Introducing The Rolex Yacht-Master 42 In RLX Titanium

A prototype surfaced years ago, and now the watch is a reality…on a bracelet..

new black yacht master

Late last year, Rolex released the Deepsea Challenge in its proprietary RLX titanium material. That watch also happened to be 50mm in diameter and basically unwearable for mere mortals. Today another watch enters the RLX fray: The Rolex Yacht-Master 42. We last saw a titanium Yacht-Master on the wrist of Ben Ainslie – the famed sailor. That was years ago, and the watch he was wearing was a prototype on a strap.

Yacht-Master

This new release is a full titanium Yacht-Master 42. That means a titanium case and titanium bracelet – just like the Deepsea Challenge. In terms of aesthetics, the overall design language is everything we have come to expect from the black-Cerachrom bezel YM's of late. That means we get the raised black numerals against a matte ceramic bezel insert. But where the case would normally be a precious metal, now we get this watch in full titanium.

The titanium bracelet is fully brushed (thank you, Rolex) and features the brand's 5mm Easylink extension system.

I had a hunch more titanium was coming, but I also figured we were years away from such a thing. I did not expect a second titanium Rolex mere months after the Deepsea Challenge, and I fully did not expect that watch to be a Yacht-Master. Now that it's here, though, I should have – considering the prototype was known to have existed.

Rolex Yacht-Master

To be honest, the draw here for me is Rolex's decision to put this on a titanium bracelet. It would have been all too easy to throw this on Oysterflex and call it a day. But the choice of a fully-brushed titanium bracelet puts the Yacht-Master firmly in the tool-watch category and makes me more excited about the model than I ever have been before.

Having worn the 42 in white gold, on Oysterflex, the sizing doesn't scare me at all, and this likely will wear even better on the bracelet. Stay tuned for our hands-on impressions – as I can't wait to feel how light this one is.

The New Rolex Yacht-Master 42 RLX Titanium 226627

After teasing the crowds, the coveted model finally emerges..

new black yacht master

First noticed in 2021 as a prototype on the wrist of Olympic champion sailor Sir Ben Ainslie being tested in real-life conditions for which it was developed and built, the titanium Yacht-Master 42 has just been made officially part of the Rolex collection. Here’s the new and highly anticipated YM 42 reference 226627.

new black yacht master

The new Yacht-Master is presented in a 42mm case manufactured from a proprietary titanium alloy named RLX Titanium, with polished, high-sheen and technical satin-finished surfaces. It features a signature bidirectional rotating bezel with a matte black Cerachrom insert with raised numerals and indices to allow sailors accurate timing of their manoeuvres.

The familiar intense black dial design is about clarity, with large hour markers and hands coated in a luminous material for easy reading in low-light conditions. The new reference is powered by Rolex’s in-house calibre 3235, certified as a Superlative Chronometer. It has passed rigorous tests for precision (-2/+2 seconds a day) and reliability. The movement has a 70-hour power reserve, and the watch is water-resistant up to 100m. The new Yacht-Master 42 has an Oyster bracelet made from RLX titanium with ceramic inserts for better flexibility, with the Oysterlock safety clasp. The bracelet features the Easylink extension link to easily adjust the bracelet length by approximately 5mm.

The Rolex Yacht-Master was first introduced in 1992 and has since become one of Rolex’s most popular and iconic models. Designed for sailing enthusiasts and those who appreciate the nautical lifestyle without setting foot on board, the Yacht-Master comes in several sizes and materials, including stainless steel, gold, and platinum. The model is available in several variations, including the Yacht-Master II; the latter features a regatta timer, a countdown timer designed explicitly for yacht racing. The new Yacht-Master RLX Titanium marks a symbolic and welcomed return of Rolex to the times when sports and professional watches were made for real-life activities without the “luxury” component.

Johnny depp hangs with will smith in italy, second time together overseas, johnny depp & will smith hangin' in italy ... int'l bromance continues.

Forget the Black Pearl -- Johnny Depp is on a yacht off the coast of Italy, and Will Smith is also on board ... marking at least the second time the dudes have linked up overseas.

The 'Pirates' star and the 'Bad Boys' actor are in Italy together for their guest appearances this week at an Andrea Bocelli concert series ... and it looks like they're logging some R&R before the gig on the same vessel.

Johnny and Will were photographed aboard a fancy yacht in photos posted Tuesday by Egyptian singer Ahmed Saad ... and they also posed for a pic with German DJ Rampa .

PEOPLE reports Johnny and Will are together en route to the Bocelli concert.

