Horror Movies May Come & Go, Raaz Will Remain My Favourite Scary Movie
‘Mere itne kareeb mat aao, main tumhein barbaad kardungi!’…’Main barbaad hona chahta hoon. ‘ When Malini Sharma and Dino Morea exchanged these lines in a scene from Raaz (2002), I was swayed away with their extreme level of intensity. Way before Fifty Shades Of Grey franchise, Raaz was probably the only spooky film back in 2000s era that taught us the art of surrendering in love.
Hindi cinema has enlightened us with many horror films over decades including Mahal, Bees Saal Baad, Veerana, Paapi Gudiya and many more. While some were quite horrifying, a few of them turned out to be cringe AF. Cut to 2002, entered Vikram Bhatt’s directorial venture Raaz , a supernatural horror movie, which was much more than just a representation of paranormal world.
Here I present you seven reasons why Raaz still remains my favourite spooky film in Bollywood.
1. Dino Morea and Bipasha Basu’s sizzling chemistry
Raaz brought Dino Morea and Bipasha Basu in lead roles as husband and wife. Their sizzling chemistry was a highlight of the film. Dino and Bipasha not only made me believe in the idea of love but they also shouldered the horror genre with utmost perfection. Back in the days, they were real-life couple as well. Their relationship continued for over six years until their break-up in 2002 .
2. Spooky forest that spoke without words
Raaz truly aced the idea of making Ooty ke jungle look spooky on-screen. Right from the introductory scene till the climax, forest emerged as a driving force to create horrific plot against the background of foggy weather. I am sure most of us pledged to never visit forest areas at night after its release. Wait, did I just hear Sanjanaaaa in the background?
3. Evil spirit’s bone-chilling whispers and loud screams
No one, I repeat, no paranormal character other than Malini Malik, the evil spirit in Raaz , scared the sh*t out me. Malini as the spirit didn’t require white saree to scare the audience, she managed to petrify us with loud screams. Remember when Malini whispered Sanjana’s name in her ears? Spookiest AF.
4. Melodious music album unlike reboots
Hands down, the whole soundtrack of Raaz was the cherry on the cake. The music was composed by Nadeem-Shravan and the lyrics were penned by Sameer. Party song? Yahan Pe Sab Shanti Shanti Hai . Wedding track? Tum Agar Saamne . Lovemaking song? Aapke Pyaar Mein . Reunion track? Kitna Pyaara Hai Ye Chehra . Raaz had a music variety that its reboots didn’t.
5. Professor Agni Swaroop being creepy AF
Professor Agni Swaroop, a character played by veteran actor Ashutosh Rana, looked creepier than the evil spirit. From showing how lemon changes its colour to making Sanjana read a spirit-calling book, Professor Agni scared us throughout the film. Also, remember when his eyes turned white in the climax?
6. Malini’s husky voice and great fashion sense
Malini’s husky voice, curly hair, and impeccable fashion sense were enough reasons to drool over her when she was alive. Be it Red, Black or Blue, Malini aced every dress that she wore. Also, look at her playing the violin. Great skills, great skills, and great skills.
7. Lamp lights, blood, lemon, windows and more
Vikram Bhatt aptly utilised the props to create a sense of fear in the minds of the audience. From fluctuating lamp lights, spirit appearing in the mirror, blood being dropped from chandelier, windows/doors rattling in the night, lemon turning into red colour, or axe dropping in the balcony, everything looked scary.
Unlike Raaz , the reboots of the franchise, haven’t been able to rule our hearts yet. So, are we on the same page?

Raaz Completes 20 Years, Bipasha Basu Recalls Shooting 'In the Cold Wilderness Wearing a Nightie'
Curated By : Entertainment Bureau
Last Updated: February 01, 2022, 13:37 IST
Bipasha Basu revisits memories of shooting for Vikram Bhatt's Raaz as the film completes 20 years today.
On the 20th anniversary of Raaz, Bipasha Basu recalls how the film's cast and crew would add more spookiness to the shoot to get a better performance out of her.
It has been two whole decades since the horror thriller Raaz released, giving Bipasha Basu a major hit in her career. Only two films old, Bipasha made the bold decision to take on the role of Sanjana Dhanraj in Raaz. Playing the role of a woman who is haunted by the spirit of her husband’s lover, the glamorous diva set the tone for the rest of her career with this film. The Vikram Bhatt directorial became the second highest grossing film of 2002 and Bipasha won over the hearts of the audience as well as the critics.
