We patiently waited for the Wizard Of Oz room to open and wow was it amazing!! I don't want to post any spoilers but this room(s) is something else! So many cool features. Unfortunately we had a few little glitches with the room and there was no air conditioning on a 95 degree day so those things threw us a bit. But this room is awesome! I wish we would have waited just a bit longer for them to work the kinks out, but I highly recommend all the rooms at 13th hour!
I came here years ago for the Haunted Scarehouse, and recently discovered they had a number of Escape Rooms! I knew the scarehouse was good, so I figured the escape rooms would be well done too! I have so far done 2 of them, the Dungeon and the Cookhouse. The Dungeon was different from any other I have done. It was really unique and exciting! I love that these are all themed around the same story/family and that they have a haunted element that most of the others don't have. I love the dark twist on the entire set up. I highly recommend checking these out if you are an escape room fanatic like me or just looking for something different to do!
I travel for work and try to get a room in wherever I go. I'm a single player and this place was specifically recommended to me. Chase and Christian are amazing game masters! I have done John Hayden and The Cookhouse and love the way the games are set up and the full vibe of the facility. The location is great for the creepy feeling they strive for and the building just adds to that perfectly. The skeletons climbing the brick are awesome. They don't disappoint with the games and I'll be back for more! Thank you for amazing experiences and more to come!
My two new friends!
took 17 of my daughters Friends13 yrs old limo style . had greatest time ever I'm 55 I was screaming like a little kid so much fun and food trucks after . c u for Xmas scare
I have done so many escape rooms at 13th Hour and everyone is better than the next! I cannot recommend this place enough it is truly so fun. I have played with people from 14 to 60 years old in my family and everyone always has a great time. I also tried the hatchet throwing combo and it was super fun, the instructor was great and gave us some tips. I will be returning!!
First haunted house and I would definitely recommend! The only complaints were the parking, long wait despite getting timed tickets and the overall crowd. But would have been longer wait without the timed tickets. Overall, not too creepy but just right. I would have liked it better if the house itself wasn't as crowded. It sorta took away from the scary mood. No one touched us which I'm glad about. Most of them were jump scares so nothing too crazy. I loved the dark room!
The Wizard of Oz Escape Room was such a fun escape room. I've done escape rooms in New York City, Westchester County and Florida and this was hands-down the best. I can't wait to do the other rooms at 13th Hour Haunted House & Escape Room. I highly recommend this place.
The kids had a great time!!! Scarey!!! We recommend take the family everyone will enjoy it!
My friends and I are avid escape room enthusiasts. The wizard of oz room was so much fun! Definitely check them out! They have other rooms there too. And they change throughout the year.
Have done all the escape rooms and haunted houses and can say this place is top notch, new oz escape room is amazing and our game master last night was amazing as well. Kudos will be returning to do again.
This place is SO COOL. I especially loved that our large party of 9 was able to stick together in one room. We did the Grand Parlor and it was just a very cool puzzle to break down as a team. There were multiple rooms needed to be unlocked so it was a lot of fun to have a few smaller teams of people working on different aspects of the puzzle simultaneously. The creepy/scary Christmas music and decorations are right up my alley and were an awesome touch. Maybe it was a little extra creepy because of how grey and rainy it was this day but 13th Hour is not like any other escape room that we have done before. Definitely check it out!

