Is the house in the cbs series ghosts real (and if so, where is it).

Ghosts on CBS

Updated: December 16, 2022

I’m not sure if CBS expected to have a hit on its hands with its new supernatural comedy, Ghosts , but they do. The series is a rare gem that appeals to both critics and viewers alike.

For example, on Rotten Tomatoes, it’s got an average critic Tomatometer score of 94% and a 71% average audience score. It’s rated 7.6/10 on IMDB and 79% of Google users like it.

It’s also doing well in ratings. As the Los Angeles Times reported, at least four times since it premiered, Ghosts has topped the viewership list for first-year series. It’s also ranked in the top 20 most-watched shows and in the top 10 for entertainment programs overall.

So, yeah, it’s doing pretty good.

It’s because of sometimes Haunt Jaunts contributor William Collins that I started paying attention to the series. And when I did the first thing I noticed was the house.

Then the first thing I wondered was, “Okay, where is that house? Is it real? Is it really haunted? Must. Know. More!”

But before I reveal what I dug up, let’s get acquainted with the series.

Ghosts Storyline

Here’s the description from CBS:

Samantha and Jay throw caution to the wind when they convert their recently inherited country estate into a bed-and-breakfast. Call it mislaid plans. Not only is the place falling apart, but it’s also inhabited by spirits of previous residents — whom only Samantha can see and hear. Ghosts spins the funny, heartfelt story about a newfound dream that reveals connection and self-discovery aren’t just for the living.

The Houses in Ghosts

Even though the show is set in the Hudson Valley, it’s not filmed there. According to The Cinemaholic , Ghosts is filmed in both Los Angeles, California, and Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Which helps explain why the exterior of Woodstone Mansion in the pilot doesn’t look like the one in the rest of the series.

The house in the pilot

The house in the original pilot (they’ve since changed it), is the Greystone Mansion & Gardens: The Doheny Estate, a real-life estate on South San Rafael Avenue in Pasadena, California. Specifically, 380 S. San Rafael, which is better known as Wayne Manor. As in Bruce Wayne.  It was used as the exterior for his house in the 1966 Batman series. But that’s not its only claim to fame. It may even actually be haunted, and people can tour it. We’ll get to that below.

The house in the series

As Hooked on Houses pointed out, did they expect fans wouldn’t spot the change in house exteriors? They explained that the one that was swapped out for the Woodstone Estate in the CBS series was created in Montreal.

I’m not sure if the interior of the house is a combo of real house with soundstages, but according to Hooked on Houses, interior scenes are predominantly filmed on soundstages.

Can you tour, or stay in, the house in Ghosts?

Visiting the house in the cbs pilot.

The real-life Greystone Mansion that serves as the exterior for Woodstone Mansion in the original CBS Ghosts pilot is a popular stop for set-jetters because it has appeared in other supernatural comedies. It was also Cosmo Topper’s Mansion in the movie Topper  and was in Scary Movie 2.

It was also in the neo-noir romantic thriller Dead Again, was the Writer’s Mansion in Stand By Me , and was the Well-Manicured Man’s home in The X-Files movie.

Just to name a few of the things you may have seen it in prior to its appearance in Ghosts on CBS.

As far as it being either haunted or open to the public, yes and sort of yes.

In September 1928, Ned Doheny and his wife moved into the mansion. Months later, in February 1929, Ned was found shot to death in is home, a victim of an apparent murder-suicide perpetrated by his friend Hugh Plunkett. Some say either one or both of their ghosts now haunt the home.

Once in a while, tours of the inside of the home are given. In fact, in 2023, the estate is bringing back its popular “Inside the Mansion” program that allows visitors to see the first floor. 2023 dates so far include Saturday, January 7; Sunday, February 5; Saturday, March 4; and Sunday, March 5. Reservations are recommended, and since capacity is limited, it’s also recommended you book as early as possible.

However, the public is welcome to visit the grounds from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., seven days a week. For more info, visit https://www.beverlyhills.org/departments/communityservices/cityparks/greystonemansiongardens/visitgreystone .

Visiting the house in the CBS series

Since it appears this house’s location is either a very well-kept secret or created specifically for the series, there is no tour available —or chance to book an overnight stay. I know, I know. It would probably be booked solid if it was a real B&B that resembled anything at all like Woodstone Mansion.

The house in the BBC series

Unlike the house in the CBS version of Ghosts , Button Hall in the BBC version does exist. BBC Ghosts is filmed at West Horsley Place in Surrey, England.

The medieval manor house dates from the 1400s, so it’s loaded with history —and even a ghost story or two. After all, it’s seen its fair share of deaths over the centuries —and even a morbid mystery concerning a severed head in a red leather bag. Apparently the house was once owned by Sir Walter Raleigh’s son, Carew, whose father was beheaded for treason. But Carew’s mother wanted the head, and for whatever reason, they gave it to her.

When she moved into West Horsley Place with her son, the head came with her. Or did it? Allegedly it’s still in the house somewhere, perhaps in a forgotten cupboard or something, still in the red leather bag. Which sounds like the making of a Ghosts storyline, doesn’t it? Someone finds the bag, expecting perhaps to find an antique bowling ball, but instead makes the gruesome discovery that it’s an embalmed head.

Anyway, visitors are welcome to tour the house and grounds from April to October. Admission costs £10. The Nookies & Crannies tour costs £20. For more info, visit https://www.westhorsleyplace.org .

Ghosts and What We Do In The Shadows are my two favorite shows right now.

' src=

It is SO tempting to watch Ghosts, but I haven’t because I try not to spend too much time in front of the tube.

' src=

I have been trying to identify the house using images of the house in the series and aerial images of the property, but so far, no go. Unless one of the cast members identifies a nearby landmark, I’m searching for a needle in a haystack. Production erased the images of Wayne Manor from the pilot except for the imagery where Thorfinn tries picking up trash. I do know its loosely based on Pennsylvania’s haunted Baker house; the characters of Elias and Hetty were named after its owners.

' src=

What We Do In The Shadows is another one I hear a lot about. You reminded me I really need to hurry up and FINALLY check it out!

You are SO wise (and a lot more productive) not giving in to the temptation…

The what it might be based on comment is what’s going to inspire another Ghosts post so thank you. It came up when this comment reminded me I had hit “post” too soon. I wanted to mention and link to something else I’d found about the house, which was just that it appears it might not be a real house and that’s why you can’t find it. Like the interior, it might be a set that was created. At least partially. I’m just SO glad you saw this because I was going to tell you on Twitter…hey! Look! You are the reason I wrote about this! lol

' src=

41.812498, -73.964513 Have a look at the place at these coordinates on google maps. People say this is not the building, but I beg to differ. If it’s not this exact building it is an exact replicate. PS it is next to an old cemetery too.

Nope not it – I’ve seen a real overhead of the estate and its supposed to be somewhere near Montreal –

Hi, Michael. Thanks for stopping by to share the coordinates. I can see why you’d beg to differ that’s not the house since it looks so similar to the house on the show. lol But I know William is right that wherever the house is, if it’s real at all and not just a set, it’s in Canada somewhere. BUT I’d love to know if this is a private residence or what it is…and I also love that you noticed it’s near an old cemetery! THANKS for taking the time to leave this comment!

Hi Courtney upon careful review of the images side by side I now realize it is NOT the same exterior though it’s about as similar as you could get. The building at those coordinates has a long history it was originally an unfinished barn or “carriage house” for the Col. Oliver Hazard Payne Estate. The property was subdivided after Paynes death by the subsequent owners The barn was completed after his death and it was, much later, turned into a restaurant with gift shops during the 70’s & 80’s. To my knowledge the property now sits vacant. Interestingly the property belonged to a school for juvenile delinquents and I have heard rumors that there are many unmarked childrens graves in the woods around this property. I do really wish that people who CLAIM to have seen the actual exterior location would just post the address so we can all see it too for ourselves. Canada and Montreal are big places so unless an address is posted showing definitively it’s somewhere in Canada is just parroting what the media have already said. Thanks for posting and I do hope someone figures it out. Would be nice to know more about the real houses history if it even has one or is just a set built for the show as has been suggested.

My understanding is the house is owned by a Belgian family and is an hour’s drive from Montreal. The gazebo and lake seen in the series are not part of the property. I have a photo of the estate, but it has no clues on the location.

Ooo! Your comments are the gifts that keep on giving, Michael! I never know if people will see my replies and I LOVE that you did and answered back so fast with so much great history about the location in the coordinates you shared. WOW!!!! THANK YOU!!!!

