Whether you’re powering a go-kart or any other type of equipment with a Predator 212 engine, you’ll need to ensure that you use the right type of oil and that you do regular maintenance checks.

Suitable engine oils: what type of oil does a predator 212 take.

As Predator 212 engines have a 4-stroke configuration, oil does not need to be mixed into the fuel. Instead, it needs to be filled into a separate oil tank. Each engine manufacturer will typically recommend a type of oil in accordance with the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) Viscosity Grade, in which the engine operates optimally.

Predator 212 engines take 10W-30 oil if the outside temperature is 32° F (0° Celsius) or above. If the outside temperature is below 32° F, a 5W-30 oil is going to be more suitable, as suggested by the manufacturer.

Therefore, in most cases, a 10W-30 engine oil would work just fine. Check the section below for the best engine oils!

Best Engine Oils For Predator 212

So, what’s the best engine oil for the Predator 212? Well, there is a wide selection of engine oils in the market and any 10W-30 oil that is high-grade will do. My preferred engine oil is the STP 4-Cycle 10W-30 Engine Oil , as it’s optimized for 4-stroke small engines like the Predator 212.

Checking the oil level on your Predator 212 is simple and straightforward. All you need to do is use the dipstick to see what the oil level inside the engine is. Follow the guide below for more information.

  • Ensure Engine is Off – Make sure that when you check the oil level, the engine is completely shut down and is placed on level ground – on a table or floor would be optimal)
  • Locate the Dipstick – The dipstick is located on the side where the pull start handle is facing. You can identify the dipstick by the yellow cover (use the image above for reference.
  • Close the Fuel Valve – Close the fuel valve, which is a lever that is located right underneath the choke
  • Clean the Dipstick – Now unscrew the dipstick by turning it counterclockwise. Use a cloth to clean the oil off it, as you’ll need to get an accurate reading. Ensure that the cloth is lint-free. 
  • Check Oil Level – To check the oil level, simply reinsert the dipstick without threading it – it should only touch the bottom of the dipstick thread. Now check the reading and compare it with the oil level markings in the illustration above.
  • Reinsert the Dipstick – If there is no need to top the oil up, then you can proceed to thread the dipstick by turning it clockwise. There is no need to clean the dipstick this time, before inserting it. If you need to fill oil into the engine , go to the next step. 

Filling Oil

You’ll always need to make sure that you run your engine with enough engine oil. If your Predator 212 doesn’t have enough oil, you may see smoke emitting from the engine, as it lacks proper lubrication and internal components heat up. 

To fill oil into the engine follow the steps above on checking oil levels . At the step before you insert the dipstick back into the engine, top it up with your preferred engine oil. After you’ve topped it up, make sure that the oil levels are full as this will ensure your engine runs optimally. 

If you’re changing your oil or topping up too much oil, you need to drain it. Excess engine oil may cause it to leak due to excess pressure. Follow the next step on draining oil . 

Draining Oil 

To drain the oil out of a Predator 212 engine, you’ll need a 10mm (M6) socket or torque wrench and a bowl or drain pan to collect the oil. Follow the step-by-step guide below.

  • Place Engine on Table – When draining the oil, ensure that the Predator engine is off and place it on a table (a floor won’t work). Make sure the engine is looking out slightly so that the oil can drip down.
  • Place a Bowl or Drain Pan Underneath – Now, place an empty bowl or drain pan underneath the engine (it should be underneath the oil drain plug, so it can collect the oil. 
  • Locate the Oil Drain Plug – As you can see from the images above, the oil drain plug is located underneath the dipstick. It’s a 10mm (M6) bolt. 
  • Drain the Oil Out – Remove the M6 bolt with a suitable socket. Do this slowly, as oil will start pouring into the bowl. You want to tip the engine slightly to ensure that all of the oil is drained. 
  • Close the Oil Drain Plug – Once all of the oil is drained you can place the oil drain plug back into place by re-threading it. Make sure that the oil plug is clean; it’s best to wipe off any excess oil. 

Draining the oil from a Predator 212 engine is essentially combining the process of draining the oil and then filling it with new oil . Below is a quick guide on how to change the oil on a Predator engine.

