If you could sail, swim, and celebrate on repeat each day for a week until you’re happily exhausted, you’d do it, wouldn’t you? Well, boating has just the event for that: Yacht Week. Haven’t heard of it? Here’s a Yacht Week Beginner’s Guide :

First, what is Yacht Week? 

If you’ve never heard of The Yacht Week , it’s called the original floating festival. You stay aboard a skippered boat with a bunch of your friends, cruising alongside other like-minded travelers. 

A skippered boat is a boat with someone who is in command of it, more or less equal to a captain! This gives your crew opportunities to focus on the fun and potentially learn boating from an experienced guide. 

Options exist for per- cabin bookings, too. Regardless, for seven days, you explore convoy-style, visiting picture-perfect destinations like Croatia, Turkey, Tahiti, and the British Virgin Islands. While you have the freedom to follow your own itinerary, you get your skipper’s first-hand knowledge of where to go and what to do. 

You can dine onboard or ashore , soak up the sun on secluded beaches, and of course, swim. Come at nighttime, and join your fellow adventurers at organized parties on the beach and in clubs. Or, simply star gaze on deck before drifting off to sleep.

Yacht Week’s brief history

The Yacht Week got its start nearly two decades ago. Directors and founders Eric Biorklund and William Wenckel worked for the same company as charter-boat captains in Europe when inspiration struck. A two-week period in Greece was so much fun that they became fast friends with their guests. Figuring they could replicate the success, they reserved 10 yachts for traveling together for a subsequent summer in anticipation of attracting 100 guests. It worked. They then added another five yachts to that total, which also filled up. Guests had so much fun, in fact, that they requested Biorklund and Wenckel arrange more trips. Soon the duo had more cruisers than staterooms available. So, they turned it into a dedicated business, and The Yacht Week was born.

With another business partner onboard, Biorklund and Wenckel set their sights on growing The Yacht Week internationally. That, too, worked. The company went from booking 30 boats in 2006 to more than 1,300 within a decade.

The Yacht Week is more than just skippered boats; the goal is to provide you with experiences you’ve never had before! For example, if you’re into techno, house music, and similar styles, the Croatia Ultra Route dates in July coincide with the Ultra Europe EDM festival. Pro Tip: Your yacht package includes VIP tickets. 

While music is a big part of The Yacht Week—and cruising in general—other itineraries are more about the destinations and camaraderie. 

From May through September, for instance, trips depart from Athens, Greece, and head to a number of islands. To ensure you get to know your fellow cruisers, a raft-up (anchoring your boat side by side) kicks off the first day. 

Each day for the rest of the week, you can explore ancient sites and towns with guides on foot or drive an ATV through the countryside. Fun costume parties, White Parties (where you wear all white), and more occur each day, too. 

To cap off the summer in style, book one of two available weeks (at presstime) in Turkey in September. You’ll enjoy the country’s famed Turquoise Coast, along its southwestern shore, starting out in Fethiye. When you go sightseeing, don’t miss the chance to partake in a Turkish bath. You’ll emerge with your skin feeling invigorated and an amazing story to share.

Pro Tip: Speaking of sharing, you’ll be sharing picture after picture on social media with your friends and family back home. The Yacht Week also has professional photographers and videographers on hand during each itinerary to ensure the best moments get captured. 

Get a feel for boating

Fortress Takes Control of Fort Lauderdale Yacht and RV Park in $86M Deal

Lender Fortress Investment Group took control of a yacht and RV park in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., as part of a $85.8 million deal, property records.

Called Yacht Haven Park & Marina , the property features 4,800 lineal feet of marina dockage and 255 motorcoach sites at 2295 West State Road 84 , just west of Interstate 95. From the park, boats can travel along local waterways to where the Stranahan River spills into the Atlantic Ocean near Fort Lauderdale’s Harbordale and Port Everglades neighborhoods. 

The previous owner — Fort Lauderdale Motorcoach Resort and Yacht Club , managed by Gary Cioffi — transferred ownership of the 20-acre property through a “deed in lieu of foreclosure” transaction, according to documents filed to Broward County.

