North Korea accused of executing dozens of teens for watching South Korean dramas

• A South Korean outlet said that North Korea executed dozens of teens for watching South Korean dramas.
• It said the shows were reportedly stored on USBs that were floated over the border by defectors.
• North Korea has been accused of using harsh penalties for those caught watching South Korean media.

In North Korea, watching your favorite Korean dramas could end in tragedy.

According to a report by South Korean broadcaster Chosun TV, around 30 middle schoolers were publicly shot last week for watching South Korean dramas.

The shows were reportedly stored on USBs that were floated over the border by North Korean defectors, it said.

Business Insider was unable to independently verify the report.

South Korean officials did not comment directly on the report, but according to Korea JoongAng Daily , one unnamed South Korean Unification Ministry official told reporters that "it is widely known that North Korean authorities strictly control and harshly punish residents based on the three so-called 'evil' laws."

One of these is North Korea's Reactionary Ideology and Culture Rejection Act , which forbids individuals from disseminating media that originates in South Korea, the US, or Japan.

It is unclear whether those restrictions apply to foreigners visiting the country, like the Russian schoolchildren preparing to attend summer camps in the country.

Greg Scarlatoiu, the executive director of the Committee for Human Rights in North Korea, told BI that "under the circumstances created by the intensified crackdown on information from the outside world, initially conducted under the pretext of COVID, these reports are definitely plausible."

This is not the first instance of North Koreans reportedly being killed for their association with content from their southern neighbor.

According to a 2022 UN Secretary-General report, a man in Kangwon Province was killed by a public firing squad after his neighborhood watch unit saw him selling digital content from South Korea.

A 2024 report on North Korean Human Rights, released by South Korea's Ministry of Unification, claimed that phones in North Korea are regularly checked for "South Korean-style language" and that wearing white wedding dresses is punished for being "reactionary".

A video was released earlier this year showing two teenagers being sentenced to 12 years of hard labor for watching a K-pop video.

Despite eyewitness accounts compiled by Amnesty International , the North Korean government has denied that public executions take place in the country.

According to North Korean authorities, the last execution took place in 1992.

North Korea is still technically at war with its southern counterpart, with their conflict in the 1950s ending in a truce rather than a peace treaty.

A defector told the Korea Herald that in 2020, North Korean parents were forced to sign a pledge stating they would ensure their children do not watch "impure video content" at home.

Recently, experts have speculated that North Korean military personnel could be sent to aid Russian efforts in Ukraine, following closer ties between North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and Russia's President Vladimir Putin.

Representatives from North Korea didn't immediately reply to requests for comment.

Why Wimbledon is the Grand Slam title every player craves

Iga Swiatek started flirting with a very strange idea last fall. As the tennis season wound down, Swiatek had every reason to stick with the formula that had delivered her to the top of the mountain. Instead, she floated the idea of spending part of her off-season training — on grass.

She would not play another grass-court tournament for nearly eight months. Tennis spends the first three months of the season on hard courts. The Australian Open, a classic hard-court event, was a little more than six weeks away.

None of this stopped visions of tennis on the sport’s ultimate grass, at Wimbledon’s All England Club, dancing through her mind. “I had these ideas,” Swiatek said last month as she sat next to the French Open trophy in Paris. (Her coach had told her that these ideas were terrible.)

Then came the flex. “If I would lose here earlier, maybe I would be able to play two more weeks on grass, and then be a better grass player.”

Ah, the champion’s lament — and in Swiatek’s case a very specific one. She’s a wondrous player; a generational talent who could quit tomorrow and walk into the Hall of Fame. But the Pole, like so many who have come before her, knows that her career will remain incomplete unless she wins Wimbledon.

Becoming the youngest man to win a Grand Slam title on all three surfaces is a testament to two qualities that separate Carlos Alcaraz from the rest: his variety and his dedication. The feat would be impossible without them and it’s still an achievement so tough that it has eluded some of the game’s greats.

Winning a major on clay, hard and grass is something Pete Sampras, John McEnroe (both no clay) and Ivan Lendl (not on grass), plus otherwise all-conquering champions such as Venus Williams and Justine Henin, couldn’t muster.

Alcaraz has not just done it, but he’s done it at a younger age, 21, than any man previously — beating fellow Spaniard Rafael Nadal’s previous record by 19 months.

