I think I kind of accepted that in buying an inflatable boat I was expecting there to be some compromises obviously, but it’s actually very easy to handle, it’s quite fast, it’s quite quick in the right conditions. I think it’s very responsive to sail as well. It sails better than I thought it would.

Video: See the MiniCat in action
Sailboat in a bag?! You heard that right. The MiniCat inflatable portable catamaran sailboat collapses down into duffel bags that you can take with you anywhere; no truck, trailer, nor slip needed. Assembly time is not much more than rigging a traditional boat, yet it offers a unique sailing experience, with acceleration only an ultralight can offer. From beginners to experienced sailors, there's a MiniCat for everyone. No wonder it’s the world’s favorite portable sailboat with more boats sold than any other brand.
Performance that you’d expect from a winged mainsail sloop-rigged sailing ultralight, capable of quick acceleration and sustained flying of a pontoon. Points well upwind thanks to the jib, though fastest point of sail are reaches. Long shoal fins minimizes leeway. Sails are balanced such that neutral weather helm can be achieved (though a pro and a con).
Extensive optional upgrades and accessories include asymmetric spinnaker, genoa, traveler, motor mount, pin-top storm sail, front storage trampoline, masthead float, carbon fiber mast, etc., more than any other brand.
With room for the whole family and the stability only a catamaran can provide, MiniCats are a great way to enjoy a day out on the water.
Toss one (or even several) in your car, camper, or yacht on your next weekend getaway. Or fly with one to your next tropical destination (airline baggage fees may apply). These boats open up new locations to explore and more sailing possibilities.

Since it’s inception in 2006, MiniCat has been handcrafting each boat with pride in the Czech Republic with European-sourced materials and components from partner manufacturers such as Ronstan, Seasure, Clamcleat, Suchomel, etc. Everything else is manufactured in-house. Their high standards of quality are evident in their casted aluminum frame pieces, laser-cut sail panels, beveled aluminum joints…the list goes on. These boats are built to last.

Your jib luff may be sagging too much, causing the jib to luff earlier than it ought to. The wire luff should be straight and bear all the load from the sails, not the forestay. The forestay is only a backup, in case the jib halyard fails. For a tight jib luff, over-tighten the forestay, hoist the jib and cleat the halyard, then back-off the forestay. Adjust your rig tension appropriately for the windspeed and sailing conditions.
You may be turning the tiller too far, causing it to act as a brake. Another tip is to allow the jib to backwind to bring the bow across before releasing and sheeting on the proper side.
Keep in mind that the pontoons sit high on the water with little wetted surface. With their long keel fins, MiniCats track very well, even when flying the windward pontoon.
Our best speed in a MiniCat 420 is around 12 knts. Keep in mind these are class D sailboats, rated for Beaufort 4 winds (up to 16kts).

A 26-year-old man drowned in a Minnesota lake after he and another man were knocked off an inflatable, authorities say.
The Dakota County Sheriff’s Office said the victim and a 19-year-old man were on an inflatable together July 13, but they were “outside the designated swimming area” of Lake Marion at Antlers Park in Lakeville.
The men did not know how to swim, according to the sheriff’s office, and a wave from a boat caused them to “fall into the water.”
A bystander rescued the 19-year-old, but the 26-year-old victim went under water, the sheriff’s office said.
A diving team found the victim’s body more than two hours later about 40 yards offshore in 8 feet of water, authorities said. He was identified as Reynaldo Antonio Patishtan Hernandez, of Northfield.
“We thank and commend the bystander for his heroic, lifesaving efforts of the 19-year-old and extend our deepest sympathies to the family and friends of Mr. Patishtan Hernandez,” the sheriff said.
Antlers Park features a “large swimming beach,” but there are no lifeguards on duty.

