Tiwal 3R

Sailing World Magazine’s  annual Boat of the Year tests are conducted in Annapolis, Maryland, following the US Sailboat Show. With independent judges exhaustively inspecting the boats on land and putting them through their paces on the water, this year’s fleet of new performance-sailing boats spanned from small dinghies to high-tech bluewater catamarans. Here’s the best of the best from our  2023 Boat of the Year nominees »

  • Praise for: Performance, comfort, portability

The surest way to grow sailing is to make it easy to get on the water with minimal hassle on a boat that is exhilarating to sail—and that’s exactly what the inflatable and powered-up Tiwal 3R does. Thousands of Tiwal fanatics around the world can’t be wrong; they love their zippy little crafts, and the Tiwal community has grown ever larger since its young French innovators launched the first model a decade ago. The Tiwal 3R is the continuing evolution of a great idea—with even better execution. Tiwal boats keep getting better, and this one is its best yet.

The “R” is for Race, and that’s because after two years of playing and adventure racing on the early-edition Tiwal 3s, keener owners started asking for more. But the engineering required to make Tiwal’s high-pressure inflatable hull and aluminum frame take on greater rig and structural loads that had them stumped for nearly two years, says Emmanuel Bertrand. They kept breaking it until they got it right.

At 10 feet and 121 pounds fully rigged, the magic of the Tiwal 3R is its portability, which would explain why the company says it sells so many in urban areas around the world. The sail, hull, blades, five-part composite spar and boom, and aluminum frame pack into two 5-foot duffel bags. To put it all together at whatever water’s edge takes about 30 minutes; it’s mere minutes if the boat is coming off the car top already pumped and assembled.

Tiwal 3R

The PVC hull construction is identical to all other Tiwals, but the design for the 3R is a big improvement, with a more pronounced V-shape, a bit more rocker, and a reinforcement plate on the bottom near the transom, which gives it stiffness and a cleaner exit. “It’s difficult to get a hard corner on inflatables,” Stewart says, “so that’s a great solution to give it a nice sharp edge and a cleaner break so the water isn’t bubbling up over the back.”

When I got my weight in the right spot, the boat just took off. It’s quicker than quick. —Chuck Allen

The gust-responsive rig and big sail, built with North Sails racing cloth, is what takes the boat a big step from the recreational sailor’s Tiwal 3 to the racing sailor’s 3R, Powlison says. “This is the same size sail as a Laser, 77 square feet, which is a lot of power. When you get the vang set right, it does make a big difference. It is an effective control that they got right.”

Powlison’s only desire was to be able to get the sail controls to run farther back on the rack, accepting, however, that this would unnecessarily complicate the setup.

Tiwal 3R

Allen, who’s been a Tiwal fan since the original, is impressed once again. “You definitely get a lot more performance out of this thing,” he says after sailing the boat in 10 to 15 knots and flat water. “I got hit with a puff and was like, dang! This thing’s got some wheels. It’s much faster and stiffer. I’m 170 pounds and was able to stay out on the rack the entire time, even when it got light.”

Stewart’s assessment of the 3R is that it’s built for a slightly more advanced sailor. “This thing is higher tech, with a lot more control lines, so it’s a bit more boat to handle. That being said, I’m a big guy (the manufacturer’s stated maximum load on the wing is 242 pounds), and I was never sitting in water, so it will accommodate a wide range of people.”

Getting the purchase systems for the 4-to-1 cunningham and the two-part vang (all of which are doubled-ended) into the mast collar hardware was an engineering exercise, says creator Marion Excoffon. But the end result is a system of color-coded lines and color-matched Harken blocks that work effectively and smoothly to depower the sail. Once the control systems are assembled, they don’t need to be rerun. When rigging, simply slide the mast into the collar, hook up the mainsheet, attach the rudder, and cast off for a fast and sporty adventure.

Tiwal 3R

“Every time I got a little puff, the boat zipped right along,” Allen says. “The foils are stiff and shaped well, so the boat goes upwind really nicely. The bow was stiff and wasn’t flopping in the chop. But the best part was reaching around in the big puffs, sitting at the back corner of the rack, with the boat just skimming. When I got my weight in the right spot, the boat just took off. It’s quicker than quick.”

How to Choose an Inflatable Dinghy

  • By Eleanor Merrill
  • Updated: January 9, 2020

inflatables

Shopping for a tender is a little like shopping for a car. The options are seemingly endless, and it’s not so much about finding one dinghy that checks every box as it is about finding a dinghy that best fits the type of cruising you plan to do. As Defender’s Stephen Lance puts it, “In my 30-plus years of designing, building, selling, repairing, buying, cutting up and examining inflatable boats, there is only one golden rule: There is no ‘perfect inflatable boat’ for the cruising sailor.” Lance notes that the product landscape is constantly changing, and buyers have to decide which trade-offs are most acceptable for their use.

Inflatable dinghies come in three overarching categories: those with rigid bottoms, those with air floors, and — a sort of hybrid between the two — dinghies with jointed or slatted bottoms. We’ll break down the strengths and weaknesses of each of these options.

Pros and Cons of Air-Floor Dinghies

inflatable

A dinghy with a high-pressure air floor is a good choice if you plan to roll it up and stow it regularly, and don’t have a lot of space to do it. It has a floor chamber that can be inflated with a hand pump with a pressure gauge (for those who want a 15-minute aerobic workout), or an electric pump that plugs into 12- or 110-volt power. Air-floor dinghies are among the lightest-weight options available, and can be much easier to assemble on board than fitting the slats into a wood floor.

In most models, an inflated keel tube that runs down the centerline helps give the hull a V shape for better tracking. Air-floor dinghies might be especially attractive to bluewater cruisers because they can be easily stored below, where they won’t create windage or be vulnerable to waves breaking over the deck.

It should be noted, though, that proper inflation is key, which might mean pumping in extra air on cool mornings and watching out for overinflation in hot weather. Air floors are not as durable as their solid counterparts, so they might not be the best choice if you plan to frequently haul heavy or sharp-cornered gear. A puncture in an air floor can be difficult to repair, so if you’re headed for remote anchorages, it’s not a bad idea to carry a replacement floor as a spare.

Roll-Up, Slatted and Paneled Floors

inflatable

A compromise between an inflatable floor and a rigid, fiberglass bottom is one made of wood, aluminum or plastic slats that are either hinged to roll up or come apart in separate panels.

Dinghies with these floor styles are typically nonplaning, don’t tow or track particularly well, and have limited range, but they can fit the bill if you’re just putting around a mooring field. They can also be among the least-expensive inflatable dinghies. Jointed slats are more straightforward to rig and derig because you don’t remove the floor when rolling up the boat. Meanwhile, setting up a plywood-panel dinghy can be time- and labor-intensive, not to mention finicky, and a flat surface is recommended. For this reason, paneled floors are probably best-suited for cruisers who need only to stow and then relaunch their dinghy occasionally. Despite these challenges, former CW senior editor and Practical Sailor editor Darrell Nicholson notes, “The assembly hassles of a plywood floor are offset by having something very durable that I can fix anywhere myself.”

When to Choose a Rigid-Bottom Dinghy

inflatable

Hard-bottomed inflatables have higher carrying capacities and behave much better as boats, but they are heavier and more expensive than the alternatives. Stowing a rigid-bottomed inflatable can be a challenge because you’ll need davits or foredeck space to lash it down. Some RIBs have a hinged transom that, while less efficient with an outboard, allows the dinghy to lie almost flat when deflated.

When in use, a rigid bottom is likely to be more durable and better able to handle being pulled onto the beach than an inflated floor, and the extra weight and V-shaped hull help the dinghy track better when being towed. Within the RIB category, fiberglass bottoms are the most common, making dinghies durable but heavy. Aluminum bottoms are much lighter but more expensive and susceptible to corrosion.

RIBs can be made with a single or double floor. A single-floor RIB weighs and costs less, but the floor follows the V shape of the hull, making it a bit less stable underfoot. A double-floor RIB has a flat deck, which makes it a more stable and comfortable platform. The watertight air chamber between the deck and hull also provides some extra buoyancy, and as an added bonus, many double-floor RIBs have a locker in the bow to store an anchor or other gear.

Of all the inflatable dinghies, double-floor RIBs have the least overall flex, making them the most efficient design. They can be paired with a more powerful outboard and are an ideal choice if you plan to use your dinghy for adventures farther afield.

Notable Features of Inflatable Dinghies

Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and chlorosulfonated polyethylene synthetic rubber (commonly known as CSM, or its trademark name, Hypalon) are the two most widely available fabrics for a dinghy’s inflatable pontoons. PVC seams are thermomolded, an automated process that creates a bond that is stronger than the fabric itself. Hypalon seams, on the other hand, must be hand-glued, which is part of the reason why Hypalon inflatables are more expensive than those made of PVC.

West Marine’s Tim Mize notes: “Hypalon is more resistant to damage from UV rays, so if you’re planning to cruise the tropics, it’s the fabric of choice. New England sailors, on the other hand, can save a little money with PVC.”

No matter what fabric you choose, protecting the pontoons with a spray-and-wipe UV protectant or a set of canvas covers (see “Making Dinghy Chaps,” March 2017 ) can help block the sun’s damaging rays, extending the dinghy’s life. That said, Nic Stark of Annapolis Inflatables points out, “The best first step toward a long life is keeping the boat and tube clean; dirt, salt and sun do the most damage.” Stark adds that covering the boat when not in use also helps.

If you’ll be cruising locations with rough conditions and/or prefer a drier ride, look for tubes with larger diameters. Other features to seek out are handholds placed within easy reach of both driver and passengers, as well as substantial rubbing strakes to protect the pontoons from barnacle-encrusted dock pilings.

Oar design and storage should also be considered; oars low inside the boat are much less likely to go flying than those mounted on top of the tubes. Look hard at where the fuel tank for the outboard will go, and make sure there’s a way to secure it underway.

Good towing-bridle attachment points are critical — if you plan to tow your dinghy. Likewise, if you’re going to hoist it on davits or a halyard, strong D-rings or welded loops will be necessary.

A dink backed by an extended warranty and wide dealer network will cost a bit more, but the ability to find spare parts, make repairs and have it serviced in your intended cruising area is likely a worthwhile trade-off. Read the fine print on your warranty because some can be voided by DIY repairs.

Choosing and Outboard for Your Dinghy

The outboard you choose will depend on how much exploring you want to do, how many people you typically carry, how much gear you’ll need to tote around and, of course, the maximum rating for the dinghy itself.

If you need only to get to shore and back from the mooring and getting on plane is no concern, a 3- to 5-horsepower motor might do the trick. If you’d like to use the inflatable for bigger adventures — or to haul more provisions, gear and fuel — a rigid dinghy with a more powerful outboard will make more sense for you.

On matching the right outboard to your dinghy, CW Boat of the Year judge Ed Sherman notes, “There’s an important difference between the teeth-rattling maximum-horsepower rating stamped on the transom and the more-reasonable horsepower size that the manufacturers usually recommend.” Check the thickness of the dinghy’s transom to make sure your outboard will attach properly.

When it comes down to it, there is no one tender that does it all. The one you choose will depend on the type of cruising you have planned and what kind of space is available for storage. If you plan to tow your dinghy while sailing short, coastal hops, and have plenty of foredeck space or davits, a rigid-bottomed inflatable can’t be beat. But if you’re doing serious offshore passages and/or are on a smaller boat, a stowable tender will be a better fit.

Best portable sailing dinghies for under £5k

  • Katy Stickland
  • July 29, 2020

We put six portable sailing dinghies under £5,000 to the test to see which one is the best all-rounder and really deserves a place on your boat

Testing inflatable sailing dinghies at Lymington

Six inflatable sailing dinghies were tested by the team

Lightweight fabrics and drop-stitch construction enabling rigid high pressure structures are a far cry from the ubiquitous inflatable rubber tender.

For
all it’s pack-down convenience, these old-school bulbous craft were never easy to row, and mostly can’t be sailed.

This led to a heavy reliance on outboards, and with it, the loss a peaceful means of exploring new harbours.

With a sail and reasonable rowing abilities, however, you can get around without a noisy engine, occupy family for hours on end, and sail up creeks that a yacht could never explore.