And I’m still hopeful/searching for where the house is. You’d think someone would spill eventually if it was real. I know the one in the UK version is real and offers tours. Which…hey. You just gave me a great idea for another sort of follow up post. lol Thanks again so much!

I know where it is but revealing it publicly would be really irresponsible. Like I said, it’s an hour’s drive from Montreal.

' src=

I don’t think you know where it is at all. Your posts look like copy and paste verbatim from articles that I’ve already read that don’t disclose the location. “owned by a Belgian family” and “an hour’s drive from Montreal” is exactly what the articles say.

I don’t need to “copy and paste,” I just probably saw the same article you read. If I knew how to paste an image to this message board, I could share an image from Google Maps. It’s also a mile and a half north of the Ontario/Quebec border. It has two driveways and other structures on the property. The driveway we see in the series looks like the main drive but it also winds down past the house and down the view seen in “Pete’s Wife” toward another road. The two roads intersect at the southeast corner of the estate, not far from a local highway. Remember the fly over from the “Possession” episode? It moved southward over the house. There’s a swimming pool, a fountain and what might be a guest house or stable in a line along the back wing of the house, hidden from the exterior shots in the series. The interior photos of the house look NOTHING like the sets. They look more like a museum landmark than a mansion.

Hey William! I appreciate that you feel it might be irresponsible to post the coordinates where you think the house might be. (I also sometimes lament that my comments are set up to allow for sharing photos, but then again…it also protects me from having to see inappropriate ones too. lol NOT that you would share any, but damn spammers and such would.)

I don’t know what the ethics are about sharing house locations. Once people figure them out, they definitely share them. (Think Conjuring house or Amityville.) It may be a little invasive but not against the law. It’s a lot more fun when houses from movies don’t make it a secret and wear it as a badge of honor though. Leads to less chances for conflict.

Anyway, I think I read somewhere that the interior scenes are on a soundstage. But now I don’t know where I saw that.

And if I ever get a chance to talk with anyone from the show, cast or crew, you better believe I’ll be asking them where the house is! lol

I shared the aerial image of the house on my Twitter account. There are NO labels in it to identify where it is, but anyone who has seen the show would agree THAT IS IT>

That really does look like it! Sharing the link to your Tweet for anyone who’s interested in seeing it: https://twitter.com/Thor_2000/status/1573005477063032834?s=20&t=ghaxVqq5JCPS4j32KGxtHw

You May Recognize the Haunted Estate in 'Ghosts' from 'Bridesmaids'

Where is 'Ghosts' filmed? The CBS comedy, which stars Rose McIver and Utkarsh Ambudkar, takes place in a potentially-haunted country house.

If you enjoy when a comedy features a dash of dark humor and some light paranormal activity, then you may want to check out Ghosts . The sitcom, which is based on a 2019 BBC One series of the same name, is set to debut on CBS on Oct. 7.

The show follows a couple after they inherit a picturesque country estate from a relative. While the two are initially excited to put their DIY attitudes to work to open up a bed and breakfast, they soon learn that they aren't alone in the home.

The ghosts of former residents are there as well, which adds a whole new meaning to Spooky Season . Much of the action does take place inside the haunted home, but is Ghosts filmed on a set, or in a sinister real-life location?

Where is 'Ghosts' filmed? You may recognize the exterior of the estate.

Scenes for the BBC One edition of Ghosts were filmed at an English country manor called West Horsley Place, and the American version also utilized a grand estate.

A sprawling property at 380 South San Rafael Avenue in Pasadena, Calif. served as the backdrop for the exterior of the home in the pilot. The facade of the house also served as the site of Bruce Wayne's residence (Wayne Manor) in the 1966 Batman television series.

The home was featured in Bridesmaids as the location of Lillian's (Maya Rudolph) bridal shower, and it has also been in Alias, The Campaign, and Scary Movie 2.

Though Pasadena property is meant to be the setting for Ghosts , the scenes featuring the interior of the home were shot somewhere else entirely.

Asher Grodman, who plays a spirit named Trevor in the series, told CBS Denver that the cast and crew relocated from California to Montreal for the rest of filming.

"This is a team sport," the actor said. "They rebuilt this house in Montreal and the attention to detail is incredible. The cast is so special and it really comes down to the people and the work that goes into it...."

The 'Ghosts' cast features an actress who has already dealt with the dead on another TV show.

The cast of the new CBS series is star-studded, and there are plenty of living and non-living characters to keep viewers entertained. Rose McIver and Utkarsh Ambudkar are the main leads of the show, and they play Samantha and Jay, respectively. Their (living) characters are the ones who inherit the ghostly home.

Rose is best known for playing the unfortunately-named corpse and coroner's assistant, Liv Moore, on iZombie . She has also appeared as Amber Moore on the popular Netflix Christmas film series, A Christmas Prince .

Utkarsh had notable roles as Donald in Pitch Perfect and as Jern Dah in Brittany Runs a Marathon . He also played the brother of Mindy Kaling's character in T he Mindy Project. In addition to his screen work, Utkarsh is a rapper as well.

Rose, Asher, and Utkarsh are joined in the cast by Brandon Scott Jones (Isaac), Román Zaragoza (Sasappis), Devan Chandler Long (Thorfinn), Danielle Pinnock (Alberta), Rebecca Wisocky (Hetty), Sheila Carrasco (Flower), and Richie Moriarty (Pete).

Ghosts airs on Thursdays at 9 p.m. ET on CBS, and viewers can catch up on the show the next day on Paramount Plus.

A Fun Place to Get Your House Fix

The Haunted House in the Sitcom “Ghosts”

Ghosts sitcom CBS haunted house filming location

The CBS sitcom “Ghosts” is based on a popular BBC series. I was a fan of the British version (which is streaming on HBO Max if you want to check it out) and wasn’t sure if the new one would do it justice. But I was pleasantly surprised to tune in and find it as much fun as the original!

They have some notable differences, but the premise of the CBS show is the same: after a young couple inherits a grand old mansion from a long-lost relative, they decide to fix it up and turn it into a Bed and Breakfast. But after the wife takes a fall and has a near-death experience, she can suddenly see dead people. And there are a lot of them living in the house.

At first the ghosts disapprove of the new homeowners and want to scare them off, but when they realize Samantha is able to communicate with them, they decide it may be worthwhile to let them stay after all.

The house plays such a central role in the show that I was curious about where it was filmed. Read on to find out what I learned about it, as well as the mansion they used in the original BBC series!

Rose McIver (who you may recognize from iZombie ) plays Samantha, who is horrified to realize that Woodstone Estate is filled with ghosts.

Utkarsh Ambudkar (from Never Have I Ever ) plays her husband Jay, who is baffled to find her talking to empty rooms.

The ghosts include a cast of characters who have died on the estate over hundreds of years and aren’t thrilled by the idea of interlopers moving in and turning the place into a B&B.

The ghosts in the parlor

In the original trailer, the attorney showed Samantha and Jay a photo of the country house, and it looked like this (below):

Ghosts house in trailer Pasadena location

They filmed the pilot at a famous mansion in Pasadena, California.

After that, distractify reports that production moved to montreal., the exterior of the house we see onscreen was built (interior sets were created on a soundstage)., when you stream the episode now, this one is shown (below):.

They probably didn’t expect some of us (ahem) to pay such close attention.

They clearly haven’t met us! 😉

Woodstone Estate looked pretty good in the photo. But when Samantha and Jay pull up to it, they’re greeted by a house with a sagging roof, covered in overgrown vines (below):

aerial view of house on Ghosts sitcom

They seem to be using some CGI/special effects to cover the exterior in ivy and make it look older.

exterior of haunted house on Ghosts

The house where they filmed the first episode in Pasadena has been used in other movies like “Bridesmaids:”

You may also recognize it as Wayne Manor from the “Batman” series in the 1960s.

Here’s a screenshot i took of it in the episode “he meets his match, the grisly ghoul:”.

Wayne Manor in Batman TV series 1966

Although they removed the front exterior shots from the pilot episode, a scene filmed in back remains (screenshot below):

back exterior of 380 S San Rafael Pasadena

Here’s how the same patio looked in “Bridesmaids” (below):

back patio of house in bridesmaids movie

The mansion is located at 380 S. San Rafael Avenue in Pasadena, California.

According to Zillow the Tudor-Gothic Revival-style mansion was built in 1928 and designed by architect Paul Revere Williams .

It has over 16,000 square feet with 10 bedrooms and 6 baths.

