Updated on March 17, 2020 by Lauren Lim

Sooooo Rob got a shiny new gadget! He’s been dying to get a Phantom drone for years, but held off because each model was missing some key feature that he just had to have. Then the Phantom 4 was announced and BOOM! It had everything and he went for it.

The box showed up early, so we abandoned all previous plans and made a video of me opening it up. Thrilling!! But yes, if you are interested in these snazzy things, and want to see what comes in the box, have a gander at the video!

DJI Phantom 4: Unboxing and first flight footage

In this video I share my DJI Phantom 4 Unboxing and first flight footage from the Atlantic Coast in rural Maine.

The Phantom 4 quadcopter is the latest model UAV drone by DJI. It is capable of recording 4K video with an impressive gimball stabilization system which enables stunning aerial video footage. It is also currently the safest drone on the market due to its collision avoidance system. I have been eagerly awaiting the opportunity to get my hands on this device. I plan to document and capture unique, aerial perspectives of the epic landscapes that I encounter on my travels. The Phantom 4 will make the perfect addition to my photography and video toolkit.

As you'll see in the video, it takes a little time to set up and get familiar with the aircraft. I don't recommend rushing through this process as it is very important to get right. Especially with the compass calibration and satellite detection. With that said, it is relatively easy to get fired up and airborne in a short time. Also, be sure to start slow and get comfortable with the controls before tearing off into the horizon.

I am amazed with the video quality! Moreover, the flight controls, responsiveness of the drone and the smoothness of the gimbal operation are all very impressive. This drone is a lot of fun to fly! Take a look at the footage and let me know what you think. Also, consider Subscribing to my YouTube channel if you would like to see more stunning North American landscapes from the air. In the coming videos I will be exploring the breathtaking island of Newfoundland .

Unboxing and Setup

Congratulations on your new DJI Phantom 4! Let’s start by unboxing and setting up your drone so that you can get ready to take to the skies.

When you first open the box, you will find the Phantom 4 drone, the remote controller, propellers, a battery charger, and various cables and accessories. Start by carefully removing each item from the packaging and laying them out on a clean, flat surface.

The first step is to attach the propellers to the drone. Each propeller is labeled with either “CW” (clockwise) or “CCW” (counterclockwise). Match the propellers to the corresponding motors on the drone and twist them in a clockwise direction until they lock into place. Make sure they are securely fastened before proceeding.

Next, locate the battery compartment on the back of the drone and insert the fully charged battery. Push it gently until it clicks into place. The battery indicator lights on the drone will illuminate, indicating the battery level. It is important to always start with a fully charged battery to ensure a longer flight time.

Basic Flight Controls

Mastering the basic flight controls of your DJI Phantom 4 is essential to ensure a smooth and controlled flying experience. Understanding how to maneuver the drone accurately will allow you to capture stunning aerial shots with ease. Let’s explore the basic flight controls of the Phantom 4:

1. Takeoff and Landing: To take off, press the takeoff button on the DJI Go app or the remote controller. The motors will start, and the drone will ascend to a hover. To land, slowly descend the drone until it touches the ground. Use the throttle stick to control the descent rate and ensure a smooth landing.

2. Throttle Control: The throttle control, also known as the left stick on the remote controller, is used to control the drone’s altitude. Pushing the throttle stick forward increases the altitude, while pulling it backward decreases the altitude. Use small adjustments for a gradual and controlled ascent or descent.

3. Yaw Control: The yaw control, located on the left stick, rotates the drone clockwise or counterclockwise. Moving the stick to the left rotates the drone counterclockwise, while moving it to the right rotates it clockwise. Use the yaw control to change the direction the drone is facing.

4. Roll and Pitch Control: The roll and pitch controls, located on the right stick, allow you to move the drone horizontally. Pushing the right stick forward or backward controls the pitch, which moves the drone forward or backward. Moving the right stick left or right controls the roll, which moves the drone sideways.

5. Intelligent Flight Modes: The Phantom 4 offers various intelligent flight modes that automate certain flight maneuvers. These include modes such as ActiveTrack, TapFly, and Waypoints. Familiarize yourself with the specific controls and settings related to these modes to take advantage of their unique capabilities.

6. Gimbal Control: The gimbal control allows you to adjust the camera’s angle during flight. Use the dedicated gimbal control buttons on the remote controller to tilt the camera up or down. This enables you to frame your shots and capture different perspectives without changing the drone’s position.

7. Emergency Stop: In case of an emergency or loss of control, the Phantom 4 comes equipped with an emergency stop function. Press and hold the flight pause button on the remote controller to stop the motors immediately and safely bring the drone to a halt.