Sailing sailing dinghies in Lymington

We tested the boats which could double up as portable tenders and capable sailing dinghies

We wanted to try out portable sailing dinghies that offered the best of both worlds – genuinely portable tenders that also double up as capable sailing dinghies.

The Seal, a new product, most closely resembles the once popular Tinker Tramp.

The two Dinghy Go dinghies are the closest to conventional tenders, but with rigid inflatable floors, centreboard casings and stayless rigs.

The Seahopper will delight traditionalists and fans of hard tenders, while folding completely flat.

The two wildcards were the MiniCat Guppy and the Tiwal 2, both
of which offer plenty of fun afloat and could double as tenders if needed.

How we tested the portable sailing dinghies

We judged the six dinghies against a few
key factors.

First we measured the size of the bags in which the dinghies and
all their kit were stowed, and weighed each bag.

This gave us a fair idea of how realistically portable each tender is and how much space it might take up on board.

We then assembled each boat and timed how long it took from packed to ready.

Weighing the bags the dinghies came in

The dinghies were weighed to discover how portable they really were

Whilst assembly will always get quicker with practice, some manufacturers sent representatives for the test, easing our learning process.

Once on the water, both Toby Heppell and Theo Stocker took the sailing dinghies out for
a spin, sailing the boats upwind and downwind.

They also rowed and motored those that were equipped to
do so (the MiniCat and the Tiwal
were not equipped with rowlocks or an outboard bracket).

We measured
rough speed via GPS to give us an idea
of what speeds could be achieved in the sailing dinghies.

The weather during our test was a little variable with winds between 7-13 knots and minimal wave state.

A traditional boat is priceless to anglers and boaters, but it comes with the problem of finding suitable storage and trailer. This translates to increased costs that might not be too appealing for some intending boaters.

Thankfully, an inflatable dinghy offers all the functions of a traditional boat plus convenience, high performance, ease of use, and safety. You don’t need a trailer to lug most inflatables from place to place. And you definitely don’t need dock rentals or spend extra money on storage for these boats.

However, choosing the best inflatable dinghy is usually not a walk in the park, particularly if it is your first time doing so. For this reason, we’ve reviewed the top 5 options available on the market to ease your buying decision. We’ve also included a detailed guide to help select the best type that suits your purpose.

Let’s kick things off with a boat that combines near-perfect performance with portability. From Newport Vessels comes Dana, a special 8-feet inflatable sport tender dinghy boat with large tubes that resembles twin rockets. It seats up to three passengers and can take up to 1,067 lbs.

At this point, most people would have made up their minds about which boat is the best inflatable dinghy. While it is okay to eye one or a couple of these options, we’ll suggest that you hold off choosing for a little while until you know what to look for when choosing an inflatable dinghy.

But first, let’s see some of the advantages of buying an inflatable dinghy instead of other traditional boats.

Why You Should Buy an Inflatable Dinghy

Several types of inflatable boats are used for different purposes. This ranges from motorized inflatable pontoon boats to inflatable sport boats to rigid inflatable boats, and others. These boats have become popular for several reasons, including:

Portability

Portability is perhaps the biggest reason to invest in an inflatable dinghy. Most types can be deflated and rolled up or folded easily. Storing them doesn’t require a lot of space. You can keep them safe in your garage (off the floor). That means zero winter storage fees and absolutely no need for slip rentals. And since you can transport them in the trunk of your car, there is no need for trailers.

Of course, larger types are heavier and difficult to lug from one place to another, but they don’t require a trailer to move them.

Wait, what?

How is a “balloon” on water durable?

Inflatable dinghies are not mere balloons or rubber floating on water. Modern constructions use polyvinyl chloride (PVC) fabrics or Hypalon (a nylon neoprene-coated material) to build highly durable boats that can withstand harsh conditions and hazards, including abrasion, UV rays, and extreme temperatures.

You don’t have to worry about frequent leaks because the seams of modern inflatable dinghies are heat-welded. Purchasing an inflatable dinghy is a wise investment if you enjoy fishing or some other water activities because the boat is designed to last for several seasons.

Canoes, kayaks , and other boats in the same class do not provide the type of stability as inflatable dinghies. It is a lot safer to stand in inflatables and maneuver the boats even at high speeds, especially if you buy one with a V-shaped keel and a hard floor. If you buy a larger model, you can even use it in the ocean’s open waters.

Versatility

Many other boats are built to suit only one application. But inflatable dinghies are designed to be used under various conditions in a wide range of waterways and can be used in saltwater and freshwater.

Many inflatables also come with optional accessories, including seating, fishing rod holders, canopies, and storage.

Choosing the Best Inflatable Dinghy – Buying Guide

inflatable sailboat dinghy

Here’s a quick tip when it comes to buying an inflatable that will serve you for several years: always look beyond the brand name and price tag.

Yes! Selecting a good-quality inflatable dinghy is all about choosing one with the right features for your purpose. It doesn’t matter how expensive a boat is; if it doesn’t suit your purpose and where you live or where you’ll be using it, you shouldn’t buy it.

Before you purchase a boat, we suggest that you take some time and give serious thoughts to the following.

Inflatables come in different sizes, and size can significantly affect performance. Choosing a size depends a lot on how you intend to use the boat. What size of motor do you want to use? How many passengers do you expect onboard on average? You should also consider the amount of gear you usually bring along and the normal conditions you expect to encounter. All these factors can impact the performance of a boat.

Generally, inflatables over 10 feet long usually offer a greater level of control. They are less likely to rock during strong wind currents and are a lot easier to plane. Of course, if you do not need that much space, there’s no need to buy a 10-feet long boat or more. But whatever you do, keep in mind that overloading your dinghy will definitely reduce its performance, regardless of the size.

Think about the pros and cons of flooring available in the inflatable before you buy it. Why is this important? The floor of a boat can affect its stability, speed, weight, and even performance. As you go through this section, consider where you want to use the dinghy – on choppy waters, running river, or flat water?

The four types of floors available in inflatable dinghies include:

  • Slat Floors

Slat floors, also known as roll-up floors, are the most basic floors you will encounter in inflatable boats. Slat floors are made from materials such as plywood or aluminum and are easy to assemble. Storing them is as easy and rolling them up and stowing away.

If you want a simple boat that is perfect for short trips, consider one with roll-up floors such as a roll-up inflatable dinghy. They are easy to deflate, roll up, and store. They require only a small space for storage and are not expensive.

However, because the floors are not rigid, it can be difficult to stand on them. Another major downside of slat floors is that they can damage the boat’s fabric if they get broken. And since these types of dinghies don’t come with a keel, performance on the water is limited. They are most suited to small water bodies with flat water.

Consider getting another type of dinghy if you want to ride in choppy waters of the open ocean. But if you prefer a slat floor inflatable dinghy, make sure to purchase one with the slat floors close together as they are more stable than those with slats that are further apart.

  • Hard Floors

Inflatables with hard floors offer more stability and rigidity and slat floor types. The floors are also made from wood or aluminum and usually come with a V-shaped keel for added rigidity. This combination allows the boat to get on a plane easily. It also improves maneuverability and overall performance on choppy waters.

Hard floor inflatables are rather stable, making them versatile as they can be used as dive boats, yacht tenders, and fishing boats.

Expect to pay more hard floored boats such as the Rigid Hull Inflatable dinghies (RHIs). Setting them up will also take a long time compared to roll-up inflatable dinghies that take less time to inflate and deflate. These boats are quite heavy, so carrying them from land to water is a bit difficult. As you probably already figure out, storing these dinghies requires considerable space because they are not as portable as other options.

Consider getting an inflatable with a hard floor if you have ample space to store them, and you don’t mind spending some time assembling the boat when you need to use it. After all, that’s a small price to pay if you want a boat that will cut through choppy waters like a hot knife slices through butter!

Air floors, also known as air deck, are separate flat tubes that inflate like the rest of the dinghy. They are made from tough PVC materials and are rigid enough to stand or even jump on, but weigh less than hard floors.

Inflatable dinghies with air floors usually have keels, and this gives them superior maneuverability, and their lightweight improves their speed. The floors are comfortable for kneeling and sitting.

Air floor boats are portable and faster to assemble than hard floor boats. They also don’t require much storage space.

However, these boats don’t come cheap. Expect to spend top dollar for a good-quality air floor inflatable dinghy. But the major downside is not the price tag. Air floor boats are prone to punctures. This is probably not the best choice if you want to mount real seats or a fish finder on your boat.

Pro tip: One way to minimize piercing through the boat is to lay a piece of carpet or cut-to-shape vinyl on the floor. This is particularly helpful if you plan to carry things around in your boat or use it for fishing.

Another disadvantage of air floor boats is their weight. These boats are particularly lightweight because the floor is filled with air. While that’s a good thing, it makes them unsuitable for rough waters. Lightweight is not an advantage when it comes to stability on the water. Consider getting a heavier boat if you want more stability, especially in rough waters.

  • Self-Bailing Floors

The floors in regular boats are made with sealed tubes. If water gets into the boat, it remains there until it is scooped out manually. That’s the disadvantage of non-bailing standard floors.

The solution? Self-bailing floors!

These types of floors have holes in the sides that let water out of the boat. If you are mostly using an inflatable in situations, such as white-water rafting, where lots of water can enter the cockpit, it can be extremely helpful to buy a boat with a self-bailing floor.

Boat Fabric

The type of fabric used to make a boat determines its durability and quality. The popular options when it comes to materials for inflatables are PVC and Hypalon. Both choices are durable, but with peculiarities.

PVC fabrics are synthetic plastic polymers. That means boats with these fabric types are lightweight, portable, and affordable (since the material is less expensive than the nylon-coated Hypalon). Repairing a boat made from PVC fabric is extremely easy – a tear can be glued or thermo-bonded.

However, PVC boats are not suitable for tropical locations. Excessive heat and humidity can easily damage the plastic material or harden the fabric if used under sunlight for too long. These boats have a short life circle because PVC fabrics cannot withstand abrasion for too long.

On the other hand, boats made from Hypalon can resist ultraviolet rays, extreme temperatures, abrasion, and mechanical wear and tear. This is because the material is a synthetic rubber. Repairing Hypalon fabric can be done easily by applying a patch. Overall, these boats will last longer because the material is more durable.

However, Hypalon is expensive, and as expected, the cost of an inflatable dinghy with Hypalon fabric won’t come cheap. The color can fade when left under the sun for too long.

If you live in the tropics or intend to use a boat that will not harden by being under sunlight for long hours, your best bet would be to purchase a boat made with Hypalon fabric. On the flip side, if you live in colder regions and don’t intend to be on the water for too long during sunny days, a PVC boat might suit you just fine.

When it comes to hull type, the best inflatable dinghy for you will depend on the activity you intend to use the boat for. Hull types include:

A boat with a flat hull doesn’t come with a keel, which means it won’t provide adequate stability. Directing and maneuvering this type of boat can be difficult. Generally, flat hull boats don’t reach high speeds and will not get on planes.

So, what are they good for? Consider getting a flat hull boat if all you do is going on short trips or you want a boat that will move slowly while you fish for a few hours.

A V hull boat usually comes with an inflatable keel. They are perfect for cutting through water as they can get on planes at high speeds. They offer great stability and maneuverability than flat hull types, and as you’ll expect, they are a bit more expensive, too. This boat might be just what you want if you are looking for the best inflatable dinghy that will serve as a tender during wildlife, fishing, or diving activities.

  • Deep-V Hull

Deep-V hulls are common features in rigid inflatable dinghies and are quite pricey. Boats with deep-v hulls have enhanced stability, increased speed, and give more control. But because they sail higher on water due to their hull design, they can rock in the wind and even tilt.

Availability of OEM Accessories

Although you can buy a new boat after a while, wouldn’t it be better if you can save costs by simply upgrading? Adding additional storage, a canopy, or even adding a few seats might be all you need instead of buying an entirely new boat.

But you can’t upgrade easily if your boat doesn’t have readily available OEM accessories or aftermarket parts. For this reason, take some time to look around for available accessories for the inflatable dinghy you intend to purchase.

Besides, it will be helpful if the boat you choose includes accessories such as waterproof carry bags , seat cushions, paddles, and other items.

Lastly, consider buying a boat from a manufacturer with a long-term warranty. Even if you choose the best inflatable dinghy made from durable materials, you cannot completely rule out accidental damages, so keep an eye out for a solid warranty.

Bottom Line: What is the Best Inflatable Dinghy?