The newly recorded deed amount is just $4.1 million more than the loan that Fortress Credit Corporation provided in 2021. The mortgage came in tandem with Fort Lauderdale Motorcoach Resort and Yacht Club’s $58.1 million purchase of the complex, which was completed in 1970.  

With the loan, Cioffi planned $26 million worth of renovations. These included redesigning the pool, updating the dockage, and adding a fitness center, dog park and on-site concierge services.

During the height of the pandemic, boating surged in popularity as an easy outdoor activity for social distancing with recreational boating growing by 35 percent to $170 million in annual economic activity between 2018 and 2023, according to the National Marine Manufacturers Association .

The reason for the foreclosure remains unclear. Representatives for Fort Lauderdale Motorcoach Resort and Yacht Club and Fortress Investment Group did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Here's where to get your Boat Week merch this week

Whether you’re participating in Saturday’s historic Port Huron-to-Mackinac Island Sailboat Race or visiting downtown to join in on the Boat Week fun, there are plenty of places to pick up a T-shirt or nautical souvenir to commemorate the occasion.

This year marks the second that MI Passion, 229 Huron Ave., has carried T-shirts with the Bayview logo for the Mackinac race — now with the emblem for its 100th anniversary.

But they’re going fast.

Boutique owner Anita Varty said she bought over 600 shirts, and by midday Thursday, had fewer than 200 left. Those include a women’s V-neck and a unisex shirt in white and gray colors. The race logo is shown enlarged on the back with a smaller version on the front chest of the shirts.

The shirts ranged in cost from $29.99 to $34.99. MI Passion was slated to be open until 8 p.m. Thursday, from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday.

Although they had plenty of other Michigan-made and nautical items, particularly themed for the lake and river, Varty said she was excited to be part of celebrating its 100th anniversary.

“The most exciting thing for me is seeing everybody out,” Varty said. “Like the energy downtown, I so looked forward to this week.”

Official Mackinac shirts can otherwise be purchased on Mackinac Island and through the Bayview Yacht Club in Detroit.

Port Huron Yacht club carrying 'Mac 2024' merch

The Port Huron Yacht Club’s women’s auxiliary is selling a variety of merchandise for both the club and specific items with a Mac 2024 logo, celebrating Port Huron’s spot as a start to the race but unaffiliated with the Bayview’s race merchandise.

Missy Smith, the auxiliary’s commodore, said the display of apparel would be out from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Thursday and Friday and Saturday morning with whatever items were left unsold. Typically, she said they only acquire enough to sell out, having first started selling items five weeks ago and on Wednesday for Boat Week.

“And it’s looking like this year we will probably sell out," she said. "… That’s what I’ve been telling everybody on their boats. ‘Oh, I like that shirt.’ If you want to get one, I would go now.”

As of midday Thursday, the merch included women’s V-neck T-shirts, regular unisex cotton T-shirts, and men’s long-sleeve sport tech shirts all in several colors, as well as hooded zip-up sweatshirts and tank tops. There were also yacht club sweatpants that didn’t have the Mac 2024 logo and sandals.

“And then, this year, we bought a new item, and it’s a T-shirt hoodie,” Smith said. “So, it’s T-shirt material, but it’s long-sleeved, and it has a hood. They’re really comfortable. And we have those in three colors.”

Prices for the local club’s merchandise, Smith said, ranged from $20 for tank tops to $60 for the zip-up sweatshirts with T-shirts falling in between.

Plenty of other stops with nautical-themed items to celebrate

Outside the official race shirt and local yacht club merch, a few other spots downtown had displays with boat-themed or items with anchors and other nautical symbols.

The Huron Lady II, for example, docked on the East Quay Street side of the Black River, had hats and T-shirts — the latter prompting you “take a ride” — on display for sale with small icons of the iconic cruise.

Elsewhere, the downtown shoe store District 43 also carried plenty of other items, such as through the Michigan Boat Company label.

“That’s our company,” said store owner Jorja Baldwin. “So, we have Michigan Boat Company. We have Motor City sun shirts, Michigan Boat Company tank tops, and an unofficial Michigan Boat Company Mackinac shirt.”