You can see the full list of movies and TV shows filmed at this house on Movie Maps, including “Alias,” “The X Files,” “The Campaign,” and “Murder, She Wrote.”

They didn’t even really try to replicate the look of the real house for the series. It’s no longer brick and the turrets are gone (below):

aerial view of ghosts mansion front

Here’s another example of how the houses were swapped out after the original trailer and promotional materials were sent out. (Note: it may have even originally aired this way, but since I streamed the show on Hulu I’m not sure.)

When Jay and Samantha arrived at the house for the first time, the camera pans up and we see the second story of the house where they filmed in Pasadena, with vines added digitally to make it look like it’s been neglected (below):

If you stream that episode now, the camera shows the stone house they created in Montreal instead (TV magic!):

In the original “Ghosts” series , they filmed on location in Surrey at West Horsley Place , using not only the exterior of the 15th-century house but the interior rooms, as well.

The interiors of the house were also used as a filming location for the 2020 Netflix movie “Enola Holmes.”

There are three seasons of the original series that you can watch on HBO Max. Although the premise is the same, there are different types of ghosts and situations that arise.

For instance, Alison (who is called Samantha in the U.S. version), doesn’t trip and fall down the stairs in the pilot — she’s apparently pushed by one of the ghosts out a window. The result is the same, however: after her near-death experience, she is able to see dead people.

cast of ghosts in BBC sitcom

The ghosts in the cellar’s “plague pit” are played by the same actors as the ghosts upstairs.

They’re in different costumes, hair and makeup, so i didn’t catch it at first, it’s fun to see them playing such different characters in the bbc sitcom:.

In true British form, the seasons are very short, with only 6 episodes in each.

By contrast, the first season of the cbs sitcom will have 20 episodes..

According to an article in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette :

“Ghosts” features a Victorian-style mansion whose interiors and exteriors are an amalgamation of a real home in Los Angeles and sound stages in Montreal.

The house was inspired by  the Baker Mansion , a 19th-century structure built on a hill in Altoona.

Also of note: The mansion was originally owned by Elias and Hetty Baker, names that Joe Port (who adapted it for American television) lifted for the spectral character of Hetty, played by York native Rebecca Wisocky, and her oft-mentioned husband Elias.

In the BBC version, there’s the spirit of a caveman living on the property.

Utkarsh Ambudkar is hilarious as the slightly hapless husband Jay, who’s at a disadvantage because he can’t see the ghosts his wife is talking to.

I believe some scenes for the pilot episode may have been filmed on location inside the Pasadena house, like the one shown above.

In later episodes jay and samantha’s bedroom looks like this (below):.

You can often tell a difference in real-house hardwood floors and the fake wood they use for sets.

The bathroom looks pretty authentic with its peeling vintage wallpaper and a freestanding tub, but it’s also a set:.

In a flashback to 1983 we see the house looking a bit different in the distance, which is puzzling:

Update: I’m told this is the other side of the house that we don’t typically see.

“That’s the true front of the house, with what we usually see on the show being the back side. All the exterior shots are an actual house, all interior is a set. For the shot above they used a little camera magic to hide a road.” (Thanks, Anon!)

A few episodes later we get this aerial view showing the front of the house:

aerial view front of ghosts house

Asher Grodman, who plays the ghost named Trevor, told CBS Denver :

“The first time I read this script, I said this is one of the funniest things I’ve ever read. I knew it was different and I knew it was special. We were supposed to shoot the pilot in March 2020 on a Monday and the world shut down on the Friday before. In terms of the ensemble, we were all living in limbo for a year and a half and all of us just got really close.”

He adds, “They rebuilt this house in Montreal and the attention to detail is incredible.”

I took these screenshots while watching the episodes online.

Have you been watching “Ghosts”? You can catch new episodes airing on CBS on Thursday nights (or stream it on Hulu with a subscription). You can also watch three seasons of the original BBC sitcom on HBO Max.

P.S. It was 14 years ago this month that I started blogging about houses. house on ghost tv show

Architecture and Inspiration

The show features a Victorian-style mansion. The house was inspired by the ‘ Baker Mansion ‘, a 19th-century structure built on a hill in Altoona were Joe Port grow up. The ‘ Baker Mansion ‘ was originally owned by Hetty and Elias Baker , that’s why they named the characters Hetty and Elias for the series, though they did not base the characters on them.

In the series

Hetty ‘s parent had a more modest house on the property and then, she and her robber baron husband built the mansion that exists today.

Production Details: The Rooms

It must be said, the ‘ Ghosts ‘ team has many talents! The decoration team is making an incredible work on the set, on every details. On this special team we have:  Zoe Sakellaropoulo (The Production Designer), Joelle Pobjoy and Jacques Rajotte (Set Decorators). Let’s take a look on the small details of ‘ Ghosts ‘ rooms.

house on ghost tv show

  • If you have the eye, you may have noticed that Jay and Sam ‘s house is not the same between the pilot and the following episodes (first house from the pilot was edited after to show the “new” house) . Indeed, the pilot of ‘ Ghosts ‘ was filmed in Los Angeles (near the University of Southern California campus) in December 2020, then the shooting was relocated to Montreal when the series was ordered in May 2021.  Even if they didn’t replicate the look of the Los Angeles house, the Canadian set was built to exactly match the California location. The film crew did an incredible job (you can see the differences in picture below.)
  • If the house used for the pilot means something to you, it’s normal: It has been used in many productions such as ‘ Batman ‘ (1966), ‘ Bridesmaids ‘ (2011), ‘ Scary Movie 2 ‘ (2001) and more.
  • The exterior of the house, which we can see several times and where some of the characters move about, is a real house and these scenes are filmed on location at the actual house.
  • The interior of the house is all a soundstage, there are a few scenes that are shot inside the actual house that face the driveway but otherwise all sound stage.
  • The house used in the series is located at about an hour from Montreal. The house was built in the 40s by a Belgian family.
  • The gazebo used in the series (“ Halloween “) is not on the actual property, but most of the areas used for the walks are.
  • The lake we can see in the series is not a part of the actual house (“ Viking Funeral “).
  • The porch we can see in ‘ Alberta’s Fan ‘ (where Isaac and Alberta are talking) is a part of the house.
  • During a tour of the set ( video source ), the actors revealed that certain outdoor backgrounds visible through the Mansion’s windows (as perceived by the audience) are actually just giant matte paintings so the actors can remain on the indoor set. They also gave a look at some food props that were a combination of real and fake, Rose McIver bit into a real apple from the kitchen set. 'Ghosts' on CBS: What to Know About Every Woodstone Mansion's Spirit's Backstory

By Stephen Andrew - July 26, 2022 10:58 am EDT

Ghosts on CBS has only grown in popularity , with TV viewers everywhere excited for new episodes each week. A big part of the show's draw is how there is a variety of personalities in the cast. Specifically, among the ghostly characters of Woodstone Mansion, each of whom has a deeply interesting backstory.

Trading the undead for the mostly-still-dead, Ghosts stars Rose McIver as Samantha, a woman who inherits a large New York estate and decides, along with her husband Jay — played by Utkarsh Ambudkar ( The Mindy Project ) — to turn the manner into a bed and breakfast. However, unbeknownst to our clueless couple, the house is haunted by a group of ghosts who are much more friendly than frightening. Together, the whole gang winds up in some hilarious situations that also reveal these apparitions are more heart than haunt.

Mark your calendars for the official opening of Woodstone B&B— season two of #GhostsCBS premieres September 29 on @CBS and @ParamountPlus ! pic.twitter.com/Q0Y8FhT8hE — Ghosts (@GhostsCBS) June 23, 2022

Ghosts is based on a BCC series of the same name and is executive produced by Trent O'Donnell. In addition to McIver and Ambudkar, the series also stars Asher Grodman , Danielle Pinnock, Brandon Scott Jones, Sheila Carrasco, Román Zaragoza, Rebecca Wisocky, Devan Chandler Long, and Richie Moriarty. Scroll down to read more about the quirky spirits!

Thorfinn, Played by Devan Chandler Long

Thorfinn is the oldest of the ghosts. He is a Viking who was left behind by his crew about 1000 years ago. He was killed by a lightning strike on the Woodstone property long before the mansion was built. Interestingly, the bolt from the sky that took his life left his spirit with the ability to manipulate electricity.

Sasappis, Played by Román Zaragoza

Sasappis was the next ghost to inhabit the Woodstone property and is about 500 years younger than Thorfinn. He is Lenape, indigenous people of the Northeastern Woodlands, who live in the United States and Canada. We know that Sasappis died in the 1500s, but he has yet to reveal exactly how his death came about.