Waiting for your permission to load the Instagram Media.

JD and WS are set to join Andrea on stage Wednesday and Friday as part of a star-studded lineup in Lajatico, Italy ... Bocelli's hometown in the country's Tuscany region. The concert is being filmed and made into a movie, marking Andrea's 30 years in music.

Johnny plays in a band when he's not acting and Will had some hip hop hits back in the day ... so they definitely have a leg to stand on as far as bona fides for being in this mashup.

More importantly though ... this latest reunion seems to suggest their bromance is growing stronger -- remember, they got together last year in Saudi Arabia for a film festival there, and were hugging it up and looking chummy in the Middle East.

On its face ... it seems like a friendship is blossoming here, a globetrotting one at that.

Soul asylum and hippo campus drop new songs, album news ahead of minnesota yacht club gigs.

Two of Minnesota's top-selling rock bands from different eras, Hippo Campus and Soul Asylum each released new songs and accompanying album news this week ahead of big hometown gigs at this weekend's Minnesota Yacht Club festival.

On Wednesday, Soul Asylum debuted its dirt-shaking new tune, "High Road," alongside news that it reunited with the Rolling Stones' new drummer Steve Jordan to produce an LP due out this fall, titled "Slowly But Shirley." The album title and its cover art both pay homage to drag-racing pioneer Shirley "Cha Cha" Muldowney, who was a childhood hero of frontman Dave Pirner.

A seasoned session drummer and sideman also known to Pirner from when the old lineup of his band toured with Keith Richards' X-Pensive Winos, Jordan previously produced one of Soul Asylum's best-loved albums from its pre-"Runaway Train" days, 1990′s "And the Horse They Rode In On… ." He came to Minneapolis to work with them on the new recordings at the Terrarium studio last year.

Hippo Campus already announced it would have a new album out this year on Sylvan Esso's record label, Psychic Hotline. The release date and title of the record were unveiled Tuesday along with a new song and details of it all being co-produced by a big name in the indie-rock world.

Brad Cook — an ex-bandmate of Bon Iver's Justin Vernon who has also produced for Waxahatchee and Nathaniel Rateliff — co-helmed the new Hippo Campus album with the band's longtime collaborator, Caleb Wright. Titled "Flood," the LP is due out Sept. 20.

To help hype presales , the group released a third track off the album Tuesday, an off-kilter but ultra-catchy ditty titled "Paranoid," which will be the lead single from it. Twin Cities fans might recognize the library setting in the song's music video as the historic James J. Hill Center, a few blocks from the St. Paul Conservatory of Performing Arts, which the band members attended.

Soul Asylum and Hippo Campus are both on Saturday's schedule at the Minnesota Yacht Club festival in St. Paul. The former is set to play at 3 p.m. and the latter at 5 p.m., followed at 6 p.m. by semi-local favorites the Hold Steady — who will hopefully also have some new music to share soon.

Chris Riemenschneider has been covering the Twin Cities music scene since 2001, long enough for Prince to shout him out during "Play That Funky Music (White Boy)." The St. Paul native authored the book "First Avenue: Minnesota's Mainroom" and previously worked as a music critic at the Austin American-Statesman in Texas.

Students Target Teachers in Group TikTok Attack, Shaking Their School

Seventh and eighth graders in Malvern, Pa., impersonating their teachers posted disparaging, lewd, racist and homophobic videos in the first known mass attack of its kind in the U.S.

With her back to the camera, Patrice Motz faces a tall, solid fence. She and foliage cast shadows on the gray surface.

By Natasha Singer

Natasha Singer, who covers technology in schools, reported from Malvern, Pa. She welcomes reader tips at nytimes.com/tips .

In February, Patrice Motz, a veteran Spanish teacher at Great Valley Middle School in Malvern, Pa., was warned by another teacher that trouble was brewing.

Some eighth graders at her public school had set up fake TikTok accounts impersonating teachers. Ms. Motz, who had never used TikTok, created an account.

She found a fake profile for @patrice.motz, which had posted a real photo of her at the beach with her husband and their young children. “Do you like to touch kids?” a text in Spanish over the family vacation photo asked. “Answer: Sí.”

In the days that followed, some 20 educators — about one quarter of the school’s faculty — discovered they were victims of fake teacher accounts rife with pedophilia innuendo, racist memes, homophobia and made-up sexual hookups among teachers. Hundreds of students soon viewed, followed or commented on the fraudulent accounts.

In the aftermath, the school district briefly suspended several students, teachers said. The principal during one lunch period chastised the eighth-grade class for its behavior.