Wizard of Oz Escape room is AMAZING
I have done other escape rooms at 13th hour, and they’ve all been really good. Courteous and friendly employees, great themes, unlimited clues. But this weekend we did the newest room based on the Wizard of Oz and it was just incredible!!! Completely immersive, great props, challenging but possible, and just a fantastic experience. Highly recommend.
Four of us did the Wizard Of Oz escape room at 13th hour. We've done about a dozen other escape rooms, and this was one of our top 2. The special effects were great, the puzzles were challenging but manageable ( with a couple of hints). The theme was really well done. We barely made it with 1:36 min to spare. I highly recommend this escape room, it was great, and our host was welcoming and very helpful. It was a bit challenging to find in building B, on the back (not by the garage doors- almost more of a challenge to get in as to escape out : ) Worth every penny! I really like that there was literally only one lock, everything else needed to be solved- much better than the mall escape rooms where it's just one locked box after another.
My wife and I have done more than 750 rooms, and these are some of the best in the world!! We recommend playing them all, but we particularly enjoyed The Grand Parlor, The Trophy Room, and The Great Room!! The gamemaster team was awesome, friendly, supportive, and engaged! And, it was great talking with the owner about the games. We strongly recommend doing these games immediately!!!!
A fantastic escape room. Puzzles were challenging, and unlike any our group has done. Trophy room was an excellent experience.
I read about this place on Facebook. It didn’t disappoint. I went twice. It took about 40 minutes to go through so it was worth the price of admission. U can also take some great pics with the characters and the props. The actors and staff were so friendly
Thank you for the team who puts this together, it really was awesome! ***** Pros: - reasonably priced for the attraction - parking is free - Outdoor tent coverage to protect from rain - Food vendor - lots of photo opportunity! - The line moves very quickly - last year we were in line for 2 hours, this year with the express line pass it was maybe 20 minutes - The theme is fantastic, lots of 'haunters' inside - Multiple floors and a dark room! My favorite was the dark room! Lots of startles! - They do a great job of trying to space out the groups - there are always laggers, has to be expected. - The setup, layout, design of the attraction is top rate! - The haunters, top rate! - If you don't like to be scared, I would not recommend b/c you will be started!!! Cons: - There is a line, so an express pass really doesn't seem to be needed. ***** I did not participate, but they have an escape room and hatch throwing which can be included in the pass as well. Very well done! Highly recommend, it takes about an hour to go through. You may be entered with another group depending upon the size of your group.

How Do We Get These Scores?
Our Rating System
UPDATE FOR 2022: Our former “Atmosphere” and “Theme” categories have now been combined and renamed “Immersion.” Our intent with this is to give more appropriate credit to attractions that have shown a clear focus on achieving and maintaining better customer experiences (both inside and outside the attractions) and developing creative storylines.
Each of the category scores in this review are calculated using a weighted average of several questions that we rate on a scale of 1 to 10.
The following breakdown explains what these scores typically mean. All of our Teams use this as a reference for providing accurate ratings:
10: “Peak Performance” This score is treated as if it has a chastity belt on it. “10’s” are reserved for the best of the best; those that we feel could not possibly improve on what they’re doing.
9: “Innovative and Groundbreaking” It rocked! Nearly everything seemed to go as planned and it was one of the best we’ve ever seen! These guys are leaders in the industry, and attractions like this are truly hard to come by.
8: “Solid” A high score on our scale. They had a good handle on it and, overall, they knew how to use it well. Most attractions can learn from what these guys are doing.
6 to 7: “Good” We could tell that a good effort was made. However, we’ve seen this done much better at other places, or can detect areas where significant improvements can be made. This is about the top end of what we’d call “Family Friendly.”
5: “Average / Fair” Compared to the competition, they weren’t the best, but definitely not the worst. Scares and Special Effects in this range are usually considered “Family Friendly.”
3 to 4: “Below Average” We could see that a clear attempt was made, but most other professional attractions are doing a much better job at this.
1 to 2: “Poor” It appeared that very little time, thought or effort was contributed to this aspect.
0 (Zero): “Non-Existent” No apparent effort was made to make this a significant contributor to the attraction.
Afterword: This rating system is standardized across all of The Scare Factor’s official haunt review teams. However, keep in mind there will always be minor differences between Teams, as we all have varying levels of experience. Regardless, we do our best to remain true to our core values, which is to promote all haunted attractions! Perhaps the biggest thing to remember is: sometimes the score – in and of itself – doesn’t tell the whole story about an attraction’s merits. This is why we provide detailed explanations for each category… to help you better understand how and why we chose the score/s that we did. We do our best to not let feelings or emotions rule our judgement, while also viewing the attraction through the lens of the typical haunt-goer. But, because all reviews with ratings are inherently subjective, this is nearly impossible to completely prevent. Though, when in doubt, we tend to give slightly lower scores than our original “gut feelings” to account for this, and also give the attraction more room to improve over time. We also do our best to be fair and consistent across all of the haunts that we review. We know that you’ll be looking at these scores and comparing them to other attractions, so we hope this review helps you out in that aspect. Do you have some feedback about our review system? If 13th Hour Haunted House and Escape Rooms is not already considered to be one of the most elite haunted attractions in the country, it should be. This two-story haunted house is in its 7th year and was formerly known as the Haunted ScareHouse.13th Hour offers three different sides to the horrors of the infamous Hayden family.
Your journey will begin in the Hayden House of Nightmares. Their family home has been damaged in a massive storm that only serves to reveal the hidden evil that’s hiding within. Next, you will ascend into The Attic of the Hayden House where additional terrors await you. Lastly, a separate ticket will immerse you into The Darkside of the Hayden House, where their newest experience for 2018 will plunge you into total darkness.
All ticket holders have the option of choosing to wear a glow stick (provided by the attraction) that will allow the actors to touch you!
13th Hour also offers multiple escape rooms that have been ‘rated some of the most immersive and original in the country!’

