Catamaran & Boat Trips in Malaga: schedules and prices

Taking a boat trip around Malaga and its bay has become a must , an essential attraction for any traveler or tourist who comes to the city. In addition, thanks to the excellent climate of the city, it can be done almost all year round. Take a Catamaran in Malaga for Sightseeing Cruises & Boat Trips is an alternative way of contemplating the city, its profiles and its most representative buildings.

There are many options to get to know Malaga from the sea, from quiet rides in small boats, tourist boats, sailboats to catamarans, party-oriented boats or renting a boat for the most daring.

Next, we detail the companies that offer catamarans in Malaga, the best boat trips in Malaga and useful information to be able to choose the one that suits you best.

The opening of Muelle Uno has further promoted these activities, with all the companies located in the area of the port of Malaga in front of the Center Pompidou Málaga.

All the boat trips around Malaga follow the same pattern: one hour long (or 90 minutes in high season), with a variable route (east-west) depending on the sea , but which will allow us to observe Malaga from another point of view. It is a delight to observe the Ferris wheel, the Cathedral, the Alcazaba or the Gibralfaro castle from the sea.

How much does it cost to rent a yacht in Malaga?

The price of a boat charter in Malaga is different based on a number of factors such as the time of year, how many people are on board the vessel and of course, the size and type of vessel you choose. Below are some average prices of a Malaga yacht charter by boat type.

 €4,865/week for 10 people.

€375/day in the high season and €275/day in the low season for 6 people.

€430/day for 12 people.

€8,000/week for 12 people.

€550/day for 2 people.

€4,598/week for 10 people.

What is the best time of year for a boat charter in Malaga?

The best time to embark on a boat charter in Malaga is between May and October when the weather is at its warmest and the precipitation levels are low. The hottest averages are in the summer with 28°C in July and August however, it’s still warm enough to swim in the winter! That’s right, Malaga is warm and sunny year-round and if you want to avoid crowds we recommend visiting in May or September. It will be slightly cooler at around 23°C, but you can still go for a swim and you’ll get better deals on Malaga yacht rentals.

What can I see and do while on a yacht charter in Malaga?

There’s a reason that Malaga is one of Spain’s most sought-after sailing destinations—and that’s because there’s so much to see and do! Whether you want a lazy beach day or a cultural excursion, you’ll find what you’re looking for in this spectacular city. Here are some of our favourite activities to add to your Malaga sailing itinerary.

  • Visit the Alcazaba and Gibralfaro castles: These two ancient fortresses sit atop a hill overlooking Malaga city and offer stunning views of the surrounding area. The Alcazaba was built by the Moorish rulers of Spain in the 11th century, while the Gibralfaro was added later on by the Christian king, Alfonso XI. Visitors can explore the remains of both castles, including their extensive gardens and ramparts.
  • Stroll around El Palo: This traditional fishing village is located just east of Malaga city and makes for a pleasant day trip. Wander around the village's narrow streets, stop for some seafood at one of its many restaurants and enjoy views of the Mediterranean Sea.
  • Sail to Isla de Graciosa: Just off the coast of Malaga is Isla de Graciosa, a small island that makes for a great day trip. While on the island you can enjoy the tranquil atmosphere of its sandy beaches and crystal-clear waters.
  • Visit La Concepción botanical gardens: Located just outside of Malaga city centre, these gardens are home to over 5,000 species of plants and flowers from all over the world.
  • Explore Malaga's Old Town: The Old Town is one of the best places to see in Malaga if you're interested in its history and culture. Walk around its winding streets, visit its museums and churches and soak up views of its beautiful architecture.
  • Take a day trip: Head to nearby destinations like Granada, Seville and Ronda. If you have time, you can even visit Gilbraltar!
  • Soak up the sun on one of Malaga’s beaches: Playa de la Malagueta is a popular spot for sunbathing and swimming, while El Palo is ideal for windsurfing and kitesurfing. Other iconic beaches include Playa de los Locos, El Chorro and La Barrosa.
  • Go scuba diving: Try your luck at El Chorrillo de Marbella. This incredible dive spot is full of vibrant colours from the surrounding coral reef and is home to an abundance of unique species such as moray eels, cuttlefish, crabs and barracudas. For more experienced divers, head over to Cala de Mijas and explore its many underwater caves and tunnels. This spectacular spot offers a great opportunity to observe all kinds of marine life up close, including sea bass, moray eels, octopus and much more. You'll even find some amazing wrecks from World War II!

Should I have a skipper on board my private yacht rental in Malaga?

Our large fleet of yacht rentals in Malaga includes both skippered vessels as well as those without a skipper, so you can find the perfect one for your boat trip. Even if you have a licence to sail we always recommend a skippered vessel for a more relaxing and worry-free holiday. Skippers will handle all of the logistics like docking, anchoring and sailing the vessel so you can spend more time with the ones that you love. The best part about having a skipper present is the fact that they are usually locals, so they can give you recommendations and help you see everything on your travel itinerary, and more.

So, what are you waiting for? Sail in the capable hands of a skipper and allow them to be your private tour guide around Malaga.

What type of boat should I choose for my Malaga yacht rental?

While browsing the Scansail website, you might be wondering which type of boat you should choose for your yacht rental in Malaga, and the answer to this will depend on the amount of time you plan to be out on the water. For a shorter holiday of less than a week, you shouldn’t need more than a RIB or a motorboat, which are usually chartered by the day. A longer holiday of a week or more will require more amenities and accommodations, such as a kitchen, bathroom and bedrooms. Catamarans and yachts are spacious vessels usually rented by the week, perfect for a longer holiday with family and friends. For people who like sailing for sport, we’d recommend a sailboat. If you’re a novice sailor but still want an authentic sailing experience, a skippered sailboat is a fantastic option.