As you would have deduced by now, there is no one-size-fits-all when it comes to choosing the best inflatable dinghy. What works for one person might not be suitable for another because these boats are versatile and can be used for more than one purpose.

A fisherman might not choose the same type of inflatable boat as someone who wants a sport boat. Waterways and conditions can also affect individual choice.

In a nutshell, the best inflatable dinghy is that which suits your purpose, location, and preferences. And we’re sure one or more of the options in this guide will meet your needs.

Deluxify Your Inflatable Dinghy Sail Kit or Sailboat Order
This item upgrades a sail kit or complete inflatable sailboat that you are buying today. Put this item in your shopping cart and it will

(a) switch your mast to heavy duty

(b) switch your sail to the larger 55 S.F. size (nylon) and add the necessary spar extension to do that

And of course, the Super Deluxe includes the bag, sail size upgrade, Quick Release leeboard mounts, mast upgrade and spar extension that make up the Deluxe Package.
Sea Eagle 465FT with Sail Kit - Pro Package latest model
This item is just like (see description there) except instead of the Deluxe Package of accessories this is the Pro Package: 2 longer paddles, 2 tall-back non-inflatable seats, 2 stow bags, foot pump and kayak carry bag. Intex Mariner 4 with Our Sail Rig - Complete Inflatable Sailboat
The Intex Mariner 4 is the boat to get if you plan to sail with 3 or 4 people and a picnic lunch. Almost 11 feet long (130") and almost 5 feet wide (57"), with a solid roll-up floor. The cockpit is much larger than a Sevylor 11 footer, despite similar over-all dimensions, because the air chambers are smaller. Plus, the solid floor enhances the feeling of space because the floor stays relatively flat under your foot or bottom. This is an extremely stable, rigid, substantial-feeling boat. Under the floor is an inflatable spine running the length of the boat that gives the hull a "V" shape under the water, which helps it track well. The disadvantage of this boat is weight: The floor is 30 lbs and the boat is 36 lbs, so together they are about 67 lbs. (Other websites may disagree, but we have weighed it!) Fortunately, it's easy to remove and install the floor by deflating one main air chamber, so when we don't have help, we just separate the floor and the boat into two portable 30-something-pound packages. (FAQ: Can boat be used without floor? Answer: No). If you can't afford our Saturn or Baltic model but want a boat for group sailing with room for the cooler, this is the one. Comes with 45 s.f. nylon sail standard. This same sail rig will fit lighter boats such as the Intex Seahawk II so for an extra $100 - $200 you could give yourself a lighter-weight second hull as an accessory -- a different sailboat to take when traveling light. Accessories to consider: (a) Get our bellows foot pump or one of our electrics that run off the car cigarette lighter. (b) Sail options. Upgrade to 55 S.F. sail for more speed on days with weak winds. Upgrade to custom dacron sail in either 45 or 55 S.F. size and pick your colors. (Photo shows a custom dacron sail in 55 S.F. size.) (c) Heavy duty mast. (d) Carry bag for the rig. Either the standard bag just big enough for the sail rig or our new larger, heavy-duty bag -- same $39 price on either. (e) Floating waterproof cellphone case. With optional motor mount, can take up to 3 HP motor weighing up to 40 lbs. Maximum load in the boat is 880 lbs. If you already have the Mariner, and just want the sail kit, buy item 2001. Note: Mariner uses a 52-inch front crossbar that does not fit in bag, unless you order snap-apart option. To sail with motor mount installed, add clamp set.

Pandemic note: This boat has become hard to get and its price has become volatile. We may contact you saying we will have to pay more for the boat and offering you the option to reimburse us or cancel the order.

Outside Massachusetts tax note: Sales tax of your state will be charged in a separate manual transaction after the order is entered.
Hydro-Dynamic Stabilizer Floats & Arms only (slide into crossbar of a sail or rowing kit)
Streamlined rigid pontoons on telescoping arms that can be added to most of our sail rigs and rowing rigs to help prevent capsizing. This is an accessory for any sail kit or rowing rig from us or Spring Creek that has a crossbar these can slide into. See for a complete stabilizer including crossbar and gunwale clamps.

To upgrade your order to this item in the "square post" version add . The square post version is a bit more costly, but it's worth it: More convenient to do the up-down adjustment of the floats with the square-post version and the square posts automatically align the floats to point straight ahead.

Color choices: (Specify color choice in comments section of checkout page). Best to give first choice and second choice as availability varies. Inflatable stabilizer floats and arms -white
Inflatable stabilizer floats with float arms that slide into the front crossbar of any of our sail kits.

Don't have a pump? We have a good one for a low price: But inflation by mouth also works well-- about 8 puffs.

Combine this with a for a complete stabilizer system if you don't have a sail kit.

Rugged, yet more portable than our other stabilizer floats because they deflate. Very puncture resistant and they inflate quickly and easily a few strokes of the pump or puffs by mouth. This item is not designed with the up/down adjustment. This item is just floats and arms for adding to a sail kit, rowing setup, or other product that already has crossbar for them to slide into. For sailing, you generally use floats in all-the-way-up position anyway, so if that's the intended use of your stabilizers, you don't need up/down adjustment. But we can upgrade to a version with up-down adjustment for $20 more. Just put a note in the order comments. Our rigid stabilizer perform better in some respects but are not as portable and compact to store. Free shipping applies if ordered with other things. If ordered alone, we will add $15 shipping when we process the order.

This is our own house-brand product and if a much improved product, in that the floats have thicker skin and 3-point attachment system so they hold their shape better and resist tipping forward or backward.

Customer writes: 'I LOVE IT' Hi Jim! Sailed for the third time on the setup today. Sails GREAT! I LOVE IT! Very lively winds today, 12-16 knots at times. Boat handles great under sail, glad I got the inflatable stabilizers for sailing solo. (The hydrodynamic ones would be great but I needed everything to be RV packable.) \ Thanks, Frank K. Upgrade stabilizer floats from inflatable to hydrodynamic
Add this item to your cart only if you are also buying a sail kit that normally comes with inflatable floats. This item deletes the inflatable floats from your product and adds the hydrodynamic floats (hard plastic streamlined floats with up/down adjustment). It charges you only the difference in price between these two float styles.
Solstice Quest Dinghy Sail Kit with Rudder (no boat)
This is the 45 SF sail kit only. We don't sell the boat but they are widely available in 10' and 12' size from Amazon and other vendors. suitable for either size. The Solstice Quest is a firm and rigid inflatable dinghy with a wider stern than the Mariners or the Hydro-Force. As such, the Solstice Quests are a good choice for the center rudder and tiller instead of the steering-oar steering system (although you can get Mariner and Hydro-Force sail kit from us in a rudder version as well). We recommend center rudder steering for kids and for adults of small stature, and for people who just like the traditional feel of a rudder and tiller. We've made the rudder standard on this boat, instead of steering oar steering. So there is no need for the rudder upgrade. What's included: ,45 SF sail kit with nylon sail, rudder and rudder mount. Everything you need to sail is included except for the boat. However you may want a sail kit bag, you may want to upgrade to the heavy duty mast (more headroom under the boom) and you may want the bigger sail. Dinghy sail kit options, upgrades and accessories page:

The Solstice Quest weighs about 40 lbs without the sail kit, which is a lot less than the weight of the Mariner 3 or 4. So that's a big advantage. Rated for 3 people (2 would be better - get the 12 footer for 3). Motor mount available (uses Navigator motor mount). Sail kit weighs about 38 pounds.

Deluxe package: Solstice Quest Dinghy Sail Kit and Rudder (no boat)
Just like item except we upgrade the mast and sail to the heavy duty mast and larger 55 SF sail, and we add a sail kit bag and a little 12V electric inflator. Inflator will do 95% of the work and then you top off with the foot pump that comes with your boat. Steering is by traditional center rudder.

(Boat not included -- buy from Amazon, West Marine or any of the many vendors now selling it.)

Saturn River Raft & Sail Kit with Rudder Steering
See item 1076 for the full description of this great boat and sail kit, but order here if you prefer to have traditional rudder steering instead of steering-oar steering.

Advantages of steering oars: (1) You'll never have trouble coming about and get stuck pointed directly into the wind with steering oar steering. That occasionally happens in any sailboat with a traditional rudder. (2) The steering oar system is compatible with the motor mount, while the rudder system is not. (3) You can sit centered facing straight ahead with steering oars at your sides, while with a rudder you generally sit to the side and have to twist your neck to look forward.

Advantages of traditional rudder: (1) The traditional rudder requires less arm effort to hold your course in strong winds. (2) It's what most sailors are used to.

The RD365 adapts well to the traditional rudder and it steers well with it. The rudder has a kick-up blade so you can beach the boat and launch from a beach easily.

Not compatible with our tiller-turner system. Not compatible with motor mount.

Standard rudder blade is phenolic just like our standard leeboards. Upgrade of the blade to polycarbonate is

Dinky Cat Inflatable Catamaran -- Lightweight, Quick Set-up

Extremely portable and quick to set up.  And look at that low price!  This is the ideal setup for traveling light and setting up fast.  We take the Saturn TOW290 and put a folding lightweight sail kit on it that unfolds and straps on in a jiffy.   The hull is about 34 lbs. and the sail kit is about 32 lbs. Carries one or two people.  Cockpit floor space is about 2' x 5'.

At this price, you get the hull, a wrap-style carry bag for the deflated hull, hand pump, and complete sail kit with one steering oar, sail, mast, spars, mast step, frame, leeboards and all necessary straps for attaching.  No modification of the hull is required.  No part of the sail kit is longer than 4 feet when folded.  This makes a complete inflatable sailboat, capable of sailing downwind and across the wind, and tacking upwind.

Consider these upgrades:

Second steering oar so you can steer with either hand without shifting the oar to the other side.

Steering balance tuner to allow fine-tuning of the amount of weather helm (= tendency to turn upwind).

Heavy duty, taller mast.

Package of heavy duty mast plus

Carry bag with shoulder strap for folded sail kit.   Everything fits in this 1'x1'x4' bag with room to spare for your lifejacket and the pump!

See more information on these accessories and upgrades (and more) by   When you get there, click the "more info" links to see prices.  (Some options shown not applicable to this boat, but most are).

Bestway Motor mount for Marine Pro and Intex
Bestway motor mount. Fits Marine Pro and Intex boat. (And vice versa -- the Intex Motor Mount will work on the Marine Pro). To use sail kit with motor mount you must also buy "clamps to sail inflatable with motor mount." Some people prefer this over the Intex motor mount, even for Intex Boats, because it is mostly wood and metal with very little plastic, while the Intex motor mount uses a lot of plastic. Conversion Kit - Inflatable Dinghy or Kayak Sail Rig to Canoe (No Floats)
Additional parts you need to use your inflatable dinghy, or U-front kayak, sail rig on your canoe. Maximize your versatility! This item consists of 4 gunwale clamps ($80 value) and a pair of sliding leeboard mount converters ($59 value), plus instructions. You probably also want to order stabilizer floats and arms ( ). This is an upgrade kit for sail kit owners and would not be useful by itself.

You need the sliding leeboard mounts because canoes require the leeboards to be closer to the mast for proper steering balance. The leeboards should be no more than 2 feet behind the mast, for most canoes. Otherwise, your canoe will keep wanting to turn downwind, making it hard to control. What you want is a moderate tendency to turn upwind, which is what you wil have if you get the leeboards closer to the mast but not too close.

Challenger 3 boat plus our sail rig - lightest, most affordable inflatable sailboat
Our most compact and portable sailboat. Low priced, but high quality. Hull is a 9' 8" Intex Challenger 3. Rig is our standard 2042 rig, with 45-square foot nylon sail. Comfortable for 2 adults, or 1 adult and 2 kids. Hull weighs just 19 pounds! Sail kit is 34 lbs. Accepts motor mount sold separately for gas or electric outboard. Oars, pump included. This is a single-ply hull, which means it is softer and less rigid than 3-ply boats like the Hydro-Force, Mariner 3 or 4, Fishman II or any of the Navigator line. Sail kit for Sea Eagle Frameless Fishing Boat 285 fpb Not available
Sail kit for the Sea Eagle Frameless Fishing boat 285 fpb. This sail kit is like our sail kit, with some minor changes to make it suitable for the 285fpb. We included hardware to attach the rear crossbar of the sail kit to the motor mount, so that you can have the motor in place and even a motor if you want. Consider the upgraded version of this kit with taller, adjustable-height mast, instead of this one because it gives you more headroom under the boom. Greater headroom is important if you plan to sit on the swivel seat. The item 2006 kit also includes a bag for the sail kit (item 6007), which this base model sail kit does not.