Baldwin said District 43 would be open from 2 to 6 p.m. Thursday and Friday and closed on Saturday.

When asked about their apparel, she said, “I like them all. It’s tank tops, T-shirts, sweatshirts because it’s Michigan. I feel like we have a little something for everyone. We have women’s tanks, and then, unisex things. The river mermaid because I like we can tie in the Black River and Lake Huron experiences.”

Japanese man arrested after sailing his yacht to Navy base on Okinawa

CAMP FOSTER, Okinawa — A Japanese yachtsman was taken into custody this week after landing at White Beach Naval Facility, according to the Navy and Japan’s coast guard.

U.S. military police “arrested a Japanese man who landed within the premises of White Beach on a yacht” and reported it to the coast guard at 1:25 p.m. Tuesday, a coast guard news release said. The man was handed over to the coast guard at 3:13 p.m., according to the release.

A spokeswoman for Fleet Activities Okinawa said the man sailed a “leisure vessel” into restricted waters near White Beach. The coast guard towed the vessel away, according to an email from spokeswoman Candice Barber.

“U.S. Security forces responded, and at no point was the security or protection of the base in question,” she wrote. “As a reminder to the public, access to a U.S. Navy installation is restricted to authorized personnel.”

The man identified himself as Minoru Tomono, 77, of Saitama prefecture, just north of Tokyo. He carried no identification and coast guard officials could not immediately confirm his identity, a coast guard spokesman said by phone Wednesday. Some government officials in Japan are required to speak to the media on condition of anonymity.

An investigation into the incident is ongoing, the spokesman said.

“We only know that he departed from Yonabaru Marina,” he said. Yonabaru is approximately 12 miles southwest of White Beach across the open water.

The man remains in custody at the Nakagusuku Coast Guard Office. Japan’s coast guard will either release him or forward his case to prosecutors within 48 hours of the arrest, the spokesman said.

If convicted of an offense, the man could face imprisonment for up to a year or a fine of up to 2,000 yen, or $12.67, according to the release.

White Beach Naval Facility, near the tip of Katsuren Peninsula, is used as a staging ground for U.S. Marines and their equipment on Okinawa, according to the Navy Region Japan website.

Clarence Thomas' Yacht Trip to Russia Raises Questions

A letter from two Senate Democrats alleging that U.S. Supreme Court Associate Justice Clarence Thomas failed to disclose a yacht trip to Russia has raised questions about the Court's longest-serving member.

Senators Sheldon Whitehouse and Ron Wyden sent the letter to Attorney General Merrick Garland on July 3 accusing Thomas of failing to disclose gifts from billionaire Republican donor Harlan Crow and asking Garland to appoint a special counsel to investigate the matter.

Whitehouse is chairman of the Judiciary Subcommittee on Federal Courts and Wyden serves as chairman of the Senate Finance Committee. The senators' list of "likely undisclosed gifts and income" from Crow and his affiliated companies to Thomas included a 2003 yacht trip to Russia and a private helicopter flight to a palace in St. Petersburg, the home town of Russian President Vladimir Putin .

The claims come as Democratic Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez announced on Wednesday that she had introduced articles of impeachment against Thomas and fellow conservative Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito .

In a move separate to the senators' letter, Ocasio-Cortez has accused Thomas and Alito of failing to disclose gifts and reimbursements and refusing to recuse themselves in cases in which they had conflicts of interest.

Thomas, the Court's most senior conservative, has been facing calls to resign for months—and efforts to impeach him—over his relationship with Crow and luxury trips he received from the billionaire GOP donor.

Newsweek has reached out to the Supreme Court via email for comment.

Commentators on social media site X, formerly Twitter , raised questions about Thomas' reported visit to Russia in posts on Wednesday.

"Clarence Thomas took secret unreported trips to Russia aboard a yacht and to one of Putin's palaces — in 2003," wrote lawyer and legal commentator Tristan Snell.

"That feels important somehow. Maybe — hear me out here — just maybe, we should launch a full and thorough investigation into Thomas and his Kremlin connection," Snell added.