8. Flight Mode Selection: The Phantom 4 offers different flight modes, including P mode, S mode, and A mode. P mode, or Positioning mode, is the default mode that combines GPS, visual, and ultrasonic positioning for stable and precise flight. S mode, or Sport mode, unleashes the drone’s maximum speed and agility for more dynamic maneuvers. A mode, or Attitude mode, disables GPS positioning and relies solely on the drone’s sensors for control.

Understanding and practicing these basic flight controls will give you the confidence and ability to fly your DJI Phantom 4 smoothly and precisely. Experiment with different movements, practice hovering at different altitudes, and gradually explore more advanced flight techniques as you become more comfortable with the controls.

Taking Off and Landing

Knowing how to take off and land your DJI Phantom 4 safely and accurately is fundamental to a successful flying experience. Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced pilot, understanding the proper procedures for takeoff and landing is essential. Let’s explore the steps for taking off and landing your Phantom 4:

1. Pre-flight Check: Before taking off, ensure that you have completed the pre-flight checklist outlined earlier in this guide. Check the battery level, inspect the propellers, and ensure that the drone is properly calibrated and ready for flight.

2. Find a Suitable Takeoff Location: Choose an open area free from obstacles and people, preferably a level surface with minimal wind. Avoid launching your drone from surfaces that could interfere with the gimbal or propellers, such as tall grass or loose gravel.

3. Power on the Drone and Remote Controller: Press and hold the power button on the drone until the lights start flashing. Then, turn on the remote controller by pressing and holding its power button until the LED lights illuminate.

4. Establish a Connection: Ensure that the drone and the remote controller are properly connected. Check the DJI Go app on your mobile device for a stable connection and a live video feed from the drone’s camera. Confirm that the GPS signal is strong, as indicated by the GPS icon on the screen.

5. Auto Takeoff (Optional): If your Phantom 4 has an auto takeoff feature, you can initiate the process by pressing the takeoff button on the DJI Go app or the remote controller. The drone will ascend to a safe altitude and hover in a stationary position.

6. Manual Takeoff: If your drone does not have an auto takeoff feature or if you prefer manual control, you can take off manually by smoothly pushing the throttle stick upward. Gradually increase the throttle to avoid any sudden jerks or rapid ascents.

7. Fly in a Hover: Once your drone is airborne, allow it to hover in a stable position for a few moments. Ensure that it is responding correctly to your control inputs and that it remains stable in the air. This will give you the opportunity to make any necessary adjustments before starting your flight.

8. Flight Mode Selection: If desired, switch to the flight mode appropriate for your desired flying experience. P mode is recommended for most situations, as it provides stability and GPS position holding. S mode is best for faster flights and more dynamic movements, while A mode offers manual control without GPS assistance.

9. Landing Preparation: Before landing, ensure that you have enough remaining battery power for a safe descent. Plan your landing spot and check the area for any potential hazards or obstacles.

10. Manual Landing: To land manually, slowly reduce the throttle by pulling the throttle stick downward. Descend the drone in a controlled manner, gradually decreasing its altitude. Aim for a smooth touchdown on a level surface.

11. Auto Landing (Optional): If your Phantom 4 has an auto landing feature, you can initiate it by pressing the landing button on the DJI Go app or the remote controller. The drone will automatically descend and land on its own. Make sure to monitor the landing process and be ready to take control if needed.

12. Post-flight Checks: After landing, power off the drone and remote controller. Conduct a visual inspection of the drone, checking for any damage or abnormalities. After a successful flight, it’s also a good practice to recharge the batteries and prepare for your next adventure.

By following these steps for taking off and landing your DJI Phantom 4, you can ensure safe operations and a smooth flying experience. Remember to always be mindful of your surroundings, follow local regulations, and prioritize the safety of yourself and others when operating your drone.

Navigating the Phantom 4

The DJI Phantom 4 offers a range of navigation options that allow you to control its flight path and explore the world from above. Understanding how to navigate your drone efficiently is key to capturing the best aerial footage. Let’s explore some essential techniques for navigating your Phantom 4:

DJI Phantom 4 Features & Specifications Reviewed Continued

Dji phantom 4 pro v2.0 obstacle avoidance.

The Phantom Pro V2 has 5 directions of obstacle sensing technology comprising of stereo vision and infrared sensors. These sensors and smart software, allow the Phantom 4 Pro to avoid obstacles during flight.

The Phantom 4 Pro V2 vision system is constantly scanning for obstacles allowing the quadcopter to avoid obstacles by going over, around or hovering in front. If the Phantom 4 Pro V2 cannot find a route around the obstacle, then it will stop and hover in front of the obstacle.

Now, the stereo vision and infrared system only work in P-Mode (Positioning).  There is no obstacle detection in Attitude or Sports mode.

In Return to Home mode, obstacle sensing will also work.

What Sensors Does The Phantom 4 V2.0 Use For Obstacle Sensing And Collision Avoidance?