Today, as the film completes twenty years of release, Bipasha walked down the memory lane and shared some fun and interesting anecdotes about her Raaz days. She said, “We were shooting in Ooty for the film and we had a lot of night sequences to shoot where I would wake up in the night to sounds and walk into the forest. While the real location was a beautiful bungalow, the ambience around was cold, chilly, dimly lit and eerie. This would make the surroundings in the night so scary! And I had to walk alone into the wilderness in the cold wearing a nightie!”
Talking about some fun pranks director Vikram Bhatt played on her to get an on-camera reaction, she said, “Vikram had this huge gong that he would unexpectedly ring to get the right reaction out of me. The first time he used the gong, I was absolutely caught unawares while walking in pin-drop silence and it was so scary that I shook and screamed loudly! I thought my soul left my body! After that, the gong became my biggest villain! He would use that gong at any point to get a crazy reaction out of me!”
Speaking about how the film’s cast and crew would add more spookiness to the shoot, she said, “In the night, everyone, including Saroj Khan, Ashutosh Rana and Vikram Bhatt, would narrate the scariest ghost stories that they have experienced. It was quite crazy and made my job of getting scared a little easier. I definitely had my share of spooks during the filming of Raaz!”
Co-starring Dino Morea and Ashutosh Rana, the supernatural horror film was co-produced by Vishesh Films and Tips Industries. Bipasha Basu’s compelling portrayal of her character in the film is counted amongst one of her best performances.

Dino mentioned how the film’s music is still remembered and applauded everyone involved in the film. He added, “The songs till today are being played many times over, thanks Nadeem Sir & Shravan Sir for the magic you created. The thrill, the scare, the romance the film, still spoken about. We did start a trend for cool, nice scary movies. So thanks again to you, the audience for loving us.” Bipasha Basu left a heart emoji on Dino’s post.
In an earlier interview, when we asked Vikram Bhatt if he would like to remake Raaz, he told us, “I don’t know how I made it in the first place. I don’t think films are made, they just happen. I shot an arrow in the air. You try to make the film to the best of your ability. The only way to not make a flop film is not make a film at all.”

Which is the scariest Raaz film? VOTE!
Did the first Raaz scare you the most?
T he fourth installment of the Raaz franchise is out.
Starring Emraan Hashmi, Kriti Kharbanda and Gaurav Arora, Vikram Bhatt's Raaz Reboot is about a couple and their encounter with an evil spirit. The reboot version is a remix of all the previous Raaz films.
Did you watch the Raaz movies? Which one was the scariest? VOTE at the end!
T he first film from the successful horror franchise came out way back in 2002.
Featuring Bipasha Basu, Dino Morea and Malini Sharma, the film was an unofficial remake of the Hollywood movie What Lies Beneath and did manage to scare people with its haunting music, good execution and decent performances.
When Bipasha and Dino's marriage hits rock bottom, the duo head off to Ooty to rekindle their romance. Things take a U-turn as their new house is haunted. How the couple battles the ghostly presence and save their marriage forms the rest of the story.
The chemistry between Bips and Dino also helped in making Raaz a hit.
Raaz: The Mystery Continues
T he second film from the series came out in 2009 and it opened to mixed reviews. This time, the Bhatts roped in their blue-eyed boy Emraan Hashmi along with Kangana Ranaut and her then boyfriend Adhyayan Suman.
In the film, Emraan has the ability to paint the future and his paintings predict that Kangana is in danger. How he helps her and in the process, falls in love with her forms the rest of the story.
Emraan and Kangana's jodi worked in the favour of the film along with its music. The film had some spine-chilling moments too.
E mraan and Bipasha were retained for the third installment along with Esha Gupta. The film got mixed reviews as well but it raked in big moolah at the box office.
The story revolves around Bipasha's character, a successful actress, who is threatened when her step-sister (Esha) makes her debut.
Emraan, who plays a producer, initially helps Bipasha with her witchcraft plans to destroy Esha but he later decides to save her.
The film had more skin show than scare tactics but that didn't hamper its box office fate.
T he fourth installment marked the debut of South actress Kriti Kharbanda. Co-starring Emraan and Gaurav Arora, the film has hardly anything new to offer.
Gaurav and Kriti move to Romania but things turn ugly as he distances himself from his wife, who gets possessed by a demonic spirit.
Emraan plays Kriti's ex-boyfriend, who eventually comes to her rescue.
Vikram Bhatt has used all the scare tactics from his previous films in this one.