Journalist and lawyer Seth Abramson wrote: "Clarence Thomas possibly meeting secretly with Kremlin officials in Russia and then committing felony Tax Fraud to cover it up is just another major breaking news story media has no time to cover because Biden cleared his throat a few extra times 12 days ago."

"America is screwed," Abramson added.

There was no suggestion in the senators' letter that Thomas met with any Russian officials during his visit to the country.

Olga Lautman, a senior fellow at the Center for European Policy Analysis (CEPA) highlighted a report from The Daily Beast on the senators' report.

"Hold on! WTH is a U.S. supreme court justice taking yacht trips and helicopter rides to Russia?" Lautman wrote on X .

"Before Kanye West went to Russia, Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas did it on Harlan Crow's dime and took a lovely helicopter ride to the palace in Putin's hometown," wrote Grant Stern, executive editor of political organization Occupy Democrats .

"YOU CAN'T MAKE THIS STUFF UP!" Stern said.

In their letter to Garland, Whitehouse and Wyden argued that the evidence against Thomas "warrants criminal investigation." They also accuse him of never paying taxes on a more than $267,000 loan forgiven by another wealthy business owner, Anthony Welters.

"Appointment of a Special Counsel would serve the public interest," the Democrats wrote. "The public must have confidence that the judiciary and the Department of Justice execute their responsibilities fairly, impartially, and without respect to political expedience or partisan interests."

This fall’s move-in week is from Saturday, Aug. 24, to Sunday, Sept. 1, allowing for flexibility around you and your student’s busy summer schedule.

The weeklong process helps to reduce community congestion so that your day may be low stress and laid back. Although you won't have university staff assistance during move-in, our process allows you and your student to have time for room set up and to get any last-minute items and explore their building, campus and Menomonie.

UW-Stout Packing List

Your student can settle into their space ahead of time and be focused to start the year.

• In early August, your student will be able to select a day and time during move-in week to set up their room. Directions on scheduling a move-in time will be emailed to their UW-Stout email address in late July. 
• Your student may stay during the week. However, most students will leave campus and return for fall orientation. Students should be sure to return to campus between 3 to 5 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 1, for the orientation experience. Meal plans are not active during move-in week, however, some food service will be available.

Meet at Parking Lot 29 on the date and time selected. Your student will have one unloading space in front of their building during their two-hour move-in time. Once unloaded or by the end of your move-in time, you will move your vehicle to an approved parking lot.

If your student will be moving to campus in the spring semester, remind them to check their UW-Stout email in December for more information.

Verification of Death:

In order to publish obituaries a name and phone number of funeral home/cremation society is required. We must contact the funeral home/cremation society handling the arrangements during their business hours to verify the death. If the body of the deceased has been donated to the University of Minnesota Anatomy Bequest Program, or a similar program, their phone number is required for verification.

Please allow enough time to contact them especially during their limited weekend hours.

A death certificate is also acceptable for this purpose but only one of these two options are necessary.

Guestbook and Outside Websites:

We are not allowed to reference other media sources with a guestbook or an obituary placed elsewhere when placing an obituary in print and online. We may place a website for a funeral home or a family email for contact instead; contact us with any questions regarding this matter.

Obituary Process:

Once your submission is completed, we will fax or email a proof for review prior to publication in the newspaper. This proof includes price and days the notice is scheduled to appear.

Please review the proof carefully. We must be notified of errors or changes before the notice appears in the Pioneer Press based on each day’s deadlines.

After publication, we will not be responsible for errors that may occur after final proofing.

All obituaries appear on TwinCities.com with a permanent online guestbook presence. If you wish to have the online presence removed, you can contact us to remove the guestbook online. Changes to an online obituary can be handled through the obituary desk. Call us with further questions.

Music and concerts, music and concerts | what to know if you’re headed to the minnesota yacht club festival, gwen stefani, alanis morissette and red hot chili peppers are headlining.

For the first time in a dozen years, St. Paul’s Harriet Island Regional Park will host a major rock and pop music festival, dubbed the Minnesota Yacht Club Festival, on Friday and Saturday.

