3 Spookley the Square Pumpkin Activities That Are Simple and Adorable

If you aren’t reading Spookley the Square Pumpkin to your students in October, is it even Halloween?! For real, though: Spookley has quite a hold on my own preschooler all year (it’s one of her most-requested bedtime books). My first grade students also loved the tale of this square gourd who saves the day, so I’m super excited to share with you some ideas for Spookley the Square Pumpkin activities in your classroom.

spookley the square pumpkin activities - cover image

Spookley the Square Pumpkin Activities: The Craft Project

What you’ll need:

– Spookley the Square Pumpkin printable template (download it here)

– Orange, black, and green construction paper

– Scissors

– Glue stick

– Googly eyes (optional)

Instructions:

Print out the Spookley the Square Pumpkin template on white card stock. You will need one template for each student.

Next, have students trace Spookley onto orange construction paper and cut him out.

Now it’s time to add the details! Students can use black construction paper to create a mouth and green construction paper to make Spookley’s stem. Add googly eyes if you’d like.

Finally, glue Spookley onto a piece of black construction paper.

There you have it! Your very own Spookley the Square Pumpkin craft project. These make great Halloween decorations for your classroom or home. And they’re perfect for a Spookley the Square Pumpkin book activity, too!

Spookley the Square Pumpkin Activities: The Bulletin Board Display

Okay, hear me out. What if we used your craft from above and turned it into a craftivity—pair it with a writing prompt and voila! You have an adorable, eye-catching set of Spookley the Square Pumpkins to make the cutest bulletin board in all the land.

Spookley writing prompts I love are :

1. Spookley is different. What makes you different?

2. Spookley is brave. What are some things that take bravery?

3. Spookley saves the day! Write about a time when you saved the day.

Your students’ responses will make for an adorable, unique, and inspiring display in your classroom or school!

You can download your own Spookley template, writing prompts, and printable paper here!

Spookley the Square Pumpkin Activities: The Game (Spookley Saves the Day)

Pressure is on at the pumpkin patch! This Spookley the Square Pumpkin game is a perfect way to work on those fine motor skills and sneak in some math practice, too!

– Spookley the Square Pumpkin printable (download it here)

– Dice (regular or mini foam ones)

Print and cut out the Spookley the Square Pumpkin printable. You will need one Spookley printable for each student or group of students.

Students take turns rolling the dice and coloring in that many pumpkins. The goal is to “save” and color in as many pumpkins as possible before time runs out (you can set a timer for one minute, two minutes, etc.).

The student with the most pumpkins colored in at the end of the game is the winner!

You can download your Spookley Saves the Day printable here.

These are just a few ideas for Spookley the Square Pumpkin activities that I hope you and your students enjoy! Be sure to tag me on Instagram (@erinwatersedu) when you use these in your own classroom!

Spookley The Square Pumpkin is always a favorite Halloween read aloud. It’s a great book about being unique, tolerance and perseverance. After reading the book, we completed these Spookley The Square Pumpkin activities .

spookley the square pumpkin games

For all of our Spookley The Square Pumpkin lessons, we used our Read It Up! resource!

spookley the square pumpkin activities

Spookley The Square Pumpkin

We start off our literacy activities by making predictions. Making predictions about a story excites the neurons for our readers so it engages them more in the story and helps them focus on the story. As we make predications based on the cover, we record them using our graphic organizer.

spookley the square pumpkin games

After reading the book we go back and re-visit our predictions and write what actually happened in the story.

Then we complete a story map to focus on the story elements.

spookley the square pumpkin games

As we completed our story map, we also identified a problem and solution from the story. Students then complete their own story map. After they finish their story map, they must retell the story using the illustrations they drew.

Spookley The Square Pumpkin Text Evidence

Spookley is a great story to introduce text evidence to students. We listed several characteristics of Spookley and the students have to identify evidence from the text to support those characteristics.

spookley the square pumpkin games

Then we used adjectives to describe Spookley!