Captain Isaac Higgintoot, Played by Brandon Scott Jones

Isaac is an American Revolutionary officer who died of dysentery. His death came two weeks after the siege of Fort Ticonderoga. Isaac was a closeted gay man in both life and death but has recently started feeling more comfortable and confident in expressing his authentic self.

Hetty Woodstone, Played by Rebecca Wisock

Hetty is the lady of the manor, and the original owner of the Woodstone country estate. She has a familial connection to Sam, as she is Sam's fourth-great-grandmother. In life, Hetty was married to Elias (played by Matt Walsh), a robber baron. Like Sasappis, Hetty's death currently remains a mystery.

Alberta Haynes, Played by Danielle Pinnock

Alberta is a no-nonsense Prohibition-era jazz singer who is a pure diva. She died after drinking poisoned moonshine. While not all the Woodstone ghosts have a special power, Alberta does... Her humming can be heard by the living, and she can even be heard by Alexa devices.

Flower, Played by Sheila Carrasco

Flower is a hippie who often has her head in the clouds, but always has a lot of love in her heart. Her real name is Susan Montero, and she died while attempting to befriend a wild bear when on 'shrooms. Flower has the ability to put a living person in a trance if she passes through them, which mimics the effects of marijuana.

Pete Martino, Played by Richie Moriarty

Pete was a Pinecone Trooper leader who died in 1985. His cause of death was an arrow through the neck, fired by one of his scouts. The arrow remains in Pete's neck in his ghostly state. In Ghosts Season 1, Episode 6, we learn that after his death, Pete's wife married his best friend, whom she'd been secretly romantically involved with while Pete was alive. It is also revealed that Pete's daughter named her son after him.

Trevor Lefkowitz, Played by Asher Grodman

Last, but certainly not least, we come to Trevor, the most recent main cast ghost to die at Woodstone manor. Trevor was an affluent Wall Street trader who died in 2000. After partying too hard with some of his broker buddies, Trevor suffered a drug-induced heart attack. Unfortunately, Trevor died while not wearing pants, so now he's forever cursed to be the group's Winnie the Pooh. Unlike the other ghosts, Trevor has the ability to interact with the physical world, in small ways, but only if he concentrates very hard.

Crash, Played by Hudson Thames

Crash is a James Dean-esque greaser who died at Woodstone Mansion in the 1950s. His cause of death? A quite unceremonious decapitation. Crash's body only made a total of three appearances in Ghosts Season 1, and his head is still missing. Notably, Crash's story may still unfold, as showrunners Joe Wiseman and Jow Port previously teased to PopCulture.com . "We're talking about that now. We're talking about a story to explain where he has been," Port said, smiling.

Ghosts returns on Sept. 29 at 8:30 p.m. ET on CBS and will be available to stream live and on-demand on Paramount+ . Those interested in seeing all Paramount+ has to offer can click here for a free streaming offer .

15 Best Paranormal TV Shows to Watch That Will Creep You Out

Let's go ahead and leave the lights on, ok.

Unlike straight-up horror, paranormal stories do something to a person's psyche that lingers long after the screen fades to black. The feeling is like no other, and before one knows it, there's something lurking behind the shower curtain or under the bed. So why do audiences keep coming back for more of the best ghost TV shows? It's hard to pinpoint, but what is certain is a new means of telling ghost stories seems to pop up every day, and they never lose audiences. On the contrary, with such a rich variety to chill the blood, if anything, paranormal shows are more popular than ever.

Luckily for fans of the genre who don't know what to watch next, there is plenty to choose from — these are some of the best paranormal shows that are guaranteed to make the audience's blood run cold . Whether you're in the mood for fictional scepters, true stories, or full-on night-vision encounters, there is no shortage of spine-tingling series to trick your mind into thinking that sound wasn't just the neighbors. Just make sure to lock the doors and windows, first.

15 '28 Days Haunted' (2022)

Netflix's docuseries and one of the more recent ghost shows, 28 Days Haunted centers on four teams of brave paranormal investigators, who travel through some of America's most haunted locations in order to execute a paranormal experiment based on the theories of Ed and Lorraine Warren .

While the 2022 show doesn't count on flawless execution (and features mixed reviews), it still manages to send chills down many spines . Though some members of the audience don't believe that what happens through the episodes is real, it still helps keep boredom at bay.

14 'Ghost Wars' (2017 - 2018)

Created by simon barry.

Two seasons in, this Netflix series starring scene-stealers Kim Coates and Vincent D'Onofrio has its pros and cons in terms of providing creepy material. On one hand, the entire show is fiction; on the other, it's full of ghosts, so if audiences are looking to scratch that paranormal content itch, they're in the right place. The series is about a small Alaskan town in which all residents are trapped, experiencing non-stop obstacles from evil spirits who wish to do harm – and lots of it.

The dialogue is a little awkward at times, and the pacing can feel stunted, but the ghosts! So many ghosts. For fans of action (as the title clearly states), there will be guns and blood and car crashes, but the show can also be alarmingly frightening at times, so if you're looking for a good jump scare , you're in the right place .

13 'Surviving Death' (2021)

Directed by ricki stern.

Another Netflix original series, Surviving Death , is different from the others on the list, as it focuses on a variety of topics: mediums, signs from the dead, reincarnation, ghosts, and even interviews with individuals who died yet lived to tell the tale. In short, no two episodes are alike.

Part talking-head documentary, part educational programming (100% creepy as hell), this series, aside from being fascinating, works well in giving goosebumps because of how sincere each person is in recollecting their encounter. Also featuring medical doctors and other learned professionals, the paranormal show provides an iron-clad ethos that is both difficult to argue with and extraordinarily unsettling . Sleep tight.

12 'The Secret of Crickley Hall' (2012)

Directed by joe ahearne.

The BBC three-part series , also streaming on Amazon, is based on the novel by James Herbert and begins with the screams of a young boy. It's a tragic tale: a young child goes missing from a playground, and the couple tries to cope with the immeasurable loss. In their grief, they choose to move with their other young children to a sprawling estate in the middle of nowhere. Soon, they realize they've moved into a former orphanage, where unspeakable horrors occurred.

Featuring some familiar faces, such as a young Maisie Williams and Lucifer 's Tom Ellis , the frightening series offers a quick pace and an even quicker heartbeat. Featuring flashbacks of the orphanage's last days, coupled with suspenseful and frightening happenings within the home, the series is as creepy as it is tense and tragic .

11 'Paranormal Investigators: Phasmophobia' (2020)

Directed by atila kaldy.

From Australia, this reality series features psychic Andrea Kaldy , who investigates well-known haunted areas to determine if they are, in fact, haunted – be it by ghosts, poltergeists, or even demonic entities.

After investigating, Kaldy invites 3 participants to enter the location alone and complete a challenge before they are able to leave – unless they run scared, first. Perfect for fans of ghost shows, the creepy content doesn't begin straight away but rest assured, it will. The show is squeal-worthy , mainly because watching people get scared can also be terrifying. The question is, are the participants (and audiences) jumping to conclusions?

10 'Ghost Hunters' (2004 - )

Directed by mark marinaccio.

A classic in the genre of ghost hunting shows with many still tuning in to watch it, Ghost Hunters features Jason Hawes and Grant Wilson , the founding members of The Atlantic Paranormal Society or TAPS, as they search for paranormal activity around the United States. Popular for over a decade, the series has had a dedicated following for being one of the first shows of its kind.

There are some 14 seasons in all, and what makes them so successful is undoubtedly the men's use of compelling evidence by way of video footage in the show , electromagnetic field (EMF) readers, sound recordings, and eyewitness accounts – many of which terrified audiences get to see themselves (if they haven't covered their eyes in fear, that is).

9 'The Enfield Haunting' (2015)

Directed by kristoffer nyholm.

This three-part limited series wastes no time in creeping out its audience. Set in 1977 and based on a true story, the show surrounds a mother and her three children who are terrorized by an angry poltergeist. When paranormal investigators arrive, played by Timothy Spall and Matthew Macfadyen , things go from bad to worse.

Nominated for 2 BAFTAs, The Enfield Haunting is chock-full of suspense and screams. One could argue that the muted brown and orange tones or the involvement of children is the cause of its fear factor, but it's more likely the sheer evil of the unwelcoming house guest that causes the lasting chills . It's telling that the true events also inspired The Conjuring 2 .