Headlined by Gwen Stefani, Alanis Morissette and Red Hot Chili Peppers, the festival (which despite its name has nothing to do with yacht rock) is promoted by C3 Presents, an Austin, Texas, company that’s also behind Austin City Limits Music Festival, Voodoo Music + Arts Experience and the modern-day Lollapalooza. C3 was the largest independent promoter in the world until Live Nation bought a controlling stake in the company in 2014.

Organizers expect to attract more than 30,000 concertgoers each day.

While the Irish Fair of Minnesota calls Harriet Island home each August, music festivals have had a rough go on the site. The original Lollapalooza (back when it was a traveling festival) landed on the site in 1991, 1992 and 1994, but flooding forced the fest to move to the late St. Paul Civic Center in 1993.

Live Nation attempted to establish a new annual event, the River’s Edge Music Festival, in 2012. Despite big-name headliners Tool and the Dave Matthews Band, the festival didn’t attract enough paying customers to convince the concert promoting giant to return for a second year.

Here’s what folks headed to the Minnesota Yacht Club Festival need to know:

As of Wednesday afternoon, tickets were still available at a number of price points, starting at $135 for one day general admission (or $255 for two days) all the way up to platinum tickets for $925 ($1,395 for two days), which include a number of perks including free food and drinks, front-of-stage viewing and access to an air-conditioned lounge. Many of the general admission and general admission plus tickets are sold out, but there are verified resale tickets available, some at lower prices than face value.

Getting there

There are two entrances to the festival. The main entrance is at Harriet Island Boulevard and South Wabasha Street, while the west entrance is on West Water Street between Bidwell Street and Plato Boulevard.

There is no on-site parking at the festival, but its website lists numerous downtown St. Paul parking lots that are a 10- to 16-minute walk from the site. Several Metro Transit buses stop a half-mile from Harriet Island. The rideshare drop off is at 49 E. Fillmore Ave. The festival promises “ample bike parking” located near the two entrances.

What is allowed on site

Feel free to bring: Small clutch purses and fanny packs (6” x 9” or smaller) with no more than one pocket, all other bags must be clear and smaller than 12” x 6” x 12”, empty hydration packs and reusable water bottles, strollers, frisbees, binoculars, blankets, basic cameras (no detachable lenses or other accessories), sunscreen in non-aerosol containers (3.4 ounces or less), personal-sized hand sanitizer and factory sealed Naloxone/Narcan kits.

What isn’t allowed

Pretty much everything you would think, including outside food and beverage, coolers, aerosol containers, umbrellas, chairs, wagons, skateboards, drones, fireworks and illegal substances.

Concertgoers must wear securely fastened wristbands that are available at the box office. Wristbands can be activated online to add an emergency contact and to use for cashless transactions (with a pin number). Wristbands that are damaged, lost or stolen can be replaced by the original purchaser one time only for $20. Patrons can leave and reenter at will up until 7 p.m. each day.

There is a guest services tent that has earplugs and a lost and found. Free hydration stations are located throughout the site. Lockers are available to rent for $25 each day or $48.50 for both.

Who is playing

Doors open at 12:30 p.m. There are two stages, with staggered performances that do not overlap.

Friday’s schedule includes: Gully Boys (1-2 p.m.), Harbor and Home (2-2:40 p.m.), Morgan Wade (2:40-3:40), Michigander (3:40-4:40), Joan Jett and the Blackhearts (4:40-5:40), Durry (5:40-6:40), Gwen Stefani (6:45-8), The Head and the Heart (8-9) and Alanis Morissette (9-10:30).

Five Things to Know About the 2024 Dana Open

One of the longest-running events on the LPGA Tour’s schedule returns again this season as the Dana Open at Highland Meadows Golf Club gets underway on Thursday. The world’s top-ranked players are making the trip from the fourth major of the season – The Amundi Evian Championship in France – and fans will also get a chance to see some of their favorite players who will be making a return to competition this week in Ohio. Here are five things you need to know about this week’s Dana Open.