  • Place Engine on Table – First, ensure that the engine is switched off and that the fuel valve is closed. Place the engine onto a table with the edge of the engine sticking out slightly.
  • Place a Bowl or Drain Pan Underneath – Place an empty bowl or drain pan under the engine, where the oil can be collected.
  • Locate the Oil Drain Plug – The drain plug is an M6 bolt (10mm). It’s located on the bottom underneath the oil dipstick.
  • Drain the Oil Out – Remove the M6 bolt with a socket and let the old engine oil drain into the bowl or drain pan. Make sure that all of the oil is out by lifting the back of the engine.
  • Close the Oil Drain Plug – Now, close the oil drain plug by screwing it back into the thread. Ensure that any excess oil from the drain plug is removed. 
  • Remove Dipstick – Remove the oil dipstick and place it to the side. It’s best to clean it once you have removed it from the engine. 
  • Fill in New Oil – Now, fill in your preferred engine oil. For the Predator 212 engine, I prefer the STP 4-Cycle 10W-30 Engine Oil as it’s great for 4-cycle engines. 
  • Check Oil Level – Keep checking the oil level, to ensure that it’s filled to the optimal level. This may take a few tries in the beginning, but you’ll get used to it fairly quickly. 
  • Reinsert the Dipstick – Now, simply re-thread the dipstick back into position and check that it’s tightly secured.

But they will be when the parts wear down properly. This initial wearing through friction is known as “breaking in” the engine.

The most crucial feature you need to pay close attention to while choosing the engine oil for your generator is its viscosity. 

In most cases, you will need an SAE 10W-30 oil type. The 10W-30 oil from Honda (1,767+ Reviews) is the best one in this category, but it’s pricey. We think that it is the best fit for most generators.

I would like to input something here. I own some oil and gas wells here in Texas. We have to compress our gas and to do this we use a 22 HP Predator engine, it runs 24/7 on natural gas pulling a Quincy compressor with 150 psi.

My current engine is as stated above a 22 HP Predator which has been in service for 30 months. It has an added engine oil cooler because Texas summers are hot, and also an added bigger oil filter.

I run Shell Rotella T6 5W30 and add as instructed Lucas oil stabilizer. Never have changed oil just add as needed. Two times I have had an oil leak and all oil lost, the shut down shorted out within the first 6 months of use and has been disconnected, and all that was done was refill and start up.

I feel that the synthetic oil is the reason for this engines long life and survivability!

I have a 3 month old predator 4550 inverter generator. this is my 3rd predator generator and my second 4550 inverter. The first 4550 had the o2 sensor shut down activated and wouldn’t run though it was outside where no o2 could build up. I exchanged it for another 4550. I’ve just did its second oil change and though the oil level is full it runs then dies giving me a low oil alert then shuts down! Wtf!! Any help here would be appreciated.

Correct amount of oil/tilting a predator 212

I am replacing a Tech OHH60 with a predator 212 on a Yerf Dog cart (think it is a model Yerf-Dog 3203). My question is now that the engine is tilted how much oil to add. If I fill to the full level on the dipstick I have added more oil than is recommended and the oil level is higher relative to the crankshaft. Appreciate comments anyone would have.

Tilt It is tilting about 18°. The Manual states that it holds 16 fluid ounces. I am new to this form and struggling to add a picture (asking for a URL).  

I always have ran 16 oz tilted. It never hurt a thing. I guess if you're racing and desperate for every fraction of a HP you're supposed to run 14 oz. I just did it because there's 2 oil changes in a quart of oit and no leftovers.

Whenever Engine break-ins are brought into discussions, there is a lot of controversies. Everyone seems to have a different suggestion about how exactly should it be done. Some don’t even bother about it and run it full throttle right out of the box. Whatever be the case, the discussions are always spicy when it comes to break-in.

The safest thing to do is to practice what the owner’s manual tells you to do. In Predator 212’s case that will be Harbor Freight’s Predator 212 manual.

According to the manual, the break-in period will last till 3 hours of usage. In this period, the engine should not be operated under heavy load and maximum speed.

That is what Harbor Freight recommends, but there are some “best practices” for breaking in the Predator 212 or any other small engines like Honda GX200 that you can follow.

Predator 212 break-in (Step by Step)

  • If the engine has no oil, add the conventional 10W30 oil (not synthetic).
  • Add fuel, if the fuel tank isn’t already filled.
  • Start the engine and let it idle for 10-15 minute.
  • After 10-15 minutes of idling, drain the oil and replace it with new oil.
  • If the engine is not already mounted on your Go-Kart/Minibike, mount it.
  • Drive your Go-kat around on low speed (not full throttle) for a while.
  • Change the Oil (again use a conventional oil)
  • Take your Go-kart for another ride, this time a faster than before.
  • Finally, drain out the oil and put on the oil you will normally drive with (synthetic or conventional) and you’re ready to go.

