q Which times/dates are available or recommended?

All of our cruises are custom and yachts are available any time, any day. Holidays and weekends are generally booked early. Some guests prefer spending all day under the sun, others prefer watching the city lights from the comfort of a private yacht at night. The most popular option is to book during sunset, 6-9pm or 7-10pm to experience daylight, sunset, and a bit of NYC after dark.

Q What if the weather is bad?

If the weather is unsafe to sail, we offer a no-fee rescheduling or if no mutually agreeable date is available, full refund. If the weather is not perfect but not unsafe (i.e. rain) we do our best to accommodate all guest requests. It is our goal to provide the best experience possible and in these situations we will try to work with you and see if better times/dates are available. The yacht interior is climate controlled and we do sail in rain. The contract does not provide for no-fee rescheduling or refund for inclement weather but we try to work with everyone to come up with mutually agreeable solutions.

Q I see the same boats listed everywhere? Where should I book this?

Our pricing is standardized and you should feel comfortable booking with any authorized agent or broker, or directly. Online "Airbnb"-style booking services may levy additional fees.

Q How do we pay for a cruise?

We take deposits on credit cards to reserve dates and expect the balance to be paid online via Zelle/ACH/"E-check". We also accept wires, bitcoin, cash, and company or bank checks.

Q What discounts do you offer?

Our pricing is based upon the substantial overhead costs of maintaining and professionally staffing multimillion dollar private yachts. We cut no corners and provide luxury service. Generally speaking, we do not offer discounts. We offer an experience which is often less expensive yet vastly superior to private service at exclusive Manhattan landside venues.

Q What is a customary tip?

Tips for hardworking crew are not included unless specifically added in advance. Tipping is appreciated and customary at the end of your cruise for an amazing experience. One tip for the entire crew, recommended at 18% of total charter fee, can be handed to the Captain and will be split evenly among the crew. Cash is preferred but credit cards, Zelle, and Venmo are also accepted.

Q I am an influencer! Please give me a free cruise so I can post photos of your yacht and get you tons of business!

Thank you but pass.

Q Are we allowed to swim from the yacht?

New York Harbor and the Hudson River have fast currents and heavy boat traffic and are NOT safe for swimming. We do permit swimming from the Justine yacht only, as part of full-day or overnight cruises. We will take you to a more protected area such as Croton, Coney Island, Manhasset Bay, or Sandy Hook. There is no swimming from the Juliette yacht, or as part of any half-day cruise.

Q Can I fly my drone?

We allow guests who wish to take a drone photo or video to do so from a dock only, either before or after the cruise. Any aerial videography from a moving yacht MUST be discussed and cleared with management well in advance (not during boarding). We must discuss homepoint settings, EMF interference, and have insurance and a damage deposit on file.

Q Are there any kayaks, jetskis, etc?

We operate primarily in New York Harbor, which is not a safe place for kayaking, wakeboarding, etc. We can bring water toys upon request for overnight or fullday charters leaving the metro area. Any jetskis require coordination with a third party rental company, which requires advanced planning.

Q Can we film aboard?

You are welcome to photograph/film and share whatever you like. Commercial film and photo shoots should be aware that we do not require permits to film aboard but marinas and docks will require permits for dockside filming. Our crew can help with layouts, positioning, and recommend locations and angles. All commercial film and photoshoots are subject to a $1250/hr flat fee, 4 hour minimum, with a credit card on file for overtime. We can assist with chase boats. Staterooms are available for monitors, hair/makeup/wardrobe, etc.

HEALTH AND SAFETY

Q What are your policies regarding masks and the Coronavirus?

We will fully comply with state and federal regulations which apply. Our guests are not currently required to mask and social distance aboard during the 2023 season.

Q Am I allowed to smoke on the yacht?

Smoking and Vaping is permitted on outside decks only. Ashtrays will be provided. Guests are not allowed to bring any smoking device with hot coals, such as hookahs, which present a fire hazard.

Q Are you Handicap-accessible?

