This fills my fall vibes to the fullest. What more could you want besides hot apple cider, apple cider donuts, corn mazes, pumpkins and gourds of all variety and plenty of activities! I'd say the atmosphere for activities definitely gears towards children. We got apple cider donuts that were so fresh and crispy. Not overly sweet. You could hear the subtle crunch. Perfection. It was chilly so waiting in line for the hot apple cider was worth it. Also, I was so clumsy, I dropped my bag of six donuts as I was at the counter and they replaced them for free. Highly recommend. And if you don't even want to come for the activities... and just the donuts...you don't even need to pay to enter.

Amazing farm! One of my favorites! However....... I spent an hour and a half driving to get there for a second visit only to find the farm was closed. Let me explain... on the website it said open 9-10pm, wrong. I go there ask two employees where to purchase tickets because the farm has a million people there but no ticket booths, noted where they were my first visit. They tell me "the backyard closes at 6pm" apparently they call the farm the "backyard". The website does say the "backyard and animals close at 6" however I never would have known they call the whole farm, activities, food etc "the back yard". I expressed disappointment and the confusion and they basically said "sorry about that". The only option was some bakery items, I could buy pumpkins and or wait until the evening (a few hours longer) for haunted forest or corn maze. I was super disappointed and I wish they could be more clear on the website. Thankfully I didn't have my son with me because that would have been such a waste of 3 hours of driving for no farm experience. Willing to try again but the verbiage is not clear at all.

Hi Carlina, We're sorry it was confusing and would happily take suggestions for clarifying. It is very hard to put into words our seasonal changes. We have tried to indicate clearly in several places that the backyard closes at 6 pm and it looks like you did notice that on the website. As you could see by the guests that were at the farm we do have many guests that are at the farm between the backyard closing and haunted forest opening because we are still open for the bakery, brats, pretzels, produce and pumpkins, and the corn maze. As far as not having the ticket booth open, on weekdays (you visited on a Friday) we sell our bakery and tickets out of the bakery barn, because our guests tend to buy both bakery and tickets and we aren't busy enough to staff the ticket booth. You are correct in that the farm is set-up differently for our different seasons, even different days during the same season (weekday vs. weekend) but we had two signs as you walk between the bakery barn and pumpkin area that tickets and bakery were to the right. We do make many seasonal changes to keep the farm fun and fresh for our returning guests and to welcome guests of varied interests.

We have been going to Schuster's for 15 years and every year we are met with fun new activities and surprises! Our kids are now older but still enjoy all the fun barnyard activities ("Curtain Chaos" is a forever favorite!) and the hayride out to the pumpkin patch. The bakery items are always delicious, and the employees are always friendly and helpful. Pro tips we have learned over the years...buy your tickets online so you don't have to wait in line and save a little money, on beautiful fall days, get there early or it is packed, and finally - if you are a busy family who can't make until the last possible day, they will let you demolish pumpkins with baseball bats - which is actually a lot harder than you would guess! We suggest Schuster's to all our friends and never had a bad experience!

haunted forest deerfield

Schuster's Farm is such a fun place to visit in the fall. Schuster's have corn mazes, hayrides, pumpkins, apple cider, donuts, haunted attractions, pumpkin cannons, farm animals and much more! They have two great corn mazes; a large one that has two phases and a "small maze". They are both really fun and well kept up. They have a hayride during the day you can take to go pick pumpkins as well as a haunted one at night. There's a family fun option that includes the park, hayride, and more! I don't have kids yet so I haven't tried that option yet. Schuster's is a great place to spend a fall day and has so much to do. They have a large parking lot with plenty of spots, great prices, and an easily accessible location. Go check it out!

Photo of Jacob H.

I give it three stars only because the haunted forest isn't that scary on the wall ways. There needs to be more jump scares. But for the indoor I give it a 4 out of ten. Those are the ones that got me.

Photo of Brian J.

A nice place to take the family with many of activities. Haven't been here in a while and it's very busy on the weekends! Lots of good food and drinks and the pumpkin shooter really launches!

Great place for kids in summer and fall. Has the tradition petting farm attractions like a corn maze, pumpkin patch, haunted forest and farm animals. But also does other fun events like the Blooms and Butterflies flower and sunflower fields that are great for pictures! Lots of different play equipment for kids of all ages, can spend hours here. The goats are the real highlight of the farm animals. Bakery has Apple cider donuts and other treats. A must-do every year for us!

What an impressive grouping of activities for kids! They have a jumping pillow, petting zoo, tires, mini golf, apple cannons, pig races, gem mining, and so much more! Of course there's also a corn maze - and all for $12.95 (we went 9/23 and it was only $10)! We've been to a lot of corn mazes, but this one has the most activities other than that! We had a blast!