To understand how Alcaraz pulled this off, we have to go back a lot further than the three majors he has won: the 2022 U.S. Open, Wimbledon a year later, and the French Open, thanks to a five-set win against Alexander Zverev in a dramatic final last month.

The Briefing: How did Alcaraz meet the moment with his serve?

It was fitting that Alcaraz served out this match in a tiebreak because the game in which he botched serving for the match was a complete aberration in an otherwise masterful serving performance.

Alcaraz came into this match with a first-serve-points won percentage of 72 for the Championships, the 68th-best in the men’s event. Serving had been a real issue, having been broken multiple times in his six matches before the final.

On Sunday, he produced his best serving performance of the tournament. Alcaraz was just a point away from registering only the third completed Grand Slam tournament match in which Djokovic could not break his opponent’s serve.

Giving up just a single break to such a devastating returner underlined the serving rhythm he found. Alcaraz kept his speeds high, but crucially he kept hitting his spots too, and was brave with his second serves.

There was one second serve at the start of the third set to get him out of a tight game that landed plum on the line and completely bamboozled Djokovic. In Sunday’s final, Wimbledon got a glimpse of how irresistible he is when this area of his game clicks.

The Briefing: Did Djokovic need Alex de Minaur?

So much had to go right for Djokovic to even get a chance to play Alcaraz in the Wimbledon final 39 days after undergoing surgery on the meniscus in his right knee. Ultimately, it might have gone too right as he looked to play himself back into shape.

Djokovic got lucky, not just by drawing a qualifier and a wild card in the first two rounds, but by seeing Alcaraz and world No 1 Jannik Sinner land on the other side of the draw. Then he played Alexei Popyrin, who had little Centre Court experience, and a formless Holger Rune.

His next opponent posed what appeared to be a formidable test — Alex de Minaur, another Aussie, a lover of grass and, most importantly, a top-10 player with the wheels and the engine to run all day. De Minaur was even showing some newly acquired power, to hang with Djokovic when he revs through the gears.

But De Minaur tore his hip cartilage and pulled out, leaving Djokovic with more rest before he played Alcaraz, five steps up in toughness. By the time he had raised his level to where it needed to be to hang with Alcaraz, Djokovic was down two sets.

So much different. Too different. Everything had gone right — when he just needed a little on-court adversity to be ready for this ultimate test.

The Briefing: The art of playing an injured player?

One of tennis’ most difficult psychological tests is playing a match against an ailing opponent. That’s any match, against any ailing opponent — let alone a Wimbledon final against a 24-time Grand Slam champion.

Just a few games in, it was clear that Djokovic was far from full fitness — hardly a surprise just over five weeks after meniscus surgery. While a half-fit Djokovic can still take care of most of the field on grass, Alcaraz is not most of the field.

Tennis is a sport of plans and reverting from those patterns is much trickier than it looks — but Alcaraz took full advantage of an opponent whose movement is compromised. Alcaraz ultimately gave an exhibition on how to cope with an opponent not at 100 per cent.

He didn’t massively change his approach, or start indiscriminately chucking in drop shots. He played attacking, percentage tennis, taking advantage of the holes in Djokovic’s game created by his knee.

Predominantly, this was a performance of controlled aggression. It demonstrated the exceptional maturity of this 21-year-old.

The Briefing: How much can a first game mean?

Notes from the first game of a final match. It lasted 12 minutes. There were seven deuces. Djokovic seemed like he had to hit 50 serves. A sound emanated from his lungs after each one, more moan or groan than intimidating grunt. It was too hard, too early.

Back and forth they go, another break-point chance for Djokovic. A big serve sets up an easy forehand into the open court, especially for a player who has won 24 Grand Slam titles. A big breath. Contact. It sails wide.

It’s 1-0 Alcaraz, and it really shouldn’t matter, because first games don’t matter in five-set tennis matches, and with Djokovic, first sets barely matter either.

But this game feels like it does, not just because it was hard — really hard — but because it was so much harder than so many of his first games in his 36 other Grand Slam finals. That number, ridiculous as it seems, is not wrong. It was a fitting start to a very hard afternoon.

Game, Set, Match: Alcaraz dispatches Djokovic for Wimbledon title

Carlos Alcaraz beat Novak Djokovic in the Wimbledon final at the All England Club 6-2, 6-2, 7-6 on Sunday.