Lexi Thompson Day

Friday has been designated as Lexi Thompson Day at the Dana Open. In celebration of Thompson, who has announced she will be stepping away from full-time competition at the end of the 2024 season, the Dana Open will recognize the 29-year-old with a flyover by two F-16s from the Ohio Air National Guard. The flyover will occur at 1:02 p.m. local time on Friday which is also Thompson’s second-round tee time. Adding to the festivities, a limited number of pink hats emblazoned with the name “Lexi” will be given to fans on-site as will buttons with her photo and the words “Thank you, Lexi.” Thompson has fond memories of her trips to Toledo, Ohio, where in 2013, at just 18 years of age, she made a hole-in-one to win a car during the final round. “It was the best feeling,” Thompson said afterward as she high-fived fans lining the par-3 14th hole at Highland Meadows Golf Club. Thompson is riding high ahead of her return at the Dana Open, where she is competing for the first time since 2022, as she is coming off three consecutive top-10 finishes. She’ll be seeking to become the first American to win the Dana Open since Danielle Kang in 2020 and just the second to do so since 2009.

Grant Defends

Linn Grant was already a proven winner on the Ladies European Tour when she began to play full-time on the LPGA, so much was expected from the rising Swedish star. In 2023, Grant quickly delivered on those expectations when she fired a third-round 62 at Highland Meadows Golf Club and went on to win by three strokes over Allisen Corpuz to become a Rolex First-Time Winner on the LPGA Tour. Grant is already a winner again this season on the LET at the Scandinavian Mixed but is searching for a spark to ignite some LPGA Tour as she has earned just two top 10s so far this season. Grant will head to her title defense off a T26 showing at The Amundi Evian Championship.

Several of the world’s top-ranked players will be battling jet lag as they make the trip from France to Ohio for the Dana Open. And while she might be a touch sleep-deprived, Stephanie Kyriacou will no doubt be feeding off the momentum generated by recording her career-best finish at The Amundi Evian Championship. Kyriacou, after being a factor for much of the week, ultimately came away as the runner-up. She also has fond memories to lean on at Highland Meadows where she finished tied for fourth last year.

Also riding the momentum of a solid week in France is the reigning Louise Suggs Rolex Rookie of the Year, Haeran Ryu, who came fifth at The Amundi Evian Championship. The solid showing marks her third top-10 finish in a major championship this season and is one of six top 10s this year. Ryu finished T19 last year in her debut at the Dana Open. Xiyu Lin will be continuing her pursuit of her first LPGA Tour victory at the Dana Open, where she was tied for fourth in 2023 and tied for seventh in 2022. Gaby Lopez, winner of the 2022 Dana Open after defeating Megan Khang by a single stroke, also makes her return to Sylvania, Ohio.

Blast From the Past

Fans will enjoy seeing some familiar faces this week at the Dana Open with the return of Karrie Webb, Sandra Gal and Natalie Gulbis.

Karrie Webb, a member of the World Golf Hall of Fame and a 41-time winner on the LPGA Tour, is making a rare appearance in what is just her second start of the 2024 season. In 1999, at Highland Meadows, Webb was a part of a six-person playoff, the largest in LPGA history, which was ultimately won by Se Ri Pak. Webb made her only other appearance this season at the ShopRite LPGA Classic presented by Acer where she missed the cut.

Germany’s Sandra Gal, a longtime fan-favorite, is making just her fifth start of the season as she has played a limited schedule this year. She returned to the LPGA Tour this season for the first time since 2022 after dealing with Lyme disease and undergoing hip surgery. Natalie Gulbis will also make her season debut at the Dana Open.

History at Highland Meadows

Established in 1984 as the Jamie Farr Toledo Classic, this week’s LPGA Tour stop is one of the longest-running events on the LPGA Tour’s schedule. The tournament in Sylvania, Ohio at Highland Meadows Country Club, has been won by an illustrious list of players which includes Se Ri Pak, who won this event five times in 1998, 1999, 2001, 2003 and 2007. Other major champions who have hoisted the trophy in Ohio include Annika Sorenstam (2000), Meg Mallon (2004), Paula Creamer (2008), Lydia Ko (2014, 2016), In-Kyung Kim (2017), Sei Young Kim (2019) and Danielle Kang (2020). Creamer set the course record en route to her victory in 2008 when she opened with a round of 60.
