Do you have sea legs and a sea belly to match? The River View Yacht Club (RVYC) is hosting a series of Sunday-morning fundraiser break- fast buffets. “Our community is in the midst of trying to redevelop our waterfront and to encourage people in our community to once again get involved in boating and nautical activities,” said John Hunt, Past Commodore of the RVYC. “While the proceeds raised go to fund our 2017 Commodore’s Ball, the Sunday Breakfast Buffet is a great opportunity for in- dividuals and families to stop in and find out what we have to offer.” Open to the public, this full-spread breakfast could be your introduction to a whole new circle of nautical friends.

We were invited out for some Friday evening drinks on the Ottawa River at the RYC and boy oh boy I'm glad we accept the offer. What a cool club! The view of the water is more a view of the docks, as the club seems to have a good amount of members. The patio is large and covered, but boy oh boy as the sun set did we ever get BLASTED with rays. The service is a little chaotic as you place your order inside at the kitchen, but then when they come out with your food the servers seem to consistently have a bit of trouble finding the people that ordered. Lots of plates of food flying around as they figure out where things need to go. And the food itself? Pretty good! It falls in line with standard Ottawa River fare. Think River Cafe or Webbers. Fried fish, fried basically anything else you can think of, prime rib and burgers. The bar is packed, and with only one bartender was a little slow in getting drinks. But that's ok because all of the members are super friendly and the old school atmosphere really sets you at ease. Long story short, I left seriously considering joining the club, and we don't even have a boat! The membership dues are really inexpensive, and if you're looking for another spot on the Ottawa River, this might be a good option for you!

Local News | Shirley Wild: Long Beach Yacht Club celebrates its 95th anniversary

river view yacht club menu

As the 150 or so guests arrived, they were greeted by the elegant table décor of black cloths and gold sparkling runners. The visual impact was highlighted by pillar centerpieces with golden flowers suspended within.

Dining included tray-served delectable hors d’ oeuvres during the cocktail hour. This taste-treat was followed by seafood and standing prime rib stations. Decadently delicious desserts topped off the calorie count.

The celebration underscored the impact that the club has had, not only in its impressive boating legacy, but also in its active involvement in the local community for nearly a century. Among the various charitable organizations and community initiatives, the club has demonstrated a strong commitment to giving back, including the 1932, 1984 and (soon to be held) 2028 Olympics.

In its beginnings (1927), the Long Beach Area Chamber of Commerce appointed a special interest group — the chamber’s Alamitos Bay Committee — to develop a yacht harbor and yacht club in the Alamitos Bay. Richard Loynes, the first LBYC commodore in 1929, was instrumental in activities of both committees. Thus, the official beginning of LBYC.

From hosting fundraising events to volunteering at local community centers, LBYC has made a significant impact on the lives of those in need.

Commodore Scott Dixon greeted the crowd at the event.

“As the club celebrates its 95th anniversary,” he said, “it continues to uphold its values of sportsmanship, camaraderie and service to the community, setting a shining example for yacht clubs everywhere.

“Also, as one of the oldest yacht clubs in Southern California,” he added, “LBYC continues its long-standing tradition of hosting prestigious sailing events and regattas, attracting top sailors from around the world.”

It has also contributed to developing young sailors through its youth sailing programs. LBYC has a tradition of collecting toys and checks benefitting the children at the Stramski Children’s Development Center at MemorialCare Miller Children’s & Women’s Hospital Long Beach. For more than 20 years, members have brought donations to the wives of past commodores, a group known as the Sand Dollars, during the annual sell-out Christmas luncheon.

Creating a pathway to the water, LBYC members have generously donated, through the Long Beach Sailing Foundation, to supply a fleet of Soling sail boats on which people of all ages and walks of life are taught to sail. Annual STEM programs are open to schools and service organizations. The fleet of Catalina 37’s are used for the annual Heroes Regatta, hosting and coaching armed services and first responders. Teams are formed from each service branch and they race for the honor of the Heroes Cup. More than 250 participants, families and volunteers are treated to a day on the water and at the pool.

A Catalina 37 is dedicated to the Boys & Girls Clubs of Long Beach, YMCA of Greater Long Beach and other organizations for 16 weeks during the summer. The youth are taught to sail and experience live racing outside the Alamitos Bay, off the shores of Long Beach. High School sailing teams are hosted by LBYC, offering scholarships for those in need.

Seen at the scene: Commodore Scott and Kendra Dixon, Vice Commodore Lisa Meier and Douglas Pye, Rear Commodore Robert and Paula Piercy, Fleet Captain and Long Beach Sailing Foundation Director Tom and Patricia Camp, Jr. Staff Commodore and Long Beach Sailing Foundation Director Blair Carty, Event Chairs Laura Utterbach and Cheri Bush, Jeff Hoffman, Bob Lane, LBYC Judges Advocate Shannon Gallagher, Stu and Paula Ledsam, Hon.