The No 3 seed prevailed over the No 2 seed in a one-sided victory, ultimately decided by Djokovic’s hampered movement after knee surgery, Alcaraz’s massively improved serve, and his psychological edge over Djokovic in net exchanges.

It is Alcaraz’s second Wimbledon title and his fourth Grand Slam singles title. He completed the ‘Surface Slam‘, winning on grass, clay and hard courts, by beating Alexander Zverev in the French Open final at Roland Garros in June.

Novak plays it classy after the match

There’s almost nothing in tennis I wait for more than a Novak Djokovic on-court interview. Especially after the fiery crowd comments and the ‘air violin’ playing (which he said was for his daughter who is in the crowd today), almost nobody does drama like this guy.

He was a bit of a different elder statesmen today, however. He started off with a joke and humbled himself pretty immediately by giving Alcaraz credit for ‘having it all today’.

I appreciated his self-reflection and gratitude and the fact that he avoided the earlier interactions he had with the crowd.

Combine that with a really nice at-the-net embrace he had with Carlos and this appears to be somewhat of a changed man.

A couple of great jokes about his son’s future in tennis as well. Really impressed with Novak’s attitude and presentation out there today.

Live updates: Why are there flight delays at Will Rogers? What we know about outage

A faulty system update from Crowdstrike , a major cybersecurity firm, has led to widespread outages and delayed flights, including in Oklahoma.

According to USA TODAY , Crowdstrike said one of its recent content updates had a defect that impacted Microsoft's Windows Operating System, adding that the incident was "not a security incident or cyberattack."

"The issue has been identified, isolated and a fix has been deployed," said a statement from Crowdstrike. Microsoft, meanwhile, said "the underlying cause has been fixed," but that residual impacts continue to affect some of its Microsoft 365 apps and services.

24 delayed flights out of Will Rogers Airport as of Friday afternoon

As of 12:57 p.m. on Friday, 24 flights out of Will Rogers Airport have been delayed, according to FlightAware. Three have been canceled.

INTEGRIS Health's internal processes affected by outages

A spokesperson for INTEGRIS Health said the hospital system doesn't utilize Crowdstrike, but the outages are affecting some of its third-party vendors.

The global IT outages aren't directly impacting INTEGRIS Health, but the hospital system is experiencing behind-the-scene disruptions mainly with its internal processes.

Medical services and patient care are not affected by the outages. INTEGRIS Health is continuing to monitor the situation.

Oklahoma Human Services, Service Oklahoma report system impacts

Service Oklahoma, the provider of driver and motor vehicle services for the state, reported on X that the outage is impacting driver services. Many driver license services are currently unavailable at the agency and licensed operator locations.

Written and drive tests are still available along with online driver license and motor vehicle services at http://service.ok.gov .

On X, the Oklahoma Department of Human Services also reported a technical outage . The department is working with its partners to resolve the issue.

Historical Society affected by outage

The Oklahoma Historical Society said its Research Center will be closed today.

Also due to the outage, the OHS Museum, near the Oklahoma Capitol Building, will remain open but have free admission today from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m.

Microsoft outage leads to delays, cancellations at Will Rogers Airport in OKC

Will Rogers World Airport in Oklahoma City is experiencing delays and cancelations after a cybersecurity firm reported outages linked to an update.

As of Friday morning, three flights were canceled at the Oklahoma City airport on Friday, and 14 were delayed, according to FlightAware .

CFD Services:  We have developed methods that allow us to apply the best tool to a specific design problem. From simpler panel code methods to the most advanced RANS models with multiple degrees of freedom in waves, we offer sensible solutions to make sure budgets are spent in the most effective way, maximizing the benefits for your project.  We perform our simulations relying on the Das Boot panel code and STAR-CCM+  RANS solver. Numerical models are run on KND parallel server as well as a remote cluster featuring several hundred cores. Most hydro matrixes are computed within 24 hours.

VPP Services:  KND has 15 years of experience developping racing yacht VPPs.  We work with the North Sails VPP, enjoying a very close relationship with its developers. Our VPP modeling capabilities range from the 'standard' fixed keel monohulls configuration to mutihulls and fully foiling yachts using 6 dof.  Our proprietary aero coefficient libraries can be scaled to fit most yacht design programs. In additions, we regularly work with sail designers to develop custom libraries for the most advanced projects.  KND will provide an efficient evaluation of the performance of any given yacht. 