The biggest fallout has been for teachers like Ms. Motz, who said she felt “kicked in the stomach” that students would so casually savage teachers’ families. The online harassment has left some teachers worried that social media platforms are helping to stunt the growth of empathy in students. Some teachers are now hesitant to call out pupils who act up in class. Others said it had been challenging to keep teaching.

“It was so deflating,” said Ms. Motz, who has taught at the school, in a wealthy Philadelphia suburb, for 14 years. “I can’t believe I still get up and do this every day.”

The Great Valley incident is the first known group TikTok attack of its kind by middle schoolers on their teachers in the United States. It’s a significant escalation in how middle and high school students impersonate, troll and harass educators on social media. Before this year, students largely impersonated one teacher or principal at a time.

The middle schoolers’ attack also reflects broader concerns in schools about how students’ use, and abuse, of popular online tools is intruding on the classroom. Some states and districts have recently restricted or banned student cellphone use in schools, in part to limit peer harassment and cyberbullying on Instagram, Snap, TikTok and other apps.

Now social media has helped normalize anonymous aggressive posts and memes, leading some children to weaponize them against adults.

“We didn’t have to deal with teacher-targeting at this scale before,” said Becky Pringle, president of the National Education Association, the largest U.S. teachers’ union. “It’s not only demoralizing. It could push educators to question, ‘Why would I continue in this profession if students are doing this?’”

In a statement, the Great Valley School District said it had taken steps to address “22 fictitious TikTok accounts” impersonating teachers at the middle school. It described the incident as “a gross misuse of social media that profoundly impacted our staff.”

Last month, two female students at the school publicly posted an “apology” video on a TikTok account using the name of a seventh-grade teacher as a handle. The pair, who did not disclose their names, described the impostor videos as a joke and said teachers had blown the situation out of proportion.

“We never meant for it to get this far, obviously,” one of the students said in the video. “I never wanted to get suspended.”

“Move on. Learn to joke,” the other student said about a teacher. “I am 13 years old,” she added, using an expletive for emphasis, “and you’re like 40 going on 50.”

In an email to The New York Times, one of the students said that the fake teacher accounts were intended as obvious jokes, but that some students had taken the impersonations too far.

A TikTok spokeswoman said the platform’s guidelines prohibit misleading behavior, including accounts that pose as real people without disclosing that they are parodies or fan accounts. TikTok said a U.S.-based security team validated ID information — such as driver’s licenses — in impersonation cases and then deleted the data.

Great Valley Middle School, known locally as a close-knit community, serves about 1,100 students in a modern brick complex surrounded by a sea of bright green sports fields.

The impostor TikToks disrupted the school’s equilibrium, according to interviews with seven Great Valley teachers, four of whom requested anonymity for privacy reasons. Some teachers already used Instagram or Facebook but not TikTok.

The morning after Ms. Motz, the Spanish teacher, discovered her impersonator, the disparaging TikToks were already an open secret among students.

“There was this undercurrent conversation throughout the hallway,” said Shawn Whitelock, a longtime social studies teacher. “I noticed a group of students holding a cellphone up in front of a teacher and saying, ‘TikTok.’”

Students took images from the school’s website, copied family photos that teachers had posted in their classrooms and found others online. They made memes by cropping, cutting and pasting photos, then superimposing text.

The low-tech “cheapfake” images differ from recent incidents in schools where students used artificial intelligence apps to generate real-looking, digitally altered images known as “deepfakes.”

While some of the Great Valley teacher impostor posts seemed jokey and benign — like “Memorize your states, students!” — other posts were sexualized. One fake teacher account posted a collaged photo with the heads of two male teachers pasted onto a man and woman partially naked in bed.

Fake teacher accounts also followed and hit on other fake teachers.

“It very much became a distraction,” Bettina Scibilia, an eighth-grade English teacher who has worked at the school for 19 years, said of the TikToks.

Students also targeted Mr. Whitelock, who was the faculty adviser for the school’s student council for years.

A fake @shawn.whitelock account posted a photo of Mr. Whitelock standing in a church during his wedding, with his wife mostly cropped out. The caption named a member of the school’s student council, implying the teacher had wed him instead. “I’m gonna touch you,” the impostor later commented.

“ I spent 27 years building a reputation as a teacher who is dedicated to the profession of teaching,” Mr. Whitelock said in an interview. “An impersonator assassinated my character — and slandered me and my family in the process.”