Sliding leeboard mount converters (Pair)
Alternative to the Steering Balance Tuner. Don't need both. Allows you to adjust position of leeboards on our "Any Kayak", and inflatable boat sail kits (excluding kits for Pakboat, SVX200, Saturn & similar, where mast position is adjustable instead). Does not include leeboard mounts, because those are already part of your sail kit. Following the instructions provided, you will be able to fine-tune your rig for the combination of hull, sail, sailing conditions and preferences you have. Farther forward gives slightly better upwind performance. Farther back (up to a point) gives less drag and less effort on steering oar to hold course going straight ahead. Too far back gives control problems. Adjustable positioning allows you to adapt rig to wider variety of boats, and to your desired handling characteristics. The inflatable rig and the kayak rig work on rigid canoes if you get sliding leeboard mounts and 2 pair of gunwale clamps. (Canoes need the leeboards farther forward than the standard fixed position for kayaks and inflatables). Changing leeboard position with these sliding mounts requires no tools and can be done in a few seconds provided you aren't also trying to sail the boat at the same time. Do on shore or let your passenger do it for you, so you are not distracted from your duties as skipper! Leeboard shaft extensions (pair) for boats with more than 18-inch tube diametemr

Steering Balance Tuner (Read whole description!)
Tune your rig for effortless steering and reduced drag. This accessory lets you move the mast forward, farther from the leeboards, thereby reducing the tendency of the sailboat to turn into the wind. Result? Less effort required from the skipper to hold a straight course, and less drag from the rudder or steering oar so you go faster.

Suitable for use on our dinghy rigs and the kayak rigs with U-shaped front assemblies like the rigs for Saturns and Sea Eagles and on the Any Kayak and Kayakamaran rigs. (If it is unsuitable for your rig, we will warn you before shipping it and let you delete it from your order).

Physically, what is it? This device is a short (13-inch) "bowsprit" that clamps to the middle of your front crossbar and points straight forward. The mast step is then mounted to it, instead of to the front crossbar. You then tune your steering by experimenting with different locations for the mast, a bit farther forward than its normal location.

Sailboats are always designed so that the steering "pulls" a little toward the upwind side. This is called "weather helm." This does a lot of good things for safety and control, but there's a tradeoff -- too much weather helm is a drag, literally and figuratively. Literally because the rudder or steering oar drags more when correcting against the weather helm to hold a straight course, and figuratively because your arm gets tired holding the tiller against the pull (or push) of the weather helm when the wind is strong. Many things affect the degree of weather helm, including the design of the hull, the strength of the wind, the weight distribution in the boat, etc. (That's why we can't make a rig with steering balance that is automatically perfect for any boat.) The biggest factor affecting steering balance is the distance between the leeboards and the the mast. And if the distance between mast and leeboards is set too great, the steering balance flips over into "lee helm" which means the boat is always trying to turn downwind, and that's bad. Small changes in the position of the mast relative to the leeboards (a few inches) make a big difference.

Start by moving the mast just 3 inches forward of the front crossbar, and take a test sail. If you like the steering balance, you are done. If you want even less weather helm, go back to shore and move the mast another 2 inches forward and take another test sail. And so forth. If an experiment results in lee helm, you of course return to shore and move the mast to the rear a bit. Do not attempt to adjust while on the water!

If it is neutral under test conditions, it may become lee helm under different conditions, (different wind conditons, different weight distribution in the boat) making handling unpredictable. Your goal is a moderate amount of weather helm. Do your tests under moderate wind conditions, close to shore. Do your tests with the leeboards angled back, since this affects steering balance and they may swing back during a given excursion even if you prefer them vertical.

If ordered later, shipping is $10 and will be manually put through as a separate charge on your card.

Put a pencil on a table. Push sideways on it at the middle with your left index finger and resist that push with your right index finger, also at the middle. Your left finger is the wind on the sail and your right is the leeboards in the water resisting the sideways force from the wind. Move your left finger forward a bit while holding the position of your right finger unchanged and see how the pencil (the boat) turns downwind. Do the opposite and see how it turns upwind. Your left finger position represents the "center of effort" of the sail, which means the point along the sail at which force ahead of that point and force behind that point are equal. When you move the mast, you are moving that center of effort relative to the "center of lateral resistance." The leeboard position is pretty close to the center of lateral resistance, though your hull shape and your rudder or steering oar will affect its location somewhat.
as an alternative way to get more distance between the leeboards and the mast to accomplish the same goal of reducing weather helm.

Note: Be sure to install washers (provided) under star knobs of u-bolts. Important!
Electric Air Pump - Power Inflator 12V DC works off car cigarette lighter
We tested many inflators before choosing which to sell. This is the quietest one we tested. Plugs into cigarette lighter. Has adaptors for different size valves, or in some cases you will use the valve adapter that comes with your boat in combination with the nozzle on this. In some cases you can use the hose from your manual pump and mate it up with the nozzle on this. Will inflate boats to 95% in about 10 minutes. Final pressurization has to be done by hand or foot pump if you want it really firm, but that's just a few strokes of the pump. Inflates and deflates. Alligator clip adapter shown is not included. Tiller Turner lets you sail sitting centered in the boat with center rudder
The Tiller Turner accessory for a center rudder gets the tiller (the handle that controls the rudder) out of the middle of the boat, so you can sit there. Eliminates need to shift sitting position when you tack. Steering becomes a push-pull motion instead of side-to-side. Tiller is moved to one side, where you can hold it with your arm resting on the side tube of your inflatable. Must be ordering the rudder ( or or ) at the same time to purchase this item. (Note: This item is only applicable if you are getting a center rudder. T-Front Kayak Sail Rig - Open sides -- for RazorLite, Travel Canoe, and many others
Sail rig for inflatable kayaks and canoes with good rigidity. The front assembly is "T" configuration, instead of a "U," so, yes, it obstructs the front of the cockpit a little, but it leaves most of the side tubes completely unencumbered by metal -- great for putting your feet up on the sides or draping your legs over the sides, boarding from the water, and ease of getting in and out for passengers.

Item 2021 rig on Sea Eagle 420X kayak.
Intex Mariner 3 with our Sail Rig - Complete10' sailboat
Nice stiff hull, with a wave-skimming upturn at bow and stern. Unlike the current Sea Hawk and Challenger series from Intex, this boat has a thicker, reinforced skin that allows it to take a little more air pressure without stretching, and that's the secret to its rigidity. With solid slat roll-up floor and inflatable keel. Weight is about 65 pounds. If you want the same size and shape boat with inflatable floor and much less weight (34 pounds) order the Hydro-Force Marine Pro ( or ). Standard sail is the 45 SF nylon sail -- see and let us know your pick. For deluxe package see . To sail with motor mount installed, add clamp set. Weight capacity 790 lbs. 3 person. Motor mount is . "Took mine out on a day there was very little wind and it still went. Slowly but still fun. Took it out just now in 10+ mph wind and I was zipping along. Super fun. I'm going to sail down the East River (NYC) this or next weekend! :)" -- Customer comment on SalboatsToGo Seahawk II sailing video on Youtube(July 2011) See video (click arrow): Note to customers in Europe and perhaps other countries: It will probably work out best for you to purchase the Mariner 3 online from a seller in or near your country and then just purchase the sail kit and other accessories from us. Boat is now green.

This includes two swivel seats, one seat pedestal (pedestal use is optional and may not be too practical when sailing), two oars, Scotty bases for fishing poles, carry bag for boat, foot pump, motor mount. Sailing with motor is no problem with this boat. This is a comfortable, stable boat that is fun to sail. Weight capacity rating over 600 pounds. Size is 12'4" x 4'6" inflated. Weight of boat is 75 lbs. Sail kit is about 35 lbs.

We think they should have called this the "Roll Cat" because putting it away is just a matter of taking off seats, sail kit, oarlock pivots and motor mount and rolling it up, metal benches and all! Pontoons are really rugged "crocodile skin" PVC you can pound on with the sharp end of a claw hammer. Sailing performance is very nice and real comfortable. See description of for suggested upgrades.

Customer comment: 'Marvelous Invention' "Jim, I took the Cheyenne II [formerly Navigator II ] for its first sail on Lake Wyola in Shutesbury ma. The wind was light and the double steering oars served as rowing oars when needed. Got to try your dancing sailboat maneuver by raising both steering oars. I admired;1- the cleverness of using the clamp for the leeboard mounts as the clamp to lock the side bar extension,2 The shock corded boom and gaff kept inside the sail sleeve , the high quality of all the parts, even the web straps and buckles. I learned something not obvious in the instructions, that the cheyenne II air valves can be locked open by depressing and turning the center pin, not required for inflating with an electric pump, but makes deflating and rolling up the hull quick and easy. I hope you have gotten time to use your marvelous invention this summer. The weather has been so oppressive. Looks like I will be selling/donating my Sunfish! I am looking forward to taking this boat to Cape beaches." Ted L. Amherst MA "

Installation video showing center-rudder version of this sail kit:

Center rudder for inflatable dinghy sail rigs, substitute for side steering oar
Add this item to delete the steering oar system (tiller on the side) from one of our sail kits or complete inflatable sailboats, and substitute instead a traditional center rudder and tiller. This is a substitution option, so you have to have a sail kit or sailboat in your order. [See for item by itself, not as a substitution.]

We prefer the steering oar on the side, generally. It gives more control and allows you to sit centered, lean against the rear air chamber, and have the tiller at your side, right where your hand would naturally be. But for kids and some small adults you may find the center rudder more comfortable and convenient. Traditionalists may prefer it also. The rudder requires less arm effort than steering oar steering in a strong wind.

Center rudder steering works particularly well on the Navigator III 400, Solstice Quest and Nanocat for 2 reasons: (1) These models have a full-width stern (as opposed to many other boats that narrow toward the stern) so there is more room to either side of the center tiller and (2) they have really firm air chambers, so you can sit on the side air chamber without squashing it and use the center tiller really conveniently (just one of several ways to sit in this boat and use the center rudder). Here is an album of photos and video clips showing the Solstice Quest sailing with our center rudder:

The rudder also works with our "tiller turner" system (sold separately, ) which converts the control of the center rudder to a push-pull motion at your side.

Dinghy sail kit options, upgrades and accessories page:
Center rudder system for inflatable dinghies
Same as above, but not as a substitution. Can be ordered by itself and if ordered with a sail kit or sailboat, does not delete the steering oar system. Compatible with Mariner, Seahawk II, Sport 400, Navigator II & III, Sevylor Caravelles. Here is an album of photos and video clips showing the Solstice Quest sailing with our center rudder:

Compatible with optional "tiller turner" system.

Adding this item to your shopping cart does the following:

1) Converts the sail kit or inflatable sailboat in your order to the heavy duty mast and 55 SF nylon sail with spar extension.

2) Adds a carry bag for the sail kit.

3) Adds a DC electric pump. Pump will do most, but not all, of the inflation chore for you but you must top off with a hand pump to reach recommended pressure.

Front Crossbar Extension - $12 shipping if bought alone
Extension snaps into front crossbar and makes it longer. Free shipping as an add-on item. Easily snaps apart for compact storage and transporting of your sail kit. The longer front crossbar (52 inches in most cases) these boats require is included standard when you order a sail kit for one of these boats. 9 - ft. Nanocat with folding sail kit
Inspired by the Saturn Nanocat NC290, this is our own Nanocat with our sail kit. It makes a really nice, extremely portable, inflatable sailboat. See price at bottom of page. The boat is light enough for one man to carry (about 55 lbs) yet it has carrying capacity of 600 lbs. The floor is raised above the water for lower hull drag. The material and construction is more durable than mass-market dinghies such as the Intex Mariners and Hydro-Force boats. Comes with one steering oar, leeboards, frame, mast, sail, attachment straps, and full instructions. Also included are pump, patch kit and boat bag. All the usual dinghy upgrades and options apply. This picture shows it with the 5011 sail and mast upgrade. Maximum engine capacity 2.5 HP. See it sail on this .