Haunting History

The Haunted Forest at Schuster’s Farm was not born overnight, but has been a constantly evolving project that started as a simple idea from a Deerfield resident. In 1999, Phil Montalto came to the farm with the request to start a haunted hayride as a fundraiser for the Deerfield Community Center to raise funds for DCC programs. Scary scenes were set up around the farm along a wagon route. The one night event drew a crowd of 199 people. The success spurred another year, and the crowd was even bigger, making a second wagon a necessity. Local celebrity Matt Kenseth was among the group, and his excitement convinced the group that it should become an official “haunt” and an annual event. By the fifth year, the Haunted Hayride had grown to an 8 wagon, 100 actor (all community center volunteers) event with scenes created by inmates from the Thompson Correctional Center as part of the DCC-Thompson Center outreach program. That year also saw the addition of the Haunted Corn Maze, where costumed actors hid in the maze and scared visitors.

In 2004, shifts in volunteer options at DCC caused the partnership to discontinue for this event. A friend of the family was a student at UW Platteville, and he convinced his fraternity brothers at Sigma Pi to come and act as “spooks”. The Haunted Corn Maze continued for two more years but frustration grew due to drought conditions that made it harder to scare people and more difficult to control the crowds moving through the maze. During one night of haunting in the last year, as Don stood looking out over the drought stricken maze, he was able to see his forest, and the germ of a new idea sprouted! Why not move the haunt to the forest, where it could be more permanent and more elaborate? Throughout deer hunting season, he spent time in his tree stand working out the logistics of the endeavor in his head. In the spring of 2006, work began with the help of Mark Phillips, Tom Tallman, and the entire Schuster family. Knowing the Haunted Forest would attract even more people than ever, bigger and better transportation would be necessary, so the Schusters searched for and found old cotton wagons in Missouri that could be modified to suit their needs for hauling the masses to the forest. Don said that the first forest was by far the “hokiest” endeavor, but it was a huge success!

The next five years saw the continued growth and evolution of the forest, and the Schusters continued to work with various fraternities at UW Platteville and UW Madison, but it became increasingly difficult to coordinate schedules and transportation for busy college students. In 2011, the decision was made to go on a search for haunt actors through an extensive interview and audition process, and the farm now employs a very talented group to terrify and delight the crowds! (If you think you are interested and are up to the task of scaring the pants off of people, please see our employment page!) The Haunted Forest’s popularity has grown tremendously, with the lines to prove it. The main advertising has been word of mouth, which is pretty amazing! With the Haunted Forest taking on a life of its own, the farm now has a twisted 12 person crew that works part-time year round to plan, build and set up the forest for each fall. The farm is proud to be the leader of haunt venues in South/Central Wisconsin. Just wait ‘til you see what is being planned for the 10th season of the Haunted Forest…coming in October 2015!

Schuster's had great scares

Schuster's had great scares, trails and good food. Its pumpkins were the best I had in recent times. The haunted hayride could scare the crap out of you. The lines were a bit long though. Ticket prices were OK. The staff were friendly and helpful as well. Check it out.

Email Verified Great time well spent

It was a great time well spent at the farms. You need to make sure you have enough time to spend and visit all the little attractions and shops. The kids could play hours in the corn pit feeding goats. They loved the pig races and ball shooting games. The donuts and Apple candies were yummy… we are certainly be back.

We had a wonderful time

We had a wonderful time in the corn maze! All the actors did a phenomenal task of scaring us. Loved their costumes and make-ups and their energy level was very high. The set up was very similar to any traditional corn maze, but application of background themed song was unique and it was damn scaring while encountering actors draped in the costumes of monsters/zombies. The path along the maze wasn’t easy and it became confusing. At some times, but it was fun to get lost and expect the unexpected. The staff was very friendly. Certainly, a great place to spend quality time with family and enjoy multiple events at a single place.

Wonderful place for families

One of the best farms I’ve been to. Amazing place and my kids had a wonderful time. The scares inside the haunted house were pretty average but looking at the admission fees it’s very effective. I loved the hayrides, bon fire and ample space for kids to immerse themselves into nature’s play. A wonderful place to visit along with the family. I loved it and definitely visiting it soon. Highly recommended!!

Email Verified Forest scares were awesome

I and GF had a great time at the Schuster's Farm on a Saturday night. It was my first experience in a haunted forest.. I loved the sets and forest scares. The corn maze was awesome.. it also had some of the great scares. My GF screamed and jumped few times. We also took home four pumpkins. Overall, it was scary and lots of fun. I would definitely want to come back.