8 'Paranormal' (2020)

Directed by amr salama and majid al ansari.

Based on the novels by Dr. Ahmed Khaled Tawfik , Netflix's first Egyptian Arabic original series provides a different tone to the mix: its protagonist, Dr. Ismail ( Ahmed Amin ), is a mild-mannered and close-lipped man, determined to neglect his past paranormal experiences and instead focus on verifiable causes and effects. An unlikely skeptic, he is unwillingly brought back into the world of his past just as a former love comes back to Cairo.

Set in both 1940 and 1969, the backdrop of the Arab-Israeli war and the upheaval it causes serves to mirror Ismail's own uncertainty, especially when his nephew begins to experience eerily similar haunting experiences. Beautifully shot and sickening at the same time , this series goes to show why Tawfik sold millions and millions of hair-raising copies.

7 'The Holzer Files' (2019 - )

Produced by rob saffi.

When it comes to paranormal TV shows, The Holzer Files is definitely worth mentioning. The horror mystery series follows a team of investigators who unearth the terrifying true hauntings from the case files of America's first parapsychologist best known for his plethora of hundreds of cases dealing with the occult, Dr. Hans Holzer .

The Holzer Files is assuredly an interesting take on Holzer's files, providing audiences with an intriguingly spooky time in the meantime. Additionally, it is also very refreshing and different from other shows of the genre.

6 'A Haunting' (2005 - )

Developed by allison erkelens.

A Haunting is 11 seasons long so far, and understandably so. Its interesting premise revolves around experiences and encounters with the paranormal, which are told by the victims and illustrated to audiences through frightening re-enactments.

The anthology supernatural surely succeeds in showcasing a chilling and haunting depiction of bizarre stories and is guaranteed to terrify audiences. Furthermore, A Haunting is widely considered one of the greatest series of the kind and assuredly makes for a very atmospheric, entertaining, and worthwhile watch.

5 'Paranormal Nightmare' (2019)

Hosted by the fourmen brothers.

This documentary/reality series stars three humble hosts ( the Fourmen brothers ) on a mission. Having suffered paranormal trauma as children, the brothers travel through the United States with the hope of helping similar victims. The credible and harrowing accounts from those interviewed by the hosts are enough to give audiences the chills, but it's when the sun goes down that things get real.

Using their night-vision cameras and EMF readers, the men capture unexplained images and sounds so spooky that it's difficult to look away or even blink. No doubt, Paranormal Nightmare is one of the creepiest paranormal series on the platform .

4 'Paranormal Witness' (2011 - 2016)

Directed by neil rawles.

In this appalling true horror mystery documentary named Paranormal Witness , which is an incredible addition to the genre, viewers are introduced to several stories of people who have lived through supernatural experiences that left big, unanswerable question marks behind.

Paranormal Witness is one of the best in its category. It is equal parts interesting and horrifying, featuring credible eyewitness accounts of paranormal activity and thus coming across as a very believable TV show. No doubt, these frightening series provide audiences with a thrilling time in front of the screen and will likely keep them up at night.

Paranormal Witness

3 'the x-files' (1993 - 2018), created by chris carter.

The X-Files is one of the most well-regarded and highest-rated paranormal/supernatural series out there and for very good reason. With an enthralling plot and incredible acting performances, this innovative show revolves around two FBI Special Agents ( David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson ) as they investigate a series of bizarre phenomena.

Through time, The X-Files remained a classic, capturing the attention of many people all over the globe. In addition to a well-written storyline, it also features a good dose of scary moments involving monsters, disturbing scenarios, and incredibly violent acts .

The X-Files

Two F.B.I. Agents, Fox Mulder the believer and Dana Scully the skeptic, investigate the strange and unexplained, while hidden forces work to impede their efforts.

2 'The Haunting of Hill House' (2018)

Created by mike flanagan.

Based on the novel of the same name by acclaimed horror writer Shirley Jackson , and directed by Mike Flanagan, The Haunting of Hill House has proven to be one of Netflix's most popular series . In it, audiences meet the Crain siblings as they gather for the funeral of one of their own. Together for the first time in years, it does not take long before the ghosts of their past come back to haunt them – literally.

Though there are sometimes dramatic stretches between big scares, the story delivers its full-fledged creepiness in its mixture of flashbacks and real-time storylines that both serve to scare and tug at one's heartstrings. Undeniably, however, it has made worldwide audiences unable to close their eyes when they go to bed for fear of the Bent-Neck Lady.

The Haunting of Hill House

1 'haunted' (2018 -), directed by jan pavlacky.

This Netflix show has everything: true ghost stories, creepy imagery, and jump-worthy reenactments. In it, people deeply affected by paranormal trauma participate in a round-table discussion of sorts with their friends and/or family members in between dramatic renditions of their terrifying tales.

At times, families have yet to disclose details to one another, which leads to emotional TV, while friends of the victims are often visibly shaken. What stands out is the production value (especially in Season 3), as it is very high, so the reenactments are often as sinister as they are cinematic .

Sumith Prasad of Where is CBS’ Ghosts Filmed?

CBS’ ‘Ghosts’ is a supernatural comedy that follows the conundrum of Samantha (Rose McIver) and Jay (Utkarsh Ambudkar), a couple who inherits a magnificent country estate filled with phantoms of distinct eras. Based on the eponymous British sitcom, the haunted house comedy is created by Mathew Baynton, Simon Farnaby, Martha Howe-Douglas, Jim Howick, Laurence Rickard, and Ben Willbond. ‘Ghosts’ finds its charm when Samantha starts to communicate with the set of ghosts, who are determined to stand in the way of the couple’s decision to convert the estate into a bed-and-breakfast.

Joe Port and Joe Wiseman serve as the showrunners of the entertaining sitcom. What follows is a heartfelt comedy with a bunch of lovable ghosts roaming around the majestic estate they reside in. Along with the protagonists and the spooky bunch of dead, the sumptuous estate in which the sitcom is shot is awe-inspiring. Acting as a character itself, the estate presents the perfect setting for the playfulness of the ghosts by binding them together. Captivated by the beauty of ‘Ghosts,’ we have covered the filming locations in detail. Let’s take a look!

Ghosts Filming Locations

The filming of ‘Ghosts’ takes place in several locations in the US and Canada. The production of the pilot, which was supposed to start in March 2020 in Los Angeles, took place in December 2020 because of the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. Los Angeles, California

The pilot of ‘Ghosts’ was shot in an estate at the South San Rafael Avenue, Pasadena. The iconic estate, which is also the home of Bruce Wayne in the 1966 film ‘Batman,’ sets the premise for the sitcom. The highlight of the show, the vintage estate, offers everything a supernatural narrative demands. In the sitcom, the ancestral property is passed over to Samantha after the death of her aunt. With all its glory, the grand mansion creates an appeal that enhances the outlook of the show.

After shooting the pilot episode, the production team of the sitcom moved to Canada, specifically in Montreal. In an interview given to CBS Denver, Asher Grodman, who plays Trevor in the show, briefed about the relocation of the filming from LA to Montreal, “This is a team sport. They rebuilt this house in Montreal and the attention to detail is incredible.” The crew went to great lengths to make the filming possible in Montreal by rebuilding the estate and the premise of the show.

Cbs' ghosts: every ghost time period & backstory explained.

The CBS sitcom Ghosts features eight characters who died during different historical periods. Here's a guide to each one's backstory and death.

  • Ghosts on CBS' Ghosts come from various time periods, forming a unique family. Their deaths range from lightning strikes to diseases.
  • Thorfinn, the oldest ghost, is a Viking who died around the 1020s. Sasappis, a Lenape man, died in the 1520s and loves discussing deaths.
  • Alberta, a jazz singer from the 1920s, was poisoned by her bootlegger boyfriend. Pete, who died in 1985, is a chipper ghost with no unique powers.

CBS' Ghosts features a cast full of spectral characters that each hail from a distinct time period, making fans wonder what order did the ghosts die in Ghosts ? Each ghost comes with its own unique backstory and death. Though each of the eight ghosts has a wildly different perspective based on their experiences throughout history, they nonetheless form a sort of family, which is one of the show's greatest charms. After all, being stuck with the same people for all eternity allows for plenty of time to get to know each other. Ghosts stars Utkarsh Ambudkar and Rose McIver as Jay and Sam, a young couple who inherit a mansion in upstate New York.