Sat Cat - Frameless 11.5' Saturn Catamaran with Sail Kit

Wonderfully comfortable and portable, the Saturn CR350 frameless inflatable catamaran with Sailboats To Go sail kit is a ton of fun. We call it the "Sat Cat" for short. See specs on the hull on the but come back here to buy because they don't have the sail kit.

You may be able to expand the picture by clicking on it. Picture shows it with these options: unbreakable polycarbonate leeboards, 55 SF sail and heavy-duty mast.

The hull is only about 50 lbs. and deflates for tranport & storage. The sail kit is about 40 lbs and folds to a compact size that easily fits in an optional 4' x 1' x 1' bag with room to spare.

The big rectangular space for people, surrounded by fat air chambers you can sit on top of, or sit adjacent to and lean back on, makes sailing this craft a very sociable and comfortable experience.

Only 1 steering oar is needed for this craft. But we provide 2 oars so that you can row it as auxiliary means of propulsion, using oarlock sockets on each side that are integral to the rear assembly of the sail kit. You wouldn't call it a true rowing frame, but it works nicely as a backup means of propulsion.

For sail kit without boat see

At this prices, the sail kit has a 45 SF nylon sail and phenolic leeboards on quick-release mounts. Consider upgrading to the 55 SF sail, and the unbreakable polycarbonate leeboards, adding slip-on wheels, and adding a sail kit bag for a more deluxe experience. Pakboat Puffin Saranac tandem folding kayak with deluxe sail kit
An open folding kayak for 2 people with our deluxe sail kit (see description for for what this includes). This is a complete sailboat in two duffel bags. The kayak (you could call it a canoe) weighs just 28 lbs, yet has a capacity of 2 persons/400 lbs and a length of 15 feet. Kayak assembles in about 20 minutes (twice that the first few times); similar for the sail kit. We're excited about the speed, portability and upwind sailing ability of this sailboat. The kayak is a non-inflatable PVC skin over and aluminum tubing frame. Between the frame and the skin are 2 inflatable tubes on each side, for safety and to tighten the skin. You will feel this boat flex under stress, just like a traditional eskimo kayak, but like an eskimo kayak, it's plenty strong. For more info see our Pakboat sail kit page.

Giant 66 SF Sail and Spars and Mast Slide
Be ready for really light winds with this giant sail. You'll have it mounted on spars already, so the switch from your existing sail will be fast. Mast slide included (see for lower price without mast slide or for sail only). This sail is like our 55 SF sail except the boom is also extended, like the top spar. Heavy duty mast recommended, as with the 55 SF sail. We would not use this sail above 12 mph winds. Best under 10. Terrific value pricing. Color: 2-tone blue (sail B) only. Although we say this is for light winds, at least one of our customers has ignored this limitation with no ill results.

The following was posted to the Snark Sailboat Owners Yahoo group by TCraig: "Just went sailing today with my Snark Sunflower with the 66 sq.ft. sail. The wind was gusting to 23mph and the Sunflower was tearing along at 4.5 mph for 2 miles per my Iphone gps app. I think that would be a top speed for the Sunflower. I had to really hike out to keep from capsizing and the mast was bending like crazy with the gusts but the mast was ok in the end. I mention this in case anyone is considering upgrading to the large 66 sq ft sail from the 55 sq ft sail. Be prepared for some energetic sailing!"

Spar set - boom, top spar, mast slide, ropes for our rigs, Sea Eagle, etc.
Segmented (3 sections each) and shock-corded inside, so they folds to 45 inches, but the parts stay together. You fold it with the sail still on the spars, for fast setup and take down. Fits our rigs, Sea Eagle, SOAR too. Add (spar extension) to fit Sunflower or our rigs with 55 SF sail. Mast slide is on pivot, so sail can be furled and stored vertically against the mast, held up by the halyard, without taking the mast slide loose from the mast. Spars are aluminum, for light weight and strength. Includes all necessary fittings and hardware. If you get a second sail, we recommend a second spar set to save time changing sails. It saves at least 20 minutes each time.

Upgrade to Reefing Batwing Sail, Mast, Etc. (substitution)
This is a substitution item to use only when ordering a sail kit or boat and sail kit from us. This item deletes the lateen sail, mast, spars and mast step and substitutes in a Batwing sail from Balogh Sail Designs. Includes substitution of mast, boom, mast step, sail and rigging. To buy these items outright, instead of as a substitution, order instead. The Batwing sail can be reefed by means of zippers to reduce sail area in high wind. The high-tech modern design of the sail makes it more efficient for sailing upwind. Across the wind (reaching) it is about equal to our 55 SF lateen sail in a strong wind. In light winds, it is inferior on all points of sail. It shines in winds above 10 mph. Size is 36 SF but performance in strong wind can equal or beat a larger sail, with less healing over of the boat. Note: Batwing sail comes with its own bag (included) for sail and mast and it is about 54 inches long (sail and mast fold to 54 inches). This bag is just for the sail, mast and boom. More info

This item is a 55-square foot sail and a spar extension that snaps onto our spars so they will accept the larger sail. Larger sail gives you more speed in light to moderate winds (5 - 12 mph). SOLD OUT Waterproof case for cell phone, GPS, small camera
A cell phone in a waterproof bag could be the most important piece of safety equipment on your boat. Some phones can be operated through the bag and sound travels through the bag just fine.

Bring a GPS along and clock your speed, chart your heading and bearing, and measure your upwind sailing ability. Put your car keys in it too. A small camera will fit. Floats empty and tends to trap enough air around objects inside so that it would float loaded. If you're worried about that put a few ping pong balls in to bulk it up.

Has place where you can attach strap or line to secure it to the boat.

Order this item to delete the nylon sail from your sail rig order and substitute a 45 SF custom dacron sail. Made to order so you choose the color or colors. Dacron marginally outperforms the standard nylon sail in terms of power & upwind sailing ability, but we don't really see much performance difference in our test. This is offered for the real sailing enthusiast who is willing to pay extra for a extra quality and a wide choice of colors. . We also have Dacron sail options in ready-made sails -- look for our "upgrade to white dacron" and our "upgrade to Neil Pryde sail" options.

You don't use them both at once for steering, but it allows you to steer with either hand without having to shift the steering oar from side to side. See for oar without oarpin. See for joining sleeve to mate two blade sections to make one kayak paddle. *Continental US only.

Motor Rudder short rudder head and u-bolt
If you want to sail your Zodiac-type boat with our sail rig, but also keep your outboard on the transom, one option for steering while sailing is to mount the rudder blade to the motor. All you need are: (a) This short rudder head and included square u-bolt, (b) the rudder that comes with the sail rig, and (c) an outboard stabilizer plate you obtain elsewhere ($59 - we'll tell you where) . The short rudder head subtitutes for the standard long head and tiller that comes with the sail rig. For explanation, pictures, and link to vendor of stabilizer plates

White Dacron Sail - 55 SF fits Sunflower and our rigs
Dacron is the sail material used in sails for most larger boats, because it is more durable and holds its shape better than nylon. A nylon sail stretches more in high wind, which can reduce your upwind performance. For years, we've sold Dacron sails that are custom made as an upgrade, as an upgrade taking 6 weeks and costing more than this sail. Now this sail brings down the price and eliminates the long wait. Fits Sunflower and is the same size and shape as our other 55 SF sails. Upgrade rudder blade to unbreakable
This item substitutes a polycarbonate unbreakable blade for the standard blade on a rudder in your present order. Cannot be ordered without ordering a rudder. Standard blade is pretty tough, but not unbreakable if you whack sideways on a rock. This will make it unbreakable. Shown here on our rudder-pin style rudder but works just as well on the clamp-on rudder. Canoe sail kit options, upgrades and accessories page: Dinghy sail kit options, upgrades and accessories page:
short strap with spring lock buckle
These are the short straps we use to attach sail kits to boats. Also works great to keep oars in their sockets. They are great for many other uses too. Very durable and reliable. Really nice lightweight, corrosion resistant cam buckles and 1-inch wide nylon webbing strap. About 16 inches long. Superior to the usual straps sold elsewhere because the buckles are stainless steel. Buckles made of other metals have to be heavy, clunky and hard to start the end of the strap through in order to be strong enough. These buckles are strong, corrosion-proof, and yet made of thin metal so they are light and easy to handle. We've been using these since 2008 and our experience has been uniformly great. The brand is Arno, but be careful -- not all Arno straps are stainless steel like these are.

Free shipping if ordered with something else that has a shipping cost. Otherwise, we'll add $8 for postage for up to 12 straps.

For the long straps, see

long strap with spring lock buckle
About 12 feet long and 1 inch wide with stainless steel spring loaded cam buckle. Cut to any length and seal cut end by passing through a flame (use caution until it cools). Great for holding boats on vehicle roof. Always use more than minimum number of straps when car topping a boat, for safety. We also use these straps on some of our sail kits to hold kit to boat.

Free shipping when ordering something else that has a shipping cost. otherwise, we will add $7 per 5 straps or less for shipping.

Oar shaft extension
Adds about a foot to our standard 7-ft flat-blade oar by snapping into the middle joint of it. Price is for one. Order 2 for a pair. Generally will ship free if we can throw them into a box with something big you ordered at the same time. Otherwise, it will be $10 shipping for one or $12 for two if we have to ship them on their own (lower 48 states pricing only). Our computers aren't smart enough to figure the shipping so we'll add it later in a separate transation.
Upgrade standard mast to super heavy duty
This item upgrades a standard mast that is already in your order to Super Heavy Duty. This is an upgrade item and cannot be purchased unless a standard mast is already in your order, either as part of a sail kit or by itself. If there is a sail kit in your order, then this item will also upgrade the mast step to the larger size needed for this mast and the mast slide to larger size, both at no additional cost.

Benefits of a stronger mast: (1) Stiffer, so your boat reacts quicker when you start on a new course and no energy is lost flexing the mast; (2) stronger, so you can go out in stronger winds with a heavier boat and withstand the resulting greater forces without mast failure.
Upgrade Heavy Duty Mast to Super Heavy Duty
Our Super Heavy Duty Mast is stiffer and stronger than our Heavy Duty Mast because it is 1/4" larger in outside diameter (1 1/2" instead of 1 1/4") and because all 3 sections have 1/8" wall thickness (as compared to bottom 2 sections only in the case of the Heavy Duty Mast, with the top section being 1/16"-wall).

This item is an substitution item only, which means you have to have something with a Heavy Duty Mast already in your basket and then adding this item upgrades that mast to Super Heavy Duty. If you also have something with a mast step and/or mast slide in your order, it upgrades those items too to fit the Super Heavy Duty Mast.

Super Heavy Duty Mast
8-ft. tall mast in 3 sections. 1 1/2" outside diameter. 1/8" wall thickness throughout. Anodized marine aluminum. It also has a slightly shorter setting at about 7'6". If you need the mast taller than 8 feet, add the .

The mast step for this mast is

If you want a complete package with sail, spars and mast, order or plus the upgrade to Super Heavy Duty mast. And don't forget the bottom extension if your project needs one.

Ships free if bought with enough other stuff that carries shipping charges so that this is covered. If not, we'll add dup to $15 shipping in a later, separate charge. (Higher outside lower 48 US states).

Cam Cleat on a Caribiner for Halyard or Sheet
A clip-on cam cleat. Clip it to something on the boat for holding the halyard or sheet. Jerk the line one way and this gadget grabs and holds it. Jerk it the other way and it releases the line.

Note: Cleating a sheet always increases your risk of capsizing; although it is designed to allow quick releasing, it might not be quick enough in a sudden gust. For many, it's an acceptable risk, for the sake of not having to hold against the tug of the sail all the time.

Our price is not the best. We offer it for your convenience. You can save a few dollars by finding it on Amazon or at a Home Center ("CamJam XT 1500 lbs"). Just make sure it is the one for ropes up to 3/8", not for thin cords.

Any Kayak sail rig with inflatable stabilizers
Straps onto just about any kayak and has inflatable stabilizer floats (amas) to help prevent capsizing. Adjustable for kayaks of different lengths and widths. Same rig with rigid stabilizer floats is or no stabilizers is . The advantage of rigid stabilizers over inflatable ones is much lower drag if submerged by strong winds. But under most conditions the inflatables work very well. And they are more portable. Please send us an email after ordering width and type of kayak. Folds to compact bundle less than 48 inches long.