No , these yachts are not ADA-compliant. All guests must ascend stairs to board and to access the top deck. However, we have hosted many guests with limited mobility, who board with the assistance of crew and family members. Please contact us with any specific concerns or requirements.

Q Will I be seasick?

New York Harbor generally is fairly calm although waves can be made by criss-crossing ferries. If you are prone to seasickness we recommend taking an over-the-counter medication such as Dramamine one hour in advance, not drinking alcohol, and spending time on outside decks. Crew cannot dispense medications.

Best waterfront Airbnbs near NYC

The Ziggy Stardust Surf House in Jamaica Bay

1.  The Ziggy Stardust Surf House in Jamaica Bay

This Jamaica Bay houseboat is perfect for those who want to have a short walk to the beach from picturesque lodgings. The interior is all white with beautiful beachy decor, from a hammock in a window to reclaimed wood accents and modern furniture. Meanwhile, the boathouse itself can accommodate 8 people, but it's strictly not a party boat (aww shucks!) and only renters who are responsible and clean will be given the keys. There's no bathroom, so you'd have to use the marina toilets… Which isn't a big deal when you see where you'll be staying.

Rooms?  Four. Sleeps eight guests. Mood? Floatin' fun. Location perks?  It's a houseboat… On the water… It's pretty epic. Budget range?  Pricey but worth it.

The Franco Floating Surf Safari in Queens

2.  The Franco Floating Surf Safari in Queens

For a one-of-a-kind stay, check out this cozy boat on the marina at Rockaway Beach, nicknamed,  for whatever reason, The James Franco. The houseboat is only two blocks from the local beach and features a cozy cabin, double bedroom and decked-out outdoor areas at the entrance and on the roof, all painted beautifully and hung with cute lights. The host says the community is a quaint artist, surfer and fishermen community that "keeps a close eye on visitors". Gorgeously eclectic.

Rooms?  One. Sleeps two guests. Mood? Couple's getaway.  Location perks?  Okay, this might just outdo the Ziggy Stardust houseboat. Just. Budget range?  Very affordable.

The modern architectural gem in Amagansett

3.  The modern architectural gem in Amagansett

Really looking to splash out? Then this is the way to do it. Found in Amagansett, this sleek modern home is designed by architect David Ling (your host) and is found right on the coast of Ocean Beach. When you're not splashing around in the water, you can enjoy expansive vistas from the floor-to-ceiling windows, curl up by the open fireplace and cook up a storm in the kitchen. There's even a gorgeous terrace overlooking the beach, equipped with a BBQ and an outdoor shower for the warmer months.

Rooms?  Three . Sleeps four guests. Mood? Modern minimalism.  Location perks?  The surrounding views of Amagansett and Montauk are pretty stunning. Enjoy. Budget range?  Uber spenny.

The cozy apartment near the Hudson River

4.  The cozy apartment near the Hudson River

This private hideaway is found just one block away from the Hudson River and has all you need for an escape from city life. The space features its own kitchen, bathroom and comfy queen bed. However, we'd say the main sell is the charming outdoor terrace, which boasts amazing views of the water. When you're not lazing around with a good book, you can explore the adorable surrounding town of Piermont.

Rooms?  One. Sleeps two guests. Mood? Cozy vibes. Location perks?  Views over the water and sunsets to die for. Budget range?  A real steal.

The waterside cabin with a hot tub in Greenwood Lake

5.  The waterside cabin with a hot tub in Greenwood Lake

In little over an hours' drive north of NYC, you'll find yourself amid the Appalachian Trail Corridor, at a cute and stylish cabin surrounded by the Sterling Forest and overlooking Greenwood Lake. If you exhaust the views from the hot tub or BBQ on the deck (let's face it, you won't), then you'll be pleased to know there is also plenty do in the area, including brewery and winery visits, boating and hiking (obvs), skiing in the chillier months, shopping, golf and waterfront restaurants. Absolute bliss.

Rooms? Two. Sleeps six guests. Mood? Cute and colourful. Location perks? Believe it or not, there's an express bus stop within walking distance of the cabin, with a regular service to/from Port Authority. Budget range? Affordable.