Email Verified This year was not that good

Highly disappointed. Last year Haunted Forest was a blast and loved it so much that I was waiting eagerly for the next season. But this year I visited with high expectation of a nightmare trail by just pissed off. It not nearly scary this year it was just a ride. Other attractions were fine but haunted forest was too lame.

Email Verified Amazing farm with multiple attractions

Amazing farm with multiple attractions and we loved the corn maze and haunted forest. We visited in a group of six including two kids and we all had a blast. At the very outset, queue was very long and this needs to be improved to reduce the waiting time. Impressed by the set design and all forest hunters and creatures did a fantastic job. We screamed, jumped, laughed and ran so often. In-fact they customized the scares for kids, this was really incredible. Overall, a perfect hang out place for families and we really loved it and recommend it to everyone.

Email Verified Had great fun

Went to Schuster's Farm with my whole family this Halloween. It is great for little kids, but still enjoyable and fun for older ones. The hayride was great fun.. had some scary characters hidden in the expanses. The corn maze also had some bone-chilling scares. My mom screamed as one of the characters started to chase her. The kids had a great time at the pumpkin patch. We also had the best donut and apple cider from here. Also not to miss is the lavender infused honey. Ticket prices were reasonable given the things on offer. I recommend this place for everyone.

Email Verified Ample attractions

Apple ciders, donuts, fudge, kettle corns, caramel apples and lavender infused honey… you must be wondering if this is all in a café.. no… its Schuster's Farm and Haunted Forest… with a fresh baked goodies and farm produce it also has haunts… you will get lost in the acres of corn maze and the wagon ride through the pumpkin field was quite fun. You will have a laughing time playing in the dozens of attractions in the barnyard. Finally you get to take home some of the best pumpkins. This farm is quite child friendly and there is ample attractions to play with and spend idle time… you could easily spend a day here at a moderate price… we will be a repeated patrons for sure.

Perfect weekend getaway

We loved everything about Schuster's … and beware… the day time attractions are not for those who are looking for creepy scares… this is more family oriented… and a perfect weekend getaway… do visit and have fun. The haunted attractions starts after dusk and we are planning to come next time without kids to have some scary fun.

Performance Art--Screams and Laughter

Went there with the kids didn't expect much and was very pleasantly surprised. Yes, it is spooky and they do a great job of startling the guests. But moreso, its a very fun time. Its a worthwhile Halloween destination. Very well run.

The Clarion

Schuster’s haunted forest can be scary fun.

Schusters Haunted Forest

Mary SeGall , Staff Writer October 27, 2022

Are you afraid of the dark? Do you like things that go bump in the night? What is your greatest fear? Is it clowns, people in scary masks, being in a dark forest at night with no flashlight or someone in a scary costume following you? If you fear these than this is the places for you! Schuster’s Haunted Forest is located in Deerfield, Wisconsin and has been a fan favorite in Wisconsin for years upon years. Upon arrival you park in the packed parking lot. It is so popular good luck trying to find a parking spot! My friends and I got there around 8:30 p.m. and there were no parking spots so we had to make do. The parking lot was a dirt lot with ropes to tie off the perimeter. Walking up, there was a big barn with lights hanging. Through the open window, music could be heard from outside. Inside, people were dancing or sitting at one of the rustic picnic tables sipping on coffee, pop or beer. Right next to the barn was a cute little rustic building that looks like a little cottage of sorts. We walked inside and found all sorts of merchandise like hoodies and hats that said “Schuster’s Haunted Forest” on them. In my opinion they should have said “I survived Schuster’s Haunted Forest.” There were also things like preservatives that were sold there as well. There was a little place you could get a cup of coffee. I certainly was not going to get coffee in my system before going into a haunted forest, no way! Tickets must be bought online ahead of time. They call your party over to the ride out to the tractor ride to get to the forest. The tractor ride was maybe 10 to 15 minutes long and you went from being in an open field to slowly edging closer and closer to the dark forest. You can hear a mix of screams and laughter as you pull up closer. The light starts to fade and through the trees, the light guiding the way was that of the full moon that was out the night we went. The tractor came to a stop. Someone let us off and we waited in line to start our dark adventure. While in line there were creepy videos and music playing, people were laughing and talking, and screams could be heard from further inside the forest. There were dark figures that would come up from behind you and scare you while you waited in line to increase the, shall we say, experience. Once it was our turn, it was three people at a time. I had two friends with me so we walked together through the array of creepy dark parts of the forest, little run down haunted houses, fun house type deals to make you dizzy like you would see at a fair, people sneaking up on you from behind a tree or something like that. The whole experience lasted about an hour. I wished it lasted a bit longer, to be honest. It was a lot of fun! I recommended this for any Halloween junkie or a thrill seeker or just to see your friends jump or run like mine did! I give Schuster’s Farm two thumbs up; I really want to go again before the season is over.