(20% of Cast Score) Did it seem like there were enough actors?: 10
(30% of Cast Score) How creative, believable and convincing were the actors?: 9.5
(20% of Cast Score) How interactive were the actors (verbally and physically)?: 9.5
(15% of Cast Score) How creatively & appropriately did they use dialogue?: 9
(15% of Cast Score) Was there a good variety of characters?: 9
The cast is energetic and really into their roles. Most of this demented family lives in the downstairs portions, rather than in the Attic, but there were certainly plenty of them and, for the most part, they seemed to be everywhere! They utilize loud jump scares often but they also savor interacting and harassing you with their dialogue. The denizens want to follow you and get into your ear and your head.
As we were entering the main haunt, the area is like an actual time machine. Other than giving us the rules of the house, an impressive actor gave us a brief story of the evil Hayden Family before sending everyone back to the 1970’s when the Hayden’s still occupied this very place. We can tell you, you’re in the 70’s alright! The German-sounding scientist with a dirty, smelly jumpsuit was laughing and orchestrating the chaos was among the most believable characters we encountered.
Additionally, the first floor is full of weird folks popping out of every nook and cranny and there’s more things that will come at you to try and grab you than you can shake a stick at!
This is a contact haunt, but not overwhelmingly so. You can also choose to not be touched by opting out of the glow necklace before entering. So, you might be safe from the actors physically, but this place has more tricks up its sleeves and, we assure you, you aren’t safe.
We opted for the glow sticks and, while while we were in the Attic, one of the clowns stole a ride on the back of one of my teammates!

Costuming Scores (15% of Final Score):
(15% of Costuming Score) How complete / finished did the costumes appear to be?: 9
(25% of Costuming Score) How creative / detailed were the costumes?: 9

(15% of Costuming Score) How effectively did they use masks (if used)?: 9.5
(25% of Costuming Score) How appropriate were the costumes for their scene/s & theme/s?: 9.5
The costumes within the attractions did fit into the scenes and worked well for the characters they were portraying. They mostly consisted of sinister country folk, clowns, etc. Because of this, the costumes didn’t need to be extremely elaborate or detailed. What they utilized worked. They also looked real without looking like plain, everyday clothing.
The makeup was exceptional as every character seemed to be made up to the max so that the actors’ faces popped out. Every character seemed to have detailed, full-face makeup that was hard for us not to stare at at times.
The masks used were also realistic, as if they could be the person’s real head. There wasn’t a lot of them; they seemed to be more focused on using makeup.
The scientist at the front was a good example of an appropriate costume. The combination of his attire, makeup, and (unfortunately for us) his smelliness took his character to a whole new level!

(20% of CS Score) How easy was it to find their information before* arrival?: 10
13th Hour is very easy to find; although, it’s located inside a fairly standard-looking commercial building, which is one of the very few down sides of the haunt.
As previously mentioned, you can choose whether you want to get touched or not and despite that, it felt safe going through the house. We didn’t notice any real safety issues and the actors seemed to be good at knowing the level of how far they could push it.
The staff that we encountered were professional, friendly, and personable throughout. All of the information you may need is easily accessible on their website including one of the most detailed back stories we have seen so far.

(60% of Atmosphere Score) How obvious was it that you were at a haunted house before entering?: 8
(40% of Atmosphere Score) How well did the atmosphere prepare you for what you experienced inside?: 8
From the outside, if it wasn’t for the music, props, and decor, you may not guess what’s waiting for you inside this standard-looking commercial property. It’s hard to know what to expect, but once we were inside, the atmosphere was great.
On the inside, the atmosphere is completely different. The theming is so well done that it is just weaved into every aspect of the experience, from the characters you will come across to the areas between the scenes!