In an adaptation of a BBC show of the same name, the couple discovers the house also comes with several ghostly inhabitants, who Sam is able to see after a near-death experience. These are Thorfinn (Devan Long), Sasappis (Román Zaragoza), Isaac (Brandon Scott Jones), Hetty (Rebecca Wisocky), Alberta (Danielle Pinnock), Flower (Sheila Carrasco), Pete (Richie Moriarty), and Trevor (Asher Grodman). Although other ghosts feature in the show, such as those in the basement " cholera pit ," the British soldiers from the shed outside, and even Hetty's nefarious husband Elias, the main eight are the most fully fleshed-out and will continue to be in Ghosts season 3 .

RELATED: Original Shows On CBS All Access (Paramount+) Ranked According To IMDb

Unlike Marvel's Thor from the MCU , with whom he shares a name, Thorfinn is not a god, although he does have some pseudo-lightning powers. The oldest ghost in the show, Thorfinn is a Viking who traveled to North America but was accidentally left behind by his compatriots. The Vikings' historical voyage was about 1000 years ago, meaning Thorfinn died around the 1020s. He died on the land that would one day hold Sam and Jay's house after being struck by lightning, which leaves him with the ghostly ability to make lights flicker. Never one to pass up a good discussion about fishing or fighting wild animals, Thorfinn is a Viking through and through.

When it comes to what order the ghosts died in Ghosts , Sasappis is about 500 years younger than Thorfinn, dying in the 1520s. He's a Lenape man, an indigenous group from the Hudson Valley in New York as well as parts of present-day Delaware, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania. Unlike most of the other specters in Ghosts , Sasappis has yet to reveal how he died, but one of his favorite pastimes is reminding all the others of how they met their ends, most of which he was there for.

While this ghost's backstory remains unknown, it is revealed in Ghosts season 1, episode 7 that a woman Sass loved in life, Shiki, is also a ghost, and he tries to get in touch with her. Sasappis is also a big fan of watching TV and often asks Sam and Jay to cook junk food, so he can smell it.

A Revolutionary War captain who knew the likes of real-life figures Alexander Hamilton and Aaron Burr , Isaac Higgentoot unfortunately died of dysentery before he could make any lasting historical mark of his own. Killed by the disease sometime between 1775 and 1783, when the American Revolutionary War was taking place, Isaac now has the ghost power to make people smell sewage any time they walk through him.

Despite these circumstances, however, Isaac always maintains his pride, as evidenced when he has to negotiate with the Redcoats who also died on the property back in the day, including British officer Nigel, who Isaac has an obvious crush on despite having accidentally shot him.

Sam and Jay's house, Woodstone Manor, was built in the late 1800s by a family of robber barons, and it's this lineage and time period that Hetty hails from. But Hetty has started to gradually let go of her antiquated notions and bigotries as Ghosts goes on. As with Sasappis, Hetty's death is also still a mystery, but given the corruption she was a part of during her life and the vile nature of her husband Elias, she certainly had no shortage of enemies who might have wanted to off her.

There was only one thing known about her death. Hetty was wearing dry clothes and died in heels. As for ghost powers, Hetty hasn't displayed any unique abilities yet but does manage to possess Jay in season 1, episode 10, which is something all ghosts seem capable of.

A jazz singer from the 1920s, Alberta finally confirms her suspicions in Ghosts episode 9 that she was poisoned by her no-good bootlegger boyfriend. But while Alberta has an unfortunate Great Gatsby -style death, she also embodies a lot of what made the 20s roaring, as well. From her tasseled flapper attire to her lively vocabulary, and from her confident singing voice to her fiery passion for women's rights, Alberta is one of Ghosts ' most engaging and fun characters.

Fittingly, her special ghostly ability is that she can be heard humming by the living when she so chooses. And although Alberta offers constant reminders of all the low lives and two-timers she's dated, she may have a romance arc with Pete in store later on.

As her name suggests, Flower is a hippie from the 1960s who was killed by a bear on the Woodstone property after leaving a nearby music festival. If she looks familiar to some viewers, it's because Sheila Carrasco, who plays her, has had brief appearances on other shows like The Good Place and Jane the Virgin . Flower's ghost power is that people who walk through her get high for about an hour, and she herself is often forgetful and off chasing butterflies. But Flower has interesting depth to her character as well, as she was involved in multiple cults and cult-like organizations in her life, and even helped one such group rob a bank.

Of all the eponymous characters in Ghosts , Pete's death is the most apparent. Shot in the neck by one of the Scouts from the troop he was leading, Pete met his untimely demise in 1985 and still has the arrow in his neck to prove it. Despite the tragedy of his passing, however, and the later revelation in Ghosts episode 6 that his wife was cheating on him in life, Pete is perpetually chipper in Ghosts . What is Pete's ghost power? While he doesn't possess a unique ghostly ability, Pete's affinity for compromise and teambuilding makes him a crucial member of the ghosts' de facto family and could earn him a shot at romance with Alberta later on.

Trevor is the youngest of the ghosts, whose special power is touching or moving solid objects (with great effort). A spoiled yuppie party boy who died in the late 1990s, Trevor is all about popularity and scoring attractive women. Trevor died when he and his colleagues went to stay in the Woodstone Mansion, and he took some pills with some alcohol while partying. This caused him to overdose, and he died of a heart attack. His friends just dumped his body in the lake and never talked about it again. Only Sasappis originally knew the truth of his death, but Jake fished his head out of the late in "Trevor's Body."

Most of the ghosts in Ghosts are kind, funny, and often helpful. However, there is one ghost who was mostly only had a short stint on the show and is none of those things. Elias Woodstone is Hetty's husband (and cousin). While he was alive, his marriage was not good because he was controlling and had several mistresses. His death came when he ended up locked in his vault by its designer after Elias slept with his wife. He died in the vault and his ghost reminded bound to the house. He was trapped in there for a century until Sam and Jay found the vault and opened it, freeing him.

However, something terrifying happened to Elias. He was the only ghost in this house that ever ended up sent to Hell . Hetty gave her dead husband a chance to redeem himself from his past sins, and he refused, saying there is no such thing as good and evil. As a result, she told him to "go to Hell" and he did. Humorously, she made the other ghosts think that was her special power after that.

There are also some recurring ghosts on the show, and when it comes to Crash and the answer to what order did the ghosts die in Ghosts , it is hard to tell here. From his look, he appears to be from the 1950s, but he could also be younger and just dressed the part. Crash wears a black leather jacket, white t-shirt, and blue jeans, and looks like a James Dean-styled character, which explains the possible era where he died. It is unknown how Crash died, but he was decapitated, so it is possible he was in a vehicular accident. He only appeared in the pilot and later in the episode "Ghost Father of the Bride" in season 2.

Like Crash, Stephanie is another ghost from Ghosts who only appeared a few times as a recurring specter. She died in the 1980s, and while she was born in the same year as Trevor, she still looks like a teenager since he died a decade later. She was an '80s mean girl who died on Prom Night. Stephanie was the victim of a slasher killer. She and her boyfriend were parking at Woodstone Mansion and were about to hook up when an escaped chainsaw murderer showed up and attacked and killed her. She also has a nickname from the other ghosts, who refer to her as "Attic Girl." She ends up dating one of the Chlorea ghosts.

The Cholera Ghosts

In the original British version of Ghosts , there were ghosts who lived off by themselves in the mansion known as the Plague Ghosts. The U.S. version of the comedy series has a similar group, known collectively as the Cholera Ghosts. As their name mentions, they died of cholera, and they all live in the basement of the mansion. There is no telling how many of them there are, but there are three named on the show (Stuart, Nancy, and Creepy Dirk) and three more named in the credits (Nigel, Catherine, and Cody).

These were all people infected with cholera who were placed in the pest house, where they were supposed to get treated, but were left to die by starvation, illness, or suffocation from living in the basement. While not trapped in the basement as ghosts, that is still where they live as it is where they feel most comfortable. These ghosts died sometime between 1832 and 1870, which puts their deaths between Isaac and Hetty.

The British Ghosts

Finally, the British Ghosts don't live in the house. Instead, they live in a shed on the property based on an agreement made after they died in the Revolutionary War. Since they died then, they know Isaac, but they mostly keep in the shed and to themselves. Every few years, they come back up to the main house to redraw the boundary lines, although some ghosts feel it is because British Ghost Nigel does it to flirt with Isaac. Outside of Nigel, the other two known British Ghosts are Baxter and Jenkins.