The tiny house by the lake in Nassau

6.  The tiny house by the lake in Nassau

This unique miniature abode is located in Nassau, just a couple of hours up from NYC. What it lacks in size, it makes up for in ingenuity and surroundings. There are two queen-size beds in there, a living room with sofa and TV, well-equipped kitchen, breakfast bar overlooking the water and a full bathroom with stand-up shower and washing machine. There's also direct access to the water via a sandy slope and, if you're an animal lover, you'll be delighted to know that not only is it uber pet friendly, but there are grazing donkeys nearby.

Rooms? Two. Sleeps four guests. Mood? Tiny but mighty. Location perks? Two words: private peninsula. Budget range? Affordable.

The long-let beach room on City Island

7.  The long-let beach room on City Island

If all you need is one bedroom near the water, this cozy apartment on Long Island Sound is for you. Based in the Bronx, you'll have access to Pelham Bay Park and Orchard Beach. In fact, the apartment has a shared garden just steps from the sand and access to the water for those who want to canoe or kayak.

Rooms?  One. Sleeps two guests. Mood? Long-term waterfront life. Location perks?  Stunning views over Long Island Sound. Budget range?  Affordable for a 30-night stay minimum.

Quick stats about vacation rentals in New York

Your guide to new york, all about new york city.

The city that never sleeps is also a showcase of the best the United States has to offer. Manhattan’s bustling, gridded streets are home to some of the nation’s most famous landmarks, such as Times Square, Central Park, and Rockefeller Center, as well as neighborhoods made famous by TV shows, such as the West Village and the Upper East Side. But there’s more to New York City than Manhattan. Explore the other four boroughs, too: the Bronx (home of the New York Yankees and Italian-infuenced Arthur Avenue), Staten Island (a free ferry ride away and a world all its own), Brooklyn (a mix of trendy eateries and family-friendly communities), and Queens (including the waterfront Long Island City and the culturally diverse Astoria).

The best time to stay in a vacation rental in New York

All four seasons bring their own special touch to the Big Apple. Summer highs are in the 70s and 80s Fahrenheit, the perfect weather for a cooling riverfront stroll or drinks at a rooftop bar. Once the high temperatures fall into the brisk 50-to-70-degree range in September, the fall colors, especially in Central Park, paint the city in cozy hues. While winter can bring chills, with highs in the 30s and 40s, there’s nothing more magical than the city draped with a layer of snow. Springtime offers its own brand of hope, as the urban jungle blooms again, and temperatures rise into the 50s, 60s, and 70s. But as fast as the city moves, so does the weather, so plan ahead and be prepared for quick changes.

Top things to do in New York

Central park.

As the rapid urbanization of New York City surged in the 1800s, the 843-acre Central Park was carved out in 1858 to ensure Manhattanites had their own backyard. Now they share it with 43 million visitors a year. No agenda is needed to explore the wonders of the green space, but among the highlights are the Bethesda Fountain, Belvedere Castle, and Strawberry Fields’ Imagine sign.

Empire State Building

While plenty of city skyscrapers offer sprawling views — including the One World Observatory, Top of the Rock, and Hudson Yards’ Edge — the classic New York City aerial view is still from the top of this 102-story building, completed in 1931.

Statue of Liberty

Located on Liberty Island in the Hudson River, the 22-story copper Lady Liberty is accessible via ferry from Battery Park or New Jersey’s Liberty State Park, and includes a visit to Ellis Island.

New York City’s Crackdown on Airbnb Is Starting. Here’s What to Expect.

On Tuesday, the city will start enforcing strict new rules on how and when New Yorkers can rent out homes using platforms like Airbnb and Vrbo.

The Manhattan skyline on a clear, sunny day.

By Mihir Zaveri

New York City officials on Tuesday are expected to start enforcing strict new regulations that limit residents’ ability to rent out homes through platforms like Airbnb.

The move is expected to lead to the removal of thousands of listings from the platforms. It is the latest and potentially most consequential development in the yearslong feud between big cities and the home-sharing companies.