Compared to other Raaz films, this one is the least engaging.

Even After 20 Years, Raaz Still Remains The Best Bollywood Horror Movie Of All Time
“Aisa Lagta Hai Ye Bijli Ek Baar Fir Giregi… Pata Nahi Kis Pe Aur Kahan”, This dialogue from the movie Raaz may get old but the theme and visualization of this movie are still dominating the Bollywood world. No one can deny that in recent times, there are countless movies and series that the audience has access to. Since the pandemic, we saw a swarm of new talent making their way into OTT platforms, creating films that are relatable and kept us captivated.
We may have seen a variety of content across different genres including thrillers, rom-com, action, and drama. Here’s why I believe Bipasha Basu’s Raaz continues to rule my preferred genre – horror.
Even After 20 Years, Raaz Still Remains One of The Best Bollywood Horror Movies Of All Time
Raaz is a Bollywood horror film directed by Vikram Bhatt and released in 2002. The film stars Bipasha Basu, Dino Morea, and Malini Sharma in lead roles. The movie was a commercial success at the box office and is considered one of the milestones in the horror genre of Bollywood.
The movie’s story revolves around a newlywed couple, Sanjana and Aditya, who move to Ooty to start their new life together. However, strange occurrences begin to take place in their new home, and Sanjana starts to feel that her husband is keeping something from her. As the story progresses, secrets are revealed, and the couple finds themselves caught in a web of deception, betrayal, and supernatural elements.
“Raaz” was lauded for its gripping storyline, strong performances, and excellent direction. The film’s music, composed by Nadeem-Shravan, was also well-received by audiences and contributed significantly to the movie’s success.
While the statement that “Raaz” is still the best horror movie ever is a subjective opinion and can vary from person to person, it is undoubtedly one of the most popular and successful horror films in Bollywood’s history. The movie’s success also spawned a successful franchise, with several sequels and spin-offs made over the years.
Here’s why Raaz is still ruling Bollywood’s horror genre, even after 20 years:
1. unsettling, eerie atmosphere that makes the plot even more intriguing.
Sanjana and Aditya are attempting to save their unsuccessful marriage in Ooty. But they have no idea that the romantic location that they thought will bring peace in their lives, will keep them on alert.
2. Bipasha’s introduction as the terror queen
We are thankful that Bollywood identified her as a horror monarch. Bipasha’s cadence in the picture is worth noting. The scenario in which she is gardening and an axe appears out of nowhere, not once, but several times, can certainly send chills up your spine.
3. Professor Ashutosh Rana scarier than Dushman
Ashutosh Rana left us all impressed with his acting skills in Dushan. And, with Raaz he shows how much more he is capable of. The way he acts out in scenes where he feels the spirit and his impending death makes you admire his talent even more.
4. You can’t un-hear Sanjanaaaa
That moniker can be heard throughout the picture. Bipasha’s name is Sanjana, but she can hear the breezes saying it directly into her ear whenever she is alone at home. You may be horrified by the way her hair soars and she turns out.
5. A frightening yet seductive
Not only Bipasha Basu but even the spirit raises the seductive quotient of the movie. Malini Sharma (as Malini Malik, who portrays the malevolent spirit), the daughter of a retired Colonel, is not your typical spectre in a white saree. She’s terrifying, seductive, and sometimes too beautiful to look away.
6. This isn’t your normal spectre in a white saree
Malini wasn’t your normal spectre dressed in a white saree. In reality, the spirit is a sassy character. Director Vikram Bhatt made sure to portray Malini as a beautiful girl with a husky voice who drove her father’s jeep before she became a malevolent ghost. Playing a psychologically disturbed lady who falls in love with Dino Morea, Malini as a character left the audience impressed.
7. Box office success, resulting in additional episodes
Many reboots have come and gone, but the original still remains supreme. The Ooty, wooden home and hill station atmosphere of Bipasha-Dino’s film makes it an ideal location for a horror film.
8. Unlike other scary films, this one has the finest soundtrack
Nadeem Shravan composed the film’s soundtrack, and the tracks were mostly sung by Udit Narayan and Alka Yagnik, what else do we need from the 1990s and 2000s? Get your headphones to listen to tracks like Aapke Pyaar Mein, Jo Bhi Kasmein Khayi Thi, Main Agar Saamne, and the haunting Yahan Pe Sab Shanti Shanti Hai.