Nigel is a lieutenant colonel while Baxter and Jenkins are his two officers. As for how these ghosts died in Ghosts , Nigel's death was a terrible accident. Isaac was admiring Nigel from the telescope on his rifle when he accidentally sneezed, pulled the trigger, and killed Nigel, who was reading a book at the time. Isaac later apologized as a ghost 133 years later, and Nigel accepted the apology. In season 2, the two start a romantic ghostly relationship. The new CBS comedy Ghosts is based on a British sitcom of the same name.

Richie Moriarty, Brandon Scott Jones, Sheila Carrasco and Rebecca Wisocky in Ghosts

CBS' Ghosts was one of the new shows for the network in the 2021-2022 TV season, and it proved to be a hit. Adapted from a British TV series of the same name, Ghosts joins CBS’ comedy repertoire of Young Sheldon , United States of Al and B Positive on Thursdays, as well as The Neighborhood and Bob Hearts Abishola across the week.

Joe Port and Joe Wiseman, a writing duo that have previous credits for New Girl and Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist , developed the series for American TV from Tom Kingsley’s original series Ghosts , which debuted on BBC One in 2019 and is still on air in the UK.

Now that the American version of Ghosts has come to the end of the first season and already has earned a renewal for season 2 , here is what you need to know about how to watch Ghosts season 1 and the bits of info we have on season 2 so far.

How to watch Ghosts season 1

All episodes of Ghosts season 1 are available to stream right now on the Paramount Plus streaming service. Pluto TV, a free ad-supported service, also has most of the Ghosts season 1 episodes. Episodes and the full season are also available to rent digitally on-demand.

CBS may also opt to air some episodes of Ghosts season 1 on the network between now and the new fall TV season. To catch those, you'll need to have access to CBS through either a traditional pay-TV cable/satellite service (all of which offer CBS), a TV antenna to receive local CBS station signals or a live TV streaming service that carries CBS: fuboTV , Hulu with Live TV and YouTube TV .

UK viewers are finally getting the chance to see the US adaptation of Ghosts , with the entire first season of the show available to stream starting November 20, 2022.

When is the next Ghosts episode?

Ghosts season 1 has aired all of its episodes. It has already been renewed for a second season, which is expected to premiere on CBS as part of the network's fall 2022 lineup. A specific date is not available at this time.

What is the plot of Ghosts?

Here is the official synopsis for Ghosts , per CBS:

“ Ghosts is a single-camera comedy about Samantha and Jay, a cheerful freelance journalist and up-and-coming chef from the city, respectively, who throw both caution and money to the wind when they decide to convert a huge rundown country estate they inherited into a bed & breakfast—only to find it’s inhabited by the many spirits of deceased residents who now call it home. The departed souls are a close-knit, eclectic group that includes a saucy Prohibition-era lounge singer; a pompous 1700’s Militiaman; a ‘60s hippie fond of hallucinogens; an overly upbeat ‘80s scout troop leader; a cod-obsessed Viking explorer from 1009; a slick ‘90s finance bro; a sarcastic and witty Native from the 1500s; and a society woman and wife of an 1800’s robber baron who is Samantha’s ancestor, to name a few. If the spirits were anxious about the commotion a renovation and B&B will create in their home, it’s nothing compared to when they realize Samantha is the first live person who can see and hear them.”

SPOILERS AHEAD as we are going to get into some of the events of the Ghosts season 1 finale. So if you're not caught up probably best to go watch the show before reading on.

In "Farnsby & B," Sam and Jay are just about ready to officially open their B&B, but realize that they have a nearby competitor, the Farnsby & B. Sam and Jay challenge the rival establishment to a game of pickle ball with the winner getting to remain open. They beat Farnsby & B and are now ready to welcome their first guests. Or so they think.

Earlier in the episode, after Sam and the ghostly occupants of the house have gotten to know each other, Thor says that she can lift the curse he set upon the house at the beginning of the season. However, worried that doing so would prevent her from continuing to see the ghosts, and perhaps wondering what's the worse that could happen, Sam chooses not to lift the curse.

Just as the first guests arrive, the house crumbles to ruins. Is this the result of Thor's curse or is it simply a coincidence?

Who is in the Ghosts cast?

Ghosts is certainly an ensemble comedy, with the primary cast being made up of Rose McIver, Utkarsh Ambudkar, Danielle Pinnock, Brandon Scott Jones, Sheila Carrasco, Richie Moriarty, Devon Chandler Long, Asher Grodman, Román Zaragoza, Rebecca Wisocky.

Here is who they all play in the show:

  • Rose McIver - Sam
  • Utkarsh Ambudkar - Jay
  • Danielle Pinnock - Alberta
  • Brandon Scott Jones - Isaac
  • Sheila Carrasco - Flower
  • Richie Moriarty - Pete
  • Devon Chandler Long - Thorfinn
  • Asher Grodman - Trevor
  • Román Zaragoza - Sasappis
  • Rebecca Wisocky - Hetty

No official announcement has been made about who is returning for Ghosts season 2, but we can make a pretty good guess that McIver and Ambudkar, along with the main ensemble of ghosts, will all be back.

Now that the season has concluded, stars Rose McIver and Brandon Scott Jones spoke about the events of the finale and their characters' arcs. They do go into spoilers so be sure you're caught up before reading them.

Is there a Ghosts trailer?

CBS released a two-minute trailer for Ghosts that introduces fans to both Sam and Jay as well as their new ghost friends. Watch it below.

Ghosts: How the spirited British sitcom found a new haunt in the US

  • Published 29 May 2022

The cast of the US version of Ghosts

TV comedy Ghosts has become one of the most popular new sitcoms on both sides of the Atlantic, after a US remake of the beloved BBC original became a hit. The makers of both versions discuss how they leave viewers in high spirits.

Since it started in 2019, BBC One's Ghosts has been a rare thing in the age of streaming choice and splintered viewing - a sitcom that the whole family can enjoy together.

And since the US version of the show launched earlier this year, it has become an even rarer thing - a successful American remake of a British sitcom.

The history of cross-Atlantic comedy remakes is littered with short-lived flops, but Ghosts has become the most successful translation since The Office and Veep (based on The Thick Of It).

The first season of the CBS adaptation ended last month as the top-rated new series on US TV, according to the network, as well as the number one comedy on streaming service Paramount+.

Joe Wiseman, one of the lead writers and producers of the US version, says the first time he watched the BBC original, he "loved it right away".

"You could just tell immediately that it was a unique show, a unique premise," he says. "And it was just so funny."

The British series was created by the team behind Horrible Histories. "Behind the idea was just asking, 'what can we come up with that means we get to dress up and be silly, and in a haunted house?'" Mathew Baynton, one of the team, explained backstage at the recent BBC Comedy Festival in Newcastle.

However, the team initially dismissed the concept, not thinking there would be much potential for humour in spirits who can't really touch anything, go anywhere, and don't, since they're already dead, have much to worry about.

But then they realised having very different personalities from different historical eras who cannot escape each other, and are stuck together in a sort of cheerful purgatory for eternity, could actually be very funny.

The cast of the BBC's Ghosts

The characters in the British original include caveman Robin, trouserless Tory MP Julian, a self-important Army officer known as The Captain, needy Georgian noblewoman Kitty, and affable scout leader Pat. They are joined in their crumbling stately home by a young (alive) couple - one of whom can see their phantom housemates.

Ben Willbond, who plays The Captain, says: "It's basically this largely dysfunctional but very close family living together - arguing, resolving their differences, getting on, ultimately staying as entrenched as they ever were, but learning a little bit about themselves every week."

Baynton, who also plays hopelessly romantic poet Thomas, describes the show as "a really warm embrace of a family sitcom".

Willbond adds: "It's such a such a lovely feeling. When people talk to me about it, that's one of the first things they say, every time, 'oh, I can sit down with my kids'."

Where are the new classic sitcoms?

  • Can Call My Agent's British remake recapture the magic?

The best and worst of US remakes of UK shows

The real secret, Baynton believes, is it shows that "we can all get on, however much we disagree - if we're really stuck with each other and we look each other in the eye, we can get on".

He adds: "I feel as though that's probably why it's working both sides of the pond. People are reassured and craving something that says, 'it's all right, we can get along'.

"There's such an endless howl of anger and bile that people are directing at each other every day. So I guess it's a tonic to that. I think that's what the idea happened to have, kind of by accident."

The cast of the US version of Ghosts

Joe Port, who runs the US version with Wiseman, echoes that their series is "a very feelgood show, just like the British one is".

"It's got this feelgood sort of warm hug feel, while also being hard funny," he says on Zoom from Los Angeles.