The boat was carrying over 80 people and bound for Turks and Caicos. The disaster underscores the gang-fueled crisis that has spurred many Haitians to leave.
By David C. Adams and James Wagner
David C. Adams reported from Miami, and James Wagner from Mexico City.
At least 40 migrants were killed when a boat they were traveling on from Haiti caught fire, a United Nations agency announced on Friday. The boat, which was carrying over 80 people, left the northern coast of Haiti on Wednesday en route for the Turks and Caicos Islands 150 miles away, the agency said .
An additional 41 migrants were rescued from the boat by the Haitian Coast Guard, the agency said, with 11 taken to a hospital. It said the boat caught fire off the coast of Cap-Haïtien, a city in northern Haiti.
The cause of the fire was not immediately known.
The episode, which took place around 3 a.m. Wednesday, was another disaster for the Caribbean country, which has been upended by rampant gang violence and an unfolding humanitarian crisis. This year, coordinated gang attacks rocked the capital, Port-au-Prince, forcing the closure of its airport for nearly three months. Since then, nearly 580,000 Haitians have been internally displaced, according to the U.N.
“This devastating event highlights the risks faced by children, women and men migrating through irregular routes, demonstrating the crucial need for safe and legal pathways for migration,” Grégoire Goodstein, the head of the U.N.’s International Organization for Migration in Haiti, said in a statement on Friday.
He said that Haiti’s socioeconomic situation was dire and that the “extreme violence” over the past months has pushed Haitians to resort to “desperate measures even more.”
The U.N.’s International Organization for Migration in Haiti said it had confirmed the number of survivors with its personnel on the ground and with Haiti’s National Office of Migration.
Cap-Haïtien, the country’s second-largest city, has been relatively unaffected by the gang violence that has wracked the country in recent months, but it is a jumping-off point for migrants. Attacks on public transportation, including on the main road between Port-au-Prince and Cap-Haïtien, has limited the potential for migrant smuggling.
Haiti has experienced a wave of gang violence that has brought surges in kidnappings, killings and the takeover of much of Port-au-Prince since the assassination in July 2021 of President Jovenel Moïse by armed men who broke into his bedroom and gunned him down in front of his wife. His killing is still under separate investigations in Haiti and Florida.
Amid the disorder, Prime Minister Ariel Henry resigned in late April. In May, Garry Conille, a former U.N. official, was appointed prime minister by a presidential transitional council.
Eight months after the United Nations authorized the use of international forces to be deployed to Haiti, the first wave of foreign law enforcement officers from Kenya arrived last month to try to wrest control of Port-au-Prince from dozens of armed groups that have attacked police stations, freed prisoners and killed with impunity.
The Kenyans in Haiti are the first of an expected 2,500-member multinational force to deploy, an effort largely organized by the Biden administration.
Since March, the U.N. migration agency said, the Haitian Coast Guard has observed an increase in the number of departures by boat. Coast Guards from countries in the region, including the United States, the Bahamas, Turks and Caicos and Jamaica, have also reported a growing number of boats originating from Haiti being intercepted at sea.
On Thursday, American and Bahamian officials announced the suspension of a search for a missing boat with an estimated 60 migrants bound for Florida. It was believed to have departed on July 4 from a collection of islands in the Bahamas that is a popular jumping-off point for Haitian migrants trying to reach the United States.
In June, a group of 117 migrants from Haiti arrived off Key West, Fla., in a sailboat, according to the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office.
Overall, maritime migration of Haitians — as well as Cubans fleeing for financial and political reasons — to the United States has reached its highest levels since the 1990s, according to numbers complied by the Migration Policy Institute , a nonpartisan research organization based in Washington.
It estimated that 7,000 Haitians and 6,000 Cubans were intercepted at sea by United States officials during the 2022 fiscal year, and that initial data showed similar trends for the 2023 fiscal year.

U nited States intelligence agencies say Russia could send advanced anti-ship missiles to Yemen’s Houthis in retaliation for Washington’s support for Ukraine, The Wall Street Journal reported on Friday, citing US officials.
According to the newspaper, Washington is working behind the scenes to stop the arms transfer.
Meanwhile, US Central Command chief Erik Kurilla was said to warn that US-led operations were “failing” to prevent Houthi attacks on the Red Sea. In a classified letter to US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, Kurilla reportedly called for potentially stronger military action and a “whole of government” approach that would step up diplomatic and economic pressure on the Houthis.
“Many people found the tone of the memo to be a bit shocking,” The Journal quoted a defense official as saying. According to the official, Kurilla’s point was that “US service members will die if we continue going this way.”
The US and other nations, notably Britain, have carried out extensive airstrikes on Houthi targets in Yemen in an effort to forestall the Iran-backed rebels’ attacks on merchant ships in the Red Sea.
Middle East Eye reported in June that Saudi Arabia had talked Russia out of providing anti-ship cruise missiles to the Houthis. However, US intelligence services assess that Moscow is renewing its push to arm the Houthis after the White House approved Kyiv’s use of US-made weapons to strike targets inside Russia, the Journal said, adding that the nature of the intelligence was unclear.
The newspaper said the White House is making a diplomatic push through a third country to dissuade Russia from the arms transfer.
According to the Journal, US officials have seen recent indications that Russian President Vladimir Putin was still considering arming the Houthis.
Putin said in June that the White House’s policy toward Ukraine, which Russia invaded in 2022, could drive Moscow to arm US adversaries.
“The response can be asymmetrical, and we will think about that,” Putin told reporters at an international economic forum in St. Petersburg.
Two US officials told The Journal that Russia has not transferred any missiles to the Houthis, but that representatives of the Yemeni rebels were seen in Moscow. The newspaper cited officials as saying that an arms transfer from Russia to Yemen could make use of Iranian smuggling routes .
Iran currently supplies much of the Houthis’ munitions. A Houthi-launched drone that struck Tel Aviv on Friday — killing one person and injuring several others — was Iranian-made, the Israel Defense Force said.
One analyst told The Journal that munitions supplied by Russia “would represent a qualitative leap” in the Houthis’ capabilities.
Hundreds of Houthi missiles, missile launchers and attack drones, as well as dozens of storage facilities and several command centers, air defense systems, radars and helicopters, representing “a significant amount of Houthi capability,” have been destroyed in US-led strikes, a defense official said.
According to The Journal, the White House’s authorization for military action against the Houthis extends to missiles and drones about to be launched. The newspaper said the US military have also taken other limited steps, including seven planned military operations.
Amid Kurilla’s call for a more comprehensive strategy against the Houthis, the Journal cited an administration official as saying that some measures had already been taken to complement the military operations. The Journal also cited an administration official as saying that Washington had requested US Central Command to compile a broader list of targets, including specific Houthi members.
Still, some US officials who spoke to the newspaper criticized Washington’s policy in the Red Sea.
“If you tell the military to re-establish freedom of navigation and then you tell them to only be defensive, it isn’t going to work,” one official was quoted as saying. “It is all about protecting ships without affecting the root cause.”
The Iran-backed Houthis have targeted ships in the Red Sea since November, saying they are doing so in solidarity with the Palestinians in Gaza amid the Israel-Hamas war there. The war was sparked on October 7, when the Palestinian terror group led a thousands-strong attack on southern Israel that left nearly 1,200 people dead and saw 251 taken hostage.
Houthi attacks have harmed at least 30 merchant ships — some with no connection to Israel, the US or Britain — and sunk two.