9. The jungle sequences in Bollywood are by far the finest
This is a Bipasha Basu drama with an equally strong supporting ensemble. She may have made her debut with Ajnabee, but Raaz established her as an actor. Bipasha left everyone impressed with her precise timing for scare and excitement.
Isn’t Raaz one of the finest Bollywood movies of all time? What do you think? Tell us in the comments below.

All the Ghostface killers in the 'Scream' movies so far
- Warning: Spoilers ahead for every single "Scream" movie, including "Scream 6."
- There have been 13 killers in the "Scream" movies so far.
- Most installments feature more than one Ghostface.
Billy Loomis and Stu Macher, "Scream" (1996)
Cast your mind back to 1996, it's the year of "The Craft" and "Independence Day" — and Wes Craven's first "Scream" movie .
It's the one that introduced the world to Ghostface, Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell) , and the franchise's signature meta-take on horror movies.
"Scream" took the horror rule book and ripped it up, with the characters aware of what would happen if they were in a horror movie, which they were (unfortunately).
But because it seems so predictable for Sidney's boyfriend, Billy Loomis (Skeet Ulrich) , to be the killer, he gets a pass for quite some time in "Scream."
But when that final act comes around, and Billy unmasks himself as the killer, it's a brilliant twist, especially when the wacky Stu Macher (Matthew Lillard) is revealed as his accomplice.
Billy's murder spree all stems from the fact that his mother abandoned him when she discovered that Sidney's mother, Maureen Prescott, was having an affair with his father.
Billy and Stu brutally killed Maureen and framed her other lover, Cotton Weary (Liev Schreiber), for her death. But when Billy targets Sidney and her friends, the plan is to frame her father for Ghostface's murder and mayhem in Woodsboro.
Thankfully, Sidney, Dewey Riley (David Arquette), and Gale Weathers (Courtney Cox) put a stop to that.
But the Ghostface mantle would live on.
Nancy Loomis and Mickey Altieri, "Scream 2" (1997)
In Stu Macher's own words, "Ya gotta have a sequel!"
Just over a year after the first film, "Scream 2" arrived in theaters with its scathing take on sequels and how they can ruin a franchise by attempting to go bigger and better — so what does Craven do? He goes bigger and better.
Yes, this one may as well be called "Scream 2: Ghostface Goes to College," but it keeps things fresh rather than constantly having the action take place in Woodsboro.
Here, Sidney tries to move on and have a normal life with a normal boyfriend, Derek (Jerry O'Connell), and fellow survivor, Randy Meeks (Jamie Kennedy).
Unfortunately, a new Ghostface surfaces and causes havoc on campus, even killing fan-favorite hero Randy.
In the movie's dramatic climax, the new killer is revealed as film geek Mickey Altieri (Timothy Olyphant), who actually wants to get caught so that he can blame horror movies for his crimes at trial.
But he isn't alone in the killings, as the mastermind this time was actually Billy's mother, Nancy Loomis (Laurie Metcalf). She wants revenge on Sidney for killing her son — even though she left him in the first place, which ultimately turned him into a murderer.
Roman Bridger, "Scream 3" (2000)
After "Scream 2," Ghostface tried to make it big in Hollywood with "Scream 3."
The franchise got even more self-referential by the third film, leaning harder into the movie-within-a-movie idea with the in-universe "Stab" franchise.
While it takes shots at movie trilogies (thanks to a posthumous video tape from Randy), the film sees the production of "Stab 3" plagued by a new Ghostface who kills various cast members and people involved with making the sequel.
As with all the "Scream" films, it's always the last person you'd suspect because the culprit is "Stab 3" director Roman Bridger. So, why is he offing his own cast members? Unsurprisingly, it all comes back to Sidney, because he's her long-lost brother!
Blimey. He was born after Sidney's mother tried to make it big in Hollywood, but was raped by producer John Milton (Lance Henriksen), and she gave Roman up due to the trauma of the incident and went home to Woodsboro.
When Roman tried to reconnect with Maureen, she rejected him, which is when he filmed her having affairs with Cotton Weary and Harold Loomis — showing the footage to Billy Loomis and persuading him to get his own revenge on Sidney's mother. Yes, Roman is secretly the mastermind behind the original trilogy!
Jill Roberts and Charlie Walker, "Scream 4" (2011)
Like any good slasher villain, the franchise rose from the dead in 2011 with "Scream 4," which sees Sidney return to Woodsboro on a book tour after a decade away from her hometown. She takes the opportunity to reconnect with her aunt Kate (Mary McDonnell) and cousin Jill Roberts (Emma Roberts).