Find the perfect vessel for your sailing trip in Malaga with Scansail, and have the holiday of a lifetime.

Table of Contents

Malaga Boat Trips: Best Catamaran Option

This boat trip is the most popular option if you’re looking for a short cruise on a catamaran. In this case, it’s not just any cruise, but one that’s perfectly timed for a sunset, and with a free glass of cava included in your ticket, you’re in for an experience to remember.

The boat leaves from the main port in Malaga (Muelle Uno), only thing you need to do is to spot the boat with the name Mundo Marino.

Once you find the boat, just show your ticket and you will be allowed on board and served your glass of cava. The whole trip lasts 1.5 hours and you get to see the coastline of Malaga from the most beautiful vantage point while admiring the stunning sunset.

The boat is very modern and spacious, with lots of seating options, or you can just sit on the net and watch the sea from there. It’s also suitable for wheelchair users.

  • FREE cancellation up to 24 hours before the trip, giving you lots of flexibility in case your plans change
  • Reserve now and PAY LATER option for this trip
  • FREE glass of cava on board
  • Duration of 1.5 hours
  • Bar service on board
  • Available 5 times per week

Malaga Boat Trips: Other Catamaran Options

If you want to see more options available for a catamaran boat trip from Malaga, here are a couple of other ones that run during the day, not timed for the sunset.

OPTION 1: Malaga Bay Catamaran Sailing Cruise

  • Free cancellation, up to 24 hours before the trip
  • Book now and pay later option
  • Duration of 1 to 1.5 hours for the whole trip
  • Departures 6 times per week
  • 4 departures times per day, so you can select one that works best for you
  • English and Spanish-speaking instructors on board
  • Mundo Marino modern catamaran with all the facilities you need (the same used for the sunset cruise)

OPTION 2: Malaga Catamaran Cruise with Optional Swimming Stop

  • Departures up to 7 times per week
  • Multiple departure times per day
  • Optional for swimming stop (if option selected)

malaga boat trips

Hop-On Hop-Off Malaga Boat

If you want to explore Malaga’s coastline on a hop on and hop off boat, instead of a bus, you also have the option. The pick-up for this boat trip is in Malaga Marina (Muelle Uno), and I listed all the details for this trip below:

  • Get your tickets here
  • Audio commentary in English and Spanish
  • Usually quite busy with limited seats available
  • 1 hour boat trip
  • Free cancellation up to 24 hours before the chosen travel date
  • Arrive at Muelle Uno 1 at least 15 minutes ahead of the scheduled departure

I don’t have personal experience with these trips, but have seen them passing plenty of times they are usually very crowded and you end up feeling like a proper tourist once you get on board.

I personally think the other catamaran options are far better value for money.

Malaga Boat Trips: Frequent Questions

What are the best areas to do boat trips in malaga.

If you want to rent a boat to see the coastline of Malaga, you have fairly limited options for that in Malaga Marina as it’s used mainly for catamarans, sailboats and bigger cruise ships that dock here. You would have better luck looking at the options at nearby Benalmadena Marina.

Can I get seasick on catamaran cruises from Malaga?

It depends on the time of the year, in spring and autumn the sea may be a little rougher, and even though the waves don’t look that intimidating, you really feel each one passing the boat. I would recommend taking some travel sickness medicine if you’re worried about getting sick on the boat.

Are there any party boats in Malaga?

Yes there are, but the options are limited and the reviews may vary quite a bit!

Can you get a dolphin watching cruise from Malaga?

I would not recommend this as nobody can guarantee whether or not you will see any dolphins.

On my trip in September (pictures used in this post), we actually saw a whole pack of dolphins including the babies, which was completely unheard of for that time of the year.

Dolphins normally swim by the coastline in the early hours of the morning, when no boats circle the area, so to spot a pack of them in the wild is not as common as tour operators like you think.

Catamaran excursions in Malaga, dolphin sighting and boat trips

Guide about catamaran excursions and boat trips

I had to rewrite this blog post because of the missing ferry from Malaga to Marbella (watertaxi was its name), not available anymore. While doing a little research I found a ferry that connects Fuengirola and Benalmadena and also found interesting catamaran excursions from Malaga.

I think many of you who are looking for a boat trip from the Port of Malaga might like it, so I will share all the information I have gathered.

Remember to be prepared for the occasion. If you go in winter, it’s best to wear warm clothes, but in summer you can’t forget your bathing suit, towel and a good protective lotion for the sun. Depending on the type of excursion you choose, the date and the state of the sea, the captain will allow you to stop for a refreshing swim in the Mediterranean.

Dolphin spotting on catamaran in Benalmádena Málaga

Personas disfrutando de delfines que nadan alrededor del barco

There is a high probability of seeing dolphins in their natural environment and we always try to spot them, although we must clarify that sightings are not guaranteed.

DO YOU WANT TO SEE DOLPHINS IN THEIR NATURAL HABITAT IN MÁLAGA?

Catamarán Dragón de Oro offers you the possibility to see dolphins and other species in their natural habitat, also enjoying a pleasant boat trip through the waters of the Mediterranean Sea, leaving the port of Benalmadena. The oceans are full of different animal species, which cannot be seen unless we go deep into them, but many of these can be seen on the surface, and that is why taking a boat trip is the safest and most pleasant way to observe them.

The closeness of the Costa del Sol of Malaga, with the Strait of Gibraltar, does of this corner a step place for many marine animals, between that we find different species of cetacean, like the dolphins, the most popular. But the fact is that in addition to seeing dolphins, there exists the possibility of seeing other animals varieties like marine turtles, mfish and shoals of fish and even sea birds.