Mrs. Scibilia said a student had already posted a graphic death threat against her on TikTok earlier in the school year, which she reported to the police. The teacher impersonations increased her concern.

“Many of my students spend hours and hours and hours on TikTok, and I think it’s just desensitized them to the fact that we’re real people,” she said. “They didn’t feel what a violation this was to create these accounts and impersonate us and mock our children and mock what we love.”

A few days after learning of the videos, Edward Souders, the principal of Great Valley Middle School, emailed the parents of eighth graders, describing the impostor accounts as portraying “our teachers in a disrespectful manner.”

The school also held an eighth-grade assembly on responsible technology use.

But the school district said it had limited options to respond. Courts generally protect students’ rights to off-campus free speech, including parodying or disparaging educators online — unless the students’ posts threaten others or disrupt school.

“While we wish we could do more to hold students accountable, we are legally limited in what action we can take when students communicate off campus during nonschool hours on personal devices,” Daniel Goffredo, the district’s superintendent, said in a statement.

The district said it couldn’t comment on any disciplinary actions, to protect student privacy.

In mid-March, Nikki Salvatico, president of the Great Valley Education Association, a teachers’ union, warned the school board that the TikToks were disrupting the school’s “safe educational environment.”

“We need the message that this type of behavior is unacceptable,” Ms. Salvatico said at a school board meeting on March 18.

The next day, Dr. Souders sent another email to parents. Some posts contained “offensive content,” he wrote, adding: “I am optimistic that by addressing it together, we can prevent it from happening again.”

While a few accounts disappeared — including those using the names of Ms. Motz, Mr. Whitelock and Mrs. Scibilia — others popped up. In May, a second TikTok account impersonating Mrs. Scibilia posted several new videos mocking her.

She and other Great Valley educators said they had reported the impostor accounts to TikTok, but had not heard back. But several teachers, who felt the videos had violated their privacy, said they did not provide TikTok with a personal ID to verify their identities.

On Wednesday, TikTok removed the account impersonating Mrs. Scibilia and three other fake Great Valley teacher accounts flagged by a reporter.

Mrs. Scibilia and other teachers are still processing the incident. Some teachers have stopped posing for and posting photographs, lest students misuse the images. Experts said this type of abuse could harm teachers’ mental health and reputations.

“That would be traumatizing to anyone,” said Susan D. McMahon , a psychology professor at DePaul University in Chicago and chair of the American Psychological Association’s Task Force on Violence Against Educators. She added that verbal student aggression against teachers was increasing.

Now teachers like Mrs. Scibilia and Ms. Motz are pushing schools to educate students on how to use tech responsibly — and bolster policies to better protect teachers.

In the Great Valley students’ “apology” on TikTok last month, the two girls said they planned to post new videos. This time, they said, they would make the posts private so teachers couldn’t find them.

“We’re back, and we’ll be posting again,” one said. “And we are going to private all the videos at the beginning of next school year,” she added, “’cause then they can’t do anything.”

On Friday, after a Times reporter asked the school district to notify parents about this article, the students deleted the “apology” video and removed the teacher’s handle from their account. They also added a disclaimer: “Guys, we’re not acting as our teachers anymore that’s in the past !!”

Alleged Russian spy Kira Korolev known as 'well-trained actor and Moscow theatre director' in Perth

A woman in a red shirt and sunglasses smiles in front of the sea.

Alleged Russian spy Kira Korolev used the surname Karavaytseva and promoted herself as a highly qualified theatre director and occasional actor in Western Australia in 2010.

A former Perth theatre director said Ms Korolev was hired to be the assistant director of a play put on by Deckchair Theatre at Victoria Hall in Fremantle.

Both Ms Korolev and her husband were remanded in custody on Friday, with their matters adjourned until September.

In Brisbane, alleged Russian spy Kira Korolev has been found working as an information systems technician with the Australian Army.

But over in Western Australia, the 40-year-old Ms Korolev is remembered for playing a different role — that of a well-trained actor and Moscow theatre director.

Ms Korolev and her husband Igor, 62, were arrested on Friday and appeared in court to face charges of preparing for an espionage offence.

The Australian Federal Police (AFP) alleged Ms Korolev travelled to Russia while on leave from the Australian Defence Force (ADF) and instructed her husband to log into her work account and send sensitive material that could be passed to Russian authorities.

Both were remanded in custody, with their matters adjourned until September.

The ABC has confirmed that in the 2010s, Ms Korolev was an international student using the surname Karavaytseva, and promoting herself as a highly qualified theatre director and sometime actor with credits in numerous Moscow plays.