Predictably, a brand new Ghostface rears its hooded head to make the most of Sidney's return and kicks off a new wave of murder in Woodsboro — upping the mayhem by filming each kill.
"Scream 4" rewrites the horror rule book for a new era with the finale taking place at the after-party of a "Stabathon" movie marathon. There, Jill and resident movie expert friend Charlie Walker (Rory Culkin) unmask themselves as Ghostface.
Jill's motivation stems from feeling like Sidney stole her childhood because the focus and attention was always on what she went through.
So, with a bit of movie-inspired mania, she and Charlie devised a plan where they would be the new survivors of the Ghostface killings — and get all the fame that comes along with that. But then Jill kills her accomplice in a genuinely surprising second twist because she knows that everyone loves a "sole survivor."
Ultimately, the carnage continues in the hospital when Jill discovers that Sidney survived the chaos of the after-party. Jill tries to finish the job but is killed by the hero with a defibrillator to the head, as well as a gunshot to the heart (just to be safe).
Richie Kirsch and Amber Freeman, "Scream 5" (2022)
A decade after fans last saw Ghostface in theaters, he returned in 2022's "Scream" to hunt a whole new class of teens.
"Scream 5" introduces Sam (Melissa Barerra) and Tara Carpenter (Jenna Ortega), who are at the center of the new spate of murders, largely because Sam is the illegitimate daughter of Billy Loomis.
No, she's not the one carrying out all the killings — it's actually her boyfriend, nice guy Richie Kirsch (Jack Quaid), and Tara's best friend, Amber Freeman (Mikey Madison). Their motive?
They're furious that "Stab 8" was a disaster, and want to give the writers of the movie franchise better material for the next movie. Oh yes, this one's all about toxic fandom.
Because Mindy Meeks-Martin (Jasmin Savoy Brown) dubs these events a "requel" (remake and a sequel), the film pays homage to the original by having the final climax place in the same place as the first "Scream" movie: Stu Macher's house.
Sidney and Gale get revenge on Amber for killing Dewey in the hospital by burning her alive, while Tara puts her down with a headshot. But Sam's the one to put an end to the whole thing by stabbing her now ex-boyfriend Richie over 20 times before slitting his throat.
Like father, like daughter.
Bonus round: Jason Carvey and Greg, "Scream 6" (2023)
"Scream 6" kept things fresh by reinvigorating its opening kill, which instantly set the tone for the sequel.
The opening sees Laura Crane (Samara Weaving) waiting for her date in a bar, only to get lured out to a dingy alleyway by Ghostface before being brutally carved up.
But in a "Scream" first, Ghostface immediately unmasks himself after Crane's death, revealing himself as film student Jason Carvey (Tony Revolori).
Jason goes back to his apartment and chats with his roommate Greg about their plot to kill Sam and Tara, only to find Greg's body stuffed in the fridge.
Unsurprisingly, he's murdered by the film's main Ghostface moments later. It's a truly fun way to keep audiences on their toes, that's for sure.
Detective Bailey, Ethan, and Quinn, "Scream 6" (2023)
This brings us to 2023's "Scream 6," which is basically Ghostface takes New York.
Yes, the killer makes his way to the Big Apple alongside Sam and Tara, who try to get a fresh start at college one year after their ordeal. They live with their close friend Quinn Bailey (Liana Liberato) whose father, Wayne Bailey, is a detective.
Unfortunately for the gang, the online discourse surrounding Richie and Amber has led many online to believe that Sam was actually the real Ghostface killer and framed Richie. Oh, dear.
So when a vicious new Ghostface starts slaughtering people close to Sam, she's at the top of the suspects' list.
But by the time the final showdown takes place in Richie's shrine to all things Ghostface, Woodsboro, and the "Stab" movies, it's revealed that Detective Bailey is actually Richie's father .
Not only was Bailey the one who circulated the rumor that Sam framed Richie, he even convinced his children to join him in becoming Ghostface.
Both Quinn and friend of the gang Ethan (Jack Champion) are Richie's siblings, and they're just as twisted as he is.
Tara gets in touch with her inner killer and stabs Ethan to death, while Sam executes Quinn with a headshot. But Wayne gets the special treatment.
Sam follows in her father's footsteps and dons the Ghostface robe herself, hunting the detective through the building before brutally stabbing him around 37 times — including once in the eyeball. Ouch. To be fair, he deserved it.