Some of the US characters have been clearly borrowed from the British version, like scout leader Pete and the upper-class Hetty.

Others are similar but different - a Viking instead of a caveman, and a trouserless Wall Street "finance bro" instead of a Tory MP. "That was also a funny guy to have be pantsless," says Port.

A few are unique to the US, like a Native American, who was "the number one character that we had to have in the show", Port says. There is also a 1960s hippy called Flower and 1920s jazz singer Alberta.

When it began, the reception from US TV critics was mixed but generally warm, with TV Line calling it "a wonderful surprise" and Variety saying it's "charming enough to merit sticking around", although The Hollywood Reporter said it "could use an infusion of zaniness to live up to its Beetlejuice-y aspirations".

US Ghosts lead writers and producers Joe Wiseman (left) and Joe Port

Port and Wiseman have also worked on the US version of The Office and a remake of The IT Crowd. Port recalls how Greg Daniels, who took The Office from Slough to Scranton, initially followed the British formula before taking it in new directions.

"I guess if there was any guidance, it was sort of seeing how Greg had adapted The Office," he says.

With Ghosts, "we didn't want to fix what wasn't broken", he continues. "But once that premise was up and running, we departed and were able to chart our own path for the most part."

The question with TV remakes is normally, why bother if the original is so good?

The cast of the BBC's Ghosts

With Ghosts, the reason is clearer than most, because each country has a different history and a different set of historical characters who could be hanging around in the afterlife.

There are no other international versions of Ghosts yet, according to BBC Studios, whose LA arm co-produces the US version. But it can't be long before more countries find some happy phantoms in their own old houses.

"It just felt like there was a reason to adopt this one," Wiseman says. "It was seen as very portable. And it seems like there should be many different versions of Ghosts all over the world, as far as I'm concerned."

The UK Ghosts is available to stream on BBC iPlayer, with a fourth series coming soon. The US Ghosts can be streamed on Paramount+ in the US.

Critic Reviews for Ghosts: Season 1

Audience reviews for ghosts: season 1.

The BBC version is so much better. The acting is so cringey on this version. The character development is lacking and all of the writing couldn't be more cheesy. I'm appalled they couldn't do better.

house on ghost tv show

One of my favorite broadcast TV Shows on TV right now. I love the characters development both the Alive and the Dead ones. Well written, very entertaining, and funny. Also, if you like the show the British version is very good as well.

An interesting premise. I enjoyed while I was sick on the couch.

An excellent reworking of the formula for American audiences. After a slightly shaky start the cast grow well into their parts and do a fine job with the new characters. Thor especially improves and becomes a fine addition. It's all very enjoyable. Almost as likeable as the excellent UK version, which is high praise indeed. Very much looking forward to seeing future series, especially as the UK version has now sadly ended.

love the original BBC show. This American one is really awful. The acting is atrocious, all the actors sound as if they are in a kids Saturday afternoon special. It is over-acted and under-written. The lead character has to be able to carry the show with some acting chops and charisma... feels like she just walked off a B-list off-broadway musical.

Rating: 8/10. 80/100

I really like the show. I really want to know how each of them gets "sucked off" haha I hope they all do go on peacefully. I am curious about where it all goes next. Excellent casting!

Great show, great cast, my only gripe is that Betsy Sodaro needs a bigger role. Put her in more episodes!

Sorry, but what I just watched of this for thirty minutes was a gigantic pile of w@nk. Thor character is terrible casting closely followed by all other characters. A brief mention of nape was a dim glimmer of hope in a cesspool of nothingness. I feel bitter that I wasted thirty minutes of my life enduring this. If you disagree then this only shows what is wrong with this world.

Halfway through the pilot I began experiencing deja vu, suspecting I'd seen this, then remembered having come across some of the episodes of the original UK version, off of which this version is based. It's one of the very rare occurrences that I've found the US version is actually a bit better than its original UK version. The humour is balanced, excellent character development with both the ghosts as well as "the Livings."

Viral Video Shows Young Girls in a House on Epstein's Island?

The video was circulated on social media at least since 2019., aleksandra wrona, published jan 8, 2024.

About this rating

On Jan. 4, 2024, a video was shared on X (formerly Twitter), allegedly showing "very young girls" in a house on the island of the late, convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. "One of hundreds of videos of the girls from the interior of Epstein's island," one of the Spanish-language posts captioned the viral video. As of this writing, one post with the in-question video gained more than 1.5 million views on X.

The post's description read:

One publicly released vid out of hundreds..showing these very young girls from the interior of Epstein's island. What is it they’re doing, and to what, and WHY!? WHAT ARE THEY PREPARING!??? What do you see??

Epstein was back in the news in early 2024 after a judge ordered documents unsealed in a lawsuit filed against his associate/partner in crime, Ghislaine Maxwell. Epstein died in jail at his own hands in 2019 while awaiting trial on charges of sex trafficking young girls. The unsealing of the documents caused a stir on social media, with various rumors appearing on the topic.

In short, we found no evidence the viral video revealed girls on Epstein's island.

We used Google reverse-image search to investigate the origins of the video and found it was shared multiple times in 2019 and 2020. For instance, one post on Reddit linked the video with actor Tom Hanks with a caption, "Man Claims Tom Hanks is a Pedophile, releases video upon death." Moreover, we found instances of the video being shared in 2019 in a Facebook post and on an online 4chan forum .

Multiple social media users also linked the video to the QAnon and Pizzagate conspiracy theories, as well as Isaac Kappy , an American actor, musician, and conspiracy theorist .

Video shared by the actor Isaac Kappy before he was killed for reporting the Elite Human Trafficking and Child Abuse Network. The video was recorded on Jeffrey Epstein's private Pedophile’s Island. Isaac "committed suicide by jumping off a bridge" #PIZZAGATE #PizzaGateIsReal pic.twitter.com/vwerTnllnj — ANONYMOUS (@Anonymous2Hack) June 3, 2020

"Video posted by actor and musician Isaac Kappy, who was found dead shortly after," a post in Portuguese shared on X in February 2023 captioned the viral video. For reference, Politifact reported in January 2023 that social media users believed "Kappy was murdered for exposing Hollywood pedophiles," and did not commit suicide as officials informed .

Finally, various social media users suggested the video was not captured in a house on Epstein's island. "It is the 5-star Hotel - Titanic Mardin Palace, a Disney hotel in Turkey for children with water parks," one X user claimed .

"This was from the Anjana hotel in Turkey," another user commented .

We compared the in-question video with the spa in The Land of Legends Kingdom Hotel videos and photographs shared on TripAdvisor and found they showed a similar room. However, given that we could not confirm it independently, and that a similarly looking Turkish bath could possibly be found in other hotels, we were unable to determine the exact location of the scene visible in the viral video.

All in all, because we found no evidence for the viral video being captured in a house on Epstein's island, we have rated this claim as "Unfounded."

In late 2022, House of the Dragon breathed much-needed life (and, well, fire) into the HBO line-up after the fantasy hit Game of Thrones had reached its less-than-lauded conclusion in 2019. The HotD cast members—some already well-recognized celebrities and others newcomers to the industry—shot into the spotlight as the series dominated streaming charts and social media for weeks. But those same cast members, including Emma D’Arcy, Olivia Cooke, Eve Best, Matt Smith, Milly Alcock, Emily Carey, Paddy Considine, Steve Toussaint, and numerous others, were conspicuously absent during the 2023 Emmy Awards on Jan. 15, 2024, where House of the Dragon was nominated for Best Drama Series.

You might have already deciphered why: Although House of the Dragon itself clinched a nomination, none of the cast themselves earned nods in the acting categories. (For context, this year’s categories were stacked with talent from Succession , The White Lotus , The Last of Us , and beyond.) Many of the HotD performers are based in England, which means making the trip to Los Angeles for the Emmys, on the chance House of the Dragon might earn Best Drama Series—unlikely, given the momentum of fellow HBO frontrunner Succession —would be a huge investment. Snubbed as they were, the group seems to have decided it was smarter to stay home.

Still, House of the Dragon itself is forging ahead for season 2 , and the next Emmys ceremony might look very different if the cast reignites the first season’s fan fervor. In November 2023, HBO CEO Casey Bloys confirmed that season 2 was “done shooting and in post,” and would finally return in summer 2024. And even should the cast avoid the 2024 Emmys, expect numerous additional opportunities for them to storm the red carpet: Author and executive producer George R. R. plans for House of the Dragon to run for at least four seasons . Better study up on your dragons .