(15% of SFX Score) How effective were the SFX at providing scares / entertainment?: 10
Right off the bat, the time machine sets you up and gives you an idea that this is going to be a high-tech haunt. This journey back in time is full of many different special effects, from moving floors and high-end animatronics to many different lights, sounds, screens over our heads, effective strobes, lots of unexpected and entertaining things, a spinning floor. and noise-makers. It’s a special effects extravaganza, but they were effectively used. We got a lot of ‘wow’ moments and scares from them. We must say this category was very well done.
We traversed through what looked to be the Hayden’s tool shed full of chainsaws and other implements to an outdoor area queue line bringing us to a front porch. Yes, there are some movie-quality sets to admire in their waiting areas! Some of the sets were designed to where members of the family could pop out from all over the place. We were actually glad to be waiting for a little bit as it gave us a great chance to look around and experience the full show.

(50% of Theme Score) How well was the theme carried throughout the attraction/s?: 10

Before you go inside, it’s hard to tell what the theme is going to be unless you read the full background story on the website, and we highly recommend doing so. The theming is as consistent as country gravy once you get inside and your tour begins. Everything is connected, from the horrible Hayden Family all the way down to their escape rooms! Each one represents rooms in the Hayden House before the damaging storm.
In The Attic, there was a carnival theme in a big part of this area. It was full of clowns and more of their realistic animatronics.
The Dark Side of the Hayden House takes you to a totally dark world where many live things await you.

They have so many fright techniques at 13th Hour that I haven’t seen used before. In other words, they will definitely get you here one way or another.
They utilized so many different places and techniques for this sicko Hayden Family to get you. If the family members aren’t attacking you themselves, the special effects will catch you by surprise. It’s more of a barrage of scares… especially in the downstairs area.
They do separate you into small groups so they can target every member of your group. It makes the show very unpredictable. Some of the scare tactics included a guy pushing the front end of a car at us, surprising sounds, and vehicles that even tried to repeatedly run us over! They will do whatever it takes to get a scare in.
The pitch black areas of The Dark Side could certainly be terrifying for a lot of people. Mix that in with all of the things that are hiding from within and quite a few screams will be produced. Our group was small and we went through by ourselves.
While there are many parts that are intense here, it is also a fun experience trying to find your way in the dark. Be sure to keep your hands in front of you at all times and keep moving. Whatever is waiting for you in there will spring out at you unseen, but with quick bursts of light that are strategically placed to keep you on track and find your way. It’s creative, which says a lot about a maze that’s mainly about darkness.
The Attic even wraps up with a cool little mini escape game, where you have to match body parts to the weapons that mangle and slice them. (Hint: make sure you put them in the right order) How can this be scary you might say? Well, I figured it out, but the actor here must have realized that and pulled me out into the hallway leaving my teammates alone to fend for themselves! There are other surprises waiting for you up there too…

There is a solid hour of entertainment to be experienced at 13th Hour if you choose to add the dark attraction to your visit list. If you opt for adding an escape room as well, then you will have a two-hour experience.
The outside entertainment, while you are waiting in line or hanging out after your trip through the house, is plentiful and expands the whole experience. Outside the building, there are carnival games, food, and hard rock music playing like Rob Zombie and Ghost. They also have some huge props you can take pictures with, giving you something else to do while you wait.
Ticket prices for the ‘2 Floors of Fear’ start at $28. This includes admission to both the House of Nightmares and The Attic. For those who want to go all out and find your way through the dark, you can purchase combo tickets for $35. They also have other ticketing options that include an escape room of your choice and you can purchase them with or without Dark Side.
The pricing is extremely reasonable here and, if the line to get into the main 2-story haunt is too long, you can get a fast pass for only $10 per person. The line moves in big chunks though, as 20 or more people at a time are loaded into the the pre-show area.
Overall, this one of the most fun and entertaining haunts that we’ve visited this season and, as good as the haunt is, we recommend trying at least one of their 5 escape rooms, which are at the level of some of the best in the country.