The Phantom 4 Pro V2 utilize the GPS, stereo vision system and infrared system to stabilize the drone, avoid obstacle and track moving subjects. The Phantom 4 Pro obstacle sensing and collision avoidance technology main components are the Vision System located on the front, rear and bottom of the drone.

This includes 3 x stereo vision sensors and 4 ultrasonic sensors. The Phantom Pro Vision System uses ultrasound and image data to help the drone maintain its current position, allowing for precision indoor flying. The infrared sensing system consists of 2 x 3D infrared modules on both sides of the Phantom 4 Pro.

What Is The Phantom 4 Pro V2.0 Obstacle Detection Range?

The below image shows you the Phantom 4 Pro V2 obstacle detection range around the drone including the underside. It must be noted from the below image that there isn’t a full 360 degree of obstacle detection.

Phantom 4 Pro V2 Obstacle Detection Range

NOTE : The lighting conditions have to be sufficient for the stereo vision system to work. There are other conditions where the obstacle sensing may not work. You can find these in the Phantom 4 Pro manuals, which come with your quadcopter.

Obstacle detection and collision avoidance is fascinating technology and you can read further on the latest obstacle detection and collision avoidance drones here .

DJI Phantom 4 Pro V2.0 Return To Home Safety Feature Reviewed

The Return to Home (RTH) function will bring the Phantom 4 Pro back to the last recorded home point.

If the Phantom 4 Pro has a strong GPS signal before takeoff, the Home Point will be location from where the quadcopter was launched.

The quadcopter will automatically return to the last recorded home point. The Phantom 4 Pro can identify obstacles 300 meters (984 feet) in front during the return to home point.

The are 3 types of Return to Home;

Failsafe RTH: If the Home point was successfully recorded, the Failsafe RTH will be automatically activated, if the remote control signal is lost for more than 3 seconds.

The Phantom 4 Pro V2 can plan its return route and retrace its original flight route home. If the Phantom 4 Pro regains signal connection with the Remote Controller, then the quadcopter will hover waiting for pilot commands.

Smart RTH: This is initiated by the Pilot tapping ‘RTH’ button on the remote controller or the ‘RTH’ function in the DJI Go 4 app.

Low Battery RTH: The return to home is triggered when the battery is depleted to a point, which may affect the safe return of the Phantom 4 Pro V2.

This pilot can cancel the RTH procedure by pressing the RTH button on the remote controller. This drone is highly intelligent and its innovative technology allows it to calculate the thresholds for low battery RTH warning, using its current altitude and distance from the home point.

Note: It is very important to understand the 3 x RTH functions fully.  When you receive your Phantom 4 Pro V2, it is a great idea to read the User Manual many times, especially the sections on the intelligent flight battery, return to home features and safety instructions.  Read these sections a few times.  Also know where the RTH buttons are on the Remote Controller and in the DJI Go 4 app.

DJI Phantom 4 Pro V2.0 Flight Modes Review

The Phantom 4 Pro V2 has 3 flight modes as follows;

P-Mode (Positioning) – This works best when the GPS signal is strong. It utilizes the GPS, the stereo vision system, the infrared sensors to locate itself, stabilize, track subjects and navigate very precisely. ActiveTrack and advanced features such as TapFly are available in this mode.

S-Mode (Sport) – In Sport mode, the Phantom 4 Pro can fly at its maximum speed of 45 mph (72 km/h). Obstacle sensing isn’t available in Sports mode.

In S-mode, the Phantom 4 Pro V2 drone and remote controller are optimized for agility and speed.  The stick movements on the Phantom 4 Pro remote controller will be far more responsive than in P-mode.

A-Mode (Attitude) – When GPS or the Vision System is unavailable, the Phantom 4 Pro V2 will only use the barometer for positioning to control the altitude.

DJI Phantom 4 Pro V2.0 Camera Specifications & Review

DJI Phantom 4 Pro V2 Camera Review, Features And Specifications

The camera on the Phantom 4 Pro has a fantastic range of manual camera settings along with an excellent automatic shooting mode, allowing you to create stunning aerial cinematography.

The camera is equipped with a 1 inch 20 megapixel sensor and has a manually adjustable aperture ranging from f/2.8 to f/11.

It also supports auto-focus by half-pressing the shutter button and has a focus range starting at 3.3 feet (1 meter).

The custom engineered lens consists of eight elements, arranged into seven groups. A mechanical shutter, eliminates rolling shutter distortion, which can occur when taking images of fast moving subjects or when flying at high speed.

In effect, the Phantom 4 Pro camera is as powerful as most traditional ground cameras. More powerful video processing supports H.264 4k videos at 60 fps or H.265 4k at 30 fps, both with a 100 Mbps bitrate.

H.265 retains 50% more information than H.264, creating more detailed and vivid images.

The Phantom 4 Pro V2 advanced sensors and processors ensure everything is captured with more image detail which is needed for advanced post production.