Spookley The Square Pumpkin: Writing

Students used adjectives to write about Spookley. They had to use an adjective to describe Spookley and give a supporting reason. Finally, they illustrated their writing.

Spookley Graphing

Students use sticky notes to graph whether they’ve been to a pumpkin patch. After we complete our graph, we use our recording sheet to analyze the data.

Spookley Snack And Craft

Finally, students made their own version of Spookley The Square Pumpkin!

Teachers who know Spookley the Square Pumpkin typically use his origin story, The Legend of Spookley the Square Pumpkin , in the fall to teach about embracing differences. But it turns out there are more Spookley books, lesson plans, music videos, and activity pages to entertain and educate your students. We took a look at all the Spookley resources and pulled together some other good times for incorporating Spookley.

Managing emotions on the first day of school

In Spookley the Square Pumpkin, The First Day of School , everyone’s favorite square pumpkin is nervous about his first day of school. As he goes through his day and discovers the wonder of learning new things, his worries disappear. Grab the book and then use the activities in the kit to help your students identify and manage the emotions that come with such a big day!

Empowering kids to help prevent bullying

Spookley is the “Official Spokes-Pumpkin” for National Bullying Prevention Month (October), and he wants your students to sign the pledge against bullying. Find out more at PACER’s National Bullying Prevention Center , and don’t miss the educator toolkit . We love the discussion questions and the “acts of kindness trick-or-treat bag” activity.

Making the most of fall

Halloween is the perfect time to read the classic Spookley story , but we also love The Halloween Movie Book (Plus, if you have Netflix, you can stream the movie for your class). Print some coloring pages for your kids and put on some of the great videos from the official Spookley YouTube page . They can even DIY their own Spookley costume !

Honoring all types of families at Thanksgiving

Spookley the Square Pumpkin: A Family To Be Thankful For tells the story of a sad and lonely Spookley who eventually learns that no one family tree grows quite the same as another. Download the toolkit for fun drawing and writing activities, and don’t miss author Joe Troiano reading the story aloud.

Celebrating the winter holidays

For a nice seasonal read-aloud, try the brand new Spookley and the Christmas Kittens: the Movie Book or Mistletoe and the Christmas Kittens (the book upon which the Christmas movie was based). The corresponding toolkit includes fun holiday-themed puzzles plus a great reflection activity on gift giving.

spookley the square pumpkin games

SPOOKLEY THE SQUARE PUMPKIN is friendly, sweet, and kindhearted. He always looks for, and finds, the best in others. He tries to help anyone in need. Even though he is little, Spookley accepts every challenge placed before him and can always be counted on to do his best.

spookley the square pumpkin games

Big & Little Tom

BIG TOM is a lovable, gentle giant who relies on his brother, Little Tom, to think and make decisions for him.

spookley the square pumpkin games

BOBO is a beautiful, round female pumpkin. Because she is so pretty, she thinks she is better than everyone in the patch.

spookley the square pumpkin games

Edgar, Allan & Poe

EDGAR THE SPIDER is the gruff leader of the good- natured “gang” of three spiders (Edgar, Allan and Poe). Edgar is a lovable scamp. His heart is in the right place, but he just can’t help himself—a spider’s a spider and you just can’t trust ‘em.

ALLAN THE SPIDER is a good friend to Edgar and Poe and a great team player. He is quiet, and only speaks when he has something important to say.

POE THE SPIDER is a chubby lovable scoundrel. He is simple and much more good-natured than Edgar and Allan.

spookley the square pumpkin games

Scat, Scram & Shoo

SCAT is the leader of the trio and enjoys guiding his fellow kittens through various challenges.  He has a sunny disposition, loves to laugh and spread good cheer, and really knows how to have a good time.

SCRAM is the smallest and youngest of the kittens, but the bravest one with the biggest heart. She is loyal and devoted to her two brothers and would do anything to protect them.

SHOO is the only one of the kittens who does not speak. Instead of talking, he communicates through pantomiming. He is a wise, innocent whose playful antics and boundless curiosity often lead the kittens to comical misadventures.

spookley the square pumpkin games