The city argues that the proliferation of short-term rentals through Airbnb and other platforms has pushed up rents and helped fuel New York City’s housing shortage.

Airbnb has said the new rules amount to a “de facto ban” on the platform, and other critics say the city is bending to the lobbying of the hotel industry and locking out cheaper options for visitors.

What are the new regulations?

For years, the city has maintained that existing laws preclude people from renting out homes to guests for less than 30 days, unless the host is present during the stay. The city also asserts that no more than two guests are allowed to stay at a time, and that they must have ready access to the entire home.

But there continue to be numerous listings for rentals of whole apartments and homes, and the city has argued companies like Airbnb are not policing their platforms aggressively enough to root out violators.

A city official claimed in a July court filing that more than half of Airbnb’s $85 million net revenue in 2022 from short-term rentals in New York City came from activity that is illegal. Airbnb disputes the figure.

The new regulations, which the city will begin enforcing on Tuesday after a series of court challenges, require hosts to register with the city to be allowed to rent on a short-term basis.

In order to collect fees associated with the short-term stays, Airbnb, Vrbo, Booking.com and other companies must check that a host’s registration application has been approved.

Starting Tuesday, hosts who violate the rules could face fines of up to $5,000 for repeat offenders, and platforms could be fined up to $1,500 for transactions involving illegal rentals.

Why restrict short-term rentals?

City officials estimated there were roughly 10,800 Airbnb listings as of March 2023 that were illegal short-term rentals. They have argued that renting those homes to tourists and visitors instead of New Yorkers exacerbates the city’s acute housing shortage and makes it even more expensive to live here.

Residents who live in buildings with short-term rentals have complained that transient guests bring a greater risk of crime, excessive noise and cleanliness problems.

Christian Klossner, the executive director of the Mayor’s Office of Special Enforcement, said the new rules would create a “clear path for hosts who follow the city’s longstanding laws.”

There is also the influence of the hotel industry, a competitor of platforms like Airbnb. The Hotel Trades Council, a powerful force in local politics and ally of Mayor Eric Adams, has long fought the expansion of the platforms.

What is the argument in favor of short-term rentals?

Airbnb says short-term home rentals help the city’s tourism economy, especially in parts of the city where there are few hotels.

The company has fought the new rules in court, arguing that city code should allow “unhosted” rentals in some one- and two-family homes, and that New York City’s interpretation of its own laws is “unreasonable.”

Airbnb has also contended that the registration system is unnecessarily complex. Its lawsuit was dismissed last month.

“The city is sending a clear message to millions of potential visitors who will now have fewer accommodation options when they visit New York City: you are not welcome,” said Theo Yedinsky, Global Policy Director for Airbnb.

What will happen starting Tuesday?

There will be far fewer Airbnb listings available.

Any short-term rentals through platforms like Airbnb for units that are not classified as “hotels,” and have not been registered with the city, will probably no longer be available. Airbnb said some listings would be automatically converted to long-term rentals and others would be deactivated.

Airbnb estimated last month that there were nearly 15,000 hosts that have active listings for short-term rentals in homes across the city. As of Aug. 28, the city had received about 3,250 registration applications. Only 257 had been approved.

Airbnb said that since mid-August, it has prevented people from booking short-term reservations in New York City for after Sept. 5.

Neither Airbnb nor the city could provide updated data on the number of listings expected to be taken down.

AirDNA, a rental analytics company, estimated that of the roughly 13,500 active listings for entire apartments and homes on Airbnb as of July, about 6,000 appeared to be for units classified as hotels or offered long-term rentals, leaving about 7,500 listings that could be affected by the new rules.

Will my booking get canceled?

If you have booked an Airbnb for less than 30 days after Tuesday, a few things could happen.

If the stay involves a check-in before Dec. 1, the reservation will not be canceled.

But reservations for after Dec. 2 will be canceled and refunded, according to the company. Airbnb did not say how many such reservations there were.

The city said it would not remove guests from illegal short-term rentals unless there were health or safety hazards in the apartment.