The owner of a now-defunct Perth theatre production company said she encountered Kira when she applied for an assistant director role for a play called In the Garden, produced by Deckchair Theatre at Victoria Hall in Fremantle.

The former theatre director, who asked not to be identified, said Kira was hired for the role and helped with filming some promotional videos and photographing the cast and crew.

"I only had nice things to say about Kira,'' said the owner.

"She was a reliable team member and clearly had excellent skills in theatre. We didn't have a personal relationship beyond our involvement in the production."

Kira's application letter for the job, obtained by the ABC, reveals that at the time of seeking work at the theatre, she was an international student who had been completing her master's degree at Edith Cowan University in film and video.

In her application, she writes that she was working on her final project — a documentary on experimental film exploring Peter Brook's methodology of working with actors, based on Shakespeare's play Richard III.

"In Russia, I worked as assistant director in Moscow drama theatre,'' she stated.

In the resume, also obtained by the ABC, she reveals some of her life goals and lists extensive qualifications in the arts, including a degree from the university and completion of an acting arts course at the International Slavic Institute in Russia from 2005 to 2007.

It also states she had completed a "degree of human resource management" at the "state university – "high economics (Russia)".

Under the heading of experience, Ms Korolev listed work at Moscow Dramatic Theatre in the position of part-time assistant director, scheduling and planning rehearsals.

In addition to directing, she also described herself as an actor in theatre from 2006 to 2010, and as undertaking work as the official photographer.

From 2005 to 2010, her resume lists her as undertaking the duties of promoter or hostess at various promotional events in Moscow, where she "promoted events" and interacted with guests.

In the resume, her goals were listed as seeking interesting work opportunities.

She wrote that she specialised in directing and stated, "I'm looking for interesting and challenging work with plenty of opportunities for new experiences".

Under the heading of personal qualities, she described herself as hardworking, honest, loyal, attentive to details, reliable and "very good fit".

Her interests were tennis, in which she noted she held a "3rd sport degree".

She said she could drive a manual car and spoke Russian.

Attached to her application was a reference purportedly from an art director at the State Institution of Culture in Moscow.

The reference stated that she had been working as an unfixed stage manager for the theatre's active repertory of performances, including About Wet Snow, Ivan and the Devil, Fedra, and Misfortune of a Gentle Heart.

"During this period, Karavaytseva approved herself to be a creative collaborator taking an active part in repetition and execution of the performance,'' wrote art director Andrei Lubimov.

He went on to describe her as being an "extraordinary director of the theatre's view with a strong sense of form and style," making diverse mise-en-scene decisions.

In the January 2006 reference, Mr Lubimov wrote that Kira "deeply weighs problems ... connected to the ultimate priorities of the characters and ... the  performance".

Efforts to contact Mr Lubimov were unsuccessful.

The ABC has been unable to confirm whether Karavaytseva is Kira's maiden name.

Staying on course

The Oyster Perpetual Yacht-Master 40 in Oystersteel and platinum with an Oyster bracelet.

Bidirectional rotatable bezel, timing the distance.

The Yacht-Master’s bidirectional rotatable 60-minute graduated bezel is made entirely from precious metals or fitted with a Cerachrom insert in high-tech ceramic. The raised polished numerals and graduations stand out clearly against a matt, sand-blasted background.

This functional bezel – which allows the wearer to calculate, for example, the sailing time between two buoys – is also a key component in the model’s distinctive visual identity.

Exceptional legibility

Like all Rolex Professional watches, the Yacht-Master 40 offers exceptional legibility in all circumstances, and especially in the dark, thanks to its Chromalight display.

The broad hands and hour markers in simple shapes – triangles, circles, rectangles – are filled with a luminescent material emitting a long-lasting glow.

A legendary combination

Many Rolex watches are available with the now-legendary combination of yellow, white or Everose gold and steel known as Rolesor, but Rolesium is a creation specific to the Yacht-Master.

While the case and bracelet are in rugged Oystersteel, the bezel of the Rolesium versions is made of platinum, imparting a silvery whiteness and vibrant luminosity for an unmistakable sense of luxury.

The Oyster bracelet

Alchemy of form and function.

The Oyster bracelet is a perfect alchemy of form and function, aesthetics and technology, designed to be both robust and comfortable. It is equipped with an Oysterlock folding clasp, which prevents accidental opening and the Easylink comfort extension link, also exclusive to Rolex.

This ingenious system allows the wearer to increase the bracelet length by approximately 5 mm, providing additional comfort in any circumstance.