The Any Kayak Sail Kit Without Stabilizer Floats
Like kayak sail rig, but without the stabilizer floats. There are a few kayaks that are wide enough, with flatish bottoms, so that they can be sailed without stabilizer floats if you have reasonable skill and some tolerance for capsize risk. This is also the sail rig for dinghies that can't use or because they lack the right attachment points on the stern. Regarding kayaks: A flat-bottomed hull, combined with some weight up front (a passenger, or some inanimate ballast like a sandbag or water bag) can provide a lot of stability. If later you find you want the floats, it's easy enough to add them -- the float arms just slide right into the front crossbar and lock in place with spring buttons. Regarding dinghies: This is just like , except this rig has additional sections that extend the side rails so they reach all the way to the rear crossbar and attach to it, stabilizing it so that it doesn't depend on having motor mount fittings or a stern handle to attach itself to. Regarding both: Email us describing your boat after purchase so we can give you the right width for front crossbar.

Fishing Boat Sail Rig
Everything you need to sail your fishing boat in a compact folding kit that just clamps on and away you go. No drilling or other modification of your boat is needed. This is intended for aluminum, fiberglass and plastic open boats. The gunwale clamps grab underneath the little horizontal lip that almost all such boats have at the top edge of the sides. If your boat has no lip, we can provide a bolt-on bracket that the clamps can mate with for $19 additional.

The rig includes a 45 s.f. nylon sail (red-white-blue-yellow), spars, mast, mast step (socket), frame that clamps to the boat and accepts the mast step and leeboard mounts, leeboards, gunwale clamps, a rear crossbar that goes just forward of the transom and provides pivot points for the ruddering oar, and a special wide-bladed ruddering oar and oarlock. You can even sail with an outboard mounted on the transom, because our ruddering oar (steering oar) system has many alternate pivot points: If the center positions are blocked by an outboard, use one of the side positions. If you prefer a traditional rudder, see A spar extension to accommodate the larger sail is included in the upgrade price. Custom-made dacron sails are also available in both the 45 S.F. and 55 S.F. sizes -- you choose the colors and custom lettering is available at $7/letter. A heavy duty carry bag for the rig is $39 extra ( ). Or see or , deluxe packages.

Deluxe Fishing Boat Sail Rig
Just like (so please read that item) but in a deluxe package: Includes larger 55 SF nylon sail, spar extension, heavy duty mast, heavy-duty carrying bag. This is the steering oar version, which is the version that works with an outboard motor on the transom. The steering oar also has an advantage over a traditional rudder in that you can turn the boat with it even if you have no forward motion. A rudder requires the boat to be moving in order to work. A steering oar does not, so you can't get stuck "in irons" (pointed head-on into the wind and not moving). But a steering oar puts a little more strain on your arm than a rudder does in a strong wind. Fishing Boat Sail Rig Deluxe Package 2
Same as except steering is by a traditional rudder. Install two eyebolts (included) on your transom to accept rudder pin or buy our if you don't want to install eyebolts into your transom. Fishing Boat Sail Kit with Center Rudder
Like item 7000 but with rudder steering instead of steering oar steering. This is a rudder that requires mounting two eyebolts (included) to the transom of your boat. For clamp-on rudder substitution, add item 7008 to this item.
Clamp-on rudder

Complete rudder with sturdy clamp-on mount that allows up-down and tilt adjustment. Kick-up blade allows beaching and protects against damage from underwater objects. Use on square-back canoe, rowboat, fishing boat, inflatable transom boat (Zodiac and similar). Even mount on side of canoe using a canoe motor mount. Clamps to transom or motor mount just like a trolling motor. See if you want to substitute this rudder for a non-clamp-on rudder in a sail kit you are ordering.

Optional push-pull tiller system: . If conventional swing tiller is a problem in your installation, add our Tiller Turner option. This offsets the tiller motion to the side and converts your arm motion to push-pull instead of side to side. For example, mount rudder beside a motor, and tip up one or the other, depending on which you are using. The swinging tiller might hit the tipped-up motor, but the push-pull Tiller Turner will solve that problem. See: for more info on this option.

Optional Unbreakable Blade Upgrade: Standard blade is phenolic (black trapezoid), and it's pretty good. But if you want a longer, more unbreakable blade upgrade to our polycarbonate blade by adding this item to your order:

Best inflatable boat: 9 compact tenders put to the test

Robert Melotti

  • Robert Melotti
  • September 9, 2021

Rob Melotti and the PBO test team put some lightweight, portable inflatable dinghies through their paces in Lymington to find the best inflatable boat

Inflatables are everywhere: paddleboards , canoes, kayaks , tents, kites and wings – and inflatable boat technology has long been a practical option for tenders, RIBs, liferafts and lifejackets .

But what the ‘new wave’ of inflatable boats brings to the practical boating landscape is the air floor, which makes very stable, very lightweight tenders a very practical option for people with limited stowage ie owners of cruising boats under 30ft.

And the market has responded with a selection of offerings under 2.4m weighing under 20kg. So which is the best and what should you be looking for to get the most for your money?

We tested nine models sold by eight different brand names. The inflatable boats were superficially quite similar, but in the accumulation of small details it was possible to pick a few favourites.

We rowed and motored all of the inflatable boats solo, and most of them with two aboard. We weighed and measured them and found a lot to like.

What’s the best inflatable boat? 9 options tested

best-inflatable-boat-3d-twin-v-shape-230-air-deck-tender

3D Twin V Shape 230 Air Deck Tender was a good all-round performer – and best on test

3D Twin V Shape 230 Air deck tender

French manufacturer 3D Tender was one of the earliest producers of ultralight inflatable tenders. This model sports premium touches, such as davit rings and the most high-spec pump of all the inflatable boats on test.

In terms of convenience it is a rucksack carry bag with a large front pocket for the pump and accessories. The zips will need maintenance though.

inflatable sailboat dinghy

The V floor is a single chamber, keeping set-up time to a minimum and keeping the weight down. The lack of safety lines on the side makes carrying as a two-person team a little less convenient than some of the other inflatable boats, but the keel strip will help preserve this boat.

The rowlocks double as cleats and the rubbing strake will provide strength but little in the way of splashproofing for passengers.

best-inflatable-boat-force-4-02lite

Force 4 02Lite was the lightest on test

Force 4 02Lite

This model is very similar to the Seago Go Lite (also tested), including the rucksack, which was our favourite on test for carrying comfort, although you do have to beware of any loose objects inside the bag dropping out of the side enclosure flap.

inflatable sailboat dinghy

The Force 4 02Lite was the lightest package overall and packed down to just 90cm long.

The oars were the smallest on test, which affected the rowing performance, but it was the only inflatable boat with open rowlocks – so you can use your own oars.

The bench is adjustable, but I wasn’t able to position it far enough aft to brace my feet against the transom under oars.

There are three D-rings for making a towing bridle on the bow but no ergonomic carry handle.

The rubbing strake is minimal with no splash guard and there are no davit lifting eyes.

Crewsaver Air Deck 230 is solidly built and joint cheapest, but is outclassed by 3D Tender’s lightweight V floor design

Crewsaver Air Deck 230

Best cheap inflatable boat

The pack we were sent for testing had the incorrect seat included, but we were able to substitute a seat from one of the other inflatable boats on test without difficulty.

The rucksack doesn’t have a front pocket, but there are no zips to corrode and the adjustable webbing buckles mean the top opening of the bag is quite forgiving for repacking.

The safety lines are robustly attached to the hull, which is a feature that will pay dividends long-term, but adds a bit of weight.

inflatable sailboat dinghy

The rubbing strake is also weighty, but the splash guards will keep water out of the boat.

The coned aft sponson caps are hard plastic, enabling vertical storage without damage and the rowlocks double as cleats.

There are davit rings in the bow and through the thick transom board, plus the bow handle is wide for ergonomic carrying.

Excel Ventura SL200

From a Midlands-based company that specialises in inflatable boats, this came with a great double-action hand pump and was the only boat on test with an over-pressure valve – a useful feature for exposure to the hot sun.

The safety lines are sturdily attached and splash guards make up part of the rubbing strake protecting the sides and keeping water out of the boat.

The rowlocks double as cleats and the bow handle is wide enough for a proper grip.

inflatable sailboat dinghy

Excel Ventura SL200’s double action hand pump made short work of inflation

Davit fittings are supplied and the sponsons are shaped to add waterline length and buoyancy aft. The duffel carry bag was the sturdiest on test.

This inflatable boat comes with a good long set of oars, although we had to sit side-by-side to make any progress under oars with two adults on board.

Quicksilver was big – but also heavy

Quicksilver Tendy Airfloor 240

This boat has an inflatable keel as well as a removable inflatable floor. There was also a rigid slat athwartship between the floor and keel, which increases the weight overall.

inflatable sailboat dinghy

This is one of the priciest and heaviest inflatable boats on the test and one of the largest in packed dimensions.

It features a fuel tank strap, a decent keel strip to prevent damage on slipways, a decent bow carry handle and rowlock cleats.

The rubbing strake is quite meaty as well without being particularly splashproof.

The carry bag is very forgiving – opening flat like a groundsheet.

There were no carry handles on the sponsons and the safety rope fixings aren’t as solid as many of the other inflatable boats on test, although there are rowlock cleats and the seat is fully adjustable.

Light weight makes for easy handling on land and in the water

Seago Go Lite 230

Seago is a distributor, supplying UK chandleries and there are similarities between this model and the 02Lite from Force 4.

This model is very light and compact – just 0.5kg heavier than Force 4, but packs down to the same 90cm length.

The oars are very short, but are fixed using a pin and thole system which some may prefer over the Force 4’s rowlocks.

The PVC material is described as 1100 Decitex (Force 4 is 800 Decitex) and the backpacks of the two were identical: comfortable to carry and forgiving to repack due to their large side aperture rather than a narrow top.

The rubbing strake is minimal and there is no ergonomic bow handle.

YAM 200T is not rated for two adults

This 2m inflatable boat has a fixed seat and was unique on the test for having wooden slats to reinforce the floor. This means less pumping up, but slightly increased weight.

Like the 3D tender there is no safety rope so carrying between two crew involves spreading your arms wide from bow handle to stern handle placed on the sponsons. It is rated for one adult and one child – the smallest by rating on the test.

There is a hefty rubbing strake with raised levels to block spray and the rowlocks double as cleats. The oars are miniature and the bow has three D-rings for rigging a towing bridle but no ergonomic handle for carrying. With two adults aboard we would have been better rowing side by side – but it was no slouch under engine.

The nicest boat on test to row

YAM 240 (STI) Air Floor Sport Tender

This is the most expensive model on test and features an inflatable keel as well as a floor section, plus two sponsons to inflate.

With that much to inflate a high quality pump would have been better, but there is a pressure gauge included in the package to get everything sufficiently firm.

The seat is fixed but the oars were nice and long, which made it the nicest boat to row. As with the YAM 200T there were no safety lines fitted and carry handles are spread far apart, which makes carrying more difficult.

But there is a good, ergonomic bow carry handle and the inflatable boat is rated to carry 400kg, the highest rating on test. The rowlocks double as cleats and the rounded aft end of the sponsons have protective, hard plastic caps.

inflatable sailboat dinghy

Smaller diameter sponsons means more space aboard – but less freeboard

Talamex Superlight SLA230

Talamex is a Dutch brand imported by EP Barrus. This inflatable boat had the narrowest diameter sponsons on test, which creates more internal space, but less freeboard.

It’s an extremely lightweight package, with a thin transom board, but nice long oars and a good carrying handle on the bow.

The pump supplied is a single-action hand pump and the bag folds out completely flat like a groundsheet, which is very forgiving for repacking.

inflatable sailboat dinghy

The bag has nice carrying handles on the narrow ends. The seat was massively adjustable and the rubbing strake is generous without offering very much splash guarding.

The safety rope attachments look a bit vulnerable and there are no other handles on the sponsons.

Launching the Seago 320

Verdict: Which was the best inflatable boat on test?

This group of inflatable boats can be subdivided in a few different ways: by length, by price and by weight (note there is also a group of rucksack boats and a trio of air-keel boats).

I think the best on test goes to the 3D Tender, which manages to keep the weight down, comes complete with a very high-spec pump, a very user-friendly rucksack bag with a big front pocket and a ‘slight V form floor’ that inflates as a single chamber.