Kelz – 10 / 10 – October 23, 2021 This had to be one of the best haunted attractions I’ve been to. The outside looks like a regular …show more warehouse but the inside is absolutely insane and not what I expected. The characters and interaction are entertaining as well as terrifying. As soon as you enter the warehouse doors you are in another world. After the time machine, prepare yourself for nonstop action. The staff are great, the sets are amazing. I already have my tickets for 2022 and can’t wait.
Brian – 10 / 10 – October 13, 2018 This haunt is great. Great sorry love. Great actors. Great everything. The wait was surprisingly …show more short for how many people were there. The added new attractions make this place even better year after year. Actors are great and enjoyable. They enjoy there job which makes it a better experience all the way around.
Mikayla – 10 / 10 – October 1, 2017 This haunt was awesome and is my favorite place! I go every year! The staff is amazing, the que line …show more actors are fantastic. Overall, the haunt and the actors are awesome and try to scare you in every way possible. Every corner theres a new scare. These haunted attractions in North Jersey are sure to scare
It's that time of the year: All things scary, creepy and downright unsettling are making their comeback for spooky season.
For some, conquering the haunted houses, fright-filled mazes and ghoulish hayrides is what October is all about. In North Jersey, there is no shortage of Halloween attractions to visit, from large warehouse productions to homemade backyard mazes. Here are seven haunts across North Jersey for this season's adrenaline junkies.
Brighton Asylum, Passaic
A year-round haunt, Brighton Asylum has been staged inside a 13,000-square-foot warehouse in Passaic for over a decade. As the legend goes, the institution − which was known for its insufferable living conditions − shut down in 1952 after several staff members and patients disappeared. Now, the haunted asylum has reopened, and visitors are admitted into the attraction as the institution's newest patients.
Inside, visitors get an experience filled with ghosts, deranged patients and crazed nurses through Hollywood-quality sets and special effects. Visitors can even opt for the "contact" option, accepting a free red glow necklace to indicate that they're okay experiencing physical contact during their time at the asylum, which could include forced separation from your group, simulated abduction, crawling and physically being picked up.
Brighton Asylum also offers other attractions like timed escape rooms and the horror museum, which features movie props from infamous horror movies.
Go: In the rear of 2 Brighton Ave, Passaic; 201-848-2517, brightonasylum.com
Hours: Varies depending on event and time of year
Tickets: $37.99 for general admission to three haunted houses, with additional rates for different attractions
13th Hour, Wharton
At 13th Hour, visitors navigate their way through a two-floor haunted experience at the Hayden Farmhouse. The haunt is modeled after the story of the Hayden family, whose time at the home became filled with mysterious and eerie events. "The Dark Side of the Hayden House" is a second haunted house that is a lightless maze dotted with immersive scenes. The bravest guests can also choose to participate in the optional "touch" experience, where actors inside have permission to touch you as you explore the house.
13th Hours also offers eight different escape rooms, featuring actors after 6 p.m. on the days the haunted house is operating. Their newest attraction, Haunted Hatches, is an axe-throwing experience that uses glow-in-the-dark hatches and targets.

Hayride of Horrors and Corn Maze, Hackettstown
Visitors are taken on a haunted hayride through the woods and a haunted corn maze on the grounds of Corrado's Farms in Hackettstown. The attraction features strobe lights, live actors, clowns and animatronics. Each hayride takes about 45-minutes, including a refreshment stop halfway through.

Haunted Red Mill, Clinton
Located within the Red Hill Museum Village, the Haunted Red Mill in Clinton will rise from the dead on Friday the 13th. This year's theme, "The Dead Don't Die," will offer scares from clowns, zombies and other creatures of the night. The attraction spans about 10 acres and will include a terror trail through the woods, an apocalypse hayride, mazes and more.
The Haunted Red Mill will also offer "Happy Haunts" on Oct. 14, 21 and 28 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. These are a family-friendly, abbreviated version of the attraction for kids.
Go: Red Mill Museum Village, 56 Main St, Clinton; 908-735-4101, theredmill.org/haunted-red-mill
Hours: 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays from Oct. 13 to Oct. 28

Ridgewood Halloween Maze, Ridgewood
If you prefer smaller scale attractions and want to support a local effort, look no further than the Ridgewood Halloween Maze. Greg and Nancy Stewart have put together this loops-and-traps maze in their Ridgewood backyard every Halloween for 28 years. A 1,000-square-foot Halloween maze, this attraction features a 27-inch wide pathway, with one-way doors and mechanical ghouls.
The Stewarts have also said that children tend to complete the maze quicker than adults, so the only way to test that theory is by giving them a visit.

Hours: Monday through Friday from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m.; Saturday and Sunday from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m., through October

It is followed by an 8-10 minute walk through the Cyrus' Family Crypt, which is also said to be haunted by spirits of the Cyrus family.