You might be thinking, what does break-in does, or what does it even mean?

The internal parts of any new engine are not adjusted to each other initially. The main purpose of engine break-in is to allow the piston ring to seat properly.

1. Idling Initially

Initially, before you take out your go-kart for a ride, let the engine idle for 10-15 minutes. Now as I stated at the very start, there is no one method of engine break-in that is universally accepted. Some people don’t idle the engine for more than 30 seconds and they are still able to break in.

We recommend idling the engine with conventional oil and then changing the oil once the engine is stopped. When the oil is hot, it comes out easily as compared to cold oil.

We take the initial oil out because the engine comes from the factory with small metal pieces still inside the engine known as metal shavings. If we idle the engine and then drain the oil, most of the metal shavings come out with the oil.

2. Driving at medium to low speed

After idling the engine for 10 minutes and changing the oil, it is recommended to drive at low to medium speed for your first ride. As stated in the owner’s manual, the engine shouldn’t be driven at full speed during the break-in period.

After your first ride, you should again change the oil, so that the remaining metal shaving comes out. It is best practice to keep replacing oil until you can’t see any more metal shavings, but at least 2-3 oil changes are recommended.

3. Driving Full Throttle

After your first ride and change in oil, you should now drive at medium-high speed for a while. After that, you can change the oil to the preferred oil and send it full throttle.

Which Oil should you use for Engine Break

10W30 oil is the recommended oil for Predator 212 , 5W30 oil can be used if you live in a colder region. During the break-in period, it is best practice to use conventional oil instead of full synthetic oil.

Synthetic oil is slippery in comparison to conventional oil and will prevent wear which will further prevent the ring to settle. Once your engine is broken-in then you can change to any synthetic oil of your liking.

Modified Engine

As you will know, Predator 212’s can be heavily modified . A question that comes up a lot is, whether to break in before modifying or after modifying the engine.

The idea behind breaking in is to make the piston ring settle in its position. If you’re not going to take out your piston, there will be no need to break in again.

start with 14 to be safe the engine will puke out what it doesnt want into catch can .

Use 14-16 oz of oil you will not find any power using 12 why take the risk. There is no measurable power gain between 16 oz and 12oz I have done back to back dyno runs to test this.

HP gain or loss was simply a statement to assure racers they were not leaving anything on the table by running an adequate amount of oil. Findings vary, My engines never blow any appreciable amount of oil out. A full day of racing oil level would not go down 1/2 an ounce, we drain into a measured clean containor, so oil can be inspected.  

We have ran as little as 12oz with no problem. However we discovered that with 14oz the engine ran cooler with no loss of power. With 16oz it was the same as with 14 and nothing in the catch can. At 18oz we incurred some power drop and had about an ounce and a half in the catch can. So we run 14oz now as there was no advantage in running 12oz. If you put in 16oz or less and you blow out more than a 1/2oz, something is wrong with your engine.

I pre-measure my oil. Get a the mini Gatorade bottles it says 12 fl oz it comes out to around 12.2 oz. once I get to the racetrack I have 4 bottles with me pre measured and ready to go.

motor mounts generally come in three "degrees"....one is flat (0 degrees), the you have a 7/8 degree mount and then a 15 degree mount. the degrees moves the front of the motor down and the rear of the motor up when it's mounted in the chassis. now, with the oil...everyone is going to say what amount they use and you will find that it varies according to the track they are on, what motor the have....and what they prefer. best advice is to use between 14-16 ounces of your favorite and keep track of what you pull out! if you use 14 and pull 12 out and the engine felt like it was a little hot, then increase...if you use 14 and pull out 14, then your doing good! I run 16 ounces of royal purple...never have any oiling issues. I change it out once every two race nights (I run on asphalt). I always measure what I take out so that I know what is going on inside the motor. using oil? time for a rebuild!! no oil loss? everything is working right!

I run 16oz with a 15 degree mount but get a little more back out because of my tilly carb,they tend to dump some fuel.  

I run gas, so I've never really had that problem...but your right....alky has a tendency to get into the oil. but you should still keep track of what you take out. depending on your engine, it will give you a good indicator of how much fuel is getting into the oil....and regardless of the type of fuel, it is diluting the oil, which is not a good thing!