Feedback loop: Last but not least, we have developed a link between our VPP and sailing data analysis allowing us to constantly validate our numerical against real data and refine the accuracy level of our predictions for new yachts.

Performance analysis

KND vision relies on an in depth understanding of sailing yacht performance. Along the years, we have built a wide knowledge database and developped methods to deliver more effective analysis and reduce turnaround time. 

We gathered through the years a group of expert engineers, working collectively to develop our tools and methods. Each team member has a wide experience of inshore and offshore  performance analysis, from fixed keel to fully flying yachts. 

From electronics calibration, to performance reports (starts, strategic, maneuvers, performance, fleet...) our support yields better debriefs, checking sailor's feelings against valid & relevant data.  You will be able to quantify performance gains and develop your polars and sailing targets.  

Custom data analysis and reporting can be provided as a remote service or on site (and even on board) depending on the specificities of each program. 

Performance software

Building on KND's expertise in performance analysis, we constantly develop software to make our work more efficient. We believe that these tools can help all sailors who want to look into logged data progress toward squeezing the last % of performance from their boat.

ReXY Gold is meant to provide single and multi-boat analysis for sailors relying on a gps tracker only.  ReXY Team will provide detailed insight for the most advanced programs. It works jointly with RaceReplay and PerfQuery performance analysis programs.

K&N Oil Filter

I know the 4.3 liter Mercruiser oil filter has a higher oil flow than a normal auto filter. I was reading that K&N has a marine filter called K&N gold they say is better than stock. Is it as good as the Mercruiser oil filter when it comes to flow? I dont really care about filtration much on the water.

Re: K&N Oil Filter The Mercruiser filter always has done a great job when it comes to keeping my oil clean so I don't need any better filtration than it has. I just worry about flow to keep things cool I think heat the biggest enemy in a marine engine and a good flow is most important. This K&N filter would be nice because it's so readily available at auto zone... Marine stores aren't always easy to find or open when you need them.

Re: K&N Oil Filter Yes, but I read the auto filters don't have the flow of the mercruiser brand filters. I compared the holes in the Merc brand they are huge compared to all the auto filters. I don't trust the flow not even the AC brand that's made for GM engines.  

Re: K&N Oil Filter Even if you were running a high volume oil pump and a 10qt oil pan, the oil filter even plugged up with gunk will still outflow the pump, you engines main oil gallery feed off the oil pump I'll bet isn't 1/2" I don't know chevy specs, but on a ford big block 427 with improved oiling it's only a chamfered 1/2" right off the oil filter adapter. I thing all the flow rating you read are just advertising and yes some may flow more than others but it's moot, who cares if one flows 10gpm and one flows 15gpm when you engine only flows 3gpm.

Re: K&N Oil Filter I personally run the KN ONLY because its very hard to get to the stock filter on a SBC with no remote filter. I only use it for the nut. But if I didnt have this problem I'd run anything but a Fram.

Re: K&N Oil Filter i run napa filters in everything unless the customer asks for factory parts. I've never had a problem.

If so I wasted a lot of money on filters over the years and feel like I was bamboozled by everyone that told me I won't get good enough flow from the auto filters.

Re: K&N Oil Filter I stick by genuine. That way IF a filter fails (splits or what ever the reason) you are covered from the OEM. I know because I say this from experience. Afriend has a 5.7 mercruiser with 439 hours on the clock and was outside fishing. The weather turned foul and got halfway back when alarms went off, he checked the engine bay and there was oil everywhere, he still had about 5 miles to the marina. Scouped what oil he could out of the bilge, put that in the engine (water and all). He made it back to the marina but the engine was rattling some what. Went to the Mercruiser dealer (who services his engine). Dealer filed a claim with Mercruiser who sent him a complete new engine with in 2 weeks.  

Re: K&N Oil Filter You can never go wrong using oem, it's what the manufacturer calls for. That's true for anything you buy for the setup you have. Back to your friend, the oil filter failed or was it installed incorrectly. ie: The rubber o-ring pulled off the old filter, and no one checked to see it was on the old filter, and they installed a new filter with a o-ring, and there was 2 o-rings on the block and the guy in the marina had to make good. Not that merc made good. Friend didn't care someone gave him a new motor. Moral of my long post, always check that the o-ring comes off the block when you change the filter, it should still be on the can.