There are no safety lines or a bow handle, so carrying the boat when inflated is less natural than some of the others and it’s the second most expensive.

The best bargain buy is probably the lightest, smallest package: Force 4, for me, is preferable to the very similar Seago model because of its ‘open’ rowlocks. But if you prefer captive oars, the Seago is slightly cheaper.

The Crewsaver is the same low price and probably more robust and seaworthy than the Force 4 or the Seago while being easier to carry when inflated than the 3D Tender. But without the V floor I think it’s a less versatile performer.

I didn’t see the benefit of the two 200cm dinghies we tested: both were noticeably small in use without being smaller to pack and stow or lighter to carry.

The 240cm V Floor models can carry bigger loads at greater speed, but if you really need that level of performance you have to accept the extra set-up time, weight and stowage.

Best inflatable boats – key facts and figures

What makes the best inflatable boat for you?

best-inflatable-boat-bag

Rucksack bags were easiest to carry

The bag details matter when one of the main selling points of a product is its portability. We looked at handles, zips and overall design. Metal zips will corrode without a regular rinse in fresh water, but as long as the zipper track is plastic, then replacement zipper trucks can be fitted relatively cheaply.

Carry handles at the narrow ends are very useful and half of the inflatable boats tested can be carried as rucksacks. A few of the boats pack away in bags that deconstruct on all four sides like groundsheets, with webbing straps and adjustable buckles crossways and lengthways.

These are very forgiving and yet still pack up tightly and securely. We also looked at the quality of the bag material: is the bag likely to survive chafing, stretching, damp or UV exposure for as long as the dinghy itself?

best-inflatable-boat-weighing

We weighed each of the inflatable boats in their carry bags and found quite a variation in boat weights

Size, weight and price

Our facts table will quickly show you the lightest and smallest packs and there are four tenders priced under £500.

The two longest inflatable boats in the test (YAM 240 and Quicksilver 240) were in the biggest bags (110cm and 120cm respectively), and were the heaviest packs weighing over 20kg even without any accessories.

Only three of the nine tested boats weighed in at under 20kg straight out of the box. There was an 11kg difference between the lightest (Force 4 02Lite) and the heaviest (Quicksilver Tendy Airfloor 240).

The Force 4 comes in a rucksack bag that is 20cm shorter in length than the Quicksilver and over £100 cheaper.

But unless size, weight and price are your only criteria, then a simple numerical comparison could miss some important details.

Pumps and pressure

Some of the air floors are rated for 1psi; others at 11psi. Most of the sponsons were rated at 3.6psi, which shouldn’t require too much brow mopping for foot- or hand-pump operators.

Five of the inflatable boats came with foot pumps, but the double-action hand pumps with the 3D and the Quicksilver were a joy to use.

best-inflatable-boat-launching

All the boats were easily carried by two when inflated

Manual handling

It’s an ironic linguistic quirk that a tender should be so regularly treated without much tenderness. Even a few hours’ use on a clean slipway incurred scuffs, dings, grubby marks and a few minor tears to the carry bags.

Grass is far kinder than concrete for inflating, but is in short supply at busy locations. We looked at keel strips, rubbing strakes, safety line attachment points, bow handles and more… including the relationship between price, weight and fit-out.

The 6 Best Inflatable Dinghies for Shore Leave and Safety

The 6 Best Inflatable Dinghies for Shore Leave and Safety

Inflatable dinghies are a great way to explore the coastline, especially when you're at anchor offshore . Paired with a trusty mini telescoping paddle  or motor, they give you the freedom to roam new islands, coves, secluded spots and explore (all for a relatively small cost).

They are easy to store and deflate when you aren't using them. They come with all sorts of features. They can also get you to shore safely in an emergency situation .

So, if you're undecided on whether an inflatable dinghy boat is the best choice for you, read on.

Why Buy an Inflatable Dinghy?

If you're the adventurous type like myself and like to travel across the ocean to new lands, an inflatable dinghy is a must-have for boat safety and convenience.

Many sailboats tow an inflatable, or keep them stored on deck, ready to deploy. It means while your yacht is secure in the bay, it leaves you free to do the tourist thing and access the delights of your new surroundings.

It also means you can take advantage of shops and chandleries to restock on vital supplies.

Convenience to Shore

Imagine it's a warm summer evening and the beach in the bay looks inviting. There are bars and restaurants dotted along the coastline. Can you think of a better way to end the day than a refreshing drink and some excellent food under the stars?

It's time to deploy the inflatable dinghy from your davit system . Without one, you are destined to enjoy the view from afar instead of savoring the atmosphere for yourself.

Save on Marina Costs

Since you want to get to shore, a marina will charge you for each trip unless you have your own inflatable dinghy.

Marina fees are expensive wherever you go in the world. The chances are you'll find yourself anchored off some golden bay to avoid the expense.

You may not want the hassle of maneuvering into a slip, especially if you're only staying a night or two. Many inflatable dinghies can cost as little as $500 - $1,000.

In the grand scheme of things, the versatility of a dinghy and the number of times you'll thank the stars you got one will outweigh the cost. It'll also pay for itself very quickly when you look at the savings of marina fees and the ease of getting to shore .

Features of an Inflatable Dinghy

There are many makes and models of even the best inflatable dinghy boats. Each has its merits. I want to focus on the features I look for and what you should expect from an average inflatable.

I've also have included some other considerations you should have when buying one. For me, safety is paramount, so those features are included.

  • Lightweight  - Inflatable dinghies are lightweight and easy to deploy and maneuver. With a limited crew, or even if you're a solo boater, using your dinghy should be a straightforward affair.
  • Storable  - Because they are inflatable, storing them away either on the boat or at home during the off-season should be a breeze. Simply deflate and fold into the protective bag. Stow it away until the next spring.
  • Towable D-rings - Many boaters tow their inflatables behind them as they sail. Because they're lightweight, they create minimal drag and have little to no effect on the performance of the boat.
  • Faster  - Dinghies are nimble and lighter in the water so they're usually quicker.
  • Fuel-efficient  - Because they create minimum drag and skip over the waves, the fuel efficiency increases. Again, I come back to the fact that inflatables are lightweight.
  • Stable  - Inflatable dinghies are very stable boats. They're filled with air, making the boat light and buoyant. They don't rock as much as rigid boats.
  • Suitable in all waters -   Inflatable dinghies are an excellent choice for shallow waters and get you right up to the beach. They're also ideal because of their stability, which makes them equally as effective in deeper waters with an outboard motor .
  • Enhanced safety features  - With a rigid boat, when you spring a leak, it invariably sinks. Inflatable boats are constructed with individual air chambers. If deflated, it only affects that part of the boat. It means for you to sink, you would need to be pretty unfortunate and spring a puncture in multiple locations.
  • Durable material  - Many of the inflatable dinghies on the market today are made from multi-layered UV-protected PVC. This makes them highly durable and sun resistant.
  • Wooden or aluminum floors  - While some have inflatable floors, others have the option of a reinforced wooden or aluminum floor. This gives the boat all the advantages of maximum buoyancy but with added stability.

Recommended Pressure for Inflatable Dinghies

  • Tubes and Chambers:  3.6 PSI
  • Inflatable Keel:  5 PSI
  • Inflatable Floor:  10 PSI

The 6 Best Inflatable Dinghies

1. newport vessels dana inflatable dinghy tender.

Check price on Amazon

Newport Vessels is one of the most recognizable and popular inflatable dinghy manufacturers. The Dana dinghy model is constructed from USCG-rated, three-layer 1100 Denier UV protected PVC, which makes it durable and sun resistant .

If you like to use your tender or dinghy on super sunny days like me, this is a real bonus. It features a marine-wood floor with aluminum framing , an air keel, sturdy carry handles and sturdy D-rings for towing or attaching a bimini.

  • Material : UV Coated PVC
  • Size : 8 ft 10 in - 12 ft 6 in
  • Max Load : 1,603 lbs for largest model

2. Pexmoor Inflatable Dinghy

This Pexmoor dinghy is considerably cheaper than the Newport Vessels model, but that doesn't mean the quality isn't there. It's constructed from 3-ply sun-treated 1100D PVC to ensure minimum wear and tear.

It has a wooden reinforced floor for durability and stability, which is great if you have a poor sense of balance like me. It also has multiple air chambers for safety should you suffer a puncture. It even has a rod holder.

This inflatable dinghy is travel-friendly, car-friendly and deflation-friendly, making it easy to store away.

  • Material : PVC
  • Size : 7 ft 5 in - 10 ft
  • Max Load : 880 lbs for largest model

3. Dolphin Model 270 Inflatable Dinghy

Like the others featured, this dinghy is sun-treated to avoid UV damage. It has heat-welded seams and is  suitable for salt and freshwater environments.

The floor is inflatable, so it lacks the rigid wooden elements of the Newport Vessels dinghy, but it holds 8 PSI and gets sturdy and hard .

The emphasis on this boat is very much on the "ease of use" angle, meaning that it is a great choice if you want a dinghy that's easy to store, easy to transport and durable. If like me, you want a hassle-free boating life, this is a reliable choice.

  • Material : Reinforced PVC
  • Size : 8 ft 8 in
  • Max Load : 1,070 lbs

4. Uboway Inflatable Dinghy

This Uboway is at the budget end of the dinghy market, so it may not stand up to the rigors of being a sea-going tender. However, it's a great option for ferrying you, your goods and your family to and from the harbor side to your anchored mooring.

It has an inflatable floor , safety lines and a bench seat. You can mount a 4 HP outboard motor . If you're as safety conscious as me, it has four separate air chambers, which is an excellent safety feature should one spring a puncture. It's also lightweight, coming in at just 52 pounds .

  • Material : Polyester and PVC
  • Size : 7 ft 55 in - 9 ft 83 in
  • Max Load : 836 lbs for largest model

5. Hydroforce Caspian Pro 93 Inflatable Dinghy

This mid-priced Caspian Pro has three D-rings to attach a safety line. It's also constructed from high-grade PVC and, like the Uboway, has four chambers for added safety and buoyancy.

The solid floor, coupled with the inflatable keel, gives this dinghy greater stability and maneuverability, especially when it's operated under power of an outboard engine. It has safety drain valves and a super-tough rubbing strake for protection against impacts and friction.

  • Size : 9 ft 16 in
  • Max Load : 1,058 lbs

6. Bris Inflatable Dinghy Tender

Like the Dolphin, the seams on this Bris Inflatable Dinghy are heat welded, which means there's no glue and only a super-durable seal.

This dinghy is at the upper end of the price scale and has a lot of features. It has two aluminum seats as well as a rigid aluminum floor . It has a drain valve, three separate air chambers and can support 10HP outboard motor .

It's also the only dinghy on the list to have a bright orange color , making it the ideal safety boat for emergency evacuations and to be easily spotted from search and rescue teams.

  • Material : PVC with polyester support
  • Size : 19 ft
  • Max Load : 1,102 lbs

Final Thoughts

Choosing an inflatable dinghy for your sailboat or cabin cruiser is a no-brainer, especially if you want all the convenience and none of the hassle. It allows you to get to shore safely. That's a bonus as we sailors like to explore the new places we find the wind has blown us.

An inflatable dinghy is not just another cheap boat, it will become your most valued accessory, and one you will come to rely on. Also be sure to protect your dinghy with a cover when it's not in use. That way, it's sure to last!

What they say about Tiwal

inflatable sailboat dinghy

I think I kind of accepted that in buying an inflatable boat I was expecting there to be some compromises obviously, but it’s actually very easy to handle, it’s quite fast, it’s quite quick in the right conditions. I think it’s very responsive to sail as well. It sails better than I thought it would.

Minicat Overview

Sailboat in a bag?! You heard that right. The MiniCat inflatable portable catamaran sailboat collapses down into duffel bags that you can take with you anywhere; no truck, trailer, nor slip needed. Assembly time is not much more than rigging a traditional boat, yet it offers a unique sailing experience, with acceleration only an ultralight can offer. From beginners to experienced sailors, there's a MiniCat for everyone. No wonder it’s the world’s favorite portable sailboat with more boats sold than any other brand.

Benefits of the MiniCat Sailing Catamaran

inflatable sailboat dinghy

Fun for ONE

Performance that you’d expect from a winged mainsail sloop-rigged sailing ultralight, capable of quick acceleration and sustained flying of a pontoon. Points well upwind thanks to the jib, though fastest point of sail are reaches. Long shoal fins minimizes leeway. Sails are balanced such that neutral weather helm can be achieved (though a pro and a con).

Extensive optional upgrades and accessories include asymmetric spinnaker, genoa, traveler, motor mount, pin-top storm sail, front storage trampoline, masthead float, carbon fiber mast, etc., more than any other brand.

Fun for ALL

With room for the whole family and the stability only a catamaran can provide, MiniCats are a great way to enjoy a day out on the water.

Toss one (or even several) in your car, camper, or yacht on your next weekend getaway. Or fly with one to your next tropical destination (airline baggage fees may apply). These boats open up new locations to explore and more sailing possibilities.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the warranty on a minicat.

24 month manufacturer’s limited warranty on defects and workmanship, and as of November 2023, a 7 year manufacturer’s limited warranty on the pontoons for defects and workmanship. It does not cover misuse, intentional or accidental damage, nor normal wear & tear. minicat-warranty">Click here for full details on what’s covered or not. The slightest bump pops the rudder auto-release cleat.

The holding power of the CL257 Auto-Release Racing Mini ClamCleat is adjustable. Watch this video or download the product manual .

I have a hard time pointing upwind.

Your jib luff may be sagging too much, causing the jib to luff earlier than it ought to. The wire luff should be straight and bear all the load from the sails, not the forestay. The forestay is only a backup, in case the jib halyard fails. For a tight jib luff, over-tighten the forestay, hoist the jib and cleat the halyard, then back-off the forestay. Adjust your rig tension appropriately for the windspeed and sailing conditions.

I have a hard time tacking.

You may be turning the tiller too far, causing it to act as a brake. Another tip is to allow the jib to backwind to bring the bow across before releasing and sheeting on the proper side.

Is there much leeway?

Keep in mind that the pontoons sit high on the water with little wetted surface. With their long keel fins, MiniCats track very well, even when flying the windward pontoon.

How fast can it sail?

Our best speed in a MiniCat 420 is around 12 knts. Keep in mind these are class D sailboats, rated for Beaufort 4 winds (up to 16kts).

UNODC with funds from Japan Govt. provides Rigid Hull Inflatable Boat to Navy

inflatable sailboat dinghy

The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), with the generous funding from the government of Japan, handed over a Rigid Hull Inflatable Boat (RHIB) to the Sri Lanka Navy. The Ambassador of Japan to Sri Lanka, H.E. MIZUKOSHI Hideaki handed over the RHIB to the Commander of the Navy, Vice Admiral Priyantha Perera at the Navy Headquarters today (19th July 2024).

The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, which is committed to suppress trafficking of narcotics and other maritime crimes, continuously assists stakeholders who throw their weight behind such endeavours.

The Rigid Hull Inflatable Boat (RHIB) is essential for the swift and safe approach and boarding of vessels during visit, board, search, and seizure (VBSS) operations. To enhance the Sri Lanka Navy’s capabilities in these operations, particularly carried out by the Navy’s Special Boat Squadron, the UNODC provided this RHIB to the Navy, with funds made possible by the government of Japan.

The occasion was also attended by the Defence Attaché of the Embassy of Japan in Sri Lanka, Captain Yuki YOKOHARI, officials from United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime and a group of senior naval officers.

Police say they think the boat is a lifeboat from a larger vessel named Theros.

The release says the bodies are believed to be a 60-year-old woman and a 70-year-old man from B.C. who were reported missing on June 18 to the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre in Halifax, which runs search and rescue efforts in Eastern Canada.

Police say the pair left the harbour in Halifax on June 11, en route to the Azores archipelago in Portugal.

The Mounties say Nova Scotia’s medical examiner service is working to identify the bodies.

26-year-old man drowns when wave knocks him off inflatable, Minnesota police say

A 26-year-old man drowned in a Minnesota lake after he and another man were knocked off an inflatable, authorities say.

The Dakota County Sheriff’s Office said the victim and a 19-year-old man were on an inflatable together July 13, but they were “outside the designated swimming area” of Lake Marion at Antlers Park in Lakeville.

The men did not know how to swim, according to the sheriff’s office, and a wave from a boat caused them to “fall into the water.”

A bystander rescued the 19-year-old, but the 26-year-old victim went under water, the sheriff’s office said.

A diving team found the victim’s body more than two hours later about 40 yards offshore in 8 feet of water, authorities said. He was identified as Reynaldo Antonio Patishtan Hernandez, of Northfield.

“We thank and commend the bystander for his heroic, lifesaving efforts of the 19-year-old and extend our deepest sympathies to the family and friends of Mr. Patishtan Hernandez,” the sheriff said.

Antlers Park features a “large swimming beach,” but there are no lifeguards on duty.

Lakeville is about a 25-mile drive south from Minneapolis.

At Least 40 Migrants Die in Boat Fire Off Haitian Coast, U.N. Says

The boat was carrying over 80 people and bound for Turks and Caicos. The disaster underscores the gang-fueled crisis that has spurred many Haitians to leave.

By David C. Adams and James Wagner

David C. Adams reported from Miami, and James Wagner from Mexico City.

At least 40 migrants were killed when a boat they were traveling on from Haiti caught fire, a United Nations agency announced on Friday. The boat, which was carrying over 80 people, left the northern coast of Haiti on Wednesday en route for the Turks and Caicos Islands 150 miles away, the agency said .

An additional 41 migrants were rescued from the boat by the Haitian Coast Guard, the agency said, with 11 taken to a hospital. It said the boat caught fire off the coast of Cap-Haïtien, a city in northern Haiti.

The cause of the fire was not immediately known.

The episode, which took place around 3 a.m. Wednesday, was another disaster for the Caribbean country, which has been upended by rampant gang violence and an unfolding humanitarian crisis. This year, coordinated gang attacks rocked the capital, Port-au-Prince, forcing the closure of its airport for nearly three months. Since then, nearly 580,000 Haitians have been internally displaced, according to the U.N.

“This devastating event highlights the risks faced by children, women and men migrating through irregular routes, demonstrating the crucial need for safe and legal pathways for migration,” Grégoire Goodstein, the head of the U.N.’s International Organization for Migration in Haiti, said in a statement on Friday.

He said that Haiti’s socioeconomic situation was dire and that the “extreme violence” over the past months has pushed Haitians to resort to “desperate measures even more.”

The U.N.’s International Organization for Migration in Haiti said it had confirmed the number of survivors with its personnel on the ground and with Haiti’s National Office of Migration.

Cap-Haïtien, the country’s second-largest city, has been relatively unaffected by the gang violence that has wracked the country in recent months, but it is a jumping-off point for migrants. Attacks on public transportation, including on the main road between Port-au-Prince and Cap-Haïtien, has limited the potential for migrant smuggling.

Haiti has experienced a wave of gang violence that has brought surges in kidnappings, killings and the takeover of much of Port-au-Prince since the assassination in July 2021 of President Jovenel Moïse by armed men who broke into his bedroom and gunned him down in front of his wife. His killing is still under separate investigations in Haiti and Florida.

Amid the disorder, Prime Minister Ariel Henry resigned in late April. In May, Garry Conille, a former U.N. official, was appointed prime minister by a presidential transitional council.

Eight months after the United Nations authorized the use of international forces to be deployed to Haiti, the first wave of foreign law enforcement officers from Kenya arrived last month to try to wrest control of Port-au-Prince from dozens of armed groups that have attacked police stations, freed prisoners and killed with impunity.

The Kenyans in Haiti are the first of an expected 2,500-member multinational force to deploy, an effort largely organized by the Biden administration.

Since March, the U.N. migration agency said, the Haitian Coast Guard has observed an increase in the number of departures by boat. Coast Guards from countries in the region, including the United States, the Bahamas, Turks and Caicos and Jamaica, have also reported a growing number of boats originating from Haiti being intercepted at sea.

On Thursday, American and Bahamian officials announced the suspension of a search for a missing boat with an estimated 60 migrants bound for Florida. It was believed to have departed on July 4 from a collection of islands in the Bahamas that is a popular jumping-off point for Haitian migrants trying to reach the United States.

In June, a group of 117 migrants from Haiti arrived off Key West, Fla., in a sailboat, according to the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office.

Overall, maritime migration of Haitians — as well as Cubans fleeing for financial and political reasons — to the United States has reached its highest levels since the 1990s, according to numbers complied by the Migration Policy Institute , a nonpartisan research organization based in Washington.

It estimated that 7,000 Haitians and 6,000 Cubans were intercepted at sea by United States officials during the 2022 fiscal year, and that initial data showed similar trends for the 2023 fiscal year.

Report: Moscow may arm Yemen’s Houthis over US support for Ukraine

U nited States intelligence agencies say Russia could send advanced anti-ship missiles to Yemen’s Houthis in retaliation for Washington’s support for Ukraine, The Wall Street Journal reported on Friday, citing US officials.

According to the newspaper, Washington is working behind the scenes to stop the arms transfer.

Meanwhile, US Central Command chief Erik Kurilla was said to warn that US-led operations were “failing” to prevent Houthi attacks on the Red Sea. In a classified letter to US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, Kurilla reportedly called for potentially stronger military action and a “whole of government” approach that would step up diplomatic and economic pressure on the Houthis.

“Many people found the tone of the memo to be a bit shocking,” The Journal quoted a defense official as saying. According to the official, Kurilla’s point was that “US service members will die if we continue going this way.”

The US and other nations, notably Britain, have carried out extensive airstrikes on Houthi targets in Yemen in an effort to forestall the Iran-backed rebels’ attacks on merchant ships in the Red Sea.

Middle East Eye reported in June that Saudi Arabia had talked Russia out of providing anti-ship cruise missiles to the Houthis. However, US intelligence services assess that Moscow is renewing its push to arm the Houthis after the White House approved Kyiv’s use of US-made weapons to strike targets inside Russia, the Journal said, adding that the nature of the intelligence was unclear.

The newspaper said the White House is making a diplomatic push through a third country to dissuade Russia from the arms transfer.

According to the Journal, US officials have seen recent indications that Russian President Vladimir Putin was still considering arming the Houthis.

Putin said in June that the White House’s policy toward Ukraine, which Russia invaded in 2022, could drive Moscow to arm US adversaries.

“The response can be asymmetrical, and we will think about that,” Putin told reporters at an international economic forum in St. Petersburg.

Two US officials told The Journal that Russia has not transferred any missiles to the Houthis, but that representatives of the Yemeni rebels were seen in Moscow. The newspaper cited officials as saying that an arms transfer from Russia to Yemen could make use of Iranian smuggling routes .

Iran currently supplies much of the Houthis’ munitions. A Houthi-launched drone that struck Tel Aviv on Friday — killing one person and injuring several others — was Iranian-made, the Israel Defense Force said.

One analyst told The Journal that munitions supplied by Russia “would represent a qualitative leap” in the Houthis’ capabilities.

Hundreds of Houthi missiles, missile launchers and attack drones, as well as dozens of storage facilities and several command centers, air defense systems, radars and helicopters, representing “a significant amount of Houthi capability,” have been destroyed in US-led strikes, a defense official said.

According to The Journal, the White House’s authorization for military action against the Houthis extends to missiles and drones about to be launched. The newspaper said the US military have also taken other limited steps, including seven planned military operations.

Amid Kurilla’s call for a more comprehensive strategy against the Houthis, the Journal cited an administration official as saying that some measures had already been taken to complement the military operations. The Journal also cited an administration official as saying that Washington had requested US Central Command to compile a broader list of targets, including specific Houthi members.

Still, some US officials who spoke to the newspaper criticized Washington’s policy in the Red Sea.

“If you tell the military to re-establish freedom of navigation and then you tell them to only be defensive, it isn’t going to work,” one official was quoted as saying. “It is all about protecting ships without affecting the root cause.”

The Iran-backed Houthis have targeted ships in the Red Sea since November, saying they are doing so in solidarity with the Palestinians in Gaza amid the Israel-Hamas war there. The war was sparked on October 7, when the Palestinian terror group led a thousands-strong attack on southern Israel that left nearly 1,200 people dead and saw 251 taken hostage.

Houthi attacks have harmed at least 30 merchant ships — some with no connection to Israel, the US or Britain — and sunk two.
